trailler:

Beijos!

Phantom of the Paradise is a 1974 musical film written and directed by Brian De Palma. The story is a loosely adapted mixture of The Phantom of the Opera, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Faust and also briefly references Frankenstein and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. Initially, it had box office failure and was panned by some critics, but it was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe and has since acquired a cult following.

Tagline: The music made him do it!

Trivia:

The character Philbin, who is the chief henchman of the villain Swan, borrows his last name from Mary Philbin, star of The Phantom of the Opera (1925).

The “Death Records” secretary’s card index includes files on Alice Cooper, David Geffen, Bette Midler, Peter Fonda, Dick Clark and Kris Kristofferson.

On Phoenix’s mirror after the concert in which she becomes a star is a magazine ad with the headline “I’m a Harper’s Freak”. Phoenix was played by ‘Jessica Harper (I)’.

At the airport when Beef is introduced, the “Death Records” logo on the lectern was superimposed over the original logo for “Swan Song” records to avoid conflict with Led Zeppelin’s record label, which had sued. Although the film’s producers were certain they would win due to the fact that the phrase was common long before, they decided to make the change in order to get the film finished quickly rather than go through a prolonged court fight.

The Death Records logo is optically printed over the originally planned “Swan Song” label at several points in the film

Cameo: [Rod Serling] introductory voiceover.

Phantom was a box office flop the year it came out. The only place in North America where the film had lasting power was in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where it stayed on the screens for months.

Sissy Spacek is credited as “set dresser” for this film. As she was already an established actor when this film was made, one can assume that she took the job to assist her boyfriend, Jack Fisk, who was the film’s production designer.

William Finley came up with the bird motif of the Phantom costume, a collaboration with costume designer Rosanna Norton.

According to William Finley, the record press in which his Winslow character was disfigured was a real pressing plant (it was an injection-molding press at an Ideal Toy Co. plant). He was worried about whether the machine would be safe, and the crew assured that it was. The press was fitted with foam pads (which resemble the casting molds in the press), and there were chocks put in the center to stop it from closing completely. Unfortunately, the machine was powerful enough to crush the chocks that it gradually kept closing. It was Finley’s speed and timing that saved him from truly being hurt, as he got his head out just in time. Incidentally, his scream in the scene was real.

Gerrit Graham has talked about the infamous “musical chairs” casting, where William Finley almost wound up with no part to play. The studio considered casting Paul Williams as Winslow, Graham as Swan and Peter Boyle as Beef. Williams turned down the role of Winslow not only because he didn’t feel physically fit or menacing for the role, but he didn’t want to use the role of Winslow as a message against the recording industry. Somehow, Boyle was unavailable, Graham took the Beef role, and Finley ultimately took the Winslow role. In fact, director Brian De Palma actually wrote the part with his colleague Finley in mind. William Finley said in a recent interview that Jon Voight was at one time considered for the role of Swan.

The character of Winslow Leach (the Phantom) was named after director Brian De Palma’s mentor, Wilford Leach.

The single-edit, “time bomb in the car trunk” sequence is an homage to Orson Welles’ famous opening for Touch of Evil (1958).

Gerrit Graham’s singing voice was dubbed by Ray Kennedy.

When Swan (Paul Williams) is adjusting Winslow’s voice, the singer is not William Finley but Paul Williams. This makes it a little in-joke when Swan announces that the voice is “perfect”.

The “electronic room” in which Winslow composes his cantata (and where Swan restores his voice) is in fact the real-life recording studio, The Record Plant. Also, the walls covered with knobs are in reality a huge, custom-built Moog electronic synthesizer. Dubbed TONTO, this instrument was featured on several albums by the pioneering electronica duo T.O.N.T.O.’s Expanding Head Band, and it still exists to this day.

During Beef’s introductory scene at the airport, on of the gathered reporters is named “Mr Pizer”. This is probably a reference to the film’s director of photography, Larry Pizer.

In addition to Leroux’s “Phantom of the Opera” and Goethe’s (et al) “Faust”, the film also references Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”, Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, and Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” for a total of at least five citations of classical horror stories.

Gerrit Graham was so sick the day that the “Life at Last” scene was filmed that he could hardly walk.

Director Brian De Palma originally considered the popular group Sha-Na-Na for the roles of the Juicy Fruits, but the group was not only very big at the time, but he found them too difficult to work with.

Jessica Harper beat out Linda Ronstadt for the part of Phoenix.

Much of the movie deals with birds: The names Phoenix and Swan, the Phantom’s bird-like costume, Phoenix’s dress after her first appearance, her feather jacket, Swan’s bird vest, Beef’s bird tail during his number. Even the logo for Death Records is a bird.

According to Danny Peary in the book Cult Movies 2, originally this film would have had the title “The Phantom” but King Features Syndicate, producers of the Phantom comic strip, demanded that this film have a longer title.

This film homages the 1943 remake of the Phantom of the Opera, not the original novel; the 1943 film had the Phantom as a man disfigured by acid (similar to the 1939 origin of the Tonny Quinn, the Black Bat and the 1942 origin of Two-Face). In Leroux’s novel, the Phantom lived with his deformity from birth.

Another Brick in The Wall).

PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE (1974)
Though it’s a Brian DePalma film, Phantom of the Paradise really owes everything to Paul Williams who wrote all of the uniquely catchy music. Williams plays “Swan,” the slick, smooth and very short record producer who steals a rock cantata based on Faust from Winslow (William Finley). He wants Winslow’s music to open his new music venue, The Paradise, but has no use for the songwriter so Swan has him framed and sent to prison (Sing Sing – natch.) where his teeth are extracted (?!). He breaks out, is maimed by a record press, becomes the titular antihero and seeks revenge on Swan by attempting to sabotage the opening of The Paradise. But unrequited love finds him in the form of Jessica Harper (Susperia), as a beautiful(?) young singer named Phoenix. Winslow inks a deal –in blood–with Swan (who’s already made his own deal with the devil), to finish his Faust rock opera with Phoenix as its intended star. When Swan breaks his promise and casts a screeching glam rocker named Beef (Garrit Graham – who is hilarious) in the lead role, Winslow goes off the deep end and does what he must to ensure Pheonix’s starring role, but only after she’s already served up her soul to Swan who plans to sculpt her into his next big thing. Williams’ songwriting style perfectly serves the story and without it, PotP might have been just another early-70s misfire for DePalma. In fact, PotP was considered a huge failure upon release, but time has been kind to it and a well-deserved cult following finally sprung up and still holds strong today organizing cast reunions and fan conventions from time to time. Though it precedes The Rocky Horror Picture Show by a year, Rocky owes much to Phantom, which is equally memorable and more artfully made. It’s only dumb luck (and probably its overt sexuality) that made RHPS the runaway cult king it is, while Phantom rests comfortably in comparative obscurity, with an infinitely smaller fan base. (Though probably a coincidence, there are some scenes in Rocky Horror that seem to replicate moments from Phantom and I’m surprised I can find no reference online to the fact that both films feature a 50s doo-wop-style requiem for a dead rocker named “Eddie!”). Williams would go on to write music for The Muppet Movie, the kiddie gangster cult musical, Bugsy Malone, not to mention many of the Carpenters most beloved singles — but PotP is undoubtedly his best showcase and it changed the way I perceive the diminutive actor/singer/composer. (For most of my childhood I knew him best as Little Enos from the Smokey and the Bandit movies.) Harper has a singing voice that’s plenty distinctive and she’s up to the musical challenge but she’s just not a compelling enough leading lady. She suffered similarly in the RHPS psuedo-sequel, Shock Treatment in which she inherits the role of Janet from Susan Sarandon. Though they all have their faults PotP, RHPS and ST would make a pretty killer musical triple-bill. And as much as I love Rocky, PotP is easily the most ambitious and successful at telling a story. One can only imagine what kind of cult phenom Phantom might have been if Tim Curry had had the opportunity to belt out a few of Williams’ numbers.) Despite his spotty resume DePalma’s film fetishism works well here and references to movies like The Manchurian Candidate, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Psycho are easy to spot. The split-screen gimmick he’d use to great effect in Carrie the following year gets a trial spin here and Sissy Spacek, who had just auditioned and won the role of Carrie while PotP was in production was on set with DePalma so much that she ends up with a set-dressing credit. The very Twilight Zone-esque opening narration is read by none other than Rod Serling himself! A remake (*sigh*) is currently in development.

At night at the bar does not always provide teachings, but last night, I learned two things:

Sometimes, to get the girl, a guy’s gotta wear a zip-up fleece and corduroy khakis. I’m not a zip-up fleece and corduroy khaki kinda guy, so I would never get the pointy shoe and $100 blue jeans girl – not that I would want to. Introduce me to the girl in Target jeans and Keds anytime.

Is this not possibly one of the greatest movies of all time?! I just ordered it on DVD, so I’ll be sure to let you know. Brian DePalma made this in 1974, a year before Sisters and two before Carrie. It played on a background TV out of earshot, behind the couple from Hell Hell Bean. I’m still not sure which display was more frightening.

After a spell of unemployment (and a surplus of “down-time”) it’s supremely satisfying to work for 8 hours. I didn’t even want a lunch break! Whoa! Also, this is the first non-coffee shop job I’ve ever had where there’s a steady supply of FREE COFFEE. Like, a big pot that’s Always Full. Or at least half-full–it’s very optimistic!

MINDBLIGOOWWWWWWWWWWWWwwwwwwww

A perk sure to retain it’s wonderfulness far beyond that of The Eight Hour Day.

Also on the to-do list for the week:

Une tranche de Geek V - Phantom of the Geek - Imitation à la bouche de la Toccata en D mineur de Bac

Une tranche de Geek V
- Phantom of the Geek -

The road was long but I ran it, Janet
There’s a fire in my heart but you fan it, Janet
If there’s one fool for you then I am it, Janet
Now I’ve one thing to say and that’s…
Damnit, Janet, I love you…

I swore I’d sell my soul
For one love who would stand by me
And give me back the gift of laughter
One love who would stand by me
And after making love we’d…
…
Dream a bit of style
We’d dream a bunch of friends
Dream each others smile
And dream it never ends

Bref. Tu as compris. Solution n°3 : change de tee-shirt.

So messed up I want you here
In my room I want you here
Now were gonna be face-to-face
And Ill lay right down in my favorite place
And now I wanna be your dog
Now I wanna be your dog
Now I wanna be your dog
C’mon

When four teenage outcasts become experts in the ancient arts of witchcraft they seek revenge on those who slighted them in the past. Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 08/22/2006 Starring: Robin Tunney Neve Campbell Run time: 101 minutes Rating: R Director: Andrew Fleming

If Buffy the Vampire Slayer represents the lighter side of high school as a macabre experience, here’s a movie that asks the burning question, “What happens when angst-ridden teenagers develop supernatural powers?” More to the point, how do four outcast teenaged witches handle their ability to cast wicked spells on the taunting classmates who’ve nicknamed them “The Bitches of Eastwick”? The answer, of course, is “don’t get mad, get even.” That’s about all there is to this terminally silly movie, which makes up for its ludicrous plot by letting its young female cast have a field day as they indulge their dark fantasies. Fairuza Balk is enjoyable as the most wicked of the witches, and is therefore the focus of the film’s most dazzling special effects. But it’s Neve Campbell from television’s Party of Five who made this film a modest box-office hit, just before she became her generation’s fright-movie favorite in Scream and its popular sequel. –Jeff Shannon

I’ve been really sick for the past several days, and, as a result, I’ve been cooped up and swimming in an ocean of kleenex. Instead of watching hours of awful television, I rustled through the old movies in my Netflix and here at the house.

Since I feel pretty useless, I decided to at least review what I’ve seen:

Catch 22

I’d read some of the Joseph Heller novel, but it lost me… just like the movie did. I wasn’t able to follow it. It could be the cold medicine or it could be just me not being good at following movies, but the whole thing seemed like a non-linear jumble. I’m sure that’s what war is like. Still, interesting to watch.

Spaceballs

Everyone is always so surprised when I say I haven’t seen Spaceballs, and now I have. They don’t have to be surprised anymore. For all the build-up, I thought it sucked. In fact, that’s like every Mel Brooks movie I’ve ever seen. Young Frankenstein and the rest. Really, it seems like a lot of people think it’s funny, but I think it’s dumb.

Phantom of the Paradise

Kind of a combination of Faust and Phantom of the Opera, Phantom of the Paradise was really impressive and cool. It came out before glam rock and Rocky Horror, so it was a terrible bomb at the box office, but I think it’s definitely better than the rest of the movies I watched in my sick stint.

Alice’s Restaurant

I’m in the middle of this one right now. It’s got Arlo Guthrie and the rest of his hippie pals goofing around. It’s really just a bunch of unfocused silliness, and it’s not bad for that. It’s got some of the happiness and some of the troubles with the long hair hippie movement, and I bet it’s going to end with everyone kind of falling apart.

They spend a lot of time on where to dump a bunch of garbage on the side of the road, which seems pretty unenvironmental. Maybe they didn’t think about that environmental stuff until much later.

Do you know any words that when you hear them, they cause you to roll your eyeballs?

One of mine is: organic …. as in “organic food“.

I know what people mean when they say it, but how can one word have 2 definitions that contradict each other?

1. derived from a living organism.

2. food grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizer.

It doesn’t make sense to me.

Either almost everything I eat is organic, or almost nothing I eat is organic.

It can’t be both, but it is!

Either I am organic, or I am not organic.

It’s an oxymoron.

It’s like saying: sport

1. an active pastime, recreation, or game having a set form and rules.

2. an active pastime, recreation, or game having no set form or rules.

This word with 2 opposing definitions bothers me.

note: black pudding, blood sausage, liver, and kidney are probably the original organic foods.

double note: I wonder which definition organic chemists like?

triple note: Are organs at hockey arenas and churches “vital organs“?

quadruple note: Is organ music: 1) made with an organ? 2) made by an organism? 3) made by people not on drugs?

quintuple note: wasn’t phantom of the paradise a strange movie?
