As most of you might know, it is a form of government where all of its eligible citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. This way of government can be traced back to its ancient roots in 5th century Greece where many of the Greek city-states, notably Athens, granted such a political privilege only to their elites and excluded the lower classes such as the peasants and most certainly the slaves. It was not until the Glorious Revolution in 1688 in England that the Parliament gained sufficient power such that the monarch became a mere figurehead. Yet, it would take mankind another 200 years later before the United States Constitution was created, cementing what future democratic government would model after.

Before I go on further and ranting about the philosophical objectivity of Democracy, you must be wondering why my sudden epiphany and interest. Well, as it turns out, a country, which I shall not name and is not where I am a citizen of (thank God!), has recently just went through its General Election and in the process made a mockery of the democratic resolution it claims to uphold. If you still have no idea what I am referring to, let me just share with you some of the remarkable stories/reports that have been buzzing since last night. And if the movie Recount is flashing in your head, that does not even come close to what I am going to share with you.

As expected in every election there are two major parties. The ruling party and the major opposition. Early polls have all shown telling statistics that the opposition is in good standing to take over the Parliament and that was exactly how the story began to unfold as the opposition was leading in the polls. Then came reports of phantom voters from a foreign state given temporary citizenship, ‘indelible’ ink (supposedly used to mark a person who has voted) that allow re-votes, and my favorite - ballot boxes that magically appeared after a blackout during the poll count. And yes, with probably the biggest swing votes in the history of politics, the ruling party won. Almost instantly, its citizens began to switch their Facebook profile pictures to a dark screen in commemoration that they are all in the darkest days of their lives.

Now you might finally understand why my friends and I spent the evening at the cafe debating over the idea of democracy and the travesty that had happened in that mentioned country. With that in mind, back I dwell into the ideology of democracy.

So, what exactly does democracy really mean? When we say that every person has an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives, are we in really saying that we are all free men with the right to do anything we so freely choose?  What happens then when the actions of one contravenes with the rights of others to decide for their own lives? Is there really such thing as true freedom? Or is Freedom instead really Constraint disguised in another form?

Thomas Hobbes, an English Philosopher, mentioned in his book, Leviathan, that if people were really left freely to do whatever they please, the world will descend into total chaos – War of All Against All or Bellum Omnium Contra Omnes. And so the only way in which we can avoid such a disaster is for people to come together via a social contract and establish a civil society. There is ofcourse a larger debate over what should constitute the social contract but that is a debate for another time.

Now I shall aim to show how the acts of that government might have just kickstarted its country from a civil state to a state of total anarchy.

For convenience sake, let us assume that since the country had a Parliament, the citizens of that country have in existence some form of a social contract. One in which has kept the country in a civil state. Let us take a further bold step in assuming that part of this contract is for the people to pass on their rights of making decisions that affect their lives onto a group of people called the elected government. So, with these two assumptions, we should be able to safely deduce that the citizens although not having the full right to make decisions for their own lives, still retain their right to decide who they want to confer their rights to. And it is this exact right, the right of the people to choose their own elected government which is the binding agent of the entire social contract. Without such a right, the entire social contract will be baseless and the society will only transcend into total anarchy.

But perhaps, I might be wrong. Perhaps the ruling party is indeed in some other form of a social contract. Maybe one in which the people have differing rights? Differing rights of representation, justice and prosperity? Then again, if there are differing rights, can we still call it a democracy…?

It’s so ludicrous I don’t know where to start. Phantom voters, Bangladeshi “citizens”, indelible ink that’s not quite indelible, $5000 Ringgit for voters who abstain from voting, procreating ballot boxes, 19^th century voters, duplicate votes, media censorship, and the mystical reality-altering blackouts.

Yes, welcome to the Malaysian General Election of 2013, an event of monumental significance for a number of reasons:

1)  A record 80% of Malaysians turned up to vote – the highest number of voters in Malaysian history.

2)  Barisan Nasional (BN) won the Malaysian elections despite obtaining only 49% of Malaysian votes (versus opposition alliance Pakatan Rakyat’s 50%)

3)  Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has been revealed to be a wizard.

By wizard, I don’t mean “genius” or “maestro”, I mean it quite literally – a practitioner of arcane magick hitherto unrevealed to the muggle population of Malaysia. For those with doubts, let me ask you: how else is it possible to incite power outrages and conjure extra ballot boxes at will? To revive voters from the dead and summon Phantoms to do one’s bidding? Forget Houdini and Copperfield; wizardry of this level puts even Gandalf to shame. Already amongst the wizarding fraternity, Najib has been bestowed the epithet of “Razak the Black” – a title that has been well earned indeed.

Like all great wizards, Razak the Black has participated in the slaying of numerous evils, wielding his staff of power against insurgency in Sabah. Eyewitness accounts point to a mysterious hooded figure who extinguished legions of Filipino militants with waves of inky darkness, causing the remainder of the 235-strong battalion to flee in abject terror. Legends speak of a similarly-described character who called forth a rain of money from the sky that lifted thousands of Malaysian citizens out of poverty, just in time for them to cast their decisive votes in the country’s elections.

Despite his glorious exploits, however, there is one accomplishment that places Najib in the highest echelons of wizarding greatness: the slaying of a foe so sinister and monstrous that it was considered the greatest threat to modern civilisation.

Democracy.

Wielding his staff of blackened oak, Razak the Black – aided by the Phantom Army of Blangadezh, has finally struck the finishing blow upon Democracy, the malevolent beast of tyranny. With this, the Wizard of Darkness has successfully defended his throne and liberated the people of Malaysia against the threats of Chaos, Calamity, Corruption and Cronyism – the Four Horsemen of Democracy.

Well, now that the crusade is over, hopefully the Wizard of Darkness will see fit to employ his magical prowess in endeavours now worthy of his attention. Perhaps he could start with some weather control – Malaysia could do with a bit of snow to take away the heat emanating from the fresh corpse of Democracy.

KUALA LUMPUR: Enam warga Myanmar dan sebuah van yang dipenuhi enam warga Bangladesh di’ajak minum teh’ oleh orang ramai setelah cuba memasuki tempat mengundi.

Mereka dibawa keluar dari kawasan itu untuk diajak minum teh dan tidak dibenarkan oleh orang ramai pergi ke pusat pengundi.

12 mereka itu didapati cuba memasuki pusat pengundian di Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Pantai, Pantai Dalam dalam Parlimen Lembah Pantai.

Di Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Suria, Bangsar pula Harakahdaily diberitahu, beberapa buah kenderaan bercermin gelap memasuki kawasan pengundian itu melalui pintu belakang.

Tidak diketahui apa tujuan tetapi kejadian yang berlaku ketika pengundian sedang berjalan menimbulkan kekecohan di sekolah itu.

Naib Presiden  PKR, Nurul Izzah Anwar mempertahankan kerusi itu dengan dicabar oleh Datuk Seri Raja Nong Chik dari BN. Turut serta mencuba nasib adalah calon Bebas, Rusli Baba.

Foreign looking voters cause a stir

Voters in Kuiala Langat pulled out four men from the voting line thinking they were foreigners

PETALING JAYA: Four voters who looked like foreigners were pulled out of the line by others who were in the voting queue  in Kuala Langat.

The four men who were pulled out claimed that they were born in Malaysia but their parents were from India.

They were  reported to the Election Commission officials, who then started to investigate the matter.

Sources say that the EC officials then allowed two of them to get back in line after their documents were inspected.

Sources also confirmed that the two allowed to vote were seen with birth certificates which looked rather new as opposed to how the document will look like after many years.

The other two are still being investigated.

A dubious voter in Pandan, Selangor was turned away from the polling station after PKR polling agents objected, said PKR Pandan candidate Rafizi Ramli (below).

He said one Pandan voter Seok Leong Yew alerted his team of the dubious voter whose registered address was allegedly the same as his.

“We have circulated all of the suspicious IC numbers to our polling agents, so as soon as the polling clerk read out his IC number, our polling agent objected.

“Since our guys objected (to the dubious voter), he left without voting. We didn’t manage to stop him,” said Rafizi at a press conference outside the Ampang Police District Headquarters before going inside to lodge a police report over the matter.

The incident was reported taking place at the polling centre at a Taman Dagang religious school.

Accompanying him to lodge the report is Seok and another Pandan voter Sivaprakasam Kuruppiah, who also found out today that there are unknown voters registered at his residential address.

Several voters in Kulai and Klang have claimed that they cannot vote as someone has voted in their name.

They will be lodging complaints with the Election Commission (EC).

In Kulai, Chua Siew Pin, 42, arrived at the polling station at SJK(C) Batu about 10am and found that her name had already been used.

“I am waiting for the agents of political parties to help me. I will fight for my rights,” she said when contacted.

She claimed that the EC officer then filled a Form10 to ascertain her identity, but that she had insisted on Form 11 – - a declaration form to allow voting in the event of a dispute – being used instead.

“I am still awaiting the outcome,” she said.

Kulai DAP candidate Teo Nie Ching said she has received five to six similar complaints and that the voters are waiting for her at her service centre,

Teo, the Serdang incumbent MP, said Liew Ah Moy went to SMK Kulai Besar at 10.30am, but that EC officers told her that she ‘had already voted’.

“When I check Liew’s fingers, there is no indelible ink mark,” Teo tweeted.

In Klang, PKR’s Dr Xavier Jeyakumar tweeted that two voters have protested because someone had voted in their names.

“Use Form 11 and allow the genuine voter to vote,” he tweeted.

URGING EQUAL REPRESENTATION: PHAK president Minah Jelir

KUALA LUMPUR — Phantoms, ghosts, demons and other Malaysian supernatural beings across the country today urged the government and the Election Commission to make voting easier for them this coming 13th General Elections.

Speaking at their headquarters during an awkwardly-timed Press conference past midnight, Minah Jelir, President of Persatuan Hantu Kebangsaan (PHAK), said that in light of the huge number of registered ‘pengundi hantu’, the authorities should be more sensitive to their unique needs.

“For the longest time, we feel neglected and marginalised despite the fact that we make up a good percentage of the 13 million registered voters in the country,” said Minah, an 83-year old pontianak (female vampire) dressed in a fashionably long torn white robe, with the odd blood and dirt stain or two. “But every single election season, my people find that the voting conditions are simply deplorable.”

Minah pointed how the voting period of 8am to 5pm does not consider the nocturnal nature of ghouls and demons.

“For goodness sake, which phantom in their right mind stays up in the middle of the day?” asked Minah angrily. “Our skin burns when exposed to sunlight. No amount of SPF100 sunblock can protect us while queueing for our turn to cast our votes!” she growled, before relating the unfortunate incident in 2008 in which 3 hantu rayas (a type of demon that acts as a double for a black magic practitioner) burst into flames in the hot sun in Kodiang, Kedah. “It’s no secret that the undead are only active at night, so please extend the voting hours for us. Stop being so living-centric!”

Eyes glowing with fury, Minah also raised the issue of having to bring along an identification card in order to be allowed into a voting centre.

“Look, some of us ghosts pre-date Identification Cards and Malaysian passports, okay? Hantu Galah (pole ghost) out there is over 6,000 years old,” said Minah, gesturing to a tall, thin demon hiding behind a huge tree in the HQ compound. “And like many ghosts, he’s the introvert type too scared and shy to go to the National Registration Department to get his IC made. Minah however said the association agreed that the Malaysian general election is only for Malaysian citizens. “We at PHAK fully support the condition that only Malaysians — humans or ghouls — get to vote here, this is our country and we should have the exclusive right to pick who leads us. so Count Dracula and his expat ‘mat salleh’ minions don’t qualify, just like my Kuntilanak cousins from Indonesia. But please, find another way to identify us. Surely you have the technology to do that?”

“And what’s with the indelible ink?” asked the bloodsucker from Kuala Selangor, whose victim tally is reportedly in the hundreds. “Sure, it works on human fingers, but what about those with less-than-alive skin and brimstone-hardened talons? The silver nitrate content of the ink does not go well with our dead cells!” she said, taking a swipe at the table she was seated at, leaving a set of horrifying deep gashes on the teak wood that made several Press members faint in fear. “Frankly I don’t see the point of painting some red ink on our fingers when our entire hands are covered in blood.

JUSTICE FOR EVERY’BODY’: The Penanggalan vampire

“Plus, you know what’s the toughest part about this indelible ink business? It totally disregards the phantom voters who can’t get their hands extended to be painted, such as the Pocong (ghost in death shroud). And where is the Penanggalan (floating vampire head) supposed to be painted with the ink? Her entrails?” said Minah, pointing towards the ghastly ghoul at the back of the room while telling her to stop feeding from the neck of a petrified Harian Metro journalist.

“The Election Commission also must address the age requirements for voters,” she added. “While the rules for the living may be clear, the EC should think about how the 21-and-above rule applies to my old-but-forever-young colleague, Toyol (child spirit used by black magic practitioners to steal). He may look like a typical 2-year old, but ladies and gentlemen, he’s been 2 for the last 150 years.”

The pontianak continued, “We want the government to introduce some comprehensive changes to enable ghosts and phantom voters to perform our civic duty in peace. We understand that you humans may not want to cast your votes amongst us — our horrid appearance may strike mortal fear in many of you, but believe me, some of us do not wish to be seen amongst the living too.

“So we urge EC to provide a separate venue and time for us soulless beings. A place where we can vote without causing mass hysteria or being jeered, or worse still — victimised by ghost hunters. A place where less-than-modest ghosts like Hantu Kopek (demon that suffocates her victims with her killer breasts) can do her deed without shame,” said Minah, her fangs glistening in the moonlight peering through the window.

Asked what would be the association’s hopes for the future of Malaysia, Miss Jelir said that she envisions a time where phantoms and humans can co-exist in peace and harmony.

“Yes, we may have many issues to iron out,” she said, eyes tearing from her emotions and raw exposed nerves. “Our kind may find difficulty finding alternative food sources — you living do taste good. But if we could just put all these petty issues behind us and focus on our future and the rakyat’s wellbeing, we can all be happy together.

“I’d like to see one of my kind in Parliament one day. Imagine that, a Yang Berpuaka debating on education or defence issues with a Yang Berhormat. That would be just inspiring!” said Minah, before letting out a banshee-like laughter and flying off into the cloudless night.

There is without a doubt that campaigning up to the very last day before voting will be crucial for both the UMNO-led Barisan Nasional with the People’s Alliance or Pakatan Rakyat.

Various accusation and counter accusations have been thrown at each other…..with signs of violence being reported here and there, but hopefully capped by the security apparatus!

It was so obvious that the campaign run by Barisan Nasional has centred around the ‘aura’ of ‘popularity’ of its Prime Minister, Najib Tun Abdul Razak.

Hardly has Barisan Nasional had any significant political rallies around the country……bar those attended by Najib.

More shocking has been its paid on-line advertisements – they are shown prior to the video clips of massive Pakatan Rakyat rallies loaded on YouTube!!

Such desperation…….and a clear sign of the irrelevance and waning influence of the UMNO-led government.

I am now convinced that if the elections was carried out without any mischief, Pakatan Rakyat would win hands-down.

But when desperados cling to power, then abuse will arise…….look no further than Mahathir’s comrade-in-arms, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.

Like Mugabe, there is too much at stake for Mahathir (and the UMNO warlords) for Pakatan Rakyat (esp if the Prime Minister is Anwar Ibrahim) to take over the government at Putrajaya.

The latest serious allegations is the ferrying in by air, of foreigners into Kuala Lumpur and Selangor…..apparently to vote this Sunday.

It is therefore imperative that every voter should come out to vote……in order to prevent fraudsters from taking advantage of the low turnout to ‘parachute’ in the frauds to vote in place of the absent voters!!

Much has been said leading up to the elections this Sunday……… BUT the bottom line is that this UMNO-led government has perpetuated a corrupt administration that has gone from bad to worse.

Worse to the extent that the country will be on the brink of Bankruptcy if this is not checked.

It cannot be checked under a new UMNO-led government due to entrenched interests!

The only way is via CHANGE!

UBAH!

One thing I’ve learned from running a creative agency is that it is a singular life. That is, the man at the top determines vision and direction. And of course, in the midst of accepting accolades for success, must take the blame for failure. It isn’t anyone else fault. Invoking that straw man and laying fault at the foot of a predecessor is cowardly.

It is no small coincidence that I am writing this on the eve of the Presidential Debates and the looming elections. It is going to be very interesting because the election may be tight or stolen by phantom voters. (Ironically, ideologue Rahmm Emanuel is running Chicago and there a rumor that graves have open and five thousand zombies have been spotted filling out voter registration cards). Voter suppression may also be an issue, but not as rampant as some have claimed and were disproved. However, it is a fact that Chicago had a fire at the turn of the 20th century, and democrat John F. Kennedy got at least 75,000 ‘votes’ from dead people. As I said, Rahmm is rummaging the tombs.

This is not the subject of this blog but I am concerned about the times ahead. In some states unemployment at depression level, and as always, among Blacks and Latinos. There is nothing being spoken by either candidate that suggests either of them will address this during the debates. On the strength of our present Administration’s contentment allowing people to be out of work and draw benefits for 99 weeks, my prayer is that we will not have more of the same Imperial apathy. The economy could have been revved up if the desire was there. It hasn’t been.

In tough times businesses should do everything necessary to stay open, including squeezing more out for their advertising budgets. That may sound ridiculous, but there’s an old saying: “Do you know what happens when you don’t advertise? Not a damned thing.” The truth of this adage hurts. As the creative director for an agency I am biased. If a business increases marketing, that business will make more money and will either hire more people, or hold things even by not laying off personnel.

Here is the point. If there is any such thing as an inalienable right, it is having a lifestyle far above starvation. Families must flourish. Historically, when they do not, the nation perishes. Hopefully this cause-and-effect scenario will play out, but in the times ahead we should give a damn.

Politically, isn’t actually caring a novel concept? I don’t expect the cigarette Smoking Man in the skinny boy suit to understand.

I keyed in the service number of a serving soldier who is based in Sibu, whose name is Christopher Bengga which is 1099804 he becomes Fadzil bin Abdul Rahman born in 1946. Some of the people wrote to me previously saying tha my service number was similar to the old IC’s. I think that is a load of bull. I further using this site http://7ranger.blogspot.com/ of my contacts which had service numbers in there, tinkered with the numbers some my ex soldiers.

I would like to note only three things.

1. Considering the amount of money being thrown around in Hulu Selangor, added to the promises of even more money if Barisan Nasional wins the by-election, there is no reason in the world why the MIC candidate should not sail in with very little effort. And they should be able to sail in with no less than a 5,000-vote majority. In fact, a majority of 8,000 votes would be more like it considering how many votes they have already bought with the millions being thrown around.

2. However, I would agree with ‘Dawning Eyes’ that Zaid Ibrahim is going to win. But I disagree with his prediction that Zaid is going to win with a 900-1,500-vote majority. I am predicting a 1,500-2,500-vote majority for Zaid.

3. But for this to happen the Pakatan Rakyat election machinery must ‘lock up’ the kampongs and settlements at around 10.00pm tonight, two hours before midnight. And that is about five hours or so from now. Come midnight, all campaigning will end and that will be when Barisan Nasional will launch its ‘midnight raids’. Cars with bags of cash will penetrate the kampongs and settlements and the voters will receive huge sums of money.

So, by midnight tonight, the Pakatan Rakyat machinery must set up ‘roadblocks’ to prevent the Barisan Nasional cars from entering the kampongs and settlements. Guards must be posted at all entry points and ‘backdoors’ to the kampongs and settlements and any suspicious cars must be stopped and turned back.

If necessary, force must be used, and if possible, the bags of cash should be confiscated.

Most likely, though, these convoy of cars will be escorted by the police because Barisan Nasional knows that there will be attempts to stop them from entering the kampongs and settlements. So be prepared for bloody fights. Nevertheless, force is necessary to stop these cars from entering the kampongs and settlements. And for sure the Barisan Nasional people will be toughies who will be ready for a bloody fight.

So we call upon all able-bodied men who are not scared of fisticuffs and punch-ups to turn out at 10.00pm tonight to help act as ‘home guards’ and prevent the Barisan Nasional cars from getting through. If they are allowed to get through and the bags of money are distributed, then Barisan Nasional will win with a 3,000-5,000-vote majority instead of Zaid winning with a 1,500-2,500-vote majority.

Zaid Ibrahim Is The Man

All the previous by-elections saw the distinct desperation from BN wanting to win. In their do or die heave for the final push, everything goes in Hulu Selangor!

The win in this by-election in Hulu Selangor plays a vital role and a yardstick to project the chances from the two sides in the coming Sibu by-election for an anticipated edge.

Judging from the demeanour of the voters, they definitely have their mind made up whom they want to represent them in parliament.

In such chessboard of political game, PR has played along well by turning the table around and the advantages become obvious to garner for sympathy votes.

The BN choice of Kamal or Alan or Nathan or Appu is the wrong choice indeed! But with the goodies given and all the promises to come, Kamal will not be thrashed brutally by the voters in his constituency.

Which way will the wind blow? The “ceramah” tonight will provide the additional “punch” to cement the choice for tomorrow’s D-Day!

Say what you like, it is going to be a clear cut result for PR to retain the Hulu Selangor parliamentary seat.

Again we see the strong-arm tactics of UMNO dominating the BN, by pushing through the nomination of UMNO’s chosen candidate.

Samy Vellu and his deputy G Palanivel has lost face and are sulking in the dark somewhere.

Further reports that four MIC divisions are dissolving (more than 1200 voters) in protest over UMNO’s inteference.

BN has always harped on the disunity of the Pakatan Rakyat, but see who is disunited now?

Pakatan rakyat had their candidate Zaid Ibrahim ready, willing and able.

Whereas BN hd to resort to much horseplaying where noone came out happy. Everyone in BN just interested in gaining and maintaining power.

With the election in Hulu Selangor being a 4 corner tussle between Pakatan Rakyat, BN and 2 other indepedents, personally I think a large win for the Pakatan Rakyat candidate is not unforseen.

“Impossible Numbers Certified in NY-23

“The election results certified by the St. Lawrence County Board of Elections for New York’s 23rd Congressional District contain some numbers that are mathematically impossible.  These numbers were requested in person and transmitted by e-mail just hours before certification on Tuesday, November 24th, 2009.

For six election districts in St. Lawrence County (the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 7th districts in Canton, the 14th district in Massena, and the 2nd district in Oswegatchie) negative numbers appear in the column for “blank” ballots, known in other states as “undervotes.”

Blank vote counts are ballots in which the voter did not choose any candidate in a given election and are determined by subtracting the total number of votes cast for the candidates from the number of voters who completed ballots.  The remaining number would be those voters who didn’t cast a vote for that election.

In Canton’s 7th district, the certified results show a total of 148 ballots cast. The results of those votes were counted as 88 votes for Owens, 11 votes for Scozzafava, and 80 votes for Hoffman.  The problem is that these numbers add up to 179 votes counted for the candidates, and there were only 148 ballots cast;  St. Lawrence County certified these numbers to the state as accurate with the number of ‘blank’ ballots reported as -31.

The Board of Elections stated repeatedly that their numbers add up, and strictly speaking, they do.  But negative numbers should not be required to make this happen. 

Election analysts refer to this phenomenon as “phantom voters,” because they are apparitions.  They do not actually exist.  There can never be more votes counted for any office than the number of actual voters who cast ballots.  There could be one or two, if on occasion an actual voter forgot to sign the poll book, but never 31.”

“Fundamentally, the fault does not lie with the Board of Elections, although perhaps they should have noticed the negative numbers before certifying them.  The fault lies with computerized vote counting and our willingness to trust it.
It has already been reported that zero votes were incorrectly reported in numerous precincts in Jefferson, Madison, and Oswego Counties for one of the Congressional candidates, and that voting machine failures occurred in dozens of polling places in at least three different counties.
In St. Lawrence County, ballots from eight polling places had to be hand counted due to voting machine failure.  Machines in Louisville, Waddington, Clare, and Rossie “broke” early in the voting process on Election Day.  Republican Commissioner Deborah Pahler said that the machines kept “freezing up… like Windows does all the time”.  Machines in Hermon, Lawrence, Colton’s 2nd district, and Massena’s 1st and 2nd districts failed to print the results. Frank Hoar, an attorney for the Democratic Party, initially ordered the impoundment of malfunctioning machines but released the order on November 5th so that Bill Owens could be sworn in to Congress in time to vote on the House health bill on November 7th.
Electronic vote counting is much too vulnerable to failure and/or manipulation.  If a mechanical (lever-style) machine breaks down, the failure is visible, and only the one machine is affected.  With electronic vote counting, one person can change the outcome of an election and not leave a trace.  This has been shown over and over again in scientific studies, including those commissioned by the Secretaries of State in California and Ohio.
But more than that, how can we have a democracy if we cannot know if the vote count is accurate?  If election officials cannot know, and if the candidates cannot know, and if the voters cannot know that the official results are true and correct, why even have an election?  Why go through the motions?”

Several days ago, as I am prone to do, I read the New York State Election statutes. Before the election in 2008 I read almost half of the 50 states election laws. Here are some of those statutes regarding voting irregularities. Read them and decide if any of them apply to the chicanery that has taken place.
“ §  17-106.  Misconduct  of election officers. Any election officer who
  wilfully refuses to accord to any duly  accredited  watcher  or  to  any
  voter  or candidate any right given him by this chapter, or who wilfully
  violates any provision of the election law relative to the  registration
  of  electors or to the taking, recording, counting, canvassing, tallying
  or certifying of votes, or who wilfully neglects or refuses  to  perform
  any  duty  imposed  on  him  by  law,  or  is guilty of any fraud in the
  execution of the duties of his office,  or  connives  in  any  electoral
  fraud, or knowingly permits any such fraud to be practiced, is guilty of
  a felony.

§  17-108.  False  affidavits;  mutilation,  destruction  or  loss  of
  registry list or affidavits. 1. Any person who wilfully  loses,  alters,
  destroys or mutilates the list of voters or registration poll ledgers in
  any  election  district,  or  a  certified  copy thereof, is guilty of a
  misdemeanor.
    2. An applicant for registration who shall make, incorporate or  cause
  to  be  incorporated  a  material  false statement in an application for
  registration, or in any challenge or other  affidavit  required  for  or
  made  or filed in connection with registration or voting, and any person
  who knowingly takes a  false  oath  before  a  board  of  inspectors  of
  election,  and  any  person  who  makes  a material false statement in a
  medical  certificate  or  an  affidavit  filed  in  connection  with  an
  application for registration, is guilty of a misdemeanor.
    3. A person who shall wilfully suppress, mutilate or alter, or, except
  as  authorized  by  this chapter, shall destroy, any signed challenge or
  other affidavit required  for  or  made  or  filed  in  connection  with
  registration or voting, and any person who, except as authorized by this
  chapter,  shall  remove such an affidavit from the place of registration
  or polling place, is guilty of a felony.
    4. A person other than the applicant who, prior to the filing  of  the
  application,  shall  willfully suppress, mutilate, materially alter, or,
  except as authorized by this chapter, destroy a signed  application  for
  registration by mail, is guilty of a misdemeanor.

§  17-120.  Misconduct  in  relation  to certificate of nomination and
  official ballot. A person who:
    1. Falsely makes or makes oath to, or fraudulently defaces or destroys
  a certificate of nomination or any part thereof; or,
    2. Files or receives for filing a certifiate  of  nomination,  knowing
  that any part thereof was falsely made; or,
    3.  Suppresses  a certificate of nomination which has been duly filed,
  or any part thereof; or,
    4. Forges or falsely makes the official indorsement of any ballot; or,
    5. Having charge of official ballots, destroys, conceals or suppresses
  them, except as provided by the law. is guilty of a felony.

§  17-124.  Failure  to  deliver  official ballots. Any person who has
  undertaken to deliver official ballots to  any  city,  town  or  village
  clerk,  or  inspector  as  authorized  by  this chapter, and neglects or
  refuses to do so, is guilty of a misdemeanor.

§  17-128. Violations of election law by public officer or employee. A
  public officer or employee who knowingly and wilfully omits, refuses  or
  neglects  to  perform  any  act  required  of him by this chapter or who
  knowingly and wilfully refuses to permit the doing of any act authorized
  by this chapter or who knowingly  and  wilfully  hinders  or  delays  or
  attempts  to  hinder  or delay the performance of such an act is, if not
  otherwise provided by law, guilty of a felony.

§ 17-130. Misdemeanor in relation to elections. Any person who:
    1.  Acts  as  an  inspector  of election or as a clerk at an election,
  without being able to read or write the  English  language,  or  without
  being otherwise qualified to hold such office; or,
    2.  Being  an inspector of election, knowingly and wilfully permits or
  suffers any person to vote who is not entitled to vote thereat; or,
    3. Wilfully and unlawfully obstructs, hinders or delays,  or  aids  or
  assists  in  obstructing  or  delaying  any  elector  on  his  way  to a
  registration or polling place, or while he is attempting to register  or
  vote; or,
    4.  Electioneers on election day or on days of registration within one
  hundred feet, as defined herein, from a polling place. Said  prohibition
  shall  not  apply  to  a  building  or room that has been maintained for
  political purposes at  least  six  months  prior  to  said  election  or
  registration  days,  except  that  no  political  displays,  placards or
  posters shall be exhibited therefrom. For the purposes of this  section,
  the  one  hundred feet distance shall be deemed to include a one hundred
  foot radial measured from the entrances, designated by the inspectors of
  elections, to a building where the election  or  registration  is  being
  held.
    5. Removes any official ballot from a polling place before the closing
  of the polls; or,
    6.  Unlawfully  goes  within  the  guard-rail  of any polling place or
  unlawfully remains within such guard-rail after having been commanded to
  remove therefrom by any inspector of election; or,
    7. Enters a voting booth with any voter or remains in a  voting  booth
  while  it  is occupied by any voter, or opens the door of a voting booth
  when the same is occupied by a voter, with the intent to  watch  such  a
  voter  while  engaged  in  the  preparation  of  his  ballot,  except as
  authorized by this chapter; or,
    8. Being or claiming to be a voter, permits any other person to be  in
  a  voting booth with him while engaged in the preparation of his ballot,
  except as authorized by this chapter, without openly protesting  against
  and asking that such person be ejected; or,
    9.  Having  lawfully  entered  a  voting booth with a voter, requests,
  persuades or induces such voter to vote any particular ballot or for any
  particular candidate, or makes  or  keeps  any  memorandum  of  anything
  occurring  within  the  booth,  or  directly  or  indirectly, reveals to
  another the name of any candidate voted for by such voter; or,
    10. Shows his ballot after it is prepared for voting, to any person so
  as to reveal the contents, or solicits a voter to show the same; or,
    11. Places any mark  upon  his  ballot,  or  does  any  other  act  in
  connection  with his ballot with the intent that it may be identified as
  the one voted by him; or,
    12. Places any mark upon, or does any other act in connection  with  a
  ballot  or  paster  ballot,  with  the  intent that it may afterwards be
  identified as having been voted by any particular person; or,
    13. Receives an official ballot from any person other than one of  the
  clerks or inspectors having charge of the ballots; or,
    14.  Not being an inspector of election or clerk, delivers an official
  ballot to a voter; or,
    15. Not being an inspector of election,  receives  from  any  voter  a
  ballot prepared for voting; or,
    16.  Fails to return to the inspectors of election, before leaving the
  polling place or going outside the guard-rail, each ballot not voted  by
  him; or,
    17.  Wilfully  defaces,  injures,  mutilates, destroys or secretes any
  voting maching which belongs to any municipality or board  of  elections
  for use at elections, and any person who commits or attempts to commit a
  fraud in the use of any such voting machine during election; or,
    18.  Not  being  lawfully authorized, makes or has in his possession a
  key to a voting maching which has been  adopted  and  will  be  used  in
  elections; or,
    19.  Not  being  an inspector or clerk of election, handles a voted or
  unvoted ballot or stub thereof,  during  the  canvass  of  votes  at  an
  election; or,
    20.  Intentionally  opens an absentee voter’s envelope or examines the
  contents thereof after the receipt of  the  envelope  by  the  board  of
  elections and before the close of the polls at the election; or,
    21.  Wilfully  disobeys any lawful command of the board of inspectors,
  or any member thereof; or
    22. Induces or attempts to induce any poll clerk, election  inspector,
  election  coordinator,  or  officer,  clerk  or employee of the board of
  elections discharging any duty or performing any act  required  or  made
  necessary by the election law, to do any act in violation of his duty or
  in violation of the election law; or,
    23.  Not  having  been appointed or named an inspector of elections or
  clerk and not having taken the  oath  for  such  office  shall  wear  or
  display  any  button,  badge  or  emblem  identifying  or  purporting to
  identify such person as an inspector of election or clerk, is guilty  of
  a misdemeanor.

§   17-136.  False  returns;  unlawful  acts  respecting  returns.  An
  inspector or clerk of an election who intentionally makes,  or  attempts
  to  make,  a  false  canvass  of  the ballots cast thereat, or any false
  statement of the result of a canvass, though not signed by a majority of
  the inspectors, or any person who induces or attempts to induce any such
  inspector or clerk to do so, is guilty of a felony.

§  17-148.  Bribery  or intimidation of elector in military service of
  United States. Any person  who,  directly  or  indirectly,  by  bribery,
  menace  or  any other corrupt means, controls, or attempts to control an
  elector of this state enlisted in the military  service  of  the  United
  States, in the exercise of his rights under the election law, or annoys,
  injures or punishes him for the manner in which he exercises such right,
  is guilty of a misdemeanor.

 §  17-166.  Penalty.  Any person convicted of a misdemeanor under this
  article shall for a first offense be punished by  imprisonment  for  not
  more  than  one  year, or by a fine of not less than one hundred dollars
  nor  more  than  five  hundred  dollars,  or  by  both  such  fine   and
  imprisonment.  Any  person  who,  having been convicted of a misdemeanor
  under this article, shall thereafter be convicted of another misdemeanor
  under this article, shall be guilty of a felony.

 § 17-168. Crimes against the elective franchise not otherwise provided
  for.  Any  person  who  knowingly and wilfully violates any provision of
  this chapter, which violation is not specifically covered by any of  the
  previous sections of this article, is guilty of a misdemeanor.

§  17-170.  Destroying  or  delaying  election  returns.  A  messenger
  appointed by authority of law to receive and carry a report, certificate
  or certified copy of  any  statement  relating  to  the  result  of  any
  election,   who  wilfully  mutilates,  tears,  defaces,  obliterates  or
  destroys the same, or does any other act which prevents the delivery  of
  it  as  required by law; and a person who takes away from such messenger
  any such report, certificate or certified copy, with intent  to  prevent
  its  delivery,  or  who  wilfully  does  any injury or other act in this
  section specified, is guilty of a felony.

Let’s take a look at each race, considering simply the total votes counted, and comparing this to the total votes in the Congressional race on the same ballot:

For the State Supreme Court race:  39, 969 votes

For the NY-23 Special Election: . . . . 24, 349 votes

For County Coroner: . . . . . . . . . . . . 29, 664 votes

That 15,620 more votes were cast in the State Supreme Court Race than in the Congressional Race, seems simply unbelievable. That means that nearly 40% of the voters who voted, cast no vote in the Congressional Race! Unbelievable!”

For us, it symbolises ‘V’ – for victory – not just in terms of votes, but for victory of People’s Power.

Even before a single ballot has been cast, Pakatan Rakyat has won for its commitment to multiculturalism and justice.

The last ten days have seen the most racist and vilest campaign ever, launched by Barisan Nasional. I am too tired to upload photos of these publications. All that so-called reflection of BN after its devastating loss on 8th March was a whole lot of hot air. That so-called apology over the keris-waving of Umno Youth was as empty as Saiful’s ‘sumpah‘.

Since 8 March, BN has not changed. There is no repentance, no remorse. Instead, this time round, they issue even more blood-curdling calls for vengeance against the Chinese and Indians. We have been called ‘babi’ (pigs), ‘bangsa asing’ (foreigners), amongst other derogatory terms. Leaders of MCA, MIC, Gerakan, PPP – buat tak tau aje.

So this is the future that Barisan Nasional has in store for us.

Anwar could have played to the gallery. He could have left out the bits about his vision about a truly multicultural Malaysia when he spoke in the Malay villages. He could have said, “You guys first, the rest second’.

But he didn’t. He defended the right for all to coexist and work together for a better Malaysia. His courage to stand up for his vision humbles all of us.

All intelligence data coming in shows Anwar Ibrahim will win tomorrow. The only thing that can stop this are BN’s 6000 postal and phantom voters.

By now, BN’s massive machinery would know how many outstation voters will not be returning and from its ‘cash-for-your-IC-details’ campaign drive. It has worked out the ‘winning’ formula for Arif Shah, who ran a lacklustre lonely campaign, yet was confident of a victory between 500-1000 as early as two days ago.

Which is why, if anyone out there – in KL, Selangor, Johor, Kelantan etc – knows of any outstation Permatang Pauh voters, please urge them change their minds and return to cast their ballots. If they have transport problems, please help them out.

If they don’t, someone else will be voting on their behalf for BN. And to please return to cast their votes as early as possible.

Their one vote makes a difference. Of giving 27 million people a real future against Barisan Nasional’s corrupt racist rule. One vote can give 27 million people a chance of a lifetime. That one vote can save Malaysia and put us back on track.

One vote to free us all. MERDEKA!

The oldest man known was Shigechiyo Izumi, born in the Amami Islands, Japan on 29 June 1865 and attained the age of 120 years 237 days when he died on 21 February 1986.

If the News Straits Times’ report on 28 February 2008 is accurate, Malaysia may have both the oldest man and the oldest woman in the world as the Election Commission has listed two 128 year olds in their voters’ list for the state of Selangor. It was also reported that Selangor has a total of 23 voters above the age of 100 years. The air in this state must be good for longevity

Without any ounce of shame nor of any semblance of journalistic integrity, the mainstream media these days publish the most biased of news. We were told that everything good is to be associated with Barisan Nasional, and everything bad with the opposition parties.

It’s one thing being served with ‘Undilah Barisan Nasional‘ advertisements on radio, television and the print media, but to actually use the media as direct propaganda tools is something a wholly different level altogether.

Just flip through the ‘opinions’ column in your local dailies; it’s difficult to find the relatively impartial views amongst the swathes of BN-skewered ‘commentaries’. Or turn on your television and watch the 8pm news to see how the manifestos of the opposition parties is systematically dissected, along with ‘views’ from ‘prominent’ intellectuals on how the manifestos supposedly, pardon my French, suck.

It’s enough to make you stop reading the papers or watching the news.

How come no space is allowed for opposition voices? Are you telling me that the opposition cannot come up with enough money to buy a full page advertisement in the newspapers?

The allegations that the votes are rigged, phantom voters and mala fide use of postal votes all remain allegations. No concrete proof has been offered so far, so we do not know for sure the truth in those claims. But if someone was to ask me whether I think the elections are fair, I’d say this: it’s not.

Why? Because of the blatant use of the mainstream media by the ruling coalition.

Earlier this week, electoral reform group Bersih has presented proof of the existence of 104 voters aged above 100 in the Selangor electoral roll to the Selangor EC.

Pressed by a reporter on this issue, he rebutted: “You want to argue over small things like this? You’re questioning me like in a court of law.” (Malaysiakini, 14 Feb 2008)
