Profile of a Travel Nurse by Amy Nutt Travel nurses are nurses who travel to different locations for

Profile of a Travel Nurse

by Amy Nutt

Travel nurses are nurses who travel to different locations for short-term working assignments. Travel nurses often work for hospitals, doctors offices, and in the medical administration field. Travel nurses are usually hired to fill temporary work shortages such as peak work times, maternity leave, and long term illnesses of permanent workers. Medical facilities will pay a high salary to fill short term periods. Assignment can be a few days or several months. An assignment usually runs for about- weeks.

To obtain a career in travel nursing, you must first have the appropriate credentials. The usual requirements for becoming a travel nurse are a minimum of one year of clinical experience and a state employment license granted by the states nursing board. You should have a nursing degree from a recognized nursing school and have all the skills needed to fill a particular position. Not all hospitals recognize one year vocational diploma programs. Medical facilities expect travel nurses to know what they are doing on the first day of the assignment. That is one reason why they pay top dollar for a travel nurse. They expect the travel nurse to have the knowledge and skills to adapt quickly and efficiently.

There are a number steps to achieving a career as a travel nurse. First, one should apply to a travel nurse agency. These agencies are actively involved with hospitals across the country and with many International hospitals. They have the knowledge of open travel nurse positions and they match the travel nurse with the staffing needs of the medical facility.

Once a person is accepted into the travel nurse agency, the recruiter will match that person with the assignment. The recruiter will help the travel nurse with the interview process, obtain essential state licenses, assist with housing and travel, and arrange for the appropriate benefits and pay. The recruiter receives a fee, but the travel nurse receives their knowledge and experience.

Although each state has its own nurse licensing requirements, they do provide temporary licenses. Some temporary licenses can last up to a year. Registered nurses have the advantage because their national board exam covers state requirements. Having a nursing agency recruiter can be helpful as they will assist you in securing your temporary license.

Because of the travel arrangements that need to be made for each assignment, travel nurses tend to prefer recruiting agencies. These agencies are experienced and can make travel arrangements quickly and efficiently. If traveling out of the country, one needs to secure a visa and have proof that they are a graduate of a reputable institution. It is important to maintain a current resume with valid supporting documents.

The life of a travel nurse requires maintaining a constant travel schedule that includes:

Maintaining a Check List: A week before you depart, have a list of all the necessities you need and check them off as you pack. This includes documents, clothing, books, etc.

Research Work Location: Prepare for cultural differences, personal safety issues, and proximity to stores, restaurants, and supermarkets. This will minimize unexpected stressful events.

Move In Early: Moving in a day or two early will allow you to become familiar with youre your work location and the surrounding community.

Most nurses enter the field of travel nursing jobs so they can travel, experience different work environments, make a good living, and maintain a flexible work schedule. Travel nursing is also an excellent way for recent graduates to find out where they would like long-term employment. The Professional Association of Nurse Travelers, a non-profit national organization representing nurse travelers in the US, is a great organization to consult with regarding a career in travel nursing. There are also many traveler nurse blogs and forums where one can gain more insight into the pros and cons of travel nursing.

An international week of action targeting the online sale of counterfeit and illicit medicines has h

An international week of action targeting the online sale of counterfeit and illicit medicines has highlighted the dangers of buying such medicines online.

Due to an ever-increasing number of websites supplying dangerous and illegal medicines, INTERPOL and the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) International Medical Products Anti-Counterfeiting Taskforce (IMPACT) have this week co-ordinated 24 countries to launch Operation Pangea II.

National medicines regulators, police and customs have extensively collaborated in this global campaign.

The operation focused on the three principle components of an illegal website, the Internet Service Provider (ISP), payment systems and the delivery service.

Internationally, more than 16,000 packages were inspected by regulators and customs resulting in the seizure of nearly 167,000 illicit and counterfeit pills. During the operation, Internet monitoring revealed 751 websites to be engaged in illegal activity including offering controlled or prescription only drugs.

The public will be advised through global awareness campaigns that purchasing medicines from unregulated websites significantly increases the risks of obtaining counterfeit, sub-standard and dangerous products.

In the United Kingdom, enforcement officers from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) raided suspected premises in London, Chelmsford, Romford, Bristol, Brighton, Stoke-on-Trent, Leicester and Shrewsbury.

Three arrests were made, six websites have been closed down and £300,000 worth of illicit medicines were seized, as well as quantities of controlled drugs.

The types of medicines the MHRA found included those for erectile dysfunction, hair loss, contraception, weight loss, pain relief, asthma, local anaesthesia and steroids.

MHRA Head of Enforcement, Mick Deats, said that what often looked like a professional online pharmacy would turn out to be an illicit website selling fake or illegal medication.

“This week’s operation has evolved from previously successful Internet Days of Action carried out by the MHRA.

“This week we have recovered a range of different medicines that were being supplied with no prescription and stored in unacceptable conditions by persons unqualified to dispense medicines.”

Mr Deats said illegal suppliers might be good at setting up a website but that doesn’t make them a pharmacist.

“These websites often look like the real deal, but if they don’t carry the green cross logo of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) and have a ‘bricks and mortar’ address, then they are often dealing illegally.

“The dangers of purchasing medicines from unregulated websites are that you just don’t know what you are taking,” he said. “The dosages could be either too high or too low, contain no pharmaceutical ingredient or a totally different ingredient to that stated.

“Illegal suppliers have no quality control or standards to abide by and people who purchase medicine from these sources will never know where the tablets they are putting in their mouths have actually originated or what they contain.

“If customers could see the filthy conditions in which some of these medicines were being transported, stored and handled, they wouldn’t touch them,” he added.

Mr Deats said criminals behind illegal internet pharmacies often enjoyed lavish lifestyles on the profits made by selling counterfeit and unlicensed drugs.

“People dealing in these types of businesses are criminals, often at the much higher end of the pay scale,” he said. “They substantially benefit financially from this unlawful trade.

“They are not healthcare professionals; in fact, they are not professional in any way shape or form. They are simply financially motivated criminals living a life of luxury at the expense of people’s health.

“This international operation is the only way to deal with an International problem and is a great example of the collaboration needed to tackle this type of crime. We will continue to use every power at our disposal to take action against those engaged in this illicit activity and confiscate the proceeds of their crimes.

“If you feel that your medicine may be counterfeit, contact by email to counterfeit@mhra.gsi.gov.uk.”

Notes

1.	In the UK, during the international Internet week of action, ten websites were investigated, 15 computers seized as well as mailing equipment. The MHRA, working with the UK Border Agency (UKBA), seized 147,000 tablets at Coventry Postal Hub.

2.	This initiative began at the MHRA in April 2006. It started as the UK Internet Day of Action (IDA). There have been five IDAs to date. It became the International Internet Day of Action in Nov 2008, with eight countries participating (co-ordinated by INTERPOL).

3.	Online pharmacies supply a massive range of medicines from weight and hair loss tablets, to anti-depressants, powerful painkillers and even anabolic steroids.

4.	The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) has introduced an internet pharmacy logo to help the public identify if a website is being operated by a bona fide pharmacy in Great Britain. More information is available athttp://www.internetpharmacylogo.org (external link)

5.	Further information about how the MHRA tackles counterfeit medicines and devices can be found at the following MHRA website link

All right. Brief foray into a day of negativity.

So, as may or may not have been noted in previous long medical history post, due to the amount of antibiotics that have been pumped through my body over the last year or two, my GI tract has been having some major functional errors. By which I mean pain whenever I eat, and a lot of times even when I don’t. Pain when I drink cold liquids, acidic liquids, very hot liquids. Pain with medicine. So, I did what anyone would do and saw a gastroenterologist, who promptly scheduled me for a combined endoscopy and colonoscopy (coming up December 7th – that’s going to be a fun blog post, I’m sure) due to some other unpleasant occurrences that are slightly worrisome.

I got a notice in the mail today saying that I owe $300 for the consult because I was “not eligible for coverage at this time.” Suffice it to say that I am, in fact, eligible, but for whatever reason there is a hang-up or mis-communication or otherwise ridiculous screw-up that now has Blue Cross thinking I am going to pay them $300. Let the records show I am unimpressed.

Additionally, when I went to the doctor in New York, he gave me three prescriptions to fill: one for Mepron, one for Zithromax, and one for an intramuscular injection medication. After J took time out of her schedule to drop off the RXs and wait for an hour – which is how long the pharmacy said it would take – they then informed her that they could not in fact fill any of the RXs that day and would need to order them, but could not do that until they talked to the doctor, whose handwriting they were unable to read regarding dosages.

Ok, fine. It happens. But today J gets a call (why they are constantly calling her and not me, I do not understand) saying that the Mepron was declined by insurance because I have “reached my limit”…..excuse me? I could understand if I was re-filling a narcotics prescription a week after the last time I had done so, but why anyone would want to drink EXTRA of this nasty, “citrus”-flavored liquid sludge is beyond me. And in any case, my insurance recently switched from Aetna to Blue Cross, and I have never filled this RX under the new company. So why the hang-up? I don’t understand, but it means I go another handful of days without starting the new regimen, and that’s extremely frustrating.

Yes, critics, I recognize that had I dropped them off the day I got back, this would have been settled by now. It doesn’t stop it from being a huge pain in the butt, though, and I am tired of coverage being subjective. I recognize that I am lucky to have insurance, but when I’m racking up hundreds of dollars in consults and can’t get the medication I need, it does create some intense frustration.

Positive outlook will return tomorrow. My apologies.

Best,

Not so long ago, people were confident that the State knew better and that it had their health as the topmost on its agenda. But as they read stories after stories of Governments bucking under the pressures of profit-driven Big-Business pharma groups, they felt the need to re-examine the credentials of hitherto unquestioned modern medical system and corroborate it with their personal experiences and with those of others.

Vaccination is based on the Germ Theory of diseases as proposed by Louis Pasteur in 1840’s that postulated that microorganisms are the cause of many diseases. This theory forms the foundation of modern medicine and clinical microbiology. We live in a world filled with pathogens, yet we do not always fall sick. Some of us can fall sick all of the time and all of us, some of the time, but all of us do not get sick all of the time. So, what protects us is the body’s immune system. Vaccination or immunization stimulates the immune system with an ‘immunogen’. For example, polio vaccine introduces weak polio virus so that the vaccinated person develops immunity against polio virus.

Yet, in the 1990s people’s confidence in science, medicine and government got steadily eroded and many turned away from conventional medicine. With the rising epidemic of autoimmune diseases and neurological dysfunction in children, people started questioning whether injecting toxic chemicals into the bodies of young children in the name of vaccination adversely affected their immune systems. They started wondering if bacteria and viruses were the cause of diseases or the result of diseases. In other words, did we fall ill first with processed food, stress and sedentary life style, and then created a biological environment in the body in which bacteria and viruses could thrive.

Before vaccination became the norm, nearly all children got the measles. Consider a little girl who had measles as a child with all that rash and fever for a few days and then recovered with a very strong anti-measles antibody response. These antibodies protect her unborn child against measles when she becomes pregnant years later and transfer also to her newborn child. Today’s vaccination program has altered this natural cycle and has left a newborn baby with a poor protection against measles as the vaccinated mother had poor reserve of the antibodies herself to start with.

How are Vaccines Made?

Basically, vaccines contain either killed viruses or bacteria, germ components or live organisms that have been made less virulent–a process called attenuation. While bacterial vaccines are not grown in cells, viruses need cells to survive. Hence the attenuated vaccine viruses are grown in either the cells of chicken eggs (flu vaccines).

Vaccines are complex pharmaceutical products and can contain additives such as gelatin or albumin to ensure that they withstand transport and storage. They may also contain residual quantities of formaldehyde, antibiotics, egg or yeast proteins used during the manufacturing process. For example, some vaccines, such as influenza vaccines, the yellow fever and rabies vaccine, are grown in eggs.

To enhance immune reaction against these organisms, manufacturers add powerful immune-stimulating substances called adjuvants such as squalene or aluminum. Adjuvants economize the amount of vaccine required and is an important factor in mass vaccination campaigns.

How Do Vaccines Harm The Body? (visit your ePHARMACY: http://www.drugswell.com/wow/index.php )

The vaccines can over-stimulate the immune system and paralyze it, especially if the recipient is very young or very old and nutritionally deficient. Squalene, an antioxidant, is found throughout nervous system and is recognized by the immune system. But when squalene is injected into the body, it incites the immune system to attack all the squalene in the body, not just the vaccine adjuvant alone. Many Gulf War veterans who received anthrax vaccines containing squalene were found to carry anti-squalene antibodies and are reportedly suffering autoimmune diseases collectively known as Gulf War Syndrome.

These effects occur because the vaccine enters the body through an unnatural passage unlike the germs that enter through the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth, pulmonary passages or GI tract, and trigger the body’s IgA (immunoglobulin) immune system. The IgA system is first line of defense and helps reduce the need for intense activation of the body’s immune system and is a different system from the one activated when a vaccine is injected into the body.

The immune adjuvants persist in the tissues, stimulating immune-activating cells over a prolonged period of time. With most natural infections the immune system gets activated quickly, but gets into normal mode fast and prevents excessive damage to normal cells in the body.

Vaccines can also contain a number of chemical toxins, including ethylene glycol (antifreeze), formaldehyde and phenol (carbolic acid). An article published in the medical journal Pediatrics about the research at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, says that the rates of allergies among children who had been vaccinated against measles were more than those who had been infected with the virus.

Researchers attribute dozens of chronic immunological and neurological conditions to mass immunization programs. An anti-vaccination hysteria surfaced in Britain in 2008 following an article in Lancet about a study suggesting a link between autism and the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine.

In the following videos doctors and other specialists from medical field speak out about H1N1 VACCINE DANGERS

(visit your ePHARMACY: http://www.drugswell.com/wow/index.php )

Opponents to vaccination contend that infectious diseases declined had steadily prior to vaccinations and cite examples of epidemics occurring in fully vaccinated populations. Many diseases like the bubonic plague receded away following better sanitation and better nutrition, especially with the inclusion of vitamin C. Yellow and scarlet fever incidences too fell without the benefit of vaccinations. Indeed smallpox epidemics disappeared decades before WHO intervened with its eradication programs, though rare instances still occur in war-torn and poor countries.

Much of the fear stems from a vaccine debacle more than 30 years ago. In 1976, a swine flu vaccine was associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome, in which the body damages its own nerve cells, causing weakness and sometimes paralysis.

Swine Flu Doctors Alert for Vaccine Induced Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Dr. Viera Scheibner a former Principal Research Scientist at Australia emphatically says we don’t need any vaccines at all and suggests going through the infectious diseases of childhood to have natural immunity. These are the guidelines issued by her for strengthening the immune system naturally:

Eliminate sugar and processed foods from your diet.

Include omega 3 fats in your diet.

Exercise regularly to keep the immune system fighting at its best.

Optimize your vitamin D levels.

Avoid stress. Get plenty of good quality sleep.

Wash your hands with a good chemical-free soap.

Anti-aging Skin Care

Your skin is the first thing that really shows your age. How you live your life, or have lived it so far, is pretty well indicated by the condition of your skin. These days, at least, there is a whole range of products on the market, to assist you in repairing any damage your skin may have been subjected to over the years.

The aging of our skin is inevitable. If you have spent your life in a bubble, chances are your skin is probably quite perfect. Unfortunately, for our skin, not many of us have lived in a bubble, and our skin has had to endure a life-time of abuse. Whether from over exposure to the sun, such as happened from the early sixties until the late nineties; over exposure to solariums, pretty popular since the late nineties; poor diet, smoking, or poor hydration – as we age our skin tends to show a history of our carelessness. With aging, our bodies and their natural defenses start to tire and weaken overall.

Anti-aging skin care products, there are many on the market, can wind back the body clock and keep that area of the body, that is so telling about your age, in the best condition possible. The use of these products helps to maintain a young and fresh look to your skin for a reasonable period of time. In addition to maintaining a youthful looking skin, anti-aging skin care products help to maintain resistance to disease, and overall resilience of the skin against wear and tear.

Anti aging skin care should begin way before the symptoms of aging appear on your skin. Serious anti-aging skin care, and following a routine of skin care, should start as early in life as a teenager. Diet plays an enormous role in your skin care regime, eating plenty of fruits, avoiding stress, drinking plenty of water and using natural therapies, can all delay the aging process, also maintaining a positive effect on your health overall.

We all have different skin types, from oily to dry and everything in between, so it will often take some trials and experimentation before you find the products that suit your skin in particular. There will be certain products that you might not be able to use due to various skin sensitivities and so on, however, once you find a product that suits your skin type it is wise to stick with it while it is working for you, but always be aware that as you age you might need to change some of the products that you use, simply because your skin will change with age and you will need to address the changing aspects of it over time.

It must be remembered that aging is a natural process and nothing can actually prevent it from happening. All we can hope to do with these measures against the aging of the skin, is to help slow the aging process. Your skin is a mirror of your lifestyle and the choices you have made thus far in your life, depending on those choices, it can only be of benefit to you and your skin to have an anti-aging skin care regime in place.

The Oatmeal Diet: The Key to Losing Weight

Oatmeal has long been considered a health food and recently, a dieting food as well. It is a dieter’s dream meal: it is rich in nutrients and carbohydrates that by itself it can already be considered a complete meal. The key to losing weight is by having a good breakfast. And a bowl of oatmeal can help you with it. But do not let yourself be misled that oatmeal should only be eaten during breakfast because you can also have it for lunch or dinner. Just make sure that you are eating the right proportions because too much of anything is still bad for your health Drugswell’s Blog drugswell.wordpress.com . Here’s a simple oatmeal regimen that you can follow. If you religiously do this, you can see considerable results in about two weeks. For breakfast: one bowl of oatmeal and a piece of fruit For lunch: one bowl of oatmeal and a piece of fruit For a snack: it is always advisable that you snack on fruit but if you can’t avoid eating starchy foods, just make sure it is in a reasonable amount. Read more in Weight Loss « My Weight is It a Problem or Simply an Illusion How to Lose Weight » For dinner: while eating oatmeal is still a good idea for your dinner, however you might quickly get fed up with it after already eating it twice earlier. Dinner is the excellent time to have a plate of vegetables with a small portion of meat or fish. As you can see, oatmeal is preferably eaten during the first half of the day. The idea behind this is that since it provides a great deal of energy, it will give us the energy we need to go through the day. A light meal at night is preferred especially because you are just a few hours away from going to bed. And you might probably already know that you burn less energy when you are sleeping.
