Recently, I have been trying to bring more and more original content to the site. A couple of weeks

Recently, I have been trying to bring more and more original content to the site. A couple of weeks ago, I started thinking about how MHC should really have some sort of podcast or monthly mix that features all of the music being released in the heavy bass music spectrum. So far, I’ve only met a handful of DJs in Indiana that fits the mind frame I was looking for. Phenom was the first person that came to mind. As he never pigeonholes himself into one genre, Phenom is capable of bridging electro, fidget, and dubstep in a single set. Hope you enjoy our first edition of Heavy Bass Freqs.

I will hopefully be updating with a tracklist later. UPDATE – Tracklist below the cut.

DOWNLOAD: MHC x Phenom – Heavy Bass Freqs Vol. 001 [Mixtape]

MHC: Standard MHC Question: Who can pull more ass in Thomas Crown Affair: you or Paul?

Phenom: For sake of debate I would say Paul. He makes a lot more mixes and tracks compared to me so he is much more widely known and recognized on them interwebz, plus he’s a super fresh dresser, no Bruno*

Rest of the interview below the cut + Tracklist.

MHC: What was your first introduction to heavy bass? What about the music has made you want to play it?

Phenom: I’m not as cultured in heavy bass as compared to most of the DJs I’ve been around. I owned Prodigy Fat of The Land when it came out and I was just blown away by it. There was something that grabbed me as soon as I heard Breathe and then Firestarter. I just couldn’t believe that people were making music that went this hard. I guess it was the feeling that did it for me, I wanted to recreate that chaos and feeling of complete let go that you could see in Smells Like Teen Spirit. I would say it went further than 90’s music even. Seeing the alternate cover of Sly And The Family Stone “There’s a Riot Going On” made me want to be up on stage sharing what I felt musically. I guess you could say I never wanted to be in the crowd.

MHC: How did Thomas Crown Affair come into being? Where would you like TCA to go?

Phenom: Thomas Crown Affair was the brainchild of Paul and I based upon diversifying electro in Bloomington. Whenever we did shows we would always play separate, never together. It made sense for us to combine our similarities along with our many differences in taste of music to create something bigger than two solo sets. We performed our first set officially as TCA in Louisville Kentucky during Kentucky Derby weekend. We played the front room at a pretty seedy club we had played previously taking a 1-3:30 am slot after a group of 40-something year old djs that played a lot of garbage music. They were pretty pissed when we opened up with Baltimore club and then went into some heavy basslines. We were there for the free booze all night and could care less.

MHC: What other music projects are you currently working on or have slated for the near future?

Phenom: Right now honestly I’m just swamped with shows. I don’t really have time to make tracks right now but I have been a little original material to work into my sets, small spurts like 30 seconds or so of original production that I like. I don’t really have the time to commit to making any official edits. With this being my Senior year at IU, the majority of my time is spent in the art studio for class or playing gigs. I plan on releasing a lot more mixes including one each month for MHC to play out and hopefully expose a different crowd to the music that I enjoy, despite the fact that it might not be brand new. New music does not always equal good music, a lot of people have forgotten that.

MHC: Dance music seems to be making a comeback. Why do you think it’s happening now after nearly a decade of floundering?

Phenom: The people are being exposed to it nonstop. It’s “kewl” now to be into electronic and bassline, hell many people even consider themselves avid listeners of dubstep now. I don’t really understand the evolution but from what I’ve heard it all goes in circles. Old is new and fresh again and new isn’t cool until X amount of days, months, or years later. I think with so many people becoming djs now to feed into their rockstar need, many of their friends have been forced to go to shows and support music they’ve never heard. From that they find a few favorite songs during a dj set and then shortly there after find themselves burning a copy of Major Lazer for their car ride. Like I said, I still don’t really understand it all. Oh and for the record; F*** DJ Hero. Djing should never be recreated without 2 turntables and a mixer in the real world. Playing a videogame doesn’t make you a DJ.

After 3 years I finally decide it’s time to part with my Athlon 3700+. The computer was good, and the Motherboard was extremely reliable and perfect for overclocking and even SLi nvidia cards (which I never got to try). I decide on this because I notice that most of the current games (like Bioshock, Crysis Warhead, Gears of War, Call of Duty4) seem to be laggy and choppy framerates. I just couldn’t take it any more, even at low settigns my Athlon 3700 + Geforce 7900GTO were struggling with these games. So I finally took the plunge and went multi-core, although I don’t feel I really need it, but it’s not like I can buy a single core CPU.

After much research I decide on the AMD Phenom II X2 550BE. Cheap processor that’s built for gaming with a huge 7.5 MB Cache and 45nm process @ 3.1GHz. Not only that, it’s unlockable! That’s right, a dual core CPU that can be unlock to a triple core or even a quad core CPU. I read about here: http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/535501-amd-phenom-ii-core-unlocking-guide.html

Combine this CPU with a SB710 chipset mobo, and you can unlock the cores (hopefully)
So I ended up getting the Gigabyte MA785G-UD3H with 4GB OCZ Gold XTC DDR2 RAM, and threw them in the Antec Sonata III 500 Case (which by the way is super quiet). The rest I grabbed from old rig and add them. I’ll probably upgrade my graphics card to ATI Radeon HD 3870 or 4870 sometime next year.

New Rig Summary:

AMD Phenom II X2 550BE @ 3.1Ghz (stock)
Gigabyte MA785G-UD3H Mobo
OCZ Gold XTC DDR2 2×2GB RAM
EVGA Geforce 7900GTO (Stock)
WD 160GB SATA2 HDD
Seagate Barracuda 1TB SATA2 7200.11 32MB HDD
Antec Sonata III 500 (Legendary Silence!)

Can’t wait to unlock the cores and start OCing this rig!

Tippmann Launches Electro-Pneumatic Marker, the X7 Phenom

New Flex Valve Technology provides greater air efficiency, more accuracy and ability to go from electronic to manual operation with the simple flick of a switch

BUFFALO GROVE

(October 21, 2009)

– Tippmann is very proud to be introducing the X7 Phenom, a next-generation .68 caliber paintball marker that’s truly in a class of its own. The unmatched benefits of this new electro-pneumatic marker include improved air efficiency, superior accuracy, manual or electronic firing and the flexibility to use either CO2 or compressed air. The heart of the Phenom is Tippmann’s patented Flex Valve Technology, a brand new technology that is not available on any other paintball marker. The Flex Valve operates below 300 PSI for improved air efficiency, giving players more than 1,400 shots from a single 68 cubic-inch, 4500 PSI tank. Also, with its Spool Valve Design, recoil is virtually eliminated for significantly-enhanced accuracy. The searless design of the Phenom also incorporates fewer wear parts, making maintenance easier than ever. And, even though the Phenom is three inches shorter than the standard X7, it will still accept more than 20 current X7 mods and upgrades, including the popular Flatline barrel.

“We’re extremely excited about the groundbreaking technology behind the new X7,” said Denny Tippmann, Jr., senior VP of research and product development for Tippmann Sports. “Flex Valve Technology truly represents a significant leap forward in marker design that delivers an all-new level of performance for those players who demand nothing but the best.”

Other features of the X7 Phenom, include:
New compact and lightweight aluminum body
Streamlined design with internal gasline and no cocking handle
Pushpin construction for easy field stripping
All-metal trigger for enhanced stability
Magnetically activated hall effect electronics

ADD ONE:
X7 Phenom with Flex Valve Technology
Redesigned Cyclone Feed System paddles that feed up to 20 balls-per-second without batteries
Piccatinny top rail to easily add new sights and handles
Air-thru stock compatibility
Internal regulator with new external-velocity adjustment
9.5″ high performance stone-honed barrel
Removable rear and front sights

“In developing this new marker, we initially considered designing a totally new platform, but the opportunity to make the ‘ultimate woodsball marker’ even better was too great to pass up,” said Patrick Ehren, vice president of sales and marketing for Tippmann Sports. “Combining the Flex Valve Technology with the existing X7 platform makes it easier for our loyal players to make the transition. Plus, we don’t have to ask our dealers to stock another complete set of mods. Of course, the existing X7 will continue to be available. But, the Phenom now becomes the pinnacle of woodsball markers.”

The new X7 Phenom will begin arriving in stores at the end of November or early December. The marker was designed in part based on the feedback and suggestions provided by players. In fact, several respected teams such as Team Tippmann Scotland, the Hellions, the Great Lakes Rangers, the Tippinators, Madball Legionaires and T.S.S.O.C. (Tri-State Special Ops Command) all provided helpful input and will now be playing with the X7 Phenom.

For more details about the X7 Phenom, players are encouraged to visit tipppmann.com. While online, those interested can watch an informational video, find a nearby dealer, review marker specifications or sign up for the Tippmann Forum. Of course, anyone looking to connect with other paintball players should also consider becoming a fan of Tippmann on Facebook or MySpace.

For more than 20 years, Tippmann Sports has been dedicated to quality manufacturing and the pursuit of cutting-edge technology and design. The company serves the paintball industry from its headquarters and manufacturing facility in Fort Wayne Indiana. Tippmann Sports’ complete line of paintball markers and related accessories can be found at paintball stores and fields as well as mass retail and sporting goods outlets throughout the world.

The Phenomenal X7! TippmannParts.com is now taking pre-orders for November delivery.

The new X7 Phenom from Tippmann has been labeled the “Ultimate Woodsball Marker”. Built along the current X7 body style, the X7 Phenom is already ahead of the game in accessories. It can accept over 20 original X7 mods and upgrades, even the Flatline barrel! With a new design bolt system, seen nowhere else in paintball, the X7 Phenom has the best technology in a smaller package. Almost 3 inches shorter than the X7, the Phenom is lighter and still has the Tippmann Mil-Sim look. It has Picatinny rails to mount all your tactical accessories!

The new Flex Valve system allows for faster rates of fire than blow back markers and can operate on either co2 or HPA. The blow forward design operates at a low 300 psi. That means more shots per tank, and a lot less kick and movement. You’ll be able to stay in the game longer and hit more targets with the super smooth operation of the new Flex Valve.

Semi or Full-Auto? You decide! The X7 Phenom incorporates the Hall-Effect trigger and safety system proven in the previous H.E. Grips. Easily switch from safe, to semi, to one of 5 firing modes. Just flick the switch and change your style of play from sniping to machine gunner! It’s a seamless change not only between modes, but from a mechanical operation to electronic.

Another feature players have wanted is the option of a mechanical backup to the electronic modes. If you get in a tight spot and your battery dies, flick back to semi and you’ve got full mechanical operation to fight your way out! But that’s not all! It’s a sear-less design. That’s right no sear in this baby. Less parts equals simplicity, less wear, and a smoother trigger pull.

Also included on the X7 Phenom is a redesigned cyclone feed. To keep up with the Flex Valve system, the need for an upgrade feed system was a must. The new design fires up to 20 bps is also easier on paint.

Does not qualify for the X7 rebate program.

This little nigga is 13 and is already 6′6. He looks like he could go toe-to-toe with grown men..

He also has the genes of athletes, both sides. He’s the son of former NBA player Mitchell Wiggins (yea I don’t know who that is either *kanye shrug*) and mother Marita Payne who was some sort of Olympic track star.

This is all too reminiscent of the young Lebron James..

Any More Superlatives Left? So often in contemporary operagoing and opera critique there is a bemoan

Any More Superlatives Left?

So often in contemporary operagoing and opera critique there is a bemoaning of talent on the level of the famed “Golden Age”…at least the second Golden Age (‘60–‘70s). The first one was in the mid-to-late 19th century, but noone’s around to remember that, thank God! It gets rather tiresome, and it especially disrupts the explorations of people experiencing the art for the first time. If I am a proponent of such talk (and I know I periodically digress), just slap me.

So, what a relief it is that in the current skating world we have a talent so undeniably great no such critique needs to be endured. It’s not exactly a new concept to praise “PHENOM” Kim Yu-Na, but that’s because it is so justly deserved. Does one person constitute a Golden Age? In this case, yes!

I just finished watching her FS at Trophée Eric Bompard (not to mention her SP!). This girl LEFT OUT a triple flip and still ended up with a personal best AND world record final score of 210.03, beating Mao Asada by 36 points. The missed jump was no more than a hiccup, and had no impact on the overall program. (Imagine what her score would have been had she not skipped the flip!) Thankfully, her program and costume support her Tiger Woods-scaled perfection. David Wilson’s (choreo.) “Piano Concerto in F” LP (Gershwin) enables her to flirt with the audience, judges, and cameras (ie: benefiting us couch potatoes)! Honestly, it looks like only Jeff Gillooly could stop her from being Olympic Champion now.

The Joy of Skating

It is truly inspiring to experience the art and athleticism of someone who is so complete in every way. “The House of Orser”, as I like to call it, which includes both Yu-Na and Adam Rippon, clearly nurtures not only skating excellence, but also the joy of skating. Isn’t that what it’s all about? Both of these skaters were among the few singles skaters at this competition who really portrayed that spirit on the ice. And, congrats to Adam for being the only U.S. skater on any of the podiums! What a great way to start his senior intl. career! I loved his “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” SP. It had shades of Matthew Savoie’s “Mission” LP…with a real soul, and spirituality.

I can’t leave out Nobunari Oda, who gave 120% in both programs. It’s so good to see him back on top! His Charlie Chaplin LP has loads of character, and really tells a story, something that is getting lost in the demands of the current COP. And, Tomas Verner’s SP to “Zorba the Greek” was also effervescent, boyish, and charming (costume included…I want one!).

Yukari Nakano’s “The Firebird” (Stravinsky) LP deserves a big thumbs-up. Marina Zueva (choreo.) has actually selected a piece of music that is fresh in the ladies’ field, and created a real dramatic arc, with emotion inducing moments. Yukari’s exotic unitard also supports the uniqueness of the program, and accentuates her exceptional athleticism.

Let ‘Er Rip!

Since the television commentators can’t say it, I will! Tatiana Tarasova, however great a coach she may have been for Yagudin, is sinking Mao Asada (and, apparently wasn’t a great fit for Shizuka or Sasha either). BOTH her programs hang around her neck like dead weights, when her former effervescent spirit likely wants to “sing” across the ice. I feel as if Tarasova is trying to turn Mao into Russia’s Pride (since they don’t have a realistic female Olympic Champion), rather than celebrating what makes her special, and bringing out what would really allow her to thrive. It reminds me of a chef who takes a traditional dish and works way too hard to make it new or different, thereby rendering it unrecognizable, OR like a heavy-handed conductor who is so eager to leave an imprint on a piece of music that they rob it of its inherent attributes. Please, call Lori Nichol before it’s too late!!! Kim’s timing to peek is proving to be as good as Mao’s is bad, in this Olympic season.

Who kidnapped the real Caroline Zhang and replaced her with a fembot? Perhaps it was what the commentator referenced as her outlook on these earlier competitions as “practice”, but NONE of her former spirit was in evidence, and her face was utterly expressionless. It was as if she didn’t want to be on the ice. Any chance it could be attributable to Anne Patrice McDonough-style “stage mother”-related burn out? She did skate very cleanly, excepting one step-out on a landing. Dig deep Caroline, you are VERY special and highly skilled…don’t get bogged down by the COP and downgrade concerns so much so that you offer up a flatlined performance (worthy of a fast-forward on TiVo).

Pairs/Ice Dance Overview

Inoue and Baldwin landed their throw triple axel for the first time since 4CC in ‘07. It was a beauty. I hope it gives them the needed kick in the pants to push themselves…I feel like they’re sort of going through the motions in the rest of their program, so if they’re going to beat out younger U.S. teams for an Olympic berth, they better really “bring it”, and proove they deserve to be there again.

I was horrified to see Savchenko and Szolkowy’s melt down. It was SO uncharacteristic, and I don’t believe they’ve ever done that before. But, perhaps it offered them some good learning, so they won’t “lose themselves” too much in their LP at the critical end of the season, leaving behind any details. I love their LP music (“You’ll Never Walk Alone”), but their costumes looked like they were ready for a Carmen Miranda or Brazilian Carnaval number!?

It was shocking to see Mukhortova and Trankov look as if they’ve spent the past year in pair’s therapy (“…and, Maria, how does that make you feel?”). Clearly they’ve successfully channeled their angst into their skating. Good for them. They do have a beautiful Russian classicism.

I was expecting Dubé and Davison’s “The Way We Were” LP to be on the level of Sale and Pelletier’s “A Love Story”, but I was let down. They have some great qualities, but there was very little story telling or one-ice flirting going on, for which the program begs. And, I didn’t get the feeling it is just early in the season…the program just didn’t seem to have that element at all, really.

In Ice Dance, I was only able to watch Virtue and Moir’s FD (“Symphony No. 5″, by Mahler), and it was/is an unqualified masterpiece. They will be nearly unbeatable in Vancouver. They embody passion, beauty, perfection, grace, to name just a few of their attributes. On the U.S. side, I have always been a Navarro and Bommentre fan, so I hope they can raise their placement as the season progresses.

Well I’ve been sick yet again, thought it was the flu but finally went to the doctor about it

Well I’ve been sick yet again, thought it was the flu but finally went to the doctor about it Thursday when I woke up around 7am hardly able to breathe and talking didn’t work very well. My voice has barely recovered still so it’s been hard for me to talk to anyone. So haven’t been able to talk to Kyle much other than on live by typing.
My doctor told me what the illness was but I can not remember now, started with a “P” but a lot of respiratory illnesses do. On Avelox for it, started taking that Tuesday and kept on and was told to just keep taking that rather than changing treatments. Was also written a script for Tessalon Pearles (Great stuff, though sometimes it doesn’t do much for the cough) but have been unable to fill it yet.

Haven’t done much on Maple Story, finally got like level 24-26, one of those and haven’t really played. Mainly logged in for 3 hours each day so I can get this quest done and get my Diligent Explorer medal. Not played any DFO in awhile since no one wants to play with me on there.

I’ve been looking at building a new PC lately, not having much luck with what I want. I need an AM2/2+/3 (preferably a 2+ or 3 board), with Nvidia chipset. I’ve found one from Asus, which is a great brand for me since I’ve had such great experiences with my other boards from them. But it seems to lack in extra features and pretty design, but if it gets the job done that’s just fine with me. I found a flashier board but its about a year old (which can be good as its been out longer and probably got some fixes out if it needed any) so kinda bent on which to get. Also need to pick out a CPU I would like, Possibly a Phenom II x4 or something would be great. I’d like to get one of those Phenom II TWKR ones but they aren’t too easy to find (one on eBay now though for about 200 at the moment, but alas no way to get it and probably won’t ever have the opportunity to again) or maybe one of the Phenom Blacks would be cool. I’ll also need RAM since my current one uses DDR, I’ve got a decent Antec power supply, but it’s not too powerful and won’t be able to handle the new stuff (it dies on me when I turn on my new cold cathode tubes I got, but the lights I have on in it now are pretty bright). Video card can wait if needed, I’ve got a 7600GT that I love but its out of date quite a bit now and the 9000 series is pretty affordable now, but I’d rather build with what I have now and save up if needed to get a nicer card later on.

The two boards that I’ve seen (if you know of more good ones that will meet my specifications please comment and let me know!) are the Asus M4N82 Deluxe and the ASUS M3N-HT Deluxe (I think thats the older board I couldn’t find the bookmark for it but the model # sounds about right). Anyone have experience with those and would like to share with me please feel free.
I’m set on a case right now, CMStacker (original not the 820 or whatever others they have), but I would like to pick up one of the Cooler Master HAF cases, I found one model of it for $99, but I can get the higher end model with extra bay and not plastic parts for something like $20 more but I could still build with the motherboard, processor ram and power supply and then upgrade case and video later if need be.

The current specs of my computer (Phoenix) that I use primarily can be found here.

Been talking a lot to my friend Blue, trying to help him get his laptop all fancified out and possibly get a new one since he found another model he likes better than the one he just got. Now helping him with upgrading his phone, been wanting to upgrade mine too (we’re on the same carrier so can look at both phones for us) since the current one I have is a bit outdated and busted up pretty bad and sometimes doesn’t work.

That’s about all I can think of now, I don’t think anyone reads this stuff anyway but I never know. Hopefully some of those that do will comment one day.

Sleep here I come!

Planning started for 2009 Halifax City Open (HCO), the day after the 2008 finished. Kevin ‘Big Can’

Planning started for 2009 Halifax City Open (HCO), the day after the 2008 finished. Kevin ‘Big Can’ Curry and the entire Tippinators Paintball team put in many long hours to ensure 2009 was going to top the “experience” that was HCO 2008.

The Atlantic Canadian paintball scene has gone through the Xball transition stage. Teams are used to 15 player rosters, 25 minute halves and 5 minute majors. We combined the 5 man format with quasi-xball rules, threw in some coaching and away we went, HCO was born.

With 32 teams registered in four divisions, the attendance topped last year and also included players from Quebec. Team PBL Shock, comprised of former World Champion All-American, Jeff Macdonald, plus Current and past members of Mirabel Impact Philip”Sparky”Guy, Gerry Harris and Bryce Coady, wee the team to beat.

The three man division was tough, as it always is. Usually this is the wild card division because it’s an assortment of new/old, ringers and non-ringers…..and this year was no exception.

Three Man Rookie is where it all begins. This is the division where players are introduced to the tournament paintball scene. It is so important that these players are introduced against teams of similar calibre. Play in this division was awesome, they not only gained the experience by playing but also by watching the more experienced players play. These guys are the lifeblood of our sport.

The most important feature to this years event was the pump division. The four man open pump division was tied together with the Maritime Heart Charity foundation. This was the First time a pump tourney was held and there was six teams competing in this division. There were run throughs, bunkering, gog shots, combat rolls, X-jumping and lots of fun. HCO Head Reff, Ken Gardiner was on hand representing Maritime Heart. Gardiner was elated, “Anytime the paintball community has a chance to give back, it should and a charity as close to my heart as this, is a great start, Thank you.”

The finals kicked off at 4:30 and the crowd was rocking. Coors Lite and PBL t-shirts were given away all day and the the trophies were gleaming. The intensity was building, especially in the 5man division as the Strict Union and Shock match was eagerly anticipated. During the day, we were very happy to see the amount of family watching the events. Too see relatives offering their support to players, is just awesome. Tournament players devote no less of their time to this sport then do hockey players and family support goes a long way towards legitimizing what we do.

Once again, this event could not have gone on without the following sponsors:
Mersey Road Paintball ()
Atlantic Xtreme Xball League (www.axbl.ca)
Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling (www.coke.ca)
BUYPBL.COM (www.buypbl.com)
Coors Lite (www.molson.ca)
Exalt Paintball (www.exalt.com)

Thanks to all the reffs: Ken, Gilbert, (Tippinators) Bruce Johnston, Justin Landry, Dan Lapham, Ben Van Horne, Mark Miller and Pat Hamblin. The tower crew (Tippinators) Chris Landry, Jason Thomson and Austin Flaherty, the beer tent crew, (Tippinator) Trevor Colwell, Heather Nairn and Branigan Gilles, the food crew, (Tippinators) Steven Fong, Josh Boiduk and Jim MacNeill, videographer (Tippinator) Richard Robinson, plus a big thanks to (Tippinator) Mark Miller for all of his hard work. Without the Tippinators, this event would not have been possible.

Thanks to everyone, BC Et AL
