What in the name of Baphomet is a “stealth metalhead”?  Webster’s Dictionary defines the term as…well, it doesn’t define it.  But if I were to try my hand at being a dictionary, I would say that it’s someone who keeps their love for metal on the down low.  Sadly, I don’t know any stockbrokers or bankers with Black Sabbath on vinyl, so here’s the next best thing: celebrities!  Because everybody loves celebrities!

5.     Rivers Cuomo

“progressive metal”

It’s no secret that Rivers Cuomo loves metal.  From their earliest years, Weezer professed an undying love of Satan and all things evil, even going so far as to invoke the dark lord himself on several of The Blue Album’s biggest singles.  But long before the blood sacrifices that made him a teen pop sensation, there was Avant Garde.

Yes, my friends, that’s Rivers Cuomo on lead guitar.  Did you hear that?  Those licks!  That shredding!  That, my friends, is what we call “the metal”.  Unfortunately, Avant Garde failed miserably to achieve anything in the way of success, (which is surprising given that every hair metal band in the 80s had a record deal.)  This lead to the band changing their name to Zoom before disbanding completely, likely due to their inability to pick out cool band names.

4.     Phil Elverum

What do you mean I have to wait another week for my Burzum import?

Most of you reading this probably don’t know who Phil Elverum is.  It isn’t really surprising since most of you apparently suffer a brain embolism at the thought of listening to anything that doesn’t suffix with “core”.  Despite that, Elverum is our number 4 stealth metalhead.

Known mainly for his band, Mount Eerie, the first Phil on our list rose to indie stardom earlier this year with his latest release, Wind’s Poem – a record informed by countless hours of poorly engineered black metal that I don’t have any interest in listening to.  In a world where hipsters ironically latch onto Xasthur, it’s his unabashedly unironic love that puts him on our list.  We would’ve put him higher, but you’re all a bunch of cunts who would probably bitch about it.

3.     Demi Lovato

Unleash the fucking fury.

Demetria Devonne “Demi” Lovato[1] (born August 20, 1992) is an American actress and singer-songwriter. She is best known for her role as Mitchie Torres in the Disney Channel Original Movie Camp Rock and Sonny Munroe in Sonny With A Chance.

Which is probably why it was so surprising when she openly stated that she enjoyed Job For A Cowboy and Dimmu Borgir.  While both bands ultimately fall on our list of all time Worst Bands Evar, it still fills us with joy at the thought of fingerblasting her to “Run To The Hills”.  At the very least, we’re looking forward to her eventual split with Phobia (now featuring even more guitar solos from Kerry King) once she leaves the safety of her Disney Channel backers.

2.     Ryan Adams

Much like our beloved Rivers, Ryan Adams has a not-so-secret love of metal.

Ironic or not, that shit slays.

1.     Phil Anselmo

We’re going to refrain from making jokes about Phil Anselmo lest he pull our balls out of our assholes.

“A ha!” you shout to no one in particular, “Phil Anselmo isn’t a stealth metalhead!  He was in one of the most popular metal bands of all time!  He even owns and operates Housecore Records – a label dedicated to bringing you the finest in metal-slash-hardcore!”

True enough.  Anselmo is largely known for fronting Pantera.  However, it is his credentials with side projects which earn him our top spot, often releasing more respectable albums from Christ Inversion, Down, and Necrophagia alongside shit like Cowboys From Hell.  Simply the fact that Pantera was not metal enough for Anselmo only cements our respect for the man.

Honorable mention: Apparently the singer from Jimmy Eat World worships Satan and listens to Godflesh or something.  Though we couldn’t be bothered to verify this information via Wikipedia, we would at this time like to speculate that the success of Jimmy Eat World may have nothing to do with their music and everything to do with blood orgies.

crowbar is the perfect name for this band. well, “Doom-laden NOLA-brand grave-digging dirgeing metal” would be the most accurate name, but not quite as punchy.

on this album, their first full length, issued way back when, the band is arguably at their finest. the music is unpolished and left raw and crackly by Philip Anselmo’s amazing production job. the album is slow, assertive, and honest from head to toe.

there are only ten tracks, which is a bit of a disappointment. or at least it was for me when i walked back from that small record shop about 2 miles from my house back in my freshman year of high school. i remember walking on the side of the road looking at the album and being let down that i spent 13 (it may have only been 12, i dont remember all that clearly) dollars on a 10  track cd. but then i got home and i played it on my dad’s stereo system. the album was unlike anything i had ever heard before. it was Black Sabbath meets Corrosion of Conformity meets Sunn 0))) meets Motorhead meets Pantera meets a whole lot of bourbon meets one serious singer. it is funny that i reacted like that. i had heard ‘Existence is Punishment’ and ‘All I Had I Gave’ before. but i hadnt liked them. they sounded ‘goofy’. but when i sat down and played this album i was quickly persuaded otherwise. the one song that stuck out to me as the absolute perfect crowbar song was actually a cover. track five, ‘No Quarter’.

the song is slow, building, and most of all painful. the singer’s voice on this album had a Keith Caputo circa ‘River Runs Red’ quality to it. there is such amazing honesty in the words and voice that it is almost off putting. when he sings ‘I Have Failed’ or ‘Existence is Punishment’ he actually believes it. and it hurts.

the album is beautiful though. like a perfect car-wreck, it just has this true beauty and serene destruction that must be seen to understand.

I did enough ranting last week with my posts on those ridiculous Guitar Hero “instruments” and the Kanye West debacle. All I want to talk about today is the awesomeness of the Down & Voivod show I went to on Friday night in Toronto.

I loved it. It was nothing more than an honest-to-goodness metal show. Tons of fun. FUN. No pretentious rockstar crap, just a bunch of dudes playing some awesome songs and being very appreciative of the couple thousand Canadians going crazy for them.

Voivod are, obviously, legends. The same can be said for Down, or at least it can be said about some of the guys in Down (Phil Anselmo of Pantera, Pepper Keenan of Corrosion of Conformity). They didn’t just come out and go through the motions, though – they were really enjoying themselves. This is what I want at a show. Phil came out and sang “Nothingface” with Voivod during their set, and Down’s set ended with the Voivod guys coming out and playing “Bury Me In Smoke” with them. This is stuff that they don’t HAVE to do, but it certainly made the evening feel more special.

Bands like It Dies Today and As I Lay Dying lead the overly saturated Metalcore market, and I mean that in the nicest way. Simply put, when I think of this genre I think of those two bands. So the real question this time around is how would new lead singer Jason Wood fit in? In 2006 “Sirens” was a mainstay in my running rotation, so from this reviewers perspective, Mr.Wood had a great deal to prove. The redone versions of “Sixth of June” and “Through Leaves and Over Bridges” (both from Sirens) were actually better then the originals- so I was optimistic!

Greatness is often imitated, but never duplicated. With “Lividity”, It Dies Today smashes the mold for greatness and crafts their own metal signature! The elements of metalcore still exist within this record, but the band wades into other musical waters to create a progressive record. Wood’s melodic vocals are simply melodic bliss. While at time the guitar work of the opus show off their ability to peel off killer pinch harmonics. Breakdowns are still the norm. Not to worry!

“Reckless Abandon” is the signature track of the record. It greets the listener with a riff reminiscent of As I Lay Dying’s “Forsaken”, but that is where the similarity ends.  A galloping bridge will stir pits silly, while the chorus is a melodic beauty. It sort of reminds me of something you would hear on a show on the CW, and that isn’t a shot at IDT. They perfectly blend meat hook breakdowns and horrifying gunfire with a sing-a-long chorus that your girlfriend might even want to sing along with.

The other track that made me take notice is “Martyr Of Truth”.  A finger plucking riff kicks the track off. The track broods for the first minutes till it bubbles over with a release of emotion and riffage.  Jason Wood vomits with the vigor of an exorcism. What I liked is this song isn’t for kids with ADD, the track breathes with some melodic interludes, while the guitars sort of transition the song parts and weave them together perfectly. Listen to the track for what it is and give Jason the props he is due!

Changing singers is always a risky proposition. I had a conversation the other day about lead singers. The result- when a lead singer leaves a band, it is a different band! What would Pantera have been without Phil Anselmo? But in the case of It Dies Today, the journey has been worth it for them. Jason Wood makes “Lividity” an interesting, relevant and progressive listen. Fans of IDT can’t ask for anything more than that!

So I moved back to Baaahston a few weeks ago. It feels great to be back in my hometown and out of the cultural backwater where I spent the better part of the last four years. At some point on my B-Line journey toward the House of Avalon Blues this year to catch Down and The Melvins, my first Boston show this year, I had an epiphany: I am fucking drunk and public transportation is amazing. Yessir, the benefits of city living.

It turned out that there were at least two dudes in the building without a Boston show under their belt in some time: myself, and Sir Philip Anselmo. He’s been stuck playing way out in Worcester since his Pantera days, and seemed rather chuffed to be back in The Bean. I don’t know if last night was a typical Down show—I’ve only ever seen Phil once, back in his arm-spiking days with Superjoint Ritual—but it was like a party in there. Everybody onstage and in the crowd, including the obvious Melvins fans, seemed to be having a great time during their set.

The end of the set was kinda like this, only without Brent from Mastodon dropping in to say hi.

It was a bummer that Rex Brown was absent, off recovering from some pretty serious surgery, and Down III was under-represented in my opinion (though “The Path” was  And c’mon, you can’t “Ghosts Along The Mississippi,” “New Orleans is a Dying Whore,” “Hail the Leaf,” and “Stone the Crow”? They have at least a dozen anthemic, they-gotta-play-that-one-dude songs. A bunch of grey-haired geezers (who must have been Down’s crew) took over the instruments at the end of “Bury Me In Smoke” and jammed out for a good five minutes while the band bandied about onstage, shaking hands with the front row and being all southern and shit. Just awesome.

I’d never heard the Melvins before last night, and I’m embarassed by that fact now. I know that a bunch of my favorite modern metal bands cite them as a primary influence (Mastodon comes to mind immediately). The vocal harmonies and percussive approach reminded me very much of the upcoming Baroness record (which I am fucking stoked on, BTW), so I really need to check some of this stuff out. Any suggestions for a good starting point?

Unfortunately, we missed Weedeater and that other opener—my buddies and I had to do some serious pre-gaming at my apartment up the road, because we sure as shit weren’t going pay $6.25 per beer at the venue all night. You win some, you lose some, and you let the subway driver shuttle your drunk ass home.

..Visto che il clima si è autunnalizzato (adoro i neologismi!), direi che è giunta l’ora di fare un riassunto di quest’estate pregna di eventi..ma soprattutto di sfiga!

Eh sì, perché contro ogni previsione due dei gruppi della santa trinità sono giunti in Europa insieme nello stesso tour, e io non li ho potuti vedere! È la prima volta che non vedo gli AFI non appena abbiano toccato suolo europeo più o meno da quando esistono, per cui la cosa mi fa parecchio soffrire. Non aggiungo altro, altrimenti mi torna il tic all’occhio (“no mamma non sono stata io a prendere a testate il muro!!!“).

Ma non è finita qui. Sono giunti anche i Rise Against che purtroppo non ho mai visto live. DAMN. Come se non bastasse, i festival ai quali hanno suonato queste due band si tenevano in Germania e UK, Paesi che adoro…e insieme a loro hanno suonato Die Toten Hosen e Apocalyptica e Faith No More.

Devo aggiungere altro? No. Ecco. Appunto.

Ma le bruttecose non sono finite qui: ai primi di agosto ho perso il festival dei festival, l’evento degli eventi, il tripudio dei tripudi: il Wacken Open Air. Praticamente una settimana di metal, birra, metal, metal, campeggio, metallari tedeschi, clima nord-europeo…insomma il Valhalla sceso in Terra! (No, non il paradiso..il Valhalla è meglio perché è come una gigantesca ed eterna Oktober Fest).

Bene. Fantastico. È finita ora la dose di sfiga?

Come avete letto nel mio post precedente, è giunta la notizia anche da Dio Trent Reznor che quello di quest’estate sarebbe stato l’ultimo tour dei Nine Inch Nails…per sempre. O almeno per tanto ma tanto ma tanto tempo. Questa notizia mi ha completamente lasciata allibita e sperduta. Uno dei miei punti di riferimento sonori, una delle mie (poche) ferree certezze vitali si è sgretolata, è scoppiata come una bolla di sapone (ok scusate la metafora del cavolo, ma sono sconvolta, non pretendiamo troppo!). Niente più NIN. Il mio cervello semplicemente non lo vuole accettare.

Tutto questo ha contribuito ad amplificare le mie già massicce manie ossessivo-compulsive. Quindi se mi vedete in giro e vi sembro una maniaca, sapete perché. E non è colpa mia.

Però bisogna dire che sono successe anche alcune cose belle.

La prima cosa bella è una derivata diretta della triste novella dataci da Dio Trent Reznor: infatti sapendo che non avrei più potuto vederli, mi sono precipitata a uno degli ultimi concerti in terra italica. Ma di questo potete leggere nel post precedente. Il concerto in questione è stato seguito da un week end che ha messo a durissima prova il mio self control, nonché i miei (pochi) neuroni rimasti: la due giorni del Gods Of Metal.

Quest’anno il festival metalloso si è tenuto in quel di Monza, location storica che ci ha evitato: a)l’inferno dell’Arena Parco Nord di Bologna degli scorsi anni e b)il forno crematorio del Palasharp di Milano dell’edizione 2003 – alla quale io sono eroicamente sopravvissuta (inchinatevi).

Innanzitutto, diciamo che il neurone è stato pesantemente minacciato dalla presenza di uno dei miei idoli assoluti..sì, proprio lui, il Nikki Sixx in persona! Per sfiga non sono riuscita a guadagnarmi la prima fila per il concerto dei suoi Mötley Crüe, quindi l’ho visto solo da una ventina di metri – e forse è stato meglio così. Il concerto oggettivamente è stato mediocre, visto che Vince Neil ormai è un po’ un chiattone (sempre con rispetto parlando), ma Nikki è Nikki e i Mötley spaccano sempre e comunque. Cerco ora di non soffermarmi a considerazioni su Nikki, più che altro perché non voglio che mi censurino il blog. E per chi si chiedeva se era vero che avrebbero suonato tutto “Dr. Feelgood” sul palco del Crüefest europeo dico che..è vero!  Ecco un’immagine a titolo illustrativo del mio neurone dopo aver visto Nikki Sixx dal vivo:

In quest’occasione ho avuto inoltre il piacere di vedere uno degli dèi dell’olimpo metallico, ovvero un Ronnie James Dio più in forma che mai, una Lita Ford meravigliosa e dei fantastici Tesla. Come a confermare che ormai la buona musica arriva quasi esclusivamente dalle vecchie leve. Mi sono persa il set dei Backyard Babies al pomeriggio…ma pace, perchè nonostante mi piacciano davvero un sacco odio Dregen con tutte le mie forze quindi il non vederlo non è stato assolutamente un problema – anzi.

Seconda giornata del Gods decisamente più extreme. Iniziamo la giornata a suon di brutal grazie allo stereo del vicino di tenda, e dopo un meraviglioso (-.-) viaggio in bus fino al Brianteo facciamo colazione guardandoci lo show di Black Dahlia Murder e Napalm Death…meglio di così! I Saxon si perdono nell’ iperspazio, mi sento Tarja dagli spalti per il troppo sole (la adoro sempre, ma senza Tuomas Holopainen non è la stessa cosa), e mi godo il meraviglioso set dei Down di Phil Anselmo: non li avevo mai visti live ma spero di rivederli presto. La classe non è acqua. Tra l’altro, mentre aspettavamo lo show degli Slipknot, il batterista dei Down (Jimmi Bower) si è avvicinato alla transenna per firmare alcuni autografi e fare foto e *udite udite* mi ha addirittura baciato la mano…it’s love! Peccato lui abiti dall’altra parte del mondo…altrimenti…………

Subito dopo scendo in prima fila per il set degli immensi Blind Guardian, che propongono alcune delle loro chicche (immancabile “Nightfall”, meravigliosa “Imaginations from the Other Side” e sempre commovente “The Bard’s Song” cantata da tutti i presenti a squarciagola) insieme a  qualche canzone nuova che purtroppo non conosco. Non importa, l’esaltazione è grande sebbene il vedere Hansi Kürsch con i capelli cosrti abbia irrimediabimente sconvolto la mia esistenza quasi quanto l’usufruire dei bagni pubblici del Brianteo. Cena sbrigativa e molto, molto frugale sul prato ascoltando i mitici Carcass e poi via a corsa ad accaparrarsi la santa transenna per lo show degli Slipknot.

Nell’attesa dobbiamo subirci i Dream Theater, che nonostante l’innegabile superiorità tecnica rispetto ai comuni mortali sono di una noia insostenibile..io infatti collasso a terra tramortita dopo soli 10 minuti (che per i DT equivalgono all’intro di una canzone). Ma l’attesa paga e lo show dei nove di Des Moines non tradisce le aspettative: come sempre potentissimi, tecnicamente immensi e capaci di uno show degno di tale nome fatto di ottima musica, teatralità e carica emotiva. Il Brianteo è lì lì per esplodere quando Corey Taylor intona “People=Shit”, “Wait and Bleed” e la meravigliosa “Psychosocial”. Non sono mancati i momenti tradizionali che tutti i fans della band conoscono perfettamente ed ecco tutti i presenti sedersi a terra a metà di “Spit it out” per poi esplodere in un salto collettivo da far tremare la terra al segnale di Corey (“JUMPDAFUCKUP!!!”). Non è mancato nemmeno il momento di gloria del nostro amato Joey Jordison, con la solita batteria rotante. Le mie costole portano ancora i segni del tripudio, ma -damn- ne è valsa la pena!

I ricordi del Gods sono sempre bellissimi, dai viaggi isterici in bus da e per il campeggio, al tizio collassato in mezzo al prato sotto il sole del pomeriggio del sabato e per il quale tutta la gradinata faceva il tifo..fino al balletto improvvisato sulle note di Michael Jackson da parte di tutti i metalheads presenti a fine festival..e questo basta quasi a perdonare la Live per i soliti abomini (come ad esempio il fatto che l’acqua è finita alle 14 della domenica pomeriggio lasciando ai presenti la scelta tra il morire di sete e ubriacarsi di birra e superalcolici). Perché diciamolo, nonostante tutti i veterani da festival metal snobbino a parole il Gods ogni santo anno, alla fine è arduo rinunciare a partecipare. E divertirsi.

Bene, dopo questo brevissssssimo recap del festival, rimangono un paio di altre ilari cosette da raccontare.

Innanzitutto i sopracitati AFI si sono finalmente decisi a fissare la data d’uscita del prossimo album, “Crashlove” (sì, questo titolo mi mette un terrore immenso -.-), per il 29 settembre. È un peccato che non abbiano sfruttato la data del 9.9.09 che avrebbe fatto coppia perfetta con “Decemberunderground”, uscito il 6.6.06. E va beh. Almeno stavolta la data d’uscita sembrerebbe ufficiale, e non un delirio mentale (leggi: presa per il c***) di Jade. Questo è confermato dal fatto che il primo singolo, “Medicate”, è già acquistabile presso iTunes e quindi la data d’uscita non può essere troppo lontana. Singolo per altro veramente molto bello: non posso essere oggettiva parlando degli AFI per tutta una serie di motivi, quindi eviterò la recensione tendenziosa e mi limiterò a dire che lo trovo uno dei migliori singoli che abbiano mai scritto, molto meglio sicuramente di “Miss Murder”. Come sempre riescono a stupirmi, e l’hanno fatto ancora di più con la pubblicazione di un’altra canzone previously unreleased disponibile per il download gratis dal sito ufficiale, “Fainting Spells”. Non ho parole per descrivere questa canzone, il sound è subito riconoscibile ma è totalmente originale e la amo già dopo pochissimi ascolti..e poi il modo di scrivere di Davey è sempre stupefacente: come al solito si conferma, a mio parere, uno dei migliori lyricist in circolazione. Bentornati AFI!

Bene, penso che le cose importanti siano su per giù queste. E se siete arrivati a leggere questa frase vi faccio i miei complimenti – siete degli impavidi!

Amatorów tych rozrywek wśród gwiazd rocka nie brakuje i co gorsza każdy twierdzi, że w danej kategorii nie ma sobie równych. Bo to przecież takie fajne i relaksujące zajęcia. Są jednak muzycy, którzy zasłużyli sobie na żółte koszulki liderów. Pierwsze miejsce przypada Ozzy’emu Osbourne’owi (na wypadek, gdyby młodsi czytelnicy naśmiewali się z jego otumanienia w reality show, służę pomocą w wyjaśnieniu takiego stanu rzeczy) za wciągnięcie nosem… rodzinki mrówek. O tym niezwykłym wydarzeniu opowiedzieli w dokumencie “Behind The Music” muzycy Motley Crue, którzy do świętych nigdy się nie zaliczali. Sygnałów, że powinni przystopować było co nie miara. Najpierw kompletnie narąbany (alkoholem i dragami) Vince Neil spowodował poważny wypadek samochodowy, a potem Nikki Sixx widział swoje ciało leżące na śmietniku, podczas gdy jego dusza zaczęła ulatywać do nieba. We wspomnianym filmie takich historyjek znajdziecie co nie miara, ale jeżeli cofniemy się trochę w czasie do lat 60. i 70., szybko zobaczymy, że podobnych zawodników było znacznie więcej.

Lata 90. to w pewnym sensie okres opamiętania po tamtych szaleństwach. Względnego opamiętania, bo w zalewie rockmanów z problemami emocjonalnymi i podpalających trawkę raperów znalazło się też miejsce dla prawdziwych kaskaderów z Południa. Mowa o Panterze, ponoć najostrzej imprezującej grupie metalowej w historii tej muzyki. Jeżeli jesteście ciekawi, co takiego wyprawiali i ile byli w stanie połknąć/wciągnąć/wessać (niepotrzebne skreślić), zapraszam do obejrzenia DVD “3 Vulgar Videos from Hell“. Jakie to przyniosło efekty, widać po Philu Anselmo m.in. w dodatkach do DVD Superjoint Ritual “Live at CBGB’s”. Więcej wokalista supergrupy Down opowiedział… podczas spotkania na uniwerku (czyżby jezuickim?) w Nowym Orleanie. Warto to obejrzeć.

W międzywakacyjnym ferworze trochę odpuściłem z nowościami, katując się sprawdzonym rock’n'rollem ze Szwecji i kilkoma archeologicznymi odkryciami. Dyskusja na blogu Bartka sprawiła, że odkurzyłem nagrania Main, a debiut Greymachine stał się impulsem do wycieczki po dyskografii Godflesh (również od dłuższego czasu pokrytej kurzem). Niebawem na Onecie duży tekst o kontrowersyjnych klipach, choć nie mogę sobie podarować, że nie zmieścił się “It’s Coming Down” Danzig. Niemniej jednak zapraszam do lektury i tradycyjnego rzucania błotem w autora

Prefer latura artistica a lui Anselmo. Ca vocal, jos clopu’! Merge si situatia lui de chitarist la ARSON ANTHEM, o trupa care, totusi, nu suna extraordinar.

Depending on which timezone you’re in, it’s Dimebag Darrell’s birthday right now. And goddamn do we miss the crazy son of a gun.

Much has been written and spoken about the legacy of the man who arguably founded the genre of groove metal (if you can call it that, which I certainly don’t. To me, it was undefinable beyond the word ‘metal’). Less has been said about his life off the stage, particularly his hard drinking ways. Which is why it was extremely interesting to watch Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo talk frankly about his own addictions, and an affinity for alcohol that was undoubtedly a problem for the whole band.

“Don’t you even imagine this ain’t true, and if you do, you’d better wake up and apologize — we were the hardest-drinking band on the planet. Hands down. And I’ll tell you what: If Dimebag were alive today, he’d be in some severe medical difficulty, because Rex, the bass player — my bass player — drank himself so stupid, he’s got pancreatitis now. He’s 42 years old. 42 years old and pancreatitis…. You know what that means? That means if he takes a sip of a wine cooler, he has no idea if it’s going to kill him or not. Kill him. And at one point, yeah, he was acting just like a junkie. Hiding bottles. Hiding, hiding, hiding”

Not quite what you heard on Behind The Music, is it?

The man (and I mean Dime here) was undeniably a genius. But I think enough time has passed for us to recognise he probably had a problem. The inventor of the Black Tooth Grin loved his booze. Close friend Zakk Wylde has often spoken about how Dime often needed a few cocktails just to get up on stage and play – a classic sign of addiction.

I love Dime, I just wish people would talk more about the consequences of the lifestyle that he, and Pantera, glorified. That is why I give kudos to Anselmo for coming out and speaking openly. Which is not to say Anselmo is an angel – the man has overdosed on heroin multiple times, and he had to be resuscitated after his heart stopped beating because of an OD once. But at least he realised he had a problem, eventually, and cleaned up his act.

On the other hand, Dime never got that chance.

Lifestyle issues aside, do take a minute aside today to say a prayer for Dime, even if you weren’t a fan of his music. No artist deserves to be shot to death on stage by a deranged fan, much less one who was one of the best guitarists to grace his genre (and grace is the right word. It was an honour to have had him as one of ours). Tunes like Cowboys From Hell, Mouth For War, 5 Minutes Alone, Drag The Waters and Yesterday Don’t Mean Shit sound as fresh today as they did on the day they were written, all held together by the fingers of Dime, flying across the fretboard like iron butterflies.

And do you know why we all still miss him today? Because he was a bloody good person. There have been and will be hundreds of gifted musicians, but you wouldn’t want to go anywhere near them, lest they make you want to commit suicide, just to get away from their ego. Dime was always a fun-loving, affable character who made everyone feel like his best friend, in an industry which has very few people like that. It may be a cliche, but with him it really was that simple.

There truly won’t ever be another like him. Happy birthday Dime, have a shot on me.

En días recientes andaba de ocioso en casa y me puse a revisar unos dvds viejos que tengo por ahí, y caí en los región 1 que por falta de un reproductor adecuado no había podido ver en un rato, ahora que ya está el dispositivo listo me puse a ver los home videos de Pantera y recordé, al ver esas imágenes desmadrosisimas de los texanos, lo buen disco que es este The Great Southern Trendkill.

La historia va más o menos así: corría 1998, Pantera se había presentado un año antes por primera vez en la Ciudad de México (el día de mi cumpleaños para ser exactos en el concierto de Kiss) y eso me tenía ensimismado, no es que fuera un novel con Pantera, los escucho desde el Vulgar Display of Power, allá por 1993, pero el poder que mostraron en esa ocasión, aunque fue muy poco tiempo, nos dejaba a todos los metaleros con ganas de más… y así sucedió.

Creo que fue por junio o julio de 1998 cuando se realizaba el concierto, una especie de mini festival con Makina (México), los poderosísimos Anthrax y Pantera de headliners, El Palacio de los Deportes iba a ser el escenario de esa carnicería metalera y obviamente la banda ya estabamos apuntadísimos.

Al llegar el día de la tocada nos habló a mí y al Chivo (mi broder) una chava de la universidad, que después de decirnos locos, satánicos y orates entre muchas otras linduras, también nos dijo que tenía dos boletos de pista, que si los queríamos fueramos por ellos… esto a dos horas que empezara el concierto y los que recuerden, ese día llovió con madre, por lo que trasladarse desde Tlalpan sur hasta Iztacalco en menos de dos horas en el DF era una misión imposible… y lo fue.

Perdimos parte de la actuación de Makina pero recuperamos la de Anthrax, que por cierto no mamen! qué tocada de esos neoyorkinos, destrozaron posers y no posers, buenísimos la verdad. Y llegó el momento de la verdad: Pantera aún promocionaba TGSTk por lo que de repente, enmedio de la penumbra del recinto, el sudor de toda la banda que ya se había rajado la madre con ídem en las actuaciones de Anthrax y Makina, se dejó caer una grandísima manta con el esqueleto de una serpiente de cascabel enorme, señal que los texanos comandados por Phil Anselmo y Dimebag Darrell estaban por tomar el escenario.

Lo que siguió durante dos horas y media fue apoteósico: la verdad es que Anselmo es de los frontmans más cabrones que he escuchado en mi vida (y eso que he visto a un buen), qué pedo con ese wey, el poder de sus pulmones, la actitud completamente anarquista, un look dejando atrás lo pelonchas y muy agresivo, enmarcando perfectamente la música de este cuarteto que fungió durante gran parte de la década de los 90 como los salvadores del metal a nivel mundial.

Dimebag Darrell era otro pedo de guitarrista (maldita sea la hora en que lo mataron chindada madre!): excelente en la técnica del plumilleo extremo, los armónicos y los solos alucinantes y que reventaban oídos en cada nota, una distorisón capaz de cimbrar los huesos del más duro de los headbangers de México y sobre todo una amalgama perfectamente completada por el poder en la batería de Vinnie Paul y el soporte sonoro de toque de Rex Brown en el bajo.

Pantera desfiló entre los temas clásicos de su discografía con Anselmo y creo que hsta se rifaron un cover de Kiss (creo que fue Cold Gin, sin embargo si alguien se acuerda póngalo en los comentarios, chido!), de este TGSTk se rifaron War Nerve, Sandblasted Skin, Floods, Suicide Note pt. 2, Drag The Waters y creo que 13 Steps To Nowhere… igualitas en poder y la reacción de la gente no fue menor, definitivamente ese día entendí lo que es el ESLAM en toda su capacidad desmadradora y que casi casi había que entrenar para meterse a los chingazos cuando los grandes tocan (no tanto, pero si se puso de bien cabrón).

La versión en estudio de esos temas es por igual excelente, acá en el disco hay agresión, letras potentes, vocalizaciones extremadamente gruesas y violentas por parte de Anselmo, la distorsión de Darrell sonaba sucia, fuerte y directita a la cabeza y la base rítmica limpia, poderosa con dobles bombos machacantes… en fin, este es un gran gran disco, posiblemente el último gran disco de Pantera y de la década de los 90 en cuanto a power, groove y algo de thrash metal se refiere.

Seguramente todos hemos asistido a un concierto o evento en el que necesariamente nuestras cuerdas vocales y gargantas quedaron desgarradas con el griterío que tuvimos que realizar para poder expresar nuestra fuckin emoción. Todos alzamos la voz muchas voces y sacamos al mundo nuestros más horribles gritos en donde más de dos oídos quedan jodidos al escucharnos jajaja, es por eso que considero que el saber gruñir y gritar puede convertirse en una profesión, que al igual que cualquier otra profesión debe de ser desarrollada con mucha galleta y con ganas de que las cosas salgan bien.

Dentro de las millones de profesiones y trabajos que un ser humano puede realizar mencionaré una de las más chidas y emocionantes, en mi opinión: Ser miembro de una banda de rock o de metal…desde ser el guitarrista principal, bajista, baterista, tecladista ó en su caso ser el vocalista. Debo decir con toda honestidad que les tengo un profundo respeto a los vocalistas de metal, algunos con sus voces tan agudas que pareciera que les están apretando los testículos para alcanzar notas tan altas u otros con voces tan graves y guturales que parece que el chivo en carne y hueso te está hablado desde las cavernas del mero infierno; y es precisamente esta entrada la que quiero dedicar a los vocalistas gritones que AMO escuchar para destrozarme los tímpanos. Seguro olvidé algunos por ahí, pero de mientras estos son los que más comúnmente escucho y que sin duda les diría: Grítame pero no me dejes!!  Jajaja

Tommy Vext

Tommy Vext: Este joven, Ex – vocalista de una de mis nuevas bandas consentidas: Divine Heresy. Tommy Vext es un osote de peluche jaja, un tipo de gran tamaño, pero que tiene una de las caras más tiernas que he visto en un vocalista metalero jaja…ahora hablando de su trabajo como vocal, me limito a decir que este joven puede conseguir trabajo rápidamente en cualquier banda metalera que se le aparezca frente a las narices. Su voz en definitiva puede ser del gusto de cualquiera, ya que cuando la utiliza para cantar (en la más fiel definición de la palabra) podemos disfrutar de una voz cristalina y entonada que no deja de ser poderosa y tener un estilo propio, mientras que por otro lado sus gritos al estilo death metal pueden llegar a asustar a mamas, hermanitas y abuelitas  que da gusto. Todo esto combinado con algunos chillidos de niña diabólica con faringitis hacen del primer disco de Divine Heresy un disco para disfrutar a gran volumen.

Randy Blythe!!

Randy Blythe: El vocalista borracho rudo y buenote que muchas bandas quisieran tener tan siquiera de artista invitado. Vocalista de otra de mis favoritas: Lamb Of God…este amigo de 29 años es descrito por wikipedia como: un tipo con voz de gruñidos, gritos y barítono…yo solo puedo decir que Randy es la mera onda!!, un vocal que causa orgamos cuando escuchas canciones como “Ruin” ó “Walk With Me In Hell”. Su voz profunda y gruesa nos deleita con gritos agudos que cambian sorpresivamente a una voz gutural y rasposa, tan rasposa como imaginarte una lija haciendo su trabajo en tus oídos…”Voz de teporocho” como diría mi mamá que llena de agresividad y sonido machote al resto del sonido logrado por sus compañeros. Randy es sin duda la cereza del pastel que hace de la música de Lamb of God un platillo apetecible para los amantes del ruido y la distorsión. Además de que lo escuché cantar en un video blog de “Overkil” y debo decir que su voz suena bastante parecida a Danzig al cual también adoro escuchar cantar. El último trabajo de Los Corderos de Dios llamado “Wrath” es en definitiva un material que goza con un excelente trabajo por parte de Randy, quien utiliza su mejor instrumento para darle variados gritos y gruñidos que logran mantenerte tan entretenido como ir a ver una película de Scary Movie jaja. Abajo les dejo la canción de “Fake Messiah” que es una de mis favoritas para escuchar al poderoso Randy en acción.

El señor Anselmo

Phil  Anselmo: Este señor no necesita introducción…Vocal de la banda de metal más influyente y poderosa de la década de los 90´s. Mientras yo estaba ocupada sacándome los mocos y asistiendo al kínder, Anselmo estaba ocupado destrozando al “grunge” a lado de Dimebag Darrel y compañía. En mi más profunda ignorancia me atrevo a decir que no hay canción alguna que el señor Anselmo no pueda cantar y cantar bien!!, sólo hay que escuchar 3 o 4 canciones de Pantera para darnos cuenta de los variados estilos que su voz pueda lograr interpretar. Al igual que Tommy Vext, Anselmo cuenta con una voz que puede ser utilizada en una banda de rock con necesidad de un vocal que sea dueño de una voz entonada, poderosa, rockera y que no desafinará ninguna nota y que al mismo tiempo puede lograr vivir del metal más extremo sin ninguna complicación, porque sus “screams” nos dejan siempre pidiendo más. Cuenta con también con algunos chillidos bastante potentes e interesantes que sólo me permiten decir que como Pantera sólo habrá una y para que encontremos a una voz tan buena como la de Phil va a pasar un buen rato.

Johan Hegg

Johan Hegg: Desde Suecia nos llega un vikingo metalero, que nos viene relatando historias de tierras escandinavas  desde hace ya un tiempo. Según wikipedia este señor tiene como influencia a cantantes como James Hetfield, Tom Araya, Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy Kilmister y Bon Scott…estilos bastante variados debo decir. Johan además de imponer con su físico y su barbota infunde respeto cada vez que tienes la oportunidad de escucharlo utilizar esas cuerdas vocales. Sus voz es característica del estilo death metal y hasta ahora no lo he escuchado con otro estilo que no sea este y al igual que Randy cuenta con una voz gruesa y profunda que logra sonidos guturales que logra ponerte a viajar imaginando las luchas de los adoradores del dios Thor. Yo en lo particular disfruto mucho de su voz, pero tengo que decir que muchas veces puede llegar a ser plana lo cual lleva a la monotonía, haciendo que muchas de las canciones de Amon Amarth suenen a lo mismo. Aun así, amo a este señor y si así cantaban los vikingos, debió haber sido todo un pinche espectáculo verlos en vivo y en directo!!

Dani El Sucio

Dani Filth: Frontman de la banda amada-odiada inglesa de “Cradle Of Filth” y que debo decir que su voz me sigue dejando con la boca abierta y los oídos lastimados en algunas ocasiones jaja…Mi compadre Dani es poseedor de una voz biiien pinche rara que varía como los humores de una joven en sus días. En algunas ocasiones podemos escuchar voces susurrantes que van aumentando hasta convertirse en una voz gutural rabiosa que sale de las más sucias entrañas de su dueño. En otros momentos escuchamos gritos de gato en celo que te dejan con una pregunta en la cabeza: ¿qué pedo con esa voz?…en alguna parte leí que Dani ha sido sometido a numerosas operaciones debido a que muchas veces ha terminado con la voz y garganta lastimadas. No sé si lo anterior sea verdad, pero lo creería con facilidad después de escucharme todo un disco de Cradle y que después de ya varios años de venir escuchando a este muchachón su voz me sigue emocionando. Y esos son todos los gritones profesionales, los “cheerladers” de las bandas metaleras que más me gustan y que puedo recordar por el momento. Sí alguien que lea la entrada conoce a alguno bueno que me role el nombre de la banda en un comentario para que lo cheque jajaja.

I just want to put this out there Dimebag is my favorite guitar play of all time, and was a good  man. However many people claim Phil Anselmo the reason of Dimebag’s death, which is beyond the point of stupid. Phil may have been a dick, but is IN NO WAY the reason why Dime got killed.

Let’s look at the facts:

• Nutty ex-marine Nathan Gale, off his meds convinces himself that he wrote all of Pantera’s material decides to kill the Darrell and Vinnie Abbott , because they were the reason Pantera broke up…? That makes no sense what so ever.
• Terrible hired security at venue, RIP Mayhem, he did his job to the best of his ability. However he was un-armed. The guys Mayhem hired obviously DID NOT perform to the best of their ability.
• Crappy small venue

So here is the technical part, is security the reason Dimebag Darrell is dead, but once again Mayhem at least tried to take down Nathan Gale.

That’s all fine and dandy but here are the reasons why Phil could be partly to blame.

• Wanted to screw around with other side projects that went… NO WHERE.
• Drugs and Alcohol  had a major influence on his thought process.
• Didn’t want to get back together with Pantera after the time off after 9/11.

After putting those issues out there, there is one big problem. Pantera had and wanted to again play that small venue. Here’s the thing though, Nathan Gale wouldn’t had been there after the 9/11 break he was serving in the Marines, he got discharged during 2003.

Now looking at Pantera’s album release schedule Pantera probably either should have been writing a new album around the same Nathan Gale got discharged. Which Vinne and Dime did, Damageplan.  However some how… they could have went on tour with a bigger band and not have went to that venue, with Pantera.

So I can see where people are coming from with Phil being responsible, but Phil is just a man. He was in no way in control of Dime’s future, this looks like fate.

The biggest problem I have issue is the metal news media. They dicked around and basically started the Pantera war. Really just go look at the articles involving the breakup. They gave false statements from members just like in Mr. Deeds, F**king childish bastards just looking to get more attention.

I miss Dimebag, I miss Pantera being together, and I always will. I just feel sorry for Phil, he never got the proper closure. Sure his douchery kinda got him into the situation, but he’s never gotten over it and it’s very obvious just go and look at any interview since the murder.

I’ll leave y’all with Phil’s statement about the murder and Dime and Phil together, and for me Phil’s Statement is very hard to watch I’ve always known Phil to be one tough mother f’er and to see him break down like that…. you know he loved Dime.

Phil has had a hard life, he doesn’t need a responsibility for murder to haunt him.

Southern Rock yapan grup Phil ve Opal’in 2004′te ayrılmasının ardından dağılmıştır. Malesef sadece 1 EP çıkarabilmiş olmaları gerçekten üzücü çünkü EP’de ki şarkıların hepsi birbirinden güzel ama “Southern Man I Am” de Phil ile Opal’in yapmış olduğu düet gerçekten mükemmel. Ne tarz müzik dinlerseniz dinleyin bu özel ve fazla bilinmeyen projenin kayıtlarını mutlaka dinlemenizi öneriyorum.

1- NAPALM DEATH

Sempre i migliori, gli unici in tutto sto cazzo di festival a non atteggiarsi a rockstar, dritti al punto come sempre, hanno creato il panico e il piu grande pogo di tutt’e due i giorni, suonando all’ora di pranzo e con dei suoni per niente adatti.

2- HEAVEN & HELL

Gran parte dell’esperienza che volevo fare a questo gods consisteva nel vedere dal vivo Tony Iommi e Geezer Butler. Ne è valsa la pena sicuramente. Ronnie James Dio si è dimostrato non solo il miglior cantante del festival (e ce n’erano veramenti tanti di cantanti tecnici e “impostati”) ma probabilmente il miglior cantante heavy metal vivente, uno che nonostante sia alto 1,45 m e pesi 42 kg e abbia 68 anni fa il culo a chiunque, dico a chiunque (anche a Bruce Dickinson)

Grande la versione allungata (sarà durata almeno un quarto d’ora) di Heaven and hell con tanto di fuochi e spruzzi di vapore a tempo e a sorpresa

3- BACKYARD BABIES

Per me erano un ricordo d’adolescenza (a 16 anni avevo consumato “Making enemies is good”) e anche se di quell’album hanno suonato solo 1 pezzo mi sono piaciuti parecchio,  attitudine rock&roll spensierata e quasi del tutto genuina, hanno tenuto il palco come se fosse casa loro, noncuranti del sole di mezzogiorno.

4- CYNIC

Ecco cosa si intende per musica innovativa, originale e mai banale. Non li avevo mai apprezzati troppo perchè troppo intricati e poco “stremi” pei miei gusti, invece mi hanno piacevolmente stupito..molto emotivi, un buonissimo concerto post-colazione

5- DOWN

Erano il gruppo che aspettavo di più, e nonstante mi sia divertito molto, ne sono uscito un pò deluso..perchè Phil Anselmo sulle parti melodiche era spompato, perchè hanno suonato solo pezzi vecchi e quasi niente dall’ultimo “Over the under”

6-MASTODON

Discorso simile ai Down, ma al contrario. Avevo grandi aspettative su di loro, ma hanno deciso (da veri artisti devo ammettere, e in controtendenza con qualunque gruppo da festival) di suonare quasi esclusivamente materiale nuovo, presentando l’abum da poco uscito, che è si bello, ma eccessivamente psichedelico e debitore al prog anni ‘70 per adattarsi a una situazione del genere. Come dire, un atteggiamento un pò suicida, perchè se avessero fatto solo qualcuno dei pezzi vecchi, anche da Blood Mountain, robba piu metal diciamo, avrebbero riscosso sicuramente piu successo

7-CARCASS

Hanno avuto un’accoglienza spaventosa per un gruppo che ha fatto la storia della musica estrema e non del metal commerciale, suonando altissimi in scaletta, con scenografia da headliner..ma non mi hanno convinto fino in fondo. Sarà che ci si avviava alla fine del fetsival e tutti eravamo un pò devastati, ma anche il fatto che dei pezzi belli (i primi) di Swansong ne hanno suonato uno solo, che di quelli vecchi (da Necroticism in giù) pochissimi, privilegiando praticamente solo Heartwork e quell’approccio “neo-melodico” che è ben rappresentato da quel coglione di Ammott. Inoltre mi è sembrato che fossero veramente troppo diversi tra di loro e dai Carcass veri, quelli storici, nel senso che sembravano piuttosto il tributo di sè stessi che una band vera  e proprio. E anche se sono contento di tutti i soldi che finalmente stanno facendo, perchè all’epoca sono stati troppo sottovalutati, mi sono sembrati un pò freddi, nel senso che sembravano fuori luogo a fare le rockstar, ormai sono considerabili estremi solo nei confronti dei Dream Theather. E’ più interessante vedere cosa combina Bill Steer con il suo pregetto rock anni 70

note a margine:

i Motley Crue mi hanno spaventato, nel senso che il loro pubblico mi ha spaventato..migliaia di gente con le loro magliette, coi capelli cotonati e cagate simili da glam..proprio tanti! non ne ho mai vista di gente cosi in giro pe la via, almeno a roma..si vede che al nord tutti impazziscono per sto revival sesso-droga-rocknroll-wannabe anni 80..tutte ste tipe piu che stereotipate pronte a fare di tutto per entrare nel backstage a farsi scopare da quei fattoni spompati.

Cmq a parte l’immagine, il gruppo stesso mi ha spaventato per quanto faceva pena, musica moscia, e soprattutto un cantante incapace, co na voce da cartone animato, il peggiore di tutta la giornata “classic-heavy-power-hard-rock-metal”

Con i Dream Theater invece mi sono fatto na bellissima dormita, un viaggio mentale, sono stati veramente rilassanti, sarà che era pure calato il sole e si poteva finalmente avre una tregua dal caldo asfissiante

Buoni i Queensryche, che di sto genere so quelli che mi so piaciuto di piu, musica di qualità finalmente, anche sotto la pioggia

Buoni anche gli Slipknot, nonstante nn li ascoltassi piu da anni e nonstante il fatto che sono una band adolescenziale e rappresentano poco piu di una versione aggiornata e piu estrema dei Kiss, nel senso che il loro spettacolo è come andare al circo, ma almeno loro hanno personalità e verranno ricordati per aver fatto qualcosa di diverso, anche se le cose piu nu-metal a distanza di dieci anni si sente che non hanno lasciato il segno, troppo legate alla moda di quel periodo

La nota negativa per eccellenza va all’organizzazione, il trionfo dello sfruttamento e dello schifo

ce ne sarebbero da dire tante, ma concludo semplicemente:

mi hanno definitivamente convinto che, semmai tornerò ad un festival estivo, sarà fuori dall’Italia

Ieri é stata una domenica di fuoco.In tutti i sensi.Caldo devastante già la mattina presto.E,se non bastava quello,dai due palchi del Gods sono piovuti riff e musica bollenti.

Ma andiamo per ordine.Essendo stata una giornata lunga ed intensa,dividerò le band in gruppi lasciando un commento ed un voto finale comprendente sia la caratura musicale che la presenza scenica.

STATIC-X

A quanto dicono sono i fondatori della disco metal come afferma il frontman dai capelli in piedi Wayne Static.Suonano decentemente e nonostante siano le 11 del mattino nessuno dei presenti di certo si addormenta.Prestazione energica sia dal punto di vista musicale che del comportamento sul palco.

CYNIC

A dispetto del loro aspetto da imprenditori che rimpatriano ogni tanto per suonare i Cynic stupiscono in maniera positiva. Incredibili e perfetti é poco per definirli. Di una precisione letale anche dal vivo eseguono il loro death progressive senza sbagliare un colpo.

Il grind non mi é mai piaciuto ma all’una del pomeriggio sotto un sole allo zenith massimo che rende il Brianteo una fornace a cielo aperto la storica band di Birmingham non si risparmia quanto ad energia.Per i fans accorsi una grande soddisfazione,per altri un break per andare a prendersi da mangiare.

MASTODON

Zero interazione col pubblico ma un muro sonoro devastante. Chiunque si fosse lanciato verso il palco sarebbe stato respinto dalla musica che i 4 statunitensi hanno suonato.Partiti un po’ incerti(così pareva dal prato,ma può darsi anche che i suoni non siano stati dei migliori all’inizio) vanno stabilizzandosi. Non si risparmiano nulla in fatto di sudore.

TARJA

Che Tarja Turunen,ex voce dei Nightwish,sia una gnocca devastante si sa. Ieri nel suo top rosso fiammante questa bellezza spiccava in modo particolare nel caldo della Brianza. Che sia anche una cantante sopra la media come risulta in studio dal vivo proprio non si sente. Accompagnata da tre mostri sacri agli strumenti(Kiko Loureiro alla chitarra,Dough Wimbish dei Living Colour al basso e Mike Terrana alla batteria)che suonano in maniera impeccabile,la finnica si muove tra pezzi del suo nuovo album,due canzoni dei Nightwish ed una cover abominevole di “Poison” di Alice Cooper(Tarja la introduce dicendo:”A molti non piacerà la mia versione…” e te credo).Il pubblico risponde in grande maniera e la cantante se la cava decentemente.

DOWN

Con Phil Anselmo si é sempre sul filo del rasoio.Se é sobrio la performance ottima e godibile é assicurata.Se non lo é,non si vede l’ora che finisca il set. Ieri si é trattato del primo caso. Per fortuna l’ex singer dei Pantera si é dato da fare accanto ai suoi nuovi compagni. Una buona esibizione sotto ogni punto di vista.E alla fine ha voluto anche al suo fianco Fratello Metallo.

BLIND GUARDIAN

Salgono sul palco direttamente dalla terra di mezzo i cinque attesissimi tedeschi.Hansi Kusch ha problemi di voce ma questo é noto a tutti da tempo immemore. Il problema sono i suoni veramente aberranti. Ma la setlist salva il tutto ed il pubblico non fa che cantare,grazie anche al sole che finalmente si é deciso a seguire il corso del tramonto.Un viaggio nella discografia del guardiano cieco che raggiunge il suo apice nella stupenda “Bard’s song” cantata da ognuno dei presenti. Certo che muovere due passi sul palco non nuocerebbe a nessuno. A parte Hansi caricatissimo quello che si muove di più é il batterista…

CARCASS

Si entra nel clou della serata e sul palco salgono gli anatomo-patologi-musicisti Carcass. Prestazione energica,brutale e precisa degna della fama della band. Tra pezzi storici e più recenti il set traghetta il pubblico verso le performance dei due headliner. Il batterista Daniel John Erlansson é un metronomo vivente. Congedandosi,Jeff Walker si rivolge al pubblico dicendo:”Enjoy Slipknot”. Seguiranno i Dream Theater.Frecciata voluta?

DREAM THEATER

Sale sul palco una band che si ama o si odia. Molta gente arriva solo a quest’ora e solo per vedere la progressive metal band più famosa al mondo. Dopo poche note si capisce che come sempre sarà una prestazione impeccabile priva di ogni sbavatura visto che finalmente anche James LaBrie é in formissima dal punto di vista vocale. Anche i suoni sono particolarmente aggressivi e questo non penalizza assolutamente la prestazione dei cinque.

Dopo le iniziali canzoni tratte dagli ultimi lavori viene infilata una serie di classici da urlo:”Erotomania”;”Voices”;”Caught in a web”;”Pull me under”. Chiude il tutto una potentissima ed allungata “Metropolis part.I” che manda in visibilio il pubblico. Degli aficionados e dei non.

SLIPKNOT

Alle 23 precise salgono sul palco i nove pazzi mascherati dell’Iowa. E fanno capire subito da che parti ci si trovi:”(Sic)”,”Wait and bleed” e “Get this!” aprono il lotto ed anche i sensibili orecchi di chi era giunto solo per ascoltare i Dream Theater.

Spettacolo incredibile come al solito,con un set di pezzi ormai diventati dei classici della band. Gli Slipknot sono particolarmente scatenati,si muovono anche sul palco laterale e sono talmente indemoniati che ad un certo punto non si sa più dove guardare. Caricati da un pubblico incredibile(Corey lo ribadirà più di una volta) chiudono con i bis affidati a “Surfacing” e “Spit it out”. Anche Craig Jones,altrimenti chiamato 133 Mhz,con i suoi chiodi in testa,caricato dalla risposta del pubblico si muove dalla sua postazione dietro i sampler.Cosa che avviene davvero raramente. Totalmente devastanti.

Due cose in conclusione: i Saxon arrivano in ritardo per un problema al tour bus e quindi l’organizzazione non li fa suonare. I fasti dei britannici risalenti ad un ventennio fa sono finiti.

Un inaspettato tributo a Michael Jackson invece é arrivato dalla band che nessuno pensava potesse farlo,gli Slipknot .Mentre erano ancora intenti a salutare i fans appena finito il concerto,nelle casse é risuonata a tutto volume “Beat it”.

Visto da chi é fuori il mondo del metal é una cosa strana.Per i fans pronti a recarsi nelle loro case stanchi e sudati é normale amministrazione.

Phil Anselmo – Might be an even bigger dickhead than Jose Mangin, but he was in Pantera.

Matt Pinfield – Just cause I haven’t seen him in like 12 years.

Katy Perry – So I can fantasize about putting my nose in her asshole at some ungodly hour on Friday nights.

Huron were the first of the ‘newly discovered’ bands that I wrote about at the beginning of this year. They are reminiscent of Pantera & unfortunately, as much as I hate to say it, too much like them for me. As much as I like Phil Anselmo-style vocals, I think they are a little overdone on the album. I am the type of person that can listen to harsh vocals & get used to them over time, but after listening through the album a few times, though the music is good, the vocals are still relentless & grating. I would quite like to see them do something a bit different vocally in future, more towards the song ‘Your View From the Sun’ but not necessarily taking the music in a lighter direction. Lead vocalist, Palmer, has a good melodic voice & I think that if he focused more on developing that & combining it with the growls, the tracks could be so much better. I still really like the track ‘Lust of War’ & I’m glad ‘Your View From The Sun’ & ‘Dirt’ were put on the album to break it up a bit. I also think that the second half of the album is much better than the first, which is strange – it’s usually the other way around!

Overall, the album is a bit of a disappointment, especially since I have been really looking forward to hearing Huron’s debut since January. However, I definitely think they have potential & hope they continue to develop their sound & put their own mark on it.

2007_Tornano i rozzissimi rockers de NIU ORLINZS, ed è un ritorno col botto stavolta. Dopo due dischi datati 1997 e 2002 che sembravano soprattutto un bel passatempo di musicisti con impegni ben piu pressanti e remunerativi (ricordiamoci che trovare una all-star band del genere al giorno d’oggi è impossibile). I toni si smorzano, Phil Anselmo ritorna per la prima volta a cantare davvero dai tempi dei primi Pantera, e sulla sua voce ci sarebbe da scrivere libri interi..diciamo solo che gli anni e gli abusi si sentono, il suo timbro ora sembra quello di un Chris Cornell che ha sbattuto la testa per terra e si è crogiolato nel fango in preda a na crisi d’astinenza (splendido..!)

Gli altri mostri coinvolti nel progetto (ormai una band vera e propria,forse la migliore rock-metal band del mondo attualmente insieme ai Mastodon) fanno il resto. Parliamo di gente come Peeper Keenan (Corrosion of Comformity), Kirk Windstein (Crowbar), Rex Brown (Pantera) e Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod)..non so se mi spiego

C’è spazio per molta piu melodia rispetto al passato, meno sludge-hc, piu southern rock e psichedelia, e soprattutto un alone di disfacimento che copre tutto e tutti, che marchia il logo Down sul cuore e non si stacca piu (un anno fa ho iniziato e non riesco a smettere..).

Ma si sente anche la voglia di rialzarsi stavolta, non a caso il tema portante e l’incipit del disco è la devastazione dell’uragano Katrina che ha lasciato un segno indelebile su quella terra e sulla sua gente.

Gli episodi-capolavoro si sprecano, anche se i picchi per me sono quelli in cui il tasso “emozionale” si alza irrimediabilmente e le melodie sono piu curate (“Beneath the Tides” su tutte, ma anche “Nothing in Return (walk away)”).

Grande disco metal in conclusione, con un anima rock che sa di vero vissuto e che fa di “Over the Under” la colonna sonora per giornate piovose, grigie o ultra-soleggiate e afose, e in questa strana primavera torna immancabilmente attuale..(appena cho i soldi mi vado a prende la arrapante versione in vinile)
