http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7mjwq_its-always-sunny-in-philadelphia-he_fun Gay Guy : I t

Gay Guy : I thought you guys were taking me to dinner?

Frank : Come on! Who doesn’t like to watch a naked woman swing around on a pole?

Gay Guy : A gay man for one.

All : Huh?

Gay Guy : I’m gay.

Mac : No! You’re so big and tough. You do not come across as gay.

Frank : You do not look like a gay guy.

Dennis : That’s cause he’s a bear.

Mac : Huh?

Dennis : Yeah he’s a bear. You see some guys are twinks and other guys are bears. This gay guy is a bear, and by the way we’re totally cool with that. To each his own.

Frank : Wait, Wait. I’m a little confused here. What’s a twink?

Dennis : A twink is small and slend like Mac.

Mac : Oh no, I’m too muscular. I would be a bear.

Dennis : I don’t think so, bro. Not hairy enough.

Frank : Yeah. Smooth. Now, I would be a bear.

Dennis : No, see I don’t think you’d be a bear either. In fact, I don’t know what you’d be cause you’re definitely not a twink.

Frank : I’d be a top, that’s for sure.

Dennis : Maybe.

Mac : Can a twink be a top? Or is that reserved for bears?

Dennis : I’m sure there is a great deal of switching back and forth but I think more often than not bears are tops ; unless they happen to be power bottoms.

Frank : What’s a power bottom?

Mac : A power bottom is a bottom who is capable of receiving an enormous amount of power.

Dennis : No, Mac you’ve got it backwards, you see a power bottom is actually generating all the power by doing all the work.

Frank : Does the power have to do with the size of the strength of the bottom?

Mac : Now I’ve heard speed has something to do with it.

Dennis : Speed has everything to do with it. You see, the speed of the bottom informs the top how much pressure he’s supposed to apply. Speed’s the name of the game, right buddy (looks at Gay Guy) ?

The mean temperature has been shown correct to one decimal point in the record whereas figures for 2007 are shown in round figures. So I have rounded off the mean temp. figures too, for proper comparison.

Except in a few cases, there is remarkable similarity in temperature recorded 200 years ago and now ! This exposes the fallacy of global warm-mongers. In big cities like bombay the increase in temp may be due to huge concrete forests constructed and this can in no way be called global.

ANALYSIS OF TEMPERATURE DATA

Figures speak the truth. The temperature data, comparing previous periods with the current period in respect of Indian and foreign cities are available in the statements above. Statement-1 shows temperature of Indian cities (both coastal and inland).

These have been collected from the meteorological department library at Mausam Bhawan, Delhi.

You will see that in the cities mentioned below, the temperature has remained stable during the last 50 years.

Bhuj, Bhawnagar, Surat, Punjim, Honavar, Alapuzha, Kakinada, Port Blair, Vishakhapatnam, Kolkata (temperature has actually decreased by 3 degrees), Bhubneswar (decreased by 3 degrees), Ajmer, Pune, Bangalore, Agartala, Alhabad, Kota, Madurai, Koimbature, Kolhapur, Udaipur, Nagpur.

The increase in temperature by 5 degrees in Mumbai is glaring, especially when we see the temperature in Surat remaining stable. In other words, for Mumbai the reasons my be local and not global. This requires investigation. My guess is that the huge increase in concrete buildings in Mumbai has contributed to the increase in temperature.

So far, I have been speaking about the maximum temperature. A scrutiny of the minimum temperatures reveals a certain trend of distinct increase.

Bhuj, Bhavnagar, Mumbai, Ajmer, Pune, Hyderabad, Udaipur and Kanpur show increase in minimum temperature by 3 degree. If you total the minimum temperatures of all the cities, then and now, there is an increase of 20degrees in respect of 15 inland stations whereas the maximum temperature in respect of the same stations show a decrease of 8 degrees. It should be remembered that the minimum temperature are recorded during winter months (December, January) when the sun is far away in the Southern hemisphere and this cannot be assigned to the heat radiated from the sun. Mr. Milner has also written about the winter becoming milder over a period of time. In my younger days, I use to find it difficult to take bath in cold water in winter in Delhi. Now, excepting some days of severe cold mostly caused by heavy snowfall in the Himalayas, the water is not so cold. The obvious inference is that this is actually global defreezing caused by geothermal energy.

Statement 2 shows temperature variation over a wider period of 200 years. The figures for the previous period have been taken from Milner’s book which was published in 1853. As these figures are in Fahrenheit scale, current figures too are shown in the same scale. The figures in respect of the following stations indicate stability.

Cairo, Algiers, Cincinnati, New York, Beijing (decrease of 3 degree), Paris Dublin, Copenhagen (decrease of 6 degree), Quebec, Petersburg, Bordeaux, Vienna (decrease of 4 degrees) – 12 out of 20 cities. London, Geneva and Paris show exceptional increase. However, it should be remembered that the increase is over a period of 200 years.

A word of caution: the current data have been extracted from the website “World Weather Information Service” and so the authenticity has to be verified independently.

A very reliable and scientific method for evaluation of the temperature of the globe, is latitude wise mean temperatures. Milner’s book shows 29 degree centigrade at equator, gradually and linearly decreasing to zero degree centigrade at the poles. I am unable to get corresponding figures for the current period. However, I could see from the website that figures remain almost constant, even though the figures for the polar region, now shows as approaching minus 20 degree centigrade. This may be due to better technology being employed by scientific team exploring the polar regions. I have calculated the value of current mean temperatures in respect of a few stations, comparing this value with that shown in Milner’s book. These are given in statement 3.

MELTING OF POLAR ICE CAP

The density of water at zero degrees centigrade is 0.9999 grams per cm. The density of ice at zero degree centigrade is 0.9150. In other words, 1 cc of ice weights only 0.91 gm and hence will displace only 0.915cc of water, when the ice is floating in water. When the ice float, almost the whole of body sinks below the surface of water, expect a small portion projecting above the surface. In the North Pole area, there is no land. The crust of the earth forms a huge bowl filled with seawater and a huge mass of ice floating in it just like an ice cube placed in a bowl of water. The volume of ice submerged below the ice may be almost 9 times more than the icecap which we observe above the surface of water. The molecules covering the underwater portion of the icecap absorb heat from the sea water in which it floats and melt into water. This is a continuous process happening round the clock, allover the year, irrespective of summer or winter. As I have explained in my booklet, the necessary energy is supplied by the earth itself. The role of the Sun which shines only for a limited period is too insignificant to have any impact on this process. As the density of water is more than that of ice, the volume of water generated by the melting of ice is less than that of water originally occupied by the ice block in the ratio 9999:9150. Therefore the sea level will actually come down because of the melting process. In practice, this may not happen because of the continuous deposition of snow in the polar region which will continuously push down the ice cap.

A lot has been talked about the rising of sea level because of Global warming. This is a misconception. In some places, the sea level goes up and in other places, it recedes. This phenomenon has been extensively discussed in Milner’s geography.

My contention can be tested by a simple experiment. Place ice cubes in a tumbler and fill it with water until the water overflows. Leave it until all the ice melts. Watch for any overflow of water during this process.

I quote from Milner-page-513

Excessive summers

In 763 the summer was so hot that the springs dried up.

In 870 the heat was so intense ,that near Worms the reapers dropped dead in the fields.

In 993 and again in 994,it was so hot that the corn and fruits were burnt up.

The year 1000 was so hot and dry ,that, in Germany ,the pools of water disappeared ,and the fish ,being left in the mud ,bred pestilence.

In 1022 the heat was so excessive ,that both men and cattle were struck dead.

In 1130 the earth yawned with drought. Springs and rivers disappeared ,and even the Rhine was dried up in Alsace.

In 1159 not a drop of rain fell in Italy after the month of May.

The year 1171 was extremely hot in Germany.

In 1232 the heat was so great ,especially in Germany, that it is said that eggs were roasted in the sands.

In 1260 ,many of the Hungarian soldiers died of excessive heat at the famous battle fought near Buda.

The consecutive years of 1276 and 1277 were so hot and dry as to occasion a great scarcity of fodder.

The years 1293 and 1294 were extremely hot ;and so were likewise 1303 and 1304,both the Rhine and the Danube having dried up.

In 1333 the corn fields and vineyards were burnt up.

The years 1393 and 1394 were excessively hot and dry.

In 1447 the summer was extremely hot.

In the successive years 1473 and 1474 the whole earth seemed on fire. In Hungary , a person might wade across the Danube

The four consecutive years 1538, 1539 ,1540 ,and 1541 were excessively hot ;and the rivers dried up.

In1556 the drought was so great that the springs failed. In England wheat rose from 8 shillings to 53 shillings a quarter.

The years 1615 and 1616 were very dry all over Europe.

In 1646 it was excessively hot.

In1652 the warmth was very great, the summer being the driest ever known in Scotland. A total eclipse had happened that year, on Monday the 24th of March, which hence received the appellation of ‘Mirk Monday.’

The summer of 1679 was extremely hot.It is related ,that one of the minions tyranny ,who in that calamitous period, harassed the poor Presbyterians in Scotland with captious questions, having asked a shepherd in Fife ,whether the killing of a notorious Sharp, Archbishop of St.Andrews, which had happened in May,was murder; he replied , that he could not tell, but there had been fine weather ever since.

The year 1700 was excessively warm, and the two following years were of the same description.

In 1718 the weather was extremely hot and dry all over Europe. The air felt so oppressive that all the theatres were shut in Paris. Scarcely any rain fell for the space of nine months and the springs and rivers were dried up. The following year was equally hot. The thermometer at Paris rose to 98 degree Fahrenheit. The grass and corn were quite parched.

In some places the fruit trees blossomed two and three times.

Both the years 1723 and 1724 were dry and hot.

The year 1745 was remarkably warm and dry; but the following year was still hotter insomuch that the grass withered, and the leaves dropped from the trees .Neither rain nor dew fell for several months ; and ,on the continent, prayers were offered up in all the churches to implore the bounty of refreshing showers.

In 1748 the summer was again very warm.

In 1754 it was likewise extremely warm.

The years 1760 and 1761 were both of them remarkably hot, and so was the year 1763.

In 1774 it was excessively hot and dry.

Both the years 1778 and 1779 were warm and very dry.

The year 1788 was also very hot and dry ;and of the same character was 1811 ,famous for its excellent vintage, and distinguished by the appearance of a brilliant comet.

You MUST obey this system! Once again, my GFS told me to buy 3 points on the Spurs-Sixers game to make it -7.5, and the Spurs won by 8. It’s amazing how many calls I have seen like this.

Unfortunately, the system can’t call them all. I don’t blame it for missing the Timberwolves game as they were 0-12 ATS in their last 12 games, with a differential of -14.7. But lets not dwell on that too much.

I still had a winning record today in NBA. I went 4-1 ATS, 4-1 SU, and 3-2 O/U. Another solid night for professional hoops.

I went 4-3 ATS in the NFL in an up-and-down day. The good news is I went 7-0 straight up on my picks! And as for O/U, I was also 4-3, for a combined 15-6. Some of my teams looked good while other picks were disastrous.

Bret Favre looked like his natural self against a flat Bears team. Favre threw for 392 yards and 3 TDs (surpassing the 500 career TD mark) as Minnesota put up the most offensive yards the Bears have allow since 1982.

The Seahawks also looked strong against their NFC West rival, adding another chapter to their bipolar season. This team is tough to bet on because they’re either winning by 20 or losing by 20, and you never know which way it’s going to be. Apparently, they are mathematically still in contention for a wild card slot, although a lot has to go their way to make it happen. Winning games is definitely a start though.

Falcons lost QB Matt Ryan early in the game, which really hurt them. Once Turner left in the third quarter, any shot at the Falcons covering their spread was lost. These are the games you just gotta take.

Losing Westbrook has been a huge hit to the Eagles, both offensively and defensively. After only allowing 1 team in their first 7 games to score more than 20 points, the Eagles have now let the last 4 teams score at least 20. Losing their running game means more passing and thus less time the offense is on the field. Naturally, that keeps the defense out there longer, making them wear out more easily.

The run proved to be effective against the Browns for Cincinnati. I can’t blame them for abandoning the pass and just grinding out a low scoring game against a terrible offense. One thing to remember whenanalyzing potential plays is newcomers. The addition of Larry Johnson helped keep this a low scoring game, allowing them to pick up first downs run down the clock. I’m not saying I could have seen this coming but it’s something to keep in your mind when assessing similar games in the future.

All of those losses today were due to unforeseen circumstances and not due to a fault in my system. I probably could have been smarter about the Eagles game and just not played it but I stand by the other two picks.

well not completely off the map. but in philly (one of my very favorite cities) w/family recovering from, well, everything. i’ve really (understatement!) needed the time away to clear my mind (and nostrils) and just…relax. i actually don’t think i’ve relaxed like this in a long long time.

i’m going back to baltimore tomorrow, praying that our house doesn’t stink anymore. the city has cleaned out the old man’s house and put lye where the body was. hopefully that’ll do the trick, but they still need to remove parts of the floor and the (basement) ceiling where, yeah. you do the math on that one (!). the more we hear (and see, we saw pictures of the inside of his place; ugh) from the health dept., the more it makes sense that our house has stunk like it has.

so, as of tomorrow afternoon, bye bye philly, hello again, baltimore. i’m ready to start fresh and really think things are going to start going our way. i mean, hell, we’ve hit rock bottom i think. so here’s to coming back up.

i hope you all had a wonderful holiday!!

Just saw Law Abiding Citizen at the cinema which is a thriller directed by F. Gary Gray from a screenplay written by Kurt Wimmer. The film stars Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler. The film is based in Philadelphia and is about a man who decides to seek justice after his family is killed during a break in at his house.

I was excited to see this film because i really enjoyed Gerard Butler in 300 and rock n Rolla. I thought that both Butler and Jamie Foxx gave very strong performances and they suited the characters very well.

The film was over the top in parts and sometimes ridiculous but at the same time it was extremely entertaining. It keeps you interested throughout and the film has a very good ending. The film is hard-hitting, tense, violent and exciting.

I really recommend this film if you are a fan of thrillers. The film has elements of Saw, Seven and State of Play.

I really enjoyed this film

Film Rating: 8/10

There are quite a few NFL games I like this week. So let’s just get right to them: CIN vs CLE

There are quite a few NFL games I like this week. So let’s just get right to them:

CIN vs CLE; CIN -13, u-39.5

Nothing about Cleveland has changed my mind about them. Sure, they put up a bunch of points against Detroit (more than they had scored in the previous 5 games combined), but that was against the Lions. And look at how many points they gave up. Cincinnati needs this game as a pick-me-up after their embarrassing loss to the Raiders last week. I’m seeing 31-6.

TB vs ATL, ATL -12, o-46

I must warn you, I don’t know if I’d play this game. I’m including it since my GFS is calling it but I have a feeling it is skewed toward Atlanta due to earlier season trends when Atlanta was doing well and Tampa wasn’t. Both have flipped a U. Well I don’t know if you could call the Buccaneers a 180 turn because they’ve still only won 1, but the fact that the Falcons have only won 1 in their last 5 gives me cause for concern. I still think Atlanta will pull it off but maybe not by 12. 28-21, at most 31-21.

CAR vs NYJ; NYJ -3.5, 0-41.5

Here we have another example of two team on crossing paths. The Jets started how and have slowly cooled to a simmer, while the Panthers are just revving up now and they seem to have met right at 4-6 records. I think the Jets are the better team, though, and Rex Ryan has had enough of losing to mediocre teams. As long as the Jets can control their turnovers, they’ll win. I may buy 1 point on this game, though, as I could see it being won by a field goal to make it 34-31. Otherwise, I see 28-34.

SEA vs STL, SEA -4, u-42.5

As a dedicated Hawks fan, this makes me nervous. Seattle is just the kind of ball club to lose to the Rams right now. I think the Seahawks are a much better team but they have too many mental problems right now. I want to take this one so bad as Seattle has the potential of a huge slaughtering, but I could see it going the other way as well. The most likely case I see is this game is a mess with tons of turnovers but the Hawks win it 24-17.

WAS vs PHI, PHI -9, o-40.5

Yet another one I’m on the fence with, but in the end I have to go with the stronger team. The Eagles haven’t looked good in 3 weeks now, while the Redskins beat the Broncos by 10 two weeks ago and nearly shut out the Cowboys until a late game drive put Dallas on the board to win the game 7-6. We may not see the full return of the Eagles as Westbrook is still out, but I think Washington’s inability to capitalize on their defensive success last week foreshadows their inability find any success this week. Eagles win 31-17.

Those are all the games I’m going to give you this week. I’ll write up an in-depth report the Monday Night game later. Best of Luck!

Yup, that’s Freeway, in mural form. Philly’s got a long proud history of civic mural-making, and now they’re doing themselves one better. There’s a group of artistic getting-thangs-done types running rampant across the City of Brotherly Love, repurposing old advertisements, reinterpreting public space, and occasionally updating paintings of fishermen into the Philly Freezer. It’s all part of a project called A Love Letter For You, and the central purpose is to write a love letter to the city, one wall at a time. The rest of it – aka the Freeway alterations – is a bit off-mission, but it provides some of the highlights. Check ‘er out.

Yes. Exhausted, yet refreshed is exactly how I feel coming off of an amazing time in Philly for the

Yes. Exhausted, yet refreshed is exactly how I feel coming off of an amazing time in Philly for the NCTE National Convention. With six presentations, I was constantly on the go-go-go. But I still met amazing people, learned a lot, and shared my ideas with educators from all over. (Oh, and can’t forget eating the amazing food from the market!)

I caught a glimpse of a note someone had down stating that if you don’t reflect within 48 hours of the convention, you wouldn’t do it. I, however, disagree (at least in my case) because I haven’t stopped reflecting! And now that I have a bit of time to sit down and catch my breath, I plan on writing about my NCTE experience in the next few posts…

But first…a few initial comments:

If you haven’t heard about the National Writing Project, I suggest you check it out. I was fortunate enough to check in with the NWP crowd as NWP also had its convention in Philly during NCTE. Smart work being down there.

After reading this blog post on PLNs (personal learning networks), I am reminded that one of the most important things about all of the web 2.0/social networking/online “stuff” in general is that they all have the potential to create very powerful communities. The communities I have joined help connect me to teachers all over…teachers who are willing to try/learn/play with new ideas…teachers who push my own thinking on pedagogy. Though there are a lot of teachers who are active members in their PLNs, there are still too many out there who do not utilize/fully appreciate/understand their importance. And at least in my experience, these people are often the ones who treat their classrooms like islands, who don’t value new literacies, and who need PLNs the most.

My point here? Teachers need to remember to grow and learn, too. We need to model what learning looks like for our students. We need to be open-minded and become problem solvers willing to adapt to our students changing needs. We need to be comfortable with the fact that technology integration can connect us with people all over…sometimes in ways that no longer make us the “expert” in the room…and we need to be ok with that. We need to embrace change. We need to always try/learn/play.

And with that said, be on the lookout for more insight into the NCTE Convention!

“I just like to smile. Smiling’s my favorite!” -Elf

Life is good.
My dad came to visit us for Thanksgiving. Great memories were made.
My husband and I hosted our first holiday. It was a success.
My mother in law and her husband are amazing. So is the pumpkin bread she made.
My sister in law is so cool. We had a sleepover party!
My father in law and family are full of holiday cheer. Thanksgiving dinner was fun.

I missed the rest of my family in Rhode Island and all over the world (Italy, Jordan, England, California, and more), but they were in our hearts with us!

Brunch was really fun (original menu here). All morning my sister in law and I chatted while cooking and watching the Thanksgiving parade and PhillyBoy went to pick up my dad. When PB returned with my dad and my mother in law and her husband arrived, it was time to eat! Everything went on the table at once, but I should have waited until right before everyone arrived to make the egg frittata muffins because they were at room temperature instead of hot. Besides that I’d say everything went really well! We ate, drank coffee and tea, and chatted and laughed. After brunch we watched part of our wedding video as we just got it and all relaxed. It was a fabulous brunch!

The table:

My yogurt bowl.. Yeah, I didn’t like it:

The holiday was so fun and it was great having my dad here! Remember: When hosting a party nothing has to be perfect- with a nice presentation no one will notice!

This post came two days late because my husband and I have been busy getting the house ready for Christmas! We just got back from Target where we bought our first tree!!!!!

We are currently watching Elf (my FAVORITE) and putting up our tree.

I feel so blessed.

Smith first reported on FoxSports.com today, November the 28th, that the Philadelphia 76ers are seriously considering signing unrestricted free agent, PG Allen Iverson who announced his retirement before Thanksgiving. According to Smith’s report, Coach Eddie Jordan would be one of the many names inside the organization in favor of the move. If signed, Iverson would replace starter Lou Williams who will be missing 8 weeks with a broken jaw.

Philadelphia starts the season with a 5-11 record, lost 5 straight and has allowed 101.8 points per game this year. The only 3 teams with a worse record than the Sixers are the Knicks, the Nets and the Timberwolves.

Maybe worse than the bad start on the numbers, is the bad start on the court. The 76ers have played ugly basketball so far. With Elton Brand back, Philadelphia has struggled on offense. Before the season opener, I thought Eddie Jordan could be the one to find a way to fit Brand on the system. I was wrong. More so than ever, they seem conflicted between going inside with Brand and spreading the floor to open space for Iguodala. And that has made both of them ineffective. Iguodala hasn’t been able to carry them like he did last year and Brand looks like a cadaver, unable to be on the floor on clutch moments.

Adding Iverson to that mix is not the solution. This team proved last year that is more than capable of making a run on the second half of the season, wins 50% of their games and reach the playoffs on the Eastern Conference. All they have to do is get back to the Iguodala Isotope. They should admit that the Elton Brand experiment is a failed one and handle the team back to AI9.

Just by considering bringing “the Answer” back shows how desperate they are in Pennsylvania. After they found out that Williams would be out for two months, the first option was to give rookie Jrue Holliday more minutes but after yesterday’s loss to Atlanta, maybe that has changed. Signing Iverson will bring the excitement back but won’t translate into wins. He’s an important part of the franchise’s past but shouldn’t be a part of their present. It’s time for the organization to start looking ahead and looking ahead means not signing AI; he’s not the right answer for their problems.

Interpol’s lead man, Paul Banks, brought his solo project Julian Plenti to the basement of the First Unitarian Church for the last show of his 10 show tour in support of his debut solo record, Julian Plenti Is…..Sckyscraper . Considering Banks and his three Interpol mates put out one of my favorite records of all time, 2002’s Turn On The Bright Lights, it was a treat to see him in such a small, intimate venue.

Even though it was not Interpol, his performance as Julian Plenti was still excellent. Banks played all the songs off Julian Plenti is…..Skyscraper with a few covers thrown in. The songs translated much better live than they did on the record. His supporting band were a very weird bunch compared to his serious looking Interpol bandmates. They looked like they were just randomly thrown together especially the guitarist. He was a little bit of a distraction: he mouthed every word, he had a Hitler style mustache and he was rowdy next to the very calm Banks. That being said, the guy absolutely ripped on the guitar, which I guess makes up for his obnoxious self.

At the end of the evening, Mr. Banks thanked the crowd for a wonderful evening and declared them as the best audience of the tour. They were very loud and made sure to show their appreciation for his music. Photos/setlist below.

Commonly located at the center of its core, urban parks play a significant role in providing traffic-choked cities with much-needed green lungs. As well as recreation, sporting and cultural venues for residents and visitors alike. Here’s a look at some of the larger urban parks from across the world.

FAIRMONT PARK, PHILADELPHIA (9,200 ACRES)

Philadelphia, better known under its nickname “Philly” or “City of Brotherly Love” is home to the expansive Fairmont Park that spans 9,200 acres. Owned and managed by the City of Philadelphia, Fairmount Park spreads across a few different communities and includes several smaller neighborhood parks, but the largest single section of park land covers 4,400 acres along the Schuylkill River. Believe it or not, Fairmount Park is almost 200 years older than Central Park in New York.

This November we traveled to Wahington D.C. to visit our good friend Bill. Before leaving we decided

This November we traveled to Wahington D.C. to visit our good friend Bill. Before leaving we decided we would take notes on our vegan dining adventures in the Mid-Atlantic. We found some real gems. Not only did we eat … we got to see my brother Kevin and spend a day in Philly, drive down the Chesapeake Bay, visit markets, nature hikes with giant vultures(!) and the cutest kitchen store east of the Mississippi. SEE OUR TRAVEL PHOTOS HERE

Day 1, Chicago, IL to Rockville, MD:

We left Molly and Boo in the care of some super friends and were on our way! Driving from Chicago to Maryland took about 12 hours. My giant thermos of green tea stayed hot the whole time! We packed peanut butter sandwiches, apples, and some things we normally don’t have in the apartment (chips, pretzels, crackers). As Jason ate his sandwich before we had even left Cook County, you can imagine that our road food was gone by the halfway point. Mid-way through Pennsylvania we hit up a Taco Bell at the I70/76 Breezewood junction as it was closing. Starving we ordered a ridiculous amount of bean burritos without cheese. Thank you TBell for being there on the open road.

Day 2, Washington DC:

After one heck of a escalator ride up three stories or more at the at the Adams Morgan Metro exit we emerged to lots of good smells piping out of a block of Indian and Mediterranean restaurants, which we took to be a good omen for any dining for that day. We stolled around without any real destination in mind exploring Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, Embassy Row and the Dupont Circle. We did little planning or vegan reconnaissance for eating on this trip. Usually on vacation we have a strict agenda of exhibits I want to see, restaurants we want to eat at and a few must-visit sites. Playing it by ear added to the relaxed mood of the trip this time. We did use VegDC.com for a helpful reference.

We decided to start our vegan dining adventure with crazy toppings at the Amsterdam Falafelshop. Walking down 18th Street we spotted this hotspot with patrons spilling out of the patio onto the stoop next door, eating fries out of white paper cones and enjoying every morsel of their stuffed sandwiches. Definitely looked like the place to eat on a Saturday afternoon. We lined up inside to order and next to the register found a fresh-looking buffet with a ton of choices to top off your falafel sandwich from jerusalem salad to pickled beets. I put a combo of spicey sauce, sweet purple cabbage and some kind of cucumber and onion mix on our sandwich. The topping station was pretty intense and you didn’t have much time to think, but the sandwich was great and probably would be with any of the toppings!

After some more walking, people-watching by the Dupont Circle Fountain, meeting up with Bill and visiting the Phillips Collection for a dose of art & culture we set out on a quest to find dinner. We had heard that DC has an awesome, vegan-friendly Ethiopian dining scene, so we walked over to the U-Street area and quickly found our dinner spot, Dukem. Enjoyed this restaurant a lot. Three of us split a giant platter of food with lots of variety in flavors and textures. Great place to share a special meal. We also enjoyed our glasses of Gouder, an Ethiopian wine.

After short walks through the happening U-Street neighborhood and the National Mall, we went back to the Metro and then Rockville, so we could rest up for Philly.

Day 3, Philadelphia, PA:

Bill, Jason and I met my brother Kevin at the Reading Terminal Market on Sunday Morning. This market is a giant bizarre of resturants and shops, continually operating since 1892. The four of us split up and all came back to the table with veg friendly eats! Jason found a plate of Chana masala, daal and rice, Bill scored a soy BLT, Kevin got falafel and I had a sandwich of stuffed grape leaves and fresh juice. Yummy and inexpensive.

We walked all over that afternoon. Saw the Liberty Bell, Eastern State Penitentary (admission includes an audio tour narrated by Steve Buscemi), walked along the river, toured the super cool Fabric Workshop and Museum where I got to sit inside a story hut made from handcrafted fibers, and stood on the ROCKY steps.

Although we covered a lot of ground in the city, we ended up eating dinner just a few blocks from the Reading Terminal Market at the Kingdom of Vegetarians Restaurant. I had never had dim sum before and always wanted to, so I jumped at the chance to try this place out. Oh my! So much food and it just kept coming! Liked almost every dish brought to the table, especially the wonton soup, sesame mock duck and steamed dumplings. The food on the other patrons’ tables looked fresh and delicious, too. Another very special meal. Highly recommend checking this place out while in Philly!

Day 4, Chesapeake Bay & Rockvile, MD:

The next day we spent exploring the Chesapeake Bay area. Didn’t stop for anything to eat, so when we returned to Rockville we were hungry and had pizza on the brain. We were shocked when a google search for “Rockville vegan pizza” came up with an option only a couple of miles away, Zpizza. We dialed up right away and felt confident we would get a delivery with no cheese. 30 minutes later Zpizza delivered. The crust perfect, sauce was skimpy but good… but the daiya brand vegan “cheese” melted on top was disgusting. Sure we ate the whole thing (we paid for it), but it honestly tasted like movie-theatre-fake-butter-flavor and chemicals. Much prefer our homemade pizza creations.

Day 5, Washington DC & Rockvile, MD:

Back to DC for more touring. This day we saw the excellent Green Community exhibit at the National Building Museum and a lot more of the city by foot.

For lunch we stopped at the acclaimed DC vegan bakery, Sticky Fingers. We had some great sandwiches–a chix’n wrap and a bar-b-que seitan sandwich with some killer red cabbage slaw. We took the desserts to go, but didn’t even make it to the Columbia Heights metro stop before our curiosity got the best of us. We had the oatmeal creme sandwich bar and a lemon coconut cookie. Both were so good. I vow to learn to make that sandwich cookie, which was a better version of one of my childhood favs, the Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pie.

In search of the Eastern Market, we stopped for directions in the most adorable kitchen supply store, Hill’s Kitchen. They have everything you could need for your kitchen and a great selection of classes. We picked up a new Epicurean cutting board, one of those onion savers that looks like an onion, and a cookie cutter shaped like Illinois!

Then we strolled through the lovely Eastern Market to find some fixins’ for our dinner. We picked up some tofu, green beans, onions and rice to take back to Rockville, where Jason whipped up a great great stir fry and I made a vegan gluten-free apple crisp. This home cooking with Bill was our favorite meal of the whole trip.

Day 6, Rockville, MD to Chicago, IL:

The next day we headed back to Chicago. Stopped for some vegan road eats at Panera Bread in a rest area of 1-80 in Ohio. We were sorry to see the trip end, but happy to see Molly and Boo greeting us at the door.

Can’t wait to return again to the Mid-Atlantic for a visit next year! Thank you Bill for putting us up and Kevin for the Philly day!
