This is a list of good movies to watch while high on Pot that I decided to compile, after smoking a little Pot. I started it and got quite most of it done and then pawned the rest off on a couple of buddies! These are in no particular order, and this list isn’t "The Best Movies to Watch High on Pot," just some good movies to watch while enjoying the green.

Any Monty Python Movie (but especially Monty Python and the Holy Grail)

ADDED LATE: At first for got to add any Monty Python, mostly due to smoking pot and getting distracted by shiny things! Anyway, anything by Monty Python fits the bill for good watching while high…anything. I especially like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, though, as I believe it just may be the pinnacle of humour!

Just an all round cool movie with cool characters. Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey Lebowski (aka "The Dude") is amazing, and John Goodman as The Dudes friend Walter Sobchak is a performance you won’t soon forget. A mix up around two people with the same name that leads to an epic battle to get the Dude’s carpet replaced or cleaned after a thug pissed on it… Never mind that, just take a few puffs and watch the damn thing!

One of the best Summer comedies of all time! Trouble’s brewing at an upscale private golf course/country club when a crass, fun loving loudmouthed millionaire plans on joining the quiet and normally reserved club. Bill Murray puts in one of the funniest performances ever captured on film (in my opinion, at least), as the messed up, pot smokin’, gopher hunting groundskeeper Carl Spackler. Great performances from Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield (his best performance!) and Ted Night make this one a gem.

Mel Brooks takes on Star Wars. Brooks comedic genius combined with alumni of the great Canadian Second City Television (SCTV) Rick Moranis and the late John Candy makes this a winning sci-fi cheesefest.

Evil Dead 2

A Sam Raimi masterpiece. I know it’s it’s Evil Dead 2, but it’s not necessary to watch the first. Evil Dead 2 is written as if the first didn’t take place, despite both staring the great Bruce Campbell and taking place in the same old scary cabin. It’s just that I find the second movie superior. Even so, I still suggest watching the original Evil Dead.

A Scanner Darkly

An award winning book by Philip K. Dick, translated into an animation meets reality festival for the eyes with a story that draws you deep into itself. A twisted tale of a deep undercover vice cop trying to find the source of the drug "Substance D," a drug that he himself has become addicted to. A myriad of twisted characters and plot drive this movie. A great cast of actors including Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Winona Ryder and Woody Harrelson certainly doesn’t hurt either. Try to make sure you smoke your good, heavy mental stuff for this movie.

Pink Floyd The Wall

An over the top, self indulgent whiny story about how shitty life would be if you were a fabulously filthy rich monster rock star made of equal parts Syd Barret and Roger Waters. Oh, and it totally freakin’ rocks. Pink Floyd’s monster Rock Opera concept album, The Wall fuels this warped, cool stylistic animations mixed with live action. A feast for the ears, eyes and mind. Puff away!!!

One of the most disjointed plot-lines I’ve ever seen with a bizarre collection of animated characters including a floating, super-powerful "fries", a milkshake with tiny hands, a suggested omniscient watermelon and his side-kick, Rush’s Niel Peart. The "Let’s All Grab a Snack" retro intro is classic. "Don’t talk, watch! Don’t talk, watch! You came here, watch it! You don’t like it, walk out!

The very first movie from John Landis (He even has a cameo). This collection of skits, satire, and parodies from 1977 stands also as one of the first efforts from the creative team of Jim Abrahams and the Zucker Brothers of Airplane! and The Naked Gun fame. It sports a "movie within-a-movie" called "A fist Full of Yen" which is a spoof of Enter the Dragon. Classic. Any movie that starts off with a news anchor stating "The popcorn you are eating has been pissed in…film at 11" receives high accolades.

di Luca Briasco

Finzioni DOPO LA FINE

Now work with me here. I know its a leap, but I’m starting to think that the hit television show Madmen is a work of science fiction.

I’ve been geeking out over Madmen season two for the last fortnight. And when I say geeking out, I mean obsessing. Having watched season one three times (friends kept wanting to see it, so I had to rewatch it with them) I decided it was time to move on to the second season. Partly its the soap opera aspect of the show, once you get me hooked on the life stories of a good ensemble of characters, I’m likely to keep coming back for more and more. But Madmen goes a long, long way beyond the simplistic writing of most soap operas, and even exceeds the spate of recent excellent TV series including The Sopranos and The Wire. In an era when the TV series has become our strongest storytelling vehicle, Madmen is telling the best stories of all.

It’s on the thematic level that Madmen really triumphs. Through the lens of the advertising industry, Madmen is able to look at individual facets of our modern, ever more materialist society. Each character in the show is in someway complicit in the construction of the amoral society that they are also a victim of. From the lead male Don Draper who harnesses the pain of losing love to sell products even while his own family is slipping from his grasp, to junior copywriter Betty Olsen who understands every sin she is committing even whilst she is committing them. As a beat poet charcater says to draper in season one, the characters in Madmen ‘are making the lie’, and then they have to live in it.

And its because of its critique of materialist culture that Madmen is creeping over some line in my thinking to qualify as science fiction. Not in the rockets and rayguns way of course. No, Madmen is a much more interesting kind of SF than that. Imagine if Philip K Dick had been given free reign to write a television show, with the provision that it had to be entirely realist and mainstream. And imagine that J G Ballard and Harlan Ellison were asked in to consult. They might have come up with something not dissimilar from Madmen. There is a thread of paranoia and hyper-realism threaded through the show, as though the materialist reality the characters are inhabiting is actually some artificial projection a la The Truman Show or a PKD novel like Ubik. In season 2 the show introduces an overt discussion of god and morality, which culminates in the heavy symbolism of catholicism and the tarot playing out to the backdrop of the Cuban missile crisis, as though some greater power is trying to commune with the characters. Its tempting to think of madmen as the most subversive kind of science fiction, one that works by treating reality itself as the biggest fiction we have ever created.

I’m saving Madmen season 3 for a rainy day, so now what the hell do I watch?

I have for a long time been fascinated by letter writing and reading (and personally wish I did a better job at writing more of them myself). I remember finding a number of various letter, written by people I never knew (nor ever will) in my grandmother’s basement some years back. They were amazing!

As such, perhaps one of my favorite blogs of recent weeks has to be Letters of Note which collects and transcribes letters written by all sorts of people of some fame throughout the years. Many of them are absolutely amazing and wonderful and provide us insight into a world most of us don’t get to encounter. Two recent favorites appearing on the blog are from two of my all-time favorite authors. One by Philip K. Dick on weird, worthless dreams and one by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. about his experience as a POW in Dresden.

I must admit that part of me wonders if it is altogether proper or ethical to read letters that were intended for other people. Probably if I didn’t find letters so interesting I would feel that reading another persons private correspondences is something like spying. But I do find them too fascinating, and fascination tells me reading the letters can’t be all that bad (especially when you place moral judgements on any number of other things that people do on a daily basis).

If you are interested check some of those letters out, you may be amazed at some of the things you learn or discover.

Philip K Dick was brought back to life as a fully autonomous conversational android.

A team of roboticists, computer scientists, designers, and science fiction fans built a “robotic portrait” of the sci-fi author. The project was a collaboration between Hanson Robotics, the University of Memphis, and the Automation and Robotics Research Institute (ARRI) at the University of Texas, Arlington. The android used cameras to track visitors and turn to face them while talking. It used speech recognition and speech synthesis software to listen and respond, and AI routines that drew on Dick's body of work to hold a natural conversation with visitors.

The project is an unparalleled technical demonstration as well as a unique and strong work of art. With an artificial intelligence based persona based on the life and works of Philip K. Dick, the robot depicts the author with stunning accuracy. Using cameras in his eyes, the Android is able to recognize individuals in a crowd and can carry on conversations.

Hello! It’s Sunday. And Sundays, well, Sundays are boring, right? Right. Went and saw 2012 yes

Hello! It’s Sunday. And Sundays, well, Sundays are boring, right? Right.

Went and saw 2012 yesterday, as promised. It was, well… Hmm.

My first reaction to it: Ehhhh. Not horrible, but not great. It’s exactly what’s advertised on the tin, I’ll put it this way. You’ve got a lot of real actors doing some cartoon shit while the world goes to hell all around them. The cast, when you think about it, is actually quite impressive. Also, Woody Harrelson’s in the mix too.

My second reaction to it: Why the fuck didn’t this come out in the middle of the summer?

Third reaction: Comedy of the year, hands down.

Especially in a year when, if you think about it, the big comedy was… what? The Hangover? Right? Get serious. I never saw the movie, I won’t lie, but for a lot of reasons. Primarily, things like the trailer. Did you see it? It looks like it was made for retarded boys. But, you know what’s even worse than the trailer? Listening to people who actually liked the movie. They sound like retarded boys, don’t they? Anyway.

But I really feel like 2012 deserves a good proper Counterforce review. It really does. It’s really our kind of movie, and I mean that in the best and worst possible ways. I don’t know that I’m the man for that job. Benjamin Light, I’m looking at you. Are you the man for that job?

Anyway, I went and saw the film yesterday with Conrad Noir and walking out of the theater, still buzzing from all that ridiculousness, we saw this:

And we thought, “Dear God, who gave that man wings.” Much less Wings Of Desire and much more Red Bull: The Movie.

But then we got into a little conversation, talking about this and that and action heroes of the 80s, mostly cause we’ve been watching a lot of that horrendous/wonderful action movie fare from that decade, and we were talking about how action stars back then were so… foreign seeming. And maybe that contributed a lot to their allure. Maybe it also made some of the ridiculousness easier to stand, too?

For example there, Benjamin Light and were discussing a week or so ago what a remake of The Terminator would look like – since the franchise is up for sale, and should be sold to Joss Whedon, of course, cause why not? – And I brought up the question, “Does the killer robot from the future have to be Austrian?” Commander Light emphatically assured he that it indeed had to be. I’m taking his word for it.

Anyway, so Conrad and I, discussing action stars today, talking about guys like Dwayne Johnson, and how, in our minds, he’s not really latched on with America. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the idea of a “non-conventional” action star quite a bit, i.e. a non white guy running around screaming at people, doing high kicks, and blowing copious amounts of shit up. So why hasn’t “The Rock” caught on with us? I posit two possibilities:

1. In a grab for “credibility” or attempting to “not being as big a joke as he is,” he ditched his silly little wrestling moniker, “The Rock,” and went with his real name: Dwayne Johnson. Except, we can’t root for a guy named Dwayne.

2. Not foreign enough? Perhaps? I suggest investigating this has merit. Especially since it seems American action-loving fans get a bigger hard on from a ponce like Jason Statham than Dwayne Johnson.

Then, walking out of the theater, Conrad and I were looking at the various posters on display, the coming soons and the current releases. Part of me still wants to see This Is It. I’m a Michael Jackson fan, I won’t hide it. But I’m also a huge Richard Matheson fan, and while I have serious reservations about the movie, I also kind of want to see The Box.

But I don’t know that I trust Richard Kelly anymore. Donnie Darko was okay when it first came out, before you put it through any real tests of serious thought or logic and saw through it’s masturbatory philophosizing. It’s a glorified remake of Last Temptation Of Christ that doesn’t fully pan out. But Kelly also went on to make – speaking of Dwayne Johnson – the gloriously bad Southland Tales.

Look, I’m not going to talk about the Philip K. Dick pastiche that was Southland Tales here. I’m just… not. I’m not going to do it. All I’ll say is I went into that movie wanting to like it. And I sit here now feeling like I’m a veteran of that war. It’s like Richard Kelly is George W. Bush and I was some dumb kid who supported the Iraq war until I went into the fucker and got my bits and pieces all cut off. Now I’m shell shocked.

But, yeah, there’s The Box, directed by Richard Kelly, starring Cameron Diaz and James Marsden, based on the Richard Matheson story, “Button, Button,” and was previously adapted into an episode of The Twilight Zone. We’ll see if I ever see it.

And again, here we are. It’s Sunday. Tomorrow’s the start of the “work week.” I’d love to Weeks In Review here at Counterforce, but lately it’s just me rambling and I’d feel bad directing the two and a half readers of this site back to more of me rambling. Poor fuckers. Oh yeah, the season finale of Mad Men was last Sunday. And we had a Friday the 13th happen this past week as well. There you go. Oh, and: Young women having sex with sea creatures. Now there you really go.

But again, here we are. It’s Sunday. Let’s see, let’s see, let’s see… Oh! Tonight was the airing of the latest Doctor Who special over in the UK, “The Waters Of Mars,” the start of the end of David Tennant’s run as #10. You can catch it online if you’re good, if you’re very good, and it’s dark. And a bit sad. And leaves you kind of sweaty and breathless too.

Also tonight is AMC’s remake of the classic 60s show, The Prisoner. I’d watch it, but I’m not sure I want to see my childhood get raped so thoroughly and with such production values. Ian McKellen is a good choice for just about anything, but Jim Caviezel? I think I hate you for that, AMC. Honestly, Jim Caviezel makes Keanu Reeves look like Marlon Brando to me.

Oh well, here we are. The weekend’s almost over. I went to the movies to watch the end of the world as we know it and…

It’s already half way through November and I’m only just getting around to writing about

It’s already half way through November and I’m only just getting around to writing about October’s books – let’s hope I can spin a full post from my half-arsed notes. As always, all my books are kept in chronological order, I then alternately read the book I’ve had longest (marked B.H.L.), followed by a free choice (F.C.). For a full description of my insane book selection rules, please click here.

Books Read

I started the month by reading Street Magic (B.H.L.) by Paul Zenon. I bought it a few years ago, probably from Borders, because I suddenly got it in to my head that it would be a good thing to be able to do a few magic tricks. Please don’t ask me where this spurious thought came from as I don’t have a clue. Anyway, I did read some of it at the time but it all seemed a bit like hard work, and, not being afraid to give up when something proves tricky, it found its way to my To Be Read pile.

As I started my second reading of the book I soon remembered my original sticking point: palming. Not wanting to divulge too many magician’s secrets, this is the skill of concealing a coin in your hand. And I just couldn’t do it. I did practice, but, although I could have practised more, I didn’t feel myself getting any better at it, and so I wondered if I was missing something fundamental. Anyway, this time I decided just to read it through and see what happened.

There is actually a variety of impressive tricks within the book and it soon became apparent to me that it’s not enough to know the secrets of a magic trick; in order to pull it off you need equal measures of expertise and performance. Far from spoiling my enjoyment of the art of illusion, reading this book actually increased my respect for its practitioners.

Next up came Archangel (F.C.) by Robert Harris. This was a random purchase from the British Heart Foundation shop because I’d read, and enjoyed, Fatherland, Harris’ first novel. This book has the distinction of being the first ever F.C. that has also been the B.H.L., for whatever that’s worth. It’s an end-of-the-cold-war thriller that charts an academic’s quest to locate an old notebook of Stalin’s. It’s one of those strange stories in which nothing really seems to happen and yet it is still somehow quite gripping. It was a fun read but I don’t really have much more to say on it.

It’s another random British Heart Foundation buy next with The Man in the High Castle (B.H.L.) by Philp K. Dick, which I bought because I was interested to read a Philip K. Dick novel. It was a great choice and I was hooked from the minute I started readig; it was the kind of book that makes you remember why you love reading so much.

It’s an alternate history novel set in an America following a Second World War which was won by Germany and Japan. The Axis powers have carved the globe up between them, and this includes North America – the east coast belongs to Japan and the west to Germany. This kind of premise could have carried out very heavy handedly, but Dick shows an incredibly subtle touch. We see this unfamiliar world through the eyes of ordinary people and so the horrors perpetrated by the Nazis are only ever discussed third hand. This makes them seem only more sinister.

In addition to this is a whole subtext about the nature of reality. Many of the characters are reading a novel-within-a-novel called The Grasshopper Lies Heavy, which is in itself an alternative history in which the Allies won the war – which is a reality subtly but significantly different to our own. There are moments in the story when one reality appears to blend in to another, but it is done in a way that you are unsure as to whether it happened or not. What is true and what is false? There are no answers here but the questions are certainly interesting.

I first heard of The End of Faith (F.C.) by Sam Harris a few years ago, primarily because he is a pal of Richard Dawkins, and that is always a good recommendation. It’s a devastating attack not only on religion but on the nature of faith itself. To be fair, and pardon the pun, he is already preaching to the converted, so luckily there was even more food for thought. For example, he poses the question as to whether torture be ethical, and asks if pacifism is immoral. It’s a very well written, intelligent book, but towards the end he lost me a bit with his thoughts on spirituality as they, superficially at least, seem to conflict with his otherwise rational arguments. It’s pretty brave of him to go down that road though. A further, petty criticism is the amount of end notes – I didn’t know whether to skip them or not.

My final book of the month was the rather unusual choice of Buying and Running a Florist Shop (B.H.L.) by Alan Peck. You’d be forgiven for thinking that it was a wacky women’s novel, but it is actually a manual on buying and running a florists shop. In case you’re wondering, I didn’t buy the book and I won’t bore you with the details on how I came to own such a book. Strangely, I actually found it to be an enjoyable read. It’s a slim, straightforward volume that gives an insight in to what it must be like to run a small business. The main thing I took from it is that when you consider the low pay, long hours and undue pressure, being a florist is a thankless task. I suggest you go out and buy a florist some flowers today.

Books Acquired

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark – Bookmooch – This had been on my ‘wish list’ for years. I think I remember seeing a programme about it as part of the BBC’s Big Read, but I cannot remember anything about why this made me want to read it.

Moving Pictures by Terry Pratchett – Salvation Army shop – I decided a while ago to start reading the Discworld novels and then, fortuitously, someone at work gave me a load of them. Sadly, there were omissions and so any books that are not contiguous in the serial are not on my official TBR pile. This was one of the missing and so I was very glad to see it. It was 50p.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad – Salvation Army shop - It was slim, I’d heard of it and it was 50p. Why wouldn’t I buy it?

Books Given Away on Bookmooch

How the Mind Works by Steven Pinker – I bought this from the British Heart Foundation even though I knew that there was a good chance that I already had it. It’s the kind of book that you don’t see all that often in a charity shop, so I bought it anyway. Of course, I already had it at home sat in my TBR pile. It’s a weird feeling to give away a book that I haven’t read yet.

Result

Books Read 5 – Books Acquired 3, result – A WIN!!!!!

I never thought I’d see the day that I’d record a win in Reading Habits, so it’s champagne all around (if you happen to be in my house as I type this). Everything is looking rosy – except that we’re already half-way through the current month and I know it’s going to take a miracle for it not to be a big loss. Fingers crossed.

“H-I-T-L-E-R driving on the streets in fancy cars”

                                                           ~via this Wikipedia Article

The fact that there is an android with Philip K. Dick’s likeness is bad enough (did people miss the point of Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep and several of his other stories or something?) but the thought of that android being out on the loose somewhere in the world is even worse.

Now, a skeptic about how much of a GDAFSA this is, might point out that the android is “remote-controlled.” Sure, fine I’ll give you that, and then counter with “what’s your fucking point? It is still out their on the loose somewhere.”

Skeptics might then be tempted to point out that it is probably sitting around in some fanboy/girl’s basement or garage. Really? Great!

Not!

It was deranged fanboys/girls who built this abomination in the first place. Now some unknown individual has the horrid android in their possession and is probably just waiting for the day to unleash it on the unsuspecting world.

If anyone can appreciate my concern I imagine it is my good friend Adam “Bear” Gautsch (whom I deeply offended with my previous anti-orange post. sorry dude). Bear has maintained a healthy and logical anti-robot stance, which is precisely what we are going to need to avoid conquest by our metallic machine overlords.

That being said, self-aware Philip K. Dick androids must be stopped!

J’ai vu mourir le World Trade Center, l’A.S.

Questo Fini scopre i Pink Floyd assistendo allo storico concerto di Pompei, prova la mescalina mentre ascolta Set the control for the heart of the sun.

I have a short list of books that are my all time favorites. You know the kind you never tire of? The kind that charm and seduce you and still manage to feel comfortable and familiar? The ones I’d grab in a fire. Those are the books that live on my holy shelf. It’s an altar to literature, of sorts. Unfortunately it’s not a real shelf, but maybe one day it will be.

Right now, there aren’t many titles on it, just a few really. Here’s three:

If on a winter’s night a traveler – Italo Calvino

This novel starts out:

You are about to begin reading Italo Calvino’s new novel, If on a winter’s night a travler. Relax. Concentrate. Dispel every other thought. Let the world around you fade.

Not many pages after these very welcoming first lines you come to find out that the “you” in the book is not you the reader, it’s the main character. And the author of the book being read is considerably different than the book in your hands. That’s when things start to get crazy. Any author who has the guts to write like this and the skill to do it well is someone who loves to play with literature and someone I’m glad to spend time with.

Invisible Man - Ralph Ellison

If there was ever a book that could be named the great American novel, Invisible Man would be my nomination. The narrator shares his story of trying to become a man greater than who he thought he was, and through it we get a glimpse of an interwar America that is itself deep in the throes of growth and change set to a backdrop of jazz, politics and history.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? – Philip K. Dick

Yes, this is the book the film BladeRunner is based on, but they’re not the same. And I don’t mean that in any kind of depreciating way to the film. It’s gorgeous. But the irony is that in the translation from text to film, it seemed that some of Deckard’s humanity was lost. The film is done in the noir style and as such his detective character is very hard edged and nearly inpenetrable; weaknesses don’t show through often, or for long, when in fact the Deckard of the novel is trying to maintain that image but he’s too clearly vulnerable. Everything comes into question from his beliefs to his own existence and somewhere in the mess of it all, the world itself finds that it needs to come to terms with whether its real threats are from without, or within.

So that’s a few of my absolute favorite novels. How about you? What novels might exist on your own holy shelf?

By the way, the image is by moriza. It’s called On the platform, reading and you can check out more of his people watching photographic awesomeness here.

“Enoch Soames” – Beerbohm, Max

Qué decir… no mucho.
