When Philippe Starck works, our world watches – and when Starck teamed up with LaCie to help design two new external hard drives, we stayed attentive. Both the mobile and desktop hard drives appear to have fluid silver magma protected by a hard aluminum outer shell – or as Starck describes it, a brain with a motorcycle helmet.

Beyond pure aesthetics, the inner ‘brain’ is touch-sensitive as well, allowing users to manipulate applications. The devices connect via a USB cable and do not require their own power supply. Apesar das ideias de Victor Papanek sobre o Design como componente social fazerem sentido, não deixo de achar estranho o facto deste Designer não ligar de todo à estética dos seus trabalhos. Da mesma forma que acho estranho, quando o objectivo actual de muitos criativos é de reafirmar a importância do Design no Mundo actual, este ser muitas vezes utilizado unicamente como uma atraente armadilha para consumistas. A resposta mais adequada para cada trabalho deve ser encontrada algures entre estes dois extremos, num espaço de equilíbrio e compromisso.

Le designer Philippe Starck revisite le style Louis XV avec le fauteuil Louis Ghost de la marque Italienne Kartell. Réalisé en polycarbonate transparent ou coloré, cette adaptation ne peut que nous étonner, nous émouvoir, nous fasciner. L’apparente fragilité de ce fauteuil design contraste avec la robustesse du matériau utilisé, il résiste aux chocs, aux griffures…

I read the whole of Catching Fire yesterday, the second book in the Hunger Games trilogy. The author can get lazy, but she makes up for it with a really interesting concept that keeps you hooked. The series is about an anti-utopia where a central government (the Capitol) keeps an iron grip on twelve surrounding districts. Every year, there are Games to entertain the Capitol, and each district has to send tributes to fight in a holographic arena until one eventually kills off the others and emerges as victor. Very similar to how Athens sent tributes to Crete to feed the minotaur.

What really struck me was how the districts are isolated from each other. The Capitol doesn’t allow movement between districts so they all only have a vague idea of whats going on in the others.

Its quite similar to our world really. Of course, the closeted regimes in North Korea and Burma come to mind. We never know what’s going on in there, except that people keep dying under their oppression. And they definitely can’t tell whats going on here. Oh and we can’t forget China’s Great Firewall. Maybe I should write a few lines on the Tiananmen Square Massacre then go try to access my blog from Shanghai or something? I’ll do that another time.

But then, although we think we know what goes on in most of the world, we can’t really say with certainty. All we actually ‘know’ are after all, other people’s reports.

If we really wanted to be skeptical, we could take the Nazi/KKK point of view that Jews are actually in control of the media and commercial sector and are deceiving us as of now. But let’s not go there.

On a lighter note, does it get any better than Philippe Starck?

I think he might be the awesomest designer alive. Read his description of the teddybearband:

TeddyBearBand. In my opinion, an overabundance of toys fosters infidelity. Instead of forming a lasting attachment to one toy, the child flits ever faster from one to another, the greater the number of toys, the more frantic the pace. There is no reason that, later on, he or she should treat people, a friend or a lover any differently. As an advocate of the one-true-love approach, I dreamt of a single toy that would serve as an apprenticeship for the lasting human relationships that await our children. A surreal toy, TeddyBearBand stimulates the imagination, considerabily more than any mere plush bear. It removes love and friendship from the realm of disposable emotions.

TeddyBearBand. La multiplication des jouets me paraît favoriser l’infidélité: l’enfant ne s’attache en définitive à aucun, zappant de l’un à l’autre d’autant plus vite que les jouets sont nombreux. Il n’y a pas de raison pour que, plus tard, il se comporte différemment avec les gens, ami ou amant. Partisan d’un amour unique, j’ai rêve d’un jouet unique, une sorte d’entraînement à un attachement durable. Jouet surréaliste, TeddyBearBand fait aussi appel à l’imagination, bien plus loin que le simple ours en peluche. Il permet de placer l’amour et l’amitié en dehors du champ de la consommation.

När Philippe Starck skapade Miss Lacy så "stal" han

Nu ska jag vara ärlig, jag ska lätta mitt hjärta för er. För mig är ordet ”inspiration” väldigt nära ordet ”låna”. Om jag ser en stil, ett designgrepp eller bilder som jag gillar, dröjer det inte länge innan min stil är väldigt lik. Jag är omedvetet en liten stilkleptoman, som lånar och snor idéer och inspiration från min omgivning. Inte för att jag vill stjäla fantastiska människors skapelser, utan för att jag verkligen älskar och ser det fantastiska i det de gör. Oavsett om det är en liten möbel eller ett helt hem. Tänk själva, särskilt ni som arbetar med något kreativt, det ni gör och eran stil eller bitar av den tillhör förmodligen någon eller några andra från början. Det kan vara sättet ni jobbar med form på, eller färger, eller kombinationer, eller vacker arkitektur, eller hur ni hittat inspiration i fjärran miljöer. Inspirationen är i grunden samma sak. Man ser någon göra någonting riktigt läckert, och tänker; ”Det här är ju precis så jag menade, fast jag inte kunde sätt ord på det”.

Allting omkring oss som vi uppskattar och ser det goda i agerar inspiration och kreativt bränsle, och det vi skapar är ett enormt hopkok av allting. Det är omöjligt att skapa någonting utan influenser. Mästarna gör det. Designers gör det. Arkitekter gör det. Alla stjäl ur den totala erfarenhetskorg som vi människor tillsammans byggt upp. När Philippe Starck skapade Miss Lacy så “stal” han från olika hörn när han tittade på material, form, färg och funktion. Och de som påstår att de inte gjort det har svarta grodor som hoppar ur munnen…

Vroom. Here comes Philippe Starck on his motorbike to save British design. We’re in the home of British design, Paris, so it’s more like Vreurm. The 12 contenders on BBC2’s Design for Life applaud rapturously. If this was The Apprentice – the long-running reality show on which Design for Life has been closely modelled – you could imagine the no-nonsense entrepreneur Sir Alan Sugar scowling at this kind of toadying. But this isn’t Sralan, it’s Fleep, and Fleep laps it up…

I’m not entirely happy with this post but I’m sick of tinkering with it and my tea is nearly ready.  Here are some of the programmes that I’ve been watching this week.

Curb Your Enthusiasm: More 4 (Recorded 22nd Oct Watched 24th Oct)

The second episode of the new series had too many hilarious moments to mention.  The opening saw Larry have a fight with an unopenable blister pack.  This sounds incredibly cliched but LD gave his attack on the packet such manic frenzy that I thought he might actually hurt himself.

The next thing that I laughed out loud at was the line: ‘You DO have cancer…but how does that affect your driving?’  It probably doesn’t sound funny out of context, but I’m sure anyone who saw the episode will be laughing at the thought of it.  It’s also the kind of line that you’d only find on Curb.

Next came LD’s joy at the prospect of being the toxic part of a toxic relationship, which was a joy to  behold.  This led to a scene in a doctor’s office in which Larry was being purposefully obnoxious and I could barely recover between hilarious moments; I couldn’t stop laughing.

Anyway, I’d better stop now or I’ll end up transcribing the whole episode.  One of the funniest TV shows I’ve seen in years.

Russell Howard’s Good News: BBC 3 (R 22nd Oct W 24th Oct)

It might be more apt if this was called Russell Howard’s News Burp,  not that you should read that as a criticism.  It was a pretty funny look back at the week’s news and the jokes came  thick and fast, so you could soon recover if there was one you didn’t like.  I don’t have a lot more to say on it, I mainly just wanted to make my smug TV Burp comparison.

Design for Life: BBC2 (R 19th Oct W 25th Oct)

It seems to be weeks and weeks since I last watched this, but in reality it can only be 13 days at the most.  Anyway…

It was the final episode and there are jut two contestants left: Ilsa, with her flamingo sculpture walking aid, and Mike, with his magnetic cutlery.  Over the weeks, neither has had an easy ride from Starck; Mike was even eliminated at one point and was only saved by the protestations of Ilsa and another of the students.  They both seemed to really knuckle down in the last few weeks and they both finally managed to impress Starck.  The result was very close, but Ilsa just pipped Mike at the post.

To be honest, I don’t know how much we’ve really learnt about design over the weeks but that doesn’t really matter.  The important part is that Starck emerged as a great television personality.  He’s a genuinely world renowned designer but he’s also irritable,  harsh, demanding, strange and funny.  When it came to announcing the overall winner he produced the traditional envelope and pulled out…another envelope.  He then revealed that the second envelope was empty and he said:  ’It’s not surprising.  I just asked for two envelopes.’

You can’t quite imagine Alan Sugar pulling a practical joke at the climax of The Apprentice.

Life: ITV3 (R 23rd Oct W 27th Oct)

It was the last ever episode of the police drama and we saw yet another shift in tone as it turned in to an all-out action flick.  The lovely Dani Reese had been kidnapped by the evil Roman Nebekov, and Charlie and his Crew (pun intended) pulled out all the stops to save her.  This was the resolution to the conspiracy that ran through the whole series and that had led Crews to be falsely imprisoned for murder.  It was satisfying that they managed to tie up all the loose ends.  Kind of.  I can’t help but think that I mustn’t have been paying attention at some point during the season as I wasn’t entirely clear on all the details of what had happened.  I got the gist though.

The ending was nicely done as Crews dealt with being kidnapped by Nebekov in the most simple, almost zen-like, way imaginable.  I can imagine that some people might think it was a bit of a cop out, but I think it was a great way for the show to end (I won’t say what it was, just in case you haven’t seen it yet).  We also ended with the bond between Crews and the usually slightly antagonistic Reese being made made explicit in a touching but subtle way.

All in all, I’ve enjoyed the series for what it was, but it’s not going to leave a gaping hole in my life.

Peep Show: Channel 4 (R 23rd Oct W 28th Oct)

Yet another final episode as the sixth series of one of my favourite sitcoms came to an end.  I thought I’d better mention it as its one of my favourite shows, but, weirdly, I was a bit underwhelmed by the episode.  I don’t know if it’s because I was tired, and not really in the mood, or if it was genuinely under par.

Jeremy had to deal with his lesbian lover’s impending wedding (not to him), and Mark lied about passing his driving test, in order to placate Sophie.  It sounds like a classic Peep Show plot, but, somehow, it all seemed a bit flat.  That’s not to say that it wasn’t funny, because it was.  I just wish I could have given it a more enthusiastic send off.

Tida sent this British reality show to me. It inspires us all to be better design thinkers and problem solvers. Even though it relates to packaging specifically, it’s universal in its message. The series is only six one-hour episodes. Enjoy!

Do not adjust your set – the dizzying image on the front cover of icon 077 is a real building. It’s Chiaki Arai’s extraordinary Ofunato Civic Centre: part labyrinth, part cliff face, part Piranesian fantasy, all concrete. Not bad for an architect who almost gave up architecture. Similarly outlandish but on a completely different scale is MAD’s Hutong Bubble – a silver blob clinging to the side of a house in Beijing. Saviour of traditional Chinese urbanism or glorified outhouse? It’s actually both.

Also in the November issue, fashion designer Aitor Throup tells us about the inspiration he gets from the streets and the psychological advantage that the England football team is going to get from wearing his kits. And we explore the sudden revival of ornamentation in architecture – is this the inevitable decadence that comes from using digital tools we don’t know what to do with, or the welcome end of the minimalist stranglehold on taste? LaCie have teamed up with french designer Philippe Starck on their latest line of external hard drives. The 2mm of aluminum casing prevents the LaCie Starck from overheating while being tough enough to take knocks on the go. A 1TB desktop version has also been released in the Starck collection.
