Genial que inviten al Mago Philippe Stark a torturar y desarrollar productos y estrategias con gente joven diseñadora. Bien escogido el nombre “design for life”.

Sacado del Sorry Zorrito, revista de talentos nacionales. Que también se merecen un reconocimiento por nadar en estas aguas mansas (siempre negativas para la creación) y generar oleaje creativo.

Este es el penúltimo capítulo, ya solo le quedan 4 diseñadores y extrañamente le gusta el diseño más cercano a lo que generalmente diseña él. Bueno, que se le va a hacer, pasa hasta en las mejores familias y en las peores universidades. Está bien, es cierto que es el más interesante, pero los demás quedan casi que descartados.

Algo interesante de ver es como algunos hacen presentaciones de chicos de diseño I, mejor dicho, al haber presión algunos vuelven a su zona de comfort y hasta hacen collages y llenan de papelitos la presentación. Otros se pegan la hablada larga y terminan recibiendo un tremendo…”-this is bullshit-”…Que en general muchos profesores en la universidad lo piensan, pero que se lo callan para no herir susceptibilidades.

Bueno, hay que esperar al final y a que lo programen en algún canal en Cable (para verlo con letritas en español)

Es el primer Reality que me cae bien…aunque uno siempre termina viendo “Big Brother” mexicano y el de Fashion también lo veo, me caía muy bien el loco del cuello tatuado…bueno, basta de intimidades jaaaja

El de los Superhéroes era otro de rigor, aunque era medio triste o tonto…Pero era Stan Lee y se le perdona todo…

The second young designer I spoke to this morning was chic Parisienne Olivia Decaris. Olivia has a design CV to die for – with over seven years studying both in her native France and most recently at the RCA.

The work that Olivia displayed at Tent London’s Talent Zone is a prime example of a designer reaching maturity. The inspiration behind Olivia’s pieces came from feeling insecure in a large city. After lengthy research, Olivia discovered that people feel most secure in small spaces. This led Olivia to create three private spaces intended for dining, sleeping and working. The spaces work as life sized hanging lampshades that envelop the people inside to comfort and protect them.

One might worry that these tiny spaces could be unpleasantly claustrophobic, but these special spaces are surprisingly calming. It really is quite ingenious that this concept can transform any impersonal room into an intimate and personal space.

Although Olivia enjoyed the Tent London experience she was underwhelmed by the quality of work on display. The only element of the show she praised was mydeco’s Talent Zone which stood out for its fresh and interesting work. Olivia insists that in order to make an impact at an event like Tent London, you need to exhibit a thoroughly finished product and be prepared to chat enthusiastically with the public.

Before meeting Sir Terence Conran and Philippe Stark, Olivia hoped she would gain some useful professional advice, talk about future collaboration and potentially make some future contacts. With her confident attitude and original concepts, I’m vouching that Olivia Decaris will go far.

There’s an extra-special buzz in the air at mydeco this morning. We’ve all been cleaning up our desks and trying to look our very best because Sir Terence Conran and Philippe Stark are in the office! These days all architects are sustainability-minded, but we’d like a drum roll for the Arte Charpentier Architects who are the very first group to build an entirely energy positive office building. Déjà on parle de la bûche de Noël!!!!!!! Le temps passe trop vite c’est pas possible.

Fidèle à sa tradition, la maison Lenôtre a cette année fait appel au couturier Kenzo Takada. Il succède aux créations d’Hubert de Givenchy en 2008, de Karl Lagerfeld en 2007, de Philippe Stark en 2006, de Lolita Lempicka en 2005, de Nathalie Rykiel en 2004, de Jean Paul Guerlain en 2002 et de Jacques Garcia en 2001.

La bûche de Noël imaginée par Kenzo est baptisée Rêve. Le dessert a été élaboré en collaboration avec Guy Krenzer, Chef Exécutif et Directeur de la Création Lenôtre, et Patrick Scicard, Président du Directoire.

La bûche de Noël se compose de trois rouleaux qui représentent des bambous, élément de décoration très apprécié par les Japonais. Même si les couleurs dominantes sont le noir, le vert et l’or, le couturier n’a pas omis de choisir le blanc et le rouge pour symboliser l’esprit de Noël.

Le premier rouleau est un biscuit moelleux aux amandes avec une mousse aux marrons qui révèle un coeur de meringue. Dans le second, on y retrouve de la châtaigne et un confit d’orange. Enfin, dans le dernier rouleau se trouve un biscuit moelleux à la pâte d’azuki, une pâte de haricots rouges, et une bavaroise à la vanille Bourbon.

Cette bûche pour huit à dix personnes sera disponible du 18 au 25 décembre dans les boutiques Lenôtre et pourra être réservée dès le 9 décembre au prix de 98€.

Estava demorando. Depois de tantos reality shows para descobrir o aprendiz, a próxima top model, o melhor fotógrafo, o grande estilista e por aí vai, chegou a vez dos designers.

A BBC colocou no ar este ano um reality, no estilo de O Aprendiz, dedicado a encontrar o melhor designer, comandado pelo incensado designer de produto, o francês Philippe Stark.

Com seis episódios, o programa Design for Live, pré selecionou doze designers ingleses para participarem da competição, convivendo e trabalhando em Paris por dois meses. Os participantes recebem tarefas de projetos reais e serão eliminados um a um, o selecionado final ganhará um estágio de seis meses no estúdio de Stark.

Leurs bannières fleurissent un peu partout, leurs mailings pleuvent, leurs vidéos tournent sur la toile. Les conférences ont ouvert un marché plutôt prospère. Elles combattent à coup de peoples recrutés à des millions d’euros, font payer leur accès très très cher et ne laissent en général pas d’autres traces que le mal de crâne qui vous ravage le lendemain matin.

Parmi les conférences au concept original, commençons par les Pecha Kucha. Imaginées au Japon par des designers (sans doute un peu trop obnubilés par la contrainte ceux-là…), ces présentations durent 6 minutes et 40 secondes, pas plus, soit 20 images et 40 secondes par image. Un peu dans cette veine, comment ne pas parler de TED, spécialisé dans les présentations d’une vingtaine de minutes (rarement plus) sur des sujets aussi divers qu’intéressants… Tous les grands sont passés par la scène de TED, depuis Tim Berners Lee à Al Gore (son speech de Une vérité qui dérange est un spin-off d’une préz TED) en passant par Philippe Stark ou Sergei Brin. TED existe à Paris depuis quelques mois, allez jeter un coup d’oeil à leur groupe Facebook.

Viennent ensuite des conférences qui ressemblent plus ou moins à des salons/petits-déjeuners/des semaines thématiques. Parmi les françaises les plus célèbres, il y a Le Web organisé par l’omniprésent Loïc Le Meur mais aussi Buzz the Brand dont la profession se gargarise en ce moment, et puis plein d’autres manifestations dont le but affiché est de réseauter et siffler des coupes gratuitement… Finalement établir un panorama exhaustif va être un peu long. Le plus important, c’était de vous parler de TED !

The Vanishing Bar

It got off to a bad start. I entered The Bazaar with a hangover, bumped straight into an ex that makes my skin crawl, the table wasn’t ready, and we were shuffled off to a bar with a 10-foot barricade of surgically enhanced Hollywood monstrosities. I didn’t have the energy to push my way through the crowd so I just hovered while two of my friends went out for a cigarette to kill time. Granted, the chaotic, Philippe Stark-designed bazaar provided the ultimate distraction while we waited to be seated. The juxtaposition of the bar, patisserie, two dining areas, and a Moss’ retail counter – where you can purchase any of the random, protruding monuments in the SLS Hotel lobby (if you have a gazillion dollars to spare) – are catered to the restaurant’s ADD crowd. I prided myself on being the first to discover the portable liquid nitrogen-prepared caiphirinia bar, but, by the time my friends had all congregated and agreed to try a cocktail, it had vanished.

The compartmentalized chaos reminded me of a train station during rush hour – where you have to relentlessly fight through the mayhem to catch your train. There was an underlying sense of organization – albeit a vague one. The delay felt like it was intended to force guests to explore the museum-like premises – which it did – and the bill somehow follows customers as they wonder through the hustle and bustle.

Things didn’t get any better when we were seated on a rock-hard bench that immediately transported me back to the dreaded days of British boarding school meals. Our chirpy waitress came over and politely asked if this was our first time at the restaurant, to which the guy placed next to me flippantly responded: “No, it’s my last.” Once she had walked away with our drink orders, he murmured, “After this I’m going across the street to get Korean barbeque [at Woo Lae Oak].”

“Why?”

“So I can get a proper meal.”

Great!

Caiphirinia Sorbet

My anxiety was not alleviated when the menu arrived and I was confronted with more kinds of tapas than I’ve ever seen in my life. One side is listed under Rojo (traditional tapas) and the other under Blanca (modern tapas). Seeing as I am the ultimate victim of both food envy and indecision, my poor hungover brain had a mental breakdown. I could have ordered the set menu – but I’m way too much of a masochist to choose the easy option.

The portable nitrogen bar came to the rescue and we were whisked up frozen caiphirinias at the table. They are prepared using pre-made cachaça-based mix, which is stirred in a bowl of liquid nitrogen and served frozen, much like a margarita but even more potent as there’s no ice involved. The sorbet is then garnished with edible flowers and a spoon to devour it with. One mouthful went straight to my head but I immediately had to have another. Yummee!

Olive Bombs

The Spanish chef, José Andrés, is a molecular gastronomy wizard who trained under some of the best chefs in Barcelona before venturing across the pond to conquer the culinary scene in Washington D.C. and, now, L.A. He has found imaginative ways to transform banal ingredients into culinary masterpieces and, conversely, gourmet delights into conventional dishes – with a twist. I mean, how extraordinary can a “Philly cheesesteak” and jamón plate possibly be? You’d be surprised.

Back to the food…. The waiter produced a jar of olives and proceeded to place four of them on a row of spoons so meticulously he reduced a middle-aged man into a fit of giggles. I popped one in my mouth to see what all the fuss over a green olive was about – and my eyes nearly popped out when it exploded with liquid. The olive was actually a gelatinous skin filled with olive essence and olive oil: an invention by Andrés’ former trainer, Ferran Andrià of El Bulli, one of the world’s most famous and influential restaurants. This explained the waiter’s ridiculous precision and made my hysterical friend laugh even harder as it burst in his mouth. In spite of the hoo-ha, the olive bomb actually tasted amazing, exactly how a perfect olive should taste but in liquid form. The dish was served alongside a plate of real olives stuffed with anchovies to emphasize the contrast.

Candy Floss Foie Gras Lollypop

I had a mini air bread sandwich with mildly salty sea urchin and avocado, combining two of the most buttery non-dairy foods. It was to-die-for but a bit too adventurous for anyone else at my table, and too rich for me to attempt the last of the three bites. My friend ordered a “lollypop” stick of candy floss- (a.k.a cotton candy) and corn nut-coated fois gras, which she raved about but I only appreciated from a distance.

Guacamole-Filled Jicama Pouches

My favorite dish was the guacamole-filled pouches made of paper-thin jicama adorned with micro cilantro and Fritos. I love fresh guacamole any day but the avocados they used were perfect: there was a hint of spice and the jicama and corn-chip strip provided just the right diversity of flavor and texture, even though I would never have thought of combining them like this. I also loved the avocado-wrapped, melt-in-your-mouth tuna ceviche roll; sea scallops in thick, smokey Romesco sauce; the tastiest sautéed wild mushrooms I’ve ever had; and giant garlic shrimp, lightly cooked to perfection. The only disappointment was their brussels sprouts which were too undercooked for my liking and lacked flavor, despite the cloud of lemon-scented foam (which resembled bubbly washing up liquid).

For dessert, I skeptically ordered the waitress’ recommendation: hot chocolate mousse with pear sorbet and salty hazlenut praline. I was craving chocolate but usually don’t like mousse. This was different. It was hot, rich and salty like the molten center of chocolate lava cake. Small pear cubes, salty caramel, and crunchy, mini, dark chocolate balls were mixed into the orgasmic goo. All my favorite flavors and textures in one mouthful. Heaven.

The dishes averaged $10 each and we ordered a couple of bottles of Malbec for $35 each – insanely good value.

Despite the challenging start and unfortunate clientelle, once again food (and alcohol) saved the day!

All that glitters may not be gold but that is the case here.

Nous voilà revenus à l’ère de l’or. De la fièvre acheteuse du “consommer plus” autant pour les gens aisés et les moins aisés, nous revenons à une période qui pronne la sélectivité, l’unique, le rare.

Designers, joailliers, créateurs rivalisent pour proposer des produits exceptionnels. Dans cette optique, tous redonnent à l’or sa place de valeur star.

Alec Wek, vous en saurez plus très bientôt, en est le symbole. Alec est la top Model qui a atteint les sommets tout en gardant sa fraicheur, son aura naturelle, son originalité. Alec c’est la femme noire par excellence qui est restée elle même? qui ne s’est pas laissée corrompre par la célébrité et l’opulence du milieu dans lequel elle évolue. C’est une femme en Or.

Ce magnifique bracelet Spirale  en or rose et diamants bruns, Hermès vaut certainement le prix qui vous sera annoncé. On reconnait là le temps et l’application déployés par les artisans pour donner cette finition parfaite.

Quant à cette manchette Seventies en or jaune, qui pourrait, à moins d’avoir une aversion pour les manchettes, ou pour l’or, dire qu’elle ne mérite pas  que l’on s’arrête chez Dinh Van, ne serait-ce que pour l’admirer ou l’essayer à son poignet. Sinon, Aller visiter le site My Prestigium

Starck est un designer français de 60 ans.

Il a suivi ses études à l’école Nissim de Camondo. Il fonde sa première entreprise en 1968, son objet de prédiliection de l’époque : les objets gonflables.

Puis il s’approche de Pierre Cardin et finit par s’installer en indépendant en 1975 pour le design d’intérieur et le design industriel.

Ensuite, son parcours s’articulera autour des années 80 avec des produits d’usage courant, des meubles individuels produits par des fabricants internationaux.

Et oui,  son génie de l’époque l’a amené à oeuvrer pour Panzani:

En tant que designer prolixe il a donc tout naturellement travaillé dans divers domaines, tous peut être….

Ah, the eternal question: What is cool?

Always followed by: And why have some people/places/things got it while others haven’t?

Are cool and style the same thing?

Are all stylish things cool?

Does something have to be fashionable to be cool? Or is cool about doing your own thing?

Is cool the same as the other indefinable quality we call x-factor? Or can you have that special star something and still be naff?

Is cool passion, authenticity, confidence, lack of effort or all of the above?

How do you know when you’ve got it? How do you know when it’s gone?

Is it something you’re born with? 

Can you acquire it?

Can you buy it?

Can you sell it?

Is it something you can learn to be or does trying result in instant disqualification?

What’s your definition of cool?

Would it be the same as mine?

If it really is indefinable, then how come we all seem to know that those pictured above – Barack Obama, Steve McQueen, Apple’s iPhone, New York, Philippe Stark’s Juicer, Keith Richards, Miles Davis, James Dean, Adidas Shell Toes – all have it. Or maybe you don’t agree that they do.

How important is it anyway?

All my life I’ve been fascinated by the concept of ‘cool’, something you can’t see or touch yet we all instantly recognise, and react favourably to. Cool people/places/things are always popular, always respected, usually successful, invariably admired. Why? What have they got? What do they know? Can they themselves define it?

That’s what I’m intending to find out with The Definition Of Cool, my own personal journey in search of that magic formula. But first I need your help. I need to know your definition of cool. Who are the people, places and things that you think have it? And how would you put it into words? Don’t be too clever. I’m trying to get together a solid cast of characters I can go and interview – or in the case of products, places and dead people, those who know/knew them well. So don’t be afraid to be too obvious – obscure may be cool, but for our purposes it won’t get us very far. Pick people, places and things which are widely known and recognised, and tell me why you think they’re cool, along with your own definition, in the comments. Once I’ve got a sufficiently cool long list, I’ll be running a series of polls here on the blog to narrow it down to a short list of interviews for the book so don’t forget to sign-up to the mailing list here or subscribe to the RSS feed here, so you won’t miss your chance to vote.

Me hizo gracia porque sin tener nada que ver, ambos tienen un detalle en común, y es la integración del cuarto de baño en el dormitorio. Es una solución que últimamente se está utilizando mucho en este tipo de establecimientos.  Los dos hoteles son fantásticos, pero creo que hay que tener cuidado con este tipo de recursos.

Otra habitación con el baño integrado

 La primera vez que  me encontré con algo parecido fue cuando estuve alojada en el hotel Faena de Buenos Aires (interiorista  Philippe Stark) en el año 2005. En realidad, el cuarto de baño  está separado del dormitorio  por un gran tabique de vidrio del que se puede independizar visualmente  corriendo unos pesados cortinones de color rojo en caso de querer aislarse. El resultado, práctico y espectacular.

Curiosamente,  en una obra que realicé en el año 2003 en la que ejecuté un proyecto del conocido arquitecto Carlos Vega,  adoptamos esta solución, pero a lo grande. Baño integrado directamente en el salón de una vivienda, separado por un vidrio transparente sin ningún tipo de elemento que en un momento dado pudiera ocultarlo. El inodoro independiente en cabina y la encimera del baño comunicada a través de otro  vidrio transparente con la encimera de la cocina. Atrevido, fluido y transgresor. ¿El cliente? hombre, muy joven y soltero.

Hay soluciones que por desgracia sólo pueden realizarse con un público concreto. La idea en hoteles, me parece práctica resolviéndolo como se hizo en el Hotel Faena, pero creo que hay que tener mucho cuidado con dejar el baño abierto sin posibilidad de poder tener mayor intimidad en un momento dado. El diseño, por original que sea, nunca debe estar por encima de la funcionalidad. Los espacios además de ser especiales, deben de ser prácticos.

I must be some kind of backwoods girl. Just last week I saw my very first Bond film. Aside from the cars (my dream is to own an Aston Martin) and ridiculously stylish clothes, I have to say I wan’t too impressed. Of course, that was one film of many so I guess I’ll have to give James another chance!

I did get inspired my the oh-so-suave way Mr. Bond handles a gun, which made me think of another guru of style, Mr. Karl Lagerfield (a.k.a. Chanel icon and snazzy dresser extraoridinaire). Here’s a peek at my sleekest efforts at style!

L’architettura contemporanea, volendo segnare il periodo contemporaneo con il superamento temporaneo del movimento moderno da parte del postmoderno, sembra dominata, non tanto dalla figura dell’archistar, le cui realizzazioni negli ultimi dieci anni non superano lo 0,4% delle totali, quanto dalla figura dell’architetto-artista, ossia quel personaggio, il quale, convinto di aprire ponti tra una generica qualsiasi arte ed architettura, prende le mosse per il proprio progetto ispirandosi a questa o quell’opera d’arte, a questo o quel linguaggio artistico. Questo processo avrà quindi bisogno di riferimenti visivi più o meno espliciti, prestandosi all’imbarazzante produzione di ingenui oggetti tradotti a scale immaginarie, considerate adeguate alla situazione. Secondo questo approccio, diventa lecito, ad esempio, ricreare per un’agenzia pubblicitaria un binocolo alto 20 metri, oppure inserire nel cuore di Tokyo un’enorme tazza di birra con relativa schiuma dorata. Appropriato per la sede degli uffici di un’azienda produttrice di Birra.

Ma se è pur vero che Ghery nella sua attività ha vantato collaborazioni eccellenti, in primis con l’amico Claes Oldenburg, questo non voglia dire che egli non abbia creato architetture dall’influenza e dalla portata probabilmente ancora non percepibile in tutta la loro potenza. Lo stesso Philippe Stark ha dato ad una intera branca del design, introducendo un’elemento ironico altamente personale. Ma forse proprio questa posizione, che preferisce il paradigma di Caos a quello di Metodo, ha reso possibile la caduta nelle pozze del manierismo ludico. Caduta ancora più facile se chi a prestarsi a questa faciloneria della progettazione di macro-oggetti è un progettista con una padronanza blanda dei propri mezzi. Pare proprio che in tempi in cui sembra che la maggior parte degli studi sentano il bisogno di appropriarsi dello status di artista, rifiutare l’artisticità della propria opera sia diventato un valore aggiunto da non sottovalutare. Ed in questo quadro rientra un architetto che, nonostante si sia mosso in zone assai più estreme di quelle in cui naufragano Philippe Stark e Frank Ghery e nonostante la sua provenienza da campi strettamente più pertinenti a quelli artistici che non architettonici, sembra aver trovato una strada in grado di non dissolvere l’architettura nel puro ludismo preferendo approfondire un tema in particolare, ossia quello del rapporto tra azione e percezione. Ovviamente mi sto riferendo al solito Lars Spuybroek, team leader dei Nox, il quale esso stesso dichiara in una intervista di Ludovica Tramontin:

[...] l’adozione di un processo interamente basato sulla morfogenesi non è abbastanza in architettura, non garantisce che il risultato si architettonico.

Osservazione paradossale, se la consideriamo espressa da uno degli autori maggiormente accusati di usare metodologie svilenti l’architettura, le quali si risolverebbero in puri virtuosismi formali. Accuse che provengono tra l’altro dallo stesso fronte che esalta invece i risultati prima criticati. Ma le critiche in questione sono facilmente contrattaccabili, derivanti esse da una non perfetta comprensione delle intenzioni. Se fosse il contrario sarebbe piuttosto facile rendersi conto che ciò che si sta sperimentando è un diverso modo di vivere lo spazio, affondando in una topologia che non si limita ad avvolgere i fruitori, ma rende continuo anche il rapporto sensoriale di questi con i propri gesti e le reazioni che l’architettura offre, dandosi non come un oggetto passivo, ma capace di entrare nella sfera percettiva dei suoi ospiti, afattandosi ad essi. Ed ecco così che il continuum tra azione e percezione creano un legame certamente più stretto con un’arte che di certo non tenta di risolversi nel figurativo, ma nemmeno si nega alla scapezzatura, all’errore volontario, figlio di un edonismo spudorato. È un rapporto probabilmente involontario, ma che indaga in maniera ceramente più profondo gli stessi campi del post-umano, dell’arte interattiva e della net-art, senza andare a ripetere esperienze già avute, e quindi offrendosi con la pretesa di dire qualcosa di nuovo. E non è un caso se Kas Oosterhuis, nella collaborazione con Ilona Lénárd, artista che ha da sempre lavorato nei campi del digitale ad avvicinarsi a conclusioni simili, la ricerca di un riversamento della fruizione nell’esperienza, per vie completamente diverse. Probilmente, esiste una avanguardia che silenziosamente, intende aspettare prima di godere di una sterile ufficialità.

Today (May 14th, 2008) I received Tashen’s Spring/Summer 2008 catalog in the mail and I leafed through their latest books for sale and came across a new book that struck my fancy. It’s called “THE BIG PENIS BOOK”. It has over 400 illustrations on the fascinating phallus. For the men, don’t miss out on “THE BIG BOOK OF BREASTS”. Apparently it’s been a bust out success. Frequently I see sold out copies of Tashen’s book for sale on Ebay and they’re tripled in price – so don’t miss out!

Design thinking is all the rage. I like it too.  Instead of thinking about what is “right” or “wrong”, we think about how we will use something and when and where we will use it.

Designers though, aren’t that keen on design!

Magnolia is a small bar located on Lake St in Pasadena, California.  From the outside, you can’t see anything but a big bouncer standing on a quite street.  But once you walk in, you look into the seating area through white pane windows.  And as you walk to the back, there is an open courtyard with a bar in the back.  The courtyard has a real tree that hangs over a few small tables.  But it’s beautiful to look up at the sky from that little 15′ x 15′ outdoor patio area.   There are two seating areas that look out toward the patio.  They have long sofas and ottomans for your to relax in. 

This modern lounge is a little hide-a-way in Pasadena.  It is a fun place to chill with your friends.  The music is loud enough to hear, but you don’t have to scream at people.  The furniture is stylish and fun.  The tables and chairs are clear.  Glass tables and plastic chairs called “Louis Ghost Chairs” by Philippe Stark, all of which matches the delicate atmosphere. (*Thanks Brian*)  The pastic chairs are rather classy, not cheesy or cheap in any way.  The venue also caters to large groups (as long as you make reservations ahead of time.)

Food: Bayou Pizza, Cornflake Fried Chicken, Magnolia Salad … all highly recommended.

Drinks: Magnolia Secret! YUMMY!

Attire is classy.  Don’t go dressing all club-ish because you will look out of place.  Even guys are dressed nice!  So be smart about it.
