Jeder weiss es eigentlich, und dennoch ist man nicht immer davor gefeit: E-mails schreiben, Beziehungen beenden oder wichtige (Wirtschafts-)Entscheidungen treffen, wenn man emotional sehr aufgebracht ist, ist nicht in jedem Fall zu empfehlen. Sowohl Philips als auch ABN Amro sind sich darin einig. Nun haben der Technikkonzern und die Bank ein System entwickelt, mit dem der emotionale Status des Anwenders ermittelt werden soll, um ihn vor unbedachten Investitionen zu schützen.

Emotionen bändigen

Das “EmoBracelet”, ein spezielles Armband, misst über Hautsensoren den emotionalen Stressfaktor seines Trägers und zeigt diesen mit bunten Leuchtdioden an. Blinken diese zu wild, sollte er von weitreichenden Entscheidungen absehen oder zumindest noch einmal darüber schlafen. Die Signale des “EmoBracelets” lassen sich auch auf die so genannte “EmoBowl” übertragen. Diese dekorative Schüssel zeigt ebenfalls mit bunten Lichtern an, ob der Anwender lieber die Finger vom beabsichtigen Investitionsentscheid.

Später ein Instrument für die Finma?

Vielleicht wäre es ja für die eidgenössische Finanzmarktaufsicht einen Gedanken wert, zusätzlich zu den in dieser Woche erlassenen Bonus-Regeln, die betroffenen Manager ans “EmoBracelets” und die “EmoBowl” anzuschliessen resp. an die Leine zu nehmen. Bonus bekommt am Ende nur derjenige Manager bei dem nie die ‘roten Lämpli’ geleuchtet haben. Hart, aber fair – und wirklich messbar! Doch einen Haken hat die Idee zurzeit noch: Das “Rationalizer”-Set kann derzeit leider noch nicht käuflich erworben werden – es wird erst in den nächsten Jahren marktreif sein. Aktuell wird nach Investoren gesucht. Ob die auch den ‘Emotionstest’ vorher durchlaufen müssen?

Oleme tänaseks läbi käinud pea kõik Tartu suuremad poed, kus valgusteid müüakse. Nii üheskoos kui eraldi. Lugenud muuhulgas ka meie blogi tänuväärt kommentaare, tahtsime siiski proovida, mida uut meile kauplustes räägitakse. Kas kauplused on täna valmis nõustama ostjat tänavalt? Millised on teie kogemused?

Kauplus nr.1 : Ehitustarvete kauplus. Sattun sinna nädalavahetusel, kus samas ka suur kampaania käimas. Seega palju rahvast. Lampide osakonnas on üks noormees, kellel käed tööd täis ja kuskilt otsast ei näi ta soovivat minuga suhelda mingite elektripirnide teemal. Pöördun murega letimüüa poole, kes kahetsedes vastab, et tema küll ei tea. Proovib ise telefoni teel lambiosakonna noormehelt küsida, kuid saab ka korvi. Lõpuks leiab ta mulle ühe tapeediosakonna töötaja, kes ka pirnidest üht teist teadma peaks. Ja ongi nii. Teab kus riiulitelt pirnid asuvad ja oskab karpidelt soravalt lugeda sinna kirjutatud numbreid. Leian seitsme erinevat pirnide tootja toodangut: Govena, Osram, Feron, Kanlux, BRE-Light, Megaman, Tungsram.

Kolm toredat aspekti sellest kauplusest:

1)      Letitöötaja oli üdini positiivne ja väga abivalmis ning püüdis mulle igati toeks olla. Kuigi tunnistas, et oli ennist soovitanud ühele ostjale mingit juhet, vaatamata sellele, et pole tegelikult üldse selle ala spets ning ei tea kas see juhe üldse ostjale sobilik on.

2)      Kohtasin vanemat abielupaari väga sarnase murega ning meil oli väga palju rääkida, vahetada kogemusi ja läbielamisi seoses kompaktluminofoorpirnide (lumipirn) kasutamisega. Võin kinnitada, et nemad olid väga skeptilised enamuse lumipirnide kvaliteedi osas.

3)      Kuigi kaupluses ei olnud spetsiaalset pirnide proovimise stendi, oli teisest osakonnast tulnud müüja meelsasti nõus minema lampide osakonda, et näidata, kuidas (säästu)halogeen ühes laualambis põleb.

Kauplus nr. 2 : Suur ehituspood. Pirnide valik suhteliselt kesine. Samas toodangut lausa kuuelt eritootjalt: Brilum, Kanlux, Gelighting, Tungsram, Wodmeng, Feron. Ühe müüjaga saan ka kontakti. Küsimusele millist pirni mu äsja läbi läinud 100W hõõglambi asemele tema soovitaks ei leia just väga professionaalset vastust. Sukeldume taas koos pirnide karpidelt lugema, mida huvitavat sinna kirjutatud on. Kaks üllatavat asja:

1)      Kaupluses on elektripirnid ühes kastis hunnikus koos nagu odava väljamüügi ajal riidepoes, kus sobrad ja leiad endale sobiva. Samas on näha, et inimesed võtavad meeleldi möödaminnes ka mõne säästuka. Täpselt ei ole aru saada, mis kui palju maksab, kuigi kastiserval hulk hindu olemas.

2)      Kaupluses on üleval selgitav ja abistav tabel eri tüüpi päevavalguslampide kasutamissobivuse kohta erinevates situatsioonides!

Kauplus nr. 3: Ehitustarvete kauplus. Väga meeldivalt eksponeeritud lambid ja pirnid. Lisaks väga suur valik erinevaid tüüpi pirne, kuid samas vaid kolmelt tootjalt: Osram, Kanlux, Megaman. Püüan kinni klienditeenindaja ning siin on tegemist tõelise spetsialistiga. Esimest korda tunnen, kuidas müüjast õhkab tõelist eksperti. Kahju, et jõudsin siia poodi vaid 20 minutid enne sulgemist, seega jääb meie vestlus minu jaoks lühikeseks. Kui olime oma jutu lõpetanud, siis jään veel pirnide leti ette uudistama. Müüja tuleb hetke pärast tagasi ja soovitab, et kui vaja säästupirni osta, siis ostku ikka Osramit. See on võrreldes, teiste täna pakututud variantidega kõige parem ja võid olla kindel, et see mis karbil kirjas vastab ka tegelikkusele. Teiste puhul ei saavat täna veel kindel olla.

Positiivne moment: Suur pirnide stend, kus näha kuidas uued pirnid välja näevad ja millist valgust välja annavad.

Kauplus nr 4:  elektrikaupade pood. Konkreetne soov saada laelühtrile timmer, küünlakujulised halogeenlambid ja veel mõned vidinad. Püüan algul ise stendi ja pirniriiuli abil sotti saada, mida täpselt küsida. Põhiliselt Philipsi pirnid. Olen tunkedes elektrikute vahel ainus naisklient poes. Õnneks peatub minu abiotsiva pilgu peale üks asjalikest müüjatest, kes (nagu hiljem selgub) on müügijuht. Selle mehe  soovituste kuulmiseks on teised inimesed nõus kannatlikult ootama. Saan timmeri ja sobiva katte, kuid E14 sokliga küünlakujulisi halogeene tuleb mõnest lambipoest otsida. Teiste vidinate jaoks pean esmalt tema täpsustavatele küsimustele vastata oskama. See müüja oskas peast vastata enamikule mu küsimustele (kataloogi lappasime ikka ka ) ja pakkus käigu pealt lahendusi. Tõeline proff!

Kauplus nr. 5 : Valik praktiliselt puudub. Müüja tähelepanu saamiseks laulame taas ette oma mure, et 100W pirn läks toas läbi, uut pole võtta, sooviks ka midagi säästlikumat … vastuseks: „Oeh!“. Ja taas sukeldume pirnikarpidelt lahendusi otsima. Kuna see on juba neljas kauplus, siis näen juba ise, et siit „hunnikust“ pole midagi mõistlikku võtta. Valida on selliste firmade toodangu nagu Tungsarm, Feron, SC-saver. Kuna on pühapäev, siis rahvast on vähe ja saame kogu tähelepanu. Meie arutellu sekkub ka üks vanem meesterahvas, kel kindel soov saada uut kiirsüttivat säästupirni. Mõni aeg tagasi olla ta siit poest sellise ostnud ning see oli olnud rohelises karbis, peale kirjutatud ’Fast’. Tema jaoks sobivat lahendust ei leita, samas on meestel omavahel huvitav pirnide teemal rääkida ning koos koolitame ka müüjat. Jõuame jutuga kaasaegsete halogeenpirnideni ja lülitame sisse poes oleva LED-lampide stendi. Müüjale head aega soovides, saame tema siira tänu osaliseks, et olime talle palju uut ja huvitavat elektripirnidest rääkinud.

Kes peaks aitama teadmatuses ostjat, kui müüjal pole füüsiliselt aega või tegelikult ka kompetentsi? (Paberist infovoldikud “pirnimaailmade” juures ei oleks just säästuteema jätk, kuid vanemale generatsioonile ehk lihtsam variant.) Kuidas teha lihtsamaks mitmes asjas standardiseerimata valgusmaailmas orienteerumine, kui mängu tulevad ka sellised lumilampide puhul üliolulised muutujad nagu keskkonna temperatuur ja lülituste sagedus? Pirni kuju ja sokkel on veel need kõige lihtsamad asjad seal juures… Siin on potentsiaali kasvõi arvutimänguks, kus tuleks teha õigeid lambivalikuid pööningust keldrini ja sauna, garaaži kaudu õue.

Kokkuvõtteks: kui ostad uue valgusti, pakutakse poes selle juuede sobilikke hõõglampe. Kui tahad säästlikumat varianti, pead ise täpselt teadma, mida ja millisest poest küsida. Kui head nõu tahad kuulda, mine poodi siis, kui seal on vähe rahvast.

Letzthin hat mich jemand gefragt, warum man denn jetzt auch noch Internet auf dem Fernseher brauche – dafür hätte man doch den Computer? Ich entgegnete: Warum nicht? Denn: Wer hätte vor ein paar Jahren gedacht, dass wir berührungsgesteuerte Handys toll finden und uns unterwegs Podcasts anschauen werden? Die Bedürfnisse ändern sich u.a. auch mit den Technologien, die verfügbar sind. Deshalb, finde ich, ist es bereits heute überhaupt nicht fern von Gut und Böse, auch auf dem Fernseher das Internet zu nutzen. Ich persönlich schätze beispielsweise die diversen Zusatznutzen von Philips NetTV:

• Da kann ich mir auf Cineman oder Kino.de kurz den Trailer der Päpstin anschauen – anschliessend weiss ich, ob ich meiner Frau diesen Kinobesuch zusagen soll oder nicht.
• Viel genutzt ist bei uns zu Hause auch das Internetradioportal tunin.fm – Lounge-Stimmung per FlatTV sozusagen.
• Mein kleiner Sohn findet es Klasse, zur Abwechslung auch mal Barbapapa oder Shaun, das Schaf auf youtube - aber in voller Bildschirmgrösse – zu geniessen.
• Praktisch sind auch aktuelle Wetter- und Pistenberichte, oder wenn man kurz vor dem ins Auto steigen noch schnell ins TomTom-Portal geht, um nachzuschauen, ob auf der geplanten Fahrstrecke Stau herrscht.
• Attraktiv ist auch die zeitunabhängige Nutzung von Internet-TV-Angeboten wie jenes von Arte – schöne Dokus, auch im Vollbildmodus.
• Und für’s nächste Familienfest habe ich auch schon etwas auf Lager: Karaoke-Singen vor dem FlatTV – ob ich dafür jemanden beigeistern kann, weiss ich allerdings nicht…

Ich meine, Internet auf dem Fernseher, auch Philips NetTV, wird das Surfen auf dem Computer nicht ersetzen – soll es auch nicht. Aber es ergänzt die Fernsehnutzung doch bereits mit einigen spannenden, zusätzlichen Möglichkeiten. Und fertig entwickelt sind ja diese Plattformen ohnehin noch nicht. Neben zusätzlichen Dienstangeboten wird auch die Philips-Lösung in nächster Zukunft noch weiter ausgebaut und ergänzt werden – speziell auch mit vergleichbaren lokalen Angeboten wie local.ch oder foodarena.ch. Und Verbesserungsmöglichkeiten sehe auch ich noch: Manchmal wünschte ich mir z.B. die Möglichkeit eine Tastatur anzuschliessen – bloggen würde dann auch ganz einfach via FlatTV von der Hand gehen.

Rob Tarlton, a 21-year-old aerospace engineering student from the University of Illinois, USA, flew over to Britain last week with his twin brother Tom. Both were finalists in the Philips Driving Academy competition to drive a Williams F1 car, and Rob progressed through a day at Palmer Sport and a session in the Williams simulator to become the overall winner.

We had the chance to chat with him during his prize day, at the point when he had been out in a F3 car but was yet to attempt his F1 drive. Here’s what he had to say.

BritsOnPole: Tell us how you arrived here.

Rob Tarlton: For a long time I have been a big fan of Formula One and, at the beginning of the summer, one of my friends saw this competition and let my brother and I know that Philips was sponsoring a competition in which you could get a chance to drive a Williams F1 car. After that I looked at what it took and I entered the competition and tried my best.

BoP: Did you have several goes to push your laptime up, or was it a one-off effort?

RT: You could do as much as you wanted, so it was pretty much who wanted to spend the most time. I figured it was a good investment of my time.

BoP: It really is a thing that very few people can say they have done. How do you feel now?

RT: Right now, I feel really excited. I don’t really feel that nervous, I want to try my best and say safe. At this point I just want to enjoy the ride. I guess now that the competition has ended it has been a lot more relaxing. In the simulator and at Palmer Sport they were looking at the data to make sure you drive clean and do your best.

BoP: What was it like when you heard your name called out?

RT: It was all a bit unreal. I was really excited but, being announced as one of the three finalists you also had to stay focused because you were going to the simulator and it was only the beginning. But then, being announced as the final winner, that was very relieving, and very exciting. I was very happy.

BoP: We had a chat with Jeff who runs the simulator. He was extremely complimentary about all three finalists, but said one of the things that swung it in your favour was your ability to interpret instructions. Can you see that in yourself?

RT: Actually, I stated this earlier, that I felt my largest advantage was that… I like to think that I receive input well and re-implement it into my performance. I would say that it’s much like any other sport. To be coached is the quickest way you can improve.

BoP: Do you do any racing?

RT: Formula Student – we go through the entire process of designing, building, testing and eventually competing with it, so I do have some experience competing as a driver for Formula SAE, or Formula Student.

BoP: You’re going to have some bragging rights when you get home.

RT: Oh yes, I know a lot of jealous people.

BoP: Silverstone is one of the classic F1 tracks. What’s it like to come here and drive it?

RT: To drive at Silverstone, as you see it on TV with all the races happening here, to finally be here and driving an F1 car on the circuit is just… even though it’s the National circuit it’s still outstanding, one of a kind. To be coming through the stadium part from the drivers’ seat was pretty unreal. I can’t wait to see what it will be like in the F1 car.

BoP: And you brought a spare… your twin brother Tom?

RT: Just in case something was to happen. Actually, he entered and made it to the top 12 – so we were both here to go to Palmer Sport.

BoP: You said you’ve been a big fan of Formula One growing up – any interest in American racing?

RT: For the most part I follow Formula One. Every race, all the results, and I am a frequent visitor to the Formula One site, I really try to follow all of it. The only American racing I watch is if it’s going on if I happen to turn on the TV so I don’t really follow it, I don’t know many of the drivers, and I think the biggest part of that is the way the regulations are set up and the scale of Formula One. It’s an international competition and not just a national competition and that really adds a unique aspect to it.

After months of preparation and anticipation, it came down to this: one powerful car, one iconic race track and one amateur driver about to go where millions of fans would give their eye teeth to follow.

Except, as this photo gallery shows, there was far more to it than just one man and one machine.

An online game of speed and reflexes, a track assessment day and a series of simulator tests had whittled down the thousands of entrants to one winner and, far from standing alone, he was backed up by a full team from driver coaches to PR handlers.

When Rob Tarlton hit the track in his Williams FW29, he had built up to that moment in a Silverstone Lotus Exige and in a Raikkonen Robertson Racing F3 car.

He’d taken advice from F1 driver Kazuki Nakajima and Superleague pilot Jonathan Kennard.

And, for that morning, he’d been equipped, promoted, managed, interviewed, advised, briefed, debriefed, led around and followed about exactly as if he was the real deal and not a one-shot guest.

Imagine this: instead of watching the British Grand Prix from the safety of your sofa at home, or sat in the Silverstone grandstands with ear protectors and a bacon sarnie, you’re suddenly transported to the pitlane, strapped into a powerful F1 car, and told ‘off you go’.

Reckon you could cope?

Top Gear fans will remember the meal Richard Hammond made of his first few minutes in one of Renault’s race cars – and he had a background in driving high performance cars to help him make the step up in power.

Rob Tarlton, on the other hand, is a 21-year-old aeronautical engineering student at the University of Illinois, a participant in the US side of Formula Student, and an ordinary F1 fan like millions watching on TV.

He’s also the first driver since Scott Speed to stick the Stars and Stripes to the side of a Formula One car and head out to tackle Silverstone’s historic corners.

And he did just fine.

Tarlton was one of a dozen hopefuls from 10 nations who beat 15,000 other entrants to set the fastest times on the internet-based test track created by Williams F1 sponsors Philips as the first stage in their Driving Academy competition.

The winners, who also included Rob’s twin brother Tom, were flown from around the world by Philips to take part in a tough assessment programme aimed at finding which of them could best handle the speed and power of an F1 car at Silverstone.

A day at Palmer Sport saw the 12 tested and tutored in a range of sports cars and open-wheel racers as experienced instructors narrowed them down to the three best drivers. Those three went through to an in-depth training day at the Williams F1 factory.

Head-to-head shoot-outs in the team’s F1 simulator, as used by its drivers to prepare for races, and the experienced eye of technical director Sam Michael eventually selected Tarlton as the winner.

And, on a bright November day that clouded up ominously as the morning progressed, he went to Silverstone to claim his prize: five laps of the National circuit in a Williams FW29, the last breed of Formula One car to feature traction control.

All of the top three contestants got the chance to lap the circuit in a Lotus Exige with Williams driver Kazuki Nakajima beside them as coach. For the top two, that acted as preparation for more laps, this time in a Raikkonen Robertson Formula Three car with former BRDC Young Driver Award shortlistee and Williams tester Jonathan Kennard on hand to provide advice.

For the runner-up, that was the high point of his day. For Tarlton, the 15 laps in the white and pale blue Philips-branded machine was just the warm-up to the main event.

After his first he returned for a swift debrief in the garage with Kennard – himself an ex-Raikkonen Robertson F3 driver – and that team’s engineers.

Kennard had previously been out in the F3 car to set some fairly restrained benchmark laps, providing data so that Tarlton would be able to compare his performance in the different parts of the circuit and understand what areas were ripe for improvement.

All the stats were presented as a series of graphs on a laptop at the back of the garage that allowed him to see instantly how he had fared. Areas earmarked for improvement were the timing of gear changes, on which he was instructed to be more positive, later braking and having the confidence to carry a little more speed through the corners.

The graphs show a characteristic shape when a driver is approaching optimum performance and Tarlton was able to see how his lap data differed from Kennard’s as well as getting advice on how to minimise the differences.

And the 21-year-old – chosen as winner after demonstrating the greatest ability to respond to advice and coaching – learned from the data. By the time he had finished his stint in the F3 car he was lapping almost as fast as Kennard had done.

And then, with a previously clear blue sky rapidly clouding up, it was suddenly time for him to drive the F1 car.

Nakajima said: “We went out with him in the Lotus car and I just told him the way of driving it. He had a good feel for the car although he struggled a little bit with the shifting – but that’s going to be much easier in the F1 car so I’m sure he will be fine.

“The speed difference between the F3 car, the Lotus and the F1 car will be massive, so that will be a big challenge. Nerves can be an issue and when you get nervous you just lose control of the brain.

“There is a lot of stuff you have to go through before you start driving, but I’m sure we can help him. He gets such a short time, my advice to him is just enjoy it.”

Tarlton said: “Driving the Formula 3 car was an amazing experience – it really goes fast and grips well. I am excited to see what the Formula One car is like. As far as pressure goes, I actually feel less pressure now because the competition is over. Now it’s just a matter of enjoying the ride and being safe.”

A pitlane full of Williams and Raikonnen Robertson crew, sponsors’ staff, media, the unsuccessful finalists, and some passing visitors from a Nissan experience day watched him venture out onto the empty track.

Less than a minute later he was screaming down the pit straight, first lap complete, while the Williams support team nodded approvingly at each other to see how quickly he had come up to speed as we all listened to the sound of him roaring round the national circuit in less than a minute per lap.

And all too soon afterwards he was pulling up in the garage again, job done, to be greeted with a round of applause and a congratulatory handshake from Nakajima.

“It’s a dream come true and a hell of a lot of fun,” he said afterwards. “To drive the car was an incredible experience. I never imagined that I would be over here in the UK driving a Formula One car. Certainly beats doing homework.

“Being able to come out and drive one of these high-performance cars is a dream come true. I never would have thought that, going down the path that I have career-wise, I would ever have a chance to sit in one of these cars and take a couple laps round the track. To drive the simulator was a great experience, but to actually come here and sit in one of these race cars is just amazing.”

Of all the aspects of driving the F1 car, it was the physical extremes that stood out most for him: “The most impressive thing was the acceleration. You could be going at well over 100 mph, hit the gas and accelerate as if you were going from a stop. The car continues to accelerate past the top speed of most average cars. The brakes as well, they give you confidence in going fast.

“The grip was incredible. Coming through the exit there, I was working hard to keep my head off the headrest. It is demanding. I couldn’t imagine going through a full race duration with those forces on your head, just going through turn one was enough. It took a lot of effort just to hold it – I can’t imagine doing the whole circuit over the course of a couple of hours, or driving that car on a full-sized course.”

And with that done, it was time to team up with his fellow finallists for group photos, champagne on the podium, and lunch in the BRDC clubhouse – where you could take turns racing a giant Scalextric set, Williams against McLaren, as a way of coming back down to the real world where Formula One is something only experienced in games and on TV.

Except, for one native Chicagoan, the real world is now a bit different from how it looks to the rest of us.

• Einziger Wehrmutstropfen: Die Fernbedienung – sie sei etwas lumpig geraten. Nun, ein Kritikpunkt, den ich ebenfalls so sehen würde.

I posted last week about Summit’s CEL Manila 2009 that’s happening this October 13-15, 2009 at  The World Trade Center.

Philips si-a inceput activitatea in Romania in jurului anului 1925 iar doi ani mai tarziu, Philips a deschis in Bucuresti prima fabrica de echipamente radio. În anul 2008, Philips, prin distribuitorul sau autorizat în România – Radiusmed – a echipat integral Centrul de Imagistică Medicală Arcadia Iaşi, care a devenit cel mai performant centru de diagnostic din Moldova. La această recunoaştere au contribuit, în egală măsură, dotările tehnice de ultimă generaţie şi pregătirea profesională deosebită a specialiştilor de la Arcadia.
