Purchases are immediately debited to the user’s registered BPI account.

Current merchant partners for the BPI Express Mobile include Phillips and Memo Express, retailer of Nokia mobile phones. Also on board is the Rustan’s Group of Companies. The group is composed by a widespread network of subsidiaries including Rustans’ Supermarket, Rustan Coffee, Stores Specialist, Inc., Starbucks Coffee, Rustan Marketing Corporation, Shopwise, Rustans Specialty Concepts Inc. and Rustan Marketing Specialist, Inc. which carries over 50 brands including Marks & Spencer, Zara, Gap, Debenhams, and Diesel, among others.

House on Monday Nov 23 as they joined over 200 protestors demanding stronger action from the government on climate change.

The three Greens Councillors were arrested after a mass sit-in in front of the entrance to Parliament House in Canberra along with 130 other
people, but released without charge.  They were  seeking meaningful
emission reduction targets of 40% by 2020 and binding agreements in   Copenhagen.

Councillor Bynre  stated, “When I read the latest research which suggests the Arctic icecap  could be completely melted during summer by as soon as 2013, I  realized that before my children even finish school, the planet could
be irreversibly changed. We must have real action now and that’s why I
had to be prepared to be arrested during this peaceful protest”.

“The fact that 130 people from diverse backgrounds were prepared to bearrested reflects the strength of feeling in the community and I wanted to show the politicians in Canberra that ordinary people are prepared to take action to  demand realistic reductions in greenhouse gas pollution so that our community and communities around the world can have a safe future,” commented Greens Councillor Cathy Peters

I got the rest of my inking done yesterday for my half-sleeve tattoo.  Jason Phillips at FTW Tattoo yet again did a great job.  If you’re in the East Bay and looking for a great artist, can’t recommend him enough.  Proof of his great work I’ve posted below in photographic form.

The inside of my arm wasn’t as painful this time, maybe because I twisted the hell out of my ankle in Indiana my last night there and it’s been throbbing ever since.  X-Rays show it’s not broken thankfully.

I joked with Jason that if I wanted to get a full sleeve the rest would have to be an underwater theme since it’s under the boat.  Awesome idea, but I don’t know if the full sleeve is for me, at least at this point in life.  The other arm is open for anything and of course I’ve always toyed with the idea of getting more stuff on my back other than a robot and demon.

Honestly, I still love my first two tattoos, but almost regret them now because of the arm tattoo.  The two images on my back mean something to me but they’re kinda just floating there all alone.  This arm tattoo just makes me wish I had included them into a mosaic, something bigger than just themselves.  I kinda wish now the arm tattoo was my first one, but I’m hoping I can work the other two into some type of pattern.

Anyways, I can’t make the arm tattoo one big photo like they do in tattoo magazines, so here are just a bunch of shots of it.  Enjoy!

“Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.” – Leviticus 19:28

The Judaic Law against tattooing was formulated by this source sentiment, written at a time when the act was exclusively a cultist rite of passage that indelibly associated itself with a particular clan/deity; the statement affirming the first Commandment given to the Hebrews (completely ignoring for the moment the utilization of ritual scarification via the Commandment of circumcision). Makkot 20a[1] discusses the semantics of this statement: the sages of the Mishna differentiate between scarification and the application of ink into wounds, claiming that if one is done but not the other, then the person with the markings is not culpable for punishment. Rabbi Simeon son of Judah proclaimed in the name of a former rabbi, Simeon, that the only culpable act for tattooing is printing the name of God.[2] There continue discussions as to whether that includes the true names of God or if the names of idols would also cull punishment[3], which seems somewhat circular when the passage is pretty clear in referencing the 10 Commandments (e.g. “You shall have no other gods before Me”) and putting another god’s name on you would seem sort of…well, heretical.

What might amy of this this have to do with the technology tag? Well, it has everything to do with technology. As Phillips will soon introduce to the world, tattooing will take on an entirely different dimension when LEDs are placed sub-dermally, allowing one to toggle one’s tattoo into different designs or entirely off at a whim. Sure, applying this device purely for cosmetic purposes would undoubtedly deal some halakhic questions, but then there are other applications for this technology, beyond being the coolest tattoo ever.

These devices are silicon and silk implants, physical objects surgically inserted into the body, initially being used for medical applications. And the text of Leviticus reads “You shall not make any cuttings for the dead,” but one can do anything to save a life[5] and how many lives would be saved by a digital registry implanted in the skin of one’s medical records, of a built-in glucose meter, a display for respiration, of temperature, of blood pressure. The ramifications for good are too great to be denied, these will be a great boon to health maintenance (for everyone who can afford one).

But what about the commercial applications? Is it okay for the Orthodox and Conservative Jewish communities to use such devices? Once implanted for the medical application – it could surely could be utilized for the latter purpose too; is this a violation of the ancient code that speaks of printing and markings for the dead? Would even the Name of God be considered “in print,” when it can be argued that a digital representation of anything is not considered “written?”[4]

To imprecisely transcribe Maimonides in Misneh Torah, The Laws of Idolatry, 12:11, regardless of the intent (speaking of the former practice exclusively for idolatry, and even if it is fashionable {or life-saving?}), it is forbidden for a Torah Observant Jew to have markings on the skin. Would not the trivialities that could be produced from this subcutaneous transplant be accountable to this position? Just because it is possible, does that mean that it should be done? The Orthodox Union released this announcement in 2002 in regards to cloning, which could definitively be applied to stem cells, and presumably this issue:

The Torah commands us to treat and cure the ill and to defeat disease wherever possible; to do this is to be the Creator’s partner in safeguarding the created. The traditional Jewish perspective thus emphasizes that maximizing the potential to save and heal human lives is an integral part of valuing human life.[...] [I]f cloning technology research advances our ability to heal humans with greater success, it ought to be pursued [...][6]

I suppose the real questions I’m really trying to ask is whether or not I could show it to my mother (may she rest in peace) or would it have killed her? Would she have ever known? Could this device have saved her life if she had it measuring her blood’s potassium level?

Undoubtedly there is much to be considered here from the the Torah Observant Jew’s perspective, and there are sure to be opinions on both side of the spectrum. Personally, I am of the opinion that the subcutaneous Electronic Tattoo will be a major benefit to health care, both personally and to practitioners, and when they become available, I intend to get one.

If you look at them, they will tell you a story.New LED tattoos from the University of Pennsylvania could make the Illustrated Man real (minus the creepy stories, of course). Researchers there are developing silicon-and-silk implantable devices which sit under the skin like a tattoo. Already implanted into mice, these tattoos could carry LEDs, turning your skin into a screen. [The most cool mice  in the world]  The silk substrate onto which the chips are mounted eventually dissolves away inside the body, leaving just the electronics behind. The silicon chips are around the length of a small grain of rice — about 1 millimeter, and just 250 nanometers thick. The sheet of silk will keep them in place, molding to the shape of the skin when saline solution is added.These displays could be hooked up to any kind of electronic device, also inside the body. Medical uses are being explored, from blood-sugar sensors that show their readouts on the skin itself to neurodevices that tie into the body’s nervous system — hooking chips to particular nerves to control a prosthetic hand, for example.Chips are already used inside bodies, most notably the tiny RFID tags injected into pets. But the flexible nature of these “tattooed” circuits means they can move elastically with the body, sitting in places that a rigid circuit board couldn’t.The first displays are sure to be primitive, but likely very useful for the patients that receive them. You won’t be getting the full-color, hi-res images that come with ink, but functional displays. This doesn’t mean that the commercial and artistic possibilities are being ignored. The mistress of former ESPN Baseball Tonight studio man Steve Phillips has spoken, and she’s not sorry. She’s not crazy, either (I beg to differ). Brooke Hundley appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America today to tell her side of the racy affair between herself, a former 22-year-old intern-type at the network, and Phillips, a 46-year-old broadcaster and former general manager of the New York Mets.

As mentioned, Hundley didn’t go as far as to admit any fault, although she said she “understands the pain” of Phillips wife, since they’ve both been humiliated in public. She insisted she’s not a stalker and only left a crazy letter describing the affair on Phillips’ doorstep because she wanted something to happen to get her out of the “horrific” situation.

Anyway, I’ll resist passing any more judgment on this one other than to say I think Phillips and Hundley are both out of their minds for a variety of reasons. I will say, though, the highlight of the interview is Hundley’s disdain for Jay Leno. I tell you, ever since Jay got that new primetime show, he’s been raising some serious hell.

Pass me a Screwdriver

The screwdriver is a necessary and required tool for those of us in the art department. My preference goes to the all-in-one retractable bit screwdrivers which are great for quick on-set use but for during construction or set decoration I prefer using my 65 piece screwdriver set. Make sure your screwdriver set is made of strong metal and magnetic alloy to keep your screws from dropping and reduce stripping. I find the worst is the Black & Decker bits and screwdrivers which are weak and prone to stripping the Phillips, PoziDriv, and Robertson bits. Mastercraft and Craftsman are excellent.

One of my pet peeves during the prepping of a set is when I ask a set dresser or Art PA, etc. to pass me a Robertson #2 and they stare at me blankly and then say, “What’s that?” While I expect this from newer, more green crew members it always surprises me how many people don’t know the names and sizes of certain tools, most annoying and simplest of which is the screwdriver. So I figure everyone has to learn somewhere and hopefully you get something out of this next time you’re asked to pass a specific screwdriver. When I was first starting out I thought Hex Keys were called X-Keys. LOL. I felt like the biggest loser when I found out I’d been saying it wrong because I didn’t bother to find out differently.

Melanie Phillips isn’t the only blogger championing the “media cools for global warming” meme, but I find her so engrossingly unpleasant I couldn’t help tuning in.

Regardless of how personally repugnant I find Mrs. Phillips, by the time I dropped into her twisted corner of the internet, I had seen enough similarly worded articles to convince me to take the argument semi-seriously. Of course, this didn’t for one second encourage me to believe the mad woman. It just meant I had to do some additional research…

This search for the truth led me towards hard metrics, courtesy of Nasa who have enough graphs, tables and data to fill even the gaping void in Melanie’s skull.

According to the pretty coloured lines, whichever way you look at it, the world is warming. Nasa are using temperature anomalies to measure change. Instead of showing actual temperature, as you might expect (I know I did), the graphs show how much each data point departs from the 20th century average. The reason for this is given in pretty good detail on the NOAA Satellite and Information Service website.

In case you can’t be bothered to explore that link: the higher the line or darker the red, the warmer the planet. This is starkly visualised below…

At one point in her article, Melanie asks, “Does man-made global warming only affect the top bit of the planet but not the bottom, perhaps?” Fortunately, there’s a graph for that too…

A common tactic for climate change deniers is to seize upon those data points that don’t follow a continuing upwards trend. The less sophisticated of these use spurious anecdotal evidence (“Global warming!? Well where’s our bloody summer gone?”), while others point to periods that, in their minds at least, don’t fit the ‘warmists’ narrative. If you ignore their appeals for common sense for a moment (or for good) and instead sticking to using sense, you can find a well-established explanation for that too.

The El Nino effect is one such explanation. By my understanding, El Nino is an irregular phenomenon that scientists don’t really understand but causes periodic warming or cooling in the surface water of the Pacific region. This graph shows the impact it has on the peaks and the troughs, without detracting from the overall upwards trend.

More data is used to challenge this “we were right all along” attitude on the Real Climate blog.

Maybe Melanie’s right and I shouldn’t be paying attention to these evil, scaremongering statistics. Melanie obviously represents a cool, level-headed, unblinkered, non-ideological observer, as evidenced through the support of her adoring fans…

Truth has has nothing to do with Global Warming/Climate Change, it is a convenient vehicle which has been used to take the world in a certain direction. The totalitarian mind set behind it is the same as any extreme regime, ‘as we take control we can beg, buy, threaten or extort the scientists, engineers or funding that we need.’ When faced with this type of mind set which creates the agendas of various world leaders, which can be nothing more than a lust for power associated with another’s socialist ideals but heading in the same direction, you don’t need a conspiracy. Global Warming/Climate Change provides all this and more.
This is the present and very dangerous base that will destroy the engine of the world’s industrial system. As important as the exposing of the moves of Obama or Islamist cause or the various wars and political expediencies around the world are, they become mere deck chair shuffling on the Titanic when compared with the goals of the climate alarmists. These will cripple the Western World bring in a world wide totalitarian government and in so doing cripple the freedoms we have taken so long to gain over the centuries world wide.
