Do you think there is a phobia for specific days of the week? I am sure there is. I should Google it. I don’t think my feelings for Tuesdays qualify as a true phobia, but it has become apparent that I do have a fear of Tuesdays. This is a new fear. It has only developed in the last few months. It coincides very neatly with the start of this blog.

When I started this blog I committed myself to posting three days a week. I had done some research, and I knew from personal experience with the blogs I read on a regular basis, if you don’t post on a set schedule – or at least on a regular basis – you would never develop a readership. I picked Monday Wednesday and Friday. That gave me a good range of days and enough days in between to get the posts written even if life got in the way and I had no time to write for a day or two.

Then I got the brilliant idea for Thousand Word Thursday. That bumped me up to four days a week. But that was still manageable. The picture of the week was something I could research ahead of time. I could schedule a couple of them at a time. And it was something fun and different.

Thousand Word Thursday worked so well I thought I needed to figure out a hook for Tuesdays. If I found a hook, that would give me a post for every weekday. And if it was a good enough hook, I would still only have to write three posts a week. If it was good enough, like Thursdays, Tuesdays would write themselves. But I’m all about alliteration. And cheesy puns. I had to have both the hook and the title. Without it, I could not force myself to commit to writing this additional post every week. My fear was being unable to come up with enough content for another post.

The problem? I could not find the hook. I could not find the title.

The result? I am afraid to commit to Tuesdays.

Maybe someday.

What in the name of Baphomet is a “stealth metalhead”?  Webster’s Dictionary defines the term as…well, it doesn’t define it.  But if I were to try my hand at being a dictionary, I would say that it’s someone who keeps their love for metal on the down low.  Sadly, I don’t know any stockbrokers or bankers with Black Sabbath on vinyl, so here’s the next best thing: celebrities!  Because everybody loves celebrities!

5.     Rivers Cuomo

It’s no secret that Rivers Cuomo loves metal.  From their earliest years, Weezer professed an undying love of Satan and all things evil, even going so far as to invoke the dark lord himself on several of The Blue Album’s biggest singles.  But long before the blood sacrifices that made him a teen pop sensation, there was Avant Garde.

Yes, my friends, that’s Rivers Cuomo on lead guitar.  Did you hear that?  Those licks!  That shredding!  That, my friends, is what we call “the metal”.  Unfortunately, Avant Garde failed miserably to achieve anything in the way of success, (which is surprising given that every hair metal band in the 80s had a record deal.)  This lead to the band changing their name to Zoom before disbanding completely, likely due to their inability to pick out cool band names.

4.     Phil Elverum

What do you mean I have to wait another week for my Burzum import?

Most of you reading this probably don’t know who Phil Elverum is.  It isn’t really surprising since most of you apparently suffer a brain embolism at the thought of listening to anything that doesn’t suffix with “core”.  Despite that, Elverum is our number 4 stealth metalhead.

Known mainly for his band, Mount Eerie, the first Phil on our list rose to indie stardom earlier this year with his latest release, Wind’s Poem – a record informed by countless hours of poorly engineered black metal that I don’t have any interest in listening to.  In a world where hipsters ironically latch onto Xasthur, it’s his unabashedly unironic love that puts him on our list.  We would’ve put him higher, but you’re all a bunch of cunts who would probably bitch about it.

3.     Demi Lovato

Unleash the fucking fury.

Demetria Devonne “Demi” Lovato[1] (born August 20, 1992) is an American actress and singer-songwriter. She is best known for her role as Mitchie Torres in the Disney Channel Original Movie Camp Rock and Sonny Munroe in Sonny With A Chance.

Which is probably why it was so surprising when she openly stated that she enjoyed Job For A Cowboy and Dimmu Borgir.  While both bands ultimately fall on our list of all time Worst Bands Evar, it still fills us with joy at the thought of fingerblasting her to “Run To The Hills”.  At the very least, we’re looking forward to her eventual split with Phobia (now featuring even more guitar solos from Kerry King) once she leaves the safety of her Disney Channel backers.

2.     Ryan Adams

Much like our beloved Rivers, Ryan Adams has a not-so-secret love of metal.

Ironic or not, that shit slays.

1.     Phil Anselmo

We’re going to refrain from making jokes about Phil Anselmo lest he pull our balls out of our assholes.

“A ha!” you shout to no one in particular, “Phil Anselmo isn’t a stealth metalhead!  He was in one of the most popular metal bands of all time!  He even owns and operates Housecore Records – a label dedicated to bringing you the finest in metal-slash-hardcore!”

True enough.  Anselmo is largely known for fronting Pantera.  However, it is his credentials with side projects which earn him our top spot, often releasing more respectable albums from Christ Inversion, Down, and Necrophagia alongside shit like Cowboys From Hell.  Simply the fact that Pantera was not metal enough for Anselmo only cements our respect for the man.

Honorable mention: Apparently the singer from Jimmy Eat World worships Satan and listens to Godflesh or something.  Though we couldn’t be bothered to verify this information via Wikipedia, we would at this time like to speculate that the success of Jimmy Eat World may have nothing to do with their music and everything to do with blood orgies.

Tony Kwok Man-wai

Sebanyak 21 negara telah menggunakan jasa Tony Kwok Man-wai dalam berbagai kapasitas terkait dengan pemberantasan korupsi. Dia tak menganggap penting bayaran yang diterima.

PARA pejabat Hongkong yang korup rata-rata punya koneksi dengan kelompok mafia. Tapi, jika dibandingkan dengan saat bertugas selama 27 tahun (1975-2002) di Komisi Independen Pemberantasan Korupsi Hongkong (ICAC), Tony Kwok merasa bahwa pengalaman paling menegangkan sebagai pemburu koruptor adalah ketika bekerja selama setahun di Nigeria atas permintaan Bank Dunia.

Bukan saja harus menghadapi resistensi keras dari para petinggi negara yang doyan mengancam, Tony juga mesti berurusan dengan para pejabat militer yang terbiasa menyelesaikan masalah dengan senjata.

“Jadi, mereka yang mengira memberantas korupsi di Filipina bagaikan disodori cawan beracun, saya rasa mereka belum pernah ke Nigeria,” kelakarnya, seperti dikutip AFP.

Filipina? Tak usah heran. Karir sebagai investigator korupsi memang telah mengantarkan Tony Kwok sebagai “warga dunia.” Setidaknya pemerintahan di 21 negara di berbagai benua telah menggunakan jasa pria yang hobi menyelam, golf, dan skuas tersebut untuk memberantas korupsi. Juga 10 pemerintahan kota di Tiongkok.

Jadilah dia investigator korupsi paling laris di dunia. Baik itu dalam kapasitas sebagai konsultan, penasihat, maupun sekadar narasumber seminar atau workshop. Berbagai media besar dunia pun bergantian memuat kisahnya. Cobalah ketika namanya di Google, setidaknya 5 ribu entri akan muncul.

Yang terbaru, pada 12 Oktober lalu, dia berbagi pengalaman dengan Komisi Antikorupsi Malaysia (MACC) di Kuala Lumpur. Dalam kesempatan itu, pria yang pernah diwawancarai Jawa Pos ketika berkunjung ke Indonesia pada April 2006 tersebut menegaskan pentingnya kontinuitas dan jam terbang.

“Butuh setidaknya dua setengah tahun agar seseorang bisa menjadi investigator korupsi yang andal,” kata pria yang sejak pensiun dari ICAC pada 2002 telah membuka jasa konsultasi antikorupsi itu, seperti dikutip Bernama.

Tony mulai membangun karir sebagai investigator korupsi tak lama setelah ICAC berdiri. Sebelumnya, dia bekerja di Bea Cukai Hongkong. Seperti dilansir Financial Times, selama 27 tahun ayah tiga anak itu bertugas, ICAC berhasil menekan drastis praktik patgulipat di birokrasi Hongkong. Jika pada saat KPK-nya Hongkong tersebut pertama berdiri pada 1974 angka korupsi birokrasi mencapai 86 persen dari semua laporan yang masuk, pada 1999 angka itu tinggal 41 persen. Contoh keberhasilan lain bisa dilihat di korupsi di kepolisian. Pada 1974, jumlahnya mencapai 45 persen. Tapi, pada 1999, angkanya tinggal 16 persen.

Saat tenaganya disewa Presiden Filipina Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo sebagai penasihat antikorupsi (2005-2007), penerima sejumlah penghargaan dari pemerintah Hongkong tersebut berhasil membidani lahirnya tim antikorupsi di 16 lembaga penting pemerintahan. Itu dilakukan dalam waktu tiga bulan saja.

Tony menganut prinsip zero tolerance dalam soal korupsi. Dalam wawancara dengan Jawa Pos pada 2006, dia mengatakan pernah menangkap seorang tukang pos di Hongkong karena meminta uang lelah kepada seorang penerima paket. “Ketika melamar suatu pekerjaan, Anda tentu tahu berapa gaji yang akan diterima. Jadi, kecilnya gaji tak bisa dijadikan alasan untuk melakukan korupsi,” katanya ketika itu.

Pria berkacamata itu juga percaya betul pada tiga rumus untuk membasmi sekaligus menangkal “aksi kriminal berisiko rendah tapi sangat menghasilkan” tersebut. “Kunci memberantas korupsi adalah pencegahan, pendidikan, dan penciptaan hambatan supaya kejahatan yang sama tidak muncul lagi.” Pentingnya menanamkan kesadaran antikorupsi lewat pendidikan itu pula yang mendorong Tony memelopori kelahiran program studi international postgraduate certificate course in corruption studies di Hongkong University. Itu merupakan program studi pertama di dunia.

Fobia (phobia) adalah rasa ketakutan yang berlebihan pada sesuatu hal atau fenomena. Fobia bisa dikatakan dapat menghambat kehidupan orang yang mengidapnya. Bagi sebagian orang, perasaan takut seorang pengidap Fobia sulit dimengerti. Itu sebabnya, pengidap tersebut sering dijadikan bulan bulanan oleh teman sekitarnya.

Ada perbedaan “bahasa” antara pengamat fobia dengan seorang pengidap fobia. Pengamat fobia menggunakan bahasa logika sementara seorang pengidap fobia biasanya menggunakan bahasa rasa. Bagi pengamat dirasa lucu jika seseorang berbadan besar, takut dengan hewan kecil seperti kecoak atau tikus. Sementara dibayangan mental seorang pengidap fobia subjek tersebut menjadi benda yang sangat besar, berwarna, sangat menjijikkan ataupun menakutkan.

Ada 10 jenis objek yang paling sering ditakuti oleh manusia di muka bumi ini, Berikut bahasannya:
1. Takut ular

Ini merupakan jenis phobia yang paling sering dijumpai. Ketakutan secara berlebihan pada ular dikaitkan pada kemampuan nenek moyang kita bertahan di alam liar. Ular sejak dulu dianggap hewan berbisa, menjijikkan, dari masa ke masa. Bahkan juga diidentikkan dengan setan oleh keyakinan tertentu. Ternyata phobia akan ular ini bersifat evolusioner, diturunkan oleh nenek moyang manusia sejak zaman dulu sampai sekarag.

2. Takut laba-laba

Ditemukan bahwa kaum perempuan empat kali lipat lebih banyak jumlahnya yang takut atau jijik pada laba-laba daripada kaum lelaki. Pada studi yang dipublikasikan di jurnal Evolution and Human Behavior, David Rakison dari Carnegie Mellon University di Pittsburgh mengatakan bahwa bayi perempuan usia 11 bulan mampu mengekspresikan ketakutan begitu melihat gambar laba0laba dan ular, sedangkan bayi lelaki tidak. Teori evolusi mengatakan bahwa hal itu wajar, sebab kaum perempuan sering bersua laba-laba di rumah, atau saat mereka menyiapkan makanan di dapur. Sedangkan kaum lelaki cenderung diajarkan untuk berani pada hewan tersebut ketika berada di alam liar.

3. Takut ruangan tertutup

Dikenal juga dengan nama agoraphobia, ketakutan ini diderita oleh 1,8 juta orang Amerika berusia dewasa, demikian menurut laporan National Institute of Mental Health pada tahun 2008. Tempat tertutup yang dianggap sulit untuk mereka melarikan diri atau keluar merupakan obyek yang paling ditakuti. Biasanya mereka takut pada elevator/lift, ruang olah raga tertutup, jembatan, kendaraan transportasi umum, mobil, mall, bahkan juga pesawat. Penderita biasanya malas bepergian atau berada di dalam mobil terlalu lama.

4. Takut pada orang lain

Pernah bertemu orang yang mukanya memerah saat bicara di depan orang banyak? Berkeringat, susah bicara atau gagap atau bahkan sampai sakit perut? Itulah ciri-ciri orang yang takut pada orang lain atau dikenal dengan nama sosialphobia. Sebanyak 15 juta orang Amerika dewasa menderitanya, demikian menurut National Institute of Mental Health. Yang parah, kadang bukan saat melakukan pembicaraan di depan umum saja. Penderita sosialphobia juga kerap kesulitan makan atau minum di depan orang banyak. Gejalanya baru terlihat setelah memasuki usia puber.

5. Takut ketinggian

Ini adalah jenis phobia yang juga lumayan banyak penderitanya. Diperkirakan sebagnyak 3-5% dari seluruh populasi dunia menderita akrophobia, takut berada di tempat tinggi. Pada riset yang pernah dilakukan, penderita akrophobia merasa semua tempat tinggi berjarak lebih tinggi dari yang sesungguhnya. Misalnya tinggi sebenarnya hanya 3 meter, maka di mata penderita akrophobia, mereka seperti melihat obyek yang tingginya 6 meter.

6. Takut kegelapan

Takut pada kegelapan yang diderita anak-anak ternyata adalah phobia paling umum juga. “Anak-anak mempercayai imajinasinya bahwa di kegelapan bisa mendadak muncul hanti, penculik, atau perampok,” jelas Thomas Ollendick, profesor psikologi dan direktur Child Study Center di Virginia Tech. Secara normal, ketakutan ini akan hilang seiring dengan bertambahnya usia. Namun jika hingga usia dewasa kita masih menderita ketakutan pada gelap, maka artinya kita menderita nyctophobia.

7. Takut kilat dan halilintar

Bagi para penderita phobia ini, suara halilintar dan kilat akan terasa seperti menghentak jantung, bahkan membuat mereka berkeringat. Penderita yang parah bahkan sampai memutuskan pindah ke daerah yang aman dari petir dan kilat., demikian kata John Westefeld, ilmuwan dari University of Iowa. Westefeld melaporkan, dari surveinya terhadap mahasiswa di tahun 2006, sebanyak 73% menderita ketakutan ringan pada cuaca. Namun kebanyakan mereka malu untuk mengakuinya. Bagi mereka yang phobia pada kilat dan halilintar, ada baiknya mulai melatih rasa panik dan kecemasan.

8. Takut terbang

Jangan dikira mereka ini orang udik yang belum pernah naik pesawat, sebab faktanya sebanyak 25 juta warga Amerika juga menderita phobia ini. Nama penyakitnya adalah aviophobia, dimana seseorang sangat takut naik pesawat. Bisa jadi memang sudah sejak lahir begitu, atau ada yang pernah mengalami kecelakaan pesawat sehingga merasa trauma naik pesawat lagi, sebab peristiwa mengerikan itu terus terbayang.

9. Takut Anjing

Tidak usah harus anjing besar jenis doberman, anjing yang imut macam pudel pun ditakuti. Penderita cynophobia ini mengalami rasa takut digigit anjing, bisa jadi memang pernah digigit atau melihat orang lain digigit anjing, demikian menurut profesor psikologi Brad Schmidt dari Ohio State University.

10. Takut Dokter Gigi

Bukan cuma anak kecil lho yang takut ke dokter gigi, orang dewasa juga ada. Sebanyak 9-20 oersen orang Amerika ternyata menghindari memeriksakan giginya ke dokter walau sudah dalam kondisi parah sekalipun. Rasa takut ini lebih disebabkan oleh rasa nyeri yang timbul ketika plak gigi dibersihkan, dan memang tidak semua orang bisa menahannya.

From the “Fear Not” article by Kluger, it is learned that researchers have identified three main types of phobias; Social phobias, where the sufferer feels paralyzing fear at the prospect of social or professional encounters, Panic disorders, where the person is periodically blindsided by overwhelming fear for no apparent reason and Specific phobias, where a person is afraid of a specific object.  Autophobia, pedophobia, peladophobia  and Teutophobia are examples of Social phobias because the fear is of certain “types” of people. Automatonophobia, geniophobia, herpetophobia, hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia, molysomophobia, pediophobia, and triskaidekaphobia are Specific phobias because they are fears of certain objects/things. All of these phobias can become apart of panic disorders if the phobia advances.

When regarding how some researchers believe that phobias began with our ancient ancestors it also important to note the implications of classical conditioning. To say that our ancient ancestors, like Lucy, had Automatonophobia, the fear of ventriloquist’s dummies is highly doubtful for there were no such things as ventriloquist dummies then. This phobia is due to classical conditioning where a person has had multiple and continual bad experiences with ventriloquist’s dummies and begins to associate negative feelings towards them. However a phobia such as Herpetophobia, the fear of reptiles, could be a phobia that began within our ancient ancestors. Phobia’s regarding ancient peoples are generally related to the fear of insects/animals, natural environments, blood/injury and dangerous situations. All of these causes of phobia threatened survival and caused these people to immediately leave their presence, increasing their fear of the unknown. The fear or reptiles can easily fit within the category of insects/animals and could as well threaten human survival, therefore initiating fear. These fears are said to be controlled by the paralimbic region of the brain which also controls all primal responses, according to the “Fear Not” article.

Nevertheless, all phobias are not without cures. The most simple, but perhaps the hardest form of a cure is systematic desensitization, in which individuals imagine scenes or events that are increasingly anxiety provoking and at the same time engage in procedures that endure feelings of relaxation. For example, pediophobia, the fear of dolls could be treated by encouraging the patient to think of all the things that remind them of dolls, and then calm them down by giving them tea, or a warm drink. Then bring a picture of a doll in and calm them down again, followed by bringing a doll towards the patient and calming them down, and finally, allowing the patient to hold a doll while calming them down. Replacing thoughts of “this doll is going to kill me” to “it’s a doll, I can handle it.” Is the main goal of this cognitive-behavioural therapy. In addition to cognitive-behavioural therapy, group therapy may be used as well as individual therapy. Along with therapies, there are various medications such as Prozac, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI’s) and Paxil that work against phobias. Well this weekend started like just about any other weekend with me trying to relax, watching some T.V. and knitting.  I was so excited to get to work on my mom’s Christmas sweater, but worried about the yarn the pattern called for…and I should’ve listened to the little voice saying “stay away from bouclé!”.

I was a good little girl and made sure to knit the swatch and after switching a few needle sizes, I think I got the right gauge.  Of course with that horrible yarn it was hard to tell because all the stitches got lost in each other.  I decided that it looked as close to the gauge as I could get and started knitting away.  I carefully counted my stitches on every increase row, trying to make sure I had the correct number of stitches since I couldn’t make out where eat stitch was in the already knitted fabric.  After about half way through all the increases, I somehow ended up short on what would become a sleeve.  That was the last straw!

So now I’m back to square one, trying to decide if a sweater for my mom is even possible.  I’ve been browsing through Ravelry’s pattern database, and I’ve found another easy raglan sweater pattern that I think will work…only problem is I didn’t have yarn for it.  I’ve run to all the crafty stores here (since I’m on a limited budget), and not a single store had enough of one dye lot in stock.  Thank goodness for Knit Picks and their inexpensive prices!

Luckily I have yarn for a few other projects to work on while I wait for the yarn to get here.  I’m just hoping I have enough time left to get her sweater done.

Well, well, well who has a phobia then? A phobia is a strong persistent fear of an object, situation, activity or person. Deep down everyone has a fear of some sort, but when the fear becomes beyond your control it becomes a phobia. Interestingly, people can get a phobia from just about anything. The most common phobia in the world is odynophobia – the fear of pain. In the United States it is believed to be arachnophobia – fear of spiders. A close second would have to be aviophobia (or aerophobia ) the fear of flying, with over 25 million Americans scared to fly.
