Hippophobia is the fear of horses or any hoofed animals. This is what is known as a specific phobia.

Hippophobia is the fear of horses or any hoofed animals. This is what is known as a specific phobia. Specific phobias are the easiest to treat as they are the easiest to understand. Specific phobias are divided into four subcategories, fear of insects or animals; fear of natural environments; fear of blood or injury; and fear of dangerous situations. These four subcategories are very closely related to fears our early ancestors would have had to help them survive. Hippophobia fits into the fear of insects or animals subcategory.

A person with hippophobia may have developed this fear due to something unfortunate that may have happened to them. The person with the fear of horses may have been bucked off of a horse when they were a kid and fear the same thing happening again if they were to come in contact with a horse.

This phobia can be treated either using anti-anxiety medication, behavior therapy, or by using the five-step systematic desensitization program. Using breathing and relaxation exercises with each step, the person will be told to imagine a horse. They will then be shown a picture of a horse. Next they will see a real horse and after that be asked to touch the horse. Finally the person will be asked to ride the horse. The persons fear should no longer exist or should be dramatically helped through these treatments.

A few Interesting Phobias: Ablutophobia- Fear of washing or bathing. Agateophobia- Fear of insanity.

A few Interesting Phobias:

Ablutophobia- Fear of washing or bathing.

Agateophobia- Fear of insanity.

Ambulophobia- Fear of walking..

Cacophobia- Fear of ugliness.

Chaetophobia- Fear of hair.

Geliophobia- Fear of laughter.

Heliophobia- Fear of the sun.

Koinoniphobia- Fear of rooms.

Nephophobia- Fear of clouds.

Symmetrophobia- Fear of symmetry.

All of these fears are completely irrational, especially ones such as Heliophobia, the fear of the sun, orAmbulophobia, the fear of walking, because those fears are things you need to do/have to survive. By their definitions, they fit into what a phobia is, but being conditioned to be afraid of such things is beyond my mind. The fear of rooms? What would have to occur to make someone learn to be afraid of rooms? Could something tragic have of happened while they were young? Also how would they live without enter rooms, they’d have to live outside? Another completely irrational fear is Nephophobia, the fear of clouds. The same questions arise when thinking of how this phobia came to be. A fear of clouds could have been developed from things such as lighting, or tornadoes.

Treating phobias can be done through one of two ways; flooding and desensitization. For this example I’ll use Ablutophobia, the fear of bathing. Flooding can be use to treat this phobia, by suddenly surrounding the person with their fear and overwhelming them. In this case it would be forcing them to bathe abruptly. Getting rid of the fear through desensitization is a longer and a more in depth process, but is usually easier on the person since it’s more gradual. The steps are as followed:

Prior to being exposed to their fear they are taught coping mechanisms to relax.

Expose the person to the object, and let them cope with it. Then repeat this step with more exposure each time getting worse and worse. For example show a picture of a spider for arachnophobia, then later make them see the actual spider.

Let the person realize that their fear is irrational by teaching them that their fear isn’t doing anything to them.

I have re-started an experiment I started back in ‘97 when I had the honor of meeting Herbert

I have re-started an experiment I started back in ‘97 when I had the honor of meeting Herbert Brün and attending one of his classes at the School for Designing a Society in Urbana, IL, where I learned how words could shape reality. Mr. Brun had proposed a discussion for that particular class based on whether “Power” can be a positive force. In the end, after much (sometimes heated) discourse by the students, his position was that it could not; that any use of the word “power” was inherently flawed, but that is another post for another day. On that morning, Mr. Brün had forever changed my outlook on life and on the use of words; how words affect us and the world around us. The concept of “reality is a word construct” never once occurred to me before that discussion.

When I returned back home to Dreamtime Village, I made a plan to begin an experiment based on what I had learned at the School. After the loss of my son Yogi in ‘95, I had developed an acute case of anthrophobia, or fear of people or society, which was highly problematic since I was living in a community filled with lots of transient folks! It kept me hidden away from everyone, and consequently I missed a lot of life during that time.

One night, when Lyx and Zon were relating to me all the colorful details of yet another fantastic party that I had missed, I decided it was high time to take some action. The next day I would “leave the womb” and pretend I was not afraid. At first the intention was to go over to where the visitors resided (at one of Dreamtime’s buildings called the “hotel“) and finally meet who was there. Of course, the fear was still there, underneath the mask, but I was determined to play the game through, even if it was only to be for one hour. I remember thinking “Can’t they see that I’m faking? It’s so obvious I’m petrified to even be here!” but if they did notice, they must have been pretending themselves, because I couldn’t see any evidence of it. On the walk home that afternoon, I was walking on air, elated and yet still shaking with the effort that it took to put on such an extravagant performance.

The next day was a repeat performance, followed by another day of the same results, and so on. This experiment continued, growing incrementally each time, until one day, about a month later, while I was laughing with someone at a party, it occurred to me that I wasn’t afraid any more. It wasn’t that my acting skills had improved, I actually wasn’t afraid any more. It was an overwhelming realization. I was stunned. I wasn’t afraid at all, in fact, I was totally relaxed and having a great time! I never expected to alter my personality. It was simply an experiment to see if I could fool myself for short periods of time. Even now, after more than 10 years of this revelatory moment, I am overcome with emotion at the wonder of it all.

These days I am no longer anthrophobic, but I am still battling with stage fright. Recently I was helping a friend through some grief issues, and when I shared this story with him, it reminded me that I could take on another experiment to overcome this remaining phobia. I was thinking about a dear friend of mine who doesn’t have stage fright. In fact, she is one of the most bold and outgoing people I know. She is an Aries, and whether or not you believe in astrology, she is the very picture of this sign.

If you don’t know anything about the astrological sign Aries, here is a brief description:

(a) The Ram; the first of the twelve signs in the zodiac, which the sun enters at the vernal equinox, about the 21st of March.
(b) A constellation west of Taurus, drawn on the celestial globe in the figure of a ram.

Now, here is Webster’s definition of a battering ram:

1 : a military siege engine consisting of a large wooden beam with a head of iron used in ancient times to beat down the walls of a besieged place
2 : a heavy metal bar with handles used (as by firefighters) to batter down doors and walls

Here is an astrological description of Aries:

Like the ram, Aries sees a target, puts its head down, and charges. After the initial thrust, he or she looks around, resets its direction and charges again. A phrase that is associated with Aries is: “I AM,”

Here is a description of Virgo, which is my astrological sign:

The Virgo personality is nothing if not practical. You can be attentive to details to the point of obsession. Virgos have encyclopedic memories for detail, and can often recall casual references to minor subjects. A phrase that most aptly describes this personality is: “I analyze.”

Now, it makes no difference if you believe in astrology or not, as for me, I believe and don’t believe in just about everything. In the words of Robert Anton Wilson, “Belief is the death of intelligence.” This is less about astrology than it is about my experimenting with the concept of reality being a word construct. If I pretend I have these bold qualities of this archetype, then I will perhaps acquire them with practice.

Stay tuned to see if the experiment works!…..

WHO is this e-mail from? The writer says he is going to “FB” me in the evening. What? My nether regi

WHO is this e-mail from? The writer says he is going to “FB” me in the evening. What? My nether regions begin to twitch.

Happily, it turns out to be a former colleague from 25 years ago who wants to chat on Facebook. Ah, FB. So glad it wasn’t someone intent on pulverising the tip of their Doc Martens with a soft part of my anatomy.

New acronyms, words and even phrases are appearing all the time. Take drivers who weave all over the road. If they have had a few bevvies, they are said to be intoxicated. But, if it is because they are reading or sending messages on their mobiles, they are now intexticated.

Another new one, unfriend, is the word of the year. It’s when you delete someone from your list of friends on Facebook or Bebo. They are no longer your online friend because you have unfriended them. Get it?

They have lists every few years of new words and phrases that have made it into the English language. Recently inserted are retail elephant, auto dentist and late plate.

A retail elephant is a business that dominates or monopolises an area. So the Lewis Crofters is the retail elephant of Island Road in Stornoway and the Cearns Shop is the retail elephant of, er, the Cearns. An auto dentist is someone who fixes dents on cars. Of course.

And a late plate is a train running behind time? Nope, it is a dish served coolly to a person who returns from the Carlton Bar, or some such fine establishment, well after the evening meal has been served.

In Gaelic, the process for integrating a new word or phrase is slightly different. New words and combinations that have never been used in a school or in a fank on a Saturday afternoon can be firmly installed in the Gaels’ consciousness by 9am on Monday.

If anchormen Donald Morrison and James Macdonald use a word on the 7.30am Gaelic news show, that’s all it takes. The power these people have is terrifying.

Even medical conditions can suddenly make it into our lexicon. Take thymestic syndrome, for example. This is when someone says they can forgive but they cannot forget – literally. Such is their power of recall about everything that they spend their lives thinking about silly little things that the rest of us forget in a day or two.

It is an actual medical condition. As a Maciver, I should really suffer from this terrible malady because our clan motto is Nunquam Obliviscar – I Will Never Forget. If only that were true. I can’t even remember why I brought this up.

Oh yes, new words. Like baggravation. That is something you suffer from when you fly from Glasgow to Stornoway, for example, and you realise that your bags are not on the carousel because the handlers at Glasgow could not be bothered as they were on a tea break.

In extreme circumstances, a bad bout of baggravation can go on for days when, as happened to a member of the Gaelic mafia travelling to London, a holdall containing two black puddings, 6lb of gigot – and, for all I know, a horse’s head – ended up in Italy.

However, it never, ever happens on the Stornoway-Glasgow route. And that is because Roddy Macleod and the guys at Flybe in Stornoway are just so very, very professional. They are all so polite and helpful, too. What an asset everyone in that office is to the airline.

And did I mention they are all very professional? Good. Because they are. Very.

Meanwhile, I need a new word for a rare medical condition that has wrecked the life of my good friend George Gawk Campbell. He is suffering from a puzzling phobia that is not in any medical books. Yet.

He had a letter delivered and, like all of us, he looked for clues about the sender.

No address on the back. It was just a white window envelope with a second-class stamp. That worried George.

Individuals do not send window envelopes. So, despite his recent efforts, it was not a love letter. Only businesses, he reasoned, send those envelopes. That is so an invoice, for example, can be folded so the recipient’s address is visible.

The crofter, oil worker and Labour Party activist from Back put the unopened envelope high up on a shelf and began to agonise over who would be demanding cash. If he opened it, he would be morally obliged to pay it, he decided. But who sent it?

The postmark was unclear. It wasn’t the council or the taxman, as they have brown identifiable envelopes. Must be a local company. Oh heck.

After a few days, the strain got to poor George. He stopped going for a pint. He stayed in, fretting.

Then, the other morning, at 3am, he snapped. Bolting upright in bed, he realised he had to end his torment. He paced the floor for a while then, pouring with sweat, he grabbed the envelope and ripped it open.

It was a shock demand, all right. It was a note asking him to fill in a survey about which party he was going to vote for at the next elections. It was signed by our SNP MP and MSP Angus MacNeil and Alasdair Allan respectively.

How ironic the SNP pair had, through no fault of their own, made George Gawk suffer the worst few days of his life. Don’t laugh, but George concedes he may have an extreme fear of . . . window envelopes. How else do you explain what happened?

My researches have found details of the condition known as defenestraphobia, an irrational fear of windows, but nowhere is the variety of the ailment associated with stationery mentioned in medical texts or learned papers. So we have to invent a term. Gawkenvelopophobia, perhaps?

To those of us who know him well, that George Gawk is an enigma pushing the boundaries of medical science is really no surprise at all.

EXPOSED – KEN WEBSTER HYPNOTIST – The TRUTH – What He Truly Feels About ILLEGAL

EXPOSED – KEN WEBSTER HYPNOTIST – The TRUTH – What He Truly Feels About ILLEGAL – UNETHICAL – UNINSURED & UNLICENSED wannabe badly trained UK Street Magical Hypnotists….. (Also Comment By Rolye on Anthony Jacquins “Reality Is Plastic” book – The Manchurian Approach DVD’s” etc and how they are DANGEROUS as he personally DOES NOT KNOW THE LAW as evidenced by his ill informed postings on Uncommon forum and other internet sites..

Hi Guys & Girls,

Due to postings I’ve just discovered on the internet illustrating how many INCORRECTLY TRAINED – DANGEROUS & UNINSURED wannabe Street Hypnotists there are I urge you to send this email to every hypnosis and magical mentalism friend you have…

CHECK THIS VIDEO OUT FIRST…

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/3249046/street_hypnosis_in_uk_is_illegal_plastic_reality_dangers/

And then CHECK THIS EXPLOSIVE SITE OUT:

http://roylehypnotist.wordpress.com/the-very-real-dangers-of-street-hypnosis-reality-is-plastic-the-manchurian-approach-anthony-jacquin-zap-street-trance-other-things-such-as-hypno-attack-encouraing-people-sometimes-unk/

And Here’s what KEN WEBSTER (Chairman Of The Federation of Ethical Stage Hypnotists) has to say about it all:

http://roylehypnotist.wordpress.com/2009/08/25/what-does-ken-webster-the-chairman-of-the-federation-of-ethical-stage-hypnotists-fesh-think-about-illegal-and-dangerous-street-hypnotists/

I’d strongly advise you all to READ EVERY WORD of the above postings and also EVERY COMMENT made about the postings and then decide for yourself….. but REMEMBER THIS…

01) Under 1952 Hypnotism Act you can face a £1,000 Fine…

02) Breaking the Hypnosis Conditions of Licensing Act 2003 could lead to a £10,000 fine and/or six months imprisonment for some involved and ultimately mega bad press and litigation agains the hypnotist….

03) KEN WEBSTER has issued a statement (see posting above) confirming that my concerns are correct and that these ill trained UNI|NSURED and UNLICENSED wannabe hypnotists are both potentially dangerous whilst also being ILLEGAL….

04) NUmerous UK Councils have issued statements (see above links) confirming this to be correct and that THE UK STREET MAGIC HYPNOTIST’S are ILLEGAL – UNLICENSED AND UNINSURED…

I’d say that also makes them wholly UNETHICAL and IRRESPONSIBLE… But hey what do you expect when your sold a product (say Plastic Book or DVD) which does not cover UK LAWs….

And thats why my Special Xmas offer COVER’S ALL UK HYPNOSIS LAWS (and all loopholes) together with isurance details and such like… So to BE A LEGAL – HONEST AND SAFE ETHICAL HYPNOTIST Secure your Future now by visiting….

http://roylehypnotist.wordpress.com/2009/11/11/xmas-2009-stage-street-clinical-hypnosis-nlp-life-coaching-mentalism-bumper-training-package-offer/

More and more people are hiring a Life Coach, like me, to help them improve different aspects of their lives. Whether you want a more successful career, better relationships, a fitter body… finding the right mentor can help you get what you want and even exceed your expectations.

After years of experience and many success stories, here is what I, personally, recommend you look for in your coach so you can get the most out of the experience:

1- Look for a certified and accredited coach.

While I don’t have my certificates on display in my office, I do show my accreditation logo on my website, and you can refer to The Irish Institute of NLP “NLP Coaches” section, where you will find me listed.

However, it is important you note that a certificate does not automatically make someone a good coach. And in all my years as a coach not one of my clients has ever asked me to show them my certs.

2 - Experience counts, and results count more.

Look for real testimonials and success stories. Thanks to mine, most of my clients come to me referred by current or past clients who have achieved results that surpassed their expectations.

3 - Talk to your potential coach before you make an appointment.

And I don’t mean by email. Before I make an appointment with you I will call you and spend a good twenty minutes finding out if you are right for me, and also if I am right for you.

Because I only take a limited amount of new clients every month, this screening process allows me to know if we connect as people, and also if you have the right attitude and are ready to do what it takes in order to get the results you want.

I assure you any questions you may have will be answered before you decide to book your coaching programme.

4 – Although life coaching can help you in a variety of areas in your life, most coaches have a specialty.

For instance, I can coach you in areas such as: time management, confidence, motivation, business goals, smoking cessation, fear and phobias, etc…

And due to my background in the Health & Fitness industry, I am passionate about helping you get healthier and fitter. So, I my specialty is stress management, weight loss goals, motivation, and craving busting.

My mission is to help you achieve your goals in these areas in record time.

5 - Your coach should walk the talk.

You coach should ont only be super passionate about helping you, but also walk the talk!

One of the main keys to my success as a coach is that I practice what I preach. And I am committed to constantly improving my skills so I can provide you with the most up to date and effective nlp and life improvement tools so you can get even better results, faster.

Would you hire a personal trainer who looked less than amazing? I know I wouldn’t… So, whatever you coach’s specialty is, look for evidence.

6 – Find out what your coaching programme involves before you make your decision.

Cheaper does not equal better, and vice versa. However, make sure you find out what you are going to get for your money before you commit.

In my case, although I do offer individual coaching sessions, my most popular package is my 4 session coaching programme. This involves 4 one and a half hour-long sessions, unlimited email support, access to my Delite Blog, free reports and articles, and discounts on a variety of things, such as future coaching sessions, products, seminars, webinars, etc…

What is getting what you want worth to you?

7 - Nice does not necessarily equal good.

One of my clients once said to me “You are not nice, but you are good!”.

I take this as a compliment. Even though I actually happen to be a nice person, my main objective is to help you get what you want, at all costs.

This means you may be challenged and may have to get out of your comfort zone. Sometimes it means tears, sometimes it means laughter… ultimately, it means you get what you want.

I hope these tips help and as always, your comments are more than welcome!

Thanks,

Anna

“I have been in a direct selling company that I am passionate about for over nine years, but have always under-achieved because of the dread I feel when making follow up calls.

After having been to other NLP practitioners, I finally went to Jayne. In sessions with others, I felt like I was the one who had come to up with the answers as to why a childhood incident involving the phone was still affecting me decades later. With Jayne, it was a whole different story.

With Jayne, she just talked to me, asked me questions, and asked me to relax. It didn’t feel difficult, or really like I had to do anything. She was really listening, and when she came across the root issue, she snapped her fingers and I swear I changed in an instant.

I now do dozens of follow up calls a week without blinking an eye! Thanks to Jayne for curing my “phone-aphobia”!

I no longer have phone-a-phobia!”

I have an intense phobia of any collection of hair outside of a human or animal’s body.

Living in a sorority with fifty women meant that after 4pm on Thursday-Saturday nights, I had to cover my eyes walking into the bathroom which had been taken over by brushes, combs, straighteners, curlers and HAIRBALLS.

This is a phobia I have ignored for many a moon because I didn’t think it was serious. I thought that hairballs were simply things I could live without rather than things that induced dry-heaving.

Until last week. I was with some girlfriends watching a movie, when my curly red-headed friend pulled a giant knot out of her own head. I began squealing and she hid it from me, laughing. But I knew it was there. The hair ball. Plotting evil. To fall in my shoe or touch my finger. Waiting. Watching.

Sitting at a pub tonight, the same evil red-head and another friend began discussing this phobia. Again, the dry-heaving and the covering of the mouth and the hacking.

There is NOTHING in this world that upsets me more than a giant ball of hair. I don’t know if this is a good thing. I don’t know where it came from. I don’t know when it will leave. All I know is that it is keeping me from my dream as a professional Celebrity Hair Braider.

Do you have phobias?

no.. i am not getting hitched. but i am using this little wedding rhyme for the theme of today’s post! but FIRST i would like to reflect back on some of the motivational tips you guys left on yesterday’s post.. because daaaang i have some clever readers!

sharing time:

deb: “I think it’s about re-committing and just mother f-ing DOING it!”

jenna:”I motivate myself by thinking of how exciting it will be to see how proper eating and training will postitively affect my body.”

nicci: “I motivate myself with a reward at the end of the month. Not food related but a nice pedi or a new shirt. Sometimes going and buying 3 magazines or a new book.”

lizzy:”i do what you did and just list out the things i know i need to work on. having that list out in front of me is what helps”

allison: “I need to dive right back into it, otherwise ‘vacation mode’ lasts for weeks”

tay: “It’s super hard to get BOT, but I go day by day and it gets easier! I think about how much better I’ll feel once I feel clean and on track again.”

ildie: “Try setting mini goals. Things you want to accomplish at the end of every week instead of at the end of the 7 weeks. Might be easier to meet them and then feeling good about succeeding should motivate you to keep at it. I find that this works the best for me. I try and set a mini goal for every week.”

susan: “Part of the reason why I’m tracking calories again. Maybe it will be helpful to tighten things up just to get me through the holiday season. At least Christmas is full of turkey, which is the best lean protein there is I guess just realizing that you’re doing it and changing it is the first step in the right direction…”

naomi: “I always get motivated when I go to the gym, this is why i never workout at home…even if I am not in the mood, once I get there I always have a great workout, seeing everyone else work so hard motivates me to work even HARDER than them!”

paige: “I just do it. I don’t have any real words of wisdom here. I just…do it. Coercion I guess? lol”

kristin: “when I need to get back on track- list, list, list! And I’ll write down what I’m eating (NOT kcals, just the food) for a couple weeks to make sure I am balanced. But no more- getting obsessive is no good!
I also like to switch up the exercise, which is always a fun way to kick it up.”

andrea: “I remind myself of how much better I feel when I work out right and eat clean. I also write my meals and workouts into my day planner. That way they are an appointment I can’t miss…”

holly: “i think just continuing on with healthy habits – everytime i try to compensate for overeating/not exercising but doing the opposite, it never ends up well. just resume healthy habits and all shall be fine.”

low: “make a list of attainable things I can do to help. Maybe it’s not everything I’d ideally like to be doing, but it’s the stuff I know I can accomplish and that will take me closer to my goal.”

kailey: “I assess the situation when I’m in it. Am I really hungry, or is this just a habit I’ve created? Is that what I really want? Do I feel like feeling like crap after I eat this whole box of crackers? Nah. That normally helps, but then again I try not to be stringent or too hard on myself.”

katie: “I have started trying on my bathing suit more than once a week to motivate myself. I sometimes disgust myself, but it sure motivates my butt into gear.” <—this was my favorite tip!

erika: “I am in that mode myself and have resorted to counting some cals. I know, bad, but I am at the point where I am viewing any amount of almond butter as ok bc it is good for you. I like to leave out the fact that 6 TBS is NOT good for you. So counting works for me to get on track…”

dorothy: “think about how great i feel after i eat super healthy all day and how stupid it would be to ruin it for a piece of cake or (hehe) vanilla bean ice cream”

taysa: “I usually keep around inspirational pictures, either of myself at a healthy weight or celebrities, etc and put them in front of me wherever I am. Seeing my end-goal helps me feel remotivated.”

angharad: “I tend to just make sure I do lots of exercise (running, yoga and weights for me!) and eat as much fruit/veggies as possible!”

tiffany: “I get motivated by reading about you getting motivated.”

kristi: “When I know I have the support of someone else, I tend to be more motivated and make better choices.”

whew. that was long but SO worth it.. it helped me to go over all the tips again and i hope you all can pull something motivating from this list the next time you need a little nudge!

okay, now onto my day!

something new.

FAST. and then for some reason today i decided to try a totally new combo.. and it. was. incredible. why did i never utilize the chicken option before? no idea. but you can bet the farm (if you have one) that i will be having chicken in my eggs for many a monday to come!

i may or may not have licked the plate.

after dinner i worked on unpacking my room a bit. i was folding a heap of clothes and i found another spider in my room. good thing my brave roommate drew came to the rescue and did away with the creepy crawly. i think he may have been surprised at how much i freaked out over the spider. i HATE spiders. i am definitely arachnophobic. to the max. i am ridiculous when i see spiders. i squeal and make a huge fuss. and it is not an act. i hate spiders. even the ones who can’t hurt me. hfewjkhfcdjkflhew. i have to stop talking about them now. oh yeah, and this should go without saying, but after i found the spider i stopped unpacking. better luck tomorrow, eh?

well i feel like i haven’t had a second to breathe today. wake up, work nearly 12 hours, work out, come home, make dinner, eat, clean, blog. guess i will go to bed and do it all again tomorrow and maybe have a moment to tackle my google reader which is up to almost 300. sorry lovies!

this girl has got to get some sleep.

Qs~

1. what is something old, something new, something borrowed OR something blue in relation to your monday? i already told you all 4 of mine!

2. what phobias do you have? in addiction to arachnophobia, i am also VERY claustrophobic.

So if you have ever read my blog you would know how much I love to share conversations my boss and I have.

The most recent email conversation – On Friday the 13th.

Shelby: – Thought you might enjoy this:
Subject: FW: Friday the 13th: Your Luck Is About to Change

If Friday the 13th is unlucky, then 2009 has been an unusually unlucky year. But your luck is about to change. Today is the last of three Friday the 13ths you’ll have to endure this year. The other two were in February and March. Such a rare triple-threat occurs only once every 11 years.

The origin of the link between bad luck and Friday the 13th is murky. The whole thing might date to Biblical times (the 13th guest at the Last Supper betrayed Jesus). By the Middle Ages, both Friday and the number 13 were considered bearers of bad fortune. In modern times, the superstition permeates society.

Here are five of our favorite Friday-the-13th facts:
1. Fear of Friday the 13th – one of the most popular myths in science – is called paraskavedekatriaphobia as well as friggatriskaidekaphobia. Triskaidekaphobia is fear of the number 13.

2. Many hospitals have no room 13, while some tall buildings skip the 13th floor and some airline terminals omit Gate 13.

3. President Franklin D. Roosevelt would not travel on the 13th day of any month and would never host 13 guests at a meal. Napoleon and President Herbert Hoover were also triskaidekaphobic, with an abnormal fear of the number 13.

4. Mark Twain once was the 13th guest at a dinner party. A friend warned him not to go. “It was bad luck,” Twain later told the friend. “They only had food for 12.” Superstitious diners in Paris can hire a quatorzieme, or professional 14th guest.

5. The number 13 suffers from its position after 12, according to numerologists who consider the latter to be a complete number – 12 months in a year, 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 gods of Olympus, 12 labors of Hercules, 12 tribes of Israel, 12 apostles of Jesus, 12 days of Christmas and 12 eggs in a dozen.

Pythagorean legacy
Meanwhile the belief that numbers are connected to life and physical things – called numerology – has a long history.

“You can trace it all the way from the followers of Pythagoras, whose maxim to describe the universe was ‘all is number,’” says Mario Livio, an astrophysicist and author of “The Equation That Couldn’t Be Solved” (Simon & Schuster, 2005). Thinkers who studied under the famous Greek mathematician combined numbers in different ways to explain everything around them, Livio said.
In modern times, numerology has become a type of para-science, much like the meaningless predictions of astrology, scientists say.

“People are subconsciously drawn towards specific numbers, because they know that they need the experiences, attributes or lessons associated with them, that are contained within their potential,” says professional numerologist Sonia Ducie. “Numerology can ‘make sense’ of an individual’s life (health, career, relationships, situations and issues) by recognizing which number cycle they are in, and by giving them clarity.”

Boss: Interesting!

Shelby: Do you have Paraskavedekatriaphobia?

Boss: Nah… I have arachibutyrophobia.

*I looked that up online.. Fear of getting peanut butter stuck on the roof of your mouth.*

Shelby: LOL I had to look that up. Do you really?

Boss: No… I thought it was weird though. Zemmiphobia is my real issue.

*I looked that one up too.. Fear of naked mole rats*

Shelby: WTF? hahahhahahhaa

Boss:

Shelby: AH!!!! That IS FRIGHTENING!

Boss: I know!!!

Shelby: Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia

Boss: Ok, the irony is that “fear of long words” is in itself an insanely long word. The poor person who has it is going to FREAK OUT each time they have to tell someone what it is that they are afraid of.

…socially anxious.

No, not because I’m beautiful. And I guess the depth of my beauty would depend on who you ask. I’m the kind of gorgeous that my daughter and my best friend would endorse, but your average guy on the street would probably bypass. A somewhat gracefully aging Asian chick. (Not quite as graceful as I’d like, but what can you do?)

I know I said I was going public soon, but upon further reflection (and on the advice of Micah, my writing coach) I’m going to keep a lid on the i.d. for a while longer. As she reminded me this morning, I have extreme issues with sensory overload. Facebook nearly did me in. (See “Facebook Junkie,” one of my earliest March posts. Hell, I haven’t looked in a while, and I’m not that organized. But it may be my first blog entry ever.) The ever practical Micah mentioned that the attention might be overwhelming. She’s got a point. Not that I’m at all famous at the moment, but I’m well known in some circles. And students would be Googling me and finding this blog, and the readership could build beyond what I could handle at the moment.

Man, that sounds arrogant as hell. But it’s not. It’s more like realistic. Like I say in my “about” link, I’ve got a very public career.

So. The sensory overload stuff. I’m the woman who hovers over the phone whenever it rings, screening every call because 1) I hate dealing with telemarketers (I’m too nice, and they can talk me into things I don’t want to buy) and 2) I have a phone phobia (while I can talk on the phone, I don’t like it much; I only feel semi-comfortable in phone conversations with a handful of close friends and family).

Also, I’m that woman who pulls up the hood on her jacket and slides on sunglasses and fools herself into believing that no one could possibly recognize her now. Because she doesn’t want to be recognized. Because that means having a one-on-one conversation. And the idea of it makes her queasy and raises her pulse. If she thinks on it too much, it makes her physically ill. And not because she doesn’t like people, but because she has no idea what to say. She knows if she starts to talk, she’ll break out into a crazed sort of manic flood of nonsense, and she’d rather avoid that and spare you, the hapless social passerby, that kind of shock.

I’m content with my blog experience as it is, and of course once the memoir is published (I’m thinking big here; thinking positive), all bets are off. And who knows? Maybe you can say, “I used to read her blog when she was…” When I was like the Wizard of Oz, maybe. Pre-Toto Discovery.

So, as I thoughtfully write this post, I fully expect for some dude with a mask and a chainsaw to come up behind me with a cheesy grin whispering some sinister words like “say your prayers cause you’re about to die.” Okay, not really, but my peripheral vision is in overdrive and I have looked behind my shoulder once or twice now and I’m only on sentence two. Hmmm…maybe these kinds of thoughts are why I don’t watch scary movies and am still haunted by an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark I saw as kid (Okay, it’s pitiful enough that I was afraid of Are You Afraid of the Dark but it’s even worse that I’m now admitting that the actress in the episode was Melissa Joan Hart – I mean, who could be afraid of Sabrina the Teenage Witch or Hart for that matter – now just a poor, innocent castoff of Dancing with the Stars???). Nonetheless, scary movies (or scary T.V shows, or scary books, or scary <fill in the blank>) and me just don’t mix.

Since I have already made myself look like a loser, I might as well continue revealing my vulnerabilities and fill you in another one of my fears – I am phasmophobic – I am afraid of ghosts. I have been afraid of ghosts for as long as I can remember and, as a child, I would often urge my mom to stand at the top of the stairs to make sure I didn’t get snatched up by a ghost as I ventured into the deep abyss – the basement. Okay, I’m obviously not THAT freaked out now that I’m older (and hopefully a little more courageous), but you can bet your bottom dollar I would still not step foot in a place if I knew it was supposedly haunted.

So in honor of Friday the 13th (imagine you just heard a creepy “mwahaha” echo in the background), I am honoring all of the crazy phobias in the world and urging everyone to come out of the woodwork and not only acknowledge, but also delight in, your fears and phobias. Do you have a common fear like aviophobia (fear of flying) or are you one of those strange people that has appeared on on the Maury Povich Show to be tortured by bundles of yarn in an effort to overcome your linonophobia (fear of string)? Whatever your phobia may be, I say that today, you embrace it! But first, check out this comprehensive list of phobias so you are well-informed of the actual phobia name when you tell your first (and last) date that you are a philematophobic (have a fear of smooching)…yeah, that may be a good one to go ahead and try go get over…

*Disclaimer: If you are phobophobic, I apologize for this post…

There is something totally weird in the air today. I can feel it.

Maybe it’s all the dreary rain, maybe it’s the fact that I had to wait 13 minutes for a train this morning, that I have a ridiculous amount of work to do and the printer copier is broken, that no one has answered one a single one of my e-mails yet today. Maybe it’s that the power went out randomly in half of our office this morning, or that the electrical outlets are inexplicably surging in my room, causing my lights to flicker on and off in the middle of the night….but I can totally tell it’s Friday the 13th.

I’m nervous.

I have always wondered why fear exists. There are all different kinds of fear too–spiders, the

I have always wondered why fear exists. There are all different kinds of fear too–spiders, the dark, heights, the Exorcist moan. There’s even a website http://www.realfears.com/ which has a whole list of fears, although some of them are questionable.

What I want to know is, why are people (ir)rationally afraid of things? There are childhood fears–afraid of the dark, fear of ghosts or ghouls under the bed, dead parents, being chased. Then there are fears that stem from a (traumatizing) experience–dying, being alone, fear of people or specific things. And finally fears that seem to spring out of nowhere–where do these come from? How is someone afraid of plants? Of wind? Of thinking?

This is just a mindless rant. I know I’m afraid of being alone. By that, I mean doing things alone like eating by myself, or going to the movies by myself. I like constant company. The irrationality of this fear is mind is that it strikes randomly. I like to be alone when I want to be–when I want to read or study or just explore New York City on my own. But, say for example, I’m with a group of people at the cafeteria, I don’t want to walk alone to get more food. Not because it might come off as me being a fatass, but because I just don’t want to be alone. Why???

I also think its part of human nature to be afraid, especially when it comes to the unknown. Death is a perfect example. We have no actual knowledge, no substantial proof of what happens after we die. By happening I mean where our soul goes. Do we even have a soul? But I digress. Religion teaches us that while the body decays in the earth, the soul goes somewhere, where it will be happy or tortured. This explanation gives enough reason to be afraid of dying–how does someone know whther they will have a happy afterlife or a tortured afterlife?

I also think that fear, specifically fear of the unknown, comes from a degree of lack of trust. I know there is xenophobia, which is fear of foreigners/strangers. This makes some sense to me– you don’t know these people, you don’t know how they would interact with you. And since you don’t know, you’re afraid. Afterall, humans don’t like to be hurt. What if these foreigners/strangers hurt you?

Human beings like being in control. We like knowing things, or knowing as much as possible about everything. If we don’t possess knowledge about something, someone, someplace–it drives us crazy (I think). We feel stupid, ignorant, out of control, frustrated. These are all different feelings in a range of them, but I think they’re good generalizations when it applies to wanting to be in the know.

So maybe that’s what fear is all about. Not knowing causes us to be afraid. But then how do you explain agoraphobia or hydrophobia?

What are your thoughts?

That’s me and flying I am afraid. I used not to mind too much. People can attest to this. The same people who might say to me now that I should just pull myself together and stop acting more and more like one crazy lady! But I believe I am right to be afraid and quantum mechanics explains why.

I promise never to mention quantum mechanics or physics hereafter, except perhaps in relation to horseracing and the Kent coast which we can see from here (but not always – tree in a forest falling?), but today I will explain and then park the thought.

The fuss I make of driving in the dark intrigued me. I don’t like it and it makes me drive with extreme caution. In the daylight I am almost blase - I can even be found speeding. So why the in-the-dark collywobbles; surely I am not scared of it? I think it is this. Quantum mechanics says that (and I don’t confess to understand much) whilst an event is in motion there are any number of probabilities that exist equally until the event is observed. So when I drive in the daylight I am driving with the probability that I will arrive safely, get out of the car and that is the end of the panoply of possibility. Of course I am driving with many other possibilities and outcomes too, but they are reduced given the daylight. At night I am also living with the probabilities of my imagination – that the road will run out, that I will not see something, that I will fall asleep and so on. In quantum mechanics these probabilities of the imagination count, as amplitude. So my fear of driving in the dark now seems a rational response to the range of probabilities alive in my mind.

Flying, on this basis, creates so many probabilities that I can’t actually cope! I can’t look into the pilots’ eyes before I get on the plane, get them breathalysed and ask if they have had a row with their spouse. I can’t check the fuselage, the engines, that the doors are closed properly. Every bizarre and statistically unlikely plane accident is a possibility in my mind. My rational mind tells me that the likelihood is that I will arrive in one piece, but on a wave and particle level there are many chances that I won’t.

This links to an “interesting” forum for pilots. I read this a bit when the Air France place tragically and unexpectedly plummeted into the sea earlier this year. I am not saying it is recommended reading but there is a thread on the whole allegedly drunk pilot arrested at Heathrow situation!

http://www.pprune.org/rumours-news-13/

Actually, with such gems as this:

”Can a regular drinker fly a plane? Surely. But, do we want someone who can “function” half-snockered at the pointy end?”

if you don’t read it you are missing out!

I think I have to conclude that it is not that I am scared of flying; it is that I am scared of not flying in a thousand different ways.

P.S. This is one of the ways (plane hits warthog, Harare).

________________________________________ Having trained with Geoffrey Ronning, Alexander Duvall and other Hypnotic Experts I can honestly say that Royle’s “There’s No Such Thing as Hypnosis” is in my opinion a great set of DVD’s produced as a quality package. They tell the “whole” story. The “complete” deal and contain much information I’ve never found on any other course or in any books! I suspect that many hypnotists will not like what Royle has to say at first, however, If they can open their own minds to get past this hurdle they will learn a lot more than they bargained for. On the other hand maybe it is best they don’t buy them, then those that do will stand out from the crowd. MARTIN COLE www.martincole.com
