Credo che più o meno la conoscano tutti, segno che la dipendenza seriale forse è più diffusa di quel che si pensi.

E’ il cavallo di battaglia di uno dei personaggi più divertenti della storia seriale moderna: Phoebe Buffay, una dei protagonisti di Friends.

La maggior parte di voi la conoscerà questa canzone nella sua versione italianizzata, ovvero Gatto Rognoso.

Vi propongo due versioni: il videoclip ufficiale della canzone (una vera chicca che ho appena scovato in Rete) e la versione italianizzata ovviamente (la potete ascoltare dopo la sigla di Friends – se trovaste una versione migliore segnalatelo nei commenti!).

As I’ve mentioned before, Tobias used to have a “poo in fur” issue. He’s been doing a great job now that he has a bigger litter box and a stay-at-home mom, but let’s face it… somethimes he’s still a little stinky. Cue Phoebe Buffay.

Just as Phoebe explains, it’s not their fault. I know that if I had a body covered in stink-holding fur, was forced to poop in a box full of sand, and my only option was to bathe myself via my tongue, I wouldn’t be the nicest smelling thing either. That being said, I have a few of my tricks for keeping Tobias’ self-esteem up so that he doesn’t get depressed when he stinks up the house.

1. Bath and Body Works Wallflowers

These things work wonders… plus they’re usually on sale (right now 2 for $20)!  There are three different odor eliminating scents, but I think that the citrus one is the least headache-inducing. We keep Tobias’ litter box in our bathroom, so the wallflower is workin’ double duty.

2. Bath and Body Works Scentportable

I make Man BFF actually WANT to clean out the litter box.

These come in the same scents as the odor eliminating wallflowers, but you can stick them anywhere. Even though we already have the wallflower in the bathroom, we’ve also stuck one of these in the linen closet where we actually have his litter box. It works, smells really good, and is only $5 (lasts up to six weeks).

3. Baking Soda

I sprinkle some baking soda in Tobias’ litter box before I change the litter and it works great. Cheap solution (I bought a box for $.49 today) if you can’t afford fancy smell-soaker-uper litter!

4. Unscented Baby Wipes

Toby is a persian who has major eye drainage. I had been spending $10 on a boxes of Kitty Wipes but then I figured they were no more than baby wipes. Today I bought a big container of sensitive, unscented, natural baby wipes at Walmart for $1.88. Steal! After I wipe his eyes, I use the rest of the wipe to do a quick ear and nose cleaning.

To many Americans, Phoebe brings to mind the wacky yet lovable character of Phoebe Buffay on the popular SitCom, Friends. To the British, she is of an upper crust trendy sort, to Christians, she is an admirable woman in the New  Testament, and to the Greeks, she is a classic, featured in both the Greek Orthodox calendar of saints as well as in Greek myth. The name is derived from the Greek Phoibus which means “bright, light.” In Greek Mythology, Phoebe was a pre-Olympic goddess, a Titan. She was the goddess of the moon and the consort of her own brother Coeus, from him, she mothered Asteria and Leto and was believed to be the grandmother of Artemis and Apollo. The Greeks later associated her as one and the same with the goddess Artemis. Phoebe was often used as an epithet for Artemis, while the masculine form, Phoebus was used for Apollo. Phoebe was also associated with the Oracle of Delphi. There are a few other Phoebes mentioned in ancient Greek religion, one was a Heliade nymph, another was the daughter of Leucippus and Philodice. Phoebe, daughter of Leucippus, and her sister Hilaeira, were priestesses to Artemis and Athena. They were both betrothed to Idras and Lynceus. Castor and Pollux, the divine twins, were so impressed by their beauty, that they fell in love with the two maidens and carried them off for themselves. Idras and Lynceus, outraged, sought the two immortals out but were both slain. Nevertheless, Phoebe married Pollux. It was also the name of a sister to Leda.

In the New Testament the name is borne by a woman of Cenchrae, many scholars argue that she was a deaconess, the Catholic Church especially seems to support this stance. She is also believed to have brought Paul’s Epistle of the Romans to Rome. She is a canonized saint in both the Catholic and Greek Orthodox Churches, both rites hold her feast on September 3rd.

Fast forward to the 1500s and you will find the name Phebe, (an older English spelling), as the name of one of Shakespeare’s characters in his play, As You Like It. In the modern American Classic, she is the younger sister of Holden Caulfied in J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye. Polish Science Fiction writer, Jacek Duraj, uses the name as an acronym for post-human beings in his novel Perfekcyjna niedoskonałość.

Phoebe is also the name of a genus of evergreen tree, plus its the name of a species of bird and a moon of the planet of Saturn. Other forms of the name include the modern Greek Phoebi, the Biblical Greek, Phoibi and the Germanic Febe. In Britain and Wales, Phoebe stood at # 30 in the 2007 popularity charts, in Scotland, she comes in at # 94. In 2008, Phoebe was the 328th most popular name in the top 1000.

I came across my eleven-year-old brother watching an episode of ‘Friends’ today (“The One Where Ross Finds Out”, to be precise). Confused, I asked mi madre when exactly he started watching the programme. Immediately, she said that he shouldn’t be. I asked why, and she said because it’s too risque and promotes a bad lifestyle. I could sort of understand that (I mean, he is eleven, and I dunno, I can see why a parent wouldn’t want their child watching a show like ‘Friends’). But then she said she didn’t particularly like teenagers watching it either (which I found weird, because I have every season on DVD, some of which my mum&dad bought for me, and I know for a fact that she enjoys them herself).

Normal for a mother I guess, but just while we’re on the subject…it so isn’t. :@

Firstly, whilst it has its fair share of promiscuous sex and whatnot, but in the end ALL of the characters marry (well, except Joey, but I like to think that he eventually settled down )…Chandler and Monica tie the knot, Phoebe marries Mike, and I’m going to assume that Ross and Rachel have a second wedding, eventually. Secondly, aside from alcohol (which there really all that much of), it does not promote substance abuse…in fact, it argues against it. The ‘Friends’ try to persuade Chandler to give up smoking, which they succeed in, and none of the six do drugs (aside from Ross and his brief pot stint all those years ago). Finally, ‘Friends’, as you should be able to guess, strongly promotes the value of strong friendship. The six are there for each other no matter what (“I’ll be there for yooouuu”), and that forms the basis of the show.

So NO, Friends does NOT promote an unhealthy lifestyle. Argument over.

Dr. Martens are back, baby!

These shoes were created in 1945 by Doctor Klaus Maertens for comfortable wear. Apparently almost every teenager had a pair in the late 90s. They’re not the prettiest shoes you have ever seen, but in the 90s, people only cared about comfort. Baggy shirts and jeans are comfortable; throw them on. Now that I mention it, I could really use some Doc Martens. I’m wearing leather shoes at the moment and one of my toes is killing me.

I see students wear them as school shoes. Yeah. School shoes were a huge hit in the 90s.

I find these knee high ones much more edgier.

Dr. Martens have released fluoro colours for the new era. I read in some fashion magazine it’s great to wear these with miniskirts. NO thanks. Try wearing them with acid-washed jeans. Vomit. How ’80s would you look, huh? If you haven’t noticed, I don’t like 80s fashion. Especially not the fluoro colours.

Vintage black is the way to go. For females; wear them with your Little Black Dress or other winter dresses to give the feminine look some edge. For males; try not to wear it with too much black as you will look gothic. Wear them with patterned pants and plain shirt. If you think you can’t pull it off, jeans are always a good but safe option.

I know this has nothing to do with the economy, layoffs, pink slips or surviving the recession. However, for me, TV is a very important escape tactic, so I think it’s relevant to comment on it.

I never gave “How I Met Your Mother” a snowball’s chance in hell on CBS. But, what do I know? Now it’s syndicated! And it’s on Lifetime. Which is why I’ve started watching it. And I love it! Maybe it’s because I’m sooooo tired of “Friends” re-runs, but darn it, I’m going to go ahead and say it. I think I like “How I Met Your Mother” more than “Friends”.

With that, I give you 10 Reasons I Think “HIMYM” is Better Than “Friends”. Feel free to disagree!

1. They hang out in bars. I mean, c’mon: Coffee all the time? Boring! There’s a reason you don’t go to happy hour at a coffee house
2. NYC apartments are shown realistically to scale
3. Marshall and Lily not nearly as annoying as Ross and Rachel
4. They all have real jobs
5. Speaking of jobs, at least HIMYM has given Bob Saget a regular paycheck
6. Jason Segel. I admit I began developing a crush on him before “I Love You, Man” released
7. I hung out with people just like them when I lived in NYC and would willingly choose hang out with them again. Unlike Joey Tribbiani and Phoebe Buffay. Yes, I know they’re funny, but day after day with a guido and flighty masseuse would drive me batty

20+ Questions with Pau Gasol

A quote from Pablito that I thought should have been caught on video:

Gasol: “Friends.” I also liked “Sanford and Son,” which was very funny to me, and I used to watch “Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” I know the intro song. “In West Philadelphia, born and raised…”

He really should have sang the Fresh Prince song in whole. It would have been adorable. I’m sure the Pau girls would concur. Fresh Prince was such a staple TV show growing up in the 90’s, and it never gets old to me… I still watch it on Nick at Nite.

And who doesn’t love Friends? I have every single season on DVD. I never really got into it when it was still on; probably because I was too young to understand the jokes when it first came on in the mid-90’s. But my cousin gave me the second season of Friends on DVD for Christmas one year and I was hooked. I bought every season and watched the series in its entirety. It was a great show and I could never get tired of it… I love Phoebe (who is Pau’s favorite character) and her silly little songs… “Smelly cat… Sme-llly cat… what are they feeding you??” LMAO!

Anyway, the Lakers have an away game against the OKC Thunder… good luck to them… and I’ll definitely be watching!

I have been musing recently on the poor reputation of female singer-songwriters. Not all female singer-songwriters have a poor reputation, obviously: Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, Lauryn Hill (not in the traditional sense, but you know what I mean). But I’ve seen a few lately and been questioned about what I do myself, so I thought I’d share my thoughts.

At a gig the other week, I saw what other people in the audience described as “the British Phoebe”. I’m not going to name names, but yes she was. Which was funny for maybe the first verse of each song, e.g. “you’re a tool” (a song about an ex or ex-boss, basically a man-slating litany set to music) and a ditty about her scooter and how it’s much better to get around with in London town. It seemed to entertain a sizeable slice of the crowd (her friends and family). But the songs that slagged off her exes just made those of us who didn’t know her feel a bit uncomfortable.

Then recently I got asked by a bloke whether I wrote poisonous lyrics about bastard exes and acrimonious break-ups. As we were on a date, this question did not bode well. No I don’t, I answered, I think that’s quite small-minded and boring. Then I went on a couple of dates with another guy who really pissed me off and now feel quite tempted to lampoon him in some kind of public way, but then, what am I really going to write about – dates that were a waste of time, a man who is a waste of life (genuinely his words, not mine)? If I’m uninspired before putting pen to paper, then I can imagine the soporific effect the subject would have on the audience.

Which begs the question – why are there so many whiny songs from female singer-songwriters about their exes? (Alanis Morissette I’m talking to you). Surely personal matters in your life should remain personal. I’m all for confessional songwriting, but only when it’s confessing things that other people can relate to, not a rant at someone who you used to be in a relationship with, but now they’ve stopped talking to you, so the only way you can get their attention is by writing a song about them. For god’s sake, it’s called a break-up because it’s broken, and they don’t deserve any more of your energy or time.

That’s what I mean about the poor reputation of female singer-songwriters. It’s well deserved. Men do stray into this territory – the odd whine from Ben Harper never fails to irritate me, as does Embrace’s entire snivelling back catalogue, but I think many ladies have made man-bashing a signature part of their style. Come on girls – let’s get a bit more inspired.

Mais um post das séries Pensando na morte da bezerra  e Direto do túnel do tempo.

Estava sentada na calçada as 8 e pouquinho da manhã em pleno domingo, esperando (e esperei muuuito tempo, porque nem os táxis trabalham aos domingos) meu transporte para as terras distantes e reparei que há um montão de trevinhos na calçada. Quase dois anos que moro aqui e nunca havia reparado que há um pedação enorme só com trevinhos (tá bom que nem a cor do portão eu sabia). Quando era pequena adorava comer trevinho, até os de 5 folhinhas, que minha avó falou que diziam que dava sorte. Será que se eu achar algum de 5 folhinhas e comer não vou precisar ir trabalhar mais hoje? Eca, tem um coco aqui, ainda bem que eu não comi nenhum. Quando eu era pequena, será que comi algum trevinho com sujeira de animais? Credo, acho que sim, melhor parar de pensar nisso. 
E o pensamento em hiperlink me levou a sorte de ontem do Orkut:  Encontre a felicidade no seu trabalho ou talvez nunca saberá o que é felicidade.

Ahh tá explicada a necessidade de trabalhar tanto nas últimas semanas.

Ando me sentindo a própria escrava parda (o que me lembra que pessoas que não são brancas, nem pretas e nem amarelinhas: são nada aiaiaia, ah é, soy latina).

Se depender disto, serei a pessoa mais feliz do mundo. Mas feliz ou infelizmente, já sei onde encontrar a felicidade. E certamente não será lá (somente lá). E nem adianta vir com a piadinha: Ah vai ficar rica biriririr, a frase mais verdadeira (existe mais ou menos verdade??) é: Quem trabalha não tem tempo de ficar rico.

Lembrando de escravos (pensamentos em hiperlinks), lembrei de uma amiga da época do colégio (falarei novamente sobre ela quando publicar um post que está escrito há alguns meses – pronto publiquei).

Ela falou tanto em um filme, tanto tanto que não sosseguei enquanto não assisti. E ô filminho difícil de encontrar:

Amistad. Ela delirava no protagonista (um negão gigante e agora namora um branquelo baixinho). Mas sinceramente não lembro mais do filme. Nem sequer lembro se gostei ou não. E de verdade, não estou com vontade de assistir novamente não (lembrar de colocar lista de filmes que quero assistir este ano).

E isso foi em 1999.

Naquela época não trabalhava. Não ficava trancafiada em uma sala sem janelas, sem ver a luz do dia (ô drama) e aos domingos ia para as quadras e piscinas, sabia quando chovia, fazia sol, assistia o amanhecer e o anoitecer e via Órion pela janela do meu quarto toda noite (de primavera e verão).

Mas desde aquela época, algumas coisas aconteciam só comigo.

Exemplos:

Todas mocinhas pulando a janela da sala e só o meu blusão enroscava na “maçaneta” na janela;

Tiro ao alvo e só a minha rapadura (contar história das rapadurinhas)ficava presa nos canos acima da lousa;

O pombo fez tiro ao alvo em mim (detalhe: irmã malvada 1 na frente e irmã malvada 2 atrás, se andasse rápido uma iria ver, se andasse devagar a outra é quem veria – explicar melhor posteriormente);

Dez anos depois:
Metade do vidro de azeite entornou no meu prato.
Meu pai derramou a embalagem de Tarantella inteira na minha perna.
Na hora de ir trabalhar, entornei sucrilho com leite em cima do teclado. Provavelmente o teclado tem uma certa alergia a lactose e parou de funcionar. 
Fui trabalhar com um sucrilho grudado na calça.
Por isso estou proibida de comer na zona de segurança (invenção minha há mais de 10 anos (que eu não deveria ter inventado) - circunferência ao redor do Jordan que apresenta risco de morte para o mesmo).

É, algumas coisas não mudam em dez anos, a (má) sorte talvez seja uma delas.
