If you want to experience a taste of the history of Phoenix, then be sure to visit the Arizona Capitol Museum. It offers more than twenty exhibits that tell Arizona’s story. This building once served as the state capitol building. Think of it as a “time capsule” in that it contains documents and other artifacts that bring the history of Arizona to life.

One of the most fascinating exhibits features the story of the USS Arizona, the naval battleship that was sunk during Pearl Harbor. This is a great attraction for families to visit and is listed as one of the ten best Phoenix attractions according to www.10best.com

The Arizona Capitol Museum is located at 1700 W. Washington in Phoenix. For more information visit: http://www.lib.az.us/museum/index.cfm The museum is free and is open from 9 AM to 4 PM Monday-Friday.

If you or your family enjoys historic sites, you may want to visit Heritage Square, also in Phoenix. It is a Victorian-style city block that dates back to the 1800’s. It features shops, museums and restaurants.

Heritage Square is located at 115 N. Sixth St. in Phoenix. For more information visit: www.phoenix.gov/PARKS/heritage.html Hours vary by business.

Manchester Orchestra, The Strongest & Most Emotional Band Out Of These 4 BANDS & THAT IS SAYING A LOT!!!! Not to mention Andy Hull is also part of the sickest side project since Team Sleep & not only is it painfully emotional, intense & beautiful – But, it & he has it planned out so well. They have 2 Albums out right now & their 3rd Album will be the end to a trilogy amongst a concept regarding a Captain of an old fishing Boat who sets sail and finds the thing that he misses, loves, hates & believes in.. Along with insane Sea Creatures that I won’t even ruin for than fan that will look into this. I have so much respect for Mr. Andy Hull & I am going to try and get Andy to give me my first interview ever for my little Blog which will become an actual website once all of my money isn’t going towards helping others. I figure the Karma Police will eventually come & bail me out of these shackles..

<img class="alignnone" title="Nicely Done.
Mimicking Birds – Nate Lacy Was Already My Favorite Songwriter In The Indie Game & Then My Favorite Musician From My Favorite Band (American Band & Almost Global) To Sign Them To Glacial Pace. If You Don’t Know Who I Am Talking About, Then You Apparently Need To Do Some Research~!!

Phoenix (One of my Top Albums Of The Year! There Is Something About This Solo Artist Who Obviously Treats Music As An Art & His Title Of Musician More Like A Status Of An Artist. This Doesn’t Sound Right, But I Don’t Know What Makes Sense With This Individual & I Would Put A Lot Of Money On The Fact That Is Exactly How He Is Playing His Cards..
I Hope You Check Them Out & Give Me Some Feedback On These Four Bands & Better Yet, Who You Think The Best Young Bands Are & It Would Be Cool To Hear Of A Few More Like HDAwake, Artists That Are Still UNDER THE RADAR

I have to say, it’s been a personally challenging week, so when Will and Tom asked me if I wanted to go see Thee Fair Ohs and Wavves I jumped on the opportunity. Nice Nice were playing as well but I had no idea who they were so we kinda missed their set, oops. Thee Fair Ohs were so happy, I think their joy was infectious because I was gyrating away to their tropical psychedelic fuzzzz. Click here to read an interview Tom did with Thee Fair Ohs for Dazed and Confused magazine.

Meanwhile Wavves were pure stoner-surf noise, cajoling the already sticky and sweaty kids clad in AA hoodies to mosh and crowd surf. Frontman Nathan Williams asked if anyone knew where to get good weed before playing Weed Demon. Apparently they’re going to have an afterparty (weed anyone?) at the Barfly in Camden with Fucked Up, which I’m clearly missing because I’m here instead uploading free music for you.

On the way home though I ran into the lovely Veronica So of TEETH!!!, turns out they were playing a free gig at the Old Blue. Needless to say I obliged. They played some of their ‘unedited slash unfinished’ new stuff which sounded like something from a really fun video game love song – probably one of their most melodic / poppy tune so far, but still awesome nevertheless. I am a through and through TEETH!!! groupie.

But anyway, here are some good shiz from tonight (and some extra extraz) for you to download, so you can pretend like you were there with me in spirit, getting elbowed and trod on with beer in your hair but feeling really, really HAPPY. Bring on the weekend!

Frenchies are coming back in the new year! Versailles-based indie pop-rockers Phoenix are coming to play a few live shows for us again in March 2010. I had so much fun seeing them earlier this year at the Enmore Theatre. I still get shivers just remembering the euphoria of the crowd. If you missed out on the ultimate dance party/gig Phoenix experience, be sure to get your hands on their Hordern Pavilion tickets which go on sale Thursday 10 December. No doubt their first Sydney show for Tuesday 2 March will be a sell-out, with more dates to follow.

Steven and I discovered Rosita’s by chance when we visited in May. We were going in circles after a long day, not particularly optimistic day of apartment hunting. Something about this place caught our attention, and inside we found a cozy space with bright artwork and a pond complete with fountain and fish. The staff is great, and the food – amazing (but don’t just take my word for it). We vowed not only to come back but also to bring anyone who visits us – we’ve already managed to take two of my classmates, and somehow end up there at least once a month on a date. Favorite places like this are part of what turns a city into a home, and I’m glad I have pictures already. Hopefully there will be more taken at Rosita’s (and in Phoenix overall), and not just from next summer when I plan to take my parents on their visit. (They’ll be long past due – this sort of food food is one of the few things NOT available in Taupo, NZ)

Anyway, in a near-future post, I’ll be back to my informal photo categories with my most flexible imaginary category, “pictures of pictures” or POP. At first, I was going to include one Rosita’s picture in that larger post. Then, as I browsed through the last month’s material for that one good picture of Rosita’s, I found one and then another… and another… and another… And realized Rosita’s probably deserves a post of its own in more ways than one. And now, on to the photos…

Phoenix are one of those bands that are very hard not to like, especially after releasing Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix an almost flawless pop album that was also their most critically acclaimed release.

They came to Australia very briefly this year and are coming back for a tour(minus Adelaide) in March. Not too thrilled about the choice of Festival Hall, which is a bit of a shit hole but it should be good. The tickets go on sale December 10 and Miami Horror are supporting.

Monday March 1 – Brisbane Convention Centre
Tuesday March 2 – Sydney Hordern Pavilion
Friday March 5 – Melbourne Festival Hall
Saturday March 6 – Perth Belvoir Amphitheatre

I actually fell in love with them when I saw their performance on SNL. After that, I really got into Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and “Lisztomania” quickly became my favorite song on the album. Just listen to an album and commit some of your time to doing so and eventually, the songs pick you. Here’s an awesome acoustic version of “Lisztomania” for you to enjoy before seeing live at ACX in a few weeks:

Not even Thanksgiving yet, and I’ve sworn off the Arrowhead area until 2010. Which is a bummer, considering that I live there. Don’t know how I’m going to navigate the season, but I will at all cost avoid the mall and immediate vicinity. Traffic is crazy, the stores all look like Rudolph threw up in there, and people are not real plesant when you get between them and the last snowman dish towels.

Other neighborhoods all over the country have the same over-abundance of shopping centers, malls and chain restaurants, but the one in which you live always seems worse. So every day of this advent season, I will look forward to heading north, to this corner of 39th Ave and Happy Valley Rd., where my daily drive to work takes me over the mountain and through the Thunderbird Park state preserve area. In the Christmas jungle, a little bit of wilderness can go a long way.

Its no wonder John the Baptist camped out in the desert for much of his life. It is just breath-taking this time of year, when we are justified in suffering our summer months in misery. (Its possible I may even call friends and family and, as they dig out from under 3 feet of snow, brag that it got down to 60 today and i got to wear a sweater). The beauty of the desert landscape has an absurd spiritual value, its impossibility making it miraculous. Even though our “wilderness” corner here at Foothills Christian Church has a few hundred thousand people camped nearby and a brand new Safeway across the street, we are still just a little further into the desert than most of the metro area. We’ve got one foot up the mountain (hence the aptly named “Foothills Christian Church”) and we can see salvation on the other side. We can see landscape that’s not landscaped. We can see open space and from right here, we can just hear a voice calling us into that wilderness; prepare the way of the Lord.

If you feel like your preparation could use a lot less running and a lot more being still this year, I’ve got good news. If you think that preparation is less about those snowmen dish towels and more about your heart, I’ve got good news. If you know that God appreciates presence more than presents, I’ve got good news. If your thirsty soul craves a little bit of wilderness this year, I know a guy who can show us the way. In the wild, in the unknown: there is no Dow to determine your worth; no traffic; no politics; no swine flu; very few snow man dish towels. But there is good news.

Tis the season to share that good news with our neighbors. People of faith live, always, on the edge between Christ and culture, walking the thin line between urban sprawl and blessed wilderness. Can you glimpse the coming reign of God, just over the mountain? Where will you spend this holiday season? At Macy’s, or in the desert? Through the mall madness, the traffic jams, the endless compulsion to run faster and buy more, make straight in the desert a highway for your God. Prepare the way of the Lord.

In sfarsit…reusesc pun si eu ceva pe blogul asta.

Sambata si-a lansat primul proiect solo, “State of Mind”.

To the British Museum last weekend for a talk on the art of Yukinobu Hoshino and an introduction to the screening of three Astro Boy episodes.

I worked here many years ago, when the British Library occupied part of the Museum premises including the great round Reading Room, now used for exhibitions. It was nice to work there again, and it made me reflect on how much has changed in our understanding and appreciation of popular culture.

Like almost everyone outside Japan, I’d never heard the word anime back in 1974. Even within Japan, manga eiga, the term used by Toei’s president in 1956 in the trailer for Hakujaden, was still current. Toei’s summer anime movie programmes were branded manga matsuri until about 1990 – but that’s another story. Anime, manga and modern popular culture were equally invisible to me. Japan was a place of samurai, cherry blossom, charmingly quaint costumes and cheap electronics.

The Museum gave me a wider appreciation of times, places and people I knew little or nothing about. Its diversity and strangeness and charm entranced me. This giant cabinet of curiosity, this fabulous imaginarium threaded through with byways and back alleys leading into depths of knowledge I hadn’t even begun to imagine, was mine to explore. The British Museum helped me become who I am, feeding my mind and setting my imagination free to run riot in its inexhaustible playground.

Now, more than thirty years later, I can stand in a gallery surrounded by works of the human imagination and talk to others about them with a fluency and confidence that I owe, in large part, to my surroundings. If you haven’t been there lately, you should. Don’t take my word for it, have a look at the website and see everything that’s on offer.

One of the highlights of talking about Hoshino at the BM was being able to introduce his works done here at the museum in the context that inspired them. A walk through the galleries will take you past many of the artefacts that inspired Professor Munakata’s British Museum Adventure, in Room 3 until 3 January 2010. Hoshino’s work fits the Museum context well: he loves to explore the mysteries behind apparently impenetrable objects. He also weaves his stories into huge, overarching sagas, connecting apparently random individual fragments into metanarratives – the daily work of historians, and the method behind the manga Hoshino cites as a major inspiration, Osamu Tezuka’s Phoenix saga.

Another highlight of the experience for me was being able to contradict the impression given by many widely respected English-language sources, that Hoshino has created only a handful of works. One of the people I chatted to after the talk told me that he’d only been able to find five or six titles listed, and had wondered how someone with such a limited back catalogue was important enough to warrant a display at the British Museum.

The exhibition was based on Hoshino’s interest in dogu, the topic of a concurrent Museum exhibition. The Museum wanted to reflect how dogu were viewed in Japanese popular culture, and they figure in many of Professor Munakata’s manga adventures. Hoshino’s back catalogue is much wider; before Professor Munakata made his debut, his creator was best known for science fiction. Except for his SF masterpiece 2001 Nights, and The Two Faces of Tomorrow, his graphic novel version of James P. Hogan’s story, the majority of his works go unmentioned in English-language sources.

The talks by Paul Gravett and myself at this exhibition, as part of the Comica festival, appear to be the only ones given in English so far. That gives Hoshino an extra affinity with his surroundings. His work is not as well known as it deserves to be in the English-speaking world. Like many of the Museum’s artefacts, its wonderful mysteries are waiting to be discovered by new eyes.

Museums, adventures, books, all begin with a question. Someone picks up an object, or an idea, and wants to know where it comes from and if there’s anything else like it. One of the reasons I was driven to write about anime is that nobody else was doing it, and the books I enjoy writing – and reading – most are the ones that throw some light on unexplored corners. It’s what got me excited back in 1983 about Frederik L. Schodt’s peerless Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics, and Eric P. Nash’s Manga Kamishibai hit exactly the same button this year. It’s why I wanted to write about Osamu Tezuka – so much of his work is unknown to those who speak my language. I was insatiably curious before I worked at the British Museum, but working there reinforced my conviction that finding out things I didn’t know before is not only a wonderful game but a useful one.

So to start the ball rolling, here’s a list of the Hoshino works I’m aware of. I’ve compiled it after a quick comparison of a few European-language and Japanese sources, so there may well be some gaps. I’ve included the transliterated Japanese titles, and noted where I’ve found none but think one may exist. Titles originally written in katakana have been rendered in English. First serial publication and collection publication details would also be useful.

If anyone with time to track down and translate further information would like to add to or correct this list, it would help to extend knowledge of this remarkable artist in the English-speaking manga community.

1971 Sea of Fang (I haven’t yet found a Japanese title)

Public transit is entertaining. I say that in the sickest way possible.

During my approximate 6 hours per week of commute between Tempe and Downtown Phoenix, I see more crazy than a hypothetical love child of Rush Limbaugh and Lady GaGa. Sometimes it’s frightening, but more often it’s ridiculous and incredible.

In my near year of riding the Light Rail, I’ve often found myself texting friends and families photographic proof of the characters I encounter. I decided to spread the love by posting my lurky Light Rail pics to this blog. Get excited.

From extremely common Light Rail Fails– A hobo in an “I love Jesus” hat verbally harassing a 12-year-old, a pair of overweight teens swapping shirts mid-transit, the drunk chick who can’t help but pole dance and consequently face plant when the Rail starts moving, to Light Rail Wins– A wheel-chair bound Priest who gave out bags of candy corn to passengers on Halloween and the hobo who serenaded me and asked for my hand in marriage and a lifetime together with me in his box, there’s never a dull day of LR riding.

This blog is past due for Light Rail Lovers and Loathers alike.

Happy Railing,

If you are looking to do some shopping after Thanksgiving, you might consider shopping Black Friday. There will be plenty of people who are doing the same thing- which will mean more crowds- but the savings may be what you are looking for and worth it in the end.

Here are some of the best places to go in Phoenix if you decide to brave the crowds this year on Black Friday:

KB Toys

Wal-Mart

Special hours: Normally open 24 hours; Black Friday deals are from 5 am-11 am when they have their Door Busters. You can get great deals on electronics, toys, computers, etc.

Wal-Mart is located at 1607 West Bethany Home Road.

Foot Locker
Special hours: 6 am-9 pm

Some tips:

Check all store ads for coupons and specials. This is a great time-saver for you.
Look on the Internet. This way you can find information about Black Friday sales as well as comparison shop.
Make sure you know the store’s return policy as well as restocking fees and warranty information.
