A Home Phone That I Actually Wanted!, May 16, 2011
By
Tony Matthews “Metformin”

This review is from: Panasonic KX-TG7643M dect 6.0 Link-to-Cell Bluetooth Cordless Phone with 3-Handsets (Office Product)
“In today’s world, the home phone has become increasing unnecessary. I had to get a home phone to aide for the security system, so when I researched some cordless phones, I came across this Panasonic device. I don’t care much for a home phone as I have lived without one for several years, but this allows a home phone back in my life.

Link-to-cell is incredible. This feature allows me to answer and make calls using my cell phone. I don’t have to search around the house for the cell…just keep it in the same place. Pairing was extremely simple, but you will need to read the instructions to navigate the hidden settings menu and whatnot(this is just a one time thing). I literally walked in the house and it paired automatically in about 30 seconds. The memory holds 3034 contacts. Is that too much? Maybe..but during setup, I just let my phone (Droid Incredible) bluetooth all my 400 contacts over…Again, real simple.

Already lost power-
Phone works great. The base receives power from the charged unit and powers the reception to the other handsets as well. The older panasonic models do not have this feature…

Ringtones-
All the tones and melodies are terrible, but when your cell rings, it can mimic the ringtone which is good. I’m just surprised the technology of ringtones hasn’t hit the home phone yet???

Headset-
The fiancee uses a headset, and the manual headset does work with this model. The box claims bt headsets work as well (havent tried it).

Multiple lines-
I can make a call using my cellphone line, and make a call using the landline as well at the same time. So you won’t be disrupted if someone clicks in.

The speaker quality and phone reception were fine, in my wi-fi/wireless surround sound/million wireless devices condo.

My review above is geared to what I was interested in this phone. If I missed anything..or you have a question, I would be more than happy to test and find the answer for you.

I am happy with this purchase, and will update this review with features/cool things as I encounter them:) “

I have no idea what I want to write about right now or why you guys are even reading this. Thanks for reading this though, I appreciate it! I guess I can write out a bunch of things that are going on, that usually sparks something in my brain. Or not. Who the fuck knows, amirite?

Well shit is hitting the fan at work right now AND GUESS WHAT GUYS?!?! The receptionist got fired. I know what you’re thinking right now, you’re like so freaked out right now you’re like running for the door it’s okay!! <- if you can name that movie, stop reading this right now and go get yourself a cake pop, you deserve it. But really, the receptionist got fired. I have a couple theories about this: 1. God is just smiting her for being a terrible person to so many people. 2. She was bitch to the wronggggg person. 3. The new company just gives zero fucks. 4. She was making way too much money for a receptionist because she had been there since the dawn of time- I’m sure she was making a hefty sum of money (for a receptionist). Now, do not get me wrong, I’m not THAT MUCH of bitch to be happy about her losing her job. I would never wish that on someone, losing your income is terrible burden. But I’m just saying that when she left, I didn’t say “I’ll miss you.”

So I’ve started this new thing- when I think people are using their phones too much, I stare at them. It usually comes into play in the elevator (which I rarely take because I don’t want to be lazy) but the times I do take the elevator, everyone’s go-to move is to check their phones. Well my go-to counter move for that is to stare at them. So far I’ve found that people don’t even notice my ridiculous social behaviour (with a ‘u’, because I’m trying to be British) because they’re too busy sucking Facebook’s dick. You know what’s more fun than staring at your phone in the elevator? Talking to the people in the elevator. I tell really good elevator jokes. I almost always have something witty to say about the weather. Who knows? You could love my elevator banter BUT YOU’LL NEVER KNOW BECAUSE YOU’RE MORE INTERESTED IN WHAT THE LOSERS ON FACEBOOK ARE DOING! And that’s your loss, elevator losers.

I’ve been thinking this for quite some time but now I’m ready to write about it. We’re on our phones too much. And I’m saying we because I’m finding myself doing it too and I secretly shout FUCK NICOLE STOP IT. We aren’t interacting anymore. I went to brunch the other day and it was a group of three (myself included) and two of the three were on their phones 90% of time. And the other 10% was spent eating. I could not tell you one interesting thing we talked about during that brunch because there was no talking. I did my goddamn best to not get on my phone. So I watched the TV above the bar and laughed at the baby at the other table. I wasn’t interacting with anyone (maybe the baby a little because she was pumped to be there) but I was at least trying to leave room for interaction to grow. I did listen to the table behind us have a thrilling conversation about how mom can’t ride a bike properly. Almost turned around and added an anecdote about that time Mom almost fell off her bike in Charleston. Then I remembered, they’re not my family. I am not in their conversation. But my table? Instagram happened. Facebook happened. But conversation? Nah fuck that shit.

I mentioned my distaste for this cell phone obsessed culture to a guy friend of mine, who also happens to suck ass so I shouldn’t even give his response any thought but I do…He said I should “embrace technology” as if my desire for interaction was a rejection of technological advances. I embrace technology. I’m fucking typing this on my laptop. I don’t embrace the idea that we should spend more time instagramming our adventures than enjoying them. I don’t think you need to check twitter every 3 minutes. Wanna hear a random thought? JUST LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU. No need to read 140 characters about your friends who like so wish it was sunny out because they need a tan, hashtag paleisGROSS. When you’re stuck on your phone, you’re stuck in everyone else’s world and you’re not living in your own. You’re too consumed comparing your Sunday brunch instagram to Becky’s, and why did Becky’s picture get 15 more likes than mine? My filter was fucking better. Becky is a bitch.

Embrace what technology can do for you- I can share my experiences with all my friends who would normally miss out. I can see what Taylor is doing in Texas and I love it. I can get really fucking mad at Kim when she instagrams my dog. I can fall in love with Attie over facebook. But that’s not all we should be doing- share your life but don’t forget to put your phone down and continue living it. You don’t know what you’re missing when you’re stuck staring at that screen. I mean, you’re missing my witty elevator banter that’s for goddamn sure, but you could be missing out on so much more, including but not limited to: new friends, that car about to hit you walking in the parking lot, the opinions and thoughts of your already friends, people watching, checking out the sexy guy with all the tattoos over there, the concert you’re attending, the menu you’re not looking at…um…the whole world really. So get off your fucking phone guys and live, damn.

On a completely irrelevant note, I wrote this entire blog sitting on my floor playing Run DMC on my computer. I bet the people below me HATE me. But whatever, at least they got to hear good music. I think a “you’re welcome” is in order.

It started in the 1950′s with learning to use the sewing machine and graduated to the computer in 2000. Humm, that’s a span of 50 years. In between there was the comptometer (a type of adding machine), manual typewriter, old copy machines that required to manually turn the crank. Remember those old DOS computers? Electronic calculator > They’ve gone digital!

Then there were software programs. Software programs that could do all sorts of things like:

Adding

Subtracting

Highlighting

Calculating

Spell checking

Inserting

Word processing

Graphs

Charts

Complex calculations

Translation

Communication: type a letter, send an email, leave a voice message, play telephone tag, have a meeting by Skype, or just meet face to face. Postmen are only used to deliver junk mail now.

Phones too have undergone a transformation. They now fit in your pocket. The office can contact you anywhere they want. You’re scared to take a bio in case the phone rings while you’re in there. The new multi-line phone system (I think these really are going to be obsolete) that has all the lines flashing at once. Voice Mail is a wonderful invention and Email is even better. Automated answering systems seem to be the norm for large companies. What a waste of time they are. Mind you they have managed to sort some of them out. Nothing worse than being in an automated message loop that goes no where.

What’s really, really scary, you can now see the other person you are talking to. Talk about the future slapping you in the face. This was only a cartoon when I was a kid. If we can imagine it, we can create it.

HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Angry Bird

Recently I had a bit of a meltdown. You know that all-consuming rage that takes over your body and turns you into a crazy person? I had that. In fact I have never been so angry, probably. What drove me to this place of mad frustration, you ask? I’ll tell you. It was my phone. I was walking my dog by the river and doing some online banking. Then in the middle of a really important transfer, my phone unexpectedly and inexplicably shut down, and wouldn’t come back on again. After a few minutes of boiling rage, and threatening out loud to anyone who cared (which was no-one) that I was going to throw my phone in the river, I calmed down. And then I realised: I was walking my dog by the river and doing some online banking. When did I get so spoiled?

Not so long ago, banking was the sort of thing you could only do – well, in a bank. And phones were the sort of things you could only use as – well, phones. Now I expect to be able to perform all sorts of banking tasks, at any time I choose, wherever I happen to be. Let’s face it, I don’t expect my phone to do just that. I expect it to be able to work out how many calories I had for lunch, download any song I decide to listen to, play Scrabble with my sister 5000 miles away, tell me when my friends have a birthday, and direct me to any address in the world.

Speaking of directing me to an address, another recent meltdown was caused when I was driving alone and the Maps app stopped working in the middle of a very stressful episode of Lost in Maple Ridge. I actually started thumping my phone at one point. (It didn’t help at all, and now my phone is broken.) I remember the old days, when all we had to get us around was a hand-held GPS. And, if you’re really old like me, you may even remember actual paper maps. They were a lot of fun. Even more fun was when we had to work out an address and how to get there, using – get this! – our brains! I know, it all seems so last century. But that was then, and this is now. Now we rely on satellites and … well, other technological things that I don`t understand. I am getting bored waiting for the time when we can just say an address into our phone, phone will communicate with car, and the car will just take us there. It doesn`t seem that much to ask.

I am ashamed to say that I do have phone attachment issues. It’s a real condition apparently, where if you suddenly find yourself without your phone, you start to get the shakes, jitters, pains in the chest, and feelings of inadequacy. That is a real condition, right?

She walked through the door, pulling it shut behind her, and dropped her bags with a resounding thud. She looked at the message she had typed on her phone and reread it for the millionth time: “You and I. Coffee. 8:00PM.” It was choppy and brief, but no emotion could be inferred. He would have no idea what she had to say when they met up, if they met up. She would feel neither guilt nor sadness with a message like that. Maybe she just wouldn’t feel at all. She took a deep breath and hit send.

Her dog greeted her with such enthusiasm that she almost smiled. But the loud barks echoed through her empty apartment. Without moving the two feet she had planted firmly on the doormat, she slowly looked around. Things. Just a lot of things. A lot of his things. A stack of records on the floor, the topmost not belonging in her home anymore. And photos; framed, taped, hung, photos everywhere. It wasn’t seeing his face in those photos that really moved her, forcing her to enter further into the apartment. It was the knowledge that no matter how long she left them there, those photos, that stack of books that didn’t belong on her shelf, the records, the sweater she did not own but slept in far too often; all these things would not move themselves. They would not exit through her door of their own accord. Instead, she would have to take the time to dismantle the past year and remove it. Like it didn’t happen. And act as if it did not change her, as if she wouldn’t be sitting on the floor shivering and trying not to cry but failing miserably. Because she would be, and it did.

She placed her phone on the kitchen counter and turned the volume up. The sound would paralyze her when it rang out, but she hated staring at it, waiting for the flash. To busy herself, she made coffee and took a clean coffee mug out of the cupboard. She opened the fridge, wondering what else she could make to keep her mind preoccupied. But the thought of eating only brought a sick feeling to her stomach. Instead she took a cup out and filled it with water and began watering her orchids. The silence was choking her. Even with the radio on, the air felt dead. Like someone was sucking the oxygen out of the room and all that was left was an unbearable pressure in her lungs. She put the cup down and opened a window, but car horns and sirens were of no help. The sounds of the city only reminded her of how utterly alone she was. She walked into her office and found a small box with some scrap paper in it. Once the scrap paper was thrown in the recycling, she placed the box on the kitchen counter. There it sat, taunting her. Daring her to fill it. But she couldn’t. Not just yet.

She checked her phone, just in case it didn’t ring, but no message had been received. Sighing, she placed the phone back on the counter and walked into the living room. She picked the stack of books up off the coffee table and walked back into the kitchen. One by one she placed the books in the box, gently laying them as if they would break if handled without care. When she was done she turned back to the counter and checked her phone once more; no new messages.

                                                 ~

There was nothing like the disembodied feeling of holding in his hands all that is left of something that was rooted so deeply within him. To make someone a part of himself, letting them into his home, into his heart, into his head. To consciously make space for them, physically, mentally, and emotionally. It’s nothing but empty space when they’re gone. And everything that was once metaphysical is now tangible; the bottom drawer full of her socks or the hair pins that somehow found their way onto his floor. It seemed as though every single second spent with each other was coming down to the box he now filled with her things. Normally he would ask himself if this was really how it ended. A cold, awkward exchange of miscellaneous items and a final look. But, he knew her far too well. He knew her as well as he knew himself. Because this time she wasn’t a surrogate; she had become a part of him, they had mixed together into something utterly new to him. Through this, he knew that it would not end quickly. Not for her. She would keep hidden her true feelings, and reflect. She was always reflecting. Whatever emotions he displayed, she would mimic them exactly. That, he believed, was her fatal flaw. The blame was on them both, but her inability to show her true emotions was her contribution to their demise.

With that final thought, he taped the box closed and placed it beside the door. As he walked back into his bedroom he noticed the earrings on his nightstand. He would have to hand them to her, when he gave her the box. As he grabbed the earrings, he turned to the doorway and noticed his phone was lying on his bed with the screen lit up. He felt adrenaline course through his veins, and his brain fuzzed a little. He picked his phone up and turned it over face down on the comforter. Taking a deep breath, he sat down and stared at it. He could look at it. And it could be her. She could be sad, or angry, or both. She could be reaching out, or pushing him away. But it would be her just the same. However, it could also not be her. It could be his friend wanting to hangout, or his mother asking him when he was coming over for dinner next week. Comparing the two, he knew what was worse. Her cold shoulder could freeze the breath inside his body until he could not move, could not think. She could paralyze him.

He couldn’t let that happen. How could she have so much power over him when she wasn’t even there? He picked his phone up, playing with it as he mulled over the predicament she had placed him in. A sudden burst of anger sent his phone flying across the room, until it met the wall and shattered into pieces.

What if……

Today I had a day of “what ifs” I’m sure I make these types of decisions everyday, I just choose not to pay any attention them.. But today I have had a series of events and made a number of decision that have made me question, “what if I didn’t do that?”
So lets start from the very start.
Decision 1 – Getting out of bed. Nat was up and showered at normal time, but I couldn’t get out of bed, I made the decision to saying in bed for an extra 15mins. Forcing the decision of driving to work instead of catching the tram. (although I think nat had already planned in her head that she was driving). So in the car we go. This particular decision did enable a stop at our favourite coffee shop ever https://plus.google.com/104788209692048255288/about?gl=au&hl=en#104788209692048255288/about?gl=au&hl=en
Decision 2 – Checking Facebook. Now let’s be honest checking Facebook is 100% a decision, but many would argue that is it an addiction and that one must check Facebook on numerous occasions every hour. Now I’m not afraid to admit my Facebook checking can be somewhat excessive, but no more than the normal. In this case this morning, the second I sat my bum down in the car I hit that little Facebook Icon and scrolling I went. Now I know most people are reading this going wow, that’s late, I check my Facebook while still lying in bed in the morning. Now don’t worry about this, I have seen figures along the lines of 95% of people aged 15 – 40 check their Facebook before getting out of bed in the morning, so you’re not alone. (don’t quote me on that). So I was just running late. Anyway, after my Facebook provided me with limited updates since I last checked it at 11pm the night before, this scrolling didn’t take long. 1.5kms down the road I open my phone case and check it again while we were sitting at the traffic lights about to enter onto the freeway. Now I don’t have THAT many Facebook friends so how much more information could have arrived on my news feed in barely 2 mins since last checking it.????? Well…… timing is everything and friend post about a massive accident on the freeway we were about to enter… which leads to:
Decision 3 – Not entering the freeway. – As I relayed this information to Nat the lights turned green and it needed a quick decision to go straight and not turn. For me this was a decision less drive in for me.
Decision 4 – Crossing the road – standing at the intersection of Franklin and Swanston street (for those people who want a visual and know Melbourne). I see a tram at the stop and think to myself If I make that tram, I will get into work extra early, then could squeeze in a trip to the gym at lunch and I would save me walking in this freezing weather. Then as I’m about to cross the road the little man stops flashing red and becomes a solid red light. I take a quick look to my left and think Ill just J walk, when the car turning right is a bloody cop car. So instead of running through the light and risking a fine, or worse getting hit, I put on the brakes and miss my tram.
Decision 5- Walking to work or waiting for the next tram. – I make the decision to walk after a few minutes of waiting for the tram… Now when walking down Swanston street, the pedestrian lights are just like the traffic lights if you get one green light you get green lights all the way down. And of course I just missed the lights (again, mind you) and there I have to wait for the green man. Now we revert back to a similar decision already made…..
Decision 6 – Checking Facebook – because that’s what people do these days when they are waiting… they get on their phones. So check I do, Facebook of course… again not much news, flip my phone case shut and whoops phone slips from my hand and Bang… Busted phone that doesn’t work, dead, done and dusted.
So riddle me this, please tell me which you think statement is correct.
1.	If I was out of bed on time and caught the tram, all my decisions would have been different and I would never have broken my phone.
2.	I was always going to break my phone.
3.	I shouldn’t check Facebook so much.

John Gruber argues that Google’s swan song of innovation has no basis in reality; the company thrives off of copycat services. I agree completely; but I also have a couple of points to add to his argument.

Google’s fortune stems not from doing something better, or even simply competing. Google’s fortune comes from their ability to create products that mine data in ways that only Facebook would approve of (which makes Facebook Home and Android great bedfellows).

Google’s actual innovations are creepy. Aka, Glass.

So, there’s this rap song — you’ve probably heard it, it came out over 10 years ag

So, there’s this rap song — you’ve probably heard it, it came out over 10 years ago. Forgot About Dre by Dr. Dre, featuring Eminem. Dr. Dre was, without a doubt, one of the founding fathers of “gangsta rap,” and, while I’m not a big fan of the rap genre, I did enjoy his 1992 album “The Chronic” and his protege Snoop Doggy Dogg’s (later Snoop Dogg, currently Snoop Lion) “Doggystyle.” I was a teenager and my mother was a rocker, so my rebellious act wasn’t listening to heavy metal (my mother did, after all, like some Metallica), it was listening to rap. Not much, just the popular stuff, and just for a year or so. If that. Anyway, after Dre and Snoop, the rap world made way for Tupac and Biggie (RIP and RIP), and in 1999, Dre came out with another album, “2001,” and on the song Forgot About Dre, and the chorus, rapped (rhymed? sang?) entirely by Eminem, goes, “Nowadays everybody wanna talk like they got something to say/But nothing comes out when they move their lips/Just a bunch of gibberish/And mother ____ers act like they forgot about Dre.” And — and I know this is kinda strange — but it gets me thinking — people act like they forgot about Google. I’ll tell you why…

Search. First and foremost. Google’s first order of business is the search engine. Remember search before Google? Yahoo was king, and there were a bunch of smaller ones like AltaVista, Lycos, HotBot, etc. Now we have Google and everything else is just “the other stuff.” Microsoft has a good product with Bing, and I give Bing a lot more credit than most do, but there are still a couple things it can’t do that Google can.

Email. This is a big one! Before Gmail was a thing, most people just had email through their Internet Service Provider. “Webmail” was not something everybody did. Yeah, there were Yahoo and Hotmail (Microsoft — now Outlook.com — and yes I know before Microsoft bought them they were HotMaiL — I had an account there before Microsoft came along) but people weren’t all that crazy about them. You’d hit your limit before too long and you’d have to delete a bunch of stuff. Google came along and said, here, have 1GB. One gigabyte. Because we don’t care. That’s virtually unlimited emails and a crapload of pictures. Now it’s 10GB. And even though some people offer more (I do believe Microsoft offers unlimited?), Gmail is still the king of web-based email. Some people swear by Yahoo, including my wife. I have a Yahoo email account as well. (I like the new Yahoo Mail. My wife hates it.) In fact, I run the “penguinfinity” identity out of Yahoo. penguinfinity at yahoo dot com. Drop me a line. Gmail is where I use my “real name” though. Because it’s the best. (Both the Gmail and Yahoo go straight to my phone, though, so it isn’t like I neglect one.)

Video. There’s YouTube and there’s what? Well there used to be Google Video. There’s Netflix but you have to pay. There’s Hulu but it only has so much. There’s also a whole bunch of funny sites like College Humor, but they use YouTube for their best stuff anyway. Google is pretty much peerless here.

Cloud storage and Office stuff. Actually, Google is not the best here. Microsoft is. Microsoft will give you 7GB and you can use web versions of Word and Excel right in your browser. It’s very nice. Google gives you 5GB for Drive (although, this was recently bumped to 15GB, but it’s the same 15GB you had before — the 10GB from Gmail and the 5GB from Drive — now it’s just under one roof) and their Word and Excel clones are very basic. But I can use Google Drive on my phone, and my wife can’t use Microsoft SkyDrive on her Xbox. With Xbox Live Gold you have 512MB (just 0.5GB) for save games. No way to use SkyDrive (where I have 25GB, which used to be the free account limit, and still is if you got it then) and I think she does as well, I believe she got in before they lowered it. Why can’t we have SkyDrive cloud storage on the Xbox? No real good reason. Maybe the next one will correct this oversight. Probably not, though. We’ll see next week when they reveal the next Xbox. But still, Google has a decent offering and it’s free.

Smartphones. Oh boy, this is the big one. Apple came out with a touch-screen feature phone in 2007. A year later, Google bought a small project that was making pocket computers that could double as a phone (essentially small versions of the Ultra Mobile PC) and brought their Linux distribution — you may have heard of it — called Android — to the market. So here comes Apple with this phone that, the whole face is a touch screen (well, except the top and bottom), and a year later, here comes Google with a pocket PC that has a phone app. Apple’s been on corporate welfare ever since, suing anybody who makes what we now call smartphones, and trying to convince people they consider stupid that they don’t need a smartphone, and trying to convince people they consider smart that their phone does most of the things a smartphone can do and is thus worth the price tag (although, when Steve Jobs (RIP) first announced it, he said it would actually run OS X, a feature we have yet to see, and I would love to see on an iPad). Microsoft has smartphones, but they suck. And BlackBerry pretty much got thrown under the bus by this whole rat race, and has yet to recover. Now they’re pulling a Sega and offering their once-killer IM service, BBM (BlackBerry Messaging) on Android and iPhone. In other words they’re pretty much done.

And last but not least, social networking. Google didn’t have the second major social network or even the third. In fact, Google is on their third social network. Orkut was an utter failure, and Buzz blew up in their faces when they tried to force it on every Gmail user. There was also Wave, but that never got out of beta (and sucked, besides). No, I’m talking about Google+, which is kind of like a cross between Facebook and Twitter. Mostly it’s a better Facebook, but like Twitter, you follow people, and can do so without their confirmation. However, while Facebook became the de facto standard after MySpace pissed everyone off “for the last time,” while people seem to be generally dissatisfied with Facebook, very few are actually leaving it for greener pastures, which Google is certainly offering. Too often I hear, “But none of my friends use it.” Haha. I used Facebook when only my wife and one other person I knew used it. Pretty much right when they started letting people in, actually. (Facebook used to be a private social network, limited only to students with a valid .edu email address.) And most of my friends and family were still on MySpace. But I stuck with it, and gradually people started switching over. I’d pop back over to MySpace every now and then, but as more and more people switched (and fully switched, without going back), using MySpace became less and less relevant. I know of no good reason why Facebook hasn’t been similarly abandoned, and can only speculate that people just like to whine and aren’t particularly concerned with Facebook’s more troubling changes (or how little they care what people think of them). Especially when everyone turned on MySpace right around the time News Corp (e.g. Fox) bought them, and Facebook similarly sold out by going public. They’ve been publicly traded for about a year now, which means they put shareholders above users (because they have to). To be fair, Google is publicly traded as well, so the same caveat applies, but the grass is still greener. That, or perhaps the metaphor extends to the ones looking. That is to say, one who grazes in one field and has moved to another field for greener grass (e.g. sheep, cows, horses, other grazing animals) might not do so again so quickly. And I really hate to call anyone a sheep because of their choice in technology, but if the shoe fits… I am sorry, a geek uses what is best without attachment to what was once best, and I understand not everyone is like that. But, there it is.

About 16 of them.

A bunch of antennas send camera signals to the main office, which has a DVR going 24/7.

Makes a person feel all safe and warm, right.

W-e-e-e-l-l-l. . . . .

The property is also getting a new Internet system. Add two more antennas, beaming out 1200 feet each – plenty of strength for our small number of apartments. And then some.

Cell phone towers beam rays 24/7 even if you don’t have your phone turned on, or even if you don’t own a cell phone.

Add TV signals (yup, we still have TV signals beamed through the airwaves), radio signals, GPS signals, and a bunch of other stuff, and suddenly, I wonder if we aren’t being slowly cooked.

Like food in a microwave oven.

I asked some “techies” about this, and they agree, it can’t all be healthy. BUT, it is a fact of life so, “whatcha gonna do?”

Excuse me whilst I baste my other side and turn myself over.

As a metaphor for big government, it is hard to top the Justice Department’s seizing of journalists’

As a metaphor for big government, it is hard to top the Justice Department’s seizing of journalists’ phone records from The Associated Press.

Unless, of course, you think the best example is the Internal Revenue Service turning the screws on groups it viewed as conservative and, therefore, unworthy of fair treatment.

Or maybe the winner is the sneaky spreading of ObamaCare’s tentacles, with insurance companies now predicting the law will drive up the cost of individual premiums by as much as 400 percent.

There are no losers in this race to the bottom — except the American people. It is tempting to ask whether they’ve had enough Hope & Change, but the question is premature. With 44 months to go in the reign of the Great Mistake, the gods are not done punishing us.

Meanwhile, back at the White House, the growing cloud of trouble must have the bunker boys longing for the good old days. You know, those idyllic days of yesteryear, a k a early last week, when Benghazi was the only scandal on the horizon.

Everything was much simpler then. All the president had to do was cry “Politics!” and the Pavlovian media mutts declared Benghazi a “partisan witch hunt” and started digging into really important things, such as whether Republicans are evil or just stupid.

Then the dam broke. First, it was the sensational Benghazi hearing, where previously muzzled whistleblowers detailed the administration’s bungles before, during and after the terror attack. Throw in reports showing the infamous Susan Rice talking points were rewritten 11 times, going from fact to fiction, and Benghazi suddenly became the important story it should have been all along.

If that were all, it would have been enough. But the near-simultaneous revelations in recent days about the IRS playing political favorites, the massive phone grab at the AP news operation, and ObamaCare’s cost impact combined to demonstrate something I believed for a long time.

The Obama administration is both corrupt and incompetent. It is a double whammy that spells trouble for the nation, at home and abroad.

The corruption is not like that in Albany, where officials stuff their pockets with taxpayer cash. The corruption in Obama-Land is the selective use of government power to reward friends and punish opponents. Or, as the president calls them, enemies.

Political allies — think Solyndra and unions — get special goodies, while those who oppose the regime’s agenda are demonized and singled out for scrutiny. The IRS targeting of groups with “Tea Party” or “patriot” in their names and those that advocate less spending smacks of the tactics of banana republic strongmen. Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro would be proud.

But America is a nation of laws and not of men, of individual liberty and not of centralized power. And that national dynamic explains the firestorm of anger aimed at the White House. The headlines have sparked a wide and genuine outcry over Obama’s push against the nation’s roots.

He’s been doing it for four years, and mostly getting away with it, but suddenly, there is a critical mass of evidence against him. Maybe the AP case made the media realize they were not exempt from Obama’s overreach.

Whatever the reason, what we see so far is certainly not the end of it. You can bet other nasty, intrusive surprises are hiding in the vast deep of the expanding bureaucracy.

The ultimate danger is a lack of accountability. The idea that ordinary citizens hold the power has no meaning when the political class circles the wagons and the press looks the other way while the president accumulates more power and control.

That is where we have been, but hopefully, not where we are going. Their liberty DNA kicking in, more and more citizens, including some in the media, finally are expressing shock and anger at how big, clumsy and crooked our government is. They are welcome to the discovery, belated though it is.

For those of us not shocked by the inevitable, there is vindication but no satisfaction. Each example of Obama’s chickens coming home to roost just makes more obvious how much damage he’s already done.

The repair begins by throwing open the doors and windows of Washington. We’ll need a lot of sunshine to disinfect this rot
