I had been playing with my 60D on Friday while waiting for my students to arrive after spending the morning shooting. I knew I could process Raw files in my camera but never spent the 5 ins to experiment. With time to spare I took a quick look.

I was presently surprised by the outcome. It is fairly easy to make adjustments to white balance, exposure, saturation and even noise reduction. You can also create presets that you can quickly apply , but not by batch, to other images to the tone of the image (amount of saturation, contrast brightness ect).

The conversion is quite nice and I believe better than what the camera could do, if it was processing it as a Jpeg.

I took the same file and made basic adjustments in Adobe Camera Raw (no localized adjustments or gradient adjustments). It is quite obvious that the ACR edit is much stronger. I was able to make the image more balanced and less blue, with being able to control highlight and shadow detail I can shift the light to certain areas of the image.

It was going to be no contest between the two. Editing on a camera is not the perfect solution with its small screen that is not really calibrated unlike my monitor which is bigger and calibrated. Though in saying that it was good to be able to edit a Raw file in camera. You can really preview the potential of a shot quite quickly before you get to the computer. Once you are at your desk you can jump to the images you want to edit and know roughly what will be right settings before you make refined adjustments.
Also if someone whats images quickly to preview, you can take 10 mins and edit together some raw files and then download them to their computer or tablet for them to have and then send images that have been properly edited later.

In the end I took my fish eating snake and finished editing the shot in Photoshop.

Cropping a little bit closer and balancing the image I was able to then tone the image and sharpen it. I sharpened twice, once generally and a second time to really bring out the details in the head of the snake.

Adobe’s Lightroom Develop Presets provides a variety of presets submitted by users. There are free presets, and presets available for purchase. Sometimes photo samples are included in the preset description, and the comments tend to reveal who the preset is geared towards and most useful for (amateur, macro, landscapes, etc).

Seim Effects Lightroom Presets also provides a number of free presets and presets for purchase. Many of the presets are accompanied by a video sampling how to apply and adjust the presets.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Killer Tips is another good source of presets. The site is run by Matt Kloskowski, and for each preset he provides a thorough description usually outlining when and for what photos the preset is most appropriate. Each preset comes with three options for the intensity that the preset is applied to the image with – light, medium, strong.

And last but not least, onOne Software‘s lightroom presets. The onOne Signature Collection Presets is a massive collection. I only added the presets that I thought would be most useful to Lightroom to keep from cluttering the sidebar.

Adobe’s announced this week that from now on, we’ll be forced to join the Creative Cloud if we want to keep using their software..

Which means if you are using older versions of Adobe software no up-grades will be available. I believe it will apply across the board for all products as they roll out
and start to enforce this new policy. Photo Shop 7 is the last version you can purchase. I’m still using CS5,  and it currently satisfies my technical requirements needed. However, that could change due to the new HDR software advances that interest me.

The new policy has a monthly service fee like a utility bill.  The service could be considered a utility needed for business,  which would be 100% tax-deductible. But, so is other software relating to businesses.

____”Adobe’s move to the Creative Cloud isn’t sitting well with all of its customers. Over 5,000 of them have now signed a Change.org petition calling on the company to keep selling packaged software. The blowback started on Monday when Adobe said that it will no longer sell new versions of its Creative Suite products — including Photoshop, Illustrator and other iconic applications — for a one-time fee. Instead, customers will need to buy an ongoing subscription to the Creative Cloud service in order to get future versions of the products.

 ”Creative Cloud isn’t really a cloud — it’s marketing term describing something that the software companies love: subscription based software.

Although pundits see it as a necessary move, many customers are worried that the change will end up costing them more money and give them less control over their applications. “In the short-term, the subscription model looks to be okay, but over time the only entity that is benefiting from this is Adobe,” says petition, written by Derek Schoffstall of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. “The (no longer) current model: paying a one time fee for infinite access is a much better business model and is better for the consumer.

In my opinion, with the subscription costing as much as $600 per year for Adobe Cloud, I believe you may see heavy competition develop in the photo editing software arena in the near future.

My feelings remain mixed considering we (photographers)  will always have the most upgraded versions of their photo and publishing apps. However, yet another necessary evil is needed to conduct business which will take away from our bottom lines. I suppose it could be construed also as paying the price of doing business in the new technical computer age. Don’t be surprised to see other software makers following Adobe’s lead.

Instead of dealing with pixels as you’d expect, all in order to represent the scene you have just photographed, Pixel is Data uses the image data and shows it using various parameter to reorder the pixels. They can be arranged either the “right” way – their photographic order, or using the RGB components of each pixel to determine priority.

Also included is a pixels’ positions mess slider, a pixels density slider, as in the amount of pixels from the original photo used to render an image (beware of the bigger values, they take a while…), a choice of pixel patterns (that’s the shape of each pixel, from “little squares” to “messy web of lines”) and a noise slider that disturbs the pixel size (adds randomness to the size of pixels).

I have done no editing on my iPad 2 (best. Christmas present. ever!!!) outside of what’s already in the Photos app, but I’m having no problems with InstaEditor that practise won’t help with.

As photographers this natural phenomenon becomes more apparent when we deal with the limitations of our cameras to capture and sort out the variety of lighting conditions that occur constantly. Our cameras cannot deal with nature’s lighting changes subjectively, and intuitively like our minds can. This is because camera image processors are machines, and they can only record light objectively. And the white balance controls in both our cameras and our editing software are built purely upon broad assumptions. Therein lies the problem. We assume that our cameras can see light the same intuitive fashion that our eyes do. But that’s a bad assumption.

Your eyes adapt to color temperature changes constantly. To prove this just put on sunglasses that have a slight color tint. While this tint is noticeable for a moment, in just a few seconds the color processor in your visual cortex will recalibrate the scene and completely eliminate the color cast. Any object that your mind recognizes as typically white will appear white even if the color of the light reflecting from it has a color cast.

This is because your eyes and your brain enjoy what we call Memory Colors. Memory Colors are colors that you have seen so often that they are registered in your brain in some form of human reference system. Even if the lighting on an object is less than optimal, your memory colors automatically remove the color cast in your mind.

When the camera sees a color cast it records that color cast quite objectively. Golden hour photographs exhibit a warm cast and as long as our camera’s white balance is set to Daylight, that warm color cast will seem natural. But at the same time, Daylight WB photographs shot in overcast situations will exhibit a slight blue cast that will appear cool and unnatural. To record colors that appear natural, we must set the camera’s WB to Cloudy, which tunes out the bluish cast. If images are captured in the shadow under overcast lighting, the appearance will be even more blue unless we set the WB to Shade. Now that ain’t natural!

No more boxed versions of Photoshop. Following the lead of other big players like Microsoft, future Photoshop will be a cloud-based application available by subscription. The change does not apply to Photoshop Elements nor Lightroom. But many photographers using CS6 are extremely upset.

These negative responses are mostly emotional. However, Adobe’s justification is rational — this change must be made to accommodate the move to mobile computing. There’s an excellent discussion of the issues involved on The Grid.

While the move to CC may be logical for the professional photographer who can pass along monthly software subscription charges through customer billing, it’s not common sense for the enthusiast amateur.

Most of us are shooting in raw, and if we’re not already using Lightroom, we soon will be. With Lightroom we can develop, organize, publish and non-destructively edit our photos. The beta of Lightroom 5 adds heal and clone capabilities to the non-destructive list. The major plugins we use now come in Lightroom versions or with apps that allow them to be used in Lightroom.

We do need an external editor for those occasions when corrections using layers are needed. But it’s not worth spending 50 US dollars or 20 US dollars per month for the full Photoshop package or simple Photoshop.

Our two best alternatives available as 64-bit applications for either the Windows or Mac platforms are PhotoLine 17.5, sold for $77 US dollars or Photoshop Elements 11 currently available from Amazon for 60 US dollars.

PhotoLine’s significant advantage over Elements is the ability to record, not just run, actions and it works in 16-bit, not just 8-bit. Both of these applications will be adding users from the former Photoshop users rank.

The Adobe Lightroom YouTube Channel has been the most useful resource for me. It’s easy to search for videos addressing certain topics, and the collection of tutorials is extensive.

Julieanne Kost’s blog provides a lot of information and tutorials for using Adobe Lightroom. Her videos and tutorials are also available on Adobe TV.

While it is long, I found the following YouTube video by Terri White to be the most helpful and straightforward to getting started with Lightroom. I watched it in one window while following his directions with Lightroom in another window. Some of the topics he covered were not relevant to me, so I just skipped them. Generally though it was a thorough walk through for Lightroom.

I will say, there is quite a learning curve to really be able to take advantage of Lightroom. Basic photo editing features are quite intuitive, but things like presets (at least for me) take a bit more time. I am a big fan of the options for easily importing, naming and organizing photos.

I know I intended this photo blog to be all about Puerto Princesa City and Palawan, but this Palaweña had the opportunity to join a workshop by Maricris Fabi Carlos in Las Piñas, Manila lately, and she also wishes to share what she learned in photography and digital arts manipulation.

The photo you’re currently seeing is my shot of our model Akiko Prias, and two other little girls whose names I missed — sorry about that! If you think this is painting, well… I guess it looks like one. But this used the photo editing technique called “Amorsoloesque” (read: Amorsolesk) that Maricris is known for as a photographer in the Philippines.

The editing style/technique was named after one of the most important artists in the history of painting in the Philippines, Fernando Cueto Amorsolo.

Amorsolo was “a portraitist and painter of rural Philippine landscapes. He is popularly known for his craftsmanship and mastery in the use of light. Born in Paco, Manila, he earned a degree from the Liceo de Manila Art School in 1909.

Google him out to find out how his paintings/portraits look like, and you’ll find out Maricris’ works are closest to the real thing.

I’m glad I joined her workshop, and learned that there’s more in my love for photography than meets the eye.

This weeks edit comes from an image I shot at the weekend. My wife and I headed to a local park that neither of us had visited before. Personally I was attracted to this place because there is a labyrinth in the middle, though it wasn’t much of a labyrinth.
On out walk around the park there were several squirrels running around. They were  quite easy to photograph as they seems to be used to people walking around but they wouldn’t come near you. This was the time to use a longer lens to get up close and personal.

For this weeks  image I was under a canopy of trees, and I was thinking more about capturing the shot than my exposure settings as “Secret Squirrel” was not a mission not to stay still. This had left me with quite a dark image. Normally I would shake my head and not pay to much attention to these images when they are downloaded. This time because I knew the image was going to be great.

What i needed to do was expand the shadow detail into the midtones to bring out the information in the trees and squirrel without shifting the highlights too much. The image still looks quite dark, this is because I am not going to try and bring everything to the midtones, I am attempting to keep the feel of being under the canopy. I will bring the Squirrel out more later.

Next I expanded the contrast in the midtones by using clarify. I did this to create details in the midtones by forcing the contrast there. I also made adjustments to the saturation and Vibrance to boost the colours in the image. One of the side effects of this is that the breast of the squirrel is now slightly yellow. This I will need to fix this.

Made some quick adjustments for noise reduction and capture sharpening  The image was shot at 800 ISO so there was a nice bit of noise but nothing too bad. I also used lens correction to reduce the distortion caused by the lens.

I added a vignette to the image to darken the corners and bring the focus in on the Squirrel.
It can be said that the squirrel was already the focus of the image and that is right, though in adding the vignette it  keeps the atmosphere of the wood as well as keeping the squirrel seeming lit.

I had to make three local adjustments to the squirrel. The first was just general toning to lighten and define the subject.

The second adjustment was to the saturation of the squirrel to really bring out the red and orange in its fur.

The last adjustment was to cool down the breast of the squirrel to reduce the yellow.

In Camera Raw my last adjustments was to the contrast of the image.

In Photoshop I first toned the image with a Kodachrone 64 esq colours using Exposure 4 this give nice deep blacks and saturated colours.

My final adjustments were localized saturation adjustments to the squirrel. I reduced the saturation of the yellows and masked it in as well as slightly burning in the squirrel to make him standout some more.

My final adjustment was localized sharpening. I didn’t want to sharpen the whole image just the squirrel to keep it popping out. I did this using the High Pass Method

Final Image

I am really happy with the way the image came out. It does look like it did in the park. I am mostly happy with the pose of the squirrel and how it looks like he is tensed ready to jump.  The vignette is possibly too strong but it does work bringing in the eye to the subject of the image. The toning I feel is natural with the different hues of green in the surrounding trees as well as that right reddish brown of the tree itself.
