Finalizing everything for the trip to Lishui and the Festival. We’re flying to Shanghai first and will spend a day with friends before going on to Lishui. The committee has set up an overnight trip, actually a choice of three, to areas right around Lishui. Some interesting choices including one area that has been making Swords for centuries. I am going to try and do some blogging from Lishui but not sure about the access to the web. I hope to be able to share some images as well.

I can’t believe how close it is now. Time is flying by with so much to do but I am looking forward to meeting all of the other photographers and the curators attending the event. Saw a schedule of events and it is packed but looks great. One day we get to choose one of three day trips into the country to explore and shoot. I’m also looking forward to experiencing the Chinese culture. I have been doing a lot of reading, corresponding with ex-pats in China, talking to guides/translators and even studying Mandarin. Well, it’s not Perpignan and there’s still a lot to learn from Visa Pour l’Image, but the setting in the old Jaffa 1892 train station is fantastic and it’s a great start for what I hope will be the annual International Israeli Photo Festival - Point Of View

The two exhibitions I found most interesting were Robert Capa’s prints of the 1948 Tel-Aviv coast with Altalena smoking in the background and newly-formed IDF troops taking cover in an exchange of gunfire with Irgun fighters.

The second was Francesco Zizola’s “Born Somewhere”.

It’s great the curators were able to bring these fine exhibitions to Tel-Aviv.

But the best part of it all was closing the day walking along the coast to the Fishermen’s Restaurant in Jaffa Port with my best friend and love of my life!

(the shrimps in garlic butter and wine weren’t too bad either).

The “3. Fotofestival Mannheim – Ludwigshafen – Heidelberg” has the title: Images Recalled – Bilder auf Abruf. Artists were asked to put their focus on the topic of the credibility of images. Photos are often use to prove the truth. But aren’t they showing only a limited perspective?

Exhibition inside the Heidelberger Kunstverein

The artist Nils Klinger from Kassel is exhibiting “mug short cards”, which were used in the US to register criminals. On such a card you would see the photograph of the prisoner and there would be a note, telling the crime of each. Nils Klinger now developed the idea of picturing the crimes by himself. So he took photos himself, telling a kind of truth, or not?

Nina Fischer’s video “Toute la mémoire du monde” (All the knowledge of the world) which she shot in the empty halls of the Bibliothèque National de France in Paris. A little scary to see, how such a big library was emptied, how the people inside are waiting to learn, getting bored, and being passive.

You can see the exhibition till October, 26th.

In Heidelberg it is in the building of the “Heidelberger Kulturverein”. In Mannheim they are exhibited inside the “Kunsthalle Mannheim” and in the “Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen”.

New York Photo Festival is starting on May 13. It is the second annual festival which will take place in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Lots of exhibitions, workshops and lectures are waiting for attendance.

Yes, I did and it looked great. That was last spring. And this year a bunch of us from the PhotoHand team – those residing in New York – will see it too. We’ll be hanging out at the New York Photo Festival to see what’s new in the Art of Photography for inspiration and to pick up a few tricks that we could use for art effects in our photo design work.

If you like Photography and if you are in the NYC area, I would recommend you to see the exhibits. If you are a Photographer, I would attend the seminars too. Following up on its successful debut in May 2008, the New York Photo Festival is pleased to announce the exhibition dates for 2009 and its Festival Curators. The inaugural event in May 2008 was a surprise hit, and it delivered on the promise of presenting the “future of contemporary photography” through the efforts of world-class curators and the selected artists. The NYPH’08 Festival Curators—Kathy Ryan, Martin Parr, Lesley A. Martin, and Tim Barber—created four stunning exhibitions focusing on the ubiquity of images in digital and daily life, sculptural tendencies in contemporary photography, ground-breaking paths in formal photographic documentation and representation, and a formal yet whimsical approach to the democratic presentation of artistic representation. The New York Photo Festival’s debut run in 2008 answered critics’ lament that the world’s capital of photography could never compile a festival of its own. It also affirmatively resolved the quandary of whether contemporary photography could ever stand on its own, apart and distinct from its historical antecedents of greatest hits and exotic depiction.

Martin Jürgens, photograph conservator, Hamburg, offers a workshop on the production of calotypes (negative and positive prints of the salted paper process). 19th and 20th April 2008.

The second weekend offers portfolio viewings with experts of international photo festivals as well as art directors and art dealers. The portfolio viewing adresses both professional photographers and future talents.

Nightly “Flashlights”, workshops with photographers and photo restorers as well as round table talks with guests from museums, publishing houses, and last but not least the photographers themselves round off the program.

Here’s what caught my eye just now : Angkor Photography Festival 2007

Check it out. Although the world is a village these days, my local buss does not yet drive thru. Otherwise I would hop on and buy a ticket to destination. Seems worthwile to attend/participate.
