Watching the birds in our garden is a great way to spend time, and in particular when adult birds are feeding their young. Like this robin… darting back and forth to get food and returning to it’s impatient young.

I wanted to write this incredibly though-provoking post about Facebook and the new hash-tag function

I wanted to write this incredibly though-provoking post about Facebook and the new hash-tag function, but I haven’t made up my mind on it yet. Two days ago, if you had asked me what I thought about hash-tags on Facebook, I would have told you that they annoy the living daylights out of me, and that I thought they were an incredibly poor way of communicating. I couldn’t see the sense in putting up a picture and then writing a series of hash-tags to express what the picture is about. I also could not see the sense in writing a short status and then hash-tagging it with a dozen words to see what trends. You can probably tell already that I don’t use Twitter or Instagram…

I am, however, quickly coming to the realisation that the hash-tag is a form of communication that is sort of like standing on your soap-box in Speaker’s Corner and seeing who responds. It is a way of being social with the world, as opposed to just your circles of friends. I clicked on the hash-tag of a friend to see what would happen, and came up with a bunch of public posts by other people, posts that I can ‘like’, and comment on, and share. I feel like I am wandering the streets, looking for people to talk to. I have now engaged in a conversation with people I’ve never met about whether wearing a blue tie really is an indicator of political conservatism.

The thing is, I’ve been using tags for ages – right here on WordPress. I guess the difference is that the tags here are not a part of the main text of the posting, whereas the Facebook ones go right into the status. In a sense, they get in the way. They are clunky and difficult to shift from the message. And sometimes they are the message. I have friends who do put up pictures and then instead of telling us all in a sentence what the picture is about, they write a string of hash-tags.

I can see the benefits of this hash-tag business, but I still think they look ugly…

Last year I noticed the gull nests all the way from Children’s Pool up to just before the Cove. Many of them are near and around the little green houses. There are 2 on the seawall at Children’s Pool ! It’s amazing to see that the high tide waves haven’t taken the nests out. There is one on the huge tall rock on the east side of Children’s Pool, too. That gull is the only smart one because the public can’t get to her nest! There is another one on the ground next to the fence at Children’s Pool. Poor mom yells at everyone who walks by and the people don’t even look at her. There is also one on the bluff near the top of Shell Beach – that poor mom had people walking up to within one foot of her nest. Yesterday I noticed she only has one chick, while all the other nests have 3 chicks. I think human interference took a toll there. These recent photos are from the nests near the little green houses. I’ve probably counted at least a dozen nests there. I hope you get a chance to go see them. I will be posting photos as they grow and fledge !

I haven’t really had a chance recently to record my daily activities like I used to. And I guess that’s a good thing since it means I’ve been super busy working on some amazing projects!

Here’s what I’ve been up to for the past few weeks:

Working on my first real freelance illustration job!!! I’ve been more or less hired to design some covers and interior illustrations. More details to come.

Working on blog posts documenting my Cannes/London trip. There are about 20-23 related posts I’ve been working on since I got back. I just want to polish them all before sharing them!

Figuring out inventory for upcoming online store and expos/fests/conventions. This includes putting together my first zine and The Flea plush toy among other products.

Production of my first zine. I’ve been printing, cutting, and assembling like mad and can’t wait to share my work! Plus, I already have a great idea for my second zine.

Production of The Flea plush toy. This has involved a few failed attempts, but I’ve finally hit upon a great prototype and am ready to start making more.

Setting up a Storenvy account. Drafting product descriptions, etc.

Pre-production for The Man Who Never Smiled. One of my short scripts is being made into a film!!! I’ve been working with a Sacramento-based director named Josh on this. We’re planning on filming in July. More details to come.

Planning on finishing the first 10 pages of The First Reich. As soon as I’m done with the first deadline for the freelance illustration job, I plan to work on this.

Officially began writing my third full-length screenplay. I’ve had this strange idea floating around my brain for a while now. Without giving anything away, I think the best way to describe it is as a dark dramedy.

Planning on submitting some new short screenplays to various contests. While at Cannes, I had a chance to write a few new shorts.

To be continued…!

As I mentioned some time ago I undertook a photo shoot for the Chinese edition of National Geographic Traveler magazine at London’s Natural History Museum.

It was a fabulous couple of days being able to wander around the building, with the feature writer and museum press officer, shooting whatever attracted my eye. I was given fantastic access to some of the vaults that contained an astonishing array of unique items. Artefacts from Captain Cook’s first voyage to Australia in particular stick in my mind, which included pressed plant samples which looked as though they’d only just been pasted into the book, as well as sketches that were composed onboard the ship and unbelievably well preserved marine life from the 18th century, one of which being a giant squid that apparently when fully expanded would be the size of a double decker bus.

I’m really chuffed with the final result and have included the complete magazine feature layout below.

The GALERIE Prestige range outshines traditional photos in terms of sharpness, high colour gamut, image permanence, printer and ink compatibility, ease of handling, vivid colour reproduction as well as range and quality of finish to take inkjet photo printing to the next level. Smooth Fine Art Canvas GALERIE Prestige Smooth Fine Art Canvas is a cotton/polyester blend designed to deliver the best in professional photographic digital prints. It is a robust stretchable canvas with a high resistance to cracking and superior framing performance. It incorporates an advanced inkjet receiving layer, which provides excellent image sharpness and optimum colour gradation. Key Benefits Cotton/polyester blend, robust stretch canvas Outstanding photographic image quality and consistency, even at the fastest print speeds Excellent smudge and water resistance Making memories last a lifetimeA number of elements can affect the life of an inkjet print. In addition to the type of ink and media used, factors including light, humidity, temperature, air pollutants, ozone levels and how and where the print is displayed, can all influence the permanence of a print. ILFORD media is manufactured using raw materials of the highest quality and purity that preserve the longevity of the image without contributing to colour degradation. In addition, rigorous internal and external tests are conducted to ensure the quality of the print is maintained. Before launching any new inkjet product, ILFORD tests the media with all major printer models and undertakes stringent scientific evaluation to measure the impact of light, ozone, humidity and sensitivity to temperature. It is not only the image’s permanence that is important for a photographer but also the physical integrity of the print. Therefore, ILFORD also undertake a series of physical tests to measure scratch, brittleness and delamination. Professional photographers expect the very best and ILFORD goes that step further to ensure their internal testing processes are not only meticulous but exhaustive so that the standards they set are the benchmark for others to follow. Wilhelm ImagingResearch In addition to internal testing, GALERIE inkjet photo media has also received high print permanence ratings in access of 200 years from Wilhelm Imaging Research, Inc., the world’s leading independent permanence testing laboratory. Results show that ILFORD GALERIE Gold Fibre Silk, Smooth Pearl and Smooth Gloss media achieved a very high level of overall print permanence and dark storage stability ratings. When printed with HP Vivera pigment inks, the papers were found to withstand fading and yellowing for more than 250 years in archival album or dark storage conditions, and are stable for more than 200 years when displayed under glass. The Smooth papers also demonstrated a “very high” resistance to high humidity.
I love watching cumulus clouds billow and tower against a deep blue sky. Lately we have seen some of that with the scattered rain and thunderstorms that are a part of spring. In the early evening Sunday, the sky was changing from mostly cloudy or overcast to partly cloudy, allowing views of the cloudy blooms. I shot a good number of photos and it was difficult to choose what to show here. My shoot ended as the puffy towers passed overhead and no longer showed their profiles. A high-flying aircraft left a thin contrail, seemingly ejected from the clouds, high above it all.
