It was such a valuable and inspirational experience- not only did I get to brush up on some technical skills and hear about Christine’s journey to photographer, I was reminded of the joy that comes with pursuing the things that you love and are passionate about.  As cheesy as that sounds.  I also got the chance to meet some great fellow photographers with years of experience who had great stories and knowledge to share.

We stepped out along the beach at Coyote Point and practiced with with our models, Matt & Sarah- a fun, energetic and adorable couple who were making a stop during their road trip with their awesome dog, Birch.  I loved their chemistry and their free spirit, so I hope I was able to capture this in some of the photos I took.

One of the most interesting tips I learned from Christine at this workshop was to dress the same way your models are dressed- that way when it’s freezing cold, you know exactly how they feel and when its ready to call it a day (or pull out a heater!)  You probably can’t tell, but the heater would have come in handy for Matt & Sarah on this day.

CMPro is part of the Clickin Moms online community. Their website defines CMPro as “an organization of professional women photographers and highly skilled artists who are passionate about photography, who are dedicated to learning and sharing, and whose work demonstrates creativity, vision, and artistic and technical excellence”. Over the years the CM Blog has helped me to learn my craft and inspired me in many ways. Their online forum is made up of women from all around the world and is an amazing resource for all things photography.

I’m so proud to say that I’m now part of the CMPro community! Photography is such a dynamic field so I still feel like I have a lot to learn, but this is a huge accomplishment. I just had to share!

These workshops involve REAL teaching of the methods I employ, and this is a technical and intensive workshop… you will be given the training needed to produce work at a very high level. Below is an image taken of a small creek. This small area is isolated by using a telephoto lens, then cropping top/bottom of the image, to create an expansive feeling to the photograph. The motion of the water is in-focus. To accomplish this, the shutter speed needs to be at 1/60 second or faster. It is dependent on the speed the water is flowing. With an image like this, it is best to use a tripod to stabilize the camera and be selective about composition. This was taken on a sunny day, and this portion of the creek was in the shade.

TIP – When using a tripod, remember to turn-off the image stabilization on the lens.

This is a small portion of a stream cascading down and over rocks.

Waterfalls come in all shapes and sizes. What makes each unique is the way the water has sculpted the rocks surrounding it. The image above was a small section of a creek. The image below is much larger, and the first falls above a gorge that ends in a 50 +/- foot waterfall. This was a foggy and over-cast day in Mount Rainier National Park. The water in this image is not crisp, yet the rocks are sharp. To get this effect, the shutter speed needs to be 1/8 second or slightly slower. With these shutter speeds, the camera needs to be stabilized on a tripod or other method of stabilization. The aperture was F22, which created a larger depth of field, in comparison to the image above.

TIP – When a tripod is unavailable, try using a rock, tree or other object in the environment to stabilize the camera and/or one’s self.

This waterfall was just above a small gorge that ended in a larger falls. It is in Mount Rainier National Park.

Time of year plays a part in capturing great waterfall images. The photos above were taken during the summer months. The image below was taken in the fall. The leaves have fallen from the trees, and offer a full view of the Whatcom Falls. The ground is covered with autumn colored leaves, adding color to the forest floor. This was taken on an over-cast day in October.

The “milking” effect of the waterfall is due to a slow shutter speed. In this case, it was 1/5 second, and a bridge rail was used for camera stabilization. This was shot with a wide-angle lens, and the aperture was F10.

This was taken in the fall, and is a wide-angle shot of Lower Whatcom Falls.

This last image is Snoqualmie Falls at flood stage. The roads to the waterfall had been open a couple of hours earlier. It was flowing at 78,000 cubic feet of water per second, and it was incredibly loud. This was taken with slide film, and scanned to digital.

These locations are great to photograph waterfalls. It takes some planning to capture the photographic image one is seeking. The things to consider are weather, time of year, equipment, and accessibility to the location. In addition, it is good to factor in the costs associated with travel, food and/or lodging. This is Snoqualmie Falls with 78,000 cubic feet of water per second. The road to the falls had opened earlier in the day.

‘The Brand New Show’ – look at as a good example of photographing both flat and 3 dimensional paper projects.

File Types

RAW (on a Nikon it is called NEF (RAW) standing for Nikon electronic format)- These should always be chosen when you are planning to edit an image at all, the file is much bigger than jpeg but the quality for editing is much better.

Jpeg- Blocks colours together to compress file sizes, start to ‘fall apart’ when edited.

Tiff- This is a universal large format file, which all computers can read. This however is slowing becoming obsolete.

Photoshop file- Saves all the meta data (which camera was used, the aperture settings etc.) and is the best for editing, however this is not always suitable for sending to a client as they may not be using Adobe software.

Colour Options

SRGB

Adobe RGB- slightly higher quality than SRGB, although this should also be considered when sending files to a client as again Adobe is not always the used software.

It is also very important to remember to calibrate both your monitor and the printer that is being used. Apple tend to lean towards magenta colouring as a default setting, as generally people tend to prefer warmer toned images, so this needs to be calibrated.

Lighting Setups

Flat object -Even lighting is required.

Three Dimensional -Thinking about the shadows, trying to mimic natural light as much as possible. Thinking about having primary (dominant) and secondary lighting, to compliment each other/ balancing out the shadows as much as is need to look natural.

It is possible to have too much lighting. We only have one sun, which means that in natural light there are only one set of shadows from this single light source (unless there are also artificial light sources around), so to look as natural as possible this needs to replicated in the studio.

Tungsten lights give off a slightly yellow light, as their colour temperature is around 3400 kelvins. As a reference daylight is around 5500 kelvins. Lights which operate at a higher temperature begin to give off blue light.

The auto setting of a camera has a white balance function, this only works if the lights that are being used are of the same type i.e incandescent, florissant etc.

Using the tungsten lights

These are biased towards yellow, but the flash surrounding them is the same colour temperature as daylight. If a direct light is not needed, because the shadows are too strong, then a diffuser should be used. Without the white screen the diffuser causes the shadows to become broken up, however with this added the shadow edges are lost and the shadow becomes much softer. A secondary light source, with a second diffuser can be used, but one should be running at a higher rate than the other, this makes the shadows as soft as possible and very natural looking as though the sun is high in the sky.

Recently, to coincide with the annual Malvern Retreat Art Show, I gave a talk and demonstration on “Light Painting the Still Life”. The audience seemed to be very interested, and apparently everyone enjoyed the talk and demonstration which lasted for three and a half hours. I brought along some things from my collection at the studio, and I set up and light painted the still life below:

As always, I really love giving these talks and light painting demonstrations, and I really enjoyed the enthusiasm of this crowd. It was a fun night!

We (Dur and Luis) started volunteering at PEPY in November 2012. (We were supposed to stay just for a month, but we fell in love with PEPY’s team and the community … that’s another great story to be told next time)

One of the projects we’ve worked on is teaching the basic concepts of photography to a group of students in Chanleas Dai. We ran a photography workshop in two days. The first day was the theory (a bit boring but necessary). We also looked at how common subjects, like trips, can be documented. To make it dynamic we showed our own video about our personal life working for Zoom In. Why? Because we are travellers and Siem Reap receives so many tourists so there are potential opportunities for young students who want to get work in videos and photography.

The second class was practicing the theory with a real camera!!! Some students were the photographers and the others were their models, and then they swap over. It was the best part of the workshop because they really enjoyed shooting and posing – they picked it up easily!
At the end everybody was so exited; they were laughing, happy, shooting, interacting with each other, making their opinions about the pictures – it was so much fun!!! Now they have their own portraits printed and they say: “Wow I looking very good and pretty”, “I took this picture? It looks so good I love it!!”

And let me tell you, she did not disappoint. Brooke is such a sweetheart, with fierce talent and a desire to see others succeed and grow in what they love to do. Sean, her hubby and second shooter, is the calm to her wonderful storm and is quite the image maker himself. They both shared so much valuable information with the attendees (ranging from Moms wishing they knew how to use their camera, to Pros looking to just learn more and get to know others in our field of work). I watched a few of the beginners go from almost scared of this mysterious contraption in their hands, to confidently taking beautiful images over the course of the day! Everyone walked away at the end of it feeling more confident, encouraged, and with a few new friends!

The second half of the day was the shooting portion of the workshop…and it was to die for. I heard oohs and ahhs all day long! We were in heaven with the dreamy light, huge location and gorgeous (and patient) models who worked it as if it wasn’t 50 degrees out! Regina, you are such a gorgeous mix of sassy and flat out stunning! Thank you for being so fun and beautiful and patient with all of us! Alexandra and Ted, you two have such a sweetness between you and it was a total joy getting to photograph you! Of course it doesn’t hurt that you’re such a good lookin’ couple too. Congratulations on your recent Engagement! YAY!

Brooke & Sean are already planning their next Workshop, so if you’re looking for one I HIGHLY recommend theirs! It’s all about winter in my beautiful city…..

This is a photograph I took when I took a Fashion Photography Workshop; Lidsay Alder taught the class and it was an amazing experience. I have to say that I was slightly interested about fashion photography before I took the class but after I was ON FIRE to start building my portfolio for fashion photography. Now I’m completely submerged in it. Comments welcome! if sharing please give credit! Thanks and enjoy!

Below is a photograph of starlings in a tree covered with hoarfrost. The dark tone of the birds is in direct contrast to the white of the sky and tree limbs. For the frost to appear white, it is the time to over-expose the photograph. The dark tone of the birds will yield subtle colors and details. This image was shot at 100 ISO, 1/60 second shutter speed, and F8 aperture. I chose F8 to bring a larger depth of field to the image, yet knew sharpness didn’t matter for the background. The fog had not lifted too far from the ground, and was a mono-chromatic white.

The reason that snow or white subjects need to be over-exposed is due to the nature of the camera’s light meter. The light meter reads the world as 18% gray, when it reads 0 (or the center of the meter). To compensate, the exposure needs to let more light into the camera, so the whites look white.

This second image has foreground, midground and background. I wanted to show the fore and mid ground in focus, and let the fog become the backdrop for the image. This photograph was shot at 200 ISO, 1/60 second shutter speed, and F10 aperture. It gave me the depth of field I was wanting to show in the image. The use of the tree branches at the top helps create a feeling of depth in the image, and help show the subject.

This last image was a long-needle pine tree covered in hoarfrost. The ice crystals still maintained their crispness, and the cones were a nice contrast to the rest of the photo. I used a shallower depth of field to blur the background, and bring the viewer’s focus to the cones, needles and hoarfrost in the front of the image. The exposure for this one is 200 ISO, 1/60 second shutter speed, and F5.6 aperture.

The biggest “wow” moments I got from the class were while I was going over the visuals for understanding aperture, as well as the visual exercise below that I created showing how much of an impact focal length has on your image.
