I’m not trying anymore. I’m too hurt to keep chasing someone who doesn’t want to be caught. so what I’m really saying is that I give up. I’m tired of being the girlfriend who tries to call at least once a day, or who tries to patch things up by saying sorry just to mend the argument even when she knows it’s not her fault. I’m sick of being the one who stays up at night with tears in her eyes and a pen and paper in hand waiting for ANY sign to show me that I’m not alone in this. I guess I’m tired of convincing myself that he cares when I know that he doesn’t.

In her book, “On Photography”, Susan Sontag observed that photography was essentially aggressive citing terms like “shoot”, “take” and “capture” to describe what one does in the “act of photography”. As all photographs must be, it is obviously an image of something but precisely of what I couldn’t say.

Here it is, these are the two series I presented to my review board for Art Review. As frank would put it, I “won Art Review.” below is my statement of intent, have a read, view the images, and please feel free to leave comments.

Statement of Intent

I couple my role as a photographic artist with the field of sociology where I focus, generally, on social [sub] cultures and their influence on societies. In my series “This Is Not Cliché: Beautiful Photography” I sought to “pervert and abstract social perceptions” by creating cliché images that are tweaked just enough to interrupt the viewers expectations. This approach gave me the opportunity to break away from my photojournalistic style of photography and better learn direction of models, expression of creative ideas, and control over lighting, compositions, and new technology.

There is no direct visual influence for this series however, the creative drive and social candor of my work is in correlation to the work of Andy Warhol. As Warhol so aptly stated, “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” With that I am changing how people view familiar themes, mediums, and imagery.

I chose to do this series using a digital camera if not for the convenient nature of digital photography but to emulate the snap shot style of photos which most cliché images are taken. The thought that many of these images could be taken by “any 12 year old with a point and shoot,” as a friend of mine once said, challenges me to create better images. I feel these 10×15 inkjet images portray my skill and concept adequately.

My second series, “Trash Receptacles,” is intended to be a social study. I wanted to bring awareness to these structures by shooting them straight on, full color, and including a small segment of their surroundings. Trash Receptacles have been designed, advertised, bought as single units and in mass quantities, and used on a day-to-day basis. After this realization trash receptacles became much like a forgotten culture to me. I want the viewer to recognize these structures similarities, differences, and surroundings just as they would a person in a street photograph.

The presentation & concept is loosely based on the posters “Doors of Dublin” & locally done “Doors of Marquette” as well as the series “John’s of Ann Arbor,” a playful poster in the bathroom of the State Street Jimmy John’s sandwich shop which depicts toilets of notable buildings of down town Ann Arbor. After starting the series I discovered other structure documentation based photography such as the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher who photographed industrial structures.

I was recently asked to take a photo for my good friends Art In Thesis’s EP cover. With a very vauge subject of telephone poles the ideas to be had were endless. With a failed attempt up north in Clearield/West Haven/West Point/Roy/Clinton/etc. I took it upon myself to travel into the middle of nowhere. The first place that came to mind was Magna, UT. Magna’s claim to fame is the Saltair and the Kennecot Copper Mine. Magna is about 20miles West of Salt Lake City. Well one morning with nothing to do and a due date about 24hrs away I decided to venture out there and see what was there. Well I was brilliant, apparently middle of nowhere= telephone poles heaven. With about a billion options to choose from I stopped about every 5 minutes and scoped the area. Even with about a billion poles there was always a tiny thing wrong, making the photo pretty useless.

With a little bit of luck and lack of direction I found a spot that looked very promising. I got out of my car to a very cold air. And with my luck I forgot to bring any sort of glove or hand warming mechanism. Also my (bad) luck brought traffic for about 15 mintues. I mean this was out in BFE and no cars in sight when I parked off the side of the road on a dirt mound but the second I step out my car 15 tractors decide to come my way. Even with all the struggles of hustlin’ a photo I managed to get a shot I’m pretty pleased with. I’ve included some of my edits of the photo. None of which are the actual cover, which I haven’t even seen but I’m sure looks awesome. I think edited by Mason or Jeff or maybe Skyler but most likely not Jaron or Mike and for good reason. lol

Be sure to check out Art In Thesis on Myspace and Facebook. Most importanly pick up a copy of the CD when it drops, be sure to check them out live too. Their EP release show is December 18th at The Basement in Ogden, UT.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Savvy Magazine, The Red Carpet Pageant, Karaliene Productions and New York’s own Amaris Acosta invite you to attend The Queens Corner Pageant Networking Event

NEW YORK, NY– NOVEMBER 30, 2009 – Think you have what it takes to be a Queen? Let the experts decide at the second annual Queen’s Corner (www.the-queens-corner.com) pageant networking event, taking place on Saturday, February 27th at the Hilton Gateway in Newark, New Jersey. Hosted by founder and former Miss Caribbean USA, Amaris Acosta, the Queen’s Corner attracted contestants, exhibitors and titleholders from the tri-state area and beyond at last year’s event and has become the premiere social networking event and expo of its kind for the East Coast. This year’s sponsors include Savvy Magazine, The Red Carpet Pageant & Prom andKaraliene Productions.

The Queen’s Corner is a day long series of workshops that provide attendees with advice and tips in various areas including interview, nutrition and competition prep from some of the industry’s premier pageant coaches and top titleholders. Last year’s event featured a keynote address by Miss USA 2005, Chelsea Cooley. This year’s keynote address will be delivered by famed media coach, Don Baker of Don Baker Communications.

The event also provides a platform for many of the pageant world’s top vendors with the opportunity to showcase their wares to a large number of contestants who are seeking to gain an advantage over the competition.

“The Queen’s Corner is currently in its second year and my goal this year, as always, is to make available the best in pageantry to the tri-state area,” says Acosta “ Especially in NY we tend to have access to high-fashion but not pageant necessities. Often we have to travel quite a bit for coaches, pageant attire and photographers. This becomes especially costly for at-large delegates. So I wanted to bring a bunch of pageant resources under one roof and give the girls a chance to network, have an extra appearance under their belt, and be featured in a way that is not often found on the upper East Coast.”

Interested in attending this year’s event? Tickets for the Queen’s Corner are currently being sold via the event website for an early bird discount of $25. For more information about The Queen’s Corner or to purchase tickets, visit: www.the-queens-corner.com.

ABOUT AMARIS ACOSTA

AMARIS ACOSTA has a habit of always saying what everyone else is thinking- which doesn’t exactly make you the most popular girl in school. Luckily, she found a place where it can be useful- she can be seen stumping celebrities and common folk alike in the lifestyle show En la Escena, where she has interviewed distinguished personalities such as Iman, Mikki Taylor, Andre Harrell and Phillip Bloch. Prior to joining ELE, Amaris gave pageants a try and was awarded the title of Miss Caribbean USA, placing in the semifinals of Miss Caraibes Hibiscus International. Not one to forget her start, she now runs the Miss Brooklyn Scholarship Competition, a preliminary to Miss America. Active in her community, Amaris volunteers her spare time to various local charities including the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and CocoaChic’s TeenChic. To learn more about Amaris, visit www.amarisacosta.com

This past summer while Bill and I were exploring Acadia National Park in Maine, I spotted a wildflower I’d never seen before. It had clusters of tightly packed white and yellow flowers. I had no idea what it was. I eventually discovered that it was Pearly Everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea), a native plant and member of the aster family. Later in the week, I was able to photograph a lovely group of Pearly Everlasting ath the Wild Gardens of Acadia - a great location for learning about the plants and ecosystems at Acadia National Park.

Here are some of my photos of Pearly Everlasting from Acadia National Park.

A view of the entire group of flowers

(c) 2009 Patty Hankins

A little closer in view that gives a great sense of the texture of the unopened flowers.

(c)2009 Patty Hankins

And finally two side views of the flowers with different depths of field. I’m still trying to decide which of these two photos I like better.

(c) 2009 Patty Hankins

(c) 2009 Patty Hankins

I really enjoyed photographing the Pearly Everlasting at the Wild Gardens of Acadia. Next summer, I’ll definitely look for more Pearly Everlasting, I’d like to photograph some with the flowers fully open.

To this day we’ve been blessed with amazing clients. It seems that every person, family or a couple that we shoot were created to be on photos. And the past weekend wasn’t exception. It was a lot of fun to work with the Ice family. Griffith(the older boy) and Owen were so much fun and had so much energy, that I had to literally run after them with my cameras. Kids definitely bring fun and smiles to our photos, and photographing such cuties was a wonderful experience. Here are some favs from the day!

Delphi site is located in lower central Greece, on multiple plateau/terraces along the slope of Moun

Delphi site is located in lower central Greece, on multiple plateau/terraces along the slope of Mount Parnassus, and includes the Sanctuary of Apollo, the site of the ancient Oracle. This semicircular spur is known as Phaedriades, and overlooks the Pleistos Valley. Southwest of Delphi, about 15 km (9.3 mi) away, is the harbor-city of Kirrha on the Corinthian Gulf.

The name Delphois comes from the same root as δελφύς delphus, “womb” and may indicate archaic veneration of Gaia, Grandmother Earth, and the Earth Goddess at the site. Apollo is connected with the site by his epithet Δελφίνιος Delphinios, “the Delphinian.” The epithet is connected with dolphins (Greek δελφίς,-ῖνος) in the Homeric Hymn to Apollo (line 400), recounting the legend of how Apollo first came to Delphi in the shape of a dolphin, carrying Cretan priests on his back. The Homeric name of the oracle is Pytho (Πυθώ).
Another legend held that Apollo walked to Delphi from the north and stopped at Tempe, a city in Thessaly to pick laurel, a plant sacred to him (generally known in English as the bay tree). In commemoration of this legend, the winners at the Pythian Games received a wreath of laurel (bay leaves) picked in the Temple.

Delphi became the site of a major temple to Phoebus Apollo, as well as the Pythian Games and the famous prehistoric oracle. Even in Roman times, hundreds of votive statues remained, described by Pliny the Younger and seen by Pausanias. Supposedly carved into the temple were three phrases: γνωθι σεαυτόν (gnōthi seautón = “know thyself”) and μηδέν άγαν (mēdén ágan = “nothing in excess”), and Εγγύα πάρα δ’ατη (engýa pára d’atē = “make a pledge and mischief is nigh”),[8] as well as a large letter E. Among other things epsilon signifies the number 5. Plutarch’s essay on the meaning of the “E at Delphi” is the only literary source for the inscription. In ancient times, the origin of these phrases was attributed to one or more of the Seven Sages of Greece,[10] though ancient as well as modern scholars have doubted the legitimacy of such ascriptions. According to one pair of scholars, “The actual authorship of the three maxims set up on the Delphian temple may be left uncertain. Most likely they were popular proverbs, which tended later to be attributed to particular sages.”
From a late myth that deviates from much older ones, when young, Apollo killed the chthonic serpent Python, named Pythia in older myths, but according to some later accounts his wife, Pythia, who lived beside the Castalian Spring, according to some because Python had attempted to rape Leto while she was pregnant with Apollo and Artemis. The bodies of the pair were draped around his Rod, which, with the wings created the caduceus symbolic of the god. This spring flowed toward the temple but disappeared beneath, creating a cleft which emitted vapors that caused the Oracle at Delphi to give her prophecies. Apollo killed Python but had to be punished for it, since she was a child of Gaia. The shrine dedicated to Apollo was originally dedicated to Gaia and then, possibly to Poseidon. The name Pythia remained as the title of the Delphic Oracle. As punishment for this murder Apollo was sent to serve in menial tasks for eight years. A festival, the Septeria, was performed annually portraying the slaying of the serpent, the flight, the atonement and the return of the God. The Pythian Games took place every four years to commemorate his victory. Another regular Delphi festival was the “Theophania” (Θεοφάνεια), an annual festival in spring celebrating the return of Apollo from his winter quarters in Hyperborea. The culmination of the festival was a display of an image of the gods, usually hidden in the sanctuary, to worshippers. The “Theoxenia” was held each summer, centred on a feast for “gods and ambassadors from other states”.
Erwin Rohde wrote that the Python was an earth spirit, who was conquered by Apollo, and buried under the Omphalos, and that it is a case of one deity setting up a temple on the grave of another.Another view holds that Apollo was a fairly recent addition to the Greek pantheon coming originally from Lydia. The Etruscans coming from northern Anatolia also worshiped Apollo, and it may be that he was originally identical with Mesopotamian Aplu, an Akkadian title meaning “son”, originally given to the plague God Nergal, son of Enlil. Apollo Smintheus (Greek Απόλλων Σμινθεύς), the mouse killer eliminates mice, a primary cause of disease, hence he promotes preventive medicine.

Frank Cordelle’s The Century Project was on display at the Bamboo Grove in SE PDX during October, and I almost forgot about it, until my BFF and I were out doing errands on a rainy afternoon, and made a mad dash to the gallery on closing day. Wyoming-based photographer “assembled 100 photographs of women ranging in age from newborn to within spitting distance of the century mark.” This sentence from the Willamette Week review initially grabbed my attention for a variety of reasons. I’m not only interested in fine art b/w photography, but in the issues many women grapple with including body image, self esteem, aging.

All of the women were photographed in the nude, and the photos are accompanied by their own commentary. The photos were fine. Nothing spectacular, technically or artistically speaking. Most noteworthy to me, however, was how many women thanked the photographer for providing a forum for them to be able to finally overcome or let go of some serious and debilitating issues. The project allowed them to discover a healthier self/body image and through that, they seemed to have gained a tremendous amount of confidence. I noticed that it was the women under 35 who thanked Cordelle outright. Many, er, most of the younger women also offered up lengthy and revealing commentary about the issues they face(d) in their lives. About sexual, physical, emotional abuse. Addiction. Disease. Discrimination. Less than stellar relationships. Terrible losses. Half way through the exhibit, I stopped reading their words. It was info overload and my brain was full.

What fascinated me was that most of the older women (55+) provided only brief, humorous quips for commentary. (“Men keep asking me to marry them” and “My husband might say that sure is some picture.“) These ladies have nothing left to process. Nothing to purge. They aren’t grappling with issues of identity or dependence. And, certainly in their nakedness, they’ve got nothing to prove. The younger women are still clearly channeling their pain, what they lack, what they were – not what they have become, at least in any authentic sense (to me, their reader/viewer and possibly ally). In sharp contrast, the crones shine far beyond their wrinkled bodies. They vogue in front of the camera. They offer wide smiles. They beam pure wisdom. There’s nothing left to say and they are light and enlightened because of it.

There’s hope in aging after all.
