Checkpoint Liberty and Berlin in 1996
Nick Arvin's Sporadic BlogI took the photo above in 1996 in Berlin. The location is Checkpoint Charlie, the most famous of the guardhouses that monitored crossings between East and West Berlin. The sign in the foreground was a warning that stood in front of the checkpoint. In 1996, Checkpoint Charlie was slated for demolition so that the site could be redeveloped. Artist John Powers obtained permission to place a large, gold-painted replica of the Statue of Liberty on top of the checkpoint and leave it there for a few months before it would be scraped. He named the piece Checkpoint Liberty. The Berlin Wall had come down seven years earlier, and now only a couple of short sections of wall remained standing. Half of Berlin had been turned into a vast, extraordinary construction project; looking east, construction cranes towered everywhere across the horizon. Defending champion Char Young Kim, a 3 time winner in 2012, returns to defend her title. Incidentally, in the picture above they have the champions between 2008 and 2012…except for 2009. That missing champion, who won’t be in the field this week, is the 2009 winner So Yeon Ryu, who is now one of the great players, and Major winner, on the LPGA. I was so honored that they drove all the way down from Carlsbad area to have me take their portraits! It was a beautiful Sunny San Diego afternoon, we could not have asked for better weather! I rediscovered one of my favorite locations which is the Sweetwater bridge in Rancho San Diego. It is a gorgeous rustic car bridge that has some beautiful hiking trails behind it! Female Military Couple Wins Wedding Contest in New York City
GAY MARRIAGE USAThe winner of the NuVo Condoms Wedding Contest was announced today and the winner is military couple, Amanda Ortiz and Rachel Murphy. The couple will receive an all-expenses paid wedding in New York City on June 30 during the NYC Gay Pride Festival. Free wedding services will be provided by a range of companies including: Staged Selection Process In late April, NuVo Condoms announced it would be holding a same-sex wedding contest. Hearing the call for contestants, facebook pages Gay Marriage New York (GMNY) and Gay Marriage USA (GMUSA) responded and featured the contest information. NuVo was subsequently inundated with submission from couples all around the nation wanting to try their luck at winning the unique contest (see GMNY feature and GMUSA feature). Due to the intense response, additional rounds were added to the contest. Contestants were first required to post their image/story on the NuVo Condoms facebook page. Nifty Energetic Nice Extrovert - NENEIbragim Todashev UPDATE: Boston bombing deceased suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev is now connected to the triple homicide back in 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts. Ibragim Todashev was shot and killed Wednesday morning May 22,2013 after attacking a FBI agent in Florida. Ibragim was a mixed martial arts fighter with the boston bomber suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev. According to reports, while investigators waited for DNA reports from the triple murder, they questioned Ibragim, along with everyone else that made contact with Tamerlan. Two Massachusetts state policed and a Boston-based FBI agent questioned Ibragim in his Orlando, Florida home and during questioning, Ibragim grabbed a knife and attacked one of the officials. The attack took place after Todashev confessed to the 2011 triple homicide, where he also implicated Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Preliminary investigations revealed that the law enforcement official that shot and killed Todashev was acting in self-defense. It’s reported that the three m
