I often get asked what tools I use as a work at home and mobile business consultant.  So here are the tools that I use:

• Dell Laptop with Microsoft Office Applications and Vista OS have served me well
• Seagate FreeAgent Backup Disk allows me to backup my documents at least once a week
• Logitech Wireless Mouse allows me freedom from the cord
• HP Photosmart C5780 All-in-One (Printer-Scanner-Copier) gives me all I need in one place and prints well
• Cable Internet that  is fast and now reliable
• Cisco Linksys Wireless Router so that I can me mobile with my laptop around the house
• Backberry Tour Cell Phone so that I can stay connected to email and Twitter while on the road
• Yahoo Mail (and Calendar) is what I live and die with it and allows me to stay organized
• Google Gmail email which I use as a backup just in case Yahoo is down or when I need a 2nd email address
• 1and1 for my website and is was easy to create the site and make changes
• Twitter to communicate with others which I have found to be easy to use for reading and sending tweets
• Hootsuite which I use to monitor Twitter mentions and to schedule Tweets
• Ubertwitter which I use to read and send tweets from my Blackberry cell phone
• Linkedin is a great tool to stay connected with people and the Linkedin groups provide me with great information
• Facebook is an avenue for people to connect with me and I’m still developing my strategy for its use
• Cisco Flip video camera is easy to use and makes it easy to post videos to YouTube
• YouTube is a great place to place videos
• Flickr is where I place any pictures that I want others to see such as group events
• WordPress for my blog posts and have found it very easy to use
• Intuit Quickbooks for accounting
• Constant Contact for Email Newletters to clients and partners

I recommend all of the above.  All are great tools and easy to use.  Many are no cost tools.  I suggest that other consultants do the same in mentioning the tools they use to assist newer consultants coming behind you.  Feel free to send me comments on any of the above tools.  It does take time to learn these tools so make sure that you dedicate the necessary time whenever you select a new tool to learn it.  I’m not looking at adding to the list of tools at this time but you do need to be flexible.  Have fun learning and experimenting.

A friend of mine, a manager at Best Buy, send me a ‘heads up’ email after he read my posting about HP’s lack of adequate support for Windows 7 a couple of days ago.

His issue has to do with a ‘high-end’ HP PhotoSmart C6180 that will not SCAN documents/photographs into a Windows 7 folder. My friend, ‘Bob,’ raised a trouble ticket with HP on October 26.

Bob, is one of the most EXPERIENCED and proficient PC guys I have ever had the pleasure to deal with. He knows his PC stuff inside out. He started testing Windows 7 the day the beta was available — among other things because he knew I was interested in getting a Windows 7 machine. So, that is the background. Bob, when it comes to PCs and Windows is an ‘insider.’ That is what makes HP’s pathetic attempts to ‘fob’ him off both amusing and sad at the same time.

For a start, we now have proof that they really must be hiring clowns as techies at HP. The email Bob forwarded to me, that he had received from HP, has nine (9), yes, nine, ‘RE:’s on the SUBJECT LINE! God have mercy. OK, so this shows that there has been, whatever, nine, maybe ten, replies to this email … BUT you would THINK that the HP person would delete some of these RE:s.

Printer-giant Hewlett Packard (HP) is set to release a new line of Photosmart printers this October.

The HP Photosmart C4680 is billed as the ideal solution for home-based scanning, copying and printing, letting you quickly and easily view your photos and documents for printing on the machine’s colour display.

More specifically, the new line of printers features improved support for Apple’s iPhone and iPod users. HP wants families who use these gadgets to easily print photos. It’s been a very very long time since I was exciting about using a printer. A bit like using an uninterruptible power supply or a backup system!

But with it’s latest all-in one printer/scanner/fax, H-P makes printing cool again.

The Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web (with the money H-P spends in marketing, it could have easily found a more shorter and sexier name!) uses the same printing engine than the currently shipping Photosmart Premium C8180 – a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth multi-function printer which it will be replacing – but with an iPod touch-like capacitive touchscreen instead of the current smaller screen and series of buttons, and combined with H-P’s Apps Studio; yet another applications store.

And just as with the iPhone, Palm Pre, etc., it will soon be possible to download apps for your printer!

At the launch event earlier today hosted at Al Gore’s Current TV studios in San Francisco, H-P showed apps from USA Today, Google, Fandango, Coupons.com, DreamWorks Animation, Nickelodeon, Web Sudoku, Weathernews as well as the company’s online site Snapfish.

With these apps, you’ll be able to customize, choose, print… daily news, maps, coupons, coloring pages, movie tickets, recipes, personal calendars and more – all at the touch of a finger.

Under the hood, the Web printer is running Linux with Nokia’s Qt application and graphical-user interface framework.

The Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web will be available in the U.S. in September for $399 (the current Photosmart Premium, model C8180, is being discounted at less than $250 on Amazon.com) and next year for the rest of the world.

I am having the most difficult time installing an HP 309a Photosmart printer. It states that it’s so easy to use. #1 – I don’t use Vista. Never trusted it from the beginning, so I have never even tried it. #2 I don’t have IE8 on my machine either. #3 I’m pretty much a techie geek and can figures most things out.

The WHY the F&^* isn’t this stupid software working. Sure, I can get the damn printer on the network. But for heavens sake, part of the reason I bought the damn thing was to print on CDs. (Plus I needed a new fax machine). I can’t even get the stupid software to start. It says it’s loaded. No errors in the event viewer. No errors in any logs anywhere. No viruses. No spyware. WTF????!!!!

I am about to go insane. And of course, why did I have to do this on Memorial Day weekend?? This sucks. I had confidence that HP would know what it’s doing. But I have confidence no more. I should’ve stuck with Canon.

Printers are hardly the most exciting of products, but this is no ordinary printer. Beneath its bland white exterior lies some pretty slick technology, stuff more akin to desktops than desktop printers. It’s got Wi-Fi, USB, built-in memory card reader, ethernet, and LCD display and DLNA certification. All that and it also manages high-resolution photo quality printing at high speeds. It’s just a shame it looks so plain, might we suggest a nice glossy black finish next time?

Recurrently, I’m asked about what tools I used to create the book. A colophon is a brief description describing production notes relevant to a edition of a book.

Here’s the Colophon of Pomodoro Technique Illustrated:

I made the drawings in an A6, top spiral, 80 sheets pad from Esselte. The pad is Nordic Swan environmentally labeled and the sheets has 5×5 mm squares, no holes, and wood free 60 gr/m2 paper.

I did the pencil drawings with a BIC Matic mechanical pencil with 0.7 mm HB leads. Then I added water color from a Color & Co paint set filled with 6 tempera blocks in Size 2 (Ø 57 mm and altitude 19 mm) and in the following colors: Gold Yellow, Carmine, Ultramarine, Brilliant Green, Black and White. Finally, I scanned them with a HP Photosmart 1200 Photo Scanner in 300 dpi, 24-bit color.

The spiral pad, the mechanical pencil, the watercolor paint set and the photo scanner are all inexpensive, simple tools. I’m convinced that the content, the ideas and the way something is explained is more important than the quality, the sophistication, and the price of the tools.

In the running text, I use Goudy Old Style, a serif typeface originally created by Frederic W. Goudy in 1916. Headlines have Franklin Gothic, a sans-serif typeface designed by Morris Fuller Benton in 1902 and probably named after Benjamin Franklin.

Adquiri uma HP photosmart c4480 que possui respectivamente os cartuchos 74 e 75, até ai tudo bem, até a hora que precisei recarregar pois ela indicava que os cartuchos estavam vazios (quando ela avisa isso se recusa a imprimir qualquer coisa), recarreguei os dois e coloquei nela, como nao achei em lugar nenhum um procedimento para Resetá-los estava na esperança (afinal ela é a ultima que morre ) de que funcionasse, pois é nao funcionou ai pesquizando em alguns foruns vi que esses cartuchos não resetam e sim é a propria impressora que tem de ser resetada.

Bem vamos ao procedimento de reseta-la:

• Desligue o cabo usb do computador.
• Com a impressora ligada segure os botões “cancelar” e “copia colorida” simultaneamente.
• Ainda segurando os botoes Desligue a impressora puxando o cabo de força,nao solte os botões.
• Espere uns 5 segundos e ligue novamente o cabo de força
• Agora sim solte os botões
• Na tela da impressora aparecera aquela primeira tela de configurar o idioma e logo depois o alinhamento dos cartucho, faça todos.
• Pronto a impressora voltou as configuraçoes de fábrica

um ponto ruim é que nao vai ser mais mostrado o nivel dos cartuchos mas é só assim que conseguimos (enganar) ela para poder recarregar sempre.

The HP Photosmart C4580 is a three in one printer from HP that does scanning, copying, and printing. It also has wifi, and can print photos that supposedly look real.This HP printer prints very quick compared to my old one, but it does shake the table more. My solution for this was just to put it on a more solid surface, and then it was fine. It didn’t necessarily have to be within cable reach of my MacBook Pro because it was a wifi printer after all.

Most things about this printer are pros. After printing a sample image on HP’s special photo paper, I was impressed by the print quality, considering this was a consumer printer, not a professional one that was built from the start to print photos. It connected to my wireless router even though it said that it only worked with DHCP networks, and mine was PPPoE.

The print quality obviously beat my old one, but my old one was a 5 year old inkjet after all. There’s also an SD card reader on the front, but I haven’t used that. I also haven’t tried scanning anything yet, but those features aren’t something I use on a daily basis. Printing is the most important thing, and the HP printer does it wonderfully.When you’re not using it, take out the paper and fold up the piece of plastic that covers the paper hole, and it’ll protect the inside from dust and other dirty things. Perhaps one of the only things I dont like about its design is that it has two HP logos on it, and it’s not worth spending 2 apple stickers covering both, so I only covered the one on the top.

And the printer DOES print very well…. when it prints. And a problem with it is that sometimes, after going idle, the printer does not wake up. I had to pull out the power cable and then put it back in just to restart the printer. This is a big problem if you don’t want to turn it off, because it takes a bit of time to turn back on. However, it works fine when you plug it into your Mac/PC with a usb cable.

And the sleep idling is very occasional, and doesn’t happen all of the time. Because of that, I’d rate this printer a 4.5/5. It’s a great printer, with a lot of functionality, for a measly price of around 100 dollars depending on where you get it from. And it prints excellent, excellent photos using HP’s photo paper. The only problem is the idling, but if you use a USB cable, or don’t mind turning it off, it’s not a problem at all.

Tiskalnik HP OfficeJet Pro L7590 omogoča nizke stroške tiskanja ter kakovost in hitrost laserskih tiskalnikov, saj v minuti natisne 12 črno-belih strani in 10 barvnih. S tiskalnikom Pro L7590 je tiskanje do 50 odstotkov cenejše, saj pri svojem delu uporablja tiskalniške kartuše 88XL, ki v laserski kakovosti natisnejo 2500 črnih strani in 900 barvnih strani. Za vse, ki bi radi kar doma natisnili nekoliko večje fotografije, je HP predstavil tiskalnik HP Photosmart B8550. Tiskalnik namreč omogoča tiskanje slik v velikostih do 33×48 cm, kar pomeni, da vam nekoliko večjih slik, ki jih lahko obesite na steno, ni več treba pošiljati v fotografske studie. HP Photosmart B8550 vključuje tudi sistem petih ločenih črnil, kar zagotavlja višjo kakovost izpisa, poleg tega pa uporabniki prihranijo pri črnilu, saj morajo zamenjati le tisto črnilo, ki ga zmanjka.

Seveda pa vse ni le v tehnologiji – HP Photosmart B8550 postavlja tudi nove mejnike na področju prijaznosti do okolja. Glava tiskalnika je namreč izdelana iz recikliranih starih kartuš in drugih delov tiskalnika, ki so bili pridobljeni prek programa reciklaže HP Planet Partners. Uporabljeni so tudi reciklirani materiali iz drugih virov, kot so reciklirane plastenke za vodo.

Tiskalnik je povezljiv prek vmesnika USB 2.0. Podpira operacijske sisteme Windows Vista, Windows XP in Mac OS X različic 10.4 ali 10.5.

Je m’attendais à beaucoup de difficultés pour utiliser mon imprimante HP Photosmart 2575 afin de scanner plusieurs documents; en fait il n’y a rien de plus simple.

Tout ce dont vous aurez besoin, c’est de XSane, un logiciel très efficace pour utiliser votre scanner. Vérifiez tout d’abord s’il n’est pas déja installé. Sous Ubuntu 8.04, déroulez le menu Applications, Graphisme. Il devrait y être éventuellement (scanneur d’image XSane).

Pour l’utiliser, allumez d’abord votre imprimante. Elle devrait être reconnue automatiquement. Lancez ensuite l’application XSane, choisissez votre “tout-en-un” puis Validez. La fenêtre du logiciel s’ouvre. Vous pouvez également ouvrir une fenêtre d’aperçu (et quelques autres -histogramme, options standards…- , à tester). Si ces fenêtres ne s’ouvrent pas, déroulez le menu Fenêtres et cliquez sur celles que vous voulez voir apparaître.

Définissez les options de scan (couleur, n&b, mode trait; résolution;…) puis lancez l’aperçu avant numérisation en cliquant sur Acquisition de l’aperçu dans la fenêtre d’aperçu, comme son nom l’indique. Vous pouvez redimensionner la partie que vous voulez scanner. Cliquez ensuite (dans la fenêtre principale de XSane) sur Numériser si cela vous convient; sinon modifiez les options et faites éventuellement une nouvelle prévisualisation.

Une fois le document scanné, XSane l’affiche. Pour l’enregistrer, cliquez sur Sauver l’image. Choisissez l’emplacement où vous désirez sauvegarder votre scan, choisissez sous quel type enregistrer le document (JPEG, PDF,…), donnez lui un nom puis cliquez sur Enregistrer… c’est fait !

XSane dispose de nombreuses options que je n’ai pas développées ici faute de place, ou simplement parce que je n’en ai pas eu besoin. N’hésitez pas à faire des essais !
