First off, happy belated Mother’s Day to all you moms out there. I didn’t get a chance to post anything yesterday, so I missed the chance to actually send the wishes on the actual holiday.

I spent the afternoon yesterday with my family at my sister’s apartment on Mt. Washington, which is featured above and many other times on this blog and my flickr page. I hadn’t planned on taking very many pictures, as it seems like I have every conceivable view from the various overlooks that watch over the city, but there is just something about being up there that you can’t help but take a few brackets. I did try something a little different (which you will see in a few days), which was put the 70-200 2.8 on and get some HDRs at 200mm. That is an incredible piece of glass, and I think that I may start using it more often.

I also tried to do something a little different with today’s shot in terms of composition. Most of the time that a photographer is up there (myself included) they get so mesmerized by the skyline that they forget about Station Square, which is right below the far overlooks. In the summer, the trees grow so thick that you can’t really see through them, but they aren’t quite at that point yet, so I thought that I would give a view both of the far end of Station Square as well as the skyline. It was pretty cool how the entire city was glowing, even Station Square, and how the parking lot looked like some kind of spaceship ready to take off.

This is a seven exposure HDR processed with Photomatix with some touch up work done in CS5. I masked in the entire +3 exposure, as there wasn’t a whole lot of noise in the sky, but I wanted to even it out a bit. I also used the -3 exposure to mask in all the names you see on top of the buildings, as the HDR process really blew them out. Adjusted the red tones down slightly, as they seemed to be too warm for the rest of the shot, and then ran it through both Color Efex (Tonal Contrast and Color Cast Removal) and onOne PhotoTools (sharpening) to give it more punch.

I was going to post the shots that I posted over the weekend, but I don’t think that they really fit the other shot. You are more than welcome to head on over to my flickr site to check on my posts from Saturday and Sunday.

So for some reason last week, my e-mail address associated with my blog was not allowing me to comment on any other blog, no matter the host site. I’ve since updated my e-mail so I should be back to commenting as normal.

Hope you all had a great weekend and have a happy Monday.

“Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.”
~Anthony J. D’Angelo

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve done a Friday post so I thought it was about time to do one. This spring we have had 34 days of rain and only 14 without (and even fewer sunny ones), I thought about the above quote and how appropriate it seemed for anyone living in the western Pennsylvania region over the last few weeks.

I took this shot on one of those few sunny days we’ve had this spring walking around downtown, waiting for the wife and some friends to get out of work. It was actually a perfect day to go on a photowalk, as it wasn’t too warm, there was a slight breeze, the lighting was great in downtown, streets weren’t overly crowded for a Thursday afternoon. I kind of have a thing for capturing sunflares, and when the reflection of one in the USX Building caught my eye, I couldn’t resist the shot.

This is a five exposure HDR processed in Photomatix, Photoshop CS5 and onOne PhotoTools. I did a bit of masking in the sky to get rid of a few halos and dust spots, as well as masked in the cars on the lower right to get rid of some ghosting. Lowered overall saturation and applied the Turbo Boost effect in PhotoTools and called it a wrap.

Thanks for stopping by this week and I hope you all enjoy your weekend.

Really, the whole idea of a daily photo blog is to force you into more creativity and finding opportunities for photographs beyond the usual. This was a good example of it. I set my camera for a relatively long exposure (1/8th of a second) and spun the camera (handheld) while I took the picture. I tried it a lot, and came out with a few decent, interesting images. I then processed it in photoshop with some fun tricks- OnOne PhotoTools to get some glowy blur, and Topaz Adjust to get some color “pop”. Like I said, it was an experiment. But one I like the results of! Maybe next I’ll try spinning it on the tripod…

This family came to my studio wanting outside, candid-style images. Time will tell if I was able to fulfill their needs, but this one photo really stood out to me as a great portrait for them, everyone caught in a relaxed, happy state. The site is outside of my studio- I have several potential outside spots for images such as this.

I love the bright, colorful image! Some photoshop playing, getting the dark eyes and hair was accomplished with a soft light layer on top of the image, and I took a swing through PhotoTools and got a slight diffused look to their skin (after Portraiture). Overall a cute image. I got a few candid ones too, I’ll probably post those later… I caught the whole family laughing and it was a great moment!

Portrait work done in and out of my studio, this was a client’s home shoot but I’m starting in studio shoots tomorrow and looking forward to it!

Lets pause a moment to celebrate… SPRING!!

Usually I desaturate my colors a bit. Todays pic isn’t saturated any more than what came out of the camera, but I did lots of post processing that added to the joyous color explosion seen above. Enjoy these glorious flowers in their prime.

BTW, I’m starting to add a light layer over my images more and more… this is using a layer of soft light in Photoshop at about 60%. It really does crazy, beautiful things to your photos. I’m glad I took a suggestion from one of the PhotoVision artists to try all of the light layers and learn what they can do… I also did a homemade vignette here for the first time, burning around the edges. Good/Bad/thoughts?

Another portrait from my studio! I think I really like this look, but I had some questions when I started finishing this image. I usually don’t go all the way to blown out whites (even here, although the whites are close, they aren’t overdone- according to my version of Lightroom and it’s controls, anyways). I’ve seen several child portraits lately, though, that had gone to blown out whites in sections of the image and they looked great. So I was deliberately trying to get there with this image. I love how the skin looks, as well… I started adding a “soft light” layer on top of the photo lately and it is a look that I really like. I doubt it will work for every image but I think I will be going for the dark, intense eyes and glowing skin as much as I can.

Anyways, I think this is just unbearably cute. In my mind, with child photography, you don’t have to get a smile with every image. I personally like the images without smiles 9 times out of 10… kids don’t know how to do a soft smile, usually, so they do the big crazy grins which ruin their eyes. Catching them in a laugh, though… that is quality. I’ll have an example of that soon. I feel like I get a lot more of a true look when the child is engaged, busy, thinking… and generally not smiling. But I also try to get a few smile images with every shoot, and sometimes those end up being my favorites of the session!

Love to hear what other photographers do when faced with photographing children. I’ve got lots of tricks up my sleeve for keeping a kid entertained, interested, and if necessary, smiling. But it’s always fun to hear how others approach the situation!

Catch this and other images on www.kelleybard.com, or check me out on flickr, facebook, twitter or buzztown (links for most are to the right).

Keep checking back, I’ll have a killer offer for my April deal, and it’s coming up in just a few days!

Enjoy.

I found this elk farm while driving around Hesperus, CO. It had the biggest males that I have ever seen, just off the side of the road. They spooked a bit when I came up to the fence, but didn’t move far from their food source, so I was able to get this image. I wanted to highlight the lovely, large valley behind the elk, so I’m glad that this photo shows that off well.

I’m not the worlds top wildlife photographer, but I do love to see these animals. If I can show them off at all, I’m happy. Part of living in this part of the US, for me, is being close to such amazing wild creatures (and even in an elk farm, they are glorious).

Tell me… is the post-processing too blah? I can’t decide, myself.

I liked the idea and the image, but in the original, the ladybug and the leaves were almost the same color (taken in Yosemite in early December). There was also some distracting elements- the leaves in the lower right corner were in focus, but which dragged the eye downward (I felt). So I played, experimenting. I think my weekend pictures will be more on this level from now on- I’ll still post fav images if I am really in the mood, but I’ll try to save the great ones for the week. That means, though, that I’ll have more experimental and fun ones on the weekends, and sometimes those get the most responses. So don’t walk away on the weekends… unless you have a life or something (unlike me).

Anyways, OnOne PhotoTools has been a good help lately, so I went there. I’m finding that I use that for blur and glow pics mostly, and I wanted to explore more filters. This photo got the antique color filter and the 81 warming filter. I also went back into Photoshop and Lightroom and blurred the area around the ladybug (masking rocks) and played with the ladybug’s coloring as well.

A fun experiment, for sure.

Enjoy my photography at www.kelleybard.com. This one isn’t there yet, but I depend on the comments of others to tell me what is good and what isn’t, so I factor in responses here, on facebook and on flickr to get ideas of what to post in the future.

**Speaking of future posts, I have a photo which I’ve been working on since November which I’m finally happy with- that will be my photo tomorrow. For Boulderites, it’s an image from one of your amazing local sites. Check back to see the image- hopefully stunning HDR (already submitted to hdrspotting.com as well). **

**The 2 images which I created for Japanese Earthquake support are on my site at www.kelleybard.com/donation. I have had many visits but not many purchases and I’d love comments on why you think that may be. I really hope to be able to help in this small way. I really, really like the idea of giving back, though, so I will be working to build relationships and add images monthly or so which will be “donation” images. Suggest some organizations and causes to me, I’ll be working with the companies to bring some knowledge and hopefully some financial support their way in the future.**

Below is a more sharpened version.

So… what do you think? We had this great, wet spring snowstorm this week. All of the snow melted quickly, but at 7:30 am my kid woke me and wanted to go play in the snow. I was grumpy until I saw how beautiful it was- then I grabbed my camera and split with her! We were wandering the streets around our house with snowpants over our pj’s, and I managed to snap 200+ pictures in about 15 minutes.

I’ll be showing more over the next week or so, but this one called to me. This is a single shot, with some OnOne conversions that really brought out the glow in the snow. The branches are normally a bright yellow (not sure what kind of tree) so I wanted to remove the colors as much as possible. I used one of the glow filters in PhotoTools and then the B&W IR conversion filter. I reduced that one to allow for some of the blue sky to come back, but really liked the result. So much that later on in Lightroom I took out the yellows and oranges to make it that much more striking. Perhaps someday I’ll set up an IR camera… it’s tempting, for sure!

The two versions are a softened and sharpened version. My vote is for the softened one, surprisingly. You don’t have to look far at my work to see that I like sharpened images a lot. But lately, doing the daily photo thing has caused me to definitely be more creative and more open to different looks and ideas.

Anyways, I would LOVE critiques and/or thoughts on which is a better image. I’ll have an HDR version of this out soon, too, as well as other shots from this glorious morning shoot.

Final Image

I liked this image but knew that it had some distracting elements and needed some oomph added. I don’t usually play with blur filters but I thought that a slight bit of zoom blur would be nice with this… so I applied that in Photoshop (after, I might add, removing some of the distracting blue tones in lightroom). I masked the blur off the blooms and then moved to OnOne PhotoTools, because I just didn’t think that Topaz Adjust had the look that I wanted. I do like a lot of what Topaz Adjust has to offer, but PhotoTools has so many filters that it’s just a completely different deal. Anyways, a few different filters added in brought out the slight glow and the bit of vignetting (another look I don’t usually do nowadays but it seemed good here). Back to Photoshop for a deep red filter (masked off the flowers again) and a trip through Topaz DeNoise to clean up the nasty noise… et voila!

I could have probably reproduced this look in Photoshop. But it was fun to find and use the filters in PhotoTools, and it comes out great… better than my fumbling fingers sometimes. I still haven’t tried to figure out the masking deal in PhotoTools, once I have that understood it will be a much more valuable tool (in my opinion). But even without that it’s still pretty damn nice to have.

I think it’s an improvement… maybe not the best flower pic in the world but one that makes me happier now. And right now I’m all about Spring, so any spring flowers will make me smile big!

I’ll put this plus other OnOne created images together soon in a comprehensive review.

I have a big chunk of work at www.kelleybard.com, and here and on facebook and flickr. I’ll be posting my monthly deal this week in one or all of those places, it’s usually a good deal for someone, maybe for you this time! Come back and check it out.

Enjoy!

Here is the original image, taken last year (a bit later in the year, but the idea of spring is making my mouth water I’m so hungry for it!):

I like the spring-like colors, but the touch of yellow was distracting and I didn’t want to toss the whole thing just due to the burnt out section on the main flower, so I went into Photoshop and OnOne PhotoTools and created this:

I really, really liked the dreamy look and glow to it, as that is exactly how I feel about Spring right now- very dreamy and hoping. I added a few glow type filters in PhotoTools, plus one (called Deep Forest, I think) that deepened the green and made it more of a blue tone. I removed the yellow in photoshop and played with the curves to get the blacks just on the edge of black, and the rest of the image staying darkish except for the glow on the flowers.

To me, this is an improvement. I’m not sure if I could have figured out a way to do this just in Photoshop, but it was a delight to have the PhotoTools option available. It makes it so much easier and can get me the exact look I want. Also, I saw last night that I could make some filters “favorites”, which should make it much easier for me to find a specific look for an image (that was one of my main complaints/concerns about PhotoTools, that there are just too many filters to find what you want). I need to figure out if I can do masking there without a Wacom tablet… that is another problem but I’ll let you know if I’ve figured it out!

This is posted to www.kelleybard.com, my website. I also have photos posted to flickr and facebook (links are on this home page). Enjoy and have fun with my work!

I have wanted to finish this one for a while, but just didn’t know which route to take in processing it. I finally went fairly simply, and added a little glow and a little diffusion courtesy of OnOne PhotoTools… I didn’t even have to mask anything in the end, I just let the image speak for itself.

Since I haven’t had it in me to put together a full review yet of OnOne PhotoTools Pro 2.6, I’ve decided to post images as I do them, explain why I used OnOne there, and then do a “pulling together” review sometime soon.

First off, I chose this flower to photograph because I love Star Lilies. I decided to try (sorta spur of the moment) some backlighting, as I haven’t done that yet with any shots. Once I feel comfy with flowers, I hope, I will be diving into photographing people with various light setups. But first first, right? So I lit this from underneath/camera left, with another light on the background. Then the fun came (although, to be honest, the lighting is pretty fun for me!).

I edited this in Photoshop and Lightroom, and used PhotoTools extensively. I increased the exposure a lot in Lightroom, and really enjoyed the recovery slider there, as I had some blown-out spots on every image. Sigh. But this was a single image, and I got to Photoshop pretty quickly. I went into OnOne PhotoTools almost immediately- I think I messed with the pollen color a bit (that was a major frustration for me, but I think this worked out ok). In PhotoTools I really wanted to highlight the glow through the petals, and there are several filters that worked well for that. ChargeMoreMoneyGlow was one, and I used another but VERY lightly as it “glowed out” everything. I think I returned to Photoshop and played with the brightness and contrast until I felt like I had finished in Photoshop… once I finished there, I took it back to Lightroom and played with the saturation of the colors, finishing with this image that I’m happy with.

I think it’s obvious that I’m happy with PhotoTools, I keep using it with images and only once or twice have I not been happy with my results. The only problem, if you can call it that, would be that there are so, so many filters, and you get only a vague idea what they do from the sample pics shown… you really have to apply it to see how it will affect your image. I’m going to have to keep a list of favs and what they can do, I think. But being overwhelmed by choices in a cheap (well, cheapish) photo manipulation software is a good problem to have.

See more of my images at http://www.kelleybard.com, or my flickr or facebook pages.

*Reminder- if you go to view my images, check the visitor count, as it is creeping closer to 1000! If you are #1000, leave a quick comment so I can reach you later for your free print, ok?*

I really like texturing images, but tend to keep them really light, almost undistinguishable (is that really a word? Really?) from the original image except for a tinge of texture, detail or color. I guess in most photography that is my aim, to make small changes that add up to much better images in the long run.

This image certainly doesn’t have the amt of texture that I’ve seen on some, but it’s heavier than most of my images. I keep the texture away from the grasses- and didn’t the HDR make that grass come out AMAZING??- and concentrated on the sky and water. I also used a texture I don’t usually use, one of the Stuck In Customs 25 texture pack… this one created the “scratchy” look on this print. Let me clarify, though… when I use textures, I almost always use some of the Stuck In Customs textures. They are great. But I often use the more mellow ones, the wall texture types. Not ones that are radically detailed and different… but it worked here, so I’m not complaining!

This was a shot that I took and wanted to finish months ago. I am glad that I finally got an HDR version that I liked (redid it several times with different settings) and textures and a look that I love.

One of my lighting tests… I love this color of Calla Lily, though. I don’t often leave my photos without a bit of white in there to give balance… this one is all dark and mid tones, though, and I like it just fine that way! I am going to be shooting a wedding with these colors this summer, and I can’t wait. Photoshop, with a touch of OnOne PhotoTools (and I’ll work on that review in the early part of next week), where I used a filter that gave just a touch more contrast and detail to the flower. Enjoy this piece of beauty!

Coming up tomorrow, I have a well-textured image of the sound between the Outer Banks and the Mainland… I’ve always liked this image and I finally finished it last night, so you guys will be the first to view it!

To start with, I live in the country. Not way out, I live close enough to a city to ALMOST satisfy my city needs, but there are plenny folk around me who are way, way into their country-ness and are fine with it. It’s new, I can deal with it… and I’m finding ways to enjoy the unique views of life you get out here, too!

This is one of those “enjoy” moments. A few miles away is a big elk farm. The males are HUGE but are often kept far from the road… and it’s $$$ to visit/hunt (I haven’t had the guts to ask about photographing yet). So I stand outside the fence. On this day, the cows were gathered near the road, eating hay. This one became interested/gutsy and came over for a close view of what me and my kids were doing, staring at them. She got close enough to lick my camera (I dodged, at the last second). The image was neat, unexpected, but not very exciting for all of that… I thought. But in processing, I went into my new PhotoTools (yes, I bought it; no, I didn’t do a review yet; yes, I will… I think I have about 5 different imgs to add to it now) and added some filters on a whim. I ended up with this bleach/bypassy look, which I enhanced further in photoshop and lightroom, a look which started to give me a distinct sad feeling to the image. Here is this wild thing, trapped in captivity, watching the sun set and people ogle her through the fence… I enhanced the blue tone and the blues in the sky and tried to bring as much of that feeling into the image as possible.

Then came the question- to crop or not? I ended up trying it out and I would LOVE your critique/thoughts on it. The crop aligns the eye and the sun with the exact “lines” that I use when trying to focus the viewers attention on a certain spot (I use the golden rule, which is close to the rule of thirds… an idea stolen/given? from Trey Ratcliff of Stuck In Customs in his ebook “Composing the Photo”). I think it makes it a better photo… but I’m not sure if it conveys the same sadness or even the same animal-ness… it might be too much of a crop to be able to tell it’s an elk, for example. What do you think?

Still, I posted it away, hoping to get some feedback- from my website http://www.kelleybard.com, from flickr, from facebook… It will be interesting to see what I hear from you all. Enjoy my work and have a great weekend!

I think, after my steampunk balloon photo, I’m trying to push the fantasy look of my photos a bit. So this is Lower Yosemite Falls, Idealized in my mind, for all eternity. The original pic wasn’t quite so perfect… not far from the final image, but more blah, less great water (in all honesty, I wish I could be one of those photographers who could make total fantasy creations in Photoshop- either I’m not creative enough, or just not computer/Photoshop savvy enough, but I wouldn’t even know where to start!). I always liked this pic, though, so I wanted to finish it. Photoshop and Topaz Adjust cleaned up the foggy look a bit, and sharpened it up. I turned it black and white, which made it better, but still not perfect… I went into OnOne PhotoTools and finally got the right mix, ghosting and glowing the water a bit, while still getting the sharpness of the rocks and the details. I finished with Lightroom and made the sepia look… which worked in my mind as I saw this as sorta ideal, possibly in the past Yosemite Falls.

Besides talking about this pic, I wanted to thank you all, again, for another max day yesterday! I think it was that steampunk balloon image that caught someone’s attention… I try to notice that and it’s good for me to see what works for people and what doesn’t, so keep commenting and visiting pics and such, please!

This, along with my other fav pics and (most importantly) YOUR fav pics, is posted to www.kelleybard.com. I’ve also got it on flickr and facebook. Hopefully I’ll get some more feedback on this in one or all places, so I can see what YOU think of it. Comments are loved, always. And keep visiting!

Enjoy.

**Event- Grand Opening of The Red Tent, a womens healing center in Durango, CO**

Monday, Valentines Day from 5-7 is the grand opening of The Red Tent. I spent a good amount of today there, putting my pics on the walls. I’ll be one of the featured artists for the next 2 months there. I’ve got 3 framed images (one a 30×40 frame and 20×30 print, it’s HUGE!) and a canvas wrap coming (another first). I hope to get lots and lots of maternity and infant work out of this, it will be a fun place to be associated with! Check out www.redtentwellness.com for information. And maybe… see you there!

Well, I have an excuse for not getting any decent photos this weekend, but it’s still no excuse.
I have been rather busy this weekend and had plans on shooting the wife’s tattoos with some close up experimentals, but alas it did not happen.

But I did step out of the house to shoot a shot towards downtown San Diego and then messed around with it in PhotoTools. I always feel like I’m cheating when I use PhotoTools and especially in this shot, where I knew I did not really HAVE a shot but needed something to post up.
But at the end of it all, I actually quite like this shot as it reminds me of photos I used to see of California while living back in South Africa, with the palm trees, the white fences, and being jealous that I was not there!
For now, it’s a nice little reminder of my life here in San Diego…for who knows, I could be moving on sooner than later. Here’s to you San Diego!

You know how it is. You give someone your number, and… Inspired by a recent Brian Matiash webi

You know how it is. You give someone your number, and…

Inspired by a recent Brian Matiash webinar, I used onOne Phototools to grunge this scene up a bit, only to realize that it was pretty darned grungy to start with.

This old telephone — and one only slightly newer — can be found at Peter Limmer & Sons, Bootmakers, in Intervale, New Hampshire. The shop is a a curious and eclectic sort of place… just perfect for HDR. They do make a great boot, and I’m happy that Peter let me get a pair as well as grab some brackets.

(If you haven’t seen the HDR of the homeless Limmers in my photostream, visit Consigned )

The phone looks cool when viewed Extra Large, so please click on the image above to see it Extra Large in a new window.

This image was derived from a set of eleven exposures taken with the Promote Control. This worked out well, as the lighting was very dim in the shop. I merged and tonemapped them using Photomatix Pro 4, settling on settings that Matiash had suggested in his recent “Grunge” seminar.

I used several different filter effects from onOne Phototools to set up the grunge look, as well as the slightly blue cast in the windows. Following that with NIK Color Efex Pro Darken/Lighten Center (one of my favorites) and then a little dark vignetting seemed to work well. Last thing was to block out the phone number that had been written on the shelf. I was going to put in 867-5309, but does anyone really remember that song anymore?
