I tried joining the site Hermit's Slate @ Hermitary.Com two times in the past couple months; my registrations were not confirmed.

I am not exactly certain as to why my registrations were not confirmed, but the only thing I can think of is that staff are getting me mixed up with a previously banned member. I'd really like to join up to the site as it looks like an interesting place.

I read and followed this off the main page, so I don't understand why they are not confirming my account:

"To distinguish you from a spammer, fill in some information for Location, Occupation, Interests — at least Interests, which is the least revealing if that is an issue. I need to have something tangible to recognize you as genuinely interested in this forum and not just spamming. "

Hermit's Slate seems like an interesting place; I hope to eventually make it in there, but until then, I'll stick to using my own forum HikiCulture (well, I'd still be using HikiCulture even if I was in Hermit's Slate – I'd just be using the two in conjunction).

Sa discutam putin despre tehnologiile folosite in dezvoltarea site-ului.

In primul rand, aveam doua alternative: crearea unui (mini)framework propriu sau folosirea unuia dedicat. Cum crearea unui framework de la zero nu face scopul acestui proiect, am ales cea de-a doua varianta.

Ne-am oprit la Joomla, un CMS open-source matur, orientat spre crearea de comunitati online (spre deosebire de WordPress care este mai potrivit blogurilor). Existenta unui numar mare de plugin-uri, templateuri si extensii usureaza adaugarea/modificarea functionalitatilor si permite concentrarea pe continutul site-ului. Pe masura ce dezvoltarea site-ului evolueaza, vom reveni cu pareri si impresii despre utilizarea acestui framework. Pana acum lucrurile au mers bine, in special din cauza documentatiei detaliate si a forumurilor dedicate. Codul in schimb pare destul de incalcit, cu toate ca nu am apucat sa facem decat modificari minore.

Joomla! foloseste PHP ca limbaj de scripting server-side si MySQL pentru baza de date. In rest CSS, JavaScript, XML, etc. – it’s all there.

Pentru sectiunea de forum, am optat pentru phpBB, datorita integrarii facile cu Joomla.

Momentan site-ul este in dezvoltare, deci multe sectiuni sunt dummy, functionalitati noi vor fi adaugate si elementele de design modificate.

TODO:

• logo/header – de inlocuit cu o varianta mai decenta [ rezolvat ]
• eliminarea “feelingului” de blog
• adaugarea de continut [in lucru]

Performing a Google search for the extremely common word ‘reclusive’ makes the HikiCulture discussion boards appear right near the top of the first page of search results. This is great news, but it is also somewhat scary considering that anyone performing a search for that term, be it family members or friends, could come across the site! My family/friends already know that I’m a reclusive Aspergian, but they’d perhaps wonder why the hell I started a website on the topic.

In the future, I plan to host HikiCulture (or a similar site) on my very own servers. This will give me more freedom; it will allow me to install lots of modifications and basically do whatever I please (as far as forum-administration goes). I’m not sure if I will use phpBB forum-software or switch to something else, but at the present, phpBB is likely the best open-source forum software available. vBulletin is, to some, on par with phpBB, but there’s one massive flaw with it – it’s ugly as hell. I usually don’t care much about aesthetics when it comes to most things, especially computer-related, but vBulletin is an exception here. Powerful it is —- pretty it is not.

I never imagined that the site would get so many users so quickly. At first the site was somewhat of a ‘experiment’ of mine to see how successful it would become, but it’s getting big enough that it would actually be worth-while to host the forum on my own servers. When and if I run the forums off my own servers, I don’t know.

En nuestra página dedicada a Aion: www.aion-fansite.com , estamos teniendo un problema con el spam en los foros. Pues bueno os voy a contar la solución que hemos implementado:

1. Banear las Ips de los spammers (pobre resultado, ya que sueles ser Bots o máquinas, las que se dedican a ello de forma automática y cambian las ips).
2. La mejor forma de evitar los Bots, es poner un gráfico con un texto, el cual tiene que ser repetido en su correspondiente campo. A esta técnica se le llama Captcha.
3. No encuentro ningún mod que sirva para tal efecto y decido crearlo manualmente.
4. En  http://blog.unijimpe.net/captcha-con-php-y-jpgraph/ , encuentro un excelente artículo, en donde explica como implementar un sistema Captcha propio, usando php. Pues basándome en este artículo realizo mis propias modificaciones en php nuke. Visitar el enlace y descargar los ejemplos.
   • Dentro de la carpeta: \html\modules\Your_Account\  de Php Nuke, vamos a copiar el fichero captcha.php  y la biblioteca JpGraph, en la carpeta Inc .
   • Luego hay que  modificar el fichero index.php: buscar en este fichero la función: confirmNewUser e incluir estas líneas:

Now on another note: I have done a little study for myself, since there has been a lot of fuzz about the weakness of phpBB, and sadly i must confirm that, using the right tools, almost every phpBB version is SQL injectable, even the newer ones.

For this study, i randomly selected and tested different forums, different version, and i have found atleast 1 or more entry points in about 80% of all versions. I used the tools mini mySQLat0r and SQLmap, along with a handy tool I like to refer to as my brains (cough cough).

Anyone who would be determined to get in phpBB, gets in.

Well, many people out there find it hard and struggle to get their forums going. This leads to fustration and the closing of the forum, eventhough knowbody had even heard of it. Or.. very little. The aim is to stick at it. I know it gets you down, but you really do have to keep at it. People that create a forum sometimes expect it to get highly populated within the first couple of weeks to a month. This is not the case. Some popular forums take years to get the amount of views they have. Some warez forums for example. These are great forums mind you and get many users anyway, just for what they are. But they have to stick at it to get there 200,000 to 500,000 visitors a day. I mean i get an average of around 20-30 people on my blog. I still keep going, as one day my blog could get bigger and bigger, money could be made and so on.

So, you are here for a small trick? Well, if you are a webmaster, and are trying to get a forum going here it is.

You will need:

- Hosting, of course. Free or paid. Many people do tend to prefer paid though.
- A forum software. VBulletin, myBB, PHPBB, IPB, SMF etc etc and so forth. There are more!
- Once installed, turn off acitivation by email. You will see why later on.

Now to get started. In some forum softwares, you can just keep adding users thought the admin panel. If you have this choice. Add around 10 new users. Have each username with the same password. But keep the usernames no way in related to eachother. This then makes them look legit. Either get your friends to help you, or you do it yourself. This is time consuming i must say, but once your done and started getting menbers rolling in you wont be complaining. On the other hand, those who do not have the option to add users through the admin panel, you will have to do it manually by registering each user. (Now you see why i told you to turn off activation by email.).

Once you have done this, create a few new topics with that username. Change username, and do the same.
If you create around 4 threads per topic per username. Thats 4 x 10 in one topic. Which is 40. Then x that by however many topics you have. It is ideal to start with only a few topics at the beginning. Else you will be here all day. Create main topics such as. (If its a warez forum).

- Music
- Videos
- Ebooks

Now, you have used each username to post around 4 new threads in each topic. Like i said before, 40 in each. 4 topics. 40×4=160. Thats 160 posts all together so far. From those 10(fake) users.

Now you just need log in to a username, and comment on random ones. Don’t comment on a thread that was made by the same username of course. So if a topic was in appz, called mIRC cracked download by Jim. Go to one say, called, Milner and comment something simple, like Thankyou for this download. Been looking for it!
Do this once again with each 10 users (so make a conversation between those 10 fake users). This then makes the new comers, who then register think, wow this forum is popular (or active) and register. They then join in, tell their friends. More people also come from google etc.
If you get 5 new comers. They tell 5 of their friends each. Then you get 25 new comers. Those 25 people tell 5 friends each. Yeah.. you get the idea .

That is pretty much the basic way of (making) people think you forum is active. Making them want to join in.

Okay, one more simple say and them im out of here. My fingers ake .

This one is easier, say you have or are trying to make a programming forum. The best thing to do is offer new programs. A program that would normally cost. Or something. Say.. even something like a universal keygen for as many apps as you can do it for. Or maybe get an irc channel and start doing lectures. Ram pack your forums with brand new articles, source code etc and people will just not resist temptation to join and read more. Give them something to look forward too .

L’esperienza con Obsidian Portal è stata breve ed infelice. Lasciamo stare che la feature piu importante del sito – quella di poter raccogliere giocatori per le proprie sessioni – non mi serve a nulla (e anche se mi servisse, non sarebbe molto efficace visto che buona parte dei giocatori risiedono in USA!). Lasciamo stare la grafica orrenda e dispersiva. Lasciamo anche stare sia il forum che la possibilità di inserire piu mappe siano a pagamento. Ci sono comunque troppi problemi e sbavature in quel sito che vanno largamente a superare i vantaggi che se ne potrebbero trarre. La comodità di avere una sezione solo per il DM su qualsiasi testo (sia esso parte della wiki, del blog o statico) è unica e favolosa, e solo per quello non ho cancellato l’account dopo 24 ore. Il motore della wiki però è davvero penoso, non ti da neppure la possibilità di caricare foto nei post… wikidot e wikia gli danno 1000:0. Il continuo migioramento di WordPress fa sentire ancora piu pesantemente le limitazioni del motore del blog… insomma alla fine ho detto basta.

Salvo dimenticanze, questo dovrebbe essere tutto! E’ sicuramente piu dispersivo di Obsidian Portal ma almeno ogni componente è funzionale e gratuito.

The past week hasn’t been the best- and that’s an understatement.  The pressure of wanting to finish our project near the end of the week was hard on me and the collegues in the Web Department, and the customer kept on making requests for changes on the go.  On top of that, I lost four hours because the idiots behind Small Machines Forums at some point decided it was a good idea to “point toward an absolute path” on a server in their configuration file.  While other technologies like Joomla, PHPBB, Drupal, Magento… you name it only need the relative path to the folder they’re installed in; or the URL path.

I didn’t only develop a strong dislike towards the SMF technology, I also developed two headaches.  One on “racket ball” day so I had to pass.  Leading to my mates being down to only 4 players.  And me feeling guilty and stressed about that afterwards.

I’d lie if I said that today was much better.  I got up, and spent nearly 3 hours on a 10-minute speech i’m holding on wednesday.  I’m not a “natural” so I need to work everything out in detail, to give the impression that I am not just reading everything from a paper.  Afterwards I went shopping, and for some reason that depressed me.  Don’t know why, there was no real reason as I found everything I needed.  I guess I just hate Autumn ?

After that, I spent some more time on that speak.  I finished it, though, and feel pretty good about it.  After that, it’s all a blur.  I should have written some reviews for my gaming blog, but couldn’t find the motivation.  Better luck next time, I guess.
