The business of nutrition is to build better tissue. Compromised physiology is a basic aspect of human performance that most athletes, coaches and trainers fail to effectively address. Incremental gains in human performance come to those with an attention to detail and an acknowledgement of the tried and proven science. Fueling for performance is very different from fueling for protection. The paradox is athletes must do both. Solving this nutritional dilemma:

Maximizes and sustain energy output (protects mitochondrial density)

Reduces oxidative stress

Elevates immune system strength

Improves recovery and repair

Reduces inflammation

Improves cardio-vascular performance

We as Americans spend a great deal of time and money trying to keep our human body physically fit and attractive. Millions of dollars are spent on health foods, exercise equipment and spas, beauty products and medical supplies and treatment. While this may enable us to maintain better health and quality of life for a longer period of time, body cells will continue to die, the body will age and degenerate over time and there is really nothing we can do to prevent its ultimate demise. The house in which the earthly body lives is only temporary. If we believe we need not be discouraged, for we know that when we leave this earthly home behind we will have a home in Heaven which is eternal…John 14:2-3 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, so that where I am, you may be also. Maybe we should make a greater effort to build up our spiritual bodies for eternity..

Researchers have found another reason to eat well: a healthy diet helps prevent kidney stones. Loadi

Researchers have found another reason to eat well: a healthy diet helps prevent kidney stones. Loading up on fruits, vegetables, nuts, low-fat dairy products, and whole grains, while limiting salt, red and processed meats, and sweetened beverages is an effective way to ward off kidney stones, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society Nephrology (JASN). Because kidney stones are linked to higher rates of hypertension, diabetes, increased body weight, and other risk factors for heart disease, the findings have considerable health implications.

Eric Taylor, MD (Maine Medical Center) and his colleagues at Brigham and Women’s Hospital conducted a large study to determine the effects of healthy eating habits on the formation of kidney stones. The investigators collected information from individuals enrolled in three clinical studies: the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (45,821 men followed for 18 years), the Nurses’ Health Study I (94,108 older women followed for 18 years), and the Nurses’ Health Study II (101,837 younger women followed for 14 years).

Dr. Taylor’s team assigned a score to each participant based on eight components of a DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) style diet: high intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes, low-fat dairy products, and whole grains and low intake of salt, sweetened beverages, and red and processed meats. Individuals with higher DASH scores consumed diets that were higher in calcium, potassium, magnesium, oxalate, and vitamin C and lower in sodium.

A total of 5,645 incident kidney stones developed in the participants in the three studies. In each study, participants with the highest DASH scores were between 40% and 45% less likely to develop kidney stones than participants with the lowest DASH scores. The reductions in kidney stone risk were independent of age, body size, fluid intake, and other factors.

Because a DASH-style diet may affect the development of hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic diseases associated with kidney stones, the researchers also performed an analysis limited to study participants without hypertension or diabetes. Even among those individuals the DASH diet reduced the risk of kidney stones.

Many of the medications used to treat kidney stones have unpleasant side effects. This study indicates that adopting a DASH-style diet may be an effective alternative.

The authors report no financial disclosures. Study co-authors include Teresa Fung (Simmons College) and Gary Curhan, MD (Brigham and Women’s Hospital).

The article, entitled “DASH-Style Diet Associates with Reduced Risk for Kidney Stones,” appeared online at http://jasn.asnjournals.org/ on August 13, 2009, doi 10.1681/ASN.2009030276.

Before embarking on anything, we often ask ourselves the obvious – do we have what it takes? J

Before embarking on anything, we often ask ourselves the obvious – do we have what it takes?

Just the same, if we want to be self-employed or we wish to start a small business, we must first know what it takes to start one. In short, we must plan. We cannot leave fate to chance, and hope we succeed. We must always be prepared to create our own employment.

I will never stop advocating this and I will continue to write about it off and on in this blog – Retirement Redefined – pursuing a second career of our choice.

Now, let’s say you’ve always wanted to start your own business, start by asking yourself these questions:

Are you mentally prepared and physically fit?

Are you financially prepared?

Can you run the business?

Do you have the support of your close ones?

These are very short but very important questions. And I will run through each of them with you.

1. Are you mentally prepared and physically fit?

Many people think they are mentally prepared and especially physically fit. But let’s do a quick test by asking ourselves the following questions:

Are you hungry for success?

Are you a persistent person – the never-say-die type?

Can you take failure in your stride and come back fighting again?

Are you a disciplined person? When you say you will do something, will you do it?

Do you believe that success comes from hard work and that there is no shortcut to it?

Are you physically fit for the hard work expected?

Are you prepared to work twice as hard as others are doing?

Can you work under pressure and yet enjoy your work?

Are you willing to make short-term sacrifices for long-term gains?

Can you take criticisms and accept advice from others?

Are you a “thick-skinned” person – gutsy, not afraid to do something which others may think is below your status to do?

Many years ago, an ex-colleague from the bank was feeling extremely depressed. She was having some family problems and decided to quit her job. She felt she could not contribute positively at work.

When she finally decided to get back into the workforce, she could not find anything suitable. She came by my office and we explored some options together. She finally settled with the idea of starting a premium gift business.

It took her a while to prepare. She did lots of research, attended trade fairs, worked hard, sacrificed long hours and was extremely focused. Today, commitment, effort and preparedness have bode well for her – her business has expanded to include distribution of a range of products and she owns two retail outlets.

Her success factor? She was mentally and physically prepared for the business she was getting herself into.

In my lifetime, I have met many people. One of them was a talented but frustrated professional. We chatted and explored her interests together. We looked into her network and she finally decided to start a hamper business.

She started off marketing and distributing hampers for all occasions. Her business quickly became profitable but after two years, she opted out. The work was too hard for her.

Basically, she was not prepared physically nor mentally to run her hamper business. The lifestyle was tough and she could not grasp the workings of the business. This friend returned to regular employment and is now very happy.

Now, let’s go back to the question at hand: Are you mentally prepared and physically fit? If you hesitate to answer any of the questions above, I strongly recommend you sit back and reconsider your decision. I’m not saying you can’t start your own business. Just maybe, the timing isn’t right yet. So start working on being mentally prepared NOW.

Or maybe, you need to follow through my blog a while longer and ask me any questions you may have about your decision. My email address is retireesblog@gmail.com. I am always excited to hear from you!

Good day.

Everyone Knows Why Physical Fitness is Important but Why is Defining Physical Fitness Important ? I

Everyone Knows Why Physical Fitness is Important but Why is Defining Physical Fitness Important ?

I was going along creating new content pages for AskTheTrainer.com when I came upon a roadblock. The page was titled the definition of physical fitness. At first glance it would seem the the definition of physical fitness is obvious but it was very difficult to define properly.

I asked fellow personal trainers on internet forums and even a professional group on yahoo which is filled with college students and PhDs. I received some interesting responses from different angles but none satisfied me.

Many people tried to break down the definition of physical fitness using aspects of human performance. One PhD and motivational speaker simply said, “The Power to Do” which I thought was very uninspiring.

The reason I found this so difficult is simply because its important!

Every day people search for definition of phsyical fitness almost 400 times online. With the obesity epidemic and many people who live sedentary lifestyles search for a definition of physical fitness, a good definition may help them understand what they have to do to turn their sedentary life around.

The way I tried to define it was looking at the human being as just another organism. Like Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, the bottom of the pyramid is the most basic physical fitness needs which are the needs to be well and be able to perform the ordinary daily tasks and occaisonally a new task.

The second level of the hierarchy I made for specific adptations to occur for the 5 components of fitness, flexibility, muscular strength & endurance, cardiovascular endurance and body composition. I also made sure to mention maintaining the state of well being while adapting to the environment.

The final level like Maslow’s Self Actualization is reached by very few. Reaching the peak of an individual’s athletic potential is accomplished by few and few even strive to reach such an accomplishment.

If I had to define Physical Fitness in One Sentence it would be as Follows

“The human beings physical ability to thrive in any environment.”

I may add something to make sure the reader would know that the human could place themselves into the environment or the environment could adapt itself.

I am also looking for other people to add their input with their definition of phsycial fitness so I can add it to my page and quote them.

Exercise had little value growing up in a Pentecostal church. In fact, the Bible clearly said it “profiteth little” they preached. Instead, spiritual matters were of importance not the body. Such belief was based on the scripture from the King James Version of the Bible which said, “bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things” (1 Timothy 4:8). Though there was some truth to their belief, it was not entirely so. They had failed to comprehend the English language fully, for the scripture did not say exercise was meaningless but rather in terms of benefit the spiritual by far outweighed the physical. As spiritual beings we are stuck in a physical body. And today some of us have stretched our birth suits to proportions of great size or simply neglected them. Being good stewards, however, involves caring for our bodies also. Understanding that the two worlds, physical and spiritual, parallel each other is to begin to recognize the degree of fitness required to exist in both.

Here are three ways to be fit and healthy both physically and spiritually:

1. Cardio:

It is important to exercise daily. The heart is a muscle that requires aerobic type of exercises. No or little exercise can result in cardiovascular diseases and obesity.

Spiritual Parallel: Prayer

No or little prayer will result in worldly obesity or an impure heart. We have been called to be distinct from the world in our desires, motives, and outlook of life: “But you are chosen people, royal priests, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession” (I Peter 2:9 NCV). Jesus said of His followers, “They don’t belong to the world, just as I don’t belong to the world” (John 17:16 NCV).

This type of spiritual exercise must be done daily in order to accomplish spiritual fitness.

What exercise is to the body is what prayer is to the spirit being.

2.Weight bearing exercises:

The body has two main energy systems: aerobic and anaerobic. Whereas the efficiency of the aerobic system is affiliated with the heart, the anaerobic system is connected with the muscles, especially in activities such as weight training. Resistant training should be an integral part of our life. After the age of 25, we lose more than one-half pound of muscle every year. Imagine a house. Your body is like a house. Weight training helps to sustain the structure.

Spiritual Parallel: Adversity/ Hardship/ Struggles

Adversity builds spiritual muscle. The spiritual muscle that is built is called character: “We also have joy with our troubles, because we know that these troubles produce patience. And patience produces character, and character produces hope” (Romans 5:3-4 NCV).

Adversity, then, is a stepping-stone to a higher level. It is progress in the making. But so many times this is not our outlook. We do not see the pressures in life or the weights we must bear in life as means of refining us in order to become better individuals. If we do not learn to confront the struggles in life by applying the Word of God and see them as opportunities to become stronger, we become flabby Christians.

Adversity the opportunity to discover the greatness within.

3.Stretching:

Stretching is a necessary component of fitness. It increases physical efficiency and performance. It improves muscular balance and postural awareness.

Spiritual Parallel: Faith

When we are challenged in life, our faith is also. We are stretched to surpass our present condition. God stretches us when we allow Him to dream through us. If we are able to accomplish a task all by ourselves, our faith is not stretched. Our faith is stretched when we look to God to achieve the dreams He births in us: With God’s power working in us, God can do much, much more than anything we can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20 NCV).

Dare to allow God to dream through you.

Health is wealth. By being physically fit, it can make a person look lean both inside and out.

There is a lot a person can do such jogging or walking in the morning, playing basketball or any other sport with friends but if a person wants to have muscles and look lean, the best thing to do will be to sign up and workout in a gym.

Just like taking any medicine, one should first consult the doctor before undergoing any form of exercise.

Physical exercise is beneficial because it helps maintain and improve ones health from a variety of diseases and premature death. It also makes a person feel happier and increases ones self esteem preventing one from falling into depression or anxiety. It has also shown to make a person with an active lifestyle live longer than a person who doesn’t.

The best exercise plan should have cardiovascular and weight training exercises. This helps burn calories and increase the muscle to fat ratio that will increase ones metabolism and make one either gain or lose weight.

A person who has never worked out before should do it gradually. Doing it too much for the first time can make one pull a muscle or have an injury making it worse. Endurance will never be built in a day and doing it repeatedly will surely be good to the person.

Focusing on certain portion in the body can help make it improve. A good example is going to the gym and doing a workout more often in a specific area such as the abs can give one a chest pack.

But beauty is not only about having muscles which is what people can see. It is also about enhancing the beauty within.

Here are some things one can do everyday to stay beautiful and healthy;

Reading books and other reading material more often keeps the mind sharp just like working out keeps the body in shape.

Work no matter what kind it is produces stress. One can reduce this by taking the time out to do something special like lying in a hot tub, shopping or watching a movie. Studies have shown it is reliever and helps one from looking haggardly.

Pollution is something people cannot control given the size of the problem. When one goes out, it is best to put some form of protection such as beauty products that contain antioxidants that protect the skin from damage. There are also other beauty products available and choosing the right one with the help of a dermatologist can help the person.

Another way to stay healthy is to give up some vices. Most people smoke and drink. Smoking has been proven to cause lung cancer and other diseases as well complications for women giving birth. Excessive drinking has also shown to do the same.

For people who don’t smoke, it is best to stay away from people who do since studies have shown that nonsmokers are also at risk of developing cancer due to secondary smoke inhalation.

Lastly, it is best to always start the day with a positive outlook. Just as studies have shown that exercise makes a person feel happier, smiling produces the same effect. A smile can do a lot and it is contagious in a positive sense. It brightens the day of not only one but others as well.

Talk Test According to ACE (American Council on Exercise), a client should be able to have a comfort

Talk Test

According to ACE (American Council on Exercise), a client should be able to have a comfortable conversation while exercising. If you can pray aloud and do cardio on a machine simultaneously without hyperventilating, then you are working out at the correct comfort level. Try to do this test only at home rather than in a gym full of people. Of course, you could put a blue tooth on and they’ll just think you’re one of those people talking on the phone, looking crazy.

Delt Test

Believe it or not, these muscles are extremely important in the act of worship. If you want to test the strength of these beautiful muscles, extend your hands openly towards the sky. If you fatigue within five minutes, I recommend shoulder presses, front delt raises, side laterals, and rear delt flys in order to condition these muscles. You may need to put some muscle into your worship. No weak, flabby praises.

Focus Test

Have you ever tried praying only to find your thoughts scattered everywhere, worrying about the next thing on your “to do” list or what happened yesterday? Next time practice a focus exercise by using a lit candle and staring directly at the flame as you pray.

Retention Test

Now a day, even the young forget. Is it that the rate of Alzheimer’s disease is increasing? Well, keep that memory sharp by memorizing a scripture every week. Stick it on the refrigerator, write it on the mirror with a transparency pen, of course, and repeat it allowed. Psalm 139: 14 works well here: I am fearfully and wonderfully made. If you don’t say it, who will?

Sleep Test

Do you have problems falling asleep at night? Do you have problems staying asleep at night? Then seek medical help and find scriptures on peace to meditate on. Or just buy a new mattress.
