According to me it’s a really easypeasy operating system to use that does everything from the first time you boot it up. The Wireless connection is ready for you, the Function Keys work (most of them, I couldn’t actually switch off the wireless). Out on the internet and Flash websites work, MP3’s play it all “just works”.

Of course it’s not actually FREE as in FREEDOM but if you can live with that and need to be up and running on your eeePC fast it’s definitely worth a look.

I realized with disgust that, having written a post about photography, I was more obligated than ever to find a picture to attach to this post. This is a totally random shot I got from the PayPal X Innovate conference, currently available on my Flickr account.

I take pictures. Normally, I process them, and stash them away on hard drives, only to post a few select shots some weeks later. But lately people have been wanting me to take pictures and put them up for public viewing post haste. Facebook is utterly unmentionable, that goes without saying; butchering photos with a sickening amount of compression and resizing to 614px on the long side. I have a Flickr account (it feels way cleaner and more respectable than DeviantArt), but I really dislike Flickr’s interface when it comes to sets (and the “All Sizes”/sizing thing is horrid). SmugMug is better but still not that good for my purposes. Flickr has a nice community and clean, if not very usable, interface. I just feel bad using it for an all-purpose photodump.

So I’ve been thinking about starting to use Picasa Web as my photodump for large sets of images. To me, Picasa feels pretty amateur, but at least others can easily navigate forward/backward, zoom-in, do other NORMAL things. I have frequently had to show others how to do this stuff with Flickr. What solutions have you all found? Anyone else run into the angst of diluting their portfolio with obligatory images? Does my Flickr portfolio/Picasa photodump solution sound sound?

In den letzten knapp zehn Jahren hat die digitale Fotografie die klassischen Fotos/Dias praktisch komplett abgelöst. Seither hat sich die Zahl der Fotos vervielfacht und diese werden nicht mehr in Schuhkartons und Diakästen aufbewahrt, sondern auf PCs, USB-Disks und DVDs.

Und damit sind wir auch schon beim ersten Problem: während die Papierfotos im Schuhkarton leicht 100 Jahre überstehen, hat die Festplatte eine Lebenserwartung von lediglich 3 bis 5 Jahren. Regelmäßige Backups sind also Pflicht, am besten mehrere. Der Grundsatz lautet: Daten (auch Fotos) existieren nur, wenn es mindestens zwei Kopien davon gibt. Ich habe mich auch nicht immer an diese Regel gehalten, siehe hier.

Das zweite Problem: es war früher für jedermann, ob jung oder alt, sehr einfach das Schuhkarton herauszuholen und die Fotos anzusehen. Heute ist das etwas komplizierter, zumindest für die unter uns, die nicht den ganzen Tag am Bildschirm sitzen: der PC muss hochgefahren werden, die richtige Platte/DVD gesucht und eingelegt werden, und dann muss man sich noch durch hunderte oder tausende Fotos quälen, um die gesuchten zu finden. Hier kann uns spezielle Software zur Bildverwaltung weiterhelfen. Für den privaten Gebrauch reicht Gratis-Software wie zB Google Picasa vollkommen aus. Diese Software kann Fotos von der Kamera importieren, nach gewünschtem Schema in Ordnern ablegen und erlaubt ein Minimum an Bearbeitung. So können zB rote Augen korrigiert werden, Fotos geradegerichtet werden und die Belichtung und Farben etwas angepasst werden. Das reicht meist auch schon.
Das wichtigste ist aber das sogenannte Verschlagworten, dh jedem Bild werden einige aussagekräftige Worte zugewiesen, das kann der Aufnahmenort sein, die Namen der Personen auf dem Bild, der Anlass und ähnliches. Damit ist es jederzeit schnell möglich alle Fotos mit zB einer Sonnenblume zu finden. Ausserdem sollte man die Bilder bewerten, zB mit einem Punktesystem.

Für die Profis gibt es natürlich professionellere, sprich teurere Software, wie Apple Aperture oder Adobe Lightroom. Diese unterstützen den Fotografen beim kompletten Workflow, also Import, Entwicklung, Nachbearbeitung, Archivierung, Druck, Publishing, usw.
Wie mein Workflow früher aussah, also vor Lightroom 2, habe ich vor einem Jahr hier beschrieben. Wie ich meine Bilder jetzt verwalte werde ich in einem späteren Beitrag schreiben.

La Galería fotográfica de Windows Live es una versión mejorada de la que vienen con el Windows. Esta es una herramienta para la edición simple y administración de fotos por parte de Windows Live de la empresa Microsoft.

Allí podrás realizar pequeños retoques fotográficos como: exposición, color, enfoque, recorte y ojos rojos, aunque si lo prefieres puedes optar por un Ajuste automático, que da buenos resultados. También se puede utilizar como visor de imágenes.

Aquellas personas que hayan manejado alguna vez Adobe Photoshop, Freehand, Fireworks, Illustrator y Corel sabrán de lo que hablo y los que no esta es una de las mejores herramientas para empezar a jugar con sus fotografías.

Sin embargo se le puede sacar mucho más jugo en otra tarea: la organización de nuestras fotos. Como galería y visor de álbumes, el aspecto recuerda un tanto a Picasa. Se pueden filtrar por palabras clave (“tags”), fecha, puntuación, álbum, etc.

Muy útil resulta también si lo utilizamos para importar las imágenes desde nuestra cámara digital o tarjeta de memoria directamente a un álbum o especificando determinadas palabras clave. Si lo que quieres es justo lo contrario, exportar o publicar tus imágenes, puedes hacerlo directamente en tu espacio Live, en SoapBox (si es un video) o por correo electrónico.

La aplicación está disponible para descarga a través de la suite de Windows Live Essentials (página oficial), Softonic, Uptodown, entre muchos otros y no requiere registro.

My Flickr Pro account is due for a renewal, I paid for it in the first place because I had more photos to put online than their free package would allow.  A couple of weeks ago there was a Google announcement about their storage prices dropping ($5 a year for 20 GB to be shared between Picasa and Gmail).

This was an easy one to calculate.  Picasa works so fantastically on my Android phone, and I’m a big Google fan in the first place, but the real winner is the desktop Picasa client.  If you haven’t played with it, go get it here.  The facial recognition thing is just awesome on its own, but aside from this the basic photo editing features and organizational tools it provides are just plain excellent.

Deciding to switch was the easy part, but migrating all my Flickr images and sets to Picasa would be the hard part.  I have all these images indexed in my desktop Picasa client already, but I really liked the way I organized and tagged everything in Flickr.  I hoped there would be a way to do a bulk migration, and one quick Google search led me to a free tool called Migratr.

After a quick download and install, it steps you through the migration process easily.  First step is to feed it the source info, in my case Flickr.  It started the download after this and a short while later all 890 photos were downloaded.  Best news of all, I guess I overestimated the storage I’d need and bought that Flickr Pro account for nothing.  These files only take up around 450 MB.

So, on to step 4, Exporting up to Picasa.  This should take considerably longer since upload speeds are slower than downloading, but this is just a one time thing and I need to head out to buy some groceries anyways.

True to its promise, the upload is following the same set (folder) scheme I had at Flickr.

After a couple of minutes I hit up my Picasa page and sure enough, the new photos already show up.  Very nice, thanks Migratr!

What a joy it is to discover a new feature on a piece of software I have used and loved for yonks. With Google’s Picasa 3.5 launched several weeks ago I have been using the face recognition feature to great effect. It is hard work lets be fair but it does a lot of the work for me and it gets easier and faster. Plus, of course, no one is forcing me to sit down and do my entire collection of 10,000 photos in one week but then that’s just the way I am. I love a piece of software that appeals to my vanity and sense of orderliness and face recognition is it.

When I first bought my iMac a few weeks ago I tried importing all my photos into Apple Photo but to be honest like a lot of things Mac I didn’t like the proprietaryness of it and the fact that the face recognition software failed to work and it was a bit simplistic. Some of the tools in the Apple iPhoto were very good for individual editing but the suite that is Picasa just works for me. I wish they would improve the lighting and colour editing as the iPhoto is far superior but the key thing for me was the face recognition.

Once the software had ran through all 10,000 photos you must go through and tell it who people are to start with. Once it has recognized someone with your help it will then trundle off and try and find all the others. It does a very good job and I then had thousands of pictures to confirm or deny identity too. However, once it had done it’s bit I was still left with 5,000 photos I had to manually go through over time. And for me that means as soon as possible.

I can’t understand why it doesn’t recognise some clearly identifiable face pictures over others but hey it’s free and I have a bit of spare time so I am slowly getting there. I am down to 1,500 now so if I go through 500 a day I should be finished by Monday. I will update this blog in the mornings now as I am getting up at 5:30am so I have an hour before I disappear to do other things and it’s a lovely time of the morning, watching the sun rise over lake Michigan and clearing my in-box.

It’s Friday again already and November. I wonder when the first snows will hit. I shall leave you with that thought.

If you aren’t using Gmail as your main email client, this new Google announcement might change your mind, as moving stuff into the cloud has never been easier. Google has announced more storage for less money!

Google is so synonymous with free stuff that it’s easy to forget that it does indeed offer some for-pay services–such as additional online storage space for Gmail messages and Picasa photos. Yesterday, it announced that it’s slashing the fees it charges for extra elbow room.

The new pricing starts at $5 a year for 20GB of space, and go up to $4,096 (!) for 16TB (!!). These fees only matter after you’ve used up all the service’s free space–7GB+ for Gmail, and 1GB for Picasa–and there’s no discount as you buy more capacity. No matter which plan you get, you’re paying a quarter a gigabyte. Until yesterday, the company was charging $20 a year for 10GB, or $2 a gigabyte, or eight times as much.

Google had maintained the old price for two years, during which the cost of hard disks has nosedived, so to some extent the new pricing is just catching up with economic reality. The company says that the new cost is similar to what you’d pay per gigabyte for an external drive. But while it’s true that you’ll pay around a quarter a gig for something like a Seagate FreeAgent drive, you’re buying the drive and renting your Google space. Over three years, the FreeAgent’s total cost per gig remains a quarter, while you’ll have paid 75 cents a gig to Google.

(Not that I’m complaining: I remember paying $250 for a 500MB hard drive–or $500 a gigabyte–in the mid 1990s.)

How do the new prices compare with competitive Web services? It’s kind of hard to do the math. Yahoo, for instance, says that Yahoo Mail offers unlimited storage for free; unlimited free storage for Flickr is $25 a year. Online storage services such as Box.net and  SugarSync charge way more than Google does, but let you use their space for files of all sorts, and offer lots more features.

Ultimately, the target audience for Google online storage in its current form isn’t gigantic. You gotta think that the percentage of Gmail users who need more than 7GB of space is tiny, and that most Picasa users can make do with 1GB. (Picasa continues to feel like it’s aimed at newbies–the most hardcore photo shares I know tend to use Flickr or SmugMug.) What would really change everything would be Google rolling out the mythical Gdrive–a true hard drive in the sky–at the prices it’s charging for Gmail and Picasa. I’m guessing we will see Gdrive someday, but I don’t have a clue when it’ll show up or how much storage you’ll get, at what price.

(And sorry, but I’m still sitting here slackjawed at Google’s 16TB-for-$4,096 pricing plan. Wonder how big the market is for that?)

A equipa do Albergaria apresentou-se extremamente bem organizada e com um conhecimento táctico que muito nos apraz ver, no campeonato nacional.

Apenas nos últimos 10 minutos, a equipa da casa conseguiu superiorizar-se no marcador através da cobrança de um livre directo apontado por Carla Couto e, na conversão de uma grande penalidade, pela mesma jogadora.
