I went to the Hirshhorn Museum, and I found it completely different than other museums in a lot of cases, such as the focus, types of art, and the design. The first interesting thing I found in this museum is the interior design in which the visitors can see each piece comfortably. They do not have a lot of colors on the walls nor do they have shapes. As a result, the visitor can see the beauty of each piece of art easily because the shapes and the colors are only on the piece. Another interesting thing about this museum is the focus of it. In fact, most museums have only one focus to show. Some might have paintings and others might have sculptures. However, this museum has a lot of focuses, such as the active art, paintings, and sculptures as well, which is very interesting for the visitors. In fact, the first time I saw an active piece of art was when I went to this museum. I found many interesting pieces, such as the blue lines and the lighting room. When I first entered the museum, I enjoyed looking at the first piece, which called “Vibrations” for the artist “Soto Jesús Rafael”. As a result, I chose talking about this piece.

Artist Background:

Soto was born in 1923 in Venezuela. He was studying at the School of Fine Arts at Caracas. After that, became the director of the School of Fine Arts of Maracaibo. When he first started his career, he focused on the active and physical art. His pieces show different movements. Also, some of his pieces are not completed with out people getting involved in them. One of these pieces is in Hirshhorn Museum and called the Blue Penetrable in which people walk throw these line to complete the piece. Soto created many sculptures as well. He started from 1944 until 2003. He has done a lot of pieces for vibrations. Some of them are in Hirshhorn Museum.

Vibrations/experience:

In Soto’s website, he mentions that in making these pieces, he relies on his Mathematics in which he can make a piece that control the people’s eyes while looking at these pieces. When I first looked at the piece, I did not know that it has lines in the front. I only thought that it is a painting. However, when I got closer and faced difficulty in looking at that piece, I knew that it is an active piece. It actually has a lot of lines to form different shapes by these lines. Also, the piece looks like a moving piece, but it is formed from fixed things that do not move, which was very interesting for me. An interesting thing I liked about this piece is that it does not have colors. Although it is very beautiful, it only has two colors in it: black and gray. Also, the black framing helps to make the piece more beautiful because it gathers the gray lines and let them form the shapes. Overall, it was a very interesting experience and new discovery for me.
