I said I would occasionally post some of my photography on here and today is one such occasion. These were taken while I was taking a walk around my hometown of Seattle. A camera, a cold winter morning, a spill-safe mug of apple cider, and an empty wallet=winter wonderland.

This was taken by the Seattle pier at about 9 0′clock in the morning. I just couldn’t get over that light.

This is me pretending to be a fancy photographer, messing with the focus and stuff.

This was taken outside a Tailor shop in Belltown. The very kind owner even let me take photos of him while he worked.

These were my favorite photos of the day. I love taking shots of people working, exerting energy, doing what they do best. So this is a taste of the kind of photography I will seldom post. Happy Holidays!

I’ve had quite a lot of spare time lately due to the holidays, so I took advantage and went out to shoot some photos last night. The weather was gorgeous all day long and there was still some left over wind swell in the water. After a shot surf session near the Oceanside Pier, I decided to get out and shoot the sunset session at the Harbor. The surf was not too hot, but the occasional bigger set would come through offering up a nice little ramp. I only managed to get a few shots, but I wanted to share this one with everyone. The lighting was beautiful shortly before sunset which is when I captured this shot. I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas! May the holidays bring happiness and joy to everyones lives! As usual, take a look at the photo section of www.surfshot.com to view my most current surf galleries.

i meant to put this up a few days ago but we’ve been in Utah enjoying the cold and stunned by the beauty. Angela’s family is lovely and Hank (whom you will hear much more about in the future) has been well received. Yesterday went up to Oakley, UT to meet up with a great art director friend of ours and his family. we settled on this great old diner that they shipped from Massachusetts and dropped in Oakley called, oddly enough, the Rhode Island Diner. The place is super cool but the service was pretty bad and the food was s0-s0. still, great to see David, and finally meet his lovely family.

I was there, on the beach, the day the West Pier in Brighton finally gave in to time and tide, not to mention the arson attacks of the previous months. West Pier On Fire Part 1 / Part 2. It was the gigantic waves that initially urged me to take some pictures that day, facing away from the pier I suddenly heard an almighty scraping noise and the cracking of metal, and as I turned I saw the West Pier slide slowly into the sea.

The photos that follow show the immediate unfolding seconds of the latest travesty to befall Brighton’s West Pier.

EVERYONE LOVES SNOW …

In my experience, the weather forecasters don’t always get it right, and I always take their predictions with a grain or two of salt. I find the easiest way to tell what’s happening weather-wise is to stick your head out of the window and look up.

So when snow was forecast for our region, I was highly sceptical (too early in the season) and expected a few flakes around midnight to be the end of it.

I first noticed there was something different going on outside the window at about 9 p.m. And sure enough there was quite a shower of snowflakes whizzing past being driven by a very strong wind.

“Oh, it’s too light, it’ll never “settle” – that’s one of the first new word I learned on arrival in England. Suddenly I am the big expert on snow, having been brought up in a country where winters last about 3 weeks maximum and snow is seldom seen.

But a few hours later, the scene was entirely different, and late night revellers, caught by surprise where laughing, shouting and screaming, sliding, throwing snowballs, taking photos of one another and being generally merry.

The snow took late night revellers by surprise

This morning it was still snowing! What a lovely surprise. As soon as it was light I dressed warmly, and armed with my camera, made for my the beach. It was very slippery underfoot, and I found my feet sliding out from me on a number of occasions. I learnt to tread on virgin snow, that made the going much firmer.

The park

The nearby park was a picture, a couple walking their dog which was thoroughly enjoying the novelty of bounding through snow to inspect a snowman.

Views from the pier were superb, and there were a few of us taking advantage of the photo opportunities.

Someone had even built a snowman sitting on a bench, with a plastic spoon for a pipe.

And there was no fishing today.

Home to a lovely hot cup of coffee and a biscuit (or two).

EVERYONE HATES THE SNOW …

As the day wore on, and a weak sun made an appearance, the snow turned to a browny-grey slush, most unattractive to look at. Transport was disrupted, trains delayed, cars sliding all over the roads, Gatwick airport closed for a while, people started to get grumpy.

I had a doctor’s appointment, and the ramp from the pavement up to the surgery was slick with compacted snow that had turned to ice. Most of the complaints from those in the waiting room were about the lack of gritting and/or salt, their original aches and pains forgotten in their annoyance.

Ah well, the novelty is over, and so is the snow it seems. Perhaps there will be more in January or February – life at the coast continues.

Written 12/14/09

The gull sitting on the piling not ten feet from my car looks old and wizened as he surveys the pier from his vantage point. Plump, he must have a good bird’s eye view out for his meals. His legs are thick and sturdily planted, like he’s rooted into that piece of wood. He’s so much bigger than the other gulls who are now sunning themselves on other pilings. Clearly, he is king of the roost, judging by his size, his stance and his presence. Only the others don’t seem to be paying him any attention. Or maybe, they’re keeping their distance in quiet reverence. So content, though is he, or she that she’s now in quiet repose, legs tucked under as she sleepily surveys her surroundings. Hmmm, curious that when upright and standing firm, the gull was clearly male and now in rest and relaxation, the feminine side is so apparent. Maybe my interpretation is way off, but it doesn’t matter because for these moments in time, nothing else matters. I am totally present and engaged, hanging out on the pier with my gull buddy.

Steel Pier menutup pintu pada Hari mengembalikan jati diri bangsa Buruh Weekend untuk terakhir kalinya. Bau laut udara laut gulali popcorn dan hot dog sudah hilang selamanya. The Pier diperluas ke Samudera Atlantik hampir . kaki.

Hermosa Beach is a break from the downtown LA vibe; in it’s place is a mellow and laid back atmosphere. Hermosa Beach is definitely a walk friendly town. The Strand, which runs next to the sands of Hermosa offers a wonderful beach view 365 days of the year. A few blocks down is Hermosa Avenue which is lined with shops & restaurants. You can see locals and tourists alike taking a walk on Hermosa Avenue, whether it be to grab a bite to eat, or peruse the stores.

The Hermosa Pier offers many restaurants and shops for many different walks of life. The Pier Plaza is blocked off to traffic and is a great place to hang out. Some places worth checking out in that area are Hennessey’s and Mediterraneo.

Head east and check out Zane’s on the corner of Pier & Hermosa. Walk even further up the hill and find local favorites like Fritto Misto and Creme De La Crepe.

Longing for some New Orleans flavor? Then check out Ragin Cajun. Want some Thai food? Fear not, for you can find Thai Top even further up the street.

There’s even some hair salons, including my personal favorite, Mimosa. As well as a mini spa, the Massage Spot. There’s clearly something for everyone. If that’s not enough, there’s free 3 hour parking at the meters on Pier Ave. from now until Dec 25th.

The theme for the latest Festival of Postcards hosted by Evelyn at A Canadian Family blog is white.

The theme for the latest Festival of Postcards hosted by Evelyn at A Canadian Family blog is white.

Given the time of year and the fact that there are rumours going around that we might have a White Christmas in Sussex this year (I very much doubt it!), there was only really one choice of card from my collection.

This is rather different to the usual seaside view of Eastbourne, Sussex showing the promenade and pier. There are a few figures on the beach, but no tourists enjoying ice cream in the sunshine. Although judging by the number of footprints it does look like there had been plenty of people out strolling along the promenade.

The “great blizzard” was on the 28th December 1908 and of course the heavy snowfall wasn’t confined to just Eastbourne or Sussex, but much of Britain appears to have been affected.

According to The Sussex Weather Book (Froglets Publications and Frosted Earth, 1991) in Eastbourne, “so fierce was the blizzard on the sea front that the snow and mist rendered the sea invisible”.

The Brighton Herald newspaper (quoted in The Sussex Weather Book) described the scene:

“There is nothing that so utterly transforms a town as such a fall of snow as that of this week. It brings with it a rare witchery of beauty, yet a rare sense of desolation. The beauty is in the encrusting of the trees, the silvering of the bushes and the mantling of lawns in purest white. The effect of desolation was heightened by the profound hush. Indeed the strange effect of deep snow to the townsman is the silence that it brings”.

Ironically the ice skating rink at Brighton had to be closed because “snow was percolating through the roof and covering the floor”.

One of my favorite places to photograph is Lake Winnipeg. It’s close proximity to where I live and shear size, provide endless opportunity for exploration. It’s the world’s 11th largest freshwater lake, and at times you would swear you’re on the shores of one of the world’s great oceans. Locals call it the ‘Inland Sea’. Lake Winnipeg is historically significant to Manitoba, and remains intertwined with the lives of all Manitoban’s to this day. It serves as a massive reservoir for the large hydroelectric dams in the north, functions as a major commercial fishery, and is lined with thousands of cottages and sandy beaches. Along the western shore, are Matlock and Dunnottar; cottage towns that are known for the series of wooden piers that line the lake.

The piers are roughly assembled from local timbers. At first glance you may think they’re scenic, but nothing particularly special about them. But they are unique; in this part of the world, the lakes freeze solid. So every freezup the piers are disassembled before succumbing to the crushing ice. From what I’ve been told a local craftsmen then uses the wood to make log furniture, and in the spring the whole process starts all over. When I first learned this, it put a whole new perspective and appreciation on the piers.

It’s impossible to represent an entire province with one type of landscape, you could argue an image of the prairie is more suitable in describing the landscape of Manitoba. But when I think of Manitoba, it’s images like these of Lake Winnipeg that I always think of.

Image design is one of the key ingredients in making a great photograph. As a photographer who is always trying to learn more, I wanted to focus on composition only. I have taken courses that cover composition but I just wanted to focus on composition and nothing else. This week the goal was to keep everything simple. Viewers should know exactly what your photograph is all about. Less is more. Make sure there are no distracting elements and watch your edges. For my assignment, I decided to drive along the road side and just stop at a few areas that caught my eye. Above is a sample of a photo I took this past week which shows simple and to the point composition.

Last weekend, young and old alike gathered on Penarth’s seafront to witness Ffosfforescence, a light

Last weekend, young and old alike gathered on Penarth’s seafront to witness Ffosfforescence, a light installation devised by Bristol-based artists David Boultbee and Ruth Essex.

With the help of artists and local residents, David and Ruth filled balloons with LEDs and displayed them in the sea in a project designed to use light to articulate hidden spaces and shadows of famous landmarks.

Ffosforescence was born after the duo were asked by Ffotogallery, a local art gallery based at Turner House, to come up with a large-scale installation to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Penarth Pavilion.

“One of the aims of the project was to demonstrate the might of the sea,” said Ruth,

“The length of time that the balloons stayed visible was determined by the tide, so the work we did shows how powerful it really is.”

And the balloons were not the only things fighting to survive.

Piering back into the past

Penarth Pavilion, one of the main focal points of the town, has been a major landmark ever since its grand opening in 1929.

But a series of setbacks, including a fire in 1931, have meant more than one generation of Penarth’s public has been unable to see the pavilion in all its glory.

Now, with lottery funding proving more than just a distant possibility, locals may be able to take in the delights of the building sooner rather than later.

The installation was visible from far away, and was able to draw in passers-by (Photo: David Drake)

The redevelopment project, which is set to include a cinema and a number of restaurants, will not be cheap.

As the appeal for lottery funding is only at an early stage it is difficult to estimate just how much things will eventually cost, but it is fair to say the town’s £400,000 annual budget would fail to accommodate such a large-scale development.

Councillor John Forbes Fraser, the mayor of Penarth, claims that the project is “essentially” the responsibility of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, but he has pledged his (and Penarth Town Council’s) support towards all the work done towards the pavilion’s redevelopment.

“We are 200% behind the project,” said Coun Fraser.

“I would love to see it come off. One thing we can do as a council is lobby.”

Ffoto opportunities

The ’save Penarth Pavilon’ project is being supported by two major art galleries in the centre of the town, Ffotogallery@Turner House on Plymouth Road and The Washington Gallery on Stanwell Road.

And many locals, including adults and children of all ages, flocked to Ffotogallery on Saturday where they filled balloons with LEDs under the guidance of experts from Dorkbot Bristol, a group who describe themselves as “People doing strange things with electricity in the West of England.”

After a few hours’ work, and a few mince pies put on by the gallery, the willing volunteers then helped take the light-filled balloons down to the sea-front where they would produce a visually stunning display.

Volunteers from Penarth (and further afield) help set up the display on the seafront (Photo: David Drake)

Anne Siegel, digital arts project manager at Ffotogallery, was very pleased with how things turned out on Saturday night.

“I have been so busy with the project over the last few days and weeks,” said Anne.

“And on Saturday night it was basically us against the tide, so it was good that people could stay out and see the installation until about 8.30 or 9.”

Map showing Ffotogallery and the surrounding area

The artists themselves showed their appreciation for the effort put in by the volunteers, and recognised how difficult the installation would have been to set up without the help of the townspeople and experts who devoted their time throughout Saturday.

“Loads of people came down to help out,” said David Boultbee.

“I was impressed by the number of families that came along, it seemed that a lot of the town was happy to get involved.”

“Also, I think the fact that you could see the lights from the top of the hill helped bring more people in. Maybe even people who were just passing by with no intention of coming to look at the installation.”

Looking to the future

It seems that all involved are pleased with the impact made by the Ffosfforescence installation. As well as demonstrating the artistic vision and capabilities of David and Ruth, it has the potential of achieving a more long-term goal.

If nothing else, the installation has made more people – across South Wales and beyond – aware of the campaign to save and redevelop Penarth Pier Pavilion.

And with the first barrier crossed in the journey towards lottery funding for the project, it is surely only a matter of time before the building is returned to its former glory.
