Rondo and the Celtics took it to us tonight Hey Jose and Andrea, next time you don’t feel like

Rondo and the Celtics took it to us tonight

Hey Jose and Andrea, next time you don’t feel like showing up for a game against a good team, do you mind informing the rest of the team in advance so they can try about 200% harder? Behind a pair of no-shows in their starting five and another patented third quarter collapse, the Raptors fell to the Celtics 116-103 in Boston tonight. Excuse the negativity, but there’s just nothing good to say about this team right now.

Calderon had nine points, four assists and three turnovers and Bargnani had seven points and four boards, negating strong efforts from Chris Bosh and Hedo Turkoglu, who each had 20 in the loss. After starting hot, Turkoglu didn’t help his cause by picking up his fourth foul of the night early in the third quarter, in which Toronto was outscored 33-17 and officially put to bed. In the past three games, the Raptors have been manhandled 105-64 in the third.

This one actually looked pretty good at halftime — despite committing 14 turnovers and allowing Boston to shoot 68% in the first half, Toronto held a one-point advantage and stretched it to four in the early minutes of the third before the wheels fell off. Paul Pierce capped it off by making a poster of Bosh early in the fourth, causing Jay Triano to raise some hell to which his team, not surprisingly, didn’t respond.

In the end, a loss that was likely to happen one way or another. Still, pretty disappointing when two guys that’ll be counted on if this team hopes to be any sort of a contender don’t bother making their presence felt.

Now 7-10, the Raps are home to face the Suns on Sunday in the first of two straight at the ACC.

"Why are you so mean, KG?" I usually love watching the Celtics play, but that mood changes

"Why are you so mean, KG?"

I usually love watching the Celtics play, but that mood changes considerably when they’re facing the Raptors. Fresh off a 116-81 pounding at the hands of the Bobcats, Toronto will look to bounce back tonight against Jose Calderon’s best friend (Mr. KG, in case you forget) in Boston. As always, check in at Raptors Republic for the best preview in the business.

As easily as the Celtics have handled us in Toronto the past couple years, the Raps have actually put up some decent battles on the parquet floor in Boston. Calderon took over a game in January ‘08 (the Celts’ championship year) before his famous encounter with Garnett early last season, and Andrea Bargnani forced overtime with a late three in an eventual 115-109 loss in the second meeting. The Celtics come into this one looking a little susceptible too, following a tight win over a Sixers team they usually pound and a near-disastrous loss to the Knicks over the weekend. Still, at 11-4 and with the Fantastic Four still in tact, they’re as good a bet as any to win the East this season.

Toronto comes in desperately in need of a bounce-back following Wednesday’s embarrassment in Charlotte. I called out Chris Bosh yesterday and stand by it — now’s the time to step up, big man. This is as tough a game as you’ll play all year, so let’s go make a statement.

The Raptors and Celtics get going from TD Banknorth Garden at 7:30.

I hate fucking ABBA. Their music is really only appropriate in two places, at a wedding party and at

I hate fucking ABBA. Their music is really only appropriate in two places, at a wedding party and at a New Years Eve party. In other words when people are massively, massively, massively drunk. When our pub had a jukebox I had my own personal ban on ABBA. If one of their songs came on when the Jukebox was on random play I demanded it was skipped. I did let it play if someone had actually paid for it. I may be a dick but I’m not that much of a dick. Besides, those times were thankfully very few and far between.

Which surprised me to be honest because this film, this fucking film, did better at the box office in my hometown of Braintree, Essex than ‘The Dark Knight’ did. Apparently this town is filled with repressed ABBA fans, glad for a film to come out featuring their music so that they could sit there in the dark cinema where people might not recognise them. So yeah, thanks for that Braintree.

In fact a quick check of the internet reveals that Mamma Mia! Is the highest grossing film of all time in the UK. Yep, we had an empire that once spanned the globe and now we’re going mental for films based around the songs of a 70s Swedish pop group. Rule Britannia indeed.

Anyway, back to this movie. It basically tells the tale of a woman and her daughter who run a villa on an island for some reason. The daughter has met the boy of her dreams and intends to marry him. There’s one problem though. She’d really like her father to give her away at her wedding but because her mother was something of a slut in her youth, she has no idea who her father is. She finds her mother’s diary and sends invitations to three potential fathers, without telling her mother, and waits for them arrive. They do and shenanigans ensue.

Now, as I previously stated, I fucking hate ABBA but today I found out that I actually hate something more than their songs. It’s their songs sung by people who can’t sing. This was like watching a bunch of drunk people on a bad karaoke night. A really bad karaoke night. Except that I was watching it at work so I couldn’t drink. Dear God, I’ve never wanted a drink so bad in my life.

Well, I suppose that’s a little unfair. Meryl Streep ain’t bad. Not great but not bad. Still, the worst offender when it comes to aural raping is Pierce Brosnan. What the hell are you doing man? You were James Bond for fucks sake. You were the James Bond I grew up with, for better or for worse and now your singing ABBA songs whilst making a face that makes it look as if you’re trying to cough up a tortoise.

But it’s not just the singing that’s bad either! Some of the actors in this film are the worst I’ve seen outside of a B-Movie in many a year. In particular I’d like to say that the guy who plays Sophie’s fiancée Skye is a terrible actor. He was so wooden and insincere that I thought that he was being played by some kind of sarcastic puppet.

Oh, and another thing. Half the dialogue in this film seems to be delivered in some kind of strange, shrieking language that I’m fairly sure only women can understand. If you are going to do such a thing then you should probably have included subtitles for those poor bastards who got dragged along to see this by their wives and girlfriends.

Now, there were a couple of times when the film elicited a chuckle out of me. One was when a drill was used as a euphemism for a penis, telling me more than I wanted to know about exactly what childish level my sense of humour is at. The other was at the image of Pierce Brosnan dressed as a hippy. That was kinda funny. There was also one scene which I thought was kinda cool for a split second. The guests at the daughter’s hen party are looking over some kind of cliff ledge and a bunch of people are crawling up it. For one sweet second I thought it was some kind of zombie attack and I thought wow, people kept this twist quiet but alas, it was just the bachelor party on some kind of panty raid. I was sorely, sorely disappointed.

Perhaps the point where the movie really stretched the limit of believability was when all three potential fathers figured out the reason that they were invited out of the blue. They all came to the conclusion individually that they were the girls father and she wanted them to walk her down the aisle. However, they had all spent quite some time together at this point and they all knew that the other two had received equally mysterious invitations. How the fuck did they not realise that the other two were there for exactly the same reason and that Sophie hadn’t yet figured out who her actual father was? That’d be the first thing that came to my mind.

Perhaps the best thing about this movie is the fact that I watched Tremors directly before it. Man, Tremors is such an awesome film. Kevin Bacon is at his finest and you really believe that him and Fred Ward have worked together and been friends for quite some time. And who doesn’t love crazy survivalist Burt? And the Graboids still look fucking good even by today’s standards. Sure you can sometimes see the strings used to operate the tentacles in some scenes but it just adds to the charm of the movie. One thing that does confuse me though is the DVD cover. Seriously look it up now. I’ll wait.

Ok, you back? Right, what the fuck is that creature on the DVD cover with all the teeth and stuff? That looks nothing like the Graboids in the film. It just confuses me. Anyway, overall I’ll give Tremors four pints out of five.

Wait, what? Mamma Mia? Oh fine. I give Mamma Mia! one glass of white wine out of five. And you wanna know what the worst thing is? There is one ABBA song, one song that I can kind of stand. That song is Waterloo. Not sure why I don’t mind it. Maybe I’m just OK with songs based on historical events. Anyway, it’s not fucking in the film until the end credits. I kept thinking, oh just suffer through, at least Waterloo isn’t the worst thing in the world and they must have included it and then it turns out you have to watch the entire fucking film to get to it. And it takes place during this bizarre credit scene where Meryl Streep and her two friends yell at the audience asking if they want another song. Waterloo then follows filled with some of the most embarrassing dancing I’ve seen outside of a wedding reception… Which I guess is appropriate. Still, it well wasn’t worth it.

Fuck, this film has put me in a bad mood for the rest of the goddamn day. Still, if people like this kinda thing, and apparently they do, then it does give some hope for my planned film ‘Snooker Loopy’ featuring the music of Chas and Dave. Laterz.

Facing the possibility cuts in state aid, area liquor store owners have raised $10,000 to fund a pro

Facing the possibility cuts in state aid, area liquor store owners have raised $10,000 to fund a program designed to help combat underaged drinking by placing undercover cops inside and outside liquor stores in a joint effort.

Police from Attleboro, North Attleboro, Norton and Mansfield and liquor store owners Chris Gasbarro and David Cummings announced the program called “Cops in Shops” Friday at the North Attleboro police station.

“People aren’t going to know when or where or in what liquor establishment we will be in,” Attleboro Police Chief Richard Pierce Sr. said at a news conference.

There are 40 to 50 liquor stores in the four communities, and all have indicated a willingness to take part in the program, Pierce said.

Undercover police will either pose as customers or employees to nab underage youths attempting to buy booze or adults willing to buy for them. Undercover officers will also be working surveillance outside stores. “We’re all aware of the recent tragedies that have occurred in our area,” Pierce said, adding that police are preparing to combat underage drinking parties by college students returning home for the holidays to prevent more tragedies.

With undercover police inside or outside the stores, violators will be able to apprehended at the scene, said Gasbarro, owner of Fine Wine and Spirits in Seekonk and Capadanos in North Attleboro.

“This prevents what we call store hopping,” Gasbarro added, saying it was common for underage people to go from store to store when they are turned away or can’t get an adult to buy booze for them.

“Nobody wants to serve to a minor,” said Cummings of Yankee Spirits in Attleboro.

Pierce said the program is not new and has been effective in the past with state aid. But because continued state funding for the program and other liquor enforcement efforts is uncertain because of the state budget crisis, police and liquor retailers have collaborated to raise funds through donations.

“We’ve decided to think a little outside the box,” Pierce said, praising the efforts of liquor store owners to raise money and join forces with police in fighting underage drinking.

Norton Police Chief Brian Clark said underage drinking is a problem for all communities and one that requires a unified effort because it doesn’t stop at city or town lines.

The operation has the support of the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission, the Governor’s Highway Safety Bureau, the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office and The Century Council, a national non-profit organization dedicated to reducing drunken driving and underage drinking problems.

Anyone under 21 who attempts to purchase alcohol faces a maximum $300 fine and the suspension of their driver’s licenses for 180 days. Adults who purchase or furnish booze for underage youths face up to a $2,000 fine, a 1-year jail term or both.

“The message we want to publicize is that we’re not going to tolerate underage drinking,” Pierce said. Last year, police throughout the area stepped up alcohol enforcement after 17-year-old King Phillip High School senior Taylor Meyer of Plainville died after an underage drinking party in woods in Norfolk following a homecoming football game.

It was only a matter of seconds before 10 police officers dressed in black SWAT helmets and black bulletproof vests with POLICE emblazoned in bright white letters stormed a house after smashing windows and breaking open doors.

It looked and sounded like the real thing late Tuesday morning, but it was only a simulated drug raid.

And unlike an actual raid, they did it over and over again and huddled outside the vacant house at 20 Curtis Ave. afterward to critique their actions.

The aim is to improve their skills so that when the real thing goes down, no one gets hurt.

“We’re doing this to better prepare ourselves for any real life encounters,” said Detective Lt. John Otrando, who commands the police department’s Tactical Response Team with Sgts. John Parkinson and Michael McDonnell.

Training by the 13 members of the unit is all the more important in preparation for unpredictable events, such as the mass shooting at Fort Hood in Texas and the office shootings in Orlando, Fla., last week.

In addition, a state trooper was shot last week in a New Bedford drug raid, but was not hurt because the bullet was blocked by his bulletproof vest.

“That’s why the guys train. You are going to encounter things like that,” Otrando said, adding that the officers in the New Bedford raid were properly trained and equipped, and no one was hurt.

After a year of training, the Attleboro team began operating on the streets last year. Recently, team members responded to a house in South Attleboro where a man thought to be armed had barricaded himself.

Mostly, the training is performed in “sterile” environments or at the shooting range, Otrando said.

But thanks to the owner of the Curtis Avenue home, Daniel Lopes, the team got to use the house – which is scheduled for demolition – to simulate an actual raid.

Otrando said the team approached the practice raid as if it were real. That meant taking photographs of the house, familiarizing themselves with the layout as best they could by looking in the windows and forming an operational plan.

None of the officers had been inside the house before, he said.

In the drill, 10 members of the unit were divided into two five-man teams. One team approached from the rear of the home while the initial entry team broke through the front door.

They were armed with a range of weapons, including tactical M-4 rifles and non-lethal weapons such as bean bag guns and Tasers. For the purposes of the training exercise on Curtis Avenue, none of the weapons were loaded, the street was blocked and the neighbors were notified in advance.

“Red Team is in position,” a voice cracks over Otrando’s police radio.

“Move,” Otrando orders into his radio, as the five members of “Blue Team” approach the front of the house in a line behind the front member holding a bulletproof shield.

“Initiate,” Otrando says as the men enter the house after one of the officers break the door open with a metal battering ram.

“Police. On the ground,” the men can be heard yelling from outside the house.

“Bathroom is clear. Bathroom is clear.”

“The element of surprise is very important in any tactical operation,” Police Chief Richard Pierce said while watching the unit train.

“Generally, the bad guys have all the time in the world to think about what they are going to do when we respond,” Pierce said.

The police chief says the police department also can use the regional Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council SWAT team and the state police unit, but the city police department team can assemble quicker when needed.

“To me, it’s important that we have a well-trained team in the city. They are really dedicated individuals,” Pierce said.

One member, John Hynes, who is a team trainer, has practiced with several other tactical operation teams, including the regional Metro-LEC team and the Pawtucket police SWAT team. Member Kevin Fuoco is a trained emergency medical technician.

“It’s a nice resource to have, but you hope you never have to use it,” Pierce said. “But in this day and age, you never know what you are going to be confronted with.”

A crowd of 10,920 (second largest in team regular season history) was on hand last night to watch the Cyclones’ special teams overcome the Tolledo Walleye. The Cyclones threw two powerplay goals and a shorthanded empty netter up with a couple even strength goals to bring home the game 5-2. While Robert Mayer was only tested 22 times by the Walleye, he came up with some unbelievable acrobatic stops with his legpads. The defense came up big as well in the third period to help him out with Toledo turning on the burners late.

Notes:
– Toledo was 0/5 on the Power Play. The Cyclones are now 34/34 on the PK though eight games. Chuck Weber’s special teams philosophy is that if you’re > 110%, you’re in pretty good shape. With the PK at 100%, the power play’s 20% showing puts the team well over his goal.
– The shorthanded empty net goal was a 6 on 4 for Toledo. For a two-man advantage, there was little dominance on that PP. The Cyclones controlled the puck for a majority of it.
– Captain Ehgoetz and Reid Cashman both netted their first goals of the season.
– Matt Pierce’s game winning goal was his seventh goal of the season. He’s third in the league behind Ryan Kinasewich of Utah and Chanse Fitzpatrick of Elmira.
– The Cyclones have only committed 111 PIM, which is by far the league’s lowest. This is a Chuck Weber team right here.

There’s nothing more satisfying than coming home after a long day of studying to an episode of Community. In this episode Annie throws a Dia De Los Muertos party for extra credit for Spanish Class (Senor Chang’s gonna bite you). Towards the end Jeff talks Pierce out of his fortress of chairs and tables when it starts to collapse. Abed as Batman tickles me. So did the Abed-Troy end credit segment.

Our local community college (Pierce) puts on a Halloween carnival every year and I have gone for the past several years.

They have several different things there. They have a petting zoo, a regular corn maze (a different design each year, this year it is to stay ‘green’), food, a show, and pumpkins for sale during the day. At night they open up a “creatures of the corn” maze in which people jump out at you and scare the crap out of you and a haunted house.

I did the corn maze a couple of years ago with my mom and it was ridiculously fun! My mom ran and became crazy! I had never gone to the mansion because I usually go to the one that is closer to my house, Spooky House. This year, though, it closed because the creator died over the summer.

Matt and I had decided to go a while ago. It’s expensive at $20 for the maze and haunted house for each person. Matt’s friend, though, had VIP passes because of work he had done for them a couple of years ago.

We did the house first and it was SCARY. It’s amazing how scared you get even though you KNOW it’s all fake and that they won’t touch you or do anything to you. The mind is a crazy thing! Same for the maze! It was totally awesome! Liked it VERY much!

It was a lot of fun!

A self-proclaimed bedroom producer Pierce (Dominic Fabrig) has certainly made an impression on me! I’m having considerable trouble trying to articulate why I like this track (Something To Finish) so much, having put the track on repeat while trying to write this riveting little blurb I have come to the conclusion that it is just – Rad. Anyway rather then listen to me rabble on about my lack of ability to describe music I like, how about you just listen and come to your own conclusion? Also check out the bonus track it comes highly recommended, should carry you through to Friday and well, just make you smile!
