by Pierre Boulle
originally published in 1963
This 2000 edition published by Gramercy Books

Recently I set myself down in front of my television and watched a marathon of all the “Planet of the Apes” movies and was amazed at how they were still good after all these years. I also noticed how some of the social commentary was still applicable. While watching the credits roll on all the films I kept seeing that they were all based on the novel by Pierre Boulle, and being the avid reader/autodidactic I am, I decided to read the novel. This novel is a classic, I’ve discovered and should be required reading for our youth because, while the 6 films touched on some social commentary, issues like racism, class divisions, vivisection, and the dangers of close-mindedness, Pierre Boulle had all this wrapped in this one 191 page novel.

Basically if you take all the concepts from the films (except for “Beneath the Planet of the Apes”) you get this one story. It’s odd how all the films have a touch of some of the original novel but not one single movie had all the action/concepts. Also only 4 characters from the book made it to the original 70s era movies and Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes from 2001 added one more character from the novel. Those characters are; Cornelius, Zira, Zaius, Nova and Hector. In the 2001 film Hector played an important part but in the novel the Earth chimp is killed not long after landing on the Planet of the Apes.

Here’s the story in a nutshell. Jinn and Phyllis, a couple out on a pleasure cruise in a spaceship, find a message in a bottle floating in space. The message inside the bottle is the testimony of a man, Ulysse Mérou, who has written down his story in the hope that someone else, somewhere, will find it. Ulysse begins by explaining that he was a friend of Professor Antelle, a genius scientist on Earth, who invented a spaceship that could travel at nearly the speed of light. Ulysse, the professor, and a physicist named Levain fly off in this ship to explore outer space. They travel to the nearest star system that the professor theorized might be capable of life, the red sun Betelgeuse, which would take them about 350 years to reach. Due to time dilation, however, the trip seems to the travelers only to last two years.

Upon landing on this planet in the Betlguese system, which they name Soror, the astronauts see signs of civilization but find that the humans are like wild animals living in the jungle and without the ability of speech. After the humans discover the astronauts they go wild and attack the landing craft, destroying it and the clothes, which the humans don’t wear on this planet. The astronauts “go native” in order to understand this society. Soon it is discovered that the humans aren’t the dominate race, when a gorilla hunting party begins trapping and killing humans.

Ulysse manages to escape being killed only to be trapped, caged and taken to some chimpanzee scientists. Levain is killed and the fate of Professor Antelle is unknown at this time.

Ulysse at first observes the ape culture then finds an ally in Zira, a chimpanzee scientist. Zira and Cornelius (her fiance), plan to show Ulysse at a scientific forum, to help prove Cornelius theories of evolution. Soon Ulysse becomes somewhat of a celebrity among the apes and is treated like an ape (like the apes were in “Escape from the Planet of the Apes”). Not long after Ulysse is exposed to the ape culture, a strange archaeological site is found to show that humans were once the dominant species and that out of laziness became the lower life form and the apes took over in an uprising (like in the last 2 movies of the original series;”Conquest…” & “Battle…”).

Soon Zira, Cornelius and Ulysse learns the scientists want to destroy all evidence of humans once being dominant, that includes Ulysse, so they plan his escape. One thing at this point I should point out is that the Apes on Soror are not the same as in the movies, they are technologically advanced and just beginning to send satellites into space. Yep, the apes drive cars and fly planes.

This book has a great twist ending, although it is nowhere near the Charlton Heston scene with the Statue of Liberty, it is a bit of a surprise.

Jim Lowe – Times Argus Staff

Science fiction has long attracted hordes of movie-goers, perhaps because it predicts the future.
“People are interested in the future and what it holds,” explained Eric Reynolds, creator of the Savoy Theater’s Sci-Fi July film festival, now in its third year. “I’m fascinated by the future. I would love to see what the earth looks like in 500 years – if human beings are still around – and I enjoy a good action-adventure story, which a lot of science fiction has.”
This year, Sci-Fi July will present nine science fiction films at the Montpelier art film theater, from the classic 1956 “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” to the 1986 thriller “Aliens.”
“There are different kinds of science fiction,” Reynolds said. “There are very positive and negative science fiction stories. This summer, for instance, there are two vastly different science fiction films that have already come out, ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Terminator Salvation’ – they’re very different futures.”
One of the attractions is certainly the technology.
“Everything we do is centered around technology – the computers and the Internet,” Reynolds said. “I think we’re making our way to what science fiction has shown us already.”
Science fiction has also helped mold the technology, particularly the original 1966 “Star Trek.”
“Even scientists use that as a guide for technologies that they’d like to see,” Reynolds said. “I think we have those – the cell phone looks very much like the communicator from the original ‘Star Trek.’”
Sci-fi also predicted the personal computer, among other things.
“All sorts of things have grown out of what people imagine,” Reynolds said. “Science fiction more and more is becoming science reality.”
Several of this year’s films were on Reynolds’ list from the beginning, but there wasn’t space to schedule them.
“Films like ‘Close Encounters’ and ‘Brazil’ were on the list the very first year, but I just didn’t have room to show them,” he said. “They’re great films – ‘Close Encounters’ is a favorite of mine.”
In Steven Spielberg’s 1977 Oscar-winner, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” follows a line worker who, after a encounter with UFOs, is drawn to an isolated area in the wilderness where something spectacular is about to happen. In a very different vein, Terry Gilliam’s 1985 cult classic, “Brazil” pillories government bureaucracy with a tale of an unimportant civil servant drawn into the world of terrorists over a young woman he dreams of.
Last year, “Barbarella,” Roger Vadim’s 1985 erotic sci-fi spoof starring Jane Fonda, was the most attended film the festival. Hence, “Logan’s Run” and “Flash Gordon,” in the same vein. An Academy Award winner for visual effects, Michael Anderson’s 1976 “Logan’s Run” chronicles a future society which maintains its equilibrium by killing anyone who reaches the age of 30. Mike Hodges’ campy 1980 “Flash Gordon” is based on the macho comic book super-hero of the same name.
“I would love to have some classic films in there, so ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ and “Dr. Strangelove’ certainly fit that bill,” Reynolds said. “They both happen to be about the Cold War. They’re sort of from the same era, showing different aspects of that.”
In Don Siegel’s 1956 “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” which was subjected to several remakes, a community finds that its citizens are being replaced by emotionless alien duplicates. “Dr. Stranglelove,” Stanley Kubrick’s black comedy starring Peter Sellars and George C. Scott, satirizes the nuclear scare.
Another that Reynolds has wanted to present from the beginning is “Planet of the Apes,” Franklin Schaffner’s 1968 film based on the novel by Pierre Boulle in which apes rule and humans are subservient.
“I actually read the book a couple of years ago,” Reynolds said. “I thought it was a great book. It’s very different from both movie versions.”
Charlton Heston. starred, as he did in a number of sci-fi films, including “The Omega Man” (1971) and “Soylent Green” (1973).
Sci-Fi July has been attracting a small but dedicated audience since its inception, one that is growing.
“The same people who come again and again – but that group is slowly getting larger and larger,” Reynolds said. “It seems to be mainly younger people, people in their 20s and early 30s.”
But, that is changing. After complaints about the original 11 p.m. screenings being too late for some “older” people, Reynolds added matinees.
“And we got a much wider range of people,” he said. “I think it’s people who like seeing classic or even campy films, and films that they have heard of but not on a large screen. They love the fact that we’re still doing it.”

Year: 1975
Network: NBC
Creator: David H. DePatie & Friz Freleng (developers); Pierre Boulle (characters)
Directors: Doug Wildey
Writers: Larry Spiegel, Jack Kaplan, John Barrett, J.C. Strong, Bruce Shelly
Starring: Austin Stoker, Philippa Harris, Henry Corden, Richard Blackburn, Edwin Mills, Claudette Nevins, Tom Williams
Music: Dean Elliott
Episodes: 13, at c. 24 minutes
Synopsis: three astronauts crash on the Planet of the Apes and defend its human population from a mad gorilla general
How I saw it: on video (have on DVD), over the past few days
Subjective Rating: 6/10
Objective Rating: 3/10 (gets points for concept, music and subjective rating)

Terrible acting. Terrible animation. Terrible writing – although the overall story arc is actually pretty good, enough so that I enjoyed the show. Check out the deceptively fun theme music sequence:

We also recently tried watching the 1974 live action TV series. Couldn’t get past the first disc (four episodes), it’s just too awful. I have never seen a TV show that’s more insulting to its audience. Compared to that, the cartoon seems great.

Meh. You’ve got to give it some props for being ripped of as The Road Warrior, but otherwise there’s not much here. This is the fifth Apes movie, and each installment of the franchise is progressively worse. By this point, they just don’t seem to care anymore. Most of the apes’ mouths don’t even move when they talk. I give it as high a score as I do because I’m biased toward bad, campy sci-fi.

Aconselho vivamente!

The Bridge on the River Kwai | David Lean, 1957

David Lean’s epic wartime picture The Bridge on the River Kwai is a film that put the director’s name up in lights. Lean, then largely unknown outside of Britain wasn’t first choice for the role however. It was a huge project, and the likes of John Ford, William Wyler, Howard Hawks and Orson Welles were initially considered by Columbia Pictures. Indeed, power producer Sam Spiegel himself is quoted as saying that the Englishman Lean was chosen “in absence of anyone else”. It’s a decision I’m sure many involved can look upon fondly, for in the many controversy-filled months that followed Lean and co. created something of extraordinary importance. The Bridge on the River Kwai is based upon the novel of the same name by French writer Pierre Boulle and follows a rigid Colonel named Nicholson (played by Alec Guinness) as he and his men are forced to build a bridge while held captive. Nicholson clashes with his opposing number, the oppressive force of Colonel Saito, over the fact that officers shouldn’t be made to work. Each man takes a steadfast stance against one another, but it isn’t until the will of one eventually breaks that work can commence on the bridge and the story is allowed to unfold. I’ve always thought of The Bridge on the River Kwai as two significant halves; the struggle between Nicholson and Saito sets the tone and respective stances of these two titanic characters. It also introduces Commander Shears (William Holden) whom we follow more closely in the second half, as he and a team of individuals seek to blow up the bridge for obvious advantageous purposes.

The first half of The Bridge on the River Kwai details those stubborn traits known as pride and honour. Neither man wishes to sway from his beliefs, the critical difference and deciding factor being that one man has much to lose whereas the other has nothing. This nobility that Nicholson exudes throughout the film has become synonymous with the British army and to some extent Britain as a nation. Yet the film doesn’t always portray it in the most flattering light, for Nicholson is a man seen to be almost blinded by this so-called virtue. Indeed, David Lean is said to have had many arguments with his cast over the content of the novel, content that many believed was in fact anti-British. As The Bridge on the River Kwai careens into its action-packed second half we are shown another undeniable human trait, that of a more destructive nature. This quality is represented in demolitions expert Major Warden, whose lust to rain destruction down upon Nicholson’s exquisite creation is unmatched. The madness of these men ensures that the film hurtles towards a disastrous conclusion that once again brings fire to this beautifully sombre pocket of nature. We watch on, helpless, our own horror evident upon the face and within the final words of Nicholson’s right-hand man Major Clipton. The Bridge on the River Kwai is one of those timeless efforts whose position of greatness may never, ever be questioned. A film that is driven by Alec Guinness’ astounding performance and irreparably etched into our own collective conscious through the stunning scenes of War that David Lean presents.

Distinctions: currently #246 in IMDb’s Top 250
Synopsis: damn dirty apes
How I saw it: on video, a lot (used to have on VHS), most recently July 2008
Subjective Rating: <del>8/10</del> 9/10
Objective Rating: 9/10 (1 point off for special effects/design)

I love this stuff. It’s the quintessential science fiction film of an era (for all the right reasons), and a damn good movie besides that. As for the special effects/design point – I don’t care how groundbreaking the make up and costumes were at the time; they look like rubber masks to me. There really isn’t any way to make a live action movie about talking animals look convincing, even today. And besides having production values only slightly better than Star Trek, I do not understand why the Ape city is modeled after Bedrock.

Planet of the Apes (2001)

Captain Leo Davidson, for reasons too stupid to go into, finds himself crash landing through a bizarre space storm on to a planet where apes are the dominant species and fond of quoting lines from the 1967 movie Planet of the Apes.

5/10

Entirely non-sensical science-fiction action movie that remains curiously bland despite some of the greatest make-up ever seen and the presence of director Tim Burton. In fact, my brother hit the nail on the head when he commented that "this didn’t feel like a Tim Burton film." That said, we can enjoy apes doing all sorts of fun things such as removing their wigs and false teeth (my favourite), cheating at cards, getting ready for foreplay, playing in a musical street quartet and a number of other wonderfully mundane things. In fact, the mundane normality of the ape existence is probably the best thing about the entire movie. Burton easily manages to convince us that this is a living, breathing city of apes, many of whom just go about their day to day life without affecting the plot.

This movie contains extreme violence, mild gore.

In a prison camp, British POWs are forced into labor. The bridge they build will become a symbol of service and survival to one prisoner, Colonel Nicholson, a proud perfectionist. Pitted against the warden, Colonel Saito, Nicholson will nevertheless, out of a distorted sense of duty, aid his enemy. While on the outside, as the Allies race to destroy the bridge, Nicholson must decide which will be the first casualty: his patriotism or his pride.

The Bridge on the river Kwai).

For one thing, Boulle was French, so strike one. And none of these stories had talking apes in them, so strike two. And the translation was somewhat inept, which isn’t really his fault, but I’m looking for a reason to discount this book entirely, so strike thr – oh shit! I beaned Pierre Boulle! Right in the temple! Is he hurt? Is he bleeding? Yeah, he’s bleeding. Well, fuck him. He shouldn’t have crowded the plate.
