Você já ouviu falar do Projeto Pikapika?

A idéia surgiu do grupo japonês Tochka, que montaram um stop motion com performances e imagens de pessoas que desenham no espaço com lanternas de luz colorida, sempre à noite, capturadas pelas lentes de máquinas fotográficas, criando um efeito de luz e cores que vem encantando multidões.

O sucesso é tanto que o Tochka realiza as performances seguidas, em alguns casos, por workshops ao redor do mundo.

A criatividade rendeu o Grand Prix no Festival de Curtas-Metragens de Clermont-Ferrand e uma Menção Honrosa no Festival de Animação de Ottawa. Adorei!

Today, or yesterday, one of the two days, Steve linked me to a video on youtube. What does a video have to do with photography you may ask?  The video itself is put together by many many pictures. How many? I don’t know, but all of this is done with some sort of SLR. Not a video camera. It is known as light painting/graffiti. The effect is actually quite cool, and having tried it myself, it’s much harder than it looks. Below I have put up the video on here on my blog, hopefully it works. Enjoy.

The video is by a Japanese group called “PiKAPiKA” (assuming). If you click the link, it shall take you to that blog. Being a Japanese group, guess what? the website is in Japanese, but they have a lot of videos. So maybe the language barrier isn’t that big of a problem…

Now, having seen that video, I just have to post up a picture of my own attempts at light painting. It’s from quite a while ago and is far from perfect. Maybe I shall try light painting again.

Step into the Future of Graffiti Art

With Graffiti becoming a global problem for our governments and harsher and stronger laws being put into effect, Graffiti artists are finding it tougher to express their art without facing the consequences.

This can deter a lot of artists and may see the end of Graffiti Art as we know it. But luckily a group of forward thinking artists are taking humble Graffiti to the next level in the form of Light Graffiti.

Light Graffiti is a photographic technique in which exposures are made usually at night or in a darkened room by moving a hand-held light source or by moving the camera. In many cases the light source itself does not have to appear in the image. The term also encompasses images lit from outside the frame with hand-held light sources.   

Anyone who has checked long time exposure on cameras already knows the basics of Light Graffiti writing. It´s a simple but efficient photo and animation technique, which has developed only within the last decade.

It is by no means a new thing. Pablo Picasso already worked out this technique in his own way. Picasso was photographed ‘painting’ a quick sketch in mid-air in a darkened room with a torch, and the image was composited with a shot of Pablo in a studio to create the effect of painting with light.

Using this new method, a number of graffiti artists have been tagging the impossible without being caught. How? – it’s actually not illegal for them. They’re not using paint and they are not leaving a long term, ‘hard copy’ of their artwork on public or private property. Though this form of graffiti exists in cyberspace at the moment it wont be long before we see it in art installations in our cities. 

As it turns out, time-lapse photography isn’t just for blooming flowers, skyscapes, or brake lights anymore. Tag artists are taking their ‘colour’ to an all new level.

The light can either be used to selectively illuminate parts of the subject or to ‘paint’ a picture by shining it directly into the camera lens. Light painting requires a sufficiently slow shutter speed, usually a second or more. Like night photography, it has grown in popularity since the advent of digital cameras because they allow photographers to see the results of their work immediately.

Light painting can take on the characteristics of a quick pencil sketch. Flash lights or light pens or LED ‘throwies’ can also be used to create Full Bleed images. Different colored lights can be used to project an image on the CCD.

Making a light graffiti doesn’t necessarily need to be done in a dark room or at night. Sometimes using artificial light, like LEDs and mobile phones, or through the limited sunlight beaming in a curtained room creates a shadowing effect. Using a mirror creates a double image, which adds up to a more creative result.

Light Graffiti is also known as Light Writing/ Light Painting.

Recognition – Gathering Momentum

Darklight is the first international Light Graffiti writing festival, paying tribute to this virtual graffiti and urban space art. It’s goal is to invite the most outstanding artists of this genre to Berlin for one week to hold workshops, jam-sessions and to organise the exhibition for the public.

Tenía escrita un entrada sobre unos japoneses llamados  Pikapika que juegan a hacer vídeos nocturnos donde dibujan con la luz gracias a la técnica de stop-motion. Sin embargo consiguen resultados muy estéticos pero sin ningún fondo.

Navegando un poco más he encontrado quien lo hace para expresar el movimiento o la sensación de patinar, y la verdad es que me parece mucho más interesante. lia halloran

Si bien la definición de la fotografía misma es la de fijar la imagen a través de la luz, esta técnica consiste en realizar largas exposiciones con la cámara de manera manual. No es nueva ni muchísimo menos pero cada vez se está poniendo más de moda, sobre todo en Japón. Armados con cualquier tipo de linterna y cámara de video sobre trípode, logran animaciones realmente trabajadas, con efectos y movimientos originales. Este grupo se llama Pikapika y no están quietos ni un momento.

casi nunca posteamos videos. pero hoy es domingo, son las 8am, acabamos de descubrir éste y además llevamos como dos años fascinados con las posibilidades del led. lo hicieron los weyes de pikapika, que no son nuestros bróders pero ojalá que lo sean muy pronto. uplifting. mi maestro de latín en el seminario decía que sursum corda era una invitación a alzar los corazones antes de la eucaristía. si sí, pues sursum corda.

Ryan Cashman shot his light-paint piano player in San Diego. High five to Ryan!

This was a live performance by AntiVJ Lab in Bridwell Prison, Bristol, earlier this year.

And the best I’ve found so far are Japanese crew PIKAPIKA. Unfortunately, all their most high-res work is on Revver and I’ve not cracked the embedding yet.

Langzeitbelichtung (Longtimeexposure) schimpft sich die Technik bei der die Kamera laaaange belichtet, also viele Bildinformationen aufnimmt. Da bleibt genug Zeit während dieser Aufnahme schnell ein paar Lichtquellen zu verändern. Schwer ist allerdings dabei, dass man sich vorstellen muss, was man da mit einer Taschenlampe oder einem Leuchtstab zeichnet. Hängt man dieser Bilder hintereinander, kann ein toller Film entstehen… ich glaube, dass macht denen keiner so schnell nach:

• A very impressive Robot. The appealing scripted talents of a next generation Mobile Dexterous Social Robot, described as “approximately the size of a 3-year old child” is shown in the video below. The MDS Robot was designed and built by scientists from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab – Personal Robots Group, University of Massachusetts-Amherst Laboratory for Perceptual Robotics, Xitome Design and Meka Robotics.
