1. Os exercícios queimam calorias. A quantidade de calorias queimadas depende do tipo de corpo e do nível de esforço;

2. Criando massa muscular magra, como o Pilates faz, é uma das melhores maneiras de aumentar o seu potencial de queima de calorias;

3. Pilates tonifica e modela o seu corpo;

4. Uma das melhores maneiras de parecer e sentir-se mais magro e ter uma bonita postura. O Pilates faz isso enfatizando a manutenção de um bom alinhamento corporal;

5. Pilates promove uma respiração profunda e eficiente, o que é essencial para a queima de calorias e a regeneração de tecidos;

Due to the fact that I earned credit for an internship this summer, I am only taking three classes this semester, and as such, I signed up for two gym classes at the FitRec to help fill my time. I had experimented with a few courses over the summer, Power Yoga and Pilates, and I really enjoyed them, so I was excited by the thought of taking a few this fall to help me stay in shape and keep me active. After spending a lot of time this summer trying to figure out what I wanted to take, I had finally decided on a spinning class and a step aerobics class called step training. Classes were back to back, Monday and Wednesday from 1pm to 2:45pm.

I loved them. Spinning was challenging and step was so much fun. Then my instructors stopped showing up. At first, it was no big deal, I’ve certainly had professors send in substitutes before. But then it started happening on a more regular basis and I started to get angry. How was it that I was required to be at every class, but my instructors could 1) have constant subs or 2) fail to show up altogether?

I wasn’t as upset by my spinning instructors absence as she always set us up with a great substitute. But my step instructor wouldn’t show up, wouldn’t email is that class was cancelled and wouldn’t set up an sub. I would show up at the FitRec and have no class to attend. It was extremely frustrating and a complete waste of my time.

Now, I have no step instructor. She quit. I’m not quite sure what the whole missing link is here. So much is required of students and I feel like instructors, at least at FitRec, aren’t held to the same standards. Additionally, a lot of the instructors are students and I wonder if they are at a place where they really know how to balance teaching and schoolwork.

I was really excited about my FitRec classes this semester, and now, I’m really just more disappointed.

Han vänder och kommer tillbaka, kikar in i rummet och undrar;

C ringer upp mig under dagen och berättar vad som har hänt och säger med skratt i rösten;

Thanksgiving is upon us yet again, and I’m currently at work hoping that we will soon get an email saying “LEAVE. NOW. EVERYONE. GOBBLE GOBBLE.” So far, no luck.

I was taking a look at my Thanksgiving post from last year, and I must say: not a whole lot has changed. I’m still thankful for all of that good stuff (like goat cheese and Michael Franti and not being pregnant). Yesterday in my Pilates class, while we were doing a move called “the teaser,” the instructor asked us to think only of things we were thankful for. No bad thoughts like “hot DAMN this is hard!” I thought that was kind of sweet.

This year I’ll be spending Thanksgiving here in DC with Kelsey and a couple other lovely people, and we are forgoing the traditional feast-and-family route in favor of Korean spas and fancy dinners. I’ll let you know how that goes.

While we’re at it, I’ve gotta confess: World, I am thankful for Jason Segel. Even though I’m very NOT thankful that he pulled this stunt at the Swell Season concert in LA rather than the one in DC. Asshole.

Eat lots of delicious things tomorrow, and be happy about all you’ve got going for you. Gobble gobble!

When you think about all of the treatments available for back pain, you most likely think of the usu

When you think about all of the treatments available for back pain, you most likely think of the usual treatments such as doctors, medication, acupuncture, massage, and physical therapy. But what about Pilates? There are so many people who are spending countless dollars in order to relieve their pain. When you are already in pain, stress tends to make things worse.

We are going to assume that you have the worse possible case of back pain accompanied by bulging, herniated, and slipped disks. An individual’s pain can be so bad that it causes numbing, tingling, and an inability to walk, lie down, sit, or stand without experiencing muscle spasms and agonizing pain. This sounds like a nightmare but it happens to a lot of people.

There may be doubts in your mind that you will ever find relief. It can be very difficult not to feel like you will ever achieve relief because the pain is literally unbearable. There is only so much that doctors and pain medication can do. When it is all said and done, everything comes down to how well you take care of yourself. Taking steps to relieve your pain as well as heal your body will help you to live a much happier, pain-free life.

Pilates may be considered the better treatment for back pain because it involves no medication, no long drives to the doctor, no expensive massage treatments, and no fancy acupuncture treatments. People who experience the worst pain are wonderful candidates for Pilates. The exercises are completely safe and recommended for a number of things from pain relief to weight loss.

The exercises involve lying down on a mat, watching a DVD or video, and following simple instructions on how to complete a movement. There are advanced, intermediate, and beginner ways to do each of the exercises, so everyone gets a chance to heal. You might be thinking to yourself, “If Pilates is just exercise, I can perform my own.” Pilates isn’t just any type of exercise, it is a set of movements that involves the power of the mind, deep breathing, relaxation, small movements, and balance.

It is not difficult at all to master. When you first start out, you are going to wonder if you are even doing anything at all because the movements are so minimum and the exercises are so easy. Within about two weeks, you should begin to notice that you have more strength all throughout your body. The exercises mainly target the abdominal muscles, lower back, buttock, and hip muscles, but still work to tone everything else from the legs to the arms.

Something that is very important to know about Pilates is that it helps to lengthen and straighten the spine. A weak spine cannot heal, that is why it needs more strength. Your body needs to naturally fall back into alignment so your pain isn’t as bad. Once you can get your spine back into the proper alignment, the body heals itself from there. It all starts in the lower back.

The only thing that you can do from here is give it a try. Other than that, just remember that ultimate healing comes from taking care of yourself. If you notice that you are taking an abundance of pain pills or are trying various other methods to relieve your pain, then you know that you have nothing to lose. What you will notice about Pilates is that it doesn’t make your pain worse or take a lot of time to do. It is beneficial for everyone who wants to get better.

About a year ago I was doing another 1 day gym pass with a friend and managed to get talked into an Ashtanga Yoga class. Ashtanga Yoga is fast and fluid, one move swiftly becomes another and poses aren’t really held as much as moved in and out of. By the end of it I had warmed up nicely and was feeling stretched, though nothing could prepare me for what I felt the next day. I discovered muscles I never knew I had and just about everything hurt. It was probably something I would have kept up had I been a member of the gym but unfortunately I never got to have another go.

I had a quick look at the class timetable when I joined my current gym last week in the hope they did something similar. I saw they did Pilates and so went along this morning to try it out.

I wasn’t expecting anything as rigorous as Ashtanga but I hoped for something that would help me with my stretching and challenge my core. Unfortuately I didn’t really get much of that. Going to a mid-morning class obviously attracts a fair few of the retired generation and the class seemed to be too preoccupied in catering for their needs. While we did do some leg stretches it was very cold in there and having not really had a warm up I was careful not to push too far for fear of injuring myself.

I also had a few doubts about the instructor. She seemed nice enough and I told myself off for judging her on first impressions (she was a few pounds heavier than your average gym instructor). However, those doubts returned steadily thoughout the class (eg. telling us that bicep curls work the forearm and lateral raises are the same as pressups) and I left somewhat unsure about her as a teacher.

Overall, not what I was hoping for, but I might try it again in an evening class where there might be some more people who are looking for a challenging workout.

Being a ‘new man’, one unafraid to watch The Restaurant or listen to Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing because I like it rather than because I want to persuade a woman to have sex with me, it should come as no surprise to you that I occasionally partake in a spot of Pilates.

Yes, we stick on the DVD Jade got off Amazon and clear the furniture out of the way. She’s Australian, Pilates woman is, and she has incredibly pert breasts. I cannot confirm whether this is because of Pilates or not, but she’s ugly so I can’t really be bothered to look into it. But yes, girls out there, there is the possibility that Pilates will give you pert breasts.

We lie down and she tells us to activate our fingers. I’m not sure what this is but I gamely try to activate them as best I can by sort of tensing a bit. It doesn’t seem to do much other than making me go red and is not conducive to the breathing exercises she has got us doing.

Oh yes, Pilates is a very breathy sport.

So we’re tensing and breathing and activating and she runs us through a series of toning tasks. There’s the crab and the lotus and all sorts of things, all of them designed to exert the maximum amount of pain.

Me and Jade in the crab screaming in pain and breathing heavily as the Australian woman tells us to take it deeper and rotate. What must the neighbours think? I’ve had nightmares about knocks at the door.

“Where’s the Australian dominatrix” My trembling finger points to the DVD.

My hamstrings are not supple. They are tight. Like concrete. My toes are on the horizon, unattainable. And Australian woman is not happy. She throws her legs out and tells me to follow. I can’t. I’m weeping as they tear. She tells me to go deeper. I hear them stretch and pop and rip.

And relax, she says, mocking me.

I crumple.

But no time to crumple. She is sat upright, her legs out before her. Finally. She says. Grab your ankles. So we’re sat upright holding our ankles swaying as the balance tries to find us. She looks at us. Hmmm. Extend out the right leg. Extend out the left leg. She’s still sat upright and her legs are by her ears. FUCK OFF. That’s not possible. She looks like an upturned stool. Her arse must be flat. How else is it possible? I’m swaying backwards with my legs at 30 degrees and behind me Jade screams as her legs hit 65 degrees.

Australian lady smirks. And her breasts sit like two monuments.

“Boob job” says Jade.

Yeah, bitch, I say.

We put the DVD away and spend the next two days hobbling around feeling inadequate.

And what is more manly than hobbling around feeling inadequate?

Pilates, my male friends, will reaffirm your masculinity, give licence to it. Get yourself a DVD. Push away the furniture. Make your hamstrings burn and your stomach muscles explode. Let the bitch bully you. You will never feel more like a man.

Didn’t run 10k with work running buddy Tues night as unfortunately she was ill. By the time I was back from work it was too late, so managed 3m. Aimed for 5k (just the extra .1 of 3.1m), but I got lost :S

Went out with plan of 1.55m out, and back (being negative split and faster to get home). Firstly, nice lady at the bus stop grumbled ‘wish I could run’, to which I replied ‘I wish I could run faster’. Although it raised a laugh, correct answer is actually… ‘anyone can run’. At least I looked like I was running anyway

So.. out 1.45 needed a bit more, round the block, round the block again, and again yaaaay 1.55, now back. Erm… can’t rememer the blocks I went round.. up, down, round, back.. found my way home but not the same way. 3m. Knees cranky. Ice.

Yesterday swam for an hour/2000m in an almost empty pool. Admit to a wee midway (not in the pool!) due to full sugar Red Bull – woke me up and gave me wings. Ending gym next week and need to sort public pool

Today Pilates, strengthen, strengthen, strengthen, and just ten mins on noisy stepper.

Still keeping food diary to work out carbs/protein/fats.

Got free tickets to the Running Show at Olympia this weekend. Looking forward to seeing erm…. running stuff

I danced as a child and then I quit to play sports. I came back to dance in high school when I got involved in musical theatre. Pilates came into my life in college, after dance, but I wish that would have been different!

Pilates not only strengthens the core but creates long, lean muscles that look beautiful on stage. The Pilates stance (leg turned out from the hips) is a “lower modification” of ballet’s first position.

Many ballet studios cross train with Pilates exercises to increase flexibility and core strength. Here are some tips for teaching Pilates to dancers from Sonia Rodriguez. I fond this on the Peak Pilates Blog. Check out the rest of the article!

Here are some tips from Sonia for teaching dancers:

1. Work with props, such as the Power Circle or Triad Ball. I use this to help dancers find specific connections and then take the prop away and have them create the same connection imagining the prop is still there.

2. Many times I will work with a prop throughout an entire mat session. During their next session, I have the student/dancer find the same connections as the last session, this time without the prop.

3. If you have dance experience, take the student into a short dance phrase or barre work. As I take them through the dance movements, I cue their bodies with the Pilates vocabulary. This is amazingly affective.

4. Ask the student/dancer what movements in dance they are struggling with. Then determine what the fundamental issue at hand is. This then becomes a theme you can thread throughout their session.

5. Remember that dancers want to make movements big then find control, thus Joseph Pilates frustration in working with dancers. Teach them how to work in a smaller more controlled range of motion, encouraging healthy movement patterns. Once they find control and centering, go for bigger ranges.

6. Work with the jump board on the reformer. This is a great way to teach and correct hip, knee, and foot alignment during jumps and hops. It also provides an opportunity for educating foot articulation and propulsion.

7. Don’t be fooled by a dancer’s gracefulness and ability to learn “choreography” quickly. You have to look closely and make sure that the movement is truly coming from their center and the right firing patterns are being performed.

In a time when makeup was worn mostly by prostitutes and performers, these two women transformed the way women wear makeup and think about ourselves. Even more importantly, these women blew gender roles out of the water to rock the business world. Their colourful marketing, branding and product concepts where innovative and inspiring.

This documentary set in the 1930s showcases their lives, rivalry and how they conducted business including regular yoga and Pilates practices in their day spas. They created a holistic approach to beauty and a new way to live for western women.

“It was really easy,” the actress, 22, told Usmagazine.com Saturday at the Magnificent Mile Festival of Lights event in Naperville, Il. “We were working 12 hours a day, so it didn’t leave too much time to eat.”

After her response, her publicist nudged her, but Greene didn’t seem to care about her blunt answer.

When she did eat, she chose “really healthy stuff, which was nice.”

Greene also said that training extensively for the sequel — which had the third biggest box office opening of all time — accounted for her figure in the movie.

“We had a personal trainer and then we also had fight training,” she told Us. “It was a good four hours a day of training.”

To stay in shape these days, she said she does Pilates, usually six days a week.

“I do it early in the morning. It wakes you up, and it’s kind of refreshing,” said Greene, who is headed to London in a few months to begin filming the thriller The Apparition. “And that is basically it. Sometimes cardio. I am not a big weight person because when I do weights I build muscle mass.”

The first time my clothes started to feel a bit snug, I used it (happily, I must admit) as an excuse to go shopping. New clothes! Hooray!

The second time I started feeling the pinch of too-tight jeans, I started to get a bit anxious. When was this going to stop?? I was losing my girlish figure and venturing into territories my once-thin self had never known: the land of the double-figure clothes sizes. Still, I headed out (begrudgingly, this time) for some new clothes that didn’t squeeze my ever-expanding middle or take my breath away.

By the third time my clothes stopped fitting, I’d had enough. I finally got it through my thick skull that I had to do something other than find new clothes…I had to (gasp!) find a way to lose weight.

I tried many different things and dropped a few pounds here and there but experienced no miraculous results. Until I found Pilates. Winsor Pilates 20 Minute Fat-Burning Workout, to be exact. By spending just a few days a week practicing some simple moves that got my heart pumping but were not overly difficult to perform, I quickly shed about 20 of my 30 unwanted pounds. (Side note: I also gave up my daily habit of one or two mini candy bars as an afternoon snack and upped my water intake, but otherwise didn’t change my diet.) AND I started to gain back the trim tummy I’d been so proud of in my younger days.

So if people ask me how to go about losing weight, my answer is always Pilates, Pilates, Pilates! If you practice Pilates for weight loss 2-3 times per week and throw in some cardio work (like riding a bike or running) once or twice a week, you will start to see results.

Balance is my thing. It’s been my mantra for as long as I can remember. The word pops up on

Balance is my thing. It’s been my mantra for as long as I can remember. The word pops up on my various online profiles, in conversation with friends and family, and in my head countless times during a day. So when a Pilates client asked me “What do you do the other five days of the week, you know, when you’re not here?,” I laughed and said “Finish those reps and I’ll tell you.”

I told her what I’ve been telling people for months now with varying degrees of curiosity (and sometimes trepidation) about their reaction: I teach Pilates AND I run my own marketing business. The order flips depending on who I’m speaking with and often includes only half of the equation. I elaborated that morning by saying “It’s a weird balancing act, huh?” to which my client replied “Actually, it’s kind of awesome.”

You know? It kind of is. And the fact that it’s actually working surprises the hell out of me. I followed this convoluted path – baffling some and inspiring others – and here I am, in the middle of the ultimate balancing act. Or as my friend Peter Shankman calls it, “surfing the duality.”

Peter’s an avid skydiver; he’s also a successful entrepreneur, three times over. He coined the term to describe the feeling he gets from being equally engaged in two very different worlds, with players who don’t understand why he would even want to be in the “other” world. (Thank you, Peter, for giving voice to what I’ve been feeling all these months.) You’ll have to ask him how he makes his particular duality surfing work. Here’s what I think about to make mine come together.

Embrace the duality. I spend Monday and Tuesday mornings teaching Pilates and the rest of the week with various marketing clients. By the end of my Pilates shift on Tuesday morning, I’m ready to wear business clothes again and deal with the chaos that is brand management, partnership strategy, or whatever I’m doing for my marketing clients. And come Friday evening, I’m beginning to take a deep, cleansing breath with the realization that the weekend is upon me and that I’ll spend the first two mornings of my week in a place of health and balance.

Compartmentalization is your friend. I have to access the on/off switch between the different sides of my brain at a moment’s notice and be able to shift right back. In order to do this, I put things in their respective boxes and close the lid tight until I need to open it again. Otherwise, my brain gets all muddled with details. But I do leave room for cross-pollination, which I find makes me better at both of my “jobs.”

Only the organized will survive. I love my planner. Seriously. Between juggling the needs of marketing clients, keeping up with requests from the Pilates studio for last-minute coverage and workshops, and maintaining some semblance of a social life, I’d be a wreck without a centralized place to write it all down. Yes, with pen and paper. Sometimes my iPhone just isn’t enough.

Be present. If anything can teach you to live in the moment, it’s a ongoing and dramatic switch in professional pursuits during the course of your day or week. The present is sacred. Anything other than the moment is a distraction.

Never lose sight of the why. For the freedom of being my own boss even if I’m momentarily answerable to my clients. For the flexibility of choosing when and where I want to work and how long I’ll work there. For the wonderfully balanced payoff that comes from living what some might view as an unbalanced and chaotic lifestyle. I cling to my reasons for living this lifestyle as if they were my true north, because some days it still feels like work even though I love what I’m doing.

What about you other surfers out there? How do you keep it all together?
