The Democratic defections are starting to pile up in advance of a vote scheduled for tomorrow on sweeping health reform efforts. (That schedule could slip to Sunday or beyond, if the votes aren’t there.)

According to the National Republican Congressional Committee — which, of course, has an interest in watching this vote particularly closely — 15 House Democrats and counting are saying publicly that they’ll oppose the measure when it reaches a vote.

Democrats can afford only 40 such defections to squeak the bill through. They’d prefer to win with room to spare.

The Democrats who’ve said — either in interviews or press releases — that they’re opposing the bill include: Rep. Travis Childers (Miss.); Rep. John Adler (N.J.); Rep. Walt Minnick (Idaho); Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (S.Dak.); Rep. Suzanne Kosmas (Fla.); Rep. Frank Kratovil (Md.); Rep. Larry Kissell (N.C.); Rep. Bart Gordon (Tenn.); Rep. Dan Boren (Okla.); Rep. Jim Matheson (Utah); Rep. Michael McMahon (N.Y.); Rep. John Tanner (Tenn.); Rep. Brian Baird (Wash.); Rep. Harry Teague (N.M.); and Rep. Collin Peterson (Minn.).

But — keeping in mind that many members of Congress prefer to announce their intentions with their votes, not press releases — the defections suggest that reaching 218 remains a serious challenge for Democrats on the eve of the vote.

“If this bill is the political winner Nancy Pelosi claims it is, then why are Democrats fighting over who gets to vote against it?” NRCC spokesman Ken Spain said in a statement.

Today was an over all good day. A happy day. An eventful day. A family day.

This morning I went to a photography class…it was nice to actually GO to school

Drew took the kids to the library for TRAIN day…they had so much fun and couldn’t wait to show me thier crafts.

Drew also started the tedious task of cleaning the garage…we have to get the baby stuff handed off.

THEN…I decided Drew’s vacation has been wasted on sickness and, with coughs still going strong, I decided we needed to do some FUN stuff for us all. We headed to the City Museum.

No, I did not bring my camera. It wouldn’t have survived the sliding, climbing, crawling, squeezing into tight places, clay molding, painting, decoupaging, running, jumping, ball throwing, and dancing with my husband through the “ball room.” We had so much FUN! I wish I could fly all my friends and their kids out here to share this place with. It’s a great place to reconnect with your inner child.

We have been having FANTABULOUS weather…it reached 80 degrees today and 75 yesterday. The leaves have dried out from all the rain and Drew and Kevin raked up an enormous pile of leaves for the kids to romp in. Drew and I romped too!

Connor was fever free for about 4 hours. I could tell he still wasn’t feeling his best. But, he still had a chance to get fresh air and enjoy himself. He is such a CHAMP!

Jessie has been jumping in the leaves every chance she gets. She informs us (the parents…or any adult standing around) to rake the leaves back up. This is definately GREAT entertainment.

Even Vito (the new addition to our neighborhood) shyly joined in on the fun. Okay, he really didn’t join in. I think he was just really curious on why all the leaves were being piled up and he was trying to check out what the fuss was about. He really is a beautiful dog and so, so sweet. I know Kevin and April make great PUPPY parents.

I love fall. I love the crunch of the leaves and the rustling sounds they make as the wind blows them around. I love how it’s not too hot to enjoy the outside and not to cold (usually) either. I love how the kids giggles sound better. Maybe because I know these little fresh air giggles from playing outside for hours in the warm sun are limited. I love how the smells I fill my house with all year long, FIT with the season. I love fall and I had the best day today with my family and the weather couldn’t have been any better. I think God made today special for me.

The rules of Heraldry prohibit placing a color on a color, a metal upon a metal or, a fur upon a fur. There is one well known exception to the rule about metals and this is on the well known arms for the kingdom of Jerusalem, where the gold cross and crosses are placed on a silver field. On the basis of these three materials, Color, Metal and fur all coats of arms are created. The items placed on the field are called charges. The original shields were very simple with few charges as there were very few knights and nobleman that had arms. However as Coats of Arms became more widespread the need to differentiate arms led to the addition of more and more charges to the shield.

The earliest charges were such things as bends ( diagonal lines), Chevrons (inverted v’s), chiefs (band across top of shield), piles ( v shape), fesses (horizontal lines) and crosses. These charges would naturally suggest themselves to the early users. For example, Azure a bend argent ( blue background with a silver diagonal line). This was a very easy design for a coat of arms. Generally speaking the simpler a coat of arms is the further back it can be dated. Many writers have asserted that every coat of arms must consist of at least the field and a charge, however there are a number of exceptions to this, The Brittany arms which are simply “Ermine”.

Si ca sa fie dracul ghem, la spectacolul sinistru al Geaninei Carbunariu, am primit un formular de completat care sonda parerile spectatorilor despre FNT. Un sondaj prost facut, plin de greseli, inutil si pe care, la finalul spectacolului, nu l-a mai colectat nimeni.

Este jenant sa faci o grava confuzie intre scenarist si scenograf la un asemenea eveniment cu pretentii.

Pentru ca FNT a ramas doar cu pretentia ca in rest… Prieteni, pupici, obligatii, pile, rufe spalate, dispute aplanate, invidii alintate si nimic de calitate, nimic TEATRU.

Daca ajungi dupa mai mult de jumatate din festival sa zici ca un spectacol facut in 1992 a fost cel mai bun, e grav. Teatrul a stagnat 17 ani sau mafia a reusit sa omoare orice elan.

Ecolight ha presentato a Rimini il nuovo libro di Paolo Pipere: “Le Apparecchiature Elettriche ed Elettroniche, le Pile e gli Accumulatori”, vademecum per comprendere le norme e migliorare la gestione dei rifiuti Una guida aggiornata con le ultime evoluzioni, indicazioni operative e di gestione in tema di apparecchiature elettriche ed elettroniche, Raee, pile e accumulatori. È questo il libro “Le Apparecchiature Elettriche ed Elettroniche, le Pile e gli Accumulatori” (Hyper Edizioni) che Paolo Pipere, coordinatore del Master in Diritto e Gestione dell’Ambiente de “Il Sole 24 Ore”, ha dato alle stampe. Un vademecum che il consorzio Ecolight, sistema collettivo leader nella gestione di raee e pile e punto di riferimento per la grande distribuzione organizzata, ha deciso di presentare e sponsorizzare. «Nell’ottica di dare un contributo significativo alla tutela dell’ambiente, Ecolight ha voluto promuovere questo testo quale strumento per affrontare e comprendere le normative che regolano l’attività dei sistemi collettivi e le responsabilità attribuite ai produttori e ai rivenditori -ha detto il presidente di Ecolight, Walter Camarda, introducendo la serata al National Hotel di Rimini- Prescrizioni complesse che Ecolight si è prefisso di semplificare attraverso il proprio servizio di gestione di raee e pile esauste, per andare incontro alle esigenze delle aziende».  Le sfide all’orizzonte non mancano. Innanzitutto sul fronte dei raee: nei soli primi otto mesi del 2009 la raccolta è stata di oltre 116mila tonnellate, contro le 65mila del 2008.
Sulla raccolta delle pile e degli accumulatori esausti, dove sono già stati previsti, per le pile portatili, dei paletti da raggiungere (il 25% dell’immesso entro il 2012), il decreto entrato in vigore il 26 settembre scorso, non è ancora operativo. «Nel decreto 188/2008 sui rifiuti di pile e accumulatori -ha continuato Pipere- si è affrontato con decisione il problema dell’impossibilità di rilasciare ai commercianti l’autorizzazione ad esercitare l’attività di “messa in riserva” o di “deposito preliminare” di rifiuti. Non si sono previste però, anche in questo caso, quelle semplificazioni degli adempimenti legati al trasporto e alla detenzione di rifiuti pericolosi, indispensabili per conseguire gli obiettivi di raccolta differenziata, recupero e smaltimento sicuro previsti dalle Direttive europee».
Ecolight – Costituito nel 2004, è uno dei maggiori sistemi collettivi per la gestione dei Raee, delle Pile e degli Accumulatori. Il consorzio Ecolight, che raccoglie oltre 1.100 aziende, è il terzo a livello nazionale per quantità di immesso e il primo per numero di consorziati. È stato inoltre il primo sistema collettivo in Italia ad avere le certificazioni di qualità ISO 9001 e ISO 14001. Rappresentando più del 90 per cento del settore, è punto di riferimento per la grande distribuzione (Gdo) e per i produttori di apparecchi di illuminazione. My neighbor warned this might happen.  I’ve been so busy tossing everything into my compost pile, planning for my next growing season, I didn’t pay attention to what was growing in it this season.  A tomato plant!  I knew right away what it was, because there’s one thing about tomato plants and that is – they are aromatic.  I’m no “olfactologist,” but I can tell a tomato plant when I smell one - it’s a distinct fragrance.  

And I’m excited!  Another experiment in the making – woohoo!  But due to the fact that I yanked the thing out of my compost pile like the intrusive weed that I mistook it for, my expectations are somewhat dimmed.  Tomato plants are not known for their transplanting capability.  And while I have a few in my garden disproving that notion, this one might not survive, as its roots were fairly ripped.  And torn.  (I can be fairly aggressive when there’s work to be done.)

But looking on the bright side of the compost pile, it might just be the stimulation this little guy needs to get busy and get growing.  It’s already day two, and he hasn’t shown signs of stress, yet!  Give him time, my husband says.  Give him time…

    I had an okay week. Wednsday I had a peer court trial. I’m not supposed to be saying this about peer court, but was so much fun!! The girl who sat in front of me sneezed so funny xD  Me and Ilianna made an unbreakable vow that we wouldn’t giggle or make each other laugh. We’re like zombies now.

      Thurday, I went to Valeria’s house with Dante to bake a cake for Franky, cause Thurday was his birthday. We experimented with the cake. We added tons of sprinkles and some chocolate icing to the batter, but it came out really good. We put chocolate icing on it and wrote “RIOT!” on it with Skittles.

       On Friday, we gave Franky his cake. I had a math test and I’m pretty sure I got a C+ or lower on it. I wanted to go to McDonald’s with Ilianna, Ana, Kerri, Dahlia, Adrian, and a few more people I think but my mom said no. But later, I went to watch “Where the Wild Things Are” with Kerri, Franky, Dante, and Dahlia. The movie wasn’t as good as I expected it to be. Then, we went to Applebee’s. We had like $60 all together and we bought lots of buffalo wings and fries. And water because it was free. Franky got a free sunday because it really was his birthday. This other time we went to Applebee’s, someone said it was his birthday, but it really wasn’t. It was soo funny.  The waitress was awesome Then, we walked back to the movies and started wetting ourselves with the sprinklers that were outside. And we pretended to be Wild Things. Finally, Dante’s parents gave all of us a ride home. It was so much fun

This time on Friday!

Photography is my hobby.  I have my boyfriend hooked now, too.  While I introduced him to SLR photography, he introduced us both to urban exploring.

Basically you go into abandoned buildings and take photos of everything, hoping the whole time that you won’t get caught.  You don’t break anything or paint anything, but from my experience, there’s plenty of that to photograph too.

We stumbled into our first urban exploration by accident.  Driving through Mineral Wells, we stopped by the Baker Hotel and ended up joining in a four hour venture through the place.  Lots of fun.  Stupid, but fun.  If you go, take a respirator.  I coughed for three days.  Gross.   (I have heard that they keep it very secure now.  Good luck, and be careful!  Those elevator shafts go a looong way down).

Our next trip was to a deserted Army Hospital.  That trip was disappointing.  The location looked like it was used as a Goodwill or a huge garage sale.  No original items were there, which is what we wanted to photograph (no, not to take.  Then we would be arrested if caught, fo’ sho’)

Within the heap were bicycles!  Which leads me to Bike Friday.  I’ll post photos from the Baker and Army Hospital at another time.  I need to get to transcribing interviews that I’ve put off for way too long.

Tomorrow morning I’m covering a Susan G Komen race.  Time permitting, I’ll take some pictures of pink pink pink and post them.

Istorija čovečanstva pokazaće da su barem dva velika filozofa provela svoje poslednje sate života razmišljajući o piletu. Ovu značajnu istorijsku analizu započećemo sa primerom koji vrlo dobro ilustruje fatalnost ekskluzivnog empirijskog pristupa u naučnim istraživanjima. Leta gospodnjeg 1626. zadesio se vrlo hladan i još uvek snežni aprilski dan. Veliki engleski um Ser Frensis Bejkon putovao je svojim kočijama zamišljeno posmatrajući snegom obavijen krajolik koji se nazirao kroz prozore. Repetitivno truckanje prekinula je ideja koja će obeležiti poslednje dane ovog čuvenog Britanca. Filozofu je palo na pamet kako bi svežina pilećeg mesa mogla biti produžena ako bi pile umesto nadevom napunio snegom. Kako biografi beleže, kočije su se zaustavile ispred lokalne pijace, Ser Frensis je izašao i lično kupio kokošku, ubio je svojim rukama te napunio snegom. Eksperiment se još nije ni pretvorio u neuspeh a Bejkon je već ležao na zemlji žaleći se na neizdržive bolove i hladnu groznicu koja mu je protresala organizam. Previše slab da se vrati kući, odnešen je u kuću Lorda Arandela, gde je i izdahnuo 9. aprila, tačno nedelju dana nakon epizode sa piletom. Bejkonovi biografi saglasni su oko toga da na ovu tragikomičnu epizodu treba gledati kao na njegovu spremnost da sopstveni život žrtvuje naučnom angažmanu. Bilo je neumesno tvrditi da je takav jedan autoritet i savetnik kralja presudio sebi sa piletom punim snega u ruci.

Da ovo nije tek usamljeni slučaj čoveka koji je u poslednjem času otvorio problem živine, potkrepićemo našim sledećim primerom. Sokrat. Za one koji nisu upoznati, Sokrat je bio optužen da kvari atinsku omladinu, kao i da ne odaje počast grčkim bogovima. Ta nezgoda ga je koštala slobode. Završio je u zatvoru, gde je čekao da bude pogubljen. Pošto se ispričao sa svojim učenicima, povukao se u ćeliju gde je odlučio da svoje poslednje sate provede u samoći. Zamislite scenu: prašnjava ćelija, ustajali vazduh i mali debeli čovečuljak sedi razočaran. Prava porodična atmosfera… Nikada nećemo znati o čemu je razmišljao atinski filozof dok je kroz majušne prozore svoje ćelije posmatrao polis, ali možemo pretpostaviti da bi tadašnja Atina čuvenom kralju cinizma u svetlu novonastalog razočaranja mogla delovati kao jedan ogroman kokošinjac. Ovo tvrdim zato što su pouzdana istraživanja pokazala da se u Atini Sokratovog vremena blizu 100,000 stanovnika tiskalo na prostoru ne većem od 2,6km². Svetlost na ovaj depresivni završetak baciće jedna anegdota o kojoj nam piše Platon u “Fedonu”. U pitanju je Sokratova smrt. Filozof je odlučio da svoj život okonča tako što će ispiti otrov i staviti povez preko glave. Popio je fatalni napitak, seo mirno i u momentu se setio da ima još nešto da kaže svojim učenicima. Smakao je povez sa glave i već pomalo ošamućen otrovom izustio sledeće reči: “Kritone, dugujemo jednog petla Asklepiju; nemoj zaboraviti da mu nadoknadiš dug”. Možemo zamisliti razočaranje mladog Kritona koji je od učitelja za kraj očekivao reči vrhunske prosvećenosti.

Famozna smrt Frensisa Bejkona je od strane njegovih biografa tumačena kao hrabrost velikog filozofa koji žrtvuje sopstveni život nauci. Sokratove su, pak, poslednje reči predmet viševekovne rasprave, utoliko što je Asklepije kojem je Sokrat “dugovao petla”, zapravo grčki bog medicine. Zbog toga ostaje nejasno da li je Sokratov petao bio posledica bunila usled teške intoksikacije, ili je možda želeo da ukaže kako bi valjalo prineti žrtvu velikom bogu, mali znak pažnje u vidu zahvalnosti za efikasne otrove i lekove kojima je zadužio čoveka.

Ljudi kažu da nam život prolazi pred očima dok umiremo. Da li se taj niz završava komadom živine? Možda nam niko o tome nije ni pričao, jer je i sam ostajao zbunjen pred prizorom pileta u momentu kada je trebao da ugleda tunel sa svetlom na kraju, zlatnu kapiju, cveće ili livadu punu rođaka… Veliki ljudi bi ostajali nemi pred takvim jednim prizorom. Možemo da zamislimo Nikolu Teslu koji zaključan u apartmanu Njujorškog hotela, odbrojava svoje poslednje sate grčevito stiskajući svoje zlatno jaje… Šta god da je odgovor, ostaje mogućnost da je u pitanju jedna od onih enigmi koje nas uporno kljucaju, ali se ipak razrešavaju pred kraj.
