Below is a proposal that I am submitting to the Stevens Point Wisconsin Sculpture Park. Title: Major

Below is a proposal that I am submitting to the Stevens Point Wisconsin Sculpture Park.

Title: Major Taylor Tribute

100yards, x 5 yards ( approx)

Bicycle rims, paint, mirrors, steel poles

I am a former Stevens Point resident now residing in the artist´s neighborhood of Pilsen in Chicago, IL. I live in a birght an colorful artist´s community which is one of the more racially diverse neighborhoods in Chicago. The streets are lined with murals and walking down the street and seeing all of theses colorful murals inspires me a great deal.

Recently I became a member of the biking culture that has only gotten more popular over the past few years. Immediately I began to miss Stevens Point, know for its many bike trails that connect throughout the city. Now, drawn to reading more books and articles on biking I discovered the life and accomplishments of Major Taylor.

Major Taylor, an “unsung hero” to say the least. Myself being an African American and considering myself pretty knowledgeable of African American history had never even heard of him. I had no idea that he ever exsisted, nor that he was the was the first black international sports superstar and had also spent his last few years here in Chicago. African American history is simply American history and should not be an optional class in our educational system. As an artist I feel that it is my duty not only to tell my story but to help to tell the stories of others as well.

I am proposing a sculpture in tribute to Major Taylor and as an inspiration for bikers and non-bikers everywhere. Major Taylor finnished a mile long race in 1:19 and fought Jim Crow laws and predjuice throughout his career. The scuplture consists of used bicycle rims that will be painted various bright colors to symbolize racial harmony. I will call upon the citizens of both Stevens Point and Chicago to donate the rims, I want people to be a part of the process in this tribute.

The rims will then be mounted to steel poles of varying heights which will be inserted into the ground and mirror shards will be attached to the edges of the rims. The spokes will be mounted with scrap metal so that the wheels turn in the wind creating a beautiful light show to symbolize hope and determination.

This is a site specific sculpture and should be 100 yards long, to sympbolize the 1 mile that Major Taylor biked in one of his most famous races at a speed of 45 mph. Patrons could race from the begining to the end of the sculpture and multiply their time by 17.6 to see how they would compare to Major Taylor. This length and formula can be adjusted to suit the space if needed. I have attached a sketch of how the ”pinwheels” would look like along a trail, however the number would depend on the amount of support I receive from the citizens of both cities.

I am not actually a sculptor but a photographer combining fashion and fine art in my commerical work. Recently I photographed some models for a designer and used my Pilsen neighborhood as a backdrop. I have attached some of those images so that you may see my color inspiration for the sculpture as well.

I haven’t gone to the 2nd Friday’s art walks for the past few months but now that my mom is visiting from out of town, my sister and I decided to take her there. Go eat some dinner in the neighborhood then walk around and take a look at some weird and expensive art…luckily not all of the art is weird and expensive. Also note that this last sentence is coming from someone who is not very insightful and would rather spend money on things other than art.

If you have no idea what 2nd Friday’s is, there are a bunch of art galleries centered around 18th and Halsted Streets in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. This group of art galleries and shops is formally named the Chicago Arts District. Once a month, all of these art galleries open their doors to the public and people walk in and out of them looking at the artists’ pieces. Plus, there’s usually wine, beer, and snacks in each gallery…they accept donations for them so don’t be cheap.

Halloween may last for just one day, but Chicagoween lasts at least a week! For the next seven days, free fun includes all sorts of fun with skulls, skeletons and altars. And, just to shake things up a bit, there’s some fish, butterflies and a golem thrown in for good measure. Enjoy!

Sunday, November 1

Happy anniversary Notebaert Nature Museum! In celebration of the Museum’s 10th anniversary, admission is free. From critter cams that show you the world through the eyes of a great white shark, to a kitty cam that will open your eyes to your feline’s perspective, the Notebaert Nature Museum will have you seeing a whole new world. Make sure to adopt a butterfly while you are there. The museum is open from 10AM to 5PM.

Monday, November 2

Have you ever seen a mandarin fish? Well, have you? If you have, then you’ll be mighty pleased that you can see one for FREE today at the Shedd Aquarium. And if you have no clue what a mandarin fish is? Well then, clear your Monday schedule so you can stare in awe at it’s magnificence. The Shedd Aquarium is open from 9AM to 5PM.

Tuesday, November 3

Crystals, sugar and skulls, who would have ever thought to combine the three? Navy Pier, that’s who! Celebrate El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in the Crystal Garden, check out some traditional artists, and decorate sugar skulls at this sweetly ghoulish all-ages event. Hours are from 11AM to 5PM.

Wednesday, November 4

Still grieving the end of the World Music Fest? Well, turn that frown upside down at World Music Wednesday at The Old Town School of Folk Music. This Wednesday, Israeli Yasmin Levy will wow you with her critically acclaimed Ladino sounds. Her performance begins at 8:30PM, and while this is a free event, a $5 donation is suggested.

Thursday, November 5

Continue enjoying the Day of the Dead at the National Museum of Mexican Art, located in the lovely Pilsen neighborhood. The Museum’s 23rd annual Day of the Dead exhibition includes ofrenda (altars) created by Arturo Velasquez Sr. and Sandra Cisneros, as well as works from more than 20 artists. The Museum is open from 10AM to 5PM.

Friday, November 6

If the Day of the Dead festivities haven’t convinced you that Chicagoween is a season, not a day, here’s further proof: The Chicago Cultural Center will be screening The Golem, a silent film from the 1920s. A golem, by the way, is a legendary creature that can save you by destroying your enemies… if you can control it. The film begins at 7PM.

Saturday, November 7

Wind down the week with a book and a view – a view of some fantabulous art, that is. The Harold Washington Library Center showcases the city’s art collection of over 50 works. It is the largest public art display in Chicago, and, fittingly, it is housed in one of the most beautiful buildings downtown. And… the collection is protected by gargoyles. On Saturday, the Library Center is open from 9AM to 5PM.

another reason why i run:

it clears my mind.

whether solo or with a running partner, it gives me a chance to let my mind wander and think on all the things i’ve been to busy to think about. it can be work, friends, family, relationships, or anything. sometimes my mind is sharpest when i run. i find ingenious solutions to problems. harvey and i created the concept for this blog while running. we concoct recipes for everything from t-shirts to revolutions. we half-joke about holding running-meetings. as opposed to a lunch meeting, where you meet over lunch, we would meet with people over a run. our minds would be sharp!

sometimes i zone out and just enjoy the feel of my muscles working, gliding over the city streets. i learn new things about my neighborhood, Pilsen, and where ever else we run. sometimes i run to put things in perspective. did i have a big problem today? go for a run and with each step, the problem becomes smaller and smaller, until i know i can deal with it.

what do you think about when you run?

just last week, a woman was killed in a hit-and-run accident in my neighborhood, pilsen.

a few months ago, i was hit by a car in pilsen, just blocks from my house. i was running and crossing the street in a crosswalk at a stop sign. the driver of the car did not stop for the stop sign and hit me. instinctively i pushed down on the hood of the car as it hit me. i ended up on top of the hood, the car and i both in the middle of the intersection. i was fine, but shocked that someone would drive a vehicle so recklessly.

everyone, be careful out there. drivers are distracted, tired, stressed. and you are precious. wear bright colors, stop at all intersections, wait for the walk signal, avoid running in the dark.

what else can you do?

join a local pedestrian advocacy group

get rid of your car, in exchange for your feet, bike, public transit options or car share co-op

run with an emergency ID bracelet

advocate for better, greener urban planning. chicago city council is proposing an increase in bus and train fare and a decrease in buses and hours. this would likely increase the number of cars on the road.

what is your city doing to get cars off the road? how have you gotten involved?

You’d think we might start a blog about running, politics, and food, with a picture of ourselves engaged in any, possibly all, of the aforesaid. Instead, a glimpse of Chicago. It’s where we live, run, work, and play. Where our politics follows our feet: into the street. And over bridges, through alleys, and across thoroughfares, under viaducts, and over parks, passing through Pilsen, and Bridgeport, Little Italy and Lake Shore Drive. Dawn breaks, and we are everywhere public. At morning we run.

Join us on the journey! Tell us about your town, about your run, about health, commitment, and leading a good life. We’re simply on your left.

Beber e comer, papear e fumar, jogar e contar anedotas.

cervejas: dois rótulos de      dunkel, dois rótulos de pilsen, uma cerveja tradicional tcheca, uma oaken,      uma weiss, uma red ale e uma pale ale;

acepipes: um pacote de      cebolitos, um de doritos, um queijo não identificado (roubado da geladeira      da casa do Guilherme) e um pacote de batata frita sensações;

doces: um pote de jujubas      (que me fez vomitar no fim da noite);

entretenimento: um tabuleiro      de War Rome;

música: um iPod carregadinho      de rock ‘n roll, blues, country etc;

Generally all but the barrel can be purchased at McLendon Hardware, Lowe’s, or Home Depot.

The barrel should be food clean with a removable lid for cleaning and assembling. Barrels come in various sizes with the most common being 60 gallons. For a heavy duty plastic barrel like these, try Walt at Milton General Supply at (253) 922-0897 or me, Dan Borba at (253) 272-8173 or email at naturalrainwater@yahoo.com. Something as thin as a Rubbermaid trash can might work but not quite as well. Some local hardware stores may occasionally carry good barrels.

Clean and rinse your food clean container with a mild soap and water (rainwater if you’ve got any yet)

Drill a 1″ hole with your hole saw or drill bit, just off the bottom of the container for the spigot assembly. I put mine as low as possible to maximize easy water use. It’s designed to be used with a stand. I use four cinder blocks. Note: If you are unable to reach down to the inside bottom of the barrel, you might want to use a 15/16″ bit and put the washer on the outside of the barrel.

Drill a 1″ hole an inch or so below the rim for your overflow valve assembly. This hole can go anywhere around the barrel at that latitude. Keep in mind: don’t put it too close to the top (overflow) or too low (lose water storage). I recommend you put the hole an inch/inch ½ from the lid. Please note: if you’ve got a 2,000 square feet roof and those large downspouts, you may want to get a larger overflow valve.

Use that 1″ bit to drill a dozen or so holes in the lid. Rainwater will filter through meshscreen then through holes into barrel.

Take utility knife to clean scraps around holes.

Wrap the barrel end of the spigot three times around with Teflon tape and then screw in the spigot squarely. It should go by hand.

Take the rubber washer and glue the surface of one side with a stong glue and reach into the barrel and work it over the threads. Flush with the barrel.

Screw on the locknut and finish tightening by turning the spigot while holding the locknut with a wrench or needle nose pliers. You may need a second person to turn while you hold or vice versa). Authors note: I love needle nose pliers!

Wrap the longer end of the overflow valve with Teflon tape three times and then screw it into the overflow hole by hand or by using a wrench or pliers if necessary. The outside male threads should be able to connect with a standard size hose to divert the overflow.

Repeat #7

Screw on the locknut as far as possible by hand, then hold locknut while tightening overflow valve with pliers/wrench until it flies out of your hand or is very tight.

Take a tube of all-purpose silicone “goop” and apply a bead where overflow valve meets the outside of the barrel. Note: I do this as an added sealant. It may not even be necessary.

Take a tube of all-purpose silicone “goop” and apply where the spigot meets the barrel. Follow drying time directions from the silicone tube.

Trace the outline of the lid on a mesh fiberglass screen and then cut it out. Screw on, if necessary, or just tighten ring around cap to secure. This screen is designed to keep mosquitoes out.

Finally, take a rag and some cheap vegetable oil, and apply it to the scratched areas of the barrel. It really shines it up

Now, you’re ready to install!

Don’t worry. If you make a hole for the spigot and overflow valve, you’re most of the way there.

ONDE? COMO? QUANTO?
