Joining a Community of Bloggers

In early November, I became an active member of the Blog Engage Community and it has been an amazing journey and an extremely rewarding experience. This image represents a small sampling of the bloggers that I’ve networked with since joining Blog Engage.

I was somewhat timid in my initial approach because I’d heard talk that it is not a good idea to join a lot of blog directories. You know, everyone is afraid of the big, bad, wolf known as Google and what might happen to you if you don’t follow every rule they make to a “T”.  Yet, for every article that talks about not submitting your blog with too many directories, I find another that says directory submissions are the best thing since sliced bread.  So I have to go with my gut, forget all about Google’s rules, and just “do me“.

Building a Social Network at Blog Engage

I looked around the Blog Engage site and right away I noticed something unique. I quickly caught on to the the fact that BE doesn’t look or feel at all like a directory but more like a place to hang out and rub shoulders with some of the finest bloggers on the planet!

Soon, I began to feel increasingly comfortable in my new BE skin and I started to submit, vote, comment, interact, follow, share, laugh, and tweet up a storm with my new found blogging friends. Oh, and you probably know already that I created two how-to videos for newcomers to the BE site.

Here’s a summary of my Blog Engage activity for the month of November:

• Joined on 11/2/09

• Read, voted on, and very often left comments for over 125 articles from other bloggers
• Did my first guest interview with Karen from Blazing Minds Latest Blogger Interview with Ileane from Ms. Ileane Speaks (aired on Dec. 3rd)
• Wrote a review of Blog Engage on Shvoong (please rate the review)
• My blog was featured in a post on Freeman Legacy LLC
• Received my first Alexa review from Ms. Freeman
• Wrote my first Alexa review for Freeman Legacy LLC
• My blog was featured in a post by Jimi Jones in The Online Business Blog
• Mentioned in Share the love, who’s talking about Blog Engage
• Listed in Coolest articles on the week form the Blog Engage community
• Listed in Weekly Round Up – BlogEngage, iTunes, Google Wave
• Received comments, tweets, retweets, stumbles, backlinks, trackbacks and pingbacks like never before
• Created a Blog Engage Twitter List http://twitter.com/Ileane/blogengage

There is one post that I submitted to Blog Engage that did not do as well as I expected in gaining votes. Do Twitter Backgrounds Attract New Followers? hasn’t received enough votes to be published yet, but I am still hopeful that it will.

If you are familiar with ‘DC++’, you should know what ‘Strong DC++’ is. Unlike ‘DC++’, ‘Strong DC++’ is a file sharing client application, which can download files from multiple alternate sources. Thus, if you want to DOWNLOAD, from a hub, a file that more users have, this program will find those users based on a TTH root. This reduces the time needed to DOWNLOAD the file. If you need a file quickly, I think this is the right choice. Among other things, you can chat with users from a hub in a private or main chat. Two weeks have past, since I attended the Writer’s Digest Conference and emerged myself into the world of the Web and Internet. Before the conference, my computer experience consisted of typing my stories in Microsoft word, searching Goggle, typing a couple of characters on Twitter and posting photos and messages to my family and friends on Facebook. Then like Neo in the Matrix movie, because I wanted to know more about the subtle energies of the world, I swallowed the red pill and emerged into a world of feeds, pingbacks, plug-ins and Html.  It didn’t stop there. I had to figure how to use Google Desktop, manage iphone apps,  record podcasts and plan a virtual book tour for my books.

Afriend asked me, “Why do you need to know all of those things for marketing?” My answer was simple. ” Social media is more than about marketing; it’s revolutionizing the way we interact in the world. Whether we like it or not the world is going digital. And this baby boomer doesn’t plan to be left behind.”  My next step into the world of social media was to determine my brand.  For me this was a real struggle, because I ‘m a writer, numerologist and spiritual advisor. I had to narrow it down.

At the Social Media Session of the recent October Capital Bookfest in Largo, Maryland, sponsored by Kwame Alexander, Donna Hill, an author and one of the presenters said, “Your brand is that idea that is always with you no matter what kind of books you write or what you do.” She had no more uttered the words, when this thought flowed through my consciousness– everything you write, say, and do is about spiritual truth and inspiring others.  Yeah, I wanted to jump up and shout out–”I know my brand.”  But I sat there quietly as million of thoughts ran through my mind. But don’t worry, I guarantee you’ll soon find out what they are.

Gurus is fortunate enough to lend a hand by creating a Video for Leslie Reynolds Benns. I have worked with Leslie at the Agape Church in SLC and once again have an opportunity to support Leslie in her campaign to be elected to SL Council District 1.

I find Leslie to be a strong advocate for all that is good, fair, and heart felt. Leslie will not let go of a vision or an opportunity to make a difference for important issues for our community of Salt Lake City. • ran a successful anti-litter campaign, purchasing, with grants from the city, stone/rock garbage cans with posters in English and Spanish.

• began a bi-lingual four-page newsletter

• instituted our Annual Night Out Against Crime, still serving as co-chair, with 500 diverse residents in attendance

• instituted a beautification award with a $50 gift certificate from Sutherlands

• established blinking speed signs on Independence and Starcrest

• established No Parking signs in the neighborhood, ridding it of vision-blocking trucks, and also on Redwood Road, ridding it of the Used-Car-Lot appearance from the accumulation of cars for sale

• is CERT (Certified Emergency Response Team) trained and served as Coordinator for Emergency Preparedness

• served on the planning committee for the Northwest Quadrant Master plan, west of the airport

• was an ad hoc member of the Mayor’s initial gang forum

• advocated strongly for the now approved TRAX alignment
