This is an image from my first foll of a matchbox pinhole.  I overexposed most of them.  Lesson learned.

I got many enquiries about how the turret assembly is to be installed on their 8banners pinhole cameras. So, I piece together some instructions in images for easy reference for all who have problem understanding the notes I send you all via email. I think in such case, it’s always “A picture paints a thousand words!”

I have been meaning to upload this but didn’t know where to find it but anyways this was done on induction week at Uni…This a photo taken using a beer can. This was my first time doing this type of work before and I am proud of it. It was one of my first exercise at Uni and I did enjoy doing.

I made a pinhole camera and after a test with  3 old agfa 100 films i got only 6 shots, I suck

Good news! My binocular pinhole camera (which should actually be called a stereoscopic pinhole camera) was a surprising success and produced paper negatives which I contact printed into decent prints.  The exposure of my camera was 10 minutes in a fluorescent light lit room. The prints also looked three dimensional when viewed in the viewing apparatus.

The prints are fairly blurry, but I am just assuming that it is because the holes are to big or something.

Anyway…. here are some prints.

La fotografia stenopeica è un esercizio tecnico e un allenamento della visione. La possibilità di costruire, con pochi accorgimenti, un apparecchio fotografico funzionante, senza il bisogno di lenti, e di utilizzarlo per realizzare immagini fotografiche su carta o su pellicola, è la concretizzazione di tale visione.

La camera a foro stenopeico è l’applicazione di una tecnica antica, che si presta a diversi livelli di sperimentazione. Il più elementare permette di utilizzare una qualunque scatola a tenuta di luce, con una fessura proporzionata alla grandezza dell’apparecchio, come una macchina fotografica primordiale. Il percorso della luce, il calcolo dell’esposizione, quell’equilibrismo tra luminosità, tempo di posa, diaframma e sensibilità del materiale, oltre ad essere nozioni tecniche, diventano strumenti da orchestrare per fissare un’immagine del mondo che i nostri occhi frettolosi difficilmente sono in grado di trattenere, o di vedere.

Katie Cooke, an Edinburgh-based photographer who specialises in the more difficult aspects of the art, is selling a series of her prints to fund the next stage of her education.

Katie renounced digital photography some time ago, preferring the more contemplative process of making images using a tripod-mounted large-format film camera – with or without a lens. And over the past year she has been concentrating on the wet-plate collodion process, which involves adding egg-white, collodion and silver salts, layer by layer, to a sheet of glass, and using this to make her negative instead of conventional, ‘modern’ film. When such care and effort goes into the preparation, no wonder the actual taking of the image is not that far from an act of meditation.

The prints which form the set in question have originated either from this traditional process, or from one of Katie’s pinhole cameras (she makes them herself, out of wooden or cardboard boxes). There are thirteen images in total, and believe me, they are each and every one of them gorgeous, deep and rich and soft in texture with patches of creamy luminescence, and each one reflecting the intensity of thought that has gone into its composition.

Katie writes:

I’m currently studying to finish a long-neglected degree, having picked it up again after a gap of twenty years. Unfortunately, I’m a bit short of funds and so need to raise the necessaries or put the studies on hold for another year. I’m hoping to start my next course, in art history, so that I can go on and apply to study for a masters. But, I need to pay for it in a month’s time. Towards that end, I’m selling some prints at a rather reduced price.

Each print is hand-printed by me on silver gelatin fibre-based paper, and toned. They are printed on 8×10″ paper, so the image size is slightly smaller than that to allow for proper mounting. I will mount and mat them, to a standard size (based on where you are, so, inches or centimetres, as appropriate).

The sale is on until 27 November 2009, and prints will cost £60 each, post-paid, to UK purchasers, or $95 plus shipping elsewhere. I think that’s remarkable. Let’s send Katie back to school!

(above) This weekend, fellow photographer Christine Kessler and I explored Los Angeles with our Holga film cameras. I shot mainly with my Holga pinhole camera which required me to shoot 8 second exposures. Even though I had access to a tripod, I decided to risk it and shoot the images handheld. I was surprised that the shots came out as well as they did for such long, handheld exposures.

(above) I also regularly update my iPhone gallery with random captures from the street.

On a recent trip to Ohio to meet my girlfriend’s family, Liz took me around to many of the abandoned buildings in this once-thriving industrial city. I documented many of these locations with a Holga 35mm pinhole camera. These were all shot handheld with a minimum 10 second exposure. I opted not to use a tripod in order to give them a more painterly, organic texture. I processed the film in my kitchen and then scanned the negatives with my Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 ED.

Pinhole?

Pinhole inseamna literalmente gaura de ac (bold), este primul tip de aparat foto construit vreodata si a fost folosit in Renastere pentru a desena perspectival corect.

Gaura de ac?

Principiul este simpu, daca ai o incinta (cutie) care nu reflecta lumina (neagra inauntru) in care nu intra lumina decat printr-un foarte mic orificiu (staniol gaurit) si in aceasta incinta care nu reflecta lumina exista un material care reflecta (sau capteaza) lumina, atunci pe acest material se va proiecta o imagine rotita 180* fara de subiectul initial (de la stanga la dreapta si cu capul in jos).

Mai simplu se poate?

Aparatul este format dintr-o incapere etansa la lumina vopsita cu negru inauntru si o gaura foarte mica care actioneaza ca un obiectiv. Pinhole-ul se face dintr-o bucata de staniol gaurita cu un ac care se lipeste de aparatul din hartie pe peretele din spatele obturatorului.

Mai simplu, dar e aparat foto?

Daca ii adaugam un suport de inregistrare (film foto) si un obturaror (ca sa nu intre lumina) avem un aparat foto foarte simplu.

Obturaror?

Aparatul foloseste o bucata de hartie opaca care in pozitia ridicata este in fata gaurii (pinhole-ului), dar de multe ori se foloseste si banda adeziva neagra sau chiar degetul. Dezavantajul degetului consta in faptul ca trebuie sa fii apasat in jurul gaurii pana cand pot pune aparatul intr-un loc complet izolat de lumina si de multe ori ai nevoie sa scarpini acele orificii mancacioase (cavitatea nazala).

Cat expun?

aaa … Depinde cat de mare este gaurica si cat de lunga este distanta( focala f=marimea orificiului/distanta focala)(marimea gauricii/cat este distanta de la staniol la film). Expunerea se determina prin experimentare: tai o bucatica de film (neexpusa la intuneric) si o plasezi in locul unde vine normal cliseul, masori expunerea cu un aparat foto (sau exponometru) la f/22 si acelasi ISO pe care il are si filmul tau si expui cam de 4 ori mai mult decat ti-a indicat exponometrul. Daca negativul este prea alb, atunci expui mai mult. Daca negativul este pare prea negru atunci expui mai putin. Obtinand acest raport expui corect in ori ce fel de conditii.

Ce forme mai poate lua un pinhole?

…cam toate formele care iti trec prin minte. Acesta este cel mai versatil tip de aprat foto. La un moment dat am construit un dovleac (10kg) pinhole, o cutie de vopsea pinhole (cea mai eficienta), un borcan de mustar pinhole, si un cub pinhole 6×6.
