    Formado em 1970 e punk antes do tempo, o Pink Fairies foi um dos mais ativos grupos da cena underground de Londres, ao lado de conterrâneos como Hawkwind e Edgar Broughton Band. A formação inicial era composta pelo canadense Paul Rudolph (guitarra e vocais), Duncan Sanderson (baixo) e Russell Hunter (bateria) – todos ex-integrantes do The Deviants, um combo anárquico inglês liderado pelo músico e jornalista Mick Farren. Completava o quarteto o baterista e vocalista John Alder, mais conhecido como Twink, e que já havia tocado nas bandas Tomorrow e Pretty Things. A fase áurea da banda está registrada nos três discos de estúdio gravados na década de 70 e lançados pela Polydor Records.

    O debut é justamente este Never Never Land de 1971 e que vinha embalado em uma capa maravilhosa – um desenho que ilustra os quatro integrantes da banda, representados por quatro gnomos sentados no topo de um planeta, observando o espaço sideral. Em vinil é coisa linda! O design do álbum é uma contribuição da dupla Pennie Smith e Tony Vesely. Com produção conjunta dos Fairies e Neil Slaven, o disco obteve excelente recepção dentro do circuito alternativo, sendo aclamado não só por universitários londrinos, como também por hippies e junkies de plantão, que automaticamente se identificaram com o espírito freak do quarteto. No entanto, a banda nunca alcançou as grandes massas e com o passar dos anos, a sua música foi jogada no pântano das obscuridades musicais.

    Sonzeira mesclando toques ácidos de psicodelia com um hard rock vigoroso, vocais rudes e um instrumental arrojado, sujo e malvado, com direito a riffs ganchudos e climas viajantes em algumas das canções. A viagem sonora começa em clima acústico (na versão em vinil) com a introdução de “Do It”, mas o tema logo descamba para um som agressivo, com solos de guitarra chapantes a cargo de Paul Rudolph. Um clássico da banda que proclama a anarquia ampla, geral e irrestrita e que inspirou uma geração de ícones do punk rock – entre eles, John Lydon do Sex Pistols.

    Outros petardos são as faixas “Say You Love Me” (um energético hard rock conduzido por uma guitarra de timbre sujo e selvagem), “Teenage Rebel” (seção rítmica acelerada, com direito a guitarras nervosas e solo de batera no final) e a fantástica “Uncle Harry’s Last Freak-Out”, trazendo mais de 10 minutos de embate sonoro com guitarras distorcidas e efeitos wah-wah. Uma pegada que lembra o som visceral produzido em Detroit por bandas como Stooges e MC5.

    Há espaço também para climas de calmaria lisérgica como mostram as faixas “Heavenly Man” (impossível não associar esse som com aquele praticado pelo Pink Floyd), “War Girl” (composição avassaladora, moldando uma atmosfera cósmica com ecos de “Black Magic Woman” de Peter Green), “Track One, Side Two”, “Never Never Land” e “The Dream Is Just Beginning”, todas com belos instrumentais.

    Uma ótima estréia, remasterizada e lançada em formato digital, com 4 ou 6 músicas adicionais, dependendo da edição. Além do vinil, tenho uma versão inglesa em cd (tiragem de 500 cópias) com 6 faixas bônus. Destaques para o single “The Snake” (que foi lançado em compacto junto com “Do It” antes da estréia em LP e, inexplicavelmente, subtraído da edição original), “People Call You Crazy” (que trama uma levada de harmônica e vocal com resquícios de Captain Beefhearth) e a maravilhosa “Trouble Coming Everyday”, que segue o rastro de “Trouble Every Day” de Frank Zappa - certamente, uma das influências da trupe. Enfim, um play que não pode faltar em nenhuma coleção que se preze.

    Logo após a gravação do primeiro álbum, o Pink Fairies participou do festival Glastonbury, em junho de 1971, com um elenco formado por David Bowie, Gong, Quintessence, Melanie, The Edgar Broughton Band, Terry Reid, Traffic, Hawkwind, Arthur Brown, Brinsley Schwarz, Fairport Convention e Family. Em 1972, o músico Twink resolve abandonar a banda para formar o obscuro Stars ao lado de ninguém menos que Syd Barrett, ex-líder do Pink Floyd. Um projeto que depois de poucas apresentações, logo foi abortado.

    No mesmo ano era lançado o LP What a Bunch of Sweeties, segundo registro dos Fairies, contando com a força do trio remanescente (Paul, Sandy e Russell) e mais a participação do guitarrista Trevor Burton (ex-The Move) nas faixas “Right On, Fight On” e “Portobello Shuffle”. Dos três discos gravados em estúdio na década de 70, este talvez seja o mais desconhecido da trupe. Eu mesmo só consegui o vinil há pouco tempo e confesso que ainda estou absorvendo o espírito freak da gravação. Mas já deu para perceber que a sonoridade agressiva, dinâmica e divinamente tosca, permanece a milhão.

    Nada mais que uma odisséia pelas vias da anarquia sonora, letras sacanas, levadas quase heavy e total apologia às drogas. A foto de capa mostra uma coleção lisérgica, reunindo bottons de diversas bandas (Grateful Dead, Canned Heat, Jimi Hendrix Experience…), várias insígnias (em uma delas lê-se “Eu sou um inimigo do Estado”), cachimbos artesanais para fumar maconha, muitas pílulas, comprimidos, bugigangas e um baseado no meio disso tudo. Junkie total!

    A capa interna contém uma história em quadrinhos absolutamente freak - uma espécie de conto hippie acerca da natureza, envolvendo bichos e frutas, onde os membros da banda são apresentados como animais-músicos. Bizarro! A arte gráfica e as fotos do álbum, ficam por conta de Edward Barker e Pennie Smith – para quem não sabe, a mesma fotógrafa que clicou Paul Simonon estraçalhando seu baixo elétrico durante um show da banda britânica de punk rock The Clash. A foto está imortalizada na capa do lendário álbum London Calling.

O guitarrista Paul Rudolph nos tempos de Pink Fairies 

    What a Bunch of Sweeties em sua edição original, trazia 8 faixas adrenalíticas, imundice sonora escorrendo pelos sulcos do vinil e produção tosca com assinatura da banda. O álbum começa com um telefonema enigmático, servindo de introdução para o peso e a psicodelia de “Right On, Fight On”, que emana timbres e solos guitarrísticos faiscantes. Outras cacetadas sonoras são “Portobello Shuffle” (hard-rock sensacional e guitarra com timbres de outro planeta) e “Marilyn” (com solos insanos de batera e guitarra, detonando uma explosão de decibéis).

    Tem ainda “The Pigs of Uranus”, cuja letra foi retirada de uma HQ do cartunista americano Gilbert Shelton, criador dos lendários Freak Brothers. Um raro momento country rock dos Fairies, que parecem tocar seus instrumentos diretamente de uma fazenda de outra galáxia. “I Went Up, I Went Down” é a única balada do disco e chega para dar uma tranqüilizada no ambiente sonoro. “X-Ray” traz um ritmo mais funkeado, temperado com guitarras wah-wah e uma cozinha consistente.

    Outros destaques são as versões para “I Saw Her Standing There” dos Beatles (onde é dado um tratamento quase New York Dolls à canção, com muito peso e guitarras distorcidas) e “Walk Don’t Run” dos Ventures (um clássico revisitado de forma surpreendente, com seus 9 minutos de instrumental insano, guitarras saturadas e condução rítmica acelerada). Um disco com uma dose generosa de humor nas composições e muita vitalidade nas instrumentações.

Birth

1957. Budgie (Siouxsie And The Banshees) born Pete Clark in Lancashire.

On Tour

1976. The Mont De Marsan Festival is staged in a bullring south of Bordeaux by Marc Zermati, owner of Skydog Records. It is the first punk rock festival to be held in Europe and features The Count Bishops, The Damned, Nick Lowe, The Pink Fairies, Little Bob Story and The Tyla Gang.

En-route to the festival, Ray Burns of The Damned buys a trendy shirt with epaulettes. Later, when he’s wearing it, he fools around pretending to be an airline pilot saving his plane from certain doom. One of his colleagues shouts out, “It’s fucking Captain Sensible“. The name sticks.

In Court

1998. Jim Kerr’s brother Paul is jailed for two years at the High Court in Edinburgh follwing an arson attack on the home of Radio Tay DJ John Darroch on July 18th 1997. The former Simple Minds tour manager had originally been charged with the attempted murder of 18 year old Karen Darroch and other occupants of the house in Broughty Ferry but this was later reduced to wilfully setting fire to a settee and attempting to set fire to the house to the danger of the occupants. The attack was the culmination of a two year dispute over a shop bought from Darroch in Blairmore, Argyll. Paul Kerr had bought the property with the intention of settling down after years on the road. Unfortunately, the business didn’t take off for him and he claimed that he had been conned by Darroch.

In Hospital

1994. According to The News Of The World, Sinead O’Connor has been having treatment at the London Priory psychiatric hospital. In an article published today entitled, “Sinead Cracks Up”, the paper alleges that she has being undergoing intensive therapy at the £ 350 a day clinic.

A propos de Mai 68, le seul problème qui mérite maintenant d’être posé, est de savoir si le « chasseur français », « la France Agricole », « Système D » et « Paris Turf » vont y consacrer un numéro spécial. En attendant d’avoir la réponse, quelques lignes aujourd’hui sur « Rolling Stone » (édition française) et Rock & Folk qui consacrent eux aussi des numéros ad hoc à 68.

Passons rapidement sur le premier dont on pouvait attendre mieux. Cela dit quelques interviews comme celles de Mick Jagger et Dylan valent le détour le reste étant plutôt décevant. La bonne surprise, contre toute attente, est à mettre à l’actif de Rock & Folk qui avec son hors-série, « l’impossible révolution » essaye de répondre à la question posée par un lecteur, « le rock a-t-il jamais été de gauche ? »

Pour l’occasion Manœuvre redonne la parole à celui qui à l’époque était le rédacteur en chef du magazine rock, Philippe Paringaux. L’ex, au travers l’entretien désormais traditionnel « Mes disques à moi », revient sur son parcours musical et prononce cette phrase définitive et fondée, « Pardon, on a manqué d’humour entre 1968 et 1972. »

Avec des articles sur  les inévitables Dylan et Lennon, ce spécial Mai 68 revient opportunément sur les oubliés Pink Fairies, sur les enfants hardcore de Mai mais aussi sur des formations au bon vieux fond réac comme Lynyrd Skynurd ou Ted Nugent.

Au final la lecture de cet opus hors série s’avère très intéressante. A croire que dans ce 68 Revival la seule bonne nouvelle c’est que Rock & Folk est toujours vivant.

PS : Autre comeback spécial pour vous dire que contrairement à ce que je suggérais l’autre jour, « Taksim », le nouvel album de Fake Oddity n’est disponible qu’à la rentrée de septembre.

I bought my first PINK FAIRIES record in a headshop/pornoshop/recordshop (remember those?) in El Paso, Texas in the late 80’s. And though I’ve been hooked hard on the entire FAIRIES/DEVIANTS nexus ever since, I’ve often struggled to explain why. Their American peers to whom they are most often compared – THE STOOGES, THE MC5, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND – were all more coherent musical units. Studio records from these Brits were consistently uneven, as they keen wildly from sloppy hangover mess to full-throttle, power liftoff in the space of a single hairy eyeball. And neither THE DEVIANTS nor THE FAIRIES had singers who could really, ya know, sing – let alone write actual songs! – until their last, original stand on Kings of Oblivion (thank you, Larry Wallis).

But oooh man they always put EVERYTHING they had into their thing – be that rough-hewn talent, balls-out energy, confrontative politics, or unidentified controlled substances – in turn exhibiting a kind of primitivism more or less unheard of on this fair isle of England at the time. Their unflagging dedication to creating temporary autonomous zones via the sacred act of plugging in, turning it up, and tearing it the fuck down is still worthy of deep reverence. And the collected oeuvre of these guys & their friends is certainly the most compelling document of The End Of Hippie (Burnin’ Ladbroke Grove Division) in extant – one of the more poignantly-fascinating stories in the history of rock n roll. They went up, they went down . . . yes, indeed.

And so all this brings me to the fact that I finally finished reading Rich Deakin’s Keep It Together: Cosmic Boogie with the Deviants and the Pink Fairies, published by Headpress earlier this year. I’ve had it since it’s release here in the UK a few months ago, so excited as I was to get my hands on the complete story behind all these wild records. Welcomed as a godsend to FAIRY freaks worldwide, it’s chock full of images, quotes, and half-remembered stories from everyone involved, including extensive info on even peripheral crazies & hangers-on who chose to orbit this uniquely English sonic blackhole. Not unlike the difficult careers of it’s heros, Keep it Together is a long, tough haul that meanders down blind alleys as often as it takes flight.

That said, it’s also book that often lost me in it’s relentless documentation of DEVIANTS/FAIRIES minutiae. While many of the actual events recounted are captivating, inspiring, and at times, downright Homeric in scope – ultimately, the author fails to bring it all together and articulate why anyone not already attuned should bother paying attention. To paraphase FAIRY drummer Twink: it’s like 10,000 words in 10,000 different cardboard boxes, left for the reader to try and make sense of in the harsh light of 2008. Mick Farren’s Give the Anarchist a Cigarette published by Jonathan Cape/Pimlico in 2001 remains the far more focused, biting, and hilarious – albeit egocentric – examination of this late 60’s/early 70’s crew, as Mick actually succeeds in translating some of that heroic, gonzo spirit into terms even jaded, modern day emo girlyboys could grok. And if ever England’s kids needed some kinda DEVIANT/FAIRY street rock and roll madness & inspiration to light fires under their asses once again, it’s right fucking now.

What does get my unqualified support is the new PINK FAIRIES Finland Freakout 1971 CD (Major League Productions, 2008). Recorded as a trio after Twink had bailed but before Trevor Burton joined up, this catches the boys rockin’ a commie stage to absolute pieces. The fidelity – at least equal to that found on any DEAD C. record – damn near replicates what standing in a muddy field beneath a 50 ft. wall of Orange amplification and Marshall stacks with burst eardrums must’ve once been like. And their take here on “Tomorrow Never Knows” is absolutely definitive. Up the Pinks!

Piat D’or is the modern equivalent of Bulls Blood, Blue Nun or Black Tower, you remember the ad ‘Le French adore Le Piat D’or?’ A screaming great fat lie of such magnanimous proportions it’s miracle that Tyburn wasn’t reinstated just to behead the marketing director.

It would seem Cunt has a new ‘girl’friend, obviously, like he’s clearly done, I’m forced to ignore the fact he’s a father to a small child -or I’ll be forced to rip out the tendons in my neck and defecate upon them- and this is what he’s serving these days. No more Carling for Cunt, oh no, he now requires ‘sumfing clarssy’ to have with his Fray Bentos and Super Noodles. I saw the empty bottles in the recycle bin this morning; I did one of those ‘HA!’ noises at enormous volume and restrained myself from kicking his door in and making him eat broken Piat D’or glass from my cheerfully bloody fingers.

Lovely night last night, Myfwt came back home and unlike the previous evening I succeeded in making supper, which we ate with a friend, who was on Masterchef. I can’t really go on about this too much without breaking cover but I will say the person in question handled themselves in the face of the two presenters in a manner that can only be described as exemplary, said friend maintained their nonchalance and wit and refused to subscribe to the hysteria of television. Jolly good show I say.

Following that a conversation began that was intense enough for us both to imbibe without impunity, indeed, it was helping the flow of conversation. Feeling relatively guilt free from recent bouts of abstinence I rather enjoyed myself. Off the pop tonight, back on tomorrow.

Yesterday day was fairly dreadful, I was feeling all cross about the previous evening and if that wasn’t enough I was forced to ride to the bike hospital in Sunbury. It was a stunning afternoon, this almost worked against me as for some of the journey I was taking the exact same route as I did on Sunday which I found a tad depressing, and there were fucking police everywhere. Still I managed to pull a few stops out… I began to re-evaluate my recent decision to flog the Black Bitch and get a new one, there’s nothing wrong with her, at least nothing that can’t be cured by a new service and she’s unique in so far I’ve spent money on a few bolt on goodies to make her look right pretty.

I arrived at the hospice for the mechanically weak and was informed that in addition to the service I’d need new brake pads, which I was expecting, and new tyres, which I fucking wasn’t. I knew the back was on its last legs but had completely failed to notice a bald centimetre line in the front… Blast. Bike tyres aren’t like the ‘firty pand a cornar’ shit you get on cars. They’re mixed compound, sticky on the outside and slightly harder in the middle, and made to a much higher standard; they’re also fucking expensive. A set of tyres and I won’t get much change from £250. To add insult to injury they leant me a bike. Last time they let me loose on a brand new Speed Triple, no such luck this time. I plodded back to work on a brand new Triumph Bonneville, for those of you that know anything at all about bikes ‘brand new’ and ‘Triumph Bonneville’ is an oxymoron.

I have an original Bonnie (as us bikers call them, it’s the later T140v, US spec, lovely stuff if not particularly reliable) it rests these days at my folks where it’s adored by my dad. The new Bonnie was million miles away from that. For a start it’s much slower, it’s quieter than a Tinker’s whisper and handles like a Parkinson’s patient going down a cobbled road in a shopping trolley. I. Fucking. hate. It.

I’m so embarrassed to be seen on it I took the bus into work today. Christ I miss my Black Bitch, when I see her tomorrow, on Valentines day appropriately, she’ll be all gorgeous and new-like… I can’t sell her. I love her way too much.

Perhaps I’ll buy her a fucking bottle of Piat D’or.

    Após o lançamento do segundo LP do Pink Fairies, o guitarrista Paul Rudolph decidiu se afastar da banda. Segundo consta, sua saída teria sido motivada por causa do consumo excessivo de LSD por parte de Russell e Sanderson e que, segundo ele, estaria prejudicando os rumos da banda. Rudolph passou então a colaborar em álbuns de Robert Calvert, substituiu o baixista Lemmy Kilmister no Hawkwind entre 1975 e 1976 e participou de quatros LPs de Brian Eno entre 1974 e 1978, antes de abandonar a carreira e voltar para o Canadá.  

    Para o seu posto, foi convocado o guitarrista Mick Wayne, ex-integrante das bandas The Bunch of Fives e Junior’s Eyes, e que vinha de trabalhos com David Bowie. Depois de duas apresentações e de uma gravação que gerou dois singles (“Well, Well, Well” e “Hold On”), Wayne acabou sendo demitido por Russell e Sandy. O motivo: discordâncias com relação a direção musical que Wayne queria impor ao grupo. Larry Wallis (ex- Shagrat, Blodwyn Pig e UFO), que já havia sido contratado como segundo guitarrista da banda, assume então a linha de frente dos Fairies, como guitarrista e vocalista demencial.

    Com o power-trio Wallis, Russell e Sandy, partiram para as gravações do sensacional Kings of Oblivion, terceiro disco dos maluquetes e considerado por muitos fãs como o melhor álbum do grupo. Lançado em 1973, trazia mais uma capa de encher os olhos: um fundo azul com três porcos rosas voadores, usando óculos escuros. A ilustração de Edward Barker, acabou virando uma espécie de símbolo da banda, já que o porco voador passou a freqüentar cartazes de shows e outras capas de discos da turma. Mesmo com a alteração no line-up, o Pink Fairies seguia a sua ideologia contracultural, promovendo a música livre, a anarquia geral, a contestação social, o consumo de drogas e os shows alternativos – alguns deles, realizados em verdadeiras pocilgas.

    Musicalmente falando, o disco é uma porrada sonora das boas, comandada por um power trio da pesada, que manda ver no mais descarado e alucinado hard rock. Larry Wallis além de excelente guitarrista, trouxe na bagagem um punhado de boas composições e um estilo vocal primitivo e peculiar que encaixou muito bem com a cozinha pervertida de Duncan Sanderson e Russell Hunter. Resultado: a sonoridade que já era suja e visceral, ficou ainda mais podre e próxima daquela empregada por grupos do chamado proto-punk, como Stooges, MC5 e New York Dolls. 

Larry Wallis apostando suas fichas no Pink Fairies  

    O disco abre com um dos hinos libertários do grupo, a fantástica “City Kids”, em um desempenho marcante de Wallis, tanto no vocal rude quanto na guitarra raivosa. As bases sonoras serviriam para futuras “maquinações heavy”, inspirando descendentes diretos da estirpe, como o próprio Motörhead - banda que Wallis viria a participar entre 1975 e 1976, em sua primeira encarnação. “I Wish I Was A Girl” surpreende e cativa com suas reverberações e escalas guitarrísticas sensacionais. Obra de Wallis, que constrói uma parede sonora envolvente, dando brechas para as experimentações. “When’s the Fun Begin?”, tema composto por Wallis e Mick Farren, encerra o lado A do vinil com um arranjo denso e pesado, made subúrbio londrino. 

    “Chromium Plating” é outra maravilha selvagem e se destaca pelas belas passagens de guitarra e auxílio luxuoso da cozinha que mantém uma pegada agressiva. “Raceway” dispara um tema instrumental vigoroso, com batera e baixo fornecendo sólida base rítmica para a guitarra de Wallis injetar riffs matadores. A machista “Chambermaid” tem letra sacana que envolve arrumadeiras de hotéis, servindo de munição para mais um instrumental cru e energético. E “Street Urchin” fecha a bolacha, com nova leva de riffs ruidosos e excelente trabalho do trio, constatando o entrosamento e a unidade sonora dos Fairies. Sem dúvidas, um dos maiores expoentes do rock underground dos anos 70. 

     Com o fim do contrato com a Polydor, a banda foi aos poucos perdendo a audiência e seus membros se dispersando. Para reagrupar a trupe, Ted Carroll (chefe da Chiswick Records) organizou um concerto único no The Roundhouse, em Londres, em meados de 1975. Estavam lá Paul Rudolph, Larry Wallis, Duncan Sanderson, Russell Hunter e Twink. O show foi lançado em disco em 1982 e saiu com o título de Live At The Roundhouse 1975. 

    Os anos passaram, mas tentativas frustradas de reativar a banda acabaram aumentando o seu período de inatividade. Os veteranos da banda finalmente conseguiram uma reaproximação em 1987, quando Twink, Russell, Sanderson, Wallis e Andy Colquhoun reformaram o Pink Fairies e gravaram o álbum Kill ‘Em and Eat ‘Em. Desde então, foram emitidos vários títulos de material ao vivo e coletâneas do grupo. Pérolas como Uncle Harry (1998), Do It! (1999) e Finland Freakout 1971 (2008) são altamente recomendadas.
