It’s no secret I visit Chantie and Alkmaar often. So far this year, I’ve seen her twice! I wish it was more. Chantie is a great friend and I would’ve loved to have her in a ‘come-over-for-dinner-tonight-distance’.  Sadly we live over 950 km apart (straight line distance). That means we have to travel a lot to see each other. Well, I don’t mind travelling, so that’s ok.

We’ve been talking / draming about seeing each other soon again.  For a long time it was only talk. Chantie wasn’t even sure she would afford having me over. Chantie naturally spend more money than she normally would when I’m there. We go out eating, we shop, we go to Amsterdam etc etc.

At one point she told me we might just stop dreaming about a near visit. I refused that and told her I didn’t need to spend money to have fun with her. So I came up with some ideas of what we could do without spending money.  Like:

• stay inside and watch Oprah on DVD all day while eating candy.
• Play lots of Rummy. Oh how we love that game!
• Buy alcohol, drink at home and then go out dancing.
• Watch movies on DVD.
• visit a museum.
• go around town photographing buildings, bikes, boats and other different things.
• have photosessions with my camera (taking pics of each other and both together)
• help Chantie with her e-baying

Things doesn’t have to cost much in order to have fun. Fun is what we create.

Not many days later, I get an e-mail from KLM saying they’re having a 5 days sale with low prices to some destinations in Europe. Amsterdam was one of them! How convenient!

After some talking, we decided that I couldn’t let this sale go by wihtout me buying a ticket. After talking to one of the leaders at my office (my boss was away that day) to get a day off, I ordered tickets for next Easter! I’ll be going the 31st of March and go home on the 6th of April. Almost a week! And I only paid 1032 NOK for the ticket. Sweet!

Good lord, I can’t wait to see her again! 112 days left!

We have also been talking about PinkPop (the festival south in Holland), but that is faaaar from a reality. We know Pink, Rammstein and John Mayer is coming. We both would love to see Pink. And Chantie wants to see Rammstein and I want to see John Mayer.

If we go, it depends on a lot of things. Do we have money? Is there enough interesting artists coming? Do we get the days off?

We have lots of time to decide if we’re gonna go or not. I’m not putting all my money on it – that we are going. If it happens, it will be fun. But if it doesn’t happen, I’ll live.

Meid met roze muts voor de Metallica poster tijdens Pinkpop 2008, Landgraaf 1-6-2008.

Het grappige van de meeste foto’s met een foto in beeld is dat ze bijna altijd een aardig beeld opleveren. Deze meid stond voor de poster van Metallica (een foto van Anton Corbijn als ik me niet vergis) tijdens het Pinkpop festival.

Met name met hardrockbands als Cavalera Conspiracy kun je met een beetje timing een aardig moment vastleggen. Vaak tijdens een sprong of zoals in dit geval tijdens het “Headbangen”. Cavalera Conspiracy live op Pinkpop 2008, Landgraaf 1-6-2008.

Emergency Refreshments team

De aantrekkelijke dames van het Emergency Refreshments team van Coca Cola verkoelen, scheren en smeren de bezoekers van Pinkpop op een ludieke sexy manier. Pinkpop 30-5-2009.

Roisin Murphy speelt op Pinkpop 2008, Landgraaf 1-6-2008.

De voormalige zangeres van Moloko, Roisin Murphy hier live op Pinkpop in 2008, geeft een spectaculaire show waarbij ze voor zo’n beetje elk nummer andere kleding aantrekt. Dit levert in combinatie met de aanwezige concert verlichting fraai uitgelichte poses op.

Hoewel de titel je misschien raar doet opkijken, is het een citaat van de zelfbenoemde ‘moeder alle vaderlandse critici’ Jan Mulder. Met “Lekker rrrrauw” gaf hij zijn mening over een Nederlandse band, en niet zomaar een band.

‘De Staat’ is de naam van een formatie bestaande uit vijf leden. In 2007, nog maar twee jaar geleden, verscheen hun eerste demo. Deze werd opgenomen in het huis van excentrieke leadzanger Torre Florim. Sindsdien gaat alles in sneltreinvaart. In 2008 tekende de band bij ‘Excelsior Recordings’ waarna in januari van dit jaar het logische gevolg hun eerste album was.

Wait for Evolution was het resultaat van lang werken en het kwam in de Album Top-20 zelfs tot een dertiende plaats. Na veel optredens in 2008 is 2009 met optredens op onder meer Pinkpop en Sziget (Hongarije) een bijzonder succesvol jaar. In 2010 staat er zelfs een optreden op het internationale festival Glastonbury in de agenda. Kortom, wie De Staat nog niet kent, heeft onder een steen geleefd. Ik zal dit stuk niet te veel tekst laten bevatten, dus laat ik de lezer nog genieten van ‘de fantastische reis van de ondergrondse man.’ Het past ook bij de stijl van de band, “less talking, more rocking”

This week, we have a powerful live performance by influential Canadian singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette.

It’s her 1995 breakthrough hit, the bitter and twisted, vitriolic reflection on being dumped, You Oughta Know, from the Albun Jagged Little Pill.

It was filmed at the Pinkpop festival in Landgraaf, Holland, in 1996.

Contained in this post are the lyrics to the song credited incorrectly as “Who Do You Love” on the Pinkpop video footage. It has been unofficially renamed “I was Wrong,” taking its name from the phrase most often repeated in the chorus by Lester Butler. The lyrics are similar to and seem to have been lifted in part from the Magic Sam tune “You Were Wrong,” while the music sounds as if it was borrowed from a different Magic Sam song called “Backstroke.” At any rate, if you’re listening to the Pinkpop performance, these are the lyrics.

We zitten er op dit moment volop in: de festivalzomer is bijna halfweg. Pinkpop en Werchter zijn al achter de rug, Pukkelpop en Lowlands moeten nog beginnen. Gisteren op het werk een boek meegenomen, dat een mengvorm is van literatuur, muziek en knappe foto’s. Voor iedereen die al eens een festivalweide aandoet, van muziek houdt en er graag over leest.

Moddergevechten op Kralingen, je eerste jointje op Pinkpop, stagediven op Rock Werchter: sinds de jaren zeventig genieten honderdduizenden mensen jaar in jaar uit van popfestivals. Van de muziek, de vriendschap, van wat later je allerbeste herinneringen blijken te zijn. Het festivalgevoel sleurt de lezer mee naar de modderige grasvelden en alle geneugten die daarbij horen. Schrijver Arne van Terphoven en fotograaf Isabella Rozendaal, beiden doorgewinterde festivalgangers, struinden een zomer lang de grote meerdaagse festivals in Nederland en Vlaanderen af en doen in woord en beeld verslag van wat ze daar zagen, hoorden en voelden.

Sterke verhalen van meer of minder prominente bezoekers en betrokkenen, foto’s van uitzinnige campingtaferelen, interviews met festivalbands. Kortom: alles wat een festival tot een festival maakt in een fullcolourbladerboek waar de rock-’n-roll vanaf spat. Zo, als dat niet uitnodigend klinkt, dan weet ik het ook niet meer!

En 1969, à l’image de Woodstock, Jan Smeets crée dans le sud des Pays-Bas le premier des grands festivals rock européens. Le 18 mai 1970, le lundi de Pentecôte, PinkPop (pour Pinksteren, “Pentecôte” en néerlandais) est lancé. Jan Smeets est resté l’âme du festival, qui a fêté cette année sa 40e édition. Extraits de concerts, avec des têtes d’affiche comme Bruce Springsteen (qui a joué à guichets fermés), Depeche Mode, Placebo, Ting Tings, Anouk, Billy Talent, Snow Patrol ou Franz Ferdinand… En bonus, les artistes évoquent pour ARTE leurs souvenirs de la décennie 1980.

Le soir du 16 juillet, Bruce Springsteen, décidément Man at the top, sera à la fois sur la scène des Vieilles Charrues, en interview sur France-Inter… et sur l’antenne d’Arte, qui diffusera des extraits du festival PinkPop auquel il a participé ce printemps au Danemark !

Combien de chansons seront diffusées ? Mystère…

Am 28. Mai kamen sie an – zwei Karten fürs Pinkpop Festival in Landgraaf kurz hinter Aachen. Headliner Bruce Springsteen, Depeche Mode und Snow Patrol… Sehr geil, vor allen Dingen Depeche Mode und Coheads wie The Killers…Am gleichen Tag dann die Absage von Depeche Mode. Dave Gahan, der Frontmann hat Blasenkrebs, der Tumor wurde entfernt, alle Shows in den nächsten Wochen wurden gecancelled. Aber was solls. Bei Temperaturen von durchgehend über 30° an allen drei Festivaltagen war dann vor allen Dingen der alte Bruce das absolute Highlight.

Mit unglaublicher Bühnen-Präsenz hat er das altersklassenmäßig sehr gemischte Publikum die ganze Zeit hypnotisch im Griff gehabt. Ein echtes Erlebnis. Der andere Wehrmutstropfen (neben der DM-Absage) war, dass wir die Headliner nie zu Ende sehen konnten, weil wir mit der letzten Bahn zurück zu Hassans Wohnung in Aachen gefahren sind… Warum wir nicht gezeltet haben?

Weil wir nachdem wir von Dienstag auf Mittwoch ausschlafen konnten, am Mittwoch morgen direkt zum schönen Nürburgring gefahren sind. Rock am Ring stand schließlich an. Mit Hassan, Sbrisny, Marie, Evy und meiner Wenigkeit konnten wir dann auch bereits gegen Mittag unser Zelt auf C1 aufschlagen. ‘Ne schöne Jrooß auch an unsere Nachbarn Thorsten, Paul, Anna, die abgefuckte Minke und wie sie alle heißen…

Am Freitag kam dann auch Denise nach und obwohl das Lineup auf dem Papier nicht so viel hermachte war an allen Tagen klasse Stimmung garantiert. Ich würde sogar sagen dass dieses Festival das bisher beste war (von zehn mehrtägigen Open-Air Festivals), das ich erleben durfte.

Ever wonder what it would be like to channel The Byrds lyrics play in front of thousands of fans who are movin’ and groovin’ to your songs? I am willing to admit here and now that when I played in bands in college and for a few years following graduation I had visions of greatness. But, alas, 32 reasonably excited friends at The Rainbow Tavern were all we could muster.

But what is it like? I know only one true “rock star” so I decided to ask him. Dave Dederer played “guitbass” and was a founding member of The President of the United States of America and until a few years ago toured the world with the band. Dave is still involved with the business of the band, but decided a “normal” job and time at home with his wife and darling kids was more important. Hard to argue with his logic.

I asked Dave what it was like to play a show to 60,000 fans like they did in 1996 at PinkPop in the Netherlands. Dave said he and Chris (Ballew, co-founder) wandered the grounds the night before and it was a bit like being turned loose on a deserted carnival ground. They went on the next day and as video evidence shows had a great time.

While I couldn’t get Dave to wax eloquently about his experiences being on stage, he did tell me he had an “Aha” moment while at PinkPop. “I think we went on at about noon the next day, playing to 80,000 drunk Dutch people. Rage Against the Machine followed us. I had never liked them. Two bars into the first song of their set, all 80,000 heads were banging in unison. I thought to myself, “Oh…I get it.” And I’ve loved them ever since.”

Interesting observation but I was left asking myself; “great story Dave, but what was it REALLY like???” Maybe rock stars have a code similar to the pirate code. Don’t tell a fan what it’s like to be on stage playing music in front of thousands of screaming fans.

They need to find out for themselves.

Dave sent me a follow-up after reading this blog post. Maybe I’ll try driving a forklift at Home Depot and see if I get a similar feeling then I’ll know.

“What was it like? Well…hard to describe if you’ve never played music…going onstage in front of 80,000 people (and live on Dutch TV with big audience)…no soundcheck…an amplifier that wasn’t mine and I had never used before…not sure if you’re going to be able to hear yourself or your bandmates in the monitors…alternately scary and exhilarating…if you stop to think about it, playing loud music in front of a lot of people is really a job where you operate very powerful heavy machinery in a pressure-packed environment, nowhere more so than at those huge festivals…” DD

Pinkpop aus der Luft

An Pfingsten fand wieder das alljährliche Pink Pop Festival in Landgraaf (Holland) statt, dieses Jahr zum 40.ten mal.  Bruce Springsteen mit der E-Street Band waren der Absolute Topact und Grundgenug aufs Festival zufahren, obwohl auch noch weitere tolle Künstler und Band dort waren.
