Postanowiłem ożywić blog za pomocą tematycznych pierwszych piątek. Głupie to, ale świetna zabawa, przynajmniej dla mnie. Dzisiejszy temat brzmi “nóż”. Nie pytajcie dlaczego, bo nie wiem. Zaczynamy, kolejność od najmniej nożowatego kawałka do najbardziej.

5. Radiohead – Knives Out. Nie mam pojęcia, o co chodzi w tekście (coś o zabijaniu myszy), ale tytuł o wyciąganiu noży wystarczy na miejsce piąte. Fragment interpretacji anonimowego internauty: “Wg mnie to o zerwaniu (…) mysz może oznaczać uczucie gniewu albo smutku…” A, no to już wiadomo.

4. Nick Cave, PJ Harvey & The Bad Seeds – Henry Lee. Bohaterem jest zazdrosna panna i jej mały scyzoryk. Dziewczyna czekająca na Nicka Cave’a się nie doczeka, bo PJ Harvey go rzeczonym narzędziem przebiła. Na płycie Murder Ballads był też inny niezły męsko-damsko-zabójczy duet, ale tam użyto prostackiego kamienia i Kylie Minogue.

3. Gustav Mahler – Ich hab’ ein glühend Messer. Nóż w sercu wprawdzie tylko metaforyczny, ale za to jak boli: “O weh! O weh!” Ach, te austriackie kobiety. Już o tym pisałem – najwyraźniej mam świra na punkcie tej pieśni. Nie pytajcie dlaczego, bo nie wiem.

2. Breakout – Oni zaraz przyjdą tu. Nóż nie metaforyczny, ale do chleba. “Już nie będziesz zdradzać mnie” – stwierdzenie w zasadzie prawdziwe, choć triumfalizm podmiotu lirycznego nie do końca uzasadniony. Ale co za riff, proszę państwa, co za riff!

1. Kurt Weill / Bertolt Brecht – Die Moritat von Mackie Messer. Na pierwszym miejscu nie mógł być nikt inny, jak tylko człowiek-nóż, czyli Mackie Messer z Opery za trzy grosze. Piosenka, zwana też Mackie Majcher albo Mack the Knife najlepiej brzmi w wykonaniu autora słów Bertolda Brechta. Lepszego “r” w każdym razie nigdzie nie usłyszycie.

Jeśli usuną któryś link, to Mackie ich znajdzie. Jeśli macie inne propozycje, to słucham. Jeśli ktoś ma ochotę użyć dowcipnego powiedzenia “a nuż widelec”, niech o tym zapomni. Obrazek z Wikipedii. W następnym top 5 piosenki o noszach.

Llevo ya demasiado tiempo cortándome de enlazar artículos de Pío Moa, porque si empiezo, no acabo. Sin embargo, tras la siniestra jornada de hoy, con el editorial conjunto de la prensa catalana en pleno, no espero más y declaro inaugurada la sección de memoria histórica.

Empezamos a todo gas, con una batería de artículos de Pío Moa, que narran acontecimientos de hace ochenta años, pero que venimos reviviendo en clave contemporánea, especialmente desde la siniestra jornada del 14-M.

No se trata de una declaración de intenciones, ni de panfletos, como he escuchado miles de veces antes de acercarme a sus sorprendentes artículos. Pío Moa ha dedicado, con rotundo éxito historiográfico, importantes esfuerzos a la tarea de desmontar todos los mitos que la izquierda ha desplegado.

No ha logrado asímismo calar en la población, ni en la élite intelectual, controlada por la izquierda. Para la progresía, Moa es el mismo demonio. Auténtico vade retro de la izquierda. Y a día de hoy, sin el visto bueno de la izquierda mediática, nada puede calar en la sociedad. El de Pío Moa es un ejercicio de memoria histórica sin filtros ideológicos. Moa disecciona el fenómeno y a sus actores con distancia de entomólogo, y el resultado es asombroso.

Sin embargo, sus libros se leen con comodidad y asombro. Comodidad, porque su estilo directo y organizado hacen difícil que se pierda el hilo. Además, y tristemente, el paralelismo clarísimo entre los hechos previos a la guerra civil y nuestros días, sólo facilita más la lectura de los hechos. De lo cual viene el asombro al detectar tal paralelismo.

Éste artículo sirve de introducción al trabajo del autor, que lleva años enfrascado en una rigurosa revisión, una relectura en perspectiva, incluso, de la guerra civil española, y sobre todo, de los años previos al conflicto. Pinche sobre el encabezado para acceder al artículo completo.

A continuación ofrezco una serie de artículos del autor, que dibujan los años previos al conflicto definitivo. Faltaría, para redondear la colección, el marco social que incluye en la introducción de su obra “El Derrumbe de la Segunda República y la Guerra Civil”, pero no contamos con transcripción alguna. Éste segundo texto es un artículo perteneciente a la publicación La Ilustración Liberal.

In September, I interviewed for what I thought was an amazing job. It was for the public information officer position in my hometown of Hoboken.  I met with our interim mayor at the last-minute, over a holiday weekend, and thought it went fabulously. She took my portfolio and asked for my references.

She said the position needed to be filled immediately, but weeks went by and there was no follow-up. When I checked in, I was told interviews were still being conducted. I was cool with that. The job market has changed drastically and it’s not the same finding a gig today as it used to be. Whereas two years ago, you may have gone on one or two interviews within two weeks, these days, you may go through three to five over a two month period.

As the weeks progressed, I heard nothing. Ok, I thought, maybe the position was on hold while she was running for permanent office; maybe it was canceled due to lack of funding; or perhaps it was filled internally. Whatever the case, it would have been nice to have received a follow-up, but better yet, to have gotten my work back.

I called and emailed the mayor’s office for weeks with no response. The mayor had given me her personal email but my attempts proved unsuccessful.  I left messages with people in her office who promised they would relay my concern about my portfolio but still no movement. I reached out to the mayor’s aide who at one point said he’d get me my stuff by the end of the week, only to be forgotten about.

HELP! My press portfolio is being hijacked in city hall! Ok, I am being a bit dramatic here, but seriously, I brought great samples of my work to this interview because it was something I wanted; I truly wanted to impress. In this economy, it’s sin that anyone would ignore repeated attempts to get someone’s work back. Being too busy is not an acceptable reason. I’m a resident (an unemployed one at that!) of your community; please, show me a little respect!

I shouldn’t have to write a blog to get my work back, but maybe it will work.

Mais nen um pio!

The Government of India in March 2005 amended existing norms to allow 100 per cent FDI in the construction business. Until then, only Non Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) were permitted to invest in the housing and the real estate sectors. Eventually Foreign investors other than NRIs were allowed to invest only in development of integrated townships and settlements either through a wholly owned subsidiary or through a joint venture company in India along with a local partner.

The Government of India has set up certain guidelines for investors willing to apply in FDI in real estate, which have conditions like area, investment options and target for completion of a project.

REMF and REIT

One of the most anticipated promises for the Indian real estate sector, which in turn will benefit developments of hotels, has been the entry of Real Estate Mutual Funds (REMFs) or Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs).

Industry experts believe that REMFS and REITS will definitely ensure more availability of funds to the developers and faster growth of real estate sector. A few real estate entities like HDFC Real Estate Fund, ICICI-Tishman Speyer, Ascendas India IT Park Fund, Kotak Mahindra Realty Fund, IDFC, and Edelweiss Capital have received approval and started investing in real estate.

India and China – A Comparison

India’s FDI has always been compared with China and this is where the differences stand out. For 2000, FDIs for China and India stand at USD 40 billion and USD 2 billion, respectively, showing India in poor light. But, India considers only cash inflows of equity when counting its FDI, but China reflects cash, reinvested earnings and round-tripping routing through Hong Kong in its FDI calculations. Based on the standard IMF methodology, India’s FDI inflows stand at $8 billion while China stands at $22 billion. There is still a wide gap, but one that can be bridged. Of course, about half of China’s FDIs are in the real estate sector, while India has minimal FDI in this sector. One must understand that there is no private ownership of land in China. Plus differences in the political environment between the two countries may also have an impact on FDIs. The political structure in China still binds politicians strongly to entrepreneurs and infrastructure is able to keep pace with the growth in real estate. But one must keep in mind that India and China are not competing for FDIs from the same sources, but totally different sectors. Though China appears to be outperforming India in FDIs, India is better placed than China in the democratic, financial and business sectors. Table II compares the two giants from the economic point of view.

Recent Concerns

Recently the government was weighing the impact of a possible three-year ban on stake sale by foreign investors in real estate projects, a decision  that could affect future capital inflows into the sector.

Real estate developers had then urged the government to reinterpret a provision in the foreign direct investment guidelines, so as to stop overseas investors from withdrawing their funds, beyond the minimum capital of $5 million, before three years of the initial investment.

This, they said, will help them tide over the current liquidity crisis. However, the commerce ministry is concerned that such a measure could be counter-productive. The government wants to keep the foreign investment policy as flexible as possible since the country now needs foreign capital to sustain the growth momentum. For any foreign investor, the exit strategy is as important as the entry strategy. If it is difficult to withdraw capital and redeploy it in another sector, then foreign investors could become reluctant to invest in real estate.

The basic crux of the matter is that in any cross border Joint Venture deal the foreign investor has to provide a minimum of 5 million dollars and this should be accordingly brought within 6 months of the commencement of the business. Furthermore, there is a limitation when it comes to any repatriation of the funds before 3 years starting from date of minimum capitalization. This has now been interpreted in such a way so as to give a leeway to the investor who has provided for funds exceeding the minimum capital requirement of 5 million dollars. Hence the investor can repatriate the funds within the 3 year period.

Taking up a job abroad or settling overseas may not absolve an individual from filing an income-tax return in India.

Filing of a tax return in India depends on the taxability of income earned by the individual.

This in turn depends on his/her residential status as per domestic tax laws.

Who is a Non resident in India?

As per domestic tax laws (i.e. Income Tax Act, 1961), an individual is considered to be a tax resident of India, if he satisfies either of the following conditions:

1) is physically present in India for 182 days or more in that tax year (period beginning from 1 April through 31 March); or

2) is physically present in India for 60 days in that tax year and 365 days or more in the preceding four tax years. The period of 60 days is extended to 182 days, if the individual is:

- an Indian citizen who leaves India during the tax year for purpose of employment outside India or as a member of the crew of an Indian ship; or

- an Indian citizen or a person of Indian origin and comes to India for a visit. A person is deemed to be person of Indian origin if, he or either of his parents or any of his grandparents were born in undivided India.

If neither of the condition is satisfied, the individual is classified as a non resident.

The following income of a NRI is taxable in India:

” Income which is received/ is deemed to be received in India; or ” Income which accrues or arise/ is deemed to accrue or arise in India.

In most cases, the NRI would also be taxed in country of his residence.

Such a situation may entail additional tax outflow due to double taxation (i.e. income being taxed in India as well as in the country of residence).

The double taxation could be mitigated by appropriate planning considering provisions of the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (tax treaty) entered into by India with other countries and availing benefits of the same, if any.

Why NRIs are required to file income-tax returns in India?

A NRI is required to file income-tax return in India, under the following situations:

” India sourced income exceeds the basic exemption limit (Rs 1.5 lacs for tax year 2008-09) ; ” Taxes withheld exceed tax liability for the tax year thus resulting in a refund situation; ” To enable the NRI to claim tax treaty benefits in country of his residence (i.e. the country in which his global income is consolidated and taxed).

Where income of the NRI consists only of investment income or long term capital gains or both and appropriate taxes have been withheld on such income, the NRI is not required to file income-tax return.

Filing of income-tax return in India by NRIs – procedure

If the NRI is not registered with the Indian tax authorities, the first step towards filing the income-tax return would be to make an application for allotment of Permanent Account Number (PAN) in Form 49A. The PAN should be quoted in all correspondences with Indian tax authorities, including income-tax return. The application can be made either in physical form or electronically.

Based on the nature of income, appropriate income-tax return form needs to be filled. The relevant forms for NRI’s for tax year 2008-09 are as under:

ITR 1 Individuals having income from salary/ pension/ family pension & interest

ITR 2 Individuals not having income from business/ profession

ITR 3 Individuals who are partners in a partnership firm and do not carry out any other business/ profession

ITR 4 Individuals having income from business/ profession

The income-tax return can be filed either in physical form or electronically on website of the income-tax department (www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in)

Under physical filing option, the NRI must fill the relevant ITR form and submit the same alongwith the acknowledgment (ITR V) to the concerned income-tax office duly signed and verified. If the individual is not present in India, the income-tax return and the acknowledgement should be signed by a person duly authorised by him and holding a valid power of attorney.

Under the electronic filing option, the NRI is required to fill in the necessary details and validate the ITR form. Upon validation, a XML file is generated, which is uploaded on the website with a Digital Signature (NB: Digital signature is required to be separately obtained from specified Digital Signature Issuing Authorities). However, if the XML file is uploaded without a digital signature, the individual is required to print the acknowledgement and submit the same through ordinary post at the following address within thirty days from the date of uploading the income-tax return.

Income-tax Department – Centralized Processing Center (CPC) Post Box No 1, Electronic City Post Office, Bangalore – 560100, Karnataka

It is important to note that the acknowledgement generated upon uploading of return is a password protected file. The password to open the file is PAN number (in lower case) and date of birth (ddmmyyyy) of the individual. For eg, if the PAN of the individual is ABCDE9999X and his date of birth is 1 October 1975, the password to open the acknowledgment would be abcde9999×01101975.

Upon receipt of ITR V, the CPC would send a confirmation e-mail on the email address mentioned in the income-tax return. The due date for filing income-tax return for tax year 2008-09 is 31 July. Where the NRI is working partner in a firm or is engaged in business/ profession whose accounts are liable to be audited, the due date is 30 September.

Consequence of not filing income-tax return by NRI

Non filing of income-tax return would result in levy of interest at 1 percent per month of delay.

Further, penalty of Rs 5,000 could be levied if the income-tax return is not furnished within a period of two years from end of the relevant tax year (i.e. 31 March 2011 for tax year 2008-09).

Issues faced by NRI’s in preparation & filing of income-tax return

The tax years of countries are usually different.

Country: Tax Year

United Kingdom : 6 April – 5 April

Australia: 1 July – 30 June

USA, Germany, Denmark, Singapore: 1 January – 31 December

It is imperative to determine the residential status of the NRI for a particular tax year as the residential status would determine eligibility to claim tax treaty benefits. There could be situation where an individual is a resident of two countries or a non-resident in both the countries (this is possible in case of highly mobile employees).

In such situation, a ‘tie-breaker’ test as per the relevant tax treaty is applied to determine residential status of the individual. This determination is imperative, since the country of residence relieves burden of double taxation by giving either credit for taxes paid in the source country or the country in which the individual is not a resident spares the income that has suffered tax in the country of residence.

On the other hand, where a NRI is considered to be a non resident of both countries, he is not entitled to the tax treaty benefits and thus would be governed by the respective domestic tax laws of those countries relating to residence and taxability. “Bank details – It is mandatory to provide bank account details in income-tax return in case of refund. Most of the NRI’s don’t have bank account in India and may be forced to open one to claim refund.

“Electronic filing of income-tax return without digital signature – A signed copy of the acknowledgment is required to be mailed to the CPC, Bangalore via regular post within a period of 30 days. Sending the acknowledgement by any other medium like courier or speed post is not permitted. Accordingly, there is no system to track the acknowledgment and confirm if it has reached the CPC within the prescribed time.

Further, in the absence of a stamped copy of the acknowledgment, it is not clear how the taxpayer would furnish proof of filing of income-tax return where required.

Quem nunca escutou perto do dia das crianças o jingle da Casa Pio?

Esse jingle também contagiou Mariana, lembro-me que ano passado Mariana estava com 4 meses e quando passava a propaganda ela acordava para olhar, esse ano não foi diferente. Quando passa a propaganda ela vai para frente da televisão dançar e quando acaba quer mais.

Era para quem comprar um sapato na casa pio ganhar um DVD com as propagandas e algumas músicas infantis. Todos iriam querer, iria atrelar o sapato ao DVD que criança adora.

Menudo debut chavales!!! Partidazo que nos hemos marcado para empezar la temporada, ante un rival bastante flojo con el balón, pero con un muy buen portero. Hemos jugado muy muy bien, ellos han tirado 1 vez a puerta y otras 2 fuera, y nada más, y han sido 5 goles, pero podrían haber sido 10…

Hemos dominado el partido entero, pero nos ha costado abrir la lata porque tenían un gran portero que nos paraba todo. Curiosamente ha sido Pío el que ha conseguido marcar el 1-0 mediada la primera parte, a placer y a pase de Iker, tras una gran jugada. Y así hemos llegado al descanso, con un parco 1-0 y un dominio absoluto.

Y la segunda parte ha empezado igual, con el portero rival imposible de batir, hasta que ha tenido que irse por causas desconocidas. ¿Habrá tenido algo que ver la patada que le ha dado Charly en la mano justo en su última jugada? Nunca lo sabremos, pero Charly que no se cuelgue la medalla.

Con el “portero suplente” ya todo ha ido sobre ruedas y los goles han ido cayendo. Antonio tras un pase extraño de Oli hacía el 2-0. Oli sentenciaba el partido marcando el 3-0 tras pase de Pol. E Iker cerraba la cuenta con sus 2 goles, con asistencias de Charly y de Popi.

Al final un resultado más justo, un partido redondo y muy buenas sensaciones. ¡¡¡Vamos Steaua que este año ascendemos sí o sí!!!

Conta a historia de sua vida que ele tinha dons especiais, um deles era de receber as confições como nenhum outro Pe podia…tipo você ia se confessar e não falava todos os pecados, tipo com vergonha, ele te falava todos eles que você estava escondendo.

Padre Pio por toda sua santidade aqui na terra que antes de falecer foi avisado por um anjo, celebrou uma Missa nesta intenção.

Seria esta Missa o caminho do seu Calvário definitivo, onde entregaria a alma e o corpo ao seu grande apaixonado; a última vez que os seus filhos espirituais veriam o Padre a quem tanto amavam.

Era madrugada do dia 23 de setembro de 1968, no seu quarto conventual com o terço entre os dedos repetindo o nome de Jesus e Maria, descansa em paz aquele que tinha abraçado a Cruz de Cristo, fazendo desta a ponte de ligação entre a terra e o céu.

Foi beatificado no dia 2 de maio de 1999 pelo Papa João Paulo II que, viria também a canonizar Padre Pio no dia 16 de junho de 2002.

For days I have been thinking about posting about the fact that Christiansburg does not have a PIO (public information officer). Blacksburg and Montgomery County both do.

What does a PIO do? Well, they promote the town. They are the go-between for the media and town managers. The Town Manager does not need to be spending the time promoting and talking to the media. He needs to manage. Without a PIO, the media can hit up anyone in the town for a quote or information, leading to misinformation.

Well, it looks like Christiansburg is getting a PIO at some point.

It is about time!

Looking forward seeing fellow PIOs and NRIs at a key conference in Europe on business possibilities in and with India or Indian companies.

Specially in our sector there are a lot of possibilities. Since education is going strong a well as a “growing” economy, there is more space for leisure and events.

So why not go there and see if I can broaden my horizon and organize top end events for Indian companies all over the world, specially India and the Netherlands.

Durante el anochecer, cuando mi metabolismo y los medicamentos, combinados en orgiástica síntesis, inducen en mí pequeñas pérdidas de conciencia y episodios de un suave letargo soñoliento y de palabras arrastradas en pesada dicción, experimento en abundancia lo que yo llamo microsueños intoxicados. Debe de ser que mi cerebro, acosado por los inhibidores de la anhidrasa carbónica, acaba por claudicar y cede ante la invasión de la química contra el glaucoma. Es entonces, en el momento en que las píldoras y los colirios roban a mi órgano gris el agua y los humores, cuando sufro de estos pequeños y enigmáticos episodios oníricos y alucinatorios, a los que no puedo atribuir nunca ninguna interpretación ni simbología, pero de los que sí me he beneficiado en más de una ocasión para extraer las ideas con las que adornar de torpe realismo mágico mis relatos.

Un libro de aprendizaje de la lengua inglesa. Está abierto por una página cualquiera, en la que se ven cuadros y diagramas, y también algunas líneas de texto bien perfiladas: subrayadas y remarcadas en negro, en un color negro recargado y saltón. De fondo, suena repetitiva una voz andrógina y un poco chillona que declama unos versos. ¿Son de Novalis? ¿De Kavafis?

So there I am, wondering why on earth my bum hurts so darned much… solid as a rock after only 3 nights, throbbing every time I walk, I mean, really, WHAT?

Every time I’ve done a retrieval and started my PIO injections I have screwed up and taken 2cc’s of PIO the first few nights until I stop and look at the directions and realize I only need to to take 1cc per night.

Well, that explains the rock-solid glutes.  Yeah.  Did I mention I do this every single cycle? The good news is that you can’t overdose on progesterone.

Sifting through old boxes in the midst of a multi-year garage overhaul, I encountered a large box of old VHS tapes that make up my dad’s television outtakes from his years as a public information officer (PIO) for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and yet another box that contained items from various eras of my career in media.

I went from photographer to writer. I then simultaneously made a somewhat brief showing as a videographer. My interest in video seemed to have culminated with an on-the-job vehicle accident but segued into experience in the arena of broadcast news radio. This ended shortly after the realization of an unpalatable political environment within the newsroom but also coincided with two situations my dad was involved in that served as a definite conflict of interest. One of these situations transpired after the death of L.A. County Sheriff Sherman Block and was potentially incriminating to the person who eventually took reigns of the office. Neither of us was fond of the guy but my confidence was honor bound and therefore not interested in unseating a snake that the populace gleefully voted into power.

Anyhow, it was thereafter I made the rounds freelancing, primarily sticking to the tasks of a photographer and writer, working both daily and weekly newspapers of the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California. Because I was a media sponge, I readily volunteered to to earn professional experience beyond that of a mere writer and photographer. Thanks in part to guys such as Al Balderas, who last I heard works sports at the Orange County Register, I also dabbled in page editing as well as layout and design (paginating as a paginator) for the weekly throwaways associated with what was then the L.A. Newsgroup, consisting of the Whittier Daily Press, Pasadena Star and San Gabriel Valley Tribune dailies.

During the time, I was an avid backpacker and hitch hiker, logging solo excursions well into the Angeles National Forest as well as the San Bernardino National Forest. And because I was also into off-road scene, I jumped at the opportunity to sign on for an off-road race with Jim Ober at Trackside Photo. I hooked up with Ober through a fellow photographer and mentor by the name of Leo Jarzomb at the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. In addition to Jarzomb’s recommendation of Ober for the purchase of used Nikon equipment, which is a really bad idea considering the beating an off-road race photographer can inflict upon a camera, I also picked on one of my dad’s copies of the Press Photographers Association of Greater Los Angeles newsletter, an organization he was a longtime honorary member of.

The first assignment was a SCORE San Felipe 250 race that earned me a double truck shot of Robby Gordon in Off Road Magazine as well as some reproductions in a multitude of other national newspapers thanks to BFGoodrich public relations (PR) efforts. I continued work with Trackside Photo while freelancing for off-road industry print publications as well as the conventional newspaper publications.

I still maintained some presence in school. I am on the crux of multiple college associates degrees that include English, journalism, photography, art and maybe even one other degree I partially forget. In spite of an acute interest and working knowledge of a career in media, I began to contemplate rededicating my educational pursuits in a longtime urge in the mathematical and physics. I began my collegiate studies in the social sciences, partly inspired by my uncle, who is a professor of sociology a UC Davis. But throughout my high school years and even to this day to a lesser degree, I have delved deeply into the world of physics and found great fancy with the myriad of theories therein. The paradoxical mixture of intense logic mated to a masterpiece of virtual imagination derived from remote viewing only to arrive at an even more perplexing theory of truth was an amusing quest that even still causes me to fathom such an endeavor in education.

I once vehemently defied a elementary college professor who asserted that a certain algebraic therum must be adhered to in order to arrive at an accurate answer. I then skipped a few classes going so far to miss a test only to arrive with a workaround to the obvious. I approached him near the of that class and laid my homework upon his desk. He was surrounded by students seeking test scores and assistance on the day’s study.

He sharply responded without even turning to address me in the eye: “I have had enough. I don’t have time for this.” he replied.

The beginning of the next class he called me up. With a sense of friendship rekindled, he spoke: “I think you found a new therum. I am going to present this to a few colleagues.”

In spite of my love for the stringent mechanics of mathematics, it was an extremely difficult genre to maintain interest in for any given period of time. During my studies, I often pondered the possibilities for far too long or simply lost interest somewhere in between surfing of skateboarding.

Did I mention I was the first place amateur for the state of California (CASL). Yep. Used to dig skate skating vert ramps. While we had a series of killer ramps that many pros frequented just off the 210 freeway in Azusa, my favorite vert ramp was none other than that of Lance Mountain’s steel-plated vert ramp in Alhambra.

Did I mention I launched Lance Mountain’s Twitter account? Even after an email to him and several old close friends that we share, he has yet to claim the account. Even still, the Twitter account continues to rack up followers. As I’ve said when referring to the world of social media, it’s own or be owned, sucka.

Anyhow, I had always wanted to go beyond the mere role of a freelance writer or photographer at a newspaper and secure a staff position. While the money was good and the freedom to indulge in wanton vacations of adventure had become standard, I opted to downgrade my lifestyle to some extent to pursue my longtime ambitions to become a newspaper staffer.

Placing the feelers out and about, I photographer position arose at a small daily. This might have been good, since there was flexibility to take on some writing assignments. But as per memory, writing would likely deem difficult do to financially-controlled staff shortages and possible duties that would be akin to a photo editor. Weird stuff.

By this time, I had developed a great family of friends in the off-road industry and accumulated great contacts that extended into the automotive and powersports industry. Opportunities availed themselves regularly. My work frequented editorial and advertising efforts internationally. And in the midst, several wild-eyed computer geeks with a haphazard website were prodding me to work for them. They had been at it for quite some time.

And at one SCORE San Felipe 250 off-road race, I finally gave them the lowdown on my ambitions. I needed to land a staff position as a writer for a daily newspaper. They scoffed and belittled the idea. One guy wore dolphin shorts. The other wore piercings throughout what he claimed was the whole of his body, walked like a penguin, barked like a pirate and was known for piloting Glamis Sand Dunes aboard a Quadzilla (Suzuki LT-500).

Quick with the wit and heavy on the humor, my retort resisted the peer pressure of signing on with the gaggle of pseudo web geeks.

Shortly thereafter, a good friend and photo editor called me up for some assistance with a few photo assignments for the Santa Clarita Signal. I eagerly took them on when possible. The more exciting assignments certainly earned greater favor amid a conflicting schedule. The Love Ride that featured George Thourgood and Jay Leno was among those.

The friend who called upon me was none other than ace shooter Dan Watson, a Los Angeles press photographer who was born of an internationally known family of photographers, whom I refer to as The Watson Family.

Anyhow, after some time, Dan called me into the office, requesting I bring a writing portfolio, if I was interested in a writing position in the sports department. He clued me in on the deal and the man behind the wheel of the daily section.

I arrived to meet up with Terry Johnson. The guy was a kick in the pants, extremely adept in his craft, pointedly honest and notably loyal, as I would inevitably learn. But I did not immediately take the position.

Instead, during yet another era of life and at the threshold of opportunity, I opted to call upon a few editors and associate editors in the automotive industry who had standing offers to discuss staff positions. After a few weeks and great consideration, I figured it was now or never for securing a real newspaper gig. In spite of my respect for the trade and admiration for the aroma of fresh ink on newsprint spinning through the hot presses, I highly doubted I would ever return, since my taste for the fast action of motorsports and action sports more suited my adventurous lifestyle.

I never felt the relatively conservative and politically liberal print pages of a newspaper were suitable for the way of life I had chosen and the wild-eyed writing style that accompanied it. My average day off during those years might include walking the gang-laden streets of Los Angeles for great conversation and a few photos or a midnight waltz along a mountain range. That’s just the way it was and from where my words were born.

I’ve been in the crossfire of shootouts. Watched otherwise macho gangsters piss their pants from fear and cry out for mommy when their gun jammed or they simply stared down the barrel of death without recourse. I have seem these gangsters without fathers submit themselves to peril and watched them die. I have hitchhiked and played hobo on trains. I have toured the country and fallen in love with a great nation and its people. For this I am forever in debt to the spirit of its forefathers.

And I have never lived the American dream. I became the American dream. No many newspapers boast of such abundance.

So, back behind the wheel, I took on the position as sports writer, primarily covering prep sports but managed to produce some pro bylines as well. Sports was never really my forte. I loved what is the greatest single-balled sport on earth, soccer, and even became quite good at it, attaining professional-level skills prior to the reintroduction of professional soccer here in the United States. Just two weeks prior to a U-19 club tournament trip to Europe, I severely sprained an ankle. At the time, I thought it was a re-break of one of the skateboard breaks I had sustained during my youth.

And my dad had forewarned me time and time again about playing with the Mexican teams, citing the belligerently rowdy players who were accustomed to fist fights to right a bad call by the ref and the dangerously poor soccer fields riddled with gopher holes and busted beer bottles. For me, the illegal alien pickup games were the next best thing to a game of rugby and a barroom brawl. Mate that to the fact that I consider soccer as physically-demanding chess game of intellect, and you too might see the opportunity tough to resist.

So, instead of sitting around having tamales and menudo with my dad that Sunday morning, I was performing the impressionist artistry of eloquently dancing amid limb-threatening gofer holes, dribbling the ball down the left side line, taking in a cheap shot to the kidney and winding up the right leg for a clear shop up into the upper left corner of the goal, when peril struck. My angle drilled down into the depths of a golfer hole, while the momentum carried an otherwise glorious moment into infamy.

It was until the Mexicans carried tossed me into some beat-up jalopy with a luke-warm six pack of Budweiser wrapped around my ankle that I realized the extent of my dad’s warnings. Minutes later, with an ankle that had ballooned up into a semi-deflated volleyball, I found myself draped over the shoulders of some Mexicans, clad in soccer jerseys that smelt as they hadn’t been washed in several games, which as was the case included the putrid aroma of a smoked pig from last week’s after game barbecue in addition to the case of beer and hangover that ensued.

We were at the doorsteps of what was referred to as a witch doctor. I used every excuse in the book for them to leave me to my own accord. They insisted. While I protested that they deliver me to the Kaiser Permanente building just a few miles south, they earnestly offered to compensate the witch doctor for his troubles in treating me. I had the unique impression that it was an honor to be seen by the guy. In addition to the accolades they enlisted in describing the witch doctor was the fact that they each pitched in a few bucks of their own hard-earned money to have one guy run around the corner to Rosalie’s Market there on the corner of Fifth Street and Virginia Avenue as due compensation for the treatment I was to receive from the witch doctor.

Amid all the broken bones and the laundry list of injuries and array of well-meaning hospital visits I have had throughout the years, this injury was certainly one of the worse pains I have experienced. And this pain remained so up until the witch doctor got his hands on the excruciating limb. Performing obscure voodoo that I only partially recall, the guy alleviated a considerable amount of pain and swelling that failed to return with the same ferocity.

In spite of his efforts, though, I was a no-show for the plane ride to Europe. This was despite x-rays confirming the injury was nothing more than a severe sprain. My ambitions to play soccer at Liberty University were also justifiably doomed. For more than a year the ankle remained black and purple and as raw as turtle’s skin. And each attempt at playing soccer thereafter resulted in the reemergence of the limp. The persistent drive to play soccer at the same level led to the realization that I was better off coaching. I later found coaching professionally to be a far more lucrative endeavor.

You see, I had broken my ankles before. First time, I was on a five-foot high ramp attempting some first-ever stunt that would now be considered a beginner’s move. Physically, that was the worse break. I earned a cast up to my crotch for that ankle break. The doctor said once you break that, you don’t walk for a good while. I questioned him.

“Just how do you think I got home?” He didn’t believe it much, but I did manage hobble home under my own power, resorting to my skateboard as a walker/wheelchair on occasion. Thanks goes out to Karl Gilbert for the escort home.

Second time around we were engaged in a hot dog hoedown at the Azusa Ramps. We had just finished rebuilding the vert ramp. I remember the day well. As if we were in need of any reason whatsoever, it was cause for celebration. I had just returned from a hot dog-and-drink run to Certified Market located off of Vernon Avenue with a friend by the name of Ray Barbee. Haven’t heard much of the guy quite a while, but Barbee was a way-cool black dude who skated pro, always busting out smiles with his brilliant ivory teeth and always shuffled down some sweetly-executed street tricks. And when he migrated from the street to a ramp, his game was much the same, taking those street tricks with him. That was Ray Barbee.

Allow me to digress once again. It was that trip to Certified Market when Barbee and I were about to hop into the car. I vaguely remember the particulars but recall some bigot shouting out a few n-words at the guy. I laid the groceries down and charged at the guy some several cars down. Barbee intervened without hesitation. In a calm voice that even still wore a smile, he coerced me into the car, and we were on our way.

Back at the ramp, it was a friendly snake pit for the vert action. I went up for what was some sort of leaping invert to fakie that might have well been real cool had I not lawn-darted onto the transition upon my ankle. All the action upon the ramps stopped at the sound of the large crack reverberated off the masonite walls.

While at that instant, the pain was easily bearable, the realization that I might suffer another five months on crutches, hobbling 2.5 miles back and forth to Gladstone High School some five days a week threw me for an emotional loop. I didn’t shed a tear but was screaming so profusely out of anger that I should have been.

So, then again we were pounding out stiff-neck newspaper prose before an archaic Power Mac 8600 with Terry Johnson busting jokes from within the slot. The guy never missed a beat until the day he died. They held a memorial at Dodger Stadium as a tribute to the man. Dodger Blue was his beat. He knew it inside and out. He was an artisan of the craft. He’d send us over final edits with some insanely hilarious headlines and second graphs. Most of the shenanigans that went on might never be repeated. It was just that good. And if you were too blitzed and brain baked from cranking out 20-inchers throughout the day’s shift and couldn’t catch one of this classic TJ ruses, he’d send it off to Kenny the plate maker just to have you drop your jaw and have you let loose of a brick. They guy was way to sharp to allow any shenanigans to make their way onto the paper but certainly bold enough to get a most memorable laugh out of you that you might just take to your own grave.

Just when I was getting in my zone at the paper, TJ reeled me in after dropping in between two assignments. In a semi-mournful moment, he announced he was leaving. Then, he announced I was the new sports editor, bolstering a boisterous laugh that accompanied his very own chorus of sarcastic applause.

We’d been through quite a bit together. I was honored with much schooling from the master sports writer. He had worked some 400-odd days straight without break. I had undergone the death threat from Canyon High School coach and the accompanied threat of his principal (great story of sticking to your editorial guns and an editor’s loyalty). We shared the same laughs after prank calling the L.A. Times, the L.A. Daily News, the Associated Press and a slew of others that spanned the country. And with each one, he knew exactly the right button to push for the best of laughs. All in good fun, it was TJ’s way of saying hello.

Myself, after a few months behind the slot, I received an email. It was just your average email that one might receive if he was a member of Tony Tellier’s Cheeze List, an off-road racing insider’s email list, consisting of all the main veins of the off-road racing industry. It was an email from Dolphin Shorts himself, the man behind the wheel of the second largest motorsports website in the world, Off-Road.com. While the email was somewhat unrelated, as per my memory, it did have a noted prod. My response was to book me for a round trip ticket to Las Vegas.

A few days later, we were gathered around a dim-lit table in the bowels of some swanky Las Vegas local’s bar, discussing about as much business as the average street bumb on L.A.’s skidrow after a bout with Boones Farm. And that’s about how pointless the meeting ultimately amounted to.

Just a few days thereafter, I was once again making the rounds to a few other standing opportunities. The most noted interview of all was none other than the top-selling off-road mag on the rack, Four Wheeler Magazine. The editor was a thin-skinned liberal basted with a hint of eco-freak but my way in between the pages was the publisher, a classy and notably professional man that offered up the position to the horror of the clown that played a great role as a religiously-bigoted Democrat.

And with the offer, I asked one question, and it pertained to coverage of the quickly approaching Baja 2000. Since the race was viewed with little interest, requiring me to post my own finances for the effort of a possible two-page article, I made way to Vegas within weeks, which led me to this entry into my memoir.

Picking through the old boxes this evening, I laid memory onto an HTML For Dummies book. Managing to make my way only through a few pages, the book was virtually worthless upon my arrival at the gaggle of characters that amassed at the offices of Off-Road.com. The aimless ship was without regiment and its new star player had no clue about the web.
