La pegada del brasileño Pato, autor de dos goles en el Clasico de Europa entre Real Madrid y Milan (2-3), resucito al equipo italiano, que supo concretar los errores del Madrid ante un estilo de juego del Milan muy bueno.

El Real Madrid no sabe ganar encuentros ante rivales de esta calidad. En su primera prueba en Sevilla fue hecho pedazos por momentos. Ante un Milan, alejado del dominio del pasado, encajo la segunda derrota. Dolorosa por graves errores individuales y por dejar escapar la oportunidad de sentenciar el Grupo.

El estado de los equipos no rebaja el atractivo de un Clasico Europeo. Real Madrid y Milan han representado 16 Copas de Europa. Han engrandecido a la competicion mas prestigiosa del “Viejo Continente”.

A un futbolista como Cristiano Ronaldo siempre se le echa de menos, pero en encuentros como el que planteo Leonardo a Manuel Pellegrini aun mas. La derrota milanista en casa ante el Zurich le obliga a quemar sus opciones apostando por el ataque. Dos equipos con tres delanteros en el campo. Espacios para el portugues que se lamenta en su palco, del tobillo maltrecho.

Real Madrid y Milan se atraparon de inicio en un futbol falto de ritmo. La ilusion de Kaka, en el reencuentro con el equipo que multiplico su dimension, tiro de un conjunto que no encuentra la brillantez de un estilo.

Las bajas atacan al conjunto madridista. Impidieron a ultima hora la titularidad de Gonzalo Higuain. Permitieron una nueva oportunidad para Benzema. Perdido por momentos sobre el cesped, brillante en acciones aisladas.

El Milan resucito para llevarse el primer triunfo de la historia en el Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. Hace crecer las dudas en torno a Pellegrini. El Clasico de Europa. La madre de todos los partidos escribio una pagina mas de un duelo repleto de pasion.

Bisognava vincere, e lo si è fatto.
La mancanza di risultati pieni, da tempo, ha portato un’insicurezza che non poteva svanire da un momento all’altro.
Non basta cambiare la disposizione degli uomini in campo per risolvere tutti i problemi.

Sono “costretto”, per l’ennesima volta, a scrivere parole d’elogio per Buffon: senza di lui, anche stavolta avremmo potuto passare guai peggiori.
Al portiere della nazionale ho espresso due veri e propri ringraziamenti in vita mia: quando ha accettato di scendere in serie B (da campione del mondo) in bianconero, e quando ha resistito alle lusinghe di alcune squadre (anche italiane) l’anno successivo.
Mi auguro che da qui al termine della carriera possa ancora alzare numerosi trofei.
Non solo perché gioca per la mia (nostra) squadra, ma anche perché se lo meriterebbe. Più di altri.
Nei suoi confronti, oltre alla stima, nel sottoscritto c’è anche la riconoscenza del tifoso che ragiona oltre la singola partita del momento.

Ottimo Giovinco, in ripresa Diego, bel rientro a pieno regime di Sissoko, bravo Chiellini.

Il Bordeaux vince contro il Bayern Monaco: avrei preferito un pareggio.

In compenso, un grandissimo Milan (nonostante Dida) riesce a compiere l’impresa di vincere al Santiago Bernabeu contro il Real Madrid.
Con l’alone di antipatìa che si è ri-creata dopo la faraonica campagna acquisti dello scorso mercato (nello specifico, Platini non si è fatto sfuggire l’occasione per rimarcare l’eccessiva spesa per Cristiano Ronaldo a Perez), la squadra spagnola si è fatta battere in casa: Pirlo (monumentale) e Pato (due volte).

Ricapitolando: Juventus e Fiorentina seconde nel loro girone; il Milan, in coabitazione col Real, primo.
L’Inter? Ultima.

Per loro, comunque, è già pronta un’altra Champions League…

In what seemed to be a fatal error for Dida, Raul would go on to score for Real. That Magnificant goal by Pirlo put Milan back on the score board.

And Pato would go on to save the day by score in the 66′ minutes of play time. He would go on to score again after a beautiful lobbed pass by Clarence Seedorf! Milan would take the Win with 3 goals to 2. Both teams now stands with 6 points each in the tournament.

Era un noche para asustar, para demostrar a Europa que el gran Madrid había vuelto. Un débil Milan era la víctima perfecta. Pero la realidad siempre supera a la ficción. Los rossoneros eran un cementerio y en el Bernabéu resucitaron gracias a la parálisis de los blancos.

Sólo Raúl se salvó en los locales. Marcó un gol, dio otro y durante muchos minutos fue el único que presionó a un lento Milan. El Madrid cayó en la trampa de la pachanga y se durmió profundamente. Los de Leonardo se pusieron por delante, Drenthe empató y Pato marcó el gol de la victoria en un final trepidante y lleno de errores.

El Madrid jugó muy mal, pero eso no es noticia. Sí lo es que pierda en casa ante unos jugadores que no corrían a más de 2 kilómetros por hora. Raúl volvió a demostrar que es el más listo de Europa. Aprovechó un rechace de Dida a un disparo de Granero para ridiculizar al portero y ampliar su leyenda goleadora en el Viejo Continente. Antes, el árbitro se tragó un penalti clarísimo sobre Benzema.

A partir del gol, el Madrid respiró el mismo somnífero que su rival y el partido decayó hasta lo incalificable. Antes del descanso, sólo Marcelo dispuso de una ocasión para ampliar la ventaja. Por lo demás, nada. La segunda parte vino acompañada de la locura. Kaká surgió en su única aparición del partido, pero Dida estuvo lo fino que no había estado en el gol. Luego Raúl lo intentó de vaselina, pero el portero brasileño estuvo bien anclado en su sitio.

Tras estos acercamientos blancos, llegó el gol del Milan. Pirlo se sacó un zapatazo desde 40 metros sin avisar y a Casillas lo pilló despistado. Cuatro minutos después, Ambrosini diseñó un buen pase a la espalda de la defensa y Casillas salió ridículamente sin rumbo para dejar a Pato el segundo tanto en bandeja.

300 millones de euros después, en el Bernabéu se volvía a apelar a la heroica. En una de esas, Raúl acudió a sacar un córner después de que ningún compañero mostrara la voluntad de acercarse al banderín. El ‘7′ vio a Drenthe en la frontal y el holandés la ajustó al palo, lejos del alcance de Dida. La grada rememoraba las grandes e históricas remontadas europeas.

Pero esta vez no llegaría. Es más, el Madrid acabó perdiendo. Casillas apareció para salvar el tercero. Luego lo hizo el árbitro para anular un gol legal de Sergio Ramos en propia puerta. Pero nadie salió a taponar a Seedorf, que tras controlar tranquilamente en el área, centró a Pato para que marcara el gol de la victoria en el 88′.

El Madrid perdió contra un equipo que venía moribundo y que jugó andando. Lo peor de todo es que los blancos no merecieron otra cosa. La pegada está bien los días que se presenta, pero cuando decide faltar, el Madrid se paraliza de tal manera que no es capaz de reaccionar. Crítica especial para Kaká, máxima estrella en ausencia de Cristiano, que no se atreve a tomar el timón en los partidos importantes. A día de hoy, la Décima es un sueño lejano.

Resumen del Real Madrid 2-3 AC Milan

Partido malo de solemnidad en el Bernabeu.El pasotismo del Madrid resucitó al Milán. Entre los dos equipos fueron incapaces de dar tres pases seguidos. Kaká, desastroso en su reencuentro con el AC.

Comenzó el partido y lo hizo con un tremendo respeto entre ambos contendientes. Parecía como si estuviésemos ante una final de la gloriosa competición y no ante un partido de la liguilla de grupos. Tardamos bastante en ver los primeros acercamientos, todos del Madrid ante el planteamiento del Milán, que renunció a disputar el partido desde el inicio.

Una pena ver a estos jugadores. Uno no puede evitar que se le venga a la mente lo que han sido y lo que son. Ronaldinho, por ejemplo, está para soltar tres o cuatro filigranas, pero poco más. Juega pegado a la izquierda, como si aparecer por el resto del campo le supusiera un esfuerzo que no puede -ni quiere- afrontar. Da grima verle con el número 80 a la espalda, por cierto.

Los primeros escarceos, decía, fueron blancos. Benzema, mucho más enchufado al partido que en el choque liguero ante el Valladolid, fue víctima de un clamoroso panalty cometido por Zambrotta. Es alucinante que el línea no vea como cazan al delantero francés, pero con los arbitrajes champions ya se sabe, o te rebanan la pierna u olvídate de que te piten algo así en la primera parte. El árbitro era sobradamente conocido. El año pasado hizo un flaco favor a los blancos en su partido ante el Liverpool.

En esas llegó el ratonero mayor para poner a su equipo por delante. Una triangulación entre Benzema y Granero terminó con un chut de este a las manos de Dida. Sin embargo, el portero pensó en la siguiente acción antes de acabar la primera. Fruto de ello se le escurrió la pelota y Raúl, siempre al quite en este tipo de jugadas, le arañó la pelota y la empujó a las mallas por sexagesimosexta (66) vez en Champions. Raúl nunca falla en este tipo de lides. Le pedíamos un gol en la previa y aceptó el desafío antes de que se cumpliera el primer tercio de partido.

A partir del gol la iniciativa correspondió al Milan. Se jugaba más en el partido y el resultado le dejaba muy tocado en el grupo, por lo que se veía obligado a cambiar el chip y buscar sus opciones en ataque. El Madrid no se opuso a ello,  no crean, ya sabemos que quitarle la pelota no es precisamente difícil y los rossonerri lo hicieron sin demasiados apuros. Eso sí, ocasiones, ni una. Ronaldinho facilitaba la labor defensiva al buscar una y otra vez el mismo pase a la espalda de los centrales. Estaba demasiado lejos como para pillar desprevenida una defensa formada por Albiol y Pepe. Lo bueno para el Madrid era que como el Milan jugaba sin bandas, los errores de Ramos y Marcelo a la hora de volver de sus subidas no eran tan graves como de costumbre. El de Camas sigue en un estado que dista del que se espera de él y no duden que Arbeloa va a aprovecharse de ello. O espabila o le esperan largas tardes de banquillo al sevillano.

La segunda parte el horror se apoderó del Bernabeu. Con un simple cambio táctico Leonardo situó a su Milan en disposición de ganar el partido. Nunca sabremos si fue la variación táctica o la pachorra del Madrid la que provocó la debacle. Xabi Alonso mostró la peor de sus caras, Kaká entregaba la pelota una y otra vez a los jugadores rojinegros como si su mente siguiera en Milán, y Casillas, salvador tantas veces del Madrid, se convirtió en verdugo por un día. Primero se come un disparo lejano de Andrea Pirlo. Es un golazo pero Casillas tarda un siglo en reaccionar. El segundo fue de traca: Ambrosini encuentra a Pato en el hueco y Casillas sale a cortar el balón, hasta ahí todo normal, pero se lanza fuera del área y duda si meter la cabeza o la mano. Como suele pasar en estas ocasiones, terminó por ver pasar la palota sin hacer nada y Pato, sin oposición, solo tuvo que empujarla a la red. Increíble pero cierto, los dinosaurios se ponían por delante ante un equipo hecho a golpe de talonario y reúne algunos de los mejores jugadores del mundo.

El gol sacó al Madrid de su letargo y Pellegrini tuvo en el cambio de Drenthe por Granero toda su reacción. El holandés sería a la postre el revulsivo de su equipo en un gol para el análisis. Córner favorable al Real Madrid y Granero, que hasta ese momento era el encargado de sacar las jugadas a balón parado, en el banquillo. Todos se miran y nadie se decide a ir a por la pelota. Al final es Raúl, quien si no, el pone el balón en juego. Busca a Drenthe en la frontal con un balón en semifallo y nadie del Milan sale a tapar. Drenthe suelta un zapatazo y gol. Desconozco las probabilidades que hay de que todas estas acciones se dieran de forma consecutiva, pero desde luego debían ser escasas.

Tras esto vino la locura. Raúl hizo un gol fantasma que el árbitro se ahorró por fuera de juego y en la siguiente jugada Casillas saca un pie providencial a disparo de Pato. A la salida del córner Ramos introduce el balón en su portería y el árbitro señala solo dios sabe qué. En la posterior tangana Ronaldiho suelta un un manotazo a Raúl, que había ido a separar y ve como todos le dan una tobita. El colegiado lo salda con tarjeta a Nesta y Raúl. Pues bien.

Pero la noche aún nos tenía deparada otra sorpresa. Seedorf, uno de los jugadores más capaces del Milan, recibe el balón dentro del área merengue, se toma un café, habla un rato con su mujer y pone el balón al segundo palo donde Pato estaba ¡solo! para empujarla.

Con esta derrota el Madrid se complica y mucho la existencia. Tiene 6 puntos, igual que el Milan, al que rinde visita en la próxima jornada. Si no saca nada positivo, se jugará la clasificación en Marsella, un campo nada fácil. Luego recibe al Zurich en lo que supone un mero trámite. Vaya lío en el que se han metido, y todo por pasar olímpicamente del choque. Eso sí, no creo que estén muy cansados porque el ritmo del partido de hoy lo aguanta cualqueira. Hasta el Milan.

As Milan took on Real Madrid in the Bernabeu earlier on today, most people were looking foward to seeing Madrid midfielder Kaka come up againts his former team or Ronaldinho to shine once more againts the all whites.. However one kid stole the show and outperformed both superstars in this exciting clash of Giants.

Alexandre Pato, (the duck) of AC Milan was a terror to the Spanish sides defence all night and took his first ever goals in the champions league expertly to bring back three precious points with him as he returns home.

Madrid capitalized on a spectacular Dida blunder to open the scoring in the first half but Pirlo equalized in the 60th minute as Milan dramatically improved in the second half gaining the lead through Pato who cleverly skipped over an outrushing Cassillas to score into an empty net, and later score the match winner after Drenthe equalized for Madrid and Thiago Silva had a Late goal controversially dissallowed.

Let’s hope Dunga and the Brazilian technical staff were watching.

Real Madrid y AC Milan, los dos clubes europeos más laureados, jugarán en el Santiago Bernabéu un partido lleno de reencuentros. Kaká, Huntelaar, Ronaldinho, Seedorf… Son muchos los que tienen una vieja historia en común con el equipo rival o con el escenario de la cita.

Pasado aparte, el presente dibuja un Madrid en construcción que sueña con la final en su estadio y retrata a un conjunto rossonero repleto de viejas glorias, octavos en el Calcio y que se ha complicado sobremanera su clasificación para los octavos de la Champions. A pesar de ello, un Madrid-Milan es de lo mejor que se puede ver hoy en día en Europa.

El protagonismo principal es para Kaká. El brasileño se enfrenta al equipo que se lo dio todo y lo convirtió en estrella mundial. Ya ha asegurado que quiere marcarle goles al Milan, pero que no los celebrará. Será muy especial para él, aunque más lo será la vuelta, ante su ex afición.

Pero hay más reencuentros. Huntelaar clama venganza por los que no confiaron en él. Vino en enero y se marchó en julio. Jamás entró en los planes de Pellegrini (ni en los de Florentino y Valdano). Otro que vuelve al que fue su estadio es Clarence Seedorf. El holandés dejó un buen sabor de boca en la afición blanca, que todavía hoy recuerda aquel gol al Atlético de Madrid desde el centro del campo.

¿Y Ronaldinho? Pues el brasileño regresa al Bernabéu, donde fue aplaudido un lejano noviembre de 2005. Aquel partido que acabó 0-3 dio la vuelta al mundo, al igual que los aplausos que recibió el que por aquellas fechas era el mejor jugador del mundo. También dos madridistas tienen un gran recuerdo del Milan. No por haber jugado allí, sino contra ellos. Son Dudek y Xabi Alonso, que remontaron un 0-3 en una de las finales de Copa de Europa más impresionantes de la historia.

El Madrid, aunque todavía no tiene bien engranada su maquinaria, es favorito para este partido. Pellegrini alineará a los mismos que frente al Valladolid, con la entrada de Kaká por Van der Vaart. Quizás entre también Higuaín por un discutido Benzema. El francés no termina de explotar y ya siente la presión en la nuca del argentino.

El Milan nunca ha ganado en el Bernabéu, pero necesita la victoria como el comer. Perdió en casa contra el Zúrich y se ha complicado en exceso la clasificación. La clase de Pirlo, el eterno Inzaghi, un renacido Ronaldinho y la rapidez de Pato son las principales armas rossoneras. Por pasado y por presente, partidazo en el Bernabéu.

Prediksi

Untuk edisi kali ini, perhatian saiya tertuju ke pertandingan antara Real Madrid vs AC Milan. Saiya kira banyak yang sependapat dengan saiya. Selain keduanya adalah klub raksasa di ranah eropa, kebanyakan dari kita juga pengin melihat “reuni”-nya Kaka dengan mantan klubnya, AC Milan. Saiya sendiri pengin melihat bagaimana keprofesionalan si Kaka dalam menghadapi situasi ini dan selebrasi macam apa yang akan dilakukan seandainya dia mencetak gol ke gawang AC Milan. Mudah-mudahan niat saiya ini kesampaian.

“Lhahh… berarti sampiyan menjagokan Real Madrid yang akan memenangkan pertandingan?”

Yup, demikianlah.”

“Bukankah bola itu bundar?”

“Benar. Tapi prediksi saiya Real Madrid akan menang setidaknya dengan selisih dua goal”

“Kok bisa?”

“AC Milan sekarang sedang compang-camping sodara. Kemenangan atas AS Roma kemaren tidaklah serta merta menunjukkan bahwa klub yang dikomandoi oleh Leonardo itu telah menemukan permainan terbaiknya. Masih jauh sodara, Milan masih compang-camping.”

“Tapi kalau main di Liga Champions, AC Milan selalu bermain sangat baik lhoo…”

“Arghh… sapa bilang. Waktu bertanding lawan FC Zurich dikandangya sendiri aja keok, apalagi kali ini mereka akan bertandang ke kandangnya Real Madrid. Jelas sangat sulit. Bahkan untuk membawa pulang satu poin pun…. rasanya kok ndak mungkin.”

“Wahhh… sampiyan meremehkan AC Milan rupanya…”

“Kali ini AC Milan memang pantas untuk diremehkan. Meski Real Madrid terkadang juga angin-anginan, tapi kayaknya ndak bakalan kesusahan untuk menerbangkan AC Milan ke dasar jurang. Maaf dahh buat para pendukungnya AC Milan, saiya harus berkata jujur.”

“Kenapa sampiyan bisa ngomong seperti itu? Bisa dikasih tau alasannnya?”

“Ok. Selain Real Madrid bertindak sebagai tuan rumah… secara tim, mereka lebih padu dan lebih lengkap. Casilas, Pepe, Diara dan Metzelder sangat kuat di lini belakang dan ndak bakal kesulitan untuk mementahkan serangan Pato maupun Inzagi.

Di tengah Kaka bersama Xabi Alonso, Guti dan Gago lebih bertenaga dan lebih kreatif. Rasanya Ambrosini, Pirlo maupun Gatuzo akan kesusahan mengimbangi pergerakan Kaka cs. Meski kebadakan Gatuzo mungkin saja bisa mengacaukannya, tapi ini justru bisa menjadi boomerang. AC Milan bisa bermain tidak dengan 11 pemain.

Raul masih subur. Karim Benzema juga sudah sering mencetak goal. Kalau pun C. Ronaldo ndak dimainkan, mereka masih punya Van Nistelrooy dan Higuain yang bisa memporakporandakan pertahanan old crack ala AC Milan.

Jika Maldini masih main, mungkin ceritanya agak lain. Meski sudah berumur, dia mampu menggalang pertahanan dengan baik dan bisa menaikan moril pemain lainnya. Sayang dia sudah pensiun. Dan siyalnya lagi, Nesta ndak mampu mengambil alih kepemimpinan ala Maldini kala menjadi komandan di lini belakang.

Begitulah alasan saiya sodara.”

“Arghhh… sampiyan terlalu yakin…”

“Coba katakan kepada saiya, alasan macam apa yang sampiyan pegang hingga sampiyan bisa berpendapat bahwa AC Milan bisa memenangkan pertandingan atau mencuri angka dari Real Madrid… selain alasan bahwa bola itu budar dan semuanya itu bisa saja terjadi….??”

A side in decline?

Another mundane week of Champions League group stage fixtures has passed and for the most part the natural order has been maintained. Powerhouses like Barcelona, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Arsenal all won. Continental rivals Bayern Munich and Juventus played out an entertaining draw at the Allianz Arena. Liverpool were humbled by an impressive Fiorentina but La Viola are formidable at home. There was one result from Game Week Two though that really stood out. It came from the San Siro where seven times champions AC Milan were beaten 1-0 by the minnows of FC Zurich.

After a lacklustre start to the season under the stewardship of Leonardo, Milan fans are beginning to grumble. With an ageing squad misfiring, and a run of poor results showing no sign of ending, the rookie coach received the dreaded “vote of confidence” from the board this afternoon. For the time being Leonardo should be alright for the simple fact that he is a Milan legend, a company man. Even if he is relieved of his coaching duties will still remain at the club. He was a director before taking charge of the 1st team and if things continue to go south that’s the position he’ll return to.

Under pressure

If nothing else Leonardo will always be the man credited for bringing Kaka to Italy. How he would love to be able to call upon the services of his magical compatriot at the moment. While Kaka is lighting up the Bernabeu alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, his former team mates are finding life much more difficult in his absence. Lying 11th in Serie A, with 8 points after six games, is not a start to be envied. Hopes in Europe were higher after an opening day victory at Marseille but Wednesday’s defeat to Zurich is a new low. It is hard to see where the side goes from here.

The starting XI last night featured eight players the wrong side of 30. Greats of the game like Alessandro Nesta, Andrea Pirlo and Clarence Seedorf still command the utmost of respect on paper from opposing teams. But on the pitch there is little doubt that the ravages of time have caught up with them. Others like Massimo Ambrosini, Pippo Inzaghi and Marek Jankulovski have all had their moments over the years but nowadays those moments are few and far between.

Sometimes known as Calamity Kaladze

Likewise Kakha Kaladze, but anyone who saw Georgia’s defeat to Italy in Ireland’s qualifying group for the World Cup, in which he scored two own goals, will know just how much damage Kaladze is capable of causing for his own team.

Young guns like Mathieu Flamini and Alexander Pato, on whom so much has been invested, are struggling in a side that doesn’t play with any pace or purpose. Pato has all the tools to be a superstar but you fear for the boy in the current setup.

Not smiling as much these days

On the theme of a lack of purpose it is worth mentioning the decline of Ronaldinho, who’s three year drop from the peak of the world game shoes no sign of abating. He didn’t even start last night. When Kaka departed in the summer the airwaves were filled with propaganda telling us all how the buck toothed Brazilian had refound his form. Ronaldinho had left his party lifestyle behind and was ready to take the game by storm again. Alas the early signs in season 2009-2010 are not encouraging. When you can’t command a starting place at home to FC Zurich serious questions have to be asked.

Perhaps it is not surprising that Milan are a team on the slide. The loss of Kaka was always likely to be a major blow but investment from the proceeds of his sale have not been up to scratch. Cover at centre half was always going to be a vital area to consider and the signing of Oguchi Onyewu from Standard Liege was hardly one to set the pulses racing. The US international is not a bad player, certainly a step up on last years fill in Phillipe Senderos, but this is AC Milan we’re talking about here. The AC Milan of Franco Baresi, Mauro Tassotti, Billy Costacurta and Paolo Maldini. When the brittle Nesta breaks down, as he is almost sure to do at some stage, you expect a top class replacement to be on hand. What we have nowadays is Onyewu and that speaks volumes.

Yet to find form

Another major summer signing was Dutch striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar from Real Madrid. The tall hitman was treated disgracefully at Madrid, unable even to claim a Champions League squad place following an administrative mishap and preference for Lass Diarra. He still managed to score 8 goals in 12 games in Spain and has the look of a player goals will always come naturally to. Provided he gets the right service. In the current Milan team however creativity is at a premium with the San Siro crowd having witnessed only one goal from their side in four home games this season. And it’s worth remembering that one of those was a four nil hammering in the Milan derby at the hands of bitter rivals Inter.

Indeed Huntelaar’s frame of mind cannot have been eased much further considering the knowledge he was second choice behind Edin Dzeko to help soften the blow of Kaka’s departure. Having seen Dzeko in action at Old Trafford last night he looks like the kind of player who can make things happen on his own. Considering the slump Milan are in he would have fitted the bill perfectly and should have been pursued with more vigour. That he continue’s to flourish at Wolfsburg is yet another indictment of Milan’s recruitment policy over the past year. It is also a clear sign that the Berlusconi family are tired of the club and are looking for a suitable buyer.

So are AC Milan the team that time forgot? More than likely yes but there’s still hope. It is only six games into the league season and while a tilt at the title is perhaps a long shot there is enough talent on hand to secure a top four finish. Europe will stretch their resources even further but three points after two games is not a disaster. Defeats home and away to Real Madrid are probable but surely return fixtures against Marseille and Zurich will see an improvement. In the end of course it all boils down to money and if a new billionaire owner can be found AC Milan can start looking upwards again. Until then though scenes like last night are bound to become more common place and for one of the games great clubs that is a sad state of affairs.

After the poor 2-0 qualifier victory in Georgia (Kakha Kaladze scoring two own goals) on the 5^th of September, Italy, in spite of taking three points, seemed to have reached their creative nadir.

The summer was a tough time for the Azzurri. The Confederations Cup was a definite low for the reigning world champions and it didn’t really help that the summer debacle was followed by a 0-0 friendly against Switzerland. The Georgia match seemed to highlight what had become evident. As Andrea Pirlo, the spark of ingenuity for Italy for the last five years or so and perhaps the most important individual reason for their success in 2006, seems to be gradually draining out of his genius, there is a shortage of heirs to the midfield crown. Italy’s midfield stock is traditionally bolstering with industry, athleticism and consistency but few have the capacity to deliver the stroke of magnificence. Pirlo did it in Germany and Italy took the Cup home.

Marcello Lippi, despite denying any sort of creative crisis in the Italy camp, had a tough task in providing the answer to the midfield problem in time for the clash against Bulgaria. His answer had been sitting in the stands three days earlier. Claudio Marchisio made his second full appearance against Bulgaria and despite perhaps not orchestrating the performance by himself, the 23-year-old was heavily involved in the turnaround of outlook for Italy as they beat Bulgaria 2-0 in Turin, at Marchisio’s home stadium.

After the call-up to the opening line-up in the national side, the Juventus midfielder, who was already a regular last season, has flourished to full bloom. Marchisio scored the second of Juve’s two goals in the victory over Livorno with a perfectly placed lob after a surging run inside the box. In the next game at the Stadio Marrassi in Genoa, Marchisio put in a man of the match performance as he dominated the midfield especially in the second half. It’s no wonder Marco Tardelli, the Juventus and Italy legend and current Ireland assistant coach, drew parallels between the midfielder and himself and called the young Italian a great player. Graced with a superb over-all technique, dynamism and an impeccable eye for a pass, Marchisio embodies all the qualities of a modern midfielder.

Against Genoa, Marchisio started on the left side of the midfield pyramid, alongside the enforcers Christian Poulsen and Felipe Melo. In the defensive-minded Juve midfield line, Marchisio is the focal point in terms of their attacking build-up. He is the player Juventus look to provide the link between the defence and the playmaker Diego (replaced by Mauro Camoranesi against Genoa due to the Brazilian’s injury). Although perhaps most at home in the centre of the park, Marchisio can operate on the wing as well. This he showed in the first half as he stormed down the flank and provided the cross from which (with the help of Camoranesi’s delightful dummy) Vincenzo Iaquinta scored the opener.

As the generation of Pirlo, Totti and Alessandro Del Piero are gradually beginning to blow out the candles on their magnificent careers, they are leaving a huge creative deficit in the national team. Marchisio is top of the class among the young players who are taking over the huge responsibility of filling that void. Lippi could do a lot worse than trying to ensure this happening by giving the Juve player an extended run in the Azzurri shirt.
