Grief has been welling up lately

Neptune, god/goddess of the ocean, dissolves the barriers and defenses that block us from feeling the truth of our oneness with All That Is. Neptune is the modern ruler of Pisces the Fish, the last sign of the zodiac, which returns us to the ocean of consciousness, the Source, in order to cleanse, heal and renew.

Both Neptune and Pisces are associated with grief, which, like every emotion, serves a particular function. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, “The Lungs generate grief to dissolve attachments to people, animals, and life situations that have passed from our life. Grief that isn’t expressed and released leads to disintegration of tissues (and mind)” (Ka’imi Pilipovich).

Stepping into the ocean of grief takes courage — there can be a fear that if we really dive into it, we might drown. Traditional cultures typically provide containers for grieving through ritual space, but in Western culture, grieving is not honored as an essential process for the health of individuals and the community. In fact, pharmaceuticals are now routinely prescribed to “treat” grief, as if grieving were a disorder rather than an appropriate, necessary response to loss.

Both Neptune and Chiron in Pisces over the next several years will offer plenty of opportunities to make friends with grief. And now, with the Sun in Pisces (as of late Saturday), and approaching Tuesday’s New Moon in Pisces — conjunct both Neptune and Chiron — grief may feel particularly acute.

Pisces rules illness, which for many of us in this hyper-yang “productivity über alles” Western world is the only way we allow ourselves to have down time. When the body is out of commission and we’re “forced” to stay in bed, we actually have the time and space to get in touch with and feel our feelings. (I have a pet theory that we get colds when we need to cry.)

When we don’t allow ourselves space to feel the feelings, it’s easy to go into overwhelm and depression, when life feels like it’s all too much, which is one of the shadow expressions of Pisces. From this place of overwhelm, escaping into addiction (more shadow Pisces) can be tempting. In a very real sense, it IS all too much if we’re carrying a backlog of emotional baggage while adding more and more to the load.

In the wheel of the year, the Pisces season is the time of dissolution, when we let go of the old so that we can enter the new cycle with a clean slate. Review the past, feel the feelings that come up, and dream a new vision for the next cycle, which will begin at Spring Equinox on March 19.

Every New Moon calls us inward. The night sky is bereft of moonlight, vitality is low, and we’re in that limbo space between the end of one cycle and the beginning of the next. The Pisces New Moon, Tuesday at 2:35pm PST, especially wants us to turn down the volume on outer-world activity and mental distractions, and tune into the realm of feelings. Create a safe space for yourself to feel whatever feelings you’ve been avoiding or repressing, and trust that if you go all the way through, you will come out the other side, cleansed and renewed.

To get more specific about what this New Moon means for you, find the house that contains two degrees of Pisces. The areas of life associated with this house are where you are being invited to: dissolve old attachments; renew your spirit by connecting with something larger than the personal self or ego; practice compassionate service to relieve suffering (“serve or suffer”); surrender and go with the flow; and envision positive outcomes for the greatest good of all.

I wrote about the Pisces deluge — the line-up of five planets in the sign of the Fish — in my previous post. Now, at the New Moon, la Luna gets in on the action, heightening our ability to really FEEL these energies. The New Moon is also a power time, when we can consciously work with the cosmic forces to create a new reality.

The essence of Pisces is oneness — our inherent interconnectedness with All That Is. Uranus, the planet that rules humanity, is now at the last degree of Pisces, and the awakening of the collective consciousness is reaching a culmination point. When Uranus moves into fiery Aries on March 11th, we can expect an acceleration of revolutionary action inspired by the felt sense of oneness.

On March 9th — just after the New Moon, and just before Uranus moves into Aries — we enter the Universal Underworld of the Mayan Calendar. I highly recommend Barbara Hand Clow’s report on the New Moon (see AstroFlash!) because she weaves in this critical information. In brief, here’s her advice for this time: “You must draw your consciousness out of negativities and join the positive flow because the Universal Underworld is going to throw everything into outrageous spinning vortexes.”

The Pisces New Moon is a powerful time to set your intentions for aligning with the “positive flow,” to imagine the highest possible vision both for yourself and for all beings. The New Moon is exact at 12:46pm PST, but the New Moon power time continues throughout the day and into tomorrow.

The seeds we’re planting at the time of the Pisces New Moon are related to the ending of a cycle or chapter in our life, to unfinished business we need to take care of and loose ends we have to tie up, while envisioning the phase laying ahead and dreaming of the possibilities of “spring”. This adjustment in the cyclical unfolding of the seasons in nature and in our life is reflected in Ceres in Aquarius’ quincunx to Juno Rx in Virgo and semi-square to Jupiter in Aries, which indicates furthermore accelerated proceedings with unpredictable twists and turns that have a potentially overwhelming effect to a point where our life could become really stressful. So… we’ve got the wind at our backs, we’re holding onto our hats, here’s the week ahead…and this then is for the week beginning Sunday, February 20^th, 2011…

…and this week, we’re still carrying the energy of the intensely powerful Jupiter-Pluto square from Friday, February 25th, and now we have a mystical New Moon in Pisces, Venus gets independent as she changes signs – and juicy opportunities abound for us…and here we go!

Sunday and Monday, February 27^th and 28^th, the Moon travels through Capricorn and makes a couple ouchy aspects to Saturn and Pluto – which could dampen our moods a bit… all in all a day to side step emotional confrontations and power plays, but it does offer some good opportunities for business planning or super-rational decision making.

Then on Tuesday, March 1^st, Venus moves into freedom-loving Aquarius until March 26^th… and forms an aspect of opportunity to Aquarius’ ruler, unpredictable Uranus… We’ll be wanting to cozy up to someone who can be a friend as well as a partner…

If we’ve been feeling a little bored, this energy could really shake things up in an experimental kind of way!  Venus in Aquarius is a perfect time to try something new, unusual – and think outside the box when it comes to our love, creativity and our money!   It’s also a time when we find we want to share what we DO have to benefit the greater whole…

Our hearts and relationships can benefit from allowing our urge to do something unexpected, surprising.  And surprises could be afoot in these areas for us for the next three or four weeks as well, especially as we break free from things that bind our hearts… but throwing the baby out with the bathwater won’t be to our advantage!  We should keep our foundations strong — just breathe new life into them!

And for these couple of days, as Venus also forms that sextile aspect of opportunity to Uranus, we could receive electric flashes of intuition relating to love, creativity or money.  And if we feel an inner urge to ‘try something new’ in these areas, we should JUMP!

Then on Thursday, March 3^rd, the North Node leaves ambitious Capricorn and enters expansive Sagittarius – and its axis partner, the South Node leaves protective Cancer and enters idea-filled Gemini…

The North Node shows us the future and where we’re headed, and the South Node where we’ve been.  And in Sagittarius, the North Node is telling us to hold a vision of our higher nature, our highest selves.  And in Sagittarius, our attention could also be on foreign people, places and things for the next 19 months or so.  We’ll be encouraged to expand our worlds in some way, either by education, travel, or other exploration.  We’ll be called on to stretch now.  The last time the North Node was in Sagittarius was from August 1992 to February 1994 – so think back to that time to get a flavor of this energy shift…

And also on Thursday, March 3^rd, Mars will be giving us a potentially intense opportunity with powerful Pluto… and we can see changes that have far-reaching effects in our lives.  Passionate urges of all types will be strong now – and we can use this energy to touch or transform our true purpose.  This is a very heady day, energetically speaking…

Especially since it leads us up to the deliciously mystical New Moon in Pisces on Friday, March 4^th.
This New Moon, inspired by a conjunction to Mars and Mercury, gives her even more creative power to a new beginning… and it tells us that communication and action will be part of the process of newness.  And since we have a fullness of six planets in Pisces, we have even more opportunity for success in setting off in a brand new direction.

For those of us cut from a more prosaic cloth we can experience the  weightless and boundless movement of Pisces as an unwelcome unmooring of our well anchored life. While decidedly not a comfortable feeling for most of us the current celestial-line-up of planets suggests the cosmic theme of washing free with this New Moon strategically sandwiched between Jupiter, the archetype of expansion into the unknown, and Uranus, the archetype of emancipation through electrifying change. It seems certain that the cosmic stage has been set for us to take a quantum leap into the unknown, or at the very least to put our big toe into the oceanic  waters of the collective, and break free of self-imposed limitations.

Mercury and Uranus, one degree ahead of the New Moon, conjoined in Pisces guaranteeing an unexpected awakening of an illusive truth in life.  Mercury in Pisces is the dreamer in each of us and conjoined Uranus is saying that each of us is dreaming to the beat of a different drummer. This New Moon is not  about planting the seed of conformity, on the contrary, it appears to be awakening human diversity in spite of our Piscean distaste for difference. In the Northern Hemisphere this New Moon is the gateway to a new beginning at the Equinox and with it the opportunity for a fresh, new beginning by letting go of our old ways of perceiving reality. This coming year we can merge our individual dreams and begin to heal the rupture of humanity if we take a quantum leap in  consciousness and imagine world unity embracing human diversity.

As new possibilities beckon, we may want to take our chances, make a decision and orient us accordingly. Sit in silence, retreat from hectic and stress and listen within. Reflect, meditate, receive – allow the impressions to sink in as the Moon goes void of course at 8 pm. Let your imagination run wild so that a vision can take shape while the Piscean Moon semi-sextiles Neptune and Chiron.

Moon square Ceres at 1:04 am on Tuesday, March 16^th, could send the answers we are seeking through our dreams; especially as Mercury repeats the semi-sextile to Neptune, connecting the conscious mind with the unconscious, and once we are awakening we could feel enlightened. After the Moon’s Aries ingress at 2:31 am and trine to Mars at 3:28 am we feel moreover invigorated and full of energy. In this mood, we will let nothing stop us or stand in our way. So, we better watch out to not rush headlong in a confrontation that would only burn up our energy when the Moon opposes Saturn Rx at 5:55 am by staying on our side of the table, so to speak. Mercury’s semi-sextile to Chiron reminds us of wound spots that require sensitive handling and if we are aware of this, we should rather hold back with our opinion than impose – easier said than done when words just flow out of our mouth innocently and naively – they could be taken the wrong way though and if we aren’t careful in the choice of our words there’s the strong likelihood we could shoot ourselves in the foot. Moon square Pluto at 12:54 pm could represent a moment of inconsideration, of crossing a line and/or when we could fail to contain our anger or impatience and this could then lead to regret. So, don’t give in to these impulses. Take a deep breath and wait a moment before you respond. Her sesqui-quadrates to Pallas Rx and Vesta Rx in the evening hint at another rough stretch, where it could get tricky playing our cards without replaying an undesired scenario. Venus’ semi-sextile to Juno with the latter also semi-square Uranus indicate that we want to make progress this time and see our worthiness validated.

On Wednesday, March 17^th, perfects the Sun the conjunction to Uranus and moves into a semi-sextile with Neptune. Meanwhile, Mercury squares Ceres – both at last degree, preceding Mercury’s Aries ingress and subsequent trine to Mars, whereas Venus is met by the Moon in conjunction and then follows her suit with semi-squares to Neptune and Chiron. This is the moment of reckoning, of doing our own thing and showcasing our individuality. It’s a hymn to our sense of Self, a celebration of what we know, nurtured, longed for and aspired toward. We’ve come full circle again, completed another round of Self-renewal and Self-discovery. Thrilled by all the emotions storming over the inner landscape as we become aware of the options, the paths we can enter, we count our blessings. So, which course of action should we take next to get closer toward fulfilling our future prospects, is a question that preoccupies our mind and could become pressing when the Moon squares the nodal axis. Think about what will really help you to strengthen your own foundation and to establish yourself in a position that’s in line with your personal goals, even if it means to leave the familiar path you’ve trodden for so long. As the energy shifts on the mental level determination is ours and our will is strong; we’re eager to make decisions, to act on our thoughts, initiate conversations and contacts and to put our Self-interests first. Confidence and Self-assuredness is rising, providing us with the courage to speak boldly, to address issues directly and to react quickly. Changing our approach is critical now, though what we also have to realize is that we can’t force the issue and our progress for that matter. A bit of a struggle is usually involved; not everything will unfold according to our wishes; disappointments can happen on both sides. The more important is it to check our attitude from time to time and not to throw the towel as soon as problems emerge. Moon conjunct Eris in the evening heats up the atmosphere, letting strife arise in an instant. You don’t have to go there. It’s not worth it and will only send you to bed angrily.

Sun semi-square Juno on Thursday, March 18^th, then demands from us to persevere on our path and to keep our promises – whether this concerns finishing a project or finalizing a commitment. A void of course Arian Moon in the morning aids us in moving things forward, while Mercury’s opposition to Saturn Rx assists us in disciplining our mind to be able to deal with the issues appropriately and authoritatively, without getting frustrated or reacting in less than friendly manners. Moon semi-square Jupiter and trine Ceres stretch the imagination toward farther horizons, thereby insisting on our goodwill, until we reach up to that standard and get the job done. After her Taurus ingress the rhythm steadies, but her square to Mars prevents us from settling into a comfortable mood or becoming lazy. Aspects of adjustment from the Moon to the Mercury-Saturn opposition keep us focused on our goal and the tasks we want to accomplish, while a semi-sextile from Venus to Jupiter spurs our motivation and pushes us to succeed to the best of our abilities. At the time of the Moon’s trine to Pluto this could result in feelings of empowerment.

Very early in the morning on Friday, March 19^th, perfects the square between Vesta Rx and Pallas Rx and with it intensifies the challenge regarding the ways we go about our personal business, the fulcrum of which is where we invest our energies or which projects consume most of our energy. As always, the answer lies within and involves the complexity of our mental processes, especially the point where we tend to overly complicate things, instead of concentrating on what is truly important for us and for the realization of our soul’s purpose. Ceres’ ingress into Capricorn brings another energy shift that is supportive for foundational and structural work, in particular what our self-reliance and self-sufficiency concerns.  It fosters ambitiousness and competence. Moon semi-square Uranus later in the morning could inspire a first upgrade to routine behavior in that sense. In the afternoon, the Moon transits Juno and aspects Venus, the Sun, Jupiter and Ceres and then later in the evening Saturn Rx, which helps us to build on existing relationships and whereby it is critical not to hide our light under the bushel to ensure our growth and also to make matters concrete, now that the tension is stronger than ever to prove ourselves and our happiness seems to depend on it, a realization we could make when the Moon trines the NN later at night.

In the sign Aquarius this inaugurs activities based on intellectual stimulation, leading to big, sweeping changes. The end of one cycle sees usually some form of completion, which is repeated in Mars’ trine to Pallas in Gemini that states that an initiative and part of the mission has been fulfilled. This readies us for the next course of action; only this time we might want to try a different strategy. Though the latest tactic has apparently defied the odds and moved us ahead with our plan, it was not without great difficulty and a few setbacks. Fresh inspiration will guide our intentions along a new path. Enthusiastically, we might aim high and feel supremely confident when the Moon in Sagittarius will cast a series of sextiles to the Aquarian cluster in addition to a trine to Venus in Aries.

An opportunity for unbridled, willful self-assertion opens with the perfection of another sextile between Venus and Mars. By bestowing those energy outpourings with our individual touch and directing them along a preordained channel, we ensure that we’ll have more control in the outcome of the matter. Our latest ordeals taught us some invaluable lessons, instructing us to not leave anything to chance. Preparing us well for the task ahead allows us to better qualify for the job in addition to garner approval for our objectives, while circumventing unpleasant surprises or negative reactions from others. The Sun’s Pisces ingress heralds a phase of synthesis in the sense of tying up loose ends, purging and envisioning. It is a state of transition and fluidity, where we can get absorpted into the void, becoming ethereal ourselves, drift away and seek to escape from the material prison of the mundane world. Although we need to beware of the malleableness of our personality during that time, tuning in to the subtle undercurrents in our environment could prove to be a great asset.

Over the course of the day will the Sagittarian Moon square the Saturn-Uranus opposition and semi-square Mercury and Jupiter in Aquarius, which keeps us alerted and in enterprising spirit when the situation reaches a critical point. However, there’s also a tendency to rush things as we could get carried away in the heat of the moment.

February 19^th: Pallas in Gemini trine Jupiter in Aquarius (10+/10+), Moon ingress into Capricorn at 08:25 am EST, Mars in Aquarius square Vesta in Taurus (12+/12+)

Some form of collaboration has seemingly been achieved after a long period of going it alone and several futile attempts to weave a web of interconnections. As a silver lining is forming on the horizon now, we’re obviously steering our ship on a changed course. Decisive action could help us to turn another corner that will bring us closer to our goal. When the Moon ingresses the sign Capricorn in the morning we could feel ready to make solid plans, especially in the event of her succeeding sextile to the Sun in Pisces that permits us to reflect on the single steps, while her conjunction to Pluto keeps it profoundly realistic and simplistic.

February 20^th: Mercury in Aquarius semi-square Uranus in Pisces (06+/21+), Mars conjunct Juno in Aquarius (12+)

To make progress it will be critical to think future-oriented as well as to rely on intellectual independence in the process. Differing opinions can distract our focus and pressing questions might demand brainstorming. Interactions with others will be defined by quickwittedness and the manner in which we assert our social intelligence. A square from the Capricorn Moon to Venus in Aries in the morning, followed up by a trine to Vesta in Taurus, presents a challenge to hot-headed types in pursuit of a radical viewpoint. Being overly pushy could invoke resistance as well as repetitive debating about the same issue, whereas finding common ground could earn results.

Since we’ve applied all those efforts to strengthen our influence, we might have noticed a different trend and subsequently we seem to be able to shake the shadow or cloak of invisibility, which created a cloud around our persona. Our improved connectivity could stimulate communication and assist us to clarify a situation by addressing our concern. Later at night will the Moon ingress Aquarius and shift our mood from serious and down to earth to excited and social.  

February 22^nd: Mercury conjunct North Node in Aquarius (09+)

Considered to be “the line of destiny”, the nodal axis like a compass needle points us into the destined direction our life is supposed to follow and thus reunites soul and spirit. Mercury is the last of the faster moving planetary bodies currently transiting the sign Aquarius to make a pass over the North Node, sending information our way with the potential to inspire and to provide us with foresight. Stressful octiles cast by the Aquarius Moon to the Saturn-Uranus opposition in the morning could tickle already taut nerves with unusual thoughts, inviting us to do the unthinkable or at least something rather original. In the afternoon will the Moon form conjunctions with the North Node, Mercury and Jupiter and at night trine Pallas in Gemini, connecting all the dots for us in the most individualistic way until it’ll feel right and could confirm our presentiments.  

February 23^rd: Venus in Aries semi-sextile Vesta in Taurus (13+/13+)

Our evaluation of what has transpired could impel a courageous approach in order to perservere. The Aquarius Moon’s semi-square to Pluto in Capricorn in the morning could stim us insistent, while her conjunctions to Chiron and Neptune in the afternoon could provoke a different reaction to a wounding pattern as our sensibilities could change.

February 24^th: Mercury conjunct Jupiter in Aquarius (11+), Sun in Pisces semi-square Eris in Aries (05+/20+), Moon ingress into Pisces at 07:59 am EST, Mercury in Aquarius trine Pallas in Gemini (12+/12+), New Moon at 06:35 Pisces at 08:35 pm EST

Mercury and Jupiter meet in Aquarius a second time since the beginning of this year to usher in the Pisces New Moon with an electric current that can leave our heads spinning regarding the impulse sounding forth. A trine from Mercury to Pallas could indicate an adequate alteration in our attitude that is conducive for the conveying of the message, which could be driven by an identity crisis due to Eris’ tense involvement with the lunation. The Moon’s Pisces ingress evokes heightened awareness, while her communion with the Sun for the New Moon in this highly sensitive sign could result in enlightenment.

January 18^th saw the first Mercury-Jupiter conjunction, but with Mercury in retrograde motion. Introspection might have been at a peak than with the focus on rectifying and compensating for previous choices. Now, we may have gained a better understanding of the concept of process, which includes that individuals operate at different mental levels, speeds and modes of perception. In the grand design of the whole, we all have our justified place and function, even though we mostly cannot wrap our minds around an impartial, holistic paradigm. But we humans partake in this multi-dimensional and pluralistic creation and every individual in its own idiosyncratic way. This can lead to competition and discord, whereby our notion of right and wrong is only relative to our cognition and conceptualization and can therefore trap us in certain beliefs, where we’re held hostage by our personal truth. Yet, in moments of awareness the light shines in from a new angle, removing the veil from things previously hidden. However, our mind can play tricks with us, letting us use our imagination as a double-egded sword that can either blind us with ignorance and denial or cut through illusions and phantasmata. Thus, the mental picture we want to see is moulded by our intentions, which in turn are informed by our desires.  Depending on the state of our ego, our motivations can range from selfishness to selflessness. If we’re too self-centered we worship the ego, separate the Self from the rest of the world, lack morality and concern for others. Consequently, our self-interests will take priority over everything else and come at the expense of others.  Altruism is the opposite of egocentrism. It is conditioned by interconnectivity and based on inclusiveness, mindfulness and empathy.

To be an individual in our own right is the promise of incarnation as well as our individual choice once we’re capable of making conscious decisions and understand the consequences of our actions. In due time and after a process of character-forming by various influences we assume a definitive shape in order to become the person we need to be. Yet, it is still up to each of us which meaning we’re giving to our lives.
