Fun fact: I used to have trouble with nose bleeds when I was young and have a fear of them breaking out at the worst possible occasions, such as when shooting free throws in a basketball game. Unfortunately, Charlie Villanueva suffered that fate yesterday. Actually, the hairless wonder suffered a broken nose in Detroit’s 94-88 win over the Hawks yesterday, meaning he’ll be fitted with one of these bad boys for a couple weeks. Oh well, at least he’s got Rip Hamilton in his corner to show him how to wear it to perfection.

12 games tonight – if you don’t have the league pass your options are limited to a few games, but if you are lucky enough to call the league pass your own, you have to choose which games to watch (tough situation, isn’t it? Nearly as tough as ‘Sophie’s Choice’…but not quiet there yet). We’ll try to help you a bit with that.

Southeast Showdown

Washington Wizards @ Miami Heat

The Wizards aren’t as good as people thought they would be before the season. Their chemistry on the court and in the locker room isn’t quiet what it used to be a few years ago when they made their little run in the playoffs (LeBron put a quick end to that). With the return of Antawn Jamison, still one of the most underrated players in the game, you have to watch out for them.

Miami on the other hand is the exact opposite. Nobody believed in them, they started the season on a pretty nice winning streak, but now they are falling apart midway through. They still won 6 of their last 10, so don’t let the hype get to you.

Going against a division rival usually results in a way more intense game, so keep an eye on this one (it’s on ESPN – shouldn’t be too hard). Not the best game tonight, but it has a lot of what we like to call ‘buzzerbeater-potential’.

Atlantic Showdown

Toronto Raptors @ Boston Celtics

#1 and #2 from the Atlantic divison will meet tonight at 07:30 pm. How awesome is this game going to be? Playing a division rival and both teams feel to need to prove themselves to the audience…

Toronto isn’t looking as good as you would expect by taking a look at their roster. Chris Bosh is playing out of his mind, but his supporting cast isn’t quiet there yet. Turkoglu (pretty overrated in my humble opinion, but a good player nonetheless) needs to step his game up and I’m pretty sure he wants to repeat his awesome performance from the last playoffs. Do you think the Celtics still remember this one?

I’m sure they do. A little extra motivation can’t hurt. The Celtics, who won 11 games so far by the way, are getting it from the media lately – Sheed can’t shoot, the don’t defend like they used to, Garnett isn’t as good as he was before his injury…bla bla bla…this guys will go for the kill tonight, no taking prisoners approach.

If you can only watch one game tonight and you aren’t a fan of a particular team, I’d go with this one.

Honorable mentions

San Antonio Spurs @ Houston Rockets

Okay, yeah, putting a game like this in as a honorable mention is a shame, I know. This is one of the better match-ups tonight, but not as good as watching KG go against Bosh. It is better as Miami vs. Wizards, tho. I’m too lazy to edit it…anyway, watch this game if you are into team basketball and want to know how the game is supposed to be played instead of how most teams play it. The Rockets are always a joy to watch and the Spurs…well, if it wasn’t for injuries, they would have a better record, but they will come through when it matters – like every year.

Atlanta Hawks @ Philly 76ers

The team that is and the team that could be – for me, they were pretty much the same team for a long time: athletic, got a decent go-to guy, lacked a few shooters to put them over the top…one team got Bibby, Crawford and improved a lot while the other…well, still has Andre Igoudala and Williams was coming into his own before he got injured for the next 8 weeks.

Expect a fast, fun-to-watch game, but it won’t be close, I guess.

Los Angeles Clippers @ Detroit Pistons

Yeah, I know, nobody but a fan would watch this game, but well…this is a Pistons blog and I’ll take this game over all the other games any day. Crazy, I know, but I guess I’ll have to live with it.

By Roman Wolfe

NBA star/rapper Allen Iverson has announced his retirement from the NBA in a statement released on commentator Stephen A. Smith’s website yesterday (November 25th).

Iverson, who played in the NBA for 13 years, was a 10 time All-Star, who played with the 76ers from 1996 until 2006.

From 2006 until 2008 Iverson played with the Denver Nuggets. In 2009, the Nuggets traded Iverson to the Detroit Pistons, where he sat out the majority of the season.

A back injury was officially sited as the reason for his deactivation.

Iverson signed a one-year contract with the Memphis Grizzlies in September, but left the team earlier this month for personal reasons.

Last week the Grizzlies terminated Iverson’s contract, after the former star player played in only three games.

In a statement on Smith’s website, Iverson stated that he was stepping away from the game to spend quality time with his wife and children.

“I would like to announce my plans from the National Basketball Association,” Iverson said in a statement. “I always thought that when I left the game, it would be because I couldn’t help my team the way that I was accustomed to. However, that is not the case. I still have tremendous love for the game, the desire to play and a whole lot left in my tank. I feel strongly that I can still compete at the highest level.”

Iverson thanked a number of influential people in his statement, including Magic Johnson, Isaiah Thomas, Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, his mother, John Thompson and Philadelphia 76ers former head coach Larry Brown, with whom Iverson had a tumultuous relationship.

Under his rap name Juelz, Iverson has recorded with a variety of rappers including Mase, Mysonne and Harlem World.

In 2000 his track “40 Bars” leaked. The track contained numerous explicative lyrics as well as derogatory remarks against homosexuals.

The track was never released nor was the album.

“To the city of Philadelphia I have wonderful memories of my day in a Sixers uniform,” Iverson stated. “To Philly fans, thank you. Your voice will always be music to my ears.”

A bit late on this one, but I guess you’ll appreciate it anyway if you missed the game. Clevel

A bit late on this one, but I guess you’ll appreciate it anyway if you missed the game. Cleveland won 98 – 88 as you probably already know, but here is what you maybe missed:

Rodney Stuckey was the only Pistons nearly playing 40 minutes – one part because Ben Gordon went down in the 2nd quarter and one part because Stuck was the only guy able to make baskets late in the 4th

Will Bynum had his worst night this season so far – 1/13 shooting (= 7% FG%), 3 turnovers and he got stuffed at the rim twice – on the bright side: he dished out a team-high 5 assists

The Cavaliers actually killed us with their three point shooting: 9/17 is quiet awesome, better than 50% from behind the arc

Detroit out-rebounded Cleveland and had less turnovers, but when you don’t hit as many open jumpshots, you are in for a loooooooong night

Charlie Villanueva fumbled some balls late in the game which always took our momentum – sometimes a sloppy play can kill everything you worked for the last couple of plays

Jason Maxiell had his best game so far – I still don’t like the idea of him taking so many jumpshots, but when he is hitting them, I’m keeping my mouth shut. 10 points and 4 offensive boards plus some major hustle plays to keep plays alive – way to go!

Austin Daye was the most pleasent surprise in this game. The kid made things happen: 9 points, 3 boards and a block. He looked really comfortable out there for the first time this season.

Austin Daye

————————

Cleveland MVP

Surprise, surprise…LeBron James, of course. 34 points, 8 boards, 7 assists – is there more you need to know? This guy made things happen and he did it in style. YouTube Proof.

He wasn’t alone, tho, it was a team effort. 5 Cleveland players scored in double digits.

Detroit MVP

Not really a close one, Rodney Stuckey carried us through major parts of our runs to keep the game close. A team-high 25 points on 50% shooting from the field and a perfect 8/8 from the free throw line. Add 6 boards and 2 steals to it and you got yourself a pretty decent statline. Some more assists would have been nice, but who should he have passed the ball to? Bynum who was 1/13? Ben Wallace? Jerebko? You get my point, I guess.

There’s a reason people have dubbed the Cavs the “Cleveland LeBrons.” If you don’t see why, tonight’s game provided 34 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists worth of evidence as to why this guy turns a non-playoff team into a Finals contender every year. As much as I complain about any star treatment by NBA officials, this guy is one of the best basketball players on the planet. He’s the reason why the Cavs were running away with this game in the second and third quarters. Once again, the Pistons put up a good fight late in the game, but the Shaq-less Cavs (and mostly LeBron) were too strong in the end.

The Cavs started off hot, and as I noted on Twitter, were shooting 67% for the game at one point in the 2nd quarter. Just as I pleaded, the Pistons tightened up their defense. Cleveland put up 60 points in the first half but were held to 38 in the second half. The heightened defensive intensity helped the Pistons get back into the game in the 4th quarter.

However, the Pistons were unable to hit shots (39% shooting on the night) and weren’t able to come all the way back to beat the Cavs. Outside of Rodney Stuckey (25 points on 16 shots) and Charlie Villanueva (19 on 15 shots, 8 rebounds), the Pistons didn’t have a consistent offensive threat on the floor. Jason Maxiell (10 points on 3-5 shooting) was the only other Piston in double figures.

Random notes:

Will Bynum had a night to forget (4 points on 1-13 shooting). His 5:3 assist to turnover ratio wasn’t awful, but also not what we’ve come to expect from MFWB.

Jonas Jerebko was maddening, yet effective. He had a Ben Wallace-esque line of 4 points, 6 rebounds (5 on the offensive end), 1 assist and 1 steal.

Speaking of Big Ben, he had 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks. He also hit 4 of 6 free throws, though he should have shot at least double that many.

Daniel Gibson had yet another good night against the Pistons. He had 13 points on 7 shots, including three 3-pointers. Hasn’t Mike Brown realized that he always tears it up against the Pistons? If I were their coach, I’d start him against Detroit.

Shaq didn’t play tonight, but history says he may not have been a big factor. The Pistons (and especially Big Ben) have defended him well in the past.

LeBron James was the only Cavalier to score more than 14 points. He also led them in assists and rebounds. He definitely looked like the reigning MVP tonight.

The Cavs only used 8 players tonight, while the Pistons used 10. Still, Stuckey led all players with 40 minutes. He needed to tonight though. Great game from #3.

Overall, this loss was disappointing, but without Ben Gordon, the Pistons are missing their three best players. Unlike the other injury-depleted professional team in Detroit, the Pistons aren’t deep enough to compete with the top teams in the NBA without Gordon, Rip Hamilton, and Tayshaun Prince.

The Pistons are back in action on Friday night against the Los Angeles Clippers. Hopefully they’ll be able to end their slide at 6 games and get back on track.

According to espn.com Shaquille O’Neal will miss his 6th straight game tonight. I don’t know if you can call this catching a break, because the Pistons will be in for a tough game with Shaq on the court or with Shaq off the court.

The Cavaliers aren’t playing their best basketball right now, but they are still in the top 3 in the East and with LeBron on your team there hardly ever is something like a bad night. Let’s hope that the Pistons can take care of business at home. This is exactly the opponent you need to beat to prove that you can still cause some trouble in your Conference.

Internet…huh…beautiful thing…everybody can make themselves heard/read – so w

Internet…huh…beautiful thing…everybody can make themselves heard/read – so when somebody writes a certain player is underrated and should start on a certain team it spreads like wildfire. People don’t even check if it’s true. It is way easier to just copy what sounds good and don’t put time into researching the facts.

So, lately everybody and their mommas is trying to tell you that Will Bynum should start over Rodney Stuckey for the Detroit Pistons. Sure, looking at some of the stats it seems to be a neat idea:

Bynum’s true shooting percentage is at .588 this season (.132 better than Stuckey who is averaging a career low .456 TS% so far)

Bynum’s effective field goal percentage is at .518 (Stuckey is at .391 eFG%)

Will’s Player Efficiency Rating is at 20.0 which is pretty awesome (Rodney is at 13.8 – the league average is 15.0 in case you aren’t familiar with this stat)

Bynum is scoring more around the rim while Stuckey is taking jumpers on 71% of his attempts – Bynum is scoring a higher % on both by the way

Will Bynum #12

So, Bynum is a more efficent scorer – how about passing?

Will ‘The Thrill’ is dishing out the assist on 27.1% of the made shots of his teammates when he is on the floor (Rodney is at 19%)

Bynum’s passing rating is at 8.9 while Stuckey is at 6.4

Hmmm…team offense & team defense?

Bynum’s offensive rating is at 113 (ORtg = points produced/scored on 100 possessions ) – Stuckey’s is at 97

Bynum’s offensive rating is at 108 (ORtg = points produced/scored on 100 possessions ) – Stuckey’s is at 107 – no big difference

Well, those stats suggest that Bynum would help the Pistons win more games than Stuckey. Are there other stats? Of course they are. Let’s see what Rodney has going for himself stats-wise:

The Pistons got outscored by 33 points while Bynum was on the floor while only getting outscored by 8 while Stuckey was on the floor (this season so far) – both are usually playing at the end of the game, but you should consider that Rodney is starting the game and playing against tougher competition in the opening quarter than Bynum

Bynum is finishing games with a +/- rating at an average of -4.8, Stuckey is averaging a -0.7

Only 15% of Bynum’s shots are assisted while Stuckey is getting assisted on 32% of his made field goals – read on if you want to know why this is important

Stuckey is the better ballhandler (he has more turnovers and bad passes, but considering the minutes played he is a bit better than Bynum)

Rodney Stuckey #3

Is there something to consider when looking at these stats?

Stuckey is playing pretty many minutes out of position. People tend to forget that a lot. Could it be that his stats aren’t as good, because he is spending a good amount of time at shooting guard and/or small forward? Would the numbers be different if Stuckey would play PG all the time instead of switching it up and playing out of position? Without a doubt.

Here are Stuckey’s stats at the different positions:

Point Guard: Net Points of the team +16

Shooting Guard: Net Points of the team -36

Small Forward: Net Points of the team +9

So, if we woant to find out who should start at point guard we should compare the stats they get when they play that position, right? Player 48-Minute Production by Position:

eFG% (Effective Field Goal Percentage): Bynum .518 – Stuckey .538

FTA (Free Throw Attempts): Bynum 7.7 – Stuckey 15.0

Assists (don’t forget: by 48 minutes): Bynum 7.0 – Stuckey 10.0

Points: Bynum 24.9 – Stuckey 34.9

PER*: Bynum 21.8 – Stuckey 42.0

Looks a bit different, right? What about the defense? Opponent Counterpart 48-Minute Production:

PER*-”allowed”: Bynum 16.2 – Stuckey 7.6

Points-allowed: Bynum 19.0 – Stuckey 13.3

What I’m trying to show you is that stats can be deceiving. Making this choice is not as easy as “who has better stats”, it is more about what kind of team are we trying to be, what are our long-term goals and what way do we play our best? Stuckey is starting at point guard and Bynum is pretty much taking over the point guard position in the 2nd half. Why?

Because Stuckey is pretty good at point guard, but we need him playing some shooting guard and small forward as well right now. Could Bynum guard shooting guards? No way. If they are both hot, can we afford to put Ben Gordon on the bench? No. We try to do what works best and it really doesn’t matter at all who starts the game at point guard, because our most productive line-up (as a team, not for every individual on the court) is this one so far:

Bynum – Gordon – Stuckey – Villanueva – Wallace -> Top Five Men Floor-Units Win% = 77%

Would Stuckey put up better individual numbers if he was playing point guard? Probably, but it wouldn’t be the best for the team. When Prince and Rip are back it will get even more complicated. What if our best line-up is Stuckey – Gordon – Hamilton – Prince – Villanueva? Well, then Bynum will have to sit and watch. What if Bynum is better suited to get the job done with those guys on the floor? Well, Stuckey is going to sit and watch.

The few things you should remember from this post are:

Stuckey is playing out of position for long stretches of the game

Stats are deceiving and don’t measure everything happening on the floor

Bynum is more effective comparing the stats without paying attention to the position played

Stuckey is more effective comparing the stats they accumulate while playing point guard

We are trying to build a contender here and most of our players are doing whatever helps the team the most - no big egos

To sum it all up: Looking at the position-based stats, Stuckey is a better point guard, but we need him to play out of position for long stretches of most games. His stats change accordingly. Bynum is a great point guard and a very efficient scorer. There is no point in arguing one way or another, because with the return of Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince the whole dynamic of the team will change anyway. In my opinion, Stuckey should keep starting the games, because it is giving the team more options to run the offense and it opens up more options on defense too (Stuckey can guard big guards and some small forwards). Bynum is the perfect energizer of the bench and when both Stuckey and Bynum are on the court, Bynum is usually playing point guard. I wouldn’t change that, but what do I know…

Free Pick for Friday November 27th

Alabama @ Auburn

Auburn enters this game with revenge after getting blanked last year. Alabama is going to the SEC Championship game against Florida so this game is a warm up. The Tigers have covered seven of 11 against Alabama and the home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five showdowns. The Crimson Tide dropped nine of 13 ATS when giving up more than 11 points on the highway. Auburn will not win but they will keep it close.

Free Pick for Saturday November 28th

Arkansas @ LSU

The loss for LSU was a tough one that will linger over to this week. Arkansas has pulled off the upset against LSU the last two seasons. The Razorbacks are 11-6 as road dogs and the visitor is 6-3 in the past nine meetings. The Tigers are 2-14 as SEC home favorites and they have floundered in 27 of 34 ATS at Baton Rouge in November. Arkansas knows hwo to beat LSU and will do it again.

Free Pick For Sunday November 29th

Indianapolis @ Houston
Houston will be playing on a short week and they have to get Chris Brown in the right mindset for this game. Houston has cashed eight straight as home dogs and won six of those eight SU, the only two losses at the hands of the Colts by a total of four points. The Colts have struggled within the division, dropping 14 of 21 ATS, while the Texans are 6-2 at Reliant Stadium versus AFC-South citizens. Indianapolis has won six of seven at Houston, but failed in five of seven ATS. Houston finally gets the win against the Colts.

Apologies for another light week here at the GHHT, but busy weeks come with the territory when at Th

Apologies for another light week here at the GHHT, but busy weeks come with the territory when at The U. Since my last recap, the Pistons beat the Washington Wizards, but lost their next 5 games. Despite some recurring themes throughout those losses, I’ll go with a game-by-game approach.

Pistons: 106 Wizards: 103 – I wasn’t able to watch this game, but the box score shows a lot of the things we Pistons fans expected coming into this season. The guards and Charlie Villanueva carried the scoring load: CV31, Will Bynum, Ben Gordon, and Rodney Stuckey combined to score 91 of the Pistons’ 106 points. Detroit out-rebounded the Wizards 44-43, but that feat comes with an asterisk as Antawn Jamison did not play for Washington due to a shoulder injury. The big story of the game was the Wizards’ inability to score late in the 4th quarter. Washington went the final 5:03 without a field goal (until Gilbert Arenas hit a meaningless 3-pointer with 3 seconds left), and only scored 5 points in that time.

Mavericks: 95 Pistons: 90 – I think this game would have gone the other way for the Pistons if they hadn’t been on the second leg of a back-to-back. They looked tired at points during the game and it didn’t help that Ben Gordon made only 1 of 16 shots. Dirk Nowitzki maintained his MVP-like play in the early season with 25 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. I was very impressed with Dallas rookie Rodrigue Beaubois. The Frenchman scored 14 points (on a perfect 6-6) in 19 minutes. Despite Gordon’s poor shooting night, I support John Kuester’s decision to give Gordon the ball in the closing seconds when a 3-pointer would have tied the game. Ball Don’t Lie’s Kelly Dwyer chimed in on this decision during his daily recap of NBA action.

So do you go to Ben Gordon, with the game on the line?

Of course you do. Hell yes, you do.

Why?

Because Gordon, and I’m paraphrasing here, is “a career 41.5 three-point shooter.”

And after Sunday’s outburst? He’s a 41.4 percent three-point shooter.

As always, great stuff from KD. Many Pistons’ fans wanted to see the ball in Will Bynum’s hands at the end of the game. I disagree. Bynum isn’t a great 3-point shooter, and you can’t trust the NBA officials to call a foul (or the Mavericks to foul in that situation) when the game is on the line. Unfortunately, Gordon missed and the Pistons took the loss. He’ll make up for it at some point this season.

Lakers: 106 Pistons: 93 – Don’t kid yourself: this was a beat-down. The Pistons’ bench was able to make things respectable towards the end of the game, but the Lakers were able to slack off when leading 88-63 after the first 3 quarters. Los Angeles dominated on the glass (44-32) and shot 47.2% on the night, even after shooting 33% in the 4th quarter. Kobe Bryant scored a seemingly-effortless 40 points. Poor Jonas Jerebko was charged with guarding the Black Mamba and looked like a rookie should in the process. Poor nights from Charlie Villanueva (2 points) and Rodney Stuckey (-30!) were a big part of the Pistons’ downfall. Still, it’s nice to see the team come back late in the game and not let the Lakers get too comfortable (Kobe was brought back into the game when the Pistons got to within 10 points).

Trail Blazers: 87 Pistons: 81 – The Pistons trailed for the majority of this game, but were consistently making small runs to get close and nearly take the lead. Unfortunately, the Blazers had an answer for every run the Pistons made. It seemed as if Brandon Roy would come up with a huge basket when the Pistons got too close. I was shocked when I saw he only scored 20 points; I thought he had at least 30. Charlie Villanueva bounced back from his poor outing against the Lakers with a 20 point effort. It would be nice to see him end up with more than 3 rebounds, but Ben Wallace grabbing 12 rebounds and a slow pace kept the amount of chances to a minimum. Surprisingly, the Pistons out-rebounded the Blazers 39-36. Portland killed the Pistons with their offensive efficiency, racking up 25 assists on 33 made field goals.

Jazz: 100 Pistons: 97 (OT) – I had a hard time paying attention to this one. Most of it had to do with the technical problems Fox Sports was having with their broadcast (especially the lack of the score on screen during the first half). Regardless, this loss was disappointing. The Pistons had a golden chance to win at Utah for the first time since John Stockton retired and came up empty. Packey summed up the night nicely at Motown String Music:

Even though it was an entertaining game, that doesn’t mean it was aesthetically pleasing. The Pistons turned the ball over 17 times and allowed Utah to get to the charity stripe 44 times, of which they made 33, serving as the difference maker in this one. Detroit made 21 of their 25 attempts.

Suns: 117 Pistons: 91 – The Pistons fell behind early in the 2nd quarter, trailing by 16 (58-42) at halftime and stretched their lead to 20+ in the 3rd quarter. The Suns were able to run on the Pistons at will, both after made baskets and defensive rebounds. Steve Nash continued to play at the ridiculous level we’ve seen from him this year (even by his standards) with 20 points and 9 assists. Amare Stoudemire received a technical foul early in the 3rd quarter and, like Rasheed Wallace in his early Piston days, took his game to another level. Stoudemire finished with 21 points and 5 rebounds. The Pistons, like most teams do at the end of a road trip, looked like they just wanted to get on the plane and go home.

To their defense, the Pistons have played 6 games in the last 9 days. Only one of those games was at the Palace, and it was on the second half of a back-to-back. The Pistons actually played three sets of back-to-back games in this 6-game stretch. Essentially, this was a 6-game road trip for the Pistons. Unfortunately, they were only able to come away with 1 win. The five losses came against teams with a combined 46-20 record (currently), and even that mark is held back by Utah’s 7-6 start. They took care of business against the (currently) 3-9 Wizards. The reality of the situation is that there aren’t many teams in the NBA that would come away from a stretch like this with a .500 record (3-3). There are definitely areas the Pistons need to improve (defense, general focus, Rodney Stuckey’s shooting), but don’t think that these losses are because the Pistons are a bad team. They just went up against some of the best teams in the NBA in a short stretch and weren’t able to come away with wins.

The Pistons are back in action on Wednesday against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cleveland has been red-hot as of late, but hopefully the Pistons can come away with a November win against the Cavs for the second year in a row. The silver lining? The Clippers come to town on Friday.

#1 – Atlanta Hawks The best team of the NBA so far. Josh Smith has been superb in the first 14 games

#1 – Atlanta Hawks

The best team of the NBA so far. Josh Smith has been superb in the first 14 games. He has been the horse they have been riding. The Hawks had a weird loss to the Hornets Friday but that’s Ok on the road and on a second of back-to-backs.

#2 – Cleveland Cavaliers

Without Shaq, the team plays better. He just doesn’t fit there and with him out for a while now, they were able to give minutes to JJ Hickson who could be the solution for their problems, certainly not offensively but maybe defensively.

#3 – Phoenix Suns

The Suns remain red hot. 2nd best record of the league so far, even with the loss to the Hornets on Thursday which shouldn’t be a shock because every time that the Suns are dominated on the boards, they lose, and it’s a lock just like that.

#4 – Los Angeles Lakers

Gasol is back and that means the Lakers should make their push to the league’s best record now. With the Spanish Center there, they are just so tough to beat, they are big and physical.

#5 – Orlando Magic

With Rashard Lewis back, they become a matchup nightmare again. The win against the Celtics highlighted that. Vince Carter is coming alive, against Boston he scored 26, turned the ball over a lot but took the game over in the end and that what you expect from your superstar and the reason why Orlando traded for him.

#6 – Denver Nuggets

Carmelo Anthony has been terrific so far and put himself in the MVP race however they are still not on the same level as last season. Their defense has been OK but when Billups doesn’t play well, all of a sudden nobody else but Carmelo produces.

#7 – Dallas Mavericks

Nowitzki has been carrying them because the bunch of injuries already started, Marion and Howard haven’t played together for a decent amount of time, and it’s not close to end.

#8 – Boston Celtics

On back-to-backs they look old. The loss against the Magic can be faced as a problem but when healthy, they are still the best team in the NBA. The question is: for how long will they remain healthy?

#9 – Milwaukee Bucks

The Jenningsmania is all over the NBA, even in this Power Rankings.

#10 – Portland Trail Blazers

Travis Outlaw is out with the same injury that held Webster for the entire season last year and that’s a hit on their second unit. The 3 men backcourt has survived so far but maybe is time to trade Miller.

#11 – Miami Heat

As Wade goes, they go which means that so far, they are a playoff team.

#12 – Houston Rockets

Even I’m convinced that this team needs somebody who can create his own shots on clutch moments. That guy is neither Ariza nor Brooks. Hopefully McGrady won’t screw the good vibe around the team.

#13 – Oklahoma City Thunder

When those four guys score, they are tough to hold. Lately even when they lose, they are on the game until the end. As the season progresses, they progress and the Western Conference should watch out.

#14 – Utah Jazz

With Williams back and Boozer stepping up, the Jazz won all three games this week including one against the Spurs which was their first in San Antonio in 20 games.

#15 – Toronto Raptors

They won 42% of their games. With all the money spent in this team and with playoff expectations around them, they have to perform better.

#16 – San Antonio Spurs

Ginobili and Parker out this week, injuries caught with them like expected. They always start slow, so no worry there.

#17 – Chicago Bulls

Derrick Rose has struggled a lot and that’s a real problem. This is a team that has a lot of variations and formations but it’s only 8 deep.

#18 – Indiana Pacers

They are who we thought they were: a .500 team.

#19 – Detroit Pistons

With Hamilton and Prince out, they have been able to hang in there but the problems are the same, lack of size inside and no rebounders, and when they face decent competition, that’s a problem.

#20 – Sacramento Kings

They are 5-7. Can you believe that?! The Kings won 41.7% of their games and that’s crazy. Tyreke Evans and Omir Caspi have been big so far.

#21 – Los Angeles Clippers

Yes, they have been a disappointment but when Gordon and Griffin return, they should be better. The push to the playoffs is yet to come but Kaman has played the best basketball of his career and Baron Davis is finally finding himself on that offense. Their second unit is amazing.

#22 – New Orleans Hornets

Without Chris Paul and with the new coach, they played well this week. Rookies getting more playing time and when Stojakovic shows up to play, they are not that bad. It’s tough to see them over .500 though.

#23 – Philadelphia 76ers

They are the ones to open a playoff spot on the East. They face problems on offense and defense. With Brand there, they haven’t been as committed to Iguodala on offense which they should if they want to save the season.

#24 – Golden State Warriors

Jackson is gone and the Warriors got cap relief instead. They’ll play shorthanded for the rest of the season but Don Nelson likes it this way. Nelson who, by the way, is 23 wins away from his record which means he’s 23 wins away from retirement what could mean that next season, maybe the Warriors will be OK.

#25 – Charlotte Bobcats

Probably the dumbest team in the NBA. The franchise is for sale but yet they took on Jackson’s awful contract in a move that won’t make them better than those teams they are fighting.

#26 – Memphis Grizzlies

Iverson is now gone for good. It’s time for them to translate talent into wins.

#27 – Washington Wizards

They have been the most disappointing team so far.

#28 – New York Knicks

Apparently they refused going after Allen Iverson, which would at least entertain us, because of Eddie Curry and Toney Douglas. I have no words for that.

#29 – Minnesota Timberwolves

They miss Kevin Love but as expected they would be bad anyway.

#30 – New Jersey Nets

They have been banged up but nothing justifies that awful start. Douglas Roberts is back, so is Harris, which means the offense should be better but the 0-17 start looks real.

Most folks have heard about the Pontiac Silverdome selling for pennies on the dollar. That’s apparently an overstatement, as the stadium actually sold forcloser to one penny on the dollar.

Built in 1975, the Silverdome has been home to the Detroit Lions and the Detroit Pistons over time. It costs the city of Pontiac $1.5 million to maintain. This month the City of Pontiac, Michigan accepted a bid of $583,000 in its auction of the stadium. A family-owned real estate company based in Toronto is the winning bidder (though the deal has not closed yet) and ultimately plans to refurbish the stadium and use it for men’s and women’s Major League Soccer (that’s a discussion for espn).

This property, with an overall building size somewhere around 462,000 square feet was built for $55.7 million or roughly $120 per square foot. It was auctioned off 34 years later for $1.20 per square foot, or one-one hundredth of its original value. It is still considered a “win” since the cost to maintain the property is no longer on the City’s dime, so to speak.

If it is a big game like Ohio St vs Michigan or Oregon Vs Arizona I have you covered.

If the game is a low key game without all the fanfare but you want information and a winning pick I can do that too! Not everyone will cover SMU and Marsahall but if you want the pick and the game written up and the stats and the trends to go along with it, I will cover all of them.

Here is an example of one of the free picks for tomorrow.

Free College Football Sports Betting Pick for Saturday November 20th

TCU Vs Wyoming

TCU showed the world last week that they deserve the top ranking they have. They jumped to #4 in the country and with that came an inflated line. TCU has struggled a bit on the road in November (4-9-1 ATS). Wyoming is 13-5 ATS off a SU win and 5-1 ATS at home with revenge off a straight up and ATS win. Letdown is a real possibility with this inflated line.

Five years ago today, on November 19, 2004, an altercation occured in a game between the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers that has gone down in NBA history simply as the “The Malice at the Palace”.

Fighting began on the court and then extended into the stands after a plastic cup with soda was thrown at then-Pacer player Ron Artest. Chaos ensued and the brawl led to nine players being suspended without pay for a total of 146 games, costing them $10 million in lost salaries. Five players were also charged with assault & eventually sentenced to a year on probation and community service. Five fans were also legally charged, and John Green, the man who threw the cup at Artest, received a lifetime ban from attending Pistons games.

The 2-9 Knicks are probably the most boring team in the NBA, but that could change as the Knicks are expected to offer a contract to free agent and 10 time all-star Allen Iverson later today. Since leaving Philadelphia Iverson hasn’t won a playoff series and has basically been a distraction both on and off the court, with the best examples coming recently in his short stints with the Pistons and Grizzlies. Allen Iverson is currently 6th all-time in terms of points per game average and could bring great interest and excitement back to the city of New York, even for just the rest of this year as Knicks fans wait for 2010.

The Cowboys have cashed 11 of 14 as favorites and at a 14-5-1 clip at home versus conference competition. They are also 10-5-2 ATS in their last 17 finales at Pickens Stadium. The Buffaloes are 4-13 as dogs with revenge. This game is a blowout and Oklahoma ST cruises and wins by 30 points!

These are very quick picks but I only picked them because I was confident in them, otherwise I’d leave them blank. Enjoy.

CHA V PHI; PHI -3, o-182

What the 76ers lack in defense, they gain in FG%, at least against the Bobcats (46% versus 40%). I still have some hope for the 76ers. This game should help put them back on the right track.

NY V IND; IND – 6.5, u-214

Indiana Pacers continue their streak at home against a struggling Knicks team.

OKC V ORL; OKC +12, o-189.5

Oklahoma City knows how to beat the Magic. They’ve done it before. Only this time, the Magic will be prepared (or at least should be). Orlando wins but not without a fight from the Thunder.

CLE V WAS; WAS +4, o-196.5

I normally don’t look at historical data but this is a different case. The Cavs have lost 19 of 23 road games against Washington since ‘96, including 9 loses in 11 games since drafting LeBron, and none in the past 2 years (0-4). On top of that, Cleveland is missing three of their best players (Shaq, Moon, and Varajeo) and Arenas is back for the Wizards.

MIA V ATL; ATL- 7.5, o-192.5

This normally could be a good game but the Hawks are hot and the Heat is not. Miami is struggling to find a rhythm and if they couldn’t find it at home against the Thunder, they won’t find it in Atlanta against the Hawks.

HOU V MIN; HOU -6; o-200

Houston had the victory in their game against the Suns well within reach but let it slip away. They’ll be looking for revenge against a struggling Timberwolves team as they put the hurt on them early just as they tried with the Suns. Only Minnesota isn’t a good enough team to come back.

TOR V UTH; TOR +8.5, o-215

The Raptors are a good team but they’ve unfortunately been playing some very good teams lately. Utah also has potential and looked good against the 76ers and the Cavs but they’ve also had some close calls that shouldn’t have been so close and lost games they should’ve won. Utah has the advantage here of more rest but Toronto should be able to hang in there. Put this one at the bottom of your list though as the jury is not yet unanimous.

DET V POR; DET+ 11, o-178

Remember what I said in my last post? Detroit can play against a good team if that team doesn’t have a Kobe. Replace Kobe’s 40 points from their last game with even just 30 points and you have Detroit losing by 3. Portland has a Roy, but he’s still no Kobe. Detroit will lose by 6-8.

GS V BOS, GS +16.5, o-209.5

Warrior defense will be no match for the unstoppable Celtics scorers, but they are a good enough shooting team to not lose by 16.

NJ V MIL, MIL -10, o-187.5

New Jersey streak continues.

LAC V MEM, LAC +5.5, u-199

Clippers win.

SA V DAL; DAL -1.5, o-196.5

Dallas is hot and is seeking revenge from their most recent loss to San Antonio.

Phil Jackson said it best. “We played 2 good quarters.” When the Lakers play 2 good quarters they are almost always going to win. A good quarter for the Lakers is so dominant and overwhelming that most teams won’t be able to recover, even when the Lakers play 2 terrible quarters like the 1st and 4th last night.

Watching the first quarter was like watching St. Peters vs. Monmouth (final score 58 – 34). Both teams were brutal, the Lakers were just more brutal. The Lakers could not hit a shot, even gimmes and just played sloppy overall. Then with 2minutes to go in the quarter they found their way. Kobe scored 6 and had an assist in those 2 minutes and the Lakers did not look back after that stretch.

The next two quarters were classic Lakers basketball; great ball movement, fast break offense, nice defensive footwork and good rebounding technique. Kobe also followed up a 1-8 start with a scoring tear that only Kobe can provide after such a shaky start. His jumpshots started getting the lift they needed and Kobe even took it to the basket, something we have not seen much of this season.

Once again Bynum (Andrew that is) was dominant. I can’t even think of a center, not named Dwight Howard, that can slow him down. The only scary combo is Perkins / Garnett / Sheed, but he is capable of manhandling them too. Historically he has gotten into foul trouble so he hasn’t been able to play his game. But those foul problems seem to be behind him now. He is going to start on the All Star team this year and should be in contention for Most Improved Player as well.

Two pieces of analysis:

1) Teams cannot defend the Lakers one on one. The only way to slow the Lakers is to stop the ball from getting to the post AND stopping Kobe from penetrating. The Nuggets and Rockets play energetic team defense and are capable of playing that brand of defense. The Pistons and 90% of the league cannot. They try to stop the Lakers by defending the ball and reacting to the Lakers. The Lakers offense is too good for that kind of defensive strategy. The Cavs and Celtics play the same kind of defense as the Nuggets and Rockets and hopefully with Pau we will be able to exploit them with Pau on the high post.

2) If you want to know when the Lakers are playing bad defense just watch where the opponents shots are taken. When the Lakers break down defensively the opponents get dunks and layups – it’s that simple. Too many dunks and layups in the 4th quarter last night. When the Lakers play good defense, the shots are contested from outside the paint, as was the case for most of the game last night.

Play of the game:

In a normal game it would’ve been Maxiell’s block of Shannon Brown at the rim (the lead picture). But this was no ordinary game. It was the Kobe Bryant show. Here is the play of the game (and year so far).
