The new Pitchfork.tv show “tunnelvision” is a pretty interesting concept. The idea is pretty much that a video captures the beauty and passion of seeing live music in the most interesting way possible without actually getting to see the band live. This video is of The Flaming Lips playing “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots pt.1″ in Del Mar, CA in August of 2009. The video does a great job of sharing the wonder of a Flaming Lips concert, but rarely shows an image of the band themselves. I would give production credit, but I can’t find a listing of who produced this video.

I heard my favourite album of the year in January, just thirteen days into the 365. Released as a digital download on 13 January, my only insight into Fever Ray, Karin Dreijer Anderson’s first solo record outside of the Knife, was its stark cover – Dreijer flanked against a paranormal lanscape of decrepit huts and overgrown wilderness.

By the end of the night I’d played Fever Ray four times, each time letting the ghostly, crow-black synths and temptuous beats scurry a bit more under my skin. Each time pushing sleep’s promise a little further away in favour of another exploration of that strange, addictive wilderness.

It wasn’t until its official release in March that I found out how fitting this first meeting was. Fever Ray was created in the months around the birth of Dreijer’s second child, a time when she found herself continually exhausted. Sleep and awake literally carved up into interrupted patterns with no control. The Knife’s chilling electronics have sometimes felt like the mystery between sleep and awake, but this time Dreijer fully entered the realm, choosing the actual exhausted moments of her new parent self to document when reality and imagination tease each other.

The result was an album that seemed hesitant to emerge into the sunlight; the perpetual cycle of sleep exhaustion when everything seems in slow motion, far too powerful to leave behind. A dream-like state of awake slipping into an anxious state of sleep. I’ve always felt there’s something both addictive and melancholy in those moments, explored late at night, when times seems to slow down, when you’re actually too tired to sleep.

Pitchfork said this week there’s a strong case to be made that Fever Ray is the Music Video Artist of the Year. In fact I think it’s been a long time since an artist has been so consistent in producing such descriptive, fitting videos. Images that echo Fever Ray’s beautiful, haunting music. Scurrying under your skin. Licking your neck like a black dog on your shoulder.

Fever Ray’s latest video, for Keep the Streets Empty, is below. I’ve added the other videos as well.

1974 – punk has begun and a new mentality in the minds of young people has been changed forever. Eve

1974 – punk has begun and a new mentality in the minds of young people has been changed forever. Ever since influential zine Sniffin’ Glue printed three chords in their magazine with the words “this is a chord, this is another chord, this is a third – NOW FORM A BAND” people have picked up their axes and started their own bands.

With the influence punk has had, genre after genre, trend after trend has been created. Out of the ashes of simple punk flies out a phoenix with blacked rimmed Ray-Bans and a baggy white t-shirt with a beach printed on the front and you have surf-punk.

Merging punk, 60’s doo-wop and British garage rock – the ‘nu’ surf-punk (don’t mind the cliché) of the late noughties has won the hearts of the youth and giving a little nod to its peers. Being bought up on The Beach Boys and The Shangri-La’s – and then buying numerous hardcore punk records and 60’s garage compilations has created a cluster of artists here in the UK, in it’s home of the west-coats of the States and even main-land Europe. Out with the cheesy Hawaiian shirts and sweptback Ken doll hair and in with ripped tight stone washed 501’s, baggy tees and a Fender guitar. LA’s Best Coast, London’s Sex Beet, Frances’ The Last Rapes of Mr Teach and New Jersey’s Real Estate have emerged all playing an incarnation of surf-punk. A layered reverbed sound, simple vocal and a simple distorted chord progression mingle and craft sun drenched – sometimes veracious, sometimes laid-back guitar based rock.

This year and last saw a rise in Lo-Fi – groups such as LA’s No Age, Mika Miko and Abe Vigoda all attacked our ears and venue’s here in the UK like a 60’s British Invasion. This is where the rise in Surf acts has caught the ears of keen MySpace hunters delving into the database to find the newest thing to come out of (normally) the States. The laid back life-style of these DIY bands really hit a chord with us post-teens here in gray old Britain. Constantly seeing images of Californians hanging out down the local beach or partying with their ‘buddies’ and ‘dudes’ have made us realize that even though we may not have the pink g-string roller skating hotties and the beautifully contrasted palm tree’s (these people obviously haven’t heard of a little place called Torquay) us foreigners still know how to fuck up someone’s house and have just as good time as those Bay Watch mother fuckers do.

Luckily the years of looking to East London and New York only has slowly fucked off and opened the eyes of the world (even though we all know these places are still churning out fucking epicly good bands) has latched onto this DIY ethic. With the creation of website’s own television channels, the media has sunk their teeth into this juicy 8oz piece of beef. Pitchfork.com/tv have in the past year created their own ‘fuck you’ to MTV and slowly formed various programmes with the mentality running wild in the brains of the creators. Shows such as A.D.D. – which is filmed in a ‘lo-fi’ esq VHS/mono view, has seen Vivian Girls and experimental pioneers Sonic Youth both feature live on the programme. Don’t Look Down – a live performance show filmed on the top of various high buildings across the States has also had various big cheeses in the lo-fi genre perform for the Pitchfork cameras.

Punk will never fuck off – even though we may be bored out of our minds with the word – it won’t, and it’s various other in-carnations will always be relevant. This newfound love of surf-punk is tugging at our hearts once more and making more and more do what others have done before them. So it can’t be a bad thing right?

You’d be forgiven at the moment for thinking we were nearing the end of a decade. The interweb

You’d be forgiven at the moment for thinking we were nearing the end of a decade. The interwebs have been awash of late with more countdowns, best ofs, top tens and general reminiscences of the 2000’s then you could poke a digital stick at. Suddenly everybody is a critic, and while some of the countdowns have been insightful and thought-provoking, others have been….well, like this one. For the nostalgic, these countdowns are practically memory-heaven. But for those who don’t buy into that sort of stuff, it gets a little tiring. So, what better than to list some of the best (and worst) ‘best-of’ lists currently clogging up cyber-space?

Pitchfork: P2K

Over the past months American music site Pitchfork have taken an in-depth look at the decade in music. Way back in the dark ages of 2001 the site barely existed, but since then has grown to be one of the most formidable online music news and reviews sites on the net. Not only does P2K count down the best albums, songs and music videos, it also features a series of essays detailing some of the more interesting developments in music over the past ten years. Of particular note is the ‘Decade in Indie’ and the social history of the mp3.

Highlights
Best Album: Radiohead- Kid A
Best Song: Outkast- B.O.B.

Paste Magazine: The 25 best Album Covers

Slightly more obscure is Paste magazine’s countdown of the best album covers. It has been argued that as digital sales boom and physical CD sales decline, the quality of modern album art is going steadily downhill (as this cover would seem to prove). Regardless, Paste have put together an interesting countdown, which includes the likes of The Flaming Lips, Animal Collective, Arcade Fire and Lil Wayne. Whoever decided to award Neko Case’s Middle Cyclone cover as number 1 though needs to go back and re-take primary school art classes.

Highlights
Club: The 30 best TV Shows

The problem with critics is often that their views on what is ‘good’ differs from the majority of the viewing public. Which is a shame, but it’s also the reason why most of the shows on the A.V. Club’s list of best TV shows of the decade have either ended or been cancelled. Still, it’s a formidable list. The top 3 (The Wire, Arrested Development and the Sopranos) are undoubtedly some of the finest productions since television’s inception, let alone in this decade. Other notable shows include Mad Men, Lost and The West Wing, just scraping in at number 30. The best part of this countdown though is the shitfight in the comments as to what constitutes a ‘decade’. Hilarious.

Highlights
Number 15: Veronica Mars
Number 22: Six Feet Under

News.com.au: Moment of the Decade

Oh, News.com.au. Purveyor of fine, quality journalism. Not content with simply telling Middle Australia what the best bits of the noughties were, good old Rupert has gone and encouraged everyone to name their own favourites! For anyone that’s ever read the comments to any article on the site, that should be enough to click your way on over. In case you need any more incentive though, today’s category is ‘Killers, Haters, Tools: Choose the Villian of the decade’. Apparently Kyle Sandilands and John Mayer are in the same league as Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. Who would have thought? The fun doesn’t stop there. Oh no siree, it doesn’t. For you creative types, you can even have a go at naming what the next decade should be called! An issue of utmost importance, of course. Seriously, the sooner this site becomes paid-only, the better.

Lowlights

Times Online: The 100 Best Movies of the Noughties

Slightly more classy news outlet Times Online went all out and counted down the top 100 cinematic releases of the decade. With everything from political drama Milk to Roman-epic Gladiator to comedy Knocked Up, the list does well to cater for everyone…up until the odd choice of The Bourne Supremacy/Ultimatum at number 2 (So really it should have been the best 101 movies). And Team America World Police in the top 5? You must be joking.

In Brief
Number 1: Hidden
Number 16: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Number 34: Finding Nemo
Number 64: Anchorman

Well that’s about it. Some of the best (and worst) countdowns of the best (and worst) things to happen in the noughties. Of course, a quick google search will reveal thousands more best-ofs then the ones here. But really, is there much point? When it comes down to it, who gets to decide that Franz Ferdinand is better than Hot Chip? Or that Monsters, Inc. deserves to place ahead of Pan’s Labyrinth?

Perhaps the best countdown of the decade should go to Hungry Beast. They look at the ten best years of the 2000’s. You can check that out here.

Fine anno.

MarketWarrior has a new scanning feature that works with data files on your hard drive. This includes text files or Metastock format data. One popular trading method is to swing trade as the price returns to the Median Line. Prices should return to the Median Line about 75% to 80% of the time. These percentage were worked out on the daily time frame and will be different on the intraday time frames. The picture below shows the scans available for the MarketWarrior Super-Pitchfork. The scan I have selected looks for markets in which the prices have not yet returned to the Median Line. This scan will allow you to quickly see the markets that are in a good position for swing trading.

Pitchfork Scanner

The picture below shows the scan results. I set the scanner to scan all the stocks in the NASDAQ 100. The markets which met the scan criteria are listed on the left side in the scan results. The chart below is showing the stock AMLN, Amylin Pharmacy. You can see in the picture below that the price has not yet returned to the most recent Median Line. If you are looking for markets to swing trade, this scan will be very helpful.

It is going to be 2010 in a little over a month. Time for all the critical glances in the rear-view mirror to begin.

Pitchfork was on the ball: by early October, they had implicitly decided that no new music from 2009 would rock their socks and they presented a list of the top 200 albums of the decade. They have graphs and everything. I guess someone finally figured out how to use Excel!

Looking over their list, there is a lot that I agree on. From their top 10, I would definitely have on my list:

#6 Modest Mouse The Moon & Antarctica

#4 Wilco Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

#2 Arcade Fire Funeral

I am on the fence about #1 Radiohead Kid A and #7 The Strokes Is This It. What I am not on the fence about is bumping up something from Sufjan (#16 Sufjan Stevens Illinois) into the top 10.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be starting to say goodbye to this decade of music by filling in this list to create my own Top 10 and writing a short piece on each album in turn.

What did we call this decade anyways? ~LL

I THINK I AM GOING TO PUKE ALL OVER MY CPU SCREEN~ I AM SO DISGUSTED WITH WHAT THE BIGGEST MUSIC SIT

I THINK I AM GOING TO PUKE ALL OVER MY CPU SCREEN~ I AM SO DISGUSTED WITH WHAT THE BIGGEST MUSIC SITES HAVE BECOME. THEY USED TO ALL ACTUALLY TELL IT LIKE IT WAS AND GAVE THEIR OPINIONS WITHOUT WORRYING ABOUT WHAT THE OTHERS WERE GOING TO DO OR WHAT WAS “HIP” OR “COOL” ~ IT’S NOT EVEN ABOUT THE MUSIC ANYMORE, IT’S LIKE THE DAMN MUSIC INDUSTRY (ESPECIALLY THE SUCCESSFUL INDIE CROWD) IS A HIGH SCHOOL PROM AND NOBODY’S SOULS OR HEARTS MATTER, JUST THEIR DRESSES AND WHO THEY ARE BRING WITH THEM TO THE BIG DANCE AND HOW THEY ARE GETTING THERE. I’M GOING TO DO EVERYTHING IN MY POWER TO GET THIS BLOG ONTO THE RIGHT PEOPLE’S COMPUTER SCREENS IN THEIR HOUSES OR APARTMENTS! THERE HAS TO BE PEOPLE WHO FEEL THE WAY THAT I DO. WE MUST RISE AND CREATE A NEW GENRE OF MUSIC IN ALL FACETS OF THE THEORY! IT WON’T BE INDIE, IT WON’T BE ALTERNATIVE, IT WILL HAVE TO BE CALLED “OTHER(TWICE)”

I WROTE THIS ON STEREOGUM AFTER READING THE 4TH LIST FROM PITCHFORK WHICH WAS ONLY 20 INSTEAD OF 50 AND THEY WERE BY FAR THE BEST, THEY GOT MORE GOOD ALBUMS IN 20 PICKS THAN THE OTHERS DID IN 50!!!

HERE IS MY RANT: What if the greatest album ever created comes out next month?! Anyways, Out of all the 4 lists from the Top Guns, Pitchfork got more right in 20 than any of the others did in 50!!!!!!! They are the only ones to include a Modest Mouse Album, I know everyone thinks that Lonesome Crowded West was their Holy Grail & then they sold out, but as a Musician or even a massive fan of music, I think that what Isaac Brock did on The Moon & Antarctica (3 People), Good News For People Who Love Bad News & Even The Johnny Marr Included We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank <— All 3 of them would be in My Top 50 Along With Ugly Cassanova! Silverchair – Diorama One Billion Percent Belongs In Every List~ It just infuriates me that all of these main music sites have to make sure they are still hip in their decision~ I mean, M.I.A is Beyond Amazing, But I don’t think that Arular is even half the album that Kala is and of course that is because she brought in Big Time Producers and all that, but M.I.A as a Singer/Rapper/Producer/Programmer <— She learned and got better at all of those things over the years in between those albums, but NOT ONE LIST HAD KALA, Just Arular Because It Is Cooler & More Hip To Say So & I Think Modest Mouse Made No Lists Because Of The Same Thing.. It’s Just Ridiculous. I am going to start a Music Blog & I am going to put the time, dedication and money behind it to get it into peoples heads and I will not bow down to what others think I should think. It is really getting pathetic at this point. HE DREAMS AWAKE Better Be In The Top 10 Of The Next Decade’s Lists~ If they want weird, unique, completely different in shape/sound/structure – That is where HDAWAKE Prevails by Landslides~

I MAY BE INSANE, BUT IT IS A BEAUTIFUL & BRILLIANT INSANITY.. AT LEAST THAT’S WHAT I TELL MYSELF WHEN I’M TRYING TO FALL ASLEEP ;P

HERE IS THE PITCHFORK TOP 20 OF THE LAST DECADE

Top Album Of The Decade

NME’S 50 GREATEST OF THE LAST 10 YEARS

UNCUT’S TOP 20 ALBUMS OF THE ’00s

I HAD ACTUALLY LET UNCUT SLIP PAST ME & THEIR TOP 20 IS BETTER THAN HORRIBLE~ I WOULD TAKE THE TWO TOP 20’s OVER BOTH TOP 50 LISTS COMBINED TO A DESERTED ISLAND FOR THE REST OF MY OWN ETERNITY, NOT SAYING THAT WOULD BE EVEN DECENT, BUT IT WOULD DEFINITELY BE…… BETTER THAN NOTHING (i think)~

LET’S HOPE NOSTRADAMUS WAS WRONG ABOUT 2012 ALONG WITH THAT GROUP OF HARDCORE CHRISTIANS!!

ONE LAST THING.. ONE BIG ASS QUESTION: WHERE THE F#@K IS ELLIOTT SMITH’S FROM A BASEMENT ON A HILL??!!!!!!!!! IT DIDN’T MAKE ONE SINGLE LIST AND IT HAS A FEW OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONGS EVER WRITTEN AND HE IS TALKING ABOUT PURE PAIN AND FRUSTRATION BECAUSE HE STUCK A F#@KING KNIFE IN HIS HEART BEFORE HE EVEN RELEASED IT. IT WAS A DOUBLE ALBUM AND IT BELONGS ON ALL 4 OF THOSE LISTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT THE F#CK EVER~

so tonight i went to see new moon…….. i know, how unlikely. i enjoyed it a bit more than twilight – partly because i was laughing the whole way through, partly due to the reaction of the crowd – and also it did look quite nice at times. i’ve been avoiding any talk of the soundtrack, just noticing but not following headlines on pitchfork about thom yorke and death cab contributing.

to be fair, thom’s track is quite amazing.

in other thom-related news, i picked up the collection of his remixes (or rmxs) the other day – i know i’m two years late on that, but i didn’t think it was available on cd! it’s a japanese import, i saw it in hmv, i couldn’t resist. it’s gold! i’d heard a few of the remixes already, but the field’s reworking of cymbal rush is simply mesmerising. quelle surprise.

here’s the burial remix of and it rained all night, quite appropriate a) because burial sounds best in november and b) on account of the flooding across the country this week. not that i want to make light of that horrible situation at all.

Well, NME are near the Top of the BEST MUSIC WEBSITES for a reason and have once again given us a glimpse into their minds with their(DUH DUH DUH!!!!!)

LIST OF THE 50 GREATEST ALBUMS OF THE DECADE~ I hate to say it, but I am going to make my first Proclamation as a Music Blogger = This is THE LIST THAT MISSED!!

I Don’t Know If I Agree With The TOP 10 & I am going to check out the #1 Pick again to make sure that I completely disagree~

This Is About YOU THOUGH, SO GO AHEAD & CH-CH-CH-CHECK IT OUT —–> Stereogum’s 50 Greatest Albums Of The ’00s

If Nothing Else, There Should Have Been AT LEAST ONE ALBUM BY A CERTAIN BAND WHO I BELIEVE IS THE GREATEST AMERICAN ROCK BAND OF THE LAST 13 YEARS

(Funny Number I Know, But That Is How Long They Have Been Putting Out Albums) – I mean, even if you are part of the crowd that believes they “Sold Out,” Their 3rd Album & The First Of The Thousands SHOULD BE IN THERE, NO QUESTIONS ASKED. I will write more soon enough, I don’t want to ruin it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet and I know how pi$$ed I can get if there is a Massive Spoiler in something I am reading about something that I am about to Hear, Watch, See or Read (Does that make sense?! Just think about it

Woo Hoo!! My 2nd PoST~!!

Respect~

Cheers~

As everybody on campus rushes off to be with their loved ones for Thanksgiving, WAMH will be right h

As everybody on campus rushes off to be with their loved ones for Thanksgiving, WAMH will be right here in the Valley, with our one true love…Pitchfork.

Actually, no, we mean music. I mean, Pitchfork seems cool but they can probably be a real dick sometimes. Like if you were at a party, the conversation would go something like this:

Pitchfork: “Oh, hey! How have you been?”

You: “Well, OK..my mom recently got really si-”

Pitchfork: “GREAT! Well, I think I see the guy from Animal Collective over there so good luck with that cancer, acid reflux, whatever you were babbling about thing.”

You: :cries:

Needless to say, Pitchfork has become the authority on all things underground (or not). They’re a force to be reckoned with and even if you don’t agree with them all of the time, it feels great to proclaim “PITCHFORK IS JUST A BUNCH OF ASSHOLES!”

Which is why we have decided to count down the Top 100 albums of the past decade (as decided by Pitchfork) live on WAMH 89.3 this week.

Sure, you can go to http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/7706-the-top-200-albums-of-the-2000s-200-151/and dryly read reviews about 200 albums (which even we are reluctant to do) OR you can tune into WAMH and we’ll do all the work for you.

Tune in starting Saturday, Nov. 22 8-9:30 PM EST for 100-75 and join us every night until we do the Top 25 of the decade on Tuesday night, Nov. 24!

Have a great Thanksgiving, dear listeners!
