Stuart Murdoch has a new project. It’s not new actually, it’s been years in the making, but it’s almost ready for you to hear! You may know him as the leader of indie pop juggernauts Belle & Sebastian. Now he’s taken his well honed musical stylings and created an indie pop musical called God Help the Girl. The soundtrack, which is sure to be excellent, includes a couple of reworked B & S favorites as well as a bunch of new songs written by Murdoch. He’s gotten help from all his usual cohorts on this one, including a few ladies chosen from an internet talent competition/casting effort. But it’s the new Scottish singer Catherine Ireton of the band the Go Away Birds that sings the lion’s share of the songs as well as graces the cover of the album above (which is in true B & S fashion). Check her out on the video to the first single from the album, Come Monday Night. (video via Pitchfork.tv)

The second video is a sort of behind the scenes/introduction to the process and story of the musical.

Matt Berninger and The National make some of the best ’stuck in your head, in and out of love, train wreck’ music I’ve ever heard. And I should know, as I have basically mastered the same subject. The lyrics and music have the raw vulnerability of a still open wound, not yet clean. But if you don’t feel like getting too deep with it, their songs can just be a great melody, a hook and a moody soundtrack for a summer night’s ride.

What is happening in the blogosphere today?

There’s those interesting recent newsbits over at Pitchfork about M.I.A. getting nominated for an Oscar and getting all witty with the press, Animal Collective getting “ill” and canceling a show, Kanye West denying that he’s going to shoot a bisexual porno with Blackzilla, and The Black Lips getting hit by bottles at India shows.  But that’s all already been reported on.

Nyctaper posted the Bowery Ballroom Animal Collective set, but he already had added the link to the comments on yesterday’s post (and it looks like his server has crashed again).

I was going to post the “Comfy in Nautica” live cut from the other night, but I just noticed that Gorilla vs. Bear posted it already.

Bought my tickets to Animal Collective in Vancouver early this morning.  Never really enjoy buying tickets from Ticket Master.

Laughed a bunch when I noticed the Ask Jeph section in the Questionable Content forums… man people have a lot of time to waste online (hehehe).  But honestly, I can’t much relate to being a part of the majority of forum discussions (but I’m certainly glad that other people are into it).

Had a brief moment of excitement when I realized that “the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared the way for the first trial to see if human embryonic stem cells can treat people safely”

Got a little annoyed when I heard that the Apple Store guy was trying to charge my little sister $200 to install Microsoft Word on the new MacBook she’s purchasing.

The One Week Only Kraftwerk film started streaming at Pitchfork.tv – but I never seem to get around to watching those films.

Installed iWork on my iMac just to see if there really still are word processing incompatibility issues between Windows and Mac OS… and the results are “no not really, you just have to make sure you save/export the documents properly”

And I’ve been listening to a huge list of remixes all morning, and so far only a few are really worth posting.  I just never really enjoy remixes.  I usually download a bunch of them, and don’t listen to them for awhile, and then I end up with a folder full of remixes that I’ve never heard.  And then I dread going through the folder and separating the good from the bad.

I also have to keep in mind that what I would actually listen to on my own, and what I would play in a DJ set are often different (which is sort of weird, I think). I just only ever listen to complete albums on my own time.

FYI: Most of the MP3s in this post have been posted somewhere else in the blogosphere prior to this, so if you’re a keener you might already have them.

These two songs were in my remix playlist this morning, and I enjoy them, but neither of them are actually remixes.

Pt. I is a little cheesy with the prevalent and heavily vocoded vocals, and Pt. II is a little easier to digest (at least for me).

This story surfaced a while ago.  I had a really good laugh back during the Embarrassing Moment Comment Contest (where the most embarrassing moment was how few people commented) when “notpietur” explained that:

He’s got a good point though, Dead Man’s Bones sounds pretty decent thus far, and the fact that it is Ryan Gosling singing is, well, really weird.

It was designed by “fashion forward” bullet proof designer Miguel something, and last year VBS.tv interviewed Miguel. He shoots all his employees before their first shift, and is thinking about opening bullet proof fashion boutiques all around the world.

I don’t know enough about national news television to say for sure, but my guess is that the appearance was mutually beneficial/done for free.

The New Pornographer’s frontman, A.C. Newman, is releasing his second solo album January 20th on Matador Records, where you can pre-order the CD and save $3 .  The band recorded several tracks from his upcoming album Get Guilty at a studio in Brooklyn last Monday for Pitchfork.tv. Here’s the video for “Like A Hitman, Like A Dancer.”

In exciting news from Sweden, The Knife’s Karin Dreijer is releasing a solo album as Fever Ray this winter.

Her first single from the forthcoming self titled debut is “If I Had a Heart” – and it’s certainly a lot more downbeat than anything from The Wizard of Oz.

The video is dark, and creepy, and beautifully composed, and perfectly compliments Karin’s eerie vocals.  This might be the best low-light footage I’ve ever seen in a music video – my compliments go to Andreas Nilsson for directing.

I am really excited for this album, as The Knife’s Silent Shout (2006) is one of my favorite albums to date.  And it sounds like Karin is carrying over a lot of the positive qualities from The Knife to Fever Ray.

Electroma fue publicado en 2006 y es el último film que ha creado Daft Punk, tras D.A.F.T.: A Story About Dogs, Androids, Firemen and Tomatoes (1999) e Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (2003), y que contribuyen a que Daft Punk no sea sólo un grupo musical, sino todo un proyecto artístico.

Electroma es una prolongación del tema Human After All, y cuenta la historia de dos robots que quieren convertirse en humanos, y con ese fin hacen un recorrido por la América profunda. Al contrario que en los anteriores films de Daft Punk, no suena ninguna de sus canciones, sino de otros músicos como Brian Eno o Sébastien Tellier, aunque también tengo que decir que tiene muy poco sonido y apenas diálogo.

El film dura 74 minutos y y es una auténtica paranoia, como no cabía esperar menos viniendo de Daft Punk, así que sinceramente hay que ser fan convencido, o sino la cosa puede ser un poco pesada.

MIA is preggers. What does this mean to us???

First: Fashion blogs have begun to forecast the coming in of tights for preggers.  Now, not only will tights be fashionable for American Apparel-eque alt aesthetics, but also for preggers.

Does this mean tights will cease to be “in” for non-preggers???

And what about tights for obese people???

Are they still popular but not recommended???

Second: Since MIA has been preggers I have noticed other preggers on the Internet.

Is MIA’s preggers contagious???

or

Were these other preggers already preggers but now they’re getting more attention online for being preggers because MIA is preggers???

or

Is MIA innovating a hip new body image trend: being preggers???

Third: If being preggers is a hip new body image trend who will be the early adopters???  Will it be your GF!?

Should we all worry about GFs trying to get preggers on purpose???

Will the hippest girls jump on the trend first???

If my GF still wears bootcut jeans will she be in the Late Majority of fashion adopters, thus allowing me time to render her/myself sterile in the meanwhile???

Will this trend make it to the GAPstream like skinny jeans have (can you get those in the GAP?) or was/is this already a trend in the GAPstream that MIA is borrowing, pulling tights over, and calling alternative???

MIA did put “Paperplanes” in Pinapple Express… was/is she actually a GAP KID???

Fourth: Will (as one may anticipate) the preggers look be strictly for girls, or will it be unisexual like skinny jeans???

I know all of you all are asking yourselves “can boys really be preggers too???”

No, boys cannot be preggers too (not without experimental doctors); however, if this fashion trend evolves into a sexless, or unisexual trend, then perhaps the appearance of a preggers belly, and not just the authentic preggers belly will be considered fashionable.

I mean sure, an authentically preggers belly is going to be, well, more authentic, but you remember how Urban Outfitters started selling Tees even though American Apparel already sold Tees???  Well it’s kind of like that. Everyone knows that American Apparel’s Tees are the ALTthentic Tees, but the Urban Outfitters Tees are still fashionable, just less ALTthentic.

So will boys stuff their Tees with something that looks preggers (like GAPgirlz stuff their Tees with something that looks breast-like)???

or

Will boys wear The Beerbelly Deluxe Kit under their Tees, and also be able to drink Pilsner/Blue Ribbon while appearing to be preggers???

or

Will it only be trendy for boys to have preggers looking bellies if they have ALTthentic Pilsner/Blue Ribbon beer bellies???

and

If the somewhat preggers appearing boy bellies become ALTthentic, will tights become fashionable for boys too???

or

Will this current/new pant trend suffice for the boy version of preggers pants???
