Have you ever tried to navigate your house when it is pitch black inside? I have and am able to do

Have you ever tried to navigate your house when it is pitch black inside? I have and am able to do so by memory if I go slow enough, but I have grown reluctant since my children have begun to leave toys out. Have you ever stepped on a die-cast car in bare feet? Even if you don’t fall to the ground and hurt yourself that way, you stand a good chance of hurting your foot just from the little sharp corners pricking and cutting into your skin. Imagine trying to move through your darkened house in a hurry – perhaps you heard the crash of glass, or the scream of one of your children.

In my haste, I try to rely on my memory, my good low light vision and my senses to keep me safe, but often find myself bumping into things, stepping on things that I had either failed to notice on the ground or had forgotten, or otherwise misjudging distances. It is not that I don’t have flashlights or the ability to turn on the room lights or hall lights in order to see better, it’s that I choose not to do so either as a courtesy to my wife who is still asleep or to avoid waking up my other son.

There’s something else there as well though. It’s a reliance on my own senses and recollection. It’s an innate confidence that I can handle whatever I come across even in the dark of night. It is in the many times I have slammed my head into something in the dark, stepped on a toy car, or kicked a door frame and broken a toe as I tried to pass through it that I have come to realize how foolish I am for trying to navigate the dark on my own.

Light and dark as an interplay within the Bible have been exhaustively examined. My reliance on myself in navigating my house is a great example of how easy it is for us to trip up in life. In the past, I have tried to navigate by faith, not in the Light, but in my own human senses and memory. It would be much easier and less painful if I just reached over and grabbed my flashlight before I took the first step.

The dark can be a frightening thing without a way to guide you through it. It hides, conceals, dulls the senses in one aspect while elevating others to the point of hysteria even. The imagination runs wild with all of the possibilities that can happen under cover of night. It is no wonder to me that night is used as the metaphor for evil in the Bible as evil is easily recognized when exposed to the Light, but when darkness falls, it becomes much harder. Psychologically, we all fear the night at some level and for good reason, danger lurks in the shadows at every turn waiting to trip us up and ruin us.

What are we to do?

Firstly, have faith in the Light of Christ. Second, own the night.

So, a question to ponder – how can we come to own the night?

Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light. It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.

John 11:9-10

You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.

John 12:35-36

Website owners are often the favorite target for Internet scammers. Odds are you are paying a small fee to keep your site running. Do you not wish you couldmake some additional money with the website you work so hard to maintain? To a webmaster, affiliate marketing is almost always the answer to this dilemma. By displaying adds from reputable companies you can send interested people tothere sites and perhaps purchase a product. When this happens you will earn a percentage of the sale as a finder’s fee.

This being said there is a dark side to affiliate marketing that can jeopardize your good name as a webmaster. For example, have you ever been surfing the web and come across a website that touts an amazing nutritional supplement that does
it all? Weight loss for the overweight, hair growth for the bald, an increased sexual stamina for those lacking it and a host of other items are cured or corrected with a pill after breakfast, lunch and dinner. These miracle cures are touted on the
website via a long list of testimonials, and you can almost always recognize the feel of these sites simply by the long list of text they sport, the varying fonts employed, and also the different colors these words are written in. You may simply shrug your shoulders at such a site until you see a copy of a commission check the webmaster has posted and suddenly he or she has your undivided attention. The check is small enough to be realistic yet big enough to consider
what you could to with the extra money.

Once they have your attention, the spiel usually involves a site owner who is so successful that he or she has decided to take on two or three qualified novices and train them to do the business as well. This involves selling the miracle product to your friends and neighbors and then just sitting back and waiting for the money to roll in. Additionally, you will need to post banners on your website. What has just happened, in a nutshell, is an affiliate scam that ties your success directly into a multi-level marketing scheme. While your links will attract more interested parties to the originator’s website, you are meanwhile alienating your friends and families by the legal drugs you are peddling. This is not what affiliate marketing is all about, and it is important that you understand the implications of your putting links or banners of any business on your website.

Don’t get caught up in the game.

You can get so deep in your feelings that you begin to play the games of the person you are interested in. A game is a strategy or a series of strategies. If both people are being frank, then there is no need for games. However, both people have to be honest for such a thing to work. Being drawn into a game with someone who is little better than a stranger, is like entering a maze. You don’t have the slightest clue what you could encounter, or the pitfalls you could come across.

Have you been planning and planning your church’s capital campaign, but it doesn’t seem like the project is moving forward? Or, have you begun your campaign, and it’s not running as smoothly as you expected?

At CCS we hear these concerns from church leaders quite often. You’re stuck in the dreaded pitfalls of capital campaign planning. One consistent theme of successful campaigns – whether you are a large or small church – is excellent planning.

Luke 14:28:
For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it?

Here are 5 pitfalls of planning that can sabotage your capital campaign, and the solutions to get you moving forward:

Pitfall #1 – Deciding to build when your membership is declining.
Churches that are losing membership often decide to build something. It could be a fellowship hall, a new modern sanctuary, or a ministry center. It’s easy for churches to unintentionally get caught up in the idea and excitement of a new facility – without a plan to gain new members, change the age demographic, etc. But without a plan for growth, this “Build it and they will come” mentality seldom if ever works.

CCS Recommends – Start with a strategic plan for ministries that will attract new members. Then, implement and staff the program before embarking on major facility changes.

Pitfall #2 – Trying to build and later fund a master plan in one step.
By taking on large debt, a congregation may “sentence” itself to ten or more years of continual capital campaigns and become facilities poor, under-compensate its staff, reduce mission investment, and more.

CCS Recommends – You can modify your building plan so that it can be funded in no more than two consecutive capital campaigns, usually within five times your current annual contributions. It is fine to have a master plan, but understand that it may require several revisits over time as boards change and new leaders emerge with a differing view of the future.

Pitfall #3 – Building to satisfy your current aging membership.
When there is no voice, the potential new members or agencies outside of your community of faith are not considered in your planning. This can obviously lead to the end of a community of faith if they fail to pass on their legacy to the next generation. Another similar obstacle can arise when a church plans for a major facilities change without first consulting civic governing bodies, such as zoning boards.

CCS Recommends – When conducting strategic planning feedback sessions be sure to include external stakeholders. Those stakeholders should include civic authority, local planning boards, school administrations, and especially the “new member” who is not occupying a seat in your pews.

Pitfall #4 – Using visionary planning without the evidence to back it up.
Your members need enough detail to assure them that the plan will work and what it will look like. Very few of us have the ability to visualize from narrative descriptions or concept drawings created by artists, not architects. We have seen entire building layouts changed because elevator shafts couldn’t be accommodated and HVAC systems had to be relocated.

CCS Recommends – Most architects insist on being in on the early part of facilities planning, and rightfully so. However, it is not necessary to go too far down the road with an architect before you gain congregation support in committing to fund the plan or to participating in a feasibility study.

Pitfall #5 – Planning changes to sacred places within your church.
Your members may have a sentimental and emotional attachment to certain areas of your church. You know which areas these are. It can be very risky to plan changes to sacred places within your facility – such as the sanctuary, chapel, or other named building components – without getting your membership on board first.

CCS Recommends – Set out early to get your congregation’s buy-in for any changes planned for these spaces. Occasionally, we can’t change minds to become proponents for change, but we should be able to keep every member from actively working against a proposed and well thought out plan.

CCS and its trained consultants can help you avoid the pitfalls of planning. Please call us today at 888.558.6873 and take the next steps to assist your church and your congregation in moving forward with a solid vision for the future.

There are many ways to convert a String to a Number. I can think of at least 5 ways to convert a string into a number!

parseInt(num); // default way (no radix)
parseInt(num, 10); // parseInt with radix (decimal)
parseFloat(num) // floating point
Number(num); // Number constructor
~~num //bitwise not
num / 1 // diving by one
num * 1 // multiplying by one
num - 0 // minus 0
+num // unary operator "+"

Which one to use when? When? Why? This tip is an analysis of each one and it’s common pitfalls.

According to a couple benchmarks in JsPerf.com most browsers have optimal response for ParseInt. Although it may be the fastest, here are some common mistakes parseInt does:

parseInt('08') // returns 0 in some old browsers.
parseInt('44.jpg') // returns 44

parseInt: Always use it with a radix = parseInt(num, 10), don’t use it if you don’t want it to guess from characters.

What about ParseFloat? It’s all good if you never handle hexadecimal numbers; for instance:

parseInt(-0xFF) // returns -255
parseInt("-0xFF") // returns -255
parseFloat(-0xFF) // returns -255
parseFloat("-0xFF") // returns 0

(Note, a negative hexadecimal number in a string is a special case that will go funky town in your application if you are parsing it. Make sure to always check for NaN values in your app to avoid surprises)

Plus, it retains the problem as parseInt with characters in the number:

parseFloat('44.jpg') // returns 44

**parseFloat: Be careful with hexadecimal numbers, don’t use it if you don’t want it to guess from characters.”

The next one is Bitwise not (~). You can use that to convert a string to an integer only, but it’s not for floating numbers. The good thing about it is that it will return “0″ if a character appears.

~~1.23 // returns 1
~~"1.23" // returns 1
~~"23" // returns 23
~~"Hello world" // returns 0

What is it doing? It’s “flipping”) each bit, also known as the A1 complement of the number. You can use, but be aware that it’s storing integers, so don’t use it unless you are sure your number ranges between the values of a signed 32 bit integer (this is because in the spec it calls ToInt32).

Bitwise not, use it to ensure input doesn’t have a character in it, only for integers

What about Number? Number has the same problem that parse* in a way that it will try to figure it out which number you are giving to it:

Number("023") // returns 23
Number(023) // returns 19

(Note, 023 is ACTUALLY an octal number. No matter what you do, it will return 19; goes the same for hexadecimal ones without double or single quotes)

Number was also one of the slowest outcomes in JsPerf.

Number, pretty much don’t use it

The last ones are unary operators.

"1.23" * 1 // returns 1.23
"0xFF" - 0 // returns 255
"0xFF.jpg" / 1 // returns NaN
+"023" // returns 23

Unlike the others, unary operators will be really happy to throw you a
NaN
value if they see anything funky. They are my favorite way to convert numbers, because anything with a character shouldn’t be considered neither 0 or “guessed” according to how many digits it has. I pick most of the time the
+
operator because is the least confusing one. They don’t have the best performance though, although
-0
has been giving good results.

Best way to convert string to a number?

Negative hexadecimal numbers are the only ones that break inside a string. Any other number should be first parsed into a String (through + “” for instance) and then parsed to a number with a unary operator or a parseInt with a radix. parseFloat takes advantage of performance, but can give you some numeric values where a
NaN
is more appropriate.

Yeah, you didn’t think I’d go there did you? I freakin’ went there. I’m actu

Yeah, you didn’t think I’d go there did you? I freakin’ went there.

I’m actually a huge fan of werewolf movies, despite the fact that they often put across a negative image. I often just laugh at what they get wrong. It’s so goddamn funny sometimes how far off the mark people are, y’know?

Of course, as with many types of horror movies, there’s many mistakes that are made that make the audience go “WTF!?”

So, let’s talk about a few of those

Staying to watch the transformation

Why does this always happen? With the exception of perhaps the underworld series, the transformation is always shown as something pretty slow. Not as slow as the reality of about 10 minutes or so, but long enough to give someone near chance to run. You would’ve thought at some point, they’d realise what was happening and run. Or at least, realise SOMETHING bad was happening, something they shouldn’t be present for.

The example of this in “the howling” has to be the worst. She shoots the guy, and he proceeds to pull the bullet out, and turn into a werewolf, and neither the guy turning and the women watching move from where they’re standing during the entire thing. The fact she shot him surely means she thought he had pretty bad intentions even before he grew fangs, claws, and a fur coat. Why the hell are you still there, woman!?

“Beware the moon” LOLNOPE.

Okay, so in reality, it has nothing to do with the moon. In films, it often has everything to do with it. Yet the victim rarely makes much of an attempt to protect himself or others. This is more understandable when they don’t know, when some seemingly crazy person or even someone they didn’t think was real warns them of the full moon. But after the first shift, inexcusable. I mean, wouldn’t they at least lock the door? Even if they simply thought they were experiencing a strange form of insanity? Would locking the door, somehow, be a bad thing?

Of course, with hollywood’s tendency to give werewolves hulk-like strength, one questions how much someone could do, but often in these movies, it’s made clear the wolf can’t get past at least some materials.

This one has many examples, but the worst, almost because the victim eventually does figure something out that’s almost so obvious that you can’t quite believe they didn’t think of it before, is George from the fantastic BBC three series, “Being Human”. Check that one out if you haven’t already, but for gods sake, not the american version. For the better part of a series in which george’s normal transformation place (an abandoned part of the local hospital) is destroyed, he simply goes deep into the woods, hoping not to harm anyone. It seems to take ages for him to think of the option of, y’know, a goddamn cage. Especially seeming as he lives with a vampire and a ghost who know of his condition and neither of which seem to need much, if any, sleep.

“I may be conspicuously absent whenever the beast attacks, I may avoid silver like the plague, and I may have been caught eating raw meat, but that doesn’t mean i’m the werewolf!”

This happens, mostly, in really bad werewolf movies. Poorly written ones, at least, in which the werewolf is so obvious, they may as well walk around with a sign or something. There isn’t much more to say, really.

Well, that’s it for now. Maybe at some point I’ll do a list of my favourite/most hilariously wrong werewolf movies.

Today I have woken up feeling completely rubbish. I’m a hot, sweaty, shivery mess. Again. I’ve been on and off like this since 18th December and I’m still suffering with earache.

After ringing my GP again, to be told again that they have no available appointments AGAIN. I’ve been left with no choice but to take my sick self off to a&e. 20 minutes it took to walk in, see a nurse, book in, see a doctor and process my prescription. 20 minutes. (I love the NHS)

I’ve relented to flu and let it ruin my Christmas season and my training has been pushed back to the point where my final session will be complete a mere 48hrs before the event, and that’s factoring in only ONE rest day in 7. Hardcore.

I have a run scheduled for today and I won’t let illness deter me. My appointments with the gym are non negotiable.

All organizations need a discipline that makes them face up to reality.

All organizations need to know that virtually no program or activity will perform effectively for a long time without modification and redesign. Eventually every activity becomes obsolete. Among organizations that ignore this fact, the worst offender is government. Indeed, the inability to stop doing anything is the central disease of government and a major reason why government today is sick. Hospitals and universities are only a little better than government in getting rid of yesterday.

Businessmen are just as sentimental about yesterday as bureaucrats. They are just as likely to respond to the failure of a product or program by doubling the efforts invested in it. But they are, fortunately, unable to indulge freely in their predilections. They stand under an objective discipline, the discipline of the market. They have an objective outside measurement, profitability. And so they are forced to slough off the unsuccessful and unproductive sooner or later. In other organizations – government, hospitals, the military, and so on- economics is only a restraint.

All organizations must be capable of change. We need concepts and measurements that give to other kinds of organizations what the market test and profitability yardstick give to business. Those tests and yardsticks will be quite different.

I’ve said for a long time that I am concerned about the accuracy of performance claims on Open

I’ve said for a long time that I am concerned about the accuracy of performance claims on Open Source NoSQL databases. In this blog post I give you a couple of links to people who have tried these databases in the Real World and found them wanting.

Most databases will (or should!) perform just fine out of the box. You try the examples and samples that come with them and they will be blisteringly fast. Step beyond these, however, and you start to come across performance issues. This is true of any technology that is either a) Not been around long enough to have Best Practice guides/expertise and b) Only tested against theoretical workloads rather than Enterprise real-world workloads across many customers, on business critical systems.

Clifford Farrugia has a great article on MongoDB performance pitfalls, for example, that makes this very point. Amongst other things he mentions that MongoDB suffers in complex queries because in its implementation these large result sets have to be processed by a JavaScript engine. He also points out that the language bindings for MongoDB can have their own performance issues. I suspect this again is due to a lack of real-world workload performance testing.

Clifford Farrugia has another article where he compares disc usage between MySQL and MongoDB. To a certain extent a document-orientated NoSQL database will always use more disc space. This is because they by default have a bunch of indexes turned on “just in case”. What is particularly interesting here though are the subtle points he makes around MongoDB not having data compression, and how much impact longer data item names (that’s right – names, not content) has on storage use.

He makes the valid point that if your app is not read-heavy, then having a memory mapped implementation that relies on having enough RAM for all the cached data (rather than on the fly cache optimisation like MarkLogic) can be an expensive alternative. Yes Open Source software is free, but the hardware ain’t.

I’ve also found a great thread on Stack Overflow about CouchDB performance being less than ideal. This makes some great points again about design deficiencies and their impact on performance. Particularly worrying are comments about CouchDB’s HTTP layer being slow (ironic given it’s an Apache project), and that a document in the hundreds of KB (yes, KB) is larger than what someone might expect to be managed by CouchDB! CouchDB’s on the fly JSON encoding/decoding comes in for criticism too.

It does sound like I’m bashing the others, and to an extent I am, but I’m not making this stuff up. Just search for “<your fave NoSQL DB> performance issues” and you’ll see a plethora of problems. Do the same query for MarkLogic, and the first thread you come across that isn’t from our website or a detailed tuning guide is this one on Stack Overflow. I found this particulary amusing, as both the top two Answers mention the authors dropping Open Source databases for MarkLogic when the performance or scale reaches a critical point. Clearly for real world loads MarkLogic is on to something.

Lack Of Information
My first hurdle in losing weight was finding the right information. I didn’t realize that eating more protein would help raise my metabolism, or that cutting fatty foods would greatly decrease my overall calorie intake. Since I didn’t have Internet as a teenager I had to seek out information in magazines and books, then experiment to find out what information was correct. Good information is critical in staying skinny, and fortunately most of us have access to great information. You just have to do the research to find it, and experiment a bit to figure out what techniques work for you.

Lack Of Healthy Foods
At age sixteen I very rarely went to the grocery store. The house was stocked with doughnuts, cookies and the like. Dinner was served almost every night, and these meals were not exactly beneficial to my goals. I realized that if I wanted to get skinny I had to take charge of my food environment and have a supply of healthy food on hand. I took the initiative to start going to the store regularly and buying the foods I needed for my diet. This was a big step for me, because being surrounded by junk food and very little healthy food is detrimental to anyone’s weight loss program, no matter how motivated they are. It’s essential to have the good foods on hand, and if there are foods you know you’ll binge on, just don’t buy them. You won’t eat what you don’t have.

Dieting Too Hard
At one time, I figured if I starved myself for a few weeks I’d get skinny and then could go back to eating doughnuts and drinking soda. This example may sound pretty stupid, but a lot of people actually fall into the same trap. They go on a “diet”, which to them means pain and suffering. Then they give up after a short time without reaching to their goals. Instead of torturing yourself with a short term “diet” it’s much more effective to pick something you can stick to permanently. This strategy is how I finally went from 220 to 155 pounds in about a year. I picked a nutrition and exercise plan that was not torture, and that I knew I could do for a very long time.

Lack Of Motivation
Before I ever tried to lose weight, I had a list of excuses for why I didn’t need to. “I know being fat increases my risk for heart disease and diabetes, but I’m young I don’t have to worry about stuff like that now.” Or “I’m not fat, it’s all muscle.” I find that people often are in denial of how serious their problem is, and that’s because they know fixing the problem will take a lot of work. Measure the circumference of your stomach, have someone take pictures of you in your swimsuit, get your cholesterol levels checked, check your BMI, whatever it takes to face the truth. This is an ongoing process for sure. Over the years I have received thousands of wake-up calls to remind me to stay on track. And it works. The worst thing you can do is live in denial and never even make the effort to better yourself.
