Re-reading Tamora Pierce has reminded me a lot of when I first got the internet. All I remember doing was frequenting Tamora RPGs and fansites for that first summer when I discovered her work. I loved Tortall and wanted everybody to know. I needed to find like-minded people and be friends with them, because obviously they would be cool people. I still people TP fans are fantastic people.

I remember two sites, mainly, from back then. First was Steelsings – an imperious-looking RPG even all those years ago (over a decade). The “good” characters (the main cast, basically) were all long-taken, so I moved along quietly, not quite ready to make my own person and shove her into Tortall. Next, and most-loved, was Symphony of Fantasy. It hailed from the time when everybody had geocities sites and it was the best. There was an Enchantress Guild, everybody wrote poetry, stories and fanfiction. The message boards were addictive, as was Pixie Dust.

The girl at the centre of it all was Alleria and she was wonderful. I wished that I could write as well as her. Sepheti became a true friend who faithfully wrote real letters to me for years, and I regret losing ties with her years ago now. Some of the girls banded together and produced an e-zine called UnLadylike, the brainchild of Ainet if I remember rightly, which I read for a while, but now seems to have disappeared into the ether.

I hope that these girls, women now, are doing well in their lives. There were Australians, Americans, Canadians and little English geese like me – so the potential for where everybody has ended up is immense. There were dreams abound in those days. Actresses, musicians, writers – creativity in every guise. I really hope that somehow the people who got me through the tough transition from knowing child to hopeless teen are using their potential, even if their lives have burrowed through into unexpected directions.

So, a toast, girls: to you, Netty, Sepheti, Sandy, Kiz, Cassi and Alleria (and others whose names have escaped me). Thank you for being great creative spirits way back when, and I hope you continue to be so today.

Business success requires effective marketing. People have spent considerable energy trying to define marketing, but just for fun I’ve listed 10 things marketing is not.

1. A silver bullet. Some people unrealistically expect a single marketing tactic to be extremely effective or to easily cure a major prevailing problem.
2. Pixie dust. Although marketing can produce magical results, there’s no magic potion or formula that can produce instant results.
3. Icing on the cake. Marketing must always be an essential ingredient, not something that’s added later to make the product or service look prettier or taste sweeter.
4. Communications. Too often, especially in nonprofit organizations, communications is used synonymously with marketing. They are not the same thing. One is a subset of the other.
5. A black hole. Rarely does an investment in marketing disappear into the cosmic void. Marketing does, however, require a minimum investment of resources for it to yield the desired return.
6. Rocket science. There’s an art to marketing, but it is not an esoteric science. Brain surgery—yes. Rocket science—no.
7. Snake oil. Rightly done, marketing has no gimmicks, fakery or fraud. Neither is it a panacea that cures all.
8. Hocus pocus. Marketing is not “putting a spell” on people to manipulate them into doing something against their will.
9. Quick fix. The law of the harvest tells us that you’ve got to plant the seed and nurture the crop before you can expect to reap a bountiful harvest.
10. Cotton candy. Although cotton candy is colorful, sweet and attractive, it lacks substance and nutritive value. Effective marketing is both attractive and substantive.

Marketing is sometimes hampered by unrealistic expectations so occasionally it’s helpful to look at what marketing is not.

Stressed to no end these last few weeks, I’ve been holding on to anything and everything I can to help keep me sane. I keep thinking about how my life will be so much easier, less hectic, a little more mine when I move out. But then I’ll have all new stresses, but those stresses I can deal with. They are nothing new to me. Moving and bills, no worries there.

I wish I could fly somewhere far away, go on an endless vacation where no one can find me until I want them to. I want to be able to be emotionally sound for more than 5 minutes at a time. I guess that’s my fault for caring so much about so many things and so many people, but I can’t really let go of that. For now, I’ll just hold on to my happy thoughts and pixie dust and hopefully I’ll get to the point where I don’t need them anymore. Hopefully.

So, I guess there’s been some buzz about this so-called “Disney Gallery” being relocated to the Bank of Main Street. Apparently the controversy is that this gallery was originally built brick-by-brick by Walt Disney himself overlooking New Orleans Square.  But because of the mindless suits who now control the park, the gallery was snatched from the loyal fan community to create a corporate giveaway scheme nicknamed the “Disneyland Dreams Suite.”  A better name would be the “Destroying a Piece of History Suite.”

This thoughtlessness left pin traders and the like no place to buy overpriced merchandise/gather history for their blog and/or podcast for well over a year.  Until the same mindless suits reincarnated the gallery in its new location on Main Street, causing the same loyal fan community to complain once again about the decline of original merchandise locations on this Marceline, Missouri-inspired street and that the revival of the Disney Gallery simply lacks the same pixie dust of the old location.

Andy Castro wrote that the Gallery’s neighbor, the Opera House, has “photos of the Disneyland Dream Suite, which evicted the original Disney Gallery. It probably isn’t meant to be a slap in the face, but with the smaller Disney Gallery now open next door, and the Disneyland Dream Suite off-limits to park guests, it does sting a little” [via MiceChat].  It was obviously an intentional ploy by the aforementioned mindless suits to remind the loyal fan community what a tragedy was committed.  It looks like Disneyland has become a place where dreams are killed.  And its sad that Walt Disney’s original Magic Kingdom has been degraded to that.

The kids and I had a blast this morning making and playing with playdough.  I got the recipe from my sister, Christy.  Sailor wanted orange and Laszlo wanted green.  We had enough cream of tartar so we went for it.  After awhile of playing with the sweet smelling gooey stuff I began to put it away, but not before Laszlo noticed the left over flour on the table needed for making it. He asked that I not clean it up so he could pretend his pirates were stuck on an island covered in snow!  Love it!  This however soon turned into fast flying flour as Laszlo had the idea to help Sailor fly.  Everyone got a generous sprinkling of “pixie dust” and we were off!  Hahaha

It’s totally awesome that my first foray into Orly nail polish is its upcoming Once Upon a Time fall 2009 collection.

At first look, I loved every color in this collection, from juicy Poison Apple orange-red to milk chocolate Prince Charming. It is one of the rare times I have ever looked at a nail polish collection and said, I have to have them ALL.

When you look at the bottles all together (and the names, the colors and the promo photos) you may see that this collection is not about the frou-frou fairytale, but about the sometimes dark side of these children’s tales. That’s kinda how I’ve interpreted it, and I think it’s awesome.  I mean, really. Giving Snow White a poisonous apple was a totally evil, dark thing to do!

I’m excited that I’m able to preview some of these colors for you! The collection will be available in September.

Prince Charming is “brownish grey creme” according to Orly. It’s a perfect fall color. The chocolatey creaminess makes me think of trick-or-treating on a crisp October evening. Prince Charming is delicious!

Pixie Dust is an “icy blue shimmer.” I see a fairy or the long swirling robes of an ice queen when I look at my nails wrapped in this color!

Happily Ever After

Happily Ever After is “magenta shimmer,” and is probably the only bottle in the collection that disappoints me a bit. It reminds me of OPI’s Overexposed in South Beach (from this summer’s South Beach collection). Therefore, it kinda makes me think of summer. I tried to capture the pinky shimmer in this but my camera did not want to cooperate! It’s still a pretty color though.

Poison Apple is a “burnt red creme.” It’s got bite! It doesn’t remind me so much of the apple as it does the red accents on Snow White’s gown and her red lipstick. I absolutely love this!

The two colors that I’m most stoked about I didn’t get to review – Enchanted Forest (“dark green creme”) and Mirror Mirror (“grey creme”). But I believe most of the bloggers on the right hand side of my homepage have, so check their swatches out if you are interested (Scrangie has pics of the six-pack and Steph’s Closet has pics of Enchanted Forest and Mirror Mirror as well as the colors I showed here) ! Enchanted Forest is definitely a buzz color for fall! When I get it I’ll post a swatch. 

The application of all these was easy, and most of the pics are two coats except Pixie Dust . I applied two coats with a heavy hand. I’m not wearing top coat and they all shine great. Next time I wear Pixie Dust I’ll probably do three coats.

Orly Nail Lacquers are free of DBP and all traces of toluene and formaldehyde. The six shades in the Once Upon a Time collection will retail for $7.50 each. The collection is available at Victoria Nail Supply, and I’ve seen Prince Charming in Sally Beauty already, tucked in their regular line with a band around the bottle that says “New.” I am sure Ulta will carry the collection as well since they have carried all the other collections. A family of pixies has moved into my garden. It’s true, but perhaps not quite what you might be thinking.

Last time I talked about two miniature forms of the Dwarf Alberta Spruce. I gave a brief explanation of the horticultural terms, Sport, Reversion and Witches’ Broom, all referring to mutations – new or different growth forms –  emerging from their respective parent plants. This time I’ll present for you the family tree of an exciting group of dwarf and miniature conifers originating from the White Spruce (Picea glauca).

We learned last time that Picea glauca ‘Conica’ was discovered near the beginning of the 20th century in Alberta, Canada. This new form of Picea glauca is a dwarf version of the White Spruce with a greatly reduced growth rate and nice conical shape. Many new cultivars have been discovered as mutated growth emanating from a small percentage of the millions and millions of Dwarf Alberta Spruce clones growing around the world.

One of those mutations was propagated and named ‘Pixie’ for its miniature growth rate and tiny conical habit. One day at Iseli Nursery, an employee discovered that one, in a crop of ‘Pixie,’ had a variegated sport. In fact, by the time the employee made this discovery, the sport had become virtually the entire small plant. This mutation was evaluated for a number of years, found to hold true to its distinctive characteristic and became the “mother” plant for a new cultivar which became known as, ‘Pixie Dust.’

‘Pixie Dust’ is even a little slower growing than ‘Pixie’ with the same nice miniature conical habit. What makes it particularly exciting is that mid-way through the growing season, it appears to be sprinkled with golden pixie dust with its golden colored second push of new foliage. Since not all the buds push at the same time, and since the golden color fades to rich green, ‘Pixie Dust’ makes me think of gold dust shimmering in the sunlight (in very slow motion).

But the story doesn’t end there. A sport was discovered growing on a ‘Pixie Dust’ with faster growth but still within the dwarf growth range. This new sport has been propagated and is being evaluated at Iseli Nursery today. So far it is growing into a larger conically shaped plant with annual growth of 3 to 4 inches. Currently it is pushing its second flush and shows the same golden color as its parent.

So, we begin with a large forest tree that produces a dwarf cone shaped, highly popular cultivar, which itself produces a great many new cultivars through the magic of mutation. One of those mutations produces its own new cultivar, which at this time has also produced an exciting new form worthy of further evaluation.

Did you follow all that? Don’t worry, just enjoy the fantastic new conifers being introduced at your local fine garden centers and leave all the complicated science to the experts!

The last day certainly did not start well .   Thankfully some Pixie Dust must have been thrown our way and it all turned out just fine.  The Manager at Saratoga Springs Resort that gave us the extra time in the room was great (even though we didn’t end up needing it).  DH was really sure that the prices at the Car Care Center would be ridiculous, but it was under $160 for everything. He said he couldn’t have done much better at home.

Funny story about the “missing” golf clubs, the morning we checked out I checked my email before packing up my laptop and saw that I had a voicmail at home from a (407) number –but I never remember how to check my home voicemail.  When we got home, it was from the pro-shop at Osprey Ridge telling us that they couldn’t send our clubs to the pro-shop at LBV so they sent them to bell services at Saratoga Springs Resort.   2 lessons learned: If our first & last name had been on the bag tags, they probably would’ve been easier to locate & always use your cell phone # as the contact #, so they can get ahold of you while you’re on vacation.

We had a good trip home. Everyone was getting hungry shortly after leaving so we stopped at a restaurant that I used to go to with my grandparents. We went to Toojays in Lake Mary (there are quite a few locations around Orlando) Really good deli! We ate till we were stuffed and then got back on the road for the trip home. We stopped a few times to stretch and were home around 9:30pm.

All in all it was a very good trip. DD finished the first round of antibiotics and did need to stay on them for another 5-6 days, but she finally recovered and is busy planning our December trip.

This guy thinks so. I do too, as do many of my clients. You can’t pump trillions of dollars into non-productive areas, pull cash from productive areas of the economy and expect good things to happen. Unless you are a Democrat, in which case, you also think that propeller beanies will supply our electrical needs, expanding free health care to everyone will save us from bankruptcy and that the Tooth Fairy will arrive tomorrow. I do hope you’re right.

We’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto!

 Our story begins on Saturday at a flea market in Waterford Township, Michigan where Tinker Bell, the chihuahua, was with her owner Dorothy, when a storm blew through.  A 70 mph gust of wind picked up the little chihuahua and tossed her out of sight.  On Monday, when Tinker Bell had not returned home, her owner contacted a local psychic who guided them to an area about a mile from the flea market.  Sure enough, there was Tinker Bell waiting for Dorothy.  Tinker Bell,  Dorothy and the psychic all lived happily ever after!  More here…

The darkness of night begins to fade, replaced by brilliant hues of red, purple, orange. A breeze drifts by carrying the scent of wildflowers . The air begins to swirl and thicken and from it emerges a figure. She appears to be a maiden! no a fairy ! no a maiden ! It is hard to tell for she seems to take both forms! The figure moves and all around her the land starts to quicken, new buds blooming as she passes, new animals being born. Who is she? What is her purpose?

Eostre or Ostara is the Goddess of dawn, spring , and rebirth. As Eostre, she is the playful mischievous fairy reveling in the joy of spring. As Ostara, she appears as a maiden bearing a basket of colorful eggs and she and her magic companion a white rabbit would breathe life back into the earth after winter.

I decided to reflect both aspects of this Goddess in this two part gown set .There are gowns suitable for maidens as well as fairies. I’ve always known that Rush Limbaugh was a douche and an idiot but this list really seals the deal.  The quotes would be hysterical if he didn’t have 13.5 million listeners.  How can people listen to this crap?  He literally makes my blood boil.  Did I mention that he flunked out of college?  Probably explains a LOT about the following list of *brilliant* quotes.  He’s not even “truthy”.  He takes the truth, throws it away, and then starts building his own bullshit pile based on pixie dust and fairy farts.  He’s about as far from being an American hero as a person can get.

Alrighty. So, here’s a little update about where I’ve been in the past few days.  Since I work for EPCOT, they have all of the CM’s working there do discovery day, where you learn about the history of the park, and then we walked the park to find out fun little facts about the park.  For example, if you are standing in a certain location in EPCOT, you’ll look across the Lagoon and you’ll see France with the Eiffel Tower.  However, you’ll notice that the Swan and Dolphin resort is rising up and breaking the fantasy of World Showcase.  Now, if you look over to Morocco, you’ll see the pavilion with a tall tower in the back; this tall tower is The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.  This time, the Imagineers got smart.  The knew that Tower of Terror would be seen, so they designed the building of Tower of Terror so that it blends into the background of Morocco.  Just a little neat thing I learned.  Also, they did something magical for all of the new CM’s.  But, I swore by Mickey that I can’t tell anyone, not even family or friends or anyone.  So I won’t tell you, but let me just say that if you’re lucky enough to be there when new CM’s are taking a tour of the park, then you’ll see it and be all moved.  After that, we went back into the classroom and talked some more about the whole Disney Basics (they are the basic principles that make CM’s so special) and diversity and all that jazz.  Then, our Coordinators of Training came in and took us away to get our costumes and then start the computer training.  My costume isn’t too bad actually.  I’ll take a picture of it and put it up here.  But anyways, I did computer training on hazard communication (boring) and how to treat Guests.  Then my day ended, and I went and hung out in the parks with my roommates.

Then, yesterday, I went into EPCOT to start learning how to work in Innoventions.  It’s awesome, and there are a lot of really cool venues to be at.  There’s a new venue coming that I can’t tell you, but it’s gonna be awesome.  But Innoventions is really ever-changing.  I’m excited to work there since that’s where the CM’s interact most with the guests, because Innoventions is more than any other attraction, which is pretty cool.  I’m gonna be a host, which means I don’t talk in a microphone, but I still interact with the guests. It’s pretty fun.  But the best part is that I’m closing down Innoventions, which means that I’ll be working Illuminations.  Yeah, I’ll be seeing that every single night.  What a way to end my day.

I love being a Cast Member.  Knowing that working for Disney has a higher standard than the other places makes it that much more magical.  I actually did many magical moments today (March 3oth) and yesterday (March 29th) that made me smile that much more. When I was getting ready for Illuminations, I saw a family with younger kids, and I learned to teach kids how to do a high-four, since Mickey only has four fingers and can’t really do a high-five.  So to not make him jealous, you should do a high-four.  Well, after teaching one kid how to do a high-four, I had a book of Mickey stickers in my pocket, and I said that, since he knows how to do a high-four, he gets a sticker.  Well, his eyes just lit up and a big smile grew on his face.  Soon the other kids who were too afraid of me at first suddenly wanted to practice their high-fours, just to get a sticker.  Then, before Illuminations started, we picked out a kid to help start off Illuminations.  What he had this kid do was he would, on cue, blow out the torches that were lit up at the start of Illuminations.  Well, we counted down, and he blew out the torches just as the narrator blew them out. Well, his eyes grew as big as saucers.  Then today, I saw a girl who had a “It’s my birthday!” button on.  I went up to her and told her happy birthday and asked how old she was.  She told me she was three, and I gave her a little Mickey sticker.  It’s funny how just these little Mickey stickers makes the child so much more happier.  I also noticed she had a Tinkerbell shirt on and I asked her if she liked Tinkerbell, which she said yes.  I told her a little story: The shimmering lights on the ground outside of Innoventions is from Tinkerbell.  She was so excited when the park opened that she flew over too soon, and her pixie dust fell on the wet cement and stuck there.  But it always shimmers, and if you look real closely, you can see it, even in the daytime.  And if you stick your thumb over the pixie dust, it’ll shine right through your thumb.  You just had to see her face to feel the way I did.  People say that the Cast Members are the ones who make the park, and I never believed it until I became one.  Now, I understand.  I love it.
