E funciona!

I have made it to Korea, after 14 hours of being in flight, 5 of which I spent asleep, 2 of which I

I have made it to Korea, after 14 hours of being in flight, 5 of which I spent asleep, 2 of which I spent eating (bibimbap at 1 am, half a ham & cheese sandwich 5 or 6 hours later, then pancakes for breakfast at approximately 4 am local Korea time), 6 of which I spent watching movies (Julie & Julia – cute, 500 Days of Summer – very cute, Taking of Pelham 123 – ok but not as good as I hoped), and the remaining 1 hour I spent wide awake eager to land already.

Seoul/Incheon airport is huge, modern and representative of the proud quality that is embedded in Korean culture.

The highway reminded me of home. Funny how a road feels familiar. The only things that reinforced the unknown in my new home were mountains in the distance, the never-ending curves in the road, and distinguishably-funky-but-can’t-tell-from-what smells. My first impression of Korea? Korea stinks. Literally.

There are random smells of sewage, kimchee, gasoline, sulphur, and once I got a whiff of potatoes. You never know what your nose will come across while driving through the Korean country.

After a few hours of rest, I ventured into neighboring towns of Pyeongtaek (where I am living). Songtan (spelling?) is about 20-25 minutes away by car. A mini-NYC, it is filled with neon lights, big Korean signs, restaurants with more pungent smells, shops with music blasting onto the street, and a lot of young Koreans walking around eating seaweed-wrapped rice balls they bought from street vendors.

Michelle and I ate dinner at a Pizza Hut because both a Japanese restaurant and Canadien-style pub were packed. We will never eat at a Pizza Hut in Korea again.

First of all, the place was a mess. The service was a mess and the food was a mess. The waitresses scuttled around, frantic. They would have been fired if they were working in the U.S.

There were people huddled at the salad bar and I figured they must have good stuff, so we ordered the salad bar for 2, too. We only got 1 plate. When we asked for another plate, we were told (through universal hand motion language) that we share 1 plate and can go back and forth for more food. And boy, were the choices enticing! Corn flakes, whole baby bananas, jello mold squares, pickles, yogurt, iceberg lettuce, green salad dressing (we guessed it was kiwi dressing), sunflower seeds, smashed yellow who-the-hell-knows-what-that-is, and jalapeno peppers were our salad options. We piled our sad little salad onto our teeny salad plate.

Our margherita pizza topped off the whole experience. Instead of basil, there was lettuce arranged onto the center of the pizza, in beautiful formation, but IT WAS LETTUCE.

So, I learned a few lessons in my first day. Wear perfume to fight off bad smells. Don’t expect to get what you ordered at an American knock-off restaurant.

Don’t expect what you would expect in the U.S., period, because this is Korea, my friend.

This weekend marked the five-month anniversary of being in Europe. It is hard to believe that it h

This weekend marked the five-month anniversary of being in Europe. It is hard to believe that it has been five months! I have been learning a lot and have been really busy getting ready for the New Man weekend that takes place at the North American College during the weekend following Thanksgiving Day. It will not be anywhere close to enjoying Thanksgiving Day with my family, but I guess I will try to enjoy it here. I am thankful that I will at least be able to video chat with my family on Thanksgiving Day.

Before I continue with the travel weekend, I want to describe the Italian healthcare system. I needed to get a vaccination for H1N1 Influenza (Swine Flu) because I have asthma and I always have problems with my lungs when I am ill. So, my physician from Oklahoma wrote a letter attesting to this fact and one of the Sisters of Mercy, that run our infirmary, helped me make an appointment to see a doctor close to the college. When I walked into the office I realized that the staff only spoke Italian and German. I was able to talk with the receptionist with little difficulty, but I wanted to make it clear that I was only there to get the H1N1 vaccine. To make a long story short, the doctor spoke English and gave me a full checkup. He then explained that the only way to get a vaccine in Italy is to go through the National Healthcare System. There are vaccination centers and also those same vaccines with doctors that are affiliated with the National system. He was not. Therefore, I had to pay 30 euro for a doctor’s appointment, only to get a prescription for H1N1 vaccine and then have to search for a vaccination clinic in the city. (If you are in Italy and are looking for one of these clinics here is a helpful website http://www.ecodiroma.org/-vaccinazioni-a-roma.htm). Fortunately, there is a clinic located near Castle Sant’ Angelo that I went to. I gave them to the prescription, filled out some paperwork (all in Italian), and received the shot without any problem and for free.

This last weekend was a travel weekend here at the North American College. After my morning classes at the Gregorian University, I walked back to the college for lunch, went to my doctor’s appointment (see above), and then met three of my seminarian friends at the Saint Peter Train Station. The station is located very near to the North American College, but the only way to get to it is by walking all the way to St. Peter’s Basilica and then walking to the station. Still, it is not a long walk.

We decided to visit Romania for the weekend because the US Dollar was not as weak there, but I was shocked by how much I liked the town of Cluj, Romania. We took a two-hour flight via a cheap airline, W!zz Air, and flew into the town of Cluj. (W!ZZ Air is a great airline with new planes and a kind crew). The airport was very small and the weather was very cold. It was after 11pm when we arrived and we quickly took a taxi to our hotel in the historic center of the town. We stayed at the Hotel Melody and spent the evening exploring the town. Everything about the town was great! There were very large pedestrian walkways with trees and water fountains. There were also monuments and pieces of art scattered throughout the area. We also found the huge Basilica of Saint Michael, which was located next to our hotel. There were also Catholic and Orthodox churches scattered everywhere.

My favorite part of the trip was the weather. While it was very cold, it was also foggy and misty the entire time. It really felt like I was in a different country. We went to the Iulius Mall on Saturday, which was located a few kilometers away from the historic center. Walking up to the mall reminded me of malls in the US. Our first order of business when we reached the mall was to visit Starbucks! I had a good hot chocolate and then called my family with their wifi connection. We then wondered through the mall, ate lunch at Pizza Hut, and then went to see a movie in English with Romanian subtitles. It felt like being in the United States, but not. It was a nice trip and cost me less than $200 for everything (plane, hotel, transportation, food). Romania will be switching to the Euro in a couple years, so the prices will go up. I am glad I had a chance to go there now and I will try to go back before they switch to the Euro.

Himalayan Times er traditionen tro mere konstaterende under deres overskrift: Pizza Hut and KFC foray into Nepal mens Nepalnews.com er decideret kedelig.

McDonald’s has applied to the Intellectual Property Office to register its popular slang name, ‘Maccy D’s’, as a trademark. The term has been used widely in the UK for many years when referring to the fast-food chain, but has not previously been officially adopted by McDonald’s itself. Other fast-food restaurant chains have also sought to promote abbreviated versions of their brand names, such as ‘KFC’ for Kentucky Fried Chicken and ‘BK’ for Burger King.

Earlier this year, Pizza Hut tried to promote truncated name ‘The Hut’ in its advertising campaigns. This is not the first time McDonald’s has used slang to promote its restaurants. In 2003, the chain unveiled its ‘I’m lovin’ it!’ strapline, which was designed to take the brand in a fresh direction. At the time, McDonald’s said that the phrase would be the strategic ‘glue’ for upcoming global marketing and ad campaigns, which it wanted to be ‘relevant, hip and energetic’. US pop singer Justin Timberlake was drafted in to promote the tag. Last month, the fast-food chain celebrated the 35th anniversary of its arrival in the UK with a nostalgic campaign that focused on some of its best-known menu items. The push, which uses the strapline ‘There’s a McDonald’s for everyone’, shows the range of people who visit the restaurants.

OH MY!

Storm number 5 for the week rolled in this evening, and made itself known. Not only was there thunder and lightning, but our backyard looked like this.

Although I wished it was snow, it was only hail. Large, pelting hail. So much that we had accumulation, on the street even.

But before all this weather drama, I had made myself a matcha green tea latte while enjoying some figure skating in HD.

Not as pretty as Starbucks, but tasted just as good.

After all the poetry on ice was done, I made my way to the gym to get my sweat on via the stairclimber and stationary bike. I made it home just as the storm was starting – perfect timing!

Alas, we ended up sending my dad back out in the mess to get dinner. It’s Friday, take out is to be expected.

Can you guess what we had?

Hello delicious Pizza Hut pizza. My choice was the Veggie Mediterranean – roasted red pepper, babay spinach, feta cheese, red onions, tomatoes, black olives, and mozzarella. But I nixed the olives, and had them replaced with mushrooms. Much better!

And since I obviously hadn’t consumed enough refined white flour today, I grabbed a couple of those damn tasty cheesy bread sticks.

Go big or go home, right?

As much as Pizza Hut wouldn’t be my pizza joint of choice, they do make a pretty decent veggie pizza. Not too skimpy on the toppings (although, if I made it myself, I’d totally add more).

Sienna was all attitude when she found out pizza was for dinner – not really a food that shares well with kitties.

Who am I kidding – she’s all attitude all the time

There was hockey to be watched this evening (Canucks win, 5- 2), and hot chocolate to be consumed, with marshmallows again

One would think that, at 12:10 am, it would be bed time. But no…there is more figure skating on TV. Seriously CBC Sports, why do you do this to me? I *could* PVR it and watch it tomorrow, but I want to see it now! Looks like I’ll be camping out on the couch for the next hour or so. Night!

Haaaiii all!

Oke, jadi ceritanya begini, habis pulang shalat Jumat, saya dibawakan ibu 4 loyang pizza + 1 loyang kecil buat Pak Iwan. Lalu gua tutup bentaran. Lalu, Udin dateng. Karena temen sekelas, ku persilahkan ambil pizzanya. Terus, gue makan sama temen-temen gue. Lalu kujelaskan mengapa belum boleh ngambil pizzanya dulu. Tapi mereka maksa, malah ngancem masukin gua lagi ke kolam. Suck ‘em. Lalu, ku lihat pada dateng anak 7A mulai makan pizza. 1 orang 1 potong.

Cutie Pie and I ran a bunch of errands after we dropped off Wildman at preschool yesterday morning.

Cutie Pie and I ran a bunch of errands after we dropped off Wildman at preschool yesterday morning. As a special treat I swung by a local park on the way home. The weather was gorgeous but slightly too warm for my taste. The incredible heat we’ve been experiencing needs to go!

Cutie Pie ran right over to the canal that borders the park.

And began throwing leaves and mulch into the water.

This is a favorite past time for him. It makes me nervous. Even though he can swim I’d still be terribly freaked out if he fell into the canal. I can only imagine how traumatized Cutie Pie would be if he fell into the water unexpectedly.

We checked out this lizard sunning himself next to me on the bench.

After several minutes of leaf/mulch throwing and lizard investigation I suggested we head over to the play ground equipment. He happily agreed. I just love the huge grass field at this park. It makes me want to run too!

There were a bunch of other kids playing on the playground so Cutie Pie, being the slow-to-warm child that he is, was reluctant to play. Eventually he did manage to climb up one structure that was far away from the other children and slide down the slide. That was about it.

He much preferred sitting next to me on the bench and using my camera. Silly kid!

Later that evening, we headed back out for more park fun. This time Wildman got to go and we went to a different park. The park we went to was on the beach and we stayed until sundown. The boys had a blast playing with all of their friends.

Afterward, we headed over to Pizza Hut with Steph and her two boys for dinner. We sat in a corner where the four boys got their own booth and Steph and I got our own booth. It worked out wonderfully as long as I kept the carrot sticks and ranch coming!

Kurzum: man gibt 110 %.

In diesem Sinne: guten Hunger!

This is a re-post from my old MySpace blog. I used to have a ton of this W(aL)D crap. Apparently a few of you find it as amusing as I do. There are some that have been lost to the ages, but there are some good ones left here…

So, I remembered that my e-mails to & from world.and.lunar.domination@gmail.com used to actually be about World (and Lunar) Domination. Sadly, a lot of the original stuff is lost due to a PittsburghBeat.com crash. Maybe Rippa can get me a backup from somewhere if one still exists, and I can sort through all the shit to find the meat of the posts.

This here has to be the WORST song I’ve ever heard. Featuring none other than America’s favorite moochin ass sibling and now International VH1 Playboy Ray J.

A few of the DOPE lyrics (LOL)

I’m a motherfucking baller, with a cherry red tux
And now that a nigga’s rich, all the bitches wanna fuck

She told me at 3 o’clock to meet her at pizza hut

And she was real freaky, told me do it in her butt

So I did it in her butt, butt
Right at the back of Pizza hut, hut

As humans, we’ve come to know a lot of brand names, no matter how long one has existed on the

As humans, we’ve come to know a lot of brand names, no matter how long one has existed on the Earth. McDonald’s, Starbucks, Hewlett-Packard — “big name” companies that stick in our minds.

But why do some companies change their names? Well, occasionally they don’t have a choice – they are absorbed into other companies. Think TechTV and Cingular. There was a time when they were acknowledged by their buyers, but soon they faded away from common usage. It is sad, yes, but it shows the economic progression of these companies. I’m not using progression in a positive light for both examples, however, as I despise the G4 Network, but that’s a story for another time.

Anyway, sometimes companies change their names to make a bigger impression on the public. Recently, there have been two companies that are making a big push for this: Pizza Hut and Radioshack. Pizza Hut, as they now offer quite a bit more than just simple pizza, wants to simply be known as “The Hut”. Hmm. Yes, I suppose a hut reminds me of an establishment that is large scale, and serves a variety of bread-based foods. Sure. Also, Radioshack wants to be just “The Shack”. Now, they haven’t changed their logo at all for this, but they’ve referenced just “THE SHACK” in odd colorations in recent commercials. This is probably due to the sharp decline in the use of radio technology. Then again, a shack reminds me of a loosely built, small storage area designed to hold odds and ends. So it makes perfect sense that a building like that should sell advanced computing equipment, right?

Part of the problem seems to be that these new names are rather vague. It takes away a little of what we could expect from the establishment. For instance, what if IHOP suddenly changed its name to just the “International House”? I’d be expecting an embassy of some sort. Or, even the (now defunct) Circuit City? The City could come off as an open social area with shady dealings in the background.

Yes, I’m picking on little things again, but really, these names are designed to appeal to the general public? I just think they’re trying to sound more expansive in the services they provide.

But, I can’t imagine someone saying, “Yeah, I’m gonna head over to the shack just as soon as I grab some lunch at the hut. Then I’m going to go back to the house in the city, to get some work done.”

Then again, give it a few years.
