All that aside, it is September, and that means it’s time to start rolling out some fall nail looks! It’s my favorite season, but unfortunately Singapore is seasonless, so I’ll just have to paint tiny argyle sweaters on my nails, since I definitely can’t wear them! (Though, oddly enough, there are “fall sales” and some shops are selling sweaters. Perhaps for trips abroad?)

Here’s three easy looks that are fun to do for an accent nail, or even on all 10. The plaids are a bit tricky on non-dominant hands, at least for me, but they look great if you just do one nail and paint the others in a coordinating shade.

The nail on the left is a sort of European heavy tweed, the middle is a old-fashioned corncob tweed, and then some plaid.

For the European tweed, the trick is a striping brush (long and thin). Paint the nail base in any color you like- I used nude, and then dip the length of the brush in nail polish or acrylic paint. I used acrylic paint.  Do a bunch of random vertical and horizontal lines and don’t be afraid to let the lines touch- that’s what gives the blended effect. You will need to seal it with a good topcoat like Poshe or Seche Vite.

The corncob tweed is the same process, just add little cross-hatched “x” shapes here and there to simulate texture. I added a French tip to give it a little refinement and added some little gold studs for extra jazz.

The plaid is just straight lines in various thicknesses. This is a bit more difficult than the other two since a fairly steady hand is required. A striping brush makes it a lot easier- just clean up any paint that may get on your cuticles and lay it down slowly on the nail. And if you go a bit crooked on any of the lines, add a little gold stud or a rhinestone to cover it up!

I added stripes in China Glaze Agro from the Hunger Games Collection on my ring finger and thumb. Then I added stripes of China Glaze Gaga for Green from the ElectroPop Collection. Next I added shamrocks on my middle finger in CG Gaga For Green. Gaga For Green in this design reminds me of that decorative gel icing used on cakes and such. Then I added stripes of China Glaze Fast Track on my ring finger and thumb. Next I added dots of CG Fast Track to my middle finger. Finished with some topcoat on all fingers.

Pretty quick and simple nail art for St. Patrick’s Day.

I decided to go with shades of purple to make it a little different and I added shimmer behind the heart but other than that it’s pretty much the same as hers.

I used OPI I Juggle Men all over the nail.

Did the tips with Essie St Lucia Lilac.

Stripes and hearts are OPI Siberian Nights.

White stripes are L.A. Colors Art Deco Nail Art Lacquer in white.

And the glitter stripe is Sinful Colors Queen of Beauty.

It was pretty quick and easy. I would love to recreate this for St. Paddy’s Day in green tones with little shamrocks!

This is a long way of saying I’m sorry for not posting more holiday goodies! But for today, here’s a nice festive nail art idea- Holly and Plaid.

For the plaid, you will need some striping nail art polishes- the type with a thin brush. If you don’t have any, you can just use a cheap thin paintbrush dipped in a bottle of polish to make the plaid. Clean it really well between colors so you don’t contaminate your polishes. But if you like nail art, it can be really useful to have a few striping polishes.  I used Color Club Art Club stripers and one random Japanese dollar store art polish.

If you’re not up for doing all your nails, just do a couple plaid ones for accents. You can use any colors for the plaid or base, but it looks best if the base is lighter and has fairly good contrast with your plaid colors.

The White Stripes are not my favorite Jack White project (more on that later) but they are still one of my favorite bands. Jack White is one of the most talented musicians of all time. I love my music to be stripped down and raw, so this combined with his supreme musicianship means that are naturally among my favorites. I am more a fan of the first three albums, but everything up until their split contains gems.

I am not going to elaborate too much about them as so much has already been said, and I am sure most people are already very familiar. I will include one of their covers as the selected songs as they do an especially amazing job with covers. I think they hold 3 of the top 5 slots in my list of favorite covers. From Tegan and Sara to Dolly Parton they improve upon the original while bringing that unique bluesy flair that usually means I will end up preferring their version. That is the case with this Bob Dylan from their self-titled:

I mentioned above that The White Stripes were only my second favorite Jack White project. The first is of course The Raconteurs. The addition of Brendan Benson, my favorite solo artist of all time, sets them above The Stripes in my mind. You still get Jack’s insane guitar skills, but have the bonus of Brendan’s pop sensibility, Little Jack’s pounding bass, and Patrick’s drums which are better than Meg any day. I have seen them live multiple times and every time I leave more impressed than the last. Their albums are always a perfect mix of brooding, mystery, throwback sounds, rootsy blues, and straight up power pop.

Coming up with a nail design for them was easy when contrasting the White Stripes. The color palette on all their albums is browns, and they all wear so much plaid that a tan plaid was the first thing that came to mind. Had I thought it out a little bit more thoroughly I would have used bronze instead of blue as an accent to bring in the awesome chandeliers they used on stage on their first tour (and Jack’s killer Gretsch), but I am still very happy with how this turned out.

Choosing a song was really hard, but I love dark, mysterious sounds and no song does that as well as Broken Boy Soldier, the title song of their first album. (Warning…video is creepy).

Maybe some day I will get around to covering The Dead Weather. They make really great nail inspiration! But until then, keeping looking for that Third Man Rolling Record Store and look into Brendan’s solo albums…I like them even more than anything Jack related.
