One of the cutest songs I’ve ever heard, the ukelele just makes it that much better. I found this a couple months ago but never got to posting it here. I can’t stop listening to this again! I looooove this! So freakin’ cute!

Whenever I interview a musician, I can hardly wait to get to my favorite part of the interview is asking an artist about the inspiration behind his or her songs. The inspiration for songs is as imaginative as can be—some stories are silly, some are lovely, others aren’t all that special—but they’re all interesting. This is why I love the latest Chicken Soup for the Soul Book: The Story Behind the Song.

I know, I know. I usually stay away from sloppy, emotional stuff, and Chicken Soup books can definitely fit that category, but this book is different. It offers a look into the minds of contemporary artists from a variety of genres, such as Jewel, Christina Aguilera, Kanye West, John Legend, Rick Springfield, Iggy Pop, Tom Higgenson of Plain White T’s, Ann Wilson of Heart, and many, many more!

For example, did you know that “Jessie’s Girl” was written about a cute girl in Rick Springfield’s stained glass class, the guy’s name wasn’t actually Jessie, and that it was the catalyst for his career? How about the fact there’s a real Delilah who inspired “Hey Delilah” by the Plain White T’s, but Tom Higgenson never actually dated her? I have learned all sorts of interesting facts about some of my favorite songs—“Livin’ On a Prayer” by Bon Jovi, “Operator” by Jim Croce (yes, I’m a dork!), “At Seventeen” by Janis Ian, “Bad Reputation” by Joan Jett, and “Right Here Waiting” by Richard Marx. And I finally know what “Sister Christian” (Night Ranger) is all about! That in and of itself is worth the price of the book.

The fine folks at Plan A Media and Soul Publishing have given Backseat Writer a FREE COPY to give away to one lucky reader! To win this amazing book, all you have to do is head to Twitter, tweet this comment, “I want to win STORY BEHIND THE SONG from @backseatwriter, how ‘bout you? http://bit.ly/W5mfk” and you’ll be entered to win. Winner will be notified via Twitter, so make sure you’re following Backseat Writer (@backseatwriter) on Twitter. The contest ends December 1 at 5 PM EST.

Also, on December 1, Backseat Writer will be posting an excerpt from Chicken Soup: The Story Behind the Song–how Jewel came to write the song “Hands.” You will definitely want to read that!

*In the interest of full disclosure, I want you, dear reader, to know that Plan A Media did provide me a review copy of this book. There, now the FTC should be happy!*

Zeker eens checken.

Wow, so I haven’t posted here in a long while. It’s been a hectic few months since I last posted.

Back in May, I presented my 199 research project on collaborative authorship at my first academic conference, the 2009 Westwind/Aleph Conference for Undergraduate Research & Writing. I stayed up the entire night before perfecting my speech and was assigned to moderate for the morning session. All the presenters in my session, “Texts and Contexts,” were seniors presenting their honors thesis papers. It was nerve-wrecking, scary, and exhilarating all at the same time. Hearing each presenter’s research and talking about my own, I felt like I had finally joined the kind of intellectual discourse that I had read about, envied, and desired. And I knew that this was the kind of community that I wanted to be a part of for the rest of my life. I ended up winning a Dean’s Prize for my presentation. Afterwards, exhausted, I collapsed on my bed and slept the next 16 hours away.

The next morning, I woke up feeling tired, sore, and feverish. My lymph nodes were swollen and my throat felt scratchy. It was eighth week of Spring quarter, I was taking a 22-unit course load, and somehow, I had the bad luck of developing mononucleosis. The good news was that I only had a fairly minor case; after two weeks of nothing but sleeping, eating, and dragging my butt to lecture when I could muster up the energy, I was well enough to finish out the quarter, turning in final papers and taking my finals. However, my energy level (and more importantly, my motivation for work) took awhile to get back to normal.

I had originally planned on studying hard for the GRE Literature in English test and working on my senior thesis over the summer. I also wanted to get a head-start on the graduate school applications that were due in December. My parents, however, recognized that I was burnt out so when I moved back home for the summer, they really pushed me to get my health back to par. Over the next two months, I went running, hiking, backpacking, and camping. We took a week-long trip to Alaska, conquered our first “fourteener” (14,000 ft above sea level) – White Mountain Peak, and backpacked Mt. Whitney. I also got to hike my first class II mountain, Mt. Dana in Yosemite. I spent a great deal of my summer in the wilderness, rediscovering my love for nature and adventure. While I love the cultural opportunities that LA provides, sometimes I miss the Henry David Thoreau part of me that looks for the poetry in Nature and delights in walks by “Walden pond.”

In September, I moved into the apartments right off-campus with my two roommates from last year and we’ve been having a lot of fun cooking and going on midnight grocery runs to Ralph’s. My boyfriend and his friends live next door so we do a lot of spontaneous potlucks where each person cooks one dish and we roll the boys’ dining table down the hall to our apartment so we can all eat together. (For example, last night’s barbeque chicken! Yum.)

In other news, I’ve resumed my ushering duties with UCLALive, went to a Snow Patrol/Plain White T’s concert at the Wiltern, and made a visit to the Clark Library with Sigma Tau Delta. Academically, I finally started Latin 1 this quarter (yay) and just took my GRE Lit yesterday morning! Now that I’m halfway through Fall quarter and in the middle of application season, I figured I’ve neglected my blog enough. I don’t usually talk about my personal life on this blog (that’s not what it’s for), but applying for graduate school, deciding that its right for you and showing an admissions committee that you belong at X university, is a deeply personal process. And I’ve been thinking it might be worthwhile to share this experience with you, dear reader.

So prepare to hear a lot more about statements of purpose and nervous anxieties, apartment life and secret nerdy dreams about meeting Slavoj Zizek. I also plan to post a GRE guide (general and literature) for those of you looking to take the test within the next year so check back soon!

One of those songs with sincere lyrics, soothing music and tunes that would keep lingering on your thoughts for hours after you’ve heard this play!!!

Hey there Delilah
What’s it like in New York City?
I’m a thousand miles away
But girl, tonight you look so pretty
Yes you do
Times Square can’t shine as bright as you
I swear it’s true

Hey there Delilah
Don’t you worry about the distance
I’m right there if you get lonely
Give this song another listen
Close your eyes
Listen to my voice, it’s my disguise
I’m by your side

Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
What you do to me

Hey there Delilah
I know times are getting hard
But just believe me, girl
Someday I’ll pay the bills with this guitar
We’ll have it good
We’ll have the life we knew we would
My word is good

Hey there Delilah
I’ve got so much left to say
If every simple song I wrote to you
Would take your breath away
I’d write it all
Even more in love with me you’d fall
We’d have it all

Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me

A thousand miles seems pretty far
But they’ve got planes and trains and cars
I’d walk to you if I had no other way
Our friends would all make fun of us
and we’ll just laugh along because we know
That none of them have felt this way
Delilah I can promise you
That by the time we get through
The world will never ever be the same
And you’re to blame

Hey there Delilah
You be good and don’t you miss me
Two more years and you’ll be done with school
And I’ll be making history like I do
You’ll know it’s all because of you
We can do whatever we want to
Hey there Delilah here’s to you
This one’s for you

Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
What you do to me.

Every single week I find a handful new pop songs that both excite and delight my ears. But for every new song I like, there’s unfortunately at least three that I don’t, and some of those stinkers become quite popular and really very annoying over time. Here’s my list of the forty worst offenders of the decade. So as not to drive myself too crazy, I restricted the list to songs that made the top 40 on Billboard’s Hot 100 (which is not the same as the airplay chart, but which is easier to find by lazily browsing Wikipedia.) I also limited the list to one song per artist, because really, is there any point in weighing the cons and cons of each 3 Doors Down hit? No.

So, without further ado, part 3B of the list. For readability I’m breaking this quarter of this list into two. The higher up we’re getting, the more we’re getting to the songs I really truly despise, and when talking about some of them it’s hard to keep the word count down.

15. Clay Aiken, Invisible (2003, #37)

You know what’s a great song? Celine Dion’s cover of I Drove All Night. No, really. Roy Orbison wrote it, which is a plus, but when he (and later Cyndi Lauper) sang it, you could tell in their performances that deep down they knew there was something creepy about driving all night and climbing through a loved one’s window and creeping into their bed without bothering to call first to check if it was okay. But with Celine’s unironic version, part of a Chrysler campaign, there’s no such awareness. And it’s really, really unsettling.

Clay Aiken’s Invisible, a song about wanting to be a fly on the wall watching someone while they slept, is similar in subject matter and just as creepy, though it’s not nearly as good. Aiken’s sad-sack lament has almost no tune, for one thing, and what melody it has vaguely resembles a more downtrodden version of the theme from Just The Ten Of Us.

And while America did vote Aiken was the second-best singer of 2002, the man’s first post-Idol single gave him nothing him to work with vocally. To make matters worse, the song’s subject matter made Aiken’s gayness (unacknowledged by him, though assumed by the world at large) seem creepy, adding to the stalkerish sense that this song was about a passive-aggressive and sexually-repressed psycho. But, you know, not in a good way.

14. Plain White T’s, Hey There Delilah (2005/2007, #1)

Dumpy band of lugs has their biggest hit with a syrupy acoustic ballad? It’s not the first time it’s happened, but it’s the first time it’s happened with a song as dumb as this one: “A thousand miles seems pretty far/But they’ve got planes and trains and cars?” Come on now, child. Are you even old enough to drive?

Determined to make this overly long song a hit, the band’s label put it on two consecutive albums; it was over two years old by the time it finally caught on, much to the chagrin of people with ears everywhere. (Also: It was almost three years old when it stupidly got nominated for a Song of the Year Grammy.) Lately, the group have been trying—and, sadly, succeeding—to recapture the hearts of sugar-starved tween girls with the equally moronic retread 1, 2, 3, 4.

13. Aerosmith, Jaded (2000, #7)

Not every Aerosmith song is terrible. Love In An Elevator is kind of funny, and Janie’s Got A Gun is actually pretty good if you’re in the mood for it. If you catch me on the right day I might even admit to liking Dream On. Plus, part of me is grateful to the band for the Crazy video; because even though that song is really boring, thirteen-year old me really appreciated the presence of Naked Dude Whose Clothes Got Stolen While Skinny-Dipping With Alicia Silverstone And Liv Tyler.

However, some Aerosmith songs are unforgivably terrible. I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing is one. Also there’s Pink, their other grody hit from the late nineties. And Dude Looks Like A Lady is really stupid, too. But is any other Aerosmmith song as bad as Jaded? I’m not sure. Because while the dictionary says that jade can be used as a transitive verb, I have never once in my life heard that usage outside of this song. And the way Steven Tyler sings it, I’m pretty sure he thinks he’s being very witty and clever. When really he’ sounds like an old creep and I just want to punch him for being a smarmy dickhead.

This was, thankfully, their final appearance on the Top 40.

12. DJ Sammy & Yanou featuring Do, Heaven (2002, #8)
Spend enough time in gay bars, or better yet gay strip clubs, and you’ll realize that any song—literally, any song—can and will be turned into a crappy club track with some anonymous lady singer. So while I can’t particularly blame this cover of Bryan Adams’ crappy ode to love despite vaguely articulated odds, I can express my continued dismay that this tedious song somehow made the rare leap across to pop radio.

Also, did it really require three people to make this song? OK, so presumably DJ Sammy had to actually turn his equipment on before pushed the Generic Club Song button, and presumably he’s the one responsible for hiring a woman named Do to sing generically and clubbily over it. But what does that leave Yanou to do?

Oh well. At least it wasn’t this song, I guess.

11. Creed, With Arms Wide Open (2000, #1)
Creed had twelve mainstream rock hits between 1999 and 2004, eleven of which were also modern rock hits, because at some point modern rock decided to stop being different from mainstream rock. Scott Stapp and his then-cronies also had four entries on the Top 40, all of which are identically bad, though of those four this was the lone number one.

By the way, in the year 2000, if you came back from the future and told me that these Floridian Jesus monsters would be responsible for only the eleventh worst pop hit of the decade, I think I probably would have just killed myself.

September 12, 2009 :: The Killers w/Jack’s Mannequin .shoreline amphitheatre. September 13, 20

September 12, 2009 :: The Killers w/Jack’s Mannequin .shoreline amphitheatre.

September 13, 2009 :: Blink 182 w/Weezer .shoreline amphitheatre.
It rained endlessly at the Blink concert. The occasion of Wet Pants Day Part 2. I suppose we were lucky in that it was a steady light rain rather than a heavy downpour. Nonetheless, not so ideal for an outdoor venue. It was awesome seeing Blink again. Weezer was highly enjoyable as well.

September 19, 2009 :: 104.9 The Big Show w/All-American Rejects, Jack’s Mannequin .sjsu event center arena.
I was so excited to see AAR again. Amy and I found seats in the front row of the bleachers, pretty close to the stage. It was a nice place to stand because it gave me extra height, allowing me a decent view of the stage, and also it was less crowded.

September 27, 2009 :: Alice 97.3 Now and Zen w/Train, Colbie Caillat, Howie Day, Dashboard Confessional .sharon meadow|golden gate park.

October 17, 2009 :: Snow Patrol w/Plain White T’s .fox theatre.
I really enjoyed this concert, though not so much Snow Patrol’s encore (3 songs from their latest album that go together somehow. It was abstract. I don’t do abstract). Both bands performed well. I love Run and Chasing Cars =D. Poor Horace missed the concert because he was very sick. Amy took his place and we discussed if we were soulmates or not. She obviously laughed off the idea, but it was an amusing conversation. Barbara came as well, making it a girl’s night out.

October 23, 2009 :: Boys Like Girls w/Cobra Starship, The Maine, A Rocket to the Moon, Versa Emerge .the warfield.
Boys Like Girls was alright. Overall, the concert was ok. Nothing spectacular. Tons of little teenagers though.

I have attended a LOT of concerts this year and I already have two for next year – Taylor Swift in April and U2 in June. My oh my.

Recession is a band I’ve been following for a few years now. Most of the members go or have go

Recession is a band I’ve been following for a few years now. Most of the members go or have gone to my college, so I was introduced to them just by simple proximity. The music was good so I started popping down for their shows around Pittsburgh, even got a chance to play with them in a couple fundraiser’s and coffee houses on campus.

Since then I’ve kept up with the band and their sound has really grown into something excellent. It’s original and very rich musically while still being accessible. I’m listening to a demo CD of some of the tracks they’ve newly recorded right now and it’s great, just great. You can hear a few of them on there myspace here:

http://www.myspace.com/recession

I especially love that “Lose Your Head” is finally among the songs available online. It’s one of their older songs now, but it’s always been a favorite of mine at their shows. And the next online track, “Contagious” well… let’s just say you’ll be hitting repeat the second it’s done.

Anyway, I had meant to write a review of the band for an older site that’s no longer really living. Shamefully, it never went up, and now seems like a great time to remedy that, because there’s every indication that the band will be making some major moves soon.

Guitarist Brian Schultz told me recently that they had sent off a few tracks to LA to be mixed and promoted by Bernd Bergdorf, who’s worked with Green Day, Pink, Spearhead, Tom Waits, The Bangles, and even my personal hero’s the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

The name’s they’ve been sharing stage with have gotten increasingly impressive as of late as well. Among the one’s that have stood out to me are Love Drug, Mae, Plain White Ts, and Augustana. (I was lucky enough to make the night with Augustana. That was a hell of a show.)

Also, at the very moment I write this, several major labels are browsing through recessions online catalog and presence. This is a band with a great sound that’s really starting to catch some attention… I can’t help but anticipate big things in the near future. Keep an eye out for these guys.

(Oh, and while you’re on their myspace, feel free to post and tell them that they ought to get a recording of “Meant To Shine” up already. That song kicks.)

The following conversation took place between a friend and I.

It’s about this girl that has been crushing on me since February 14. This post is really high school and some might find this… Obnoxious. Marginally.

I: This is getting fucking repulsive. She picks the last seat in the Organization Committee just because she thinks I’m fucking there, and then she drops out because she finds out that I couldn’t join because (Drumroll) She took the last seat. Night school, she’s right next to me everywhere I go. Fuck!

Cue passerby pensioners praying for my salvation from eternal damnation.

Friend: (Chuckles)

I: She’s like a fucking tumour! Everywhere I go, it’s on me!

Friend: I think you should like her.

I: (This is me facepalming myself epically) Why?

Friend: I don’t know. Because she likes you.

I: She’s been crushing on me for about a year. I’ve shown no interest. She’s a fucking persistent little bugger. It’s not like math. You can’t just keep hitting at a problem until you get the solution. You hit, and you walk away, and you see what happens.

Friend: But why did you change your seat away from her? She’s going to be heartbroken man!

I: @##?. That’s the whole point.

Friend: (Thoughtfully remembers that I can be quite a dick.)

I: I’m not being heartless. I swear I’m not. If it’s been going on for a year, there’s something to it. I’m just a fucking distraction from her life, just another ‘thing’ to keep her occupied. I’m her fucking hobby. If I’ve broken her heart today, then she’s going to go home and cry the shit out of her eyes.

She’s going to fucking hate me because I remind her of her inadequacy. I was another mantlepiece on the shelf that she couldn’t reach.

But when she’s done crying, tomorrow will be the brightest day she’s had in a while. Her breakfast bowl of cereal is going to taste like a spoon of caviar, she’s going to avoid the row of roses that she usually crushes everday as she walks to school, but then soon enough she’ll find another distraction. And someday someone is going to come and sweep her off her feet, and treat her like the woman she is, putting an end to ALL her little fucking distractions. But it isn’t me.

Friend: (Gasp). Whoa. You need to get stoned. But… You know what?

I: What?

Friend: You’ll find what you’re looking for too. Soon enough. It’s going to come, and you’ll be happy. You doubt it but you’ll remember what I’m saying soon enough.

On a totally polarizing note:

I came across this Youtube Channel called Internet Killed Television or CTFxC which stands for Charles Trippy Friend Core. I know, facepalm yourself here and continue. Awesome channel that follows a couple that is travelling around the world. The dude is Charles and the chick is Alli I think… Anyways, I usually don’t youtube shit except for if its failblog, but there’s something about them that’s so undeniably real. It’s not like that sitcom love type of thing or even that breed of love that we all got a dose of in Titanic. It’s just real. It’s just Charles Trippy and his girlfriend and their dogs goofing off and doing the things that they love without a care in the world.

It’s the ignorant ‘you’re the only one in the world, babe’ love that we all die to have. It’s like they own one another. I cringed at their cover of 1234 of the Plain White T’s because they were so in love. It’s kind of that sickly sweet taste you get when you’ve swallowed a spoonful of sugar (I know I’m not the only one that does that.)

Bottom Line: They’re great, they’re awesome, go watch them, they’ll make your crappy day feel better.

Hey there Delilah what’s it like in New York City I’m a thousand miles away But girl ton

Hey there Delilah what’s it like in New York City
I’m a thousand miles away
But girl tonight you look so pretty, yes you do
Times Square can’t shine as bright as you, I swear it’s true

Hey there Delilah don’t you worry about the distance
I’m right there if you get lonely give this song another listen
Close your eyes, listen to my voice it’s my disguise
I’m by your side

Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
What you do to me

Hey there Delilah, I know times are getting hard
But just believe me girl, someday I’ll pay the bills with this guitar
We’ll have it good, we’ll have the life we knew we would
My word is good

Hey there Delilah, I’ve got so much left to say
If every simple song I wrote to you
Would take your breath away, I’d write it all
Even more in love with me you’d fall, we’d have it all

Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me

A thousand miles seems pretty far
But they’ve got planes and trains and cars
I’d walk to you if I had no other way
Our friends would all make fun of us
And we’ll just laugh along because we know
That none of them have felt this way

Delilah I can promise you
That by the time that we get through
The world will never ever be the same
And you’re to blame

Hey there Delilah
You be good and don’t you miss me
Two more years and you’ll be done with school
And I’ll be making history like I do

You’ll know it’s all because of you
We can do whatever we want to
Hey there Delilah here’s to you
This one’s for you

Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
Oh it’s what you do to me
What you do to me

via: dirtylittlestylewhore.
